Gearing Up For A New Home As ADE’s growth escalated, it was only inevitable that we would have to add some new permanent abodes to the programme. It is with great pleasure to announce that we have housed various aspects from Gear and MusicTalks at the De Brakke Grond and Compagnietheater; two venues expertly suited to Playground’s needs. These central and established venues will play host to a plethora of high-calibre music-tech firms and MusicTalks. I’m especially looking forward to hearing Hans Zimmer talk about his career in Hollywood, as well as experiencing the new 4DSound system. Playground 2014 will also be home to a new and improved Art Route, a contemporary selection of music films, a series of excellent pop-up stores and exhibitions throughout Amsterdam and more concerts and showcases than you can imagine. The ADE Card For Free Entry and More

To make life easier and help make your stay at the Amsterdam Dance Event as eventful as possible, the ADE Card gives you exclusive and/or free entry to a number of ADE Playground events, plus a multitude of extras like free welcome drinks, giveaways and discounts. For just €10, you’ll have free entry to nearly all ADE Playground activities and exclusive entry to the ADE MusicTalks. A fair share of the ADE Playground activities are freeentry, some however are not and selected events are open exclusively to ADE Card holders. The ADE Card, of which availability is limited, can be purchased from the ADE Playground website and at the ADE x Samsung Home at the Rembrandtplain for €10. The ADE MusicTalks at De Brakke Grond are open exclusively to holders of the ADE Card. The programme at De Brakke Grond offers Q&As with, among others Boy George, Junkie XL and film composer Hans Zimmer. Playground Gear brings together tech-related events at the Compagnietheater and De Brakke Grond. At Compagnietheater, Ableton offer daily Ableton Push and Live

9 workshops. Moreover, the 4DSOUND installation is demonstrated via masterclasses and workshops – free for ADE Card holders. Meanwhile At De Brakke Grond, Focusrite Novation and Native Instruments host workshops and panels where DJs and producers will test the latest gear; all of which are open to ADE cardholders. ADE Card also gives free-entry to the complete ADE film programme at De Balie and Melkweg cinemas, which are showing documentaries on Modeselektor, the modular synthesizer, and the history of UK Garage. At Mixtup, The Open Draw presents sketches and artworks by established drawing artists and illustrators that are documenting the Amsterdam Dance Event. On top of that, the ADE Card treats you to assorted perks like free welcome drinks, giveaways and discounts. ADE Playground Extends the ADE Vibe

ADE Playground is a daytime event that extends the spirit of the club nights into daytime hours, spreading the ADE vibe all over the city of Amsterdam. In addition to ADE’s 2000+ performances, ADE Playground offers a (largely) free-access daytime programme of dance-related exhibitions, music-related movies and documentaries, DJ showcases, gear master classes and public Q&As at various notable locations in the city’s downtown area and beyond. Open to conference participants as well, ADE Playground aims to spread the congenial and informal atmosphere of the ADE Conference to the city streets, bridging the mental and spatial gap between the dance professionals at ADE’s daytime hubs, Felix Meritis, the Dylan Hotel and the various sub-conference centres, and the audience that makes ADE’s club nights such a success. ADE Playground breaks down into five themes: Art, Movies, Gear. MusicTalks and Pop-Up. A fair share of the ADE Playground activities are freeentry, however, some are only open to ADE Card holders. ART

Art is one of the pillars of ADE Playground. Following up the 2013 events, held at multiple galleries around Amsterdam, a series of entry-free exhibitions will highlight various aspects of music and club culture. The Uncovered expo illustrates the indissoluble link between music and album cover art, displaying original artwork by a host of artists that graced the cover of notable dance releases. (Mini Galerie, 12 am–6 pm, October 15-October 19). Official opening: October 16, 6 pm-9 pm. The Open Draw is an international network of emerging and established artists and illustrators who work with various aspects of art. Sketch artists will be sent out to document Amsterdam Dance Event Playground, conference and festival; each artist according to their own style. During ADE, The Open Draw will present these sketches and artworks in an exhibition that concludes with the finale on Sunday. (Mixtup, 2 pm-11pm, Saturday 12 pm; Sunday 6 pm, October 16-19). FILM

Under the Films @ ADE banner, Melkweg Cinema will present a selection of music-related movies and documentaries. I Dream Of Wires is an independent documentary about the history, demise and resurgence of the modular synthesizer, featuring interviews with over 100 modular musicians, inventors and enthusiasts. (Wednesday, 7:30 pm-9:30pm, October 15). Rewind 4Ever: The History of UK Garage, the debut documentary by producer-director (and music fan) Alex Lawton, retells the rise, fall and recent resurgence of the British phenomenon that is UK Garage. It is the first ever in-depth account of the genre and features interviews with UK garage’s major players, among others Karl ‘Tuff Enuf’ Brown, Matt ‘Jam’ Lamont, The Dreem Team, Artful Dodger and Wookie (Friday, 7 pm-8:30pm, October 17). We Are Modeselektor documents the rise of the oddball duo from Berlin; from Sebastian Szary’s and Gernot Bronsert’s roots in former East Germany to their current success. Edited from archive material, behind the scenes tour footage and scenes shot specifically for this documentary, directors Romi Agel and Holger Wick paint an intimate portrait of the two unlikely stars who stayed true to where they came from (Thursday, 7:30 pm- 11 pm, October 16 + Friday, 3:30 pm-6:45 pm, October 17).

GEAR

This year, gear workshops and demo sessions are set in two central locations; De Brakke Grond and the nearby Compagnietheater, thus functioning as a hub for the tech heads. At De Brakke Grond, gear manufacturers Focusrite Novation and Native Instruments present a series of music panels and technology master-classes, while producers and DJs can road test gear (De Brakke Grond, 12 am-7 pm, October 16–18). At the Compagnietheater, just a short walk from De Brakke Grond, Ableton will present daily Ableton Push and Live 9 workshops, artist talks and performances, master classes and more. 4DSound, with partner Ableton, will demonstrate its state of the art soundsystem that produces moving sound images in an unlimited spatial continuum. It enables the listener to not only hear sound, but to experience it. The ADE Sound Academy will present master classes and live shows on the 4DSoundSystem: Paul Oomen (Wednesday, 2 pm-5 pm), Max Cooper (Thursday, 2 pm-4 pm), Robert Lippok & Peter Kim (Friday, 2 pm-5 pm) and Vladislav Delay (Saturday, 2 pm-5 pm). On Sunday, the Spatial Sound Hack Lab will offer a series of short public performances pieces created in 4DSound during the ADE Sound Academy. The presen-

tation will be rounded with a panel discussing diverse aspects of spatial sound production and immersive sonic environments. Confirmed panel members include Peter Kirn (CDM), Jarl Schulp (FIBER), Gareth Williams (Liine), Paul Oomen (4DSound) and Marting Stimmung, who will present the self-designed hardware controllers that drive his 4DSOUND live performance (Sunday, 2 pm-9 pm). MUSICTALKS

This year, ADE Playground will present a series of MusicTalks at De Brakke Grond and nearby Sonos Studio ADE. One of the main highlights is George Alan O’Dowd, aka. Boy George, who rose to global fame in the 80s as singer of Culture Club. When the band folded, he reinvented himself as a DJ, founding the More Protein label. (De Brakke Grond, 4 pm-5 pm, October16). The remarkable career of Junkie XL (Tom Holkenburg) – from industrial music to Grammy-nominated producer of Hollywood film scores – will be clarified by the man himself (Brakke Grond, 2:30 pm-3:30 pm, October 17). We will also hear more Hollywood stories from the Oscar- and Golden Globe award winner Hans Zimmer; composer of over 100 film scores, including The Lion King, Gladiator and 12 Years a Slave (De Brakke Grond, 4 pm-5 pm, October 17). POP-UP

The Kompakt Pop-Up Store is back for ADE 2014. For the duration of ADE, the fabled label from Cologne opens shop at the Oz gallery in the Red Light district. Open daily from 2pm to 8pm, the Kompakt Pop-Up Store will carry exclusive items, rounding out the day with DJ showcases by Kompakt mainstays and label friends: Weval & Patrice BĂ¤umel (Wednesday), Tobias Thomas & KĂ&#x2013;LSCH (Thursday), Stocksaur DJ Team (Friday) and Kompakt head honcho Michel Mayer (Saturday), daily from 6pm to 8pm. Imagine IC, a cultural venue in Amsterdam-Zuidoost, will a host a bubbling master class with DJ Charro, covering both spinning records and body moving (Wednesday, October 15, 3 pm-5 pm: RSVP via Facebook). At the Tipping Points in Music: From Underground to Arena seminar, various experts, including DJ Moortje (godfather of bubbling and, by extension, the Dirty Dutch style) and Anthony Donner (former editor in chief of DJMag), discuss the interaction of underground and mainstream music (Friday, October 17, 7:30 pm-9 pm: RSVP via Facebook).

This year ADE has teamed up with SINNER, Urbanears and ACS for a new series of hot, new merchandise. Each and every conference attendee can purchase these new ADE products at the Amsterdam Dance Event webpage or at the on-site Pop-Up stores located at De Brakke Grond and the ADE x Samsung Home at Rembrandt Square. This year’s selection of products includes two special ADE items produced by SINNER. The European fashion label has designed a special themed backpack (€69,99) that has been tailored to be strong, flexible, durable and waterproof (which is very essential in October in the Netherlands). Wearing your sunglasses at night will also be an option with the one-off SINNER x ADE, black-and-yellow sunglasses (€ 59,99). This year, make a sharp appearance in special ADE tailored apparel. This year, the ADE Playground program at Melkweg Galerie will be shaped as an interactive media and game hangout. Here, you can enjoy games and media art, have a drink, a snack, do some networking and listen to great music of course! Highlight is the premiere of Kypski’s ‘Wreck Fader’. This new album comes not with a new video clip, but with a 3D music game which is based on ‘turntablism’, in which the turntables are used as a musical instrument. Join the Kick-Off on Wednesday 15th, at 17:00 hrs. During the entire ADE program you can discover more games such as Spotter (interactive dance machine, where you control sound and visuals by physical movement), Pillo Game (play with a partner by ‘cuddling’ the pillow-controller) and the EMG Muscle Game (control the game by tightening your muscles).

Foam, Photography Museum Amsterdam, presents the exhibition Shadows, Patterns, Pears by the American artist Daniel Gordon (b. 1980 Boston, USA). Gordon was chosen as the winner of the Foam Paul Huf Award 2014. This prize is organised by Foam and awarded annually to promising international photographer under the age of 35. ADE Playground at VolksHotel: Anima I (exhibition) Anima 1 ‘iki’ is an interactive art installation by Nick Verstand and Frouke ten Velden. ANIMA 1 ‘iki’ explores the nature of living things. The interactive art installation investigates how humans emotionally relate to a digital being. Using video mapping, the visuals of the installation communicate with visitors by reacting to body movements and sounds. A generative being that comes to life through interaction. Present Plus presents: The Omnipollo

In partnership with Ninja Tune, Bleep and DontWatchThat.TV, Novation return to the Walls Gallery to provide a unique space for ADE visitors. Ninja Tune and Bleep will be showcasing various label-related artworks in the gallery, including a selection of artist portraits by iconic photographer Shaun Bloodworth. At the back of the Gallery, a series of live ‘Beat This’ sessions will take place, where invited guest artists will be challenged to create a beat or piece of electronic music, from scratch, against the clock. Limited edition merchandise and freshly prepared coffee will be available all day, so join us to take your meetings, enjoy the exhibition or to simply have a quick coffee break. Our show at the Kuvva Gallery will be all about the wonders created by Omnipollo, a project that is just as praised for its marvellous beers as it is for its design and illustrations. Once arrived at the gallery you’ll be unsure whether you’ve just entered an exhibition or your favourite dingy concert venue while being able to taste some of the world’s most special beers created especially for the occasion. Grandin’s style is graphic, minimalistic and colourful, but always with a dark edge that seems to create a nightlife inspired atmosphere. Varying from ‘classic prints’ to murals and even a tipi, the art-experience of this exhibition will not be your average gallery visit. Come and see for yourself whether these works will blow your mind or only your liver and let your tastebuds be astonished by the brews of Karl Grandin and Henok Fentie.

Imagine IC presents: Let’s Party (sneak preview exhibition)

The Mini Galerie proudly presents Uncovered: The art of the album cover. For decades visual artists have been creating art for record covers. By the virtue of these artists the album cover evolved from a plain package to an object of desire in its own rights. The cover design has become an important and integral part of the music experience. The exhibition will uncover the original artworks by the artists Boris Tellegen, Maya Hayuk, Jeroen Erosie, Graphic Surgery, Ekta, Merijn Hos and Rop van Mierlo that have been used for the cover design of various dance records.

Imagine IC will launch their new exhibition: “Let’s Party” on the 23rd of october. Prior to the opening of the exhibition, Imagine IC will present a masterclass and seminar during Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE). Read more about our events in ADE’s Playground (Art) program. Tangram Records teams up with “Vriend van Bavink” to present you an insight into the graphic activities of the Belgian label, hence TANGRAMSTERDAM. Street artists and Tangram affiliates SIR-5 and DZIA, the label’s house photographer and live VJ DIA will all present a carefull selection of works. Album covers, t-shirts, logo interpretations, video stills, sketches and exclusive new work by all the artists will be on display. Former grafitti artist SJEM BAKKUS joins this expo displaying several recent pieces. The Open Draw presents: ADE Drawn Live - A growing exhibition of documentary drawings

Get your ADE Playground portrait drawn by artists and illustrators. The Open Draw artists are professional digital and hand drawn illustrators, cartoonists and drawing artists. Your portrait will be drawn by a random artist or one of your choice. No More Selfies - Get The Picture is part of Amsterdam Dance Event Drawn Live. You can visit the exhibition and take part yourself, or just meet with the artists at work. Rules of participation • You can visit The Open Draw to get your photo taken during opening hours; • Or submit your portrait photo digitally • A randomly assigned artist costs 35 EUR (per head or person drawn) • Or select your favourite artist for 100 EUR (per head or person drawn) • You receive your portrait digitally within one week from submission • It is up to the artist to come up with an interpretation. Is drawing in any way related to dance culture? Can these disciplines find a symbiotic relationship while retaining their independent qualities? Drawing is an art form associated with solitude and isolation, without the instant gratification and unity provided by dance parties. But it’s surely possible to showcase the power of drawing by making an artistic impression of Amsterdam Dance Event. The Open Draw is an international network of emerging and established drawing artists and illustrators who work with various aspects of drawing. In particular they seek each other out for creative innovation and experimentation in visual literacy. Sketch artists will be sent out to document Amsterdam Dance Event culture, conference and party, each artist according to their own style. During ADE The Open Draw will present these sketches and artworks in a growing exhibition that is final only on the Sunday. It is the first of a kind artistically authentic visual document of the biggest dance event in the world. DJ technology industry leader Pioneer has been making regular appearances at the Amsterdam Dance Event for the past couple of years. Films @ ADE: Origins - Matthew Dear (RA short film) If there’s one thing that sets Matthew Dear apart as an electronic artist, it’s his gift for singing and songwriting—not the most common skill-set for someone who came up in Detroit’s techno scene. Starting in the late ‘90s, Dear made a name for himself with blistering club tracks on Ghostly International (the label he started with Sam Valenti IV), but it was his voice, lyrics and swagger as a frontman that would later make him such a unique icon. The source of this talent goes back even further than Detroit to Dear’s childhood home in Kingsville, Texas, where his father, also a professional musician, taught him to sing and play guitar. In this episode of ORIGINS, Dear heads to Kingsville for the first time in over a decade to revisit spots from his childhood and “pick some guitar” with his dad. “I wanna see some places I used to go,” he says. “What is nostalgia, what is real, what are my memories worth?” This Resident Advisor’s short film will be shown before the main film ’I Dream of Wires’. Films @ ADE x Studio/K present: It’s All Gone Pete Tong The phrase “it’s all gone Pete Tong” is Cockney rhyming slang that plays off the name of superstar DJ Pete Tong. It means “it’s all gone wrong”. “It’s All Gone Pete Tong” is a biopic based on the life of legendary DJ Frankie Wilde. Frankie was one of Europe’s most talented and envied DJs and a main attraction for hedonistic youth each holiday season in Ibiza, Spain. Everything about Frankie’s life was over the top: the clubs, the parties, the women and the drugs. But the years of pounding music and heavy toxins took their toll, eventually leaving Frankie stone deaf. His fans, record deal, manager, wife and stepson soon disappeared. 100% Silk is an independent record label and tastemaker in the expanding and evolving world of electronic dance music. In june of 2012 four core acts from the label - LA Vampires, Ital, Magic Touch, and Maria Minerva - ambarked on a lengthy group tour through Europe, The UK and Russia. SILK is a chronicle of the performances, cultural environments, and global scenes through which the troupe traveled: a congested Parisian club, a motorcycle showroom in Bristol, an abandoned industrial lot in Moscow, afterhours Berlin compound, a re-purposed World War II fun tower in Hamburg, as well as massive international festivals such as Distortion in Copenhagen and Sonar in Barcelona. Tonally and structurally, SILK’s approach is expressionistic than journalistic. Its architecture, rhythm and pacing are more akin to a classic full-length house album, with builds and breakdowns and recurring motifs, than a traditional linear storytelling narrative. SILK as a film seeks to reflect both the ambiguous daily realities of the label as well as the fantastical visions underpinning its inspirations. To this end, SILK features seven staged dance sequences conceived, choreographed, and performed by Mexxa Vazie Andrews and the Los Angeles Contemporary Dance Company. Each dance is designed to visually articulate the personal philosophies and emotional aesthetics of the artists, while also exploring the pop-cultural iconography of the music itself. SILK is a music documentary, a live concert experience, an essayistic travelogue and, above all, a dance film.

Sonos Studio ADE14: Henrik Schwarz (DE) & Bugge Wesseltoft (NO) Sonos Studio returns to the Amsterdam Dance Event to explore the intersection of music, art and technology at the world’s largest celebration of dance music culture Henrik Schwarz German DJ and producer Henrik Schwarz is widely regarded as one of the most informed DJs within the contemporary scene, blending together classic jazz and soul with his solid grounding in house music. Today, you’re more likely to find Schwarz bringing his club sounds to concert halls through his latest project ‘Instruments’ or creating contemporary jazz with Bugge Wesseltoft. But aside from all these projects, rumours suggest there is a new solo album on the horizon. Bugge Wesseltoft Norwegian jazz pianist Bugge Wesseltoft is considered to be one of the most innovative players of today’s modern generation. Outside of the jazz world however, many will recognize him from his work with German house producer, Henrik Schwarz. Alongside bass player, Dan Berglund, the three musicians have teamed up to form an experimental, improvisational outfit that brings together their individual experiences in a live, melee that extenuates their understanding of jazz music. In the middle of a large German forest called Dahlener Heide lies a small village called Olganitz. To get there you have to follow curving country roads through quiet fairy-tale pine forests, cornfields and deserted villages. There, in a bungalow holiday village from DDR times, every summer 3.000 people gather with one common interest: the love for electronic music and the love for a party called Nachtdigital. This festival is different from all other festivals. No commercialized techno party, but an excessive musical get together among friends. A weekend at the lake, with rowing boats and rocking horses, a play area with many small curiosities and excellent music. Escape to Olganitz investigates how, out of friendship and a shared passion, one of the most respected electronic music festivals in Europe could grow in the middle of the East German backwoods. A film that will show how people with values, like tradition and home, created a place where a different version of a festival becomes reality — beyond club culture and the fast pace of a constantly reinventing scene. An utopia where for three days a year terms like rural & urban, conservative & avant-garde are not contradictory. A place Beyond the Hype. His style encompasses everything from Stevie Wonder to Fella Kuti to the hottest dance mixes. All this makes him the ideal host for the evening. Spinna helped us hand pick the film we’re screening, “Charles Bradley: Soul Of America”. This heart warming documentary takes audiences into the world of a 62 year old man living in poverty, who finds his voice with the help of talented musicians/producers. Their collaboration leads to him making the best selling soul album of 2011 and ending up at North Sea Jazz Festival 2014 in Rotterdam. The afterparty will feature a 3hr solo set by DJ Spinna himself.

Films @ ADE: RA Sessions - Kink KiNK’s performances are a middle finger to live dance music’s naysayers. The Bulgarian house artist shows the broad possibilities of the form by playing his assorted setup with the skill of a seasoned musician. Strahil Velchev’s style blends DJ tricks with keyboard and controller manipulation. He also likes to involve the crowd, encouraging dancers in the front row to smash out patterns on his Novation Launchpad. It’s one of the reasons he’s been a permanent fixture in our best live acts poll in recent years. Velchev has a deep well of killer club tracks—”Bitter Sweet,” “Detunator,” “E79,” “Express” etc—but when he stopped by RA’s London HQ he combined “Source Of Uncertainty,” a new track from his forthcoming debut album, with a stretch of improvisation. During ADE, Seeing Sounds will look into the relation between musicians and machines. In what way musicians are influenced by technological developments and the available audio equipment? And how do they use the machines to their own purpose - by crossing the technical boundaries, hacking instruments or by using them in a different way then the manufacturer intented. Yuri Landman, musician and composer of music instruments, shows how he designs his own electrical string instruments. He will also go into sound analysis and his research on how to create new sounds. In his talk, the pioneers of electronic music from the ‘50’s and ‘60’s will be discussed and the current culture of circuit bending that is actively seeking new musical forms. During the screenings of Seeing Sounds, producers who have put their stamp on the development of electronical dance music will be given the floor. They’ve managed to adopt the technical equipment and change them. From Brian Eno, one of the founders of ambient, to the young producer SFV Acid who was inspired by the typical sound of Roland TB-303 in 2014. This event will take place in Doka, the cocktailbar in the basement.

Sonos Studio returns to the Amsterdam Dance Event to explore the intersection of music, art and technology at the world’s largest celebration of dance music culture. Music discovery service 22tracks.com, curated by local top DJs from Amsterdam, Brussels, London and Paris, is the perfect guide in a crowded musical landscape. 22tracks is all about curating. KiNK’s performances are a middle finger to live dance music’s naysayers. The Bulgarian house artist shows the broad possibilities of the form by playing his assorted setup with the skill of a seasoned musician. Strahil Velchev’s style blends DJ tricks with keyboard and controller manipulation. He also likes to involve the crowd, encouraging dancers in the front row to smash out patterns on his Novation Launchpad. It’s one of the reasons he’s been a permanent fixture in our best live acts poll in recent years. Imagine IC presents: Tipping Points in Music: From Underground to ArenA

One Fire Ignites Another tells the story of RoXY. Part nightclub, part theatre, part cultural revolution. RoXY rose to worldwide fame in the nineties for its spectacular decors, notoriously shocking performances, elitest door policy and famous punters, but it was its championing of acid house music that would forever put RoXY on the world map. The documentary features never before seen archive footage showcasing Fingers Inc, Boy George, Right Said Fred, Dimitri and New York’s electro clash founder, Larry Tee. Its expansive creative policy also launched the careers of some of the world’s most prominent erotic performers and artists including Leigh Bowery, Zubrowka and photographer Erwin Olaf. The documentary will be introduced by artist Dadara. Well known from projects like Art As Money and Like4Real, Dadara translates social issues into interactive installations with a performance character. In that way, his performances were showcased at Burning Man and Oerol, and he also colaborated with brands like Absolut. Preliminary to the viewing he will make a connection between the history of creative night culture, the rise of RoXY and the current thriving festival culture.

Imagine IC will launch their new exhibition “Let’s Party” on 23 october. As promotion Imagine IC programs two events during the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE). You can find us in ADE’s Playground (Art) program with a masterclass and seminar. The second event by Imagine IC during Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) will be “Tipping points in music: from underground to ArenA”, a seminar where DJ Moortje, Vato Gonzalez, Ellroy Uyleman (Jarreau Vandal), Peter Suttorp (bubbling expert) and Anthony Donner (dance expert and former editor in chief DJ Mag) will talk with the audience about the relation between underground and mainstream music. “I’m more than just and only bubbling”, as Hardwell noted. Big dj’s get their inspiration from underground musicstyles, like DJ Chuckie who fused “dance” with “bubbling” in his ‘Party Crasher’ track at the time. Films @ ADE: SILK 100% Silk is an independent record label and tastemaker in the expanding and evolving world of electronic dance music. In june of 2012 four core acts from the label - LA Vampires, Ital, Magic Touch, and Maria Minerva - ambarked on a lengthy group tour through Europe, The UK and Russia. SILK is a chronicle of the performances, cultural environments, and global scenes through which the troupe traveled: a congested Parisian club, a motorcycle showroom in Bristol, an abandoned industrial lot in Moscow, afterhours Berlin compound, a re-purposed World War II fun tower in Hamburg, as well as massive international festivals such as Distortion in Copenhagen and Sonar in Barcelona. Tonally and structurally, SILK’s approach is expressionistic than journalistic. Its architecture, rhythm and pacing are more akin to a classic full-length house album, with builds and breakdowns and recurring motifs, than a traditional linear storytelling narrative. SILK as a film seeks to reflect both the ambiguous daily realities of the label as well as the fantastical visions underpinning its inspirations. To this end, SILK features seven staged dance sequences conceived, choreographed, and performed by Mexxa Vazie Andrews and the Los Angeles Contemporary Dance Company. Each dance is designed to visually articulate the personal philosophies and emotional aesthetics of the artists, while also exploring the pop-cultural iconography of the music itself. Films @ ADE: Gabbers! ‘Gabber’ is the only subculture that originated in the Netherlands and reached countries far abroad. From America to Japan the term ‘gabba’ was well known. Who were those guys and girls that founded this subculture? ‘Gabber’ is trending. At the moment, the Dutch subculture is being revived by the Parisians and New York avant-garde. The documentary shows the rise and fall of the original gabber culture of the nineties, but also what gabber now still means. In Gabbers! director Wim van der Aar investigates this movement and it’s inescapable lifestyle that went far beyond music alone. With never shown before archive footage, supplemented with material from the broadcasting archives and amateur archive of the gabbers themselves, the documentary gives a unique picture of the Dutch gabber culture. In Gabbers! It’s 1993 again, the time when Parkzicht and Energiehal were the main spots for the hard dance music. With Wim van der Aar’s fascination (The Van Waveren Tapes) for subcultures and found footage, the documentary will give an unusual insight into a subculture that even now still leaves its imprint. Sonos Studio ADE14: Anthony Parasole & Function (US) Sonos Studio returns to the Amsterdam Dance Event to explore the intersection of music, art and technology at the world’s largest celebration of dance music culture. Anthony Parasole Anthony Parasole should need no introduction to newer or longer-standing denizens of the New York deep house and techno scenes. A long time employee of halcyon, friend of Levon Vincent and partner in Deconstruct Music, and a prominent figure with the underground house and techno resurgence of NYC, Anthony’s acute selections won our ears right away, and he hasn’t let go since. Function One of techno’s true underground heroes, Function, real name Dave Sumner, has been DJing and making music for over 15 years. Hailing from New York, he was seduced by techno music when Jeff Mills held a residency (as well as his own first) at the Limelight in the early 90s. Dave started to produce music and from the mid-90s onwards, put out music on Damon Wild’s Synewave and his own Infrastructure imprint. Together with Karl O’Connor aka Regis he worked as Portion Reform, putting out uncompromising music on Downwards and becoming the only non-Birmingham producer to release on the label. More recently, Dave moved to Berlin and, still working with O’Connor, set up the acclaimed Sandwell District imprint. Tickets: Free entrance

He has been one of the first djs who fully embraced the digital age of music. Since then he has never stopped working on his dj and production setup’s and has finally reached a point of complete satisfaction with his technical and artistic possibilities.

Kölsch Well known for his productions, Rune Reilly Kölsch has sold millions of records all over the world under his many different monikers and production work includes some of the biggest artists in the world. But something has always been missing. Being a true techno head, paying homage to his underground roots is very important to him. So he started the slightly mysterious Tattoorecs with his brother Johannes Torpe, and together they are enjoying great success with their blend of romantic techno with strong influences from the heydays of Detroit and Chicago. Let’s get this out of the way: Samir Alikhanizadeh is 16 years old. He wrote his breakthrough track, “Boss,” when he was 14, and he travels to gigs accompanied by an adult. Much of the discussion about Happa has (understandably) centred on his age. But strip away the child star hype and you’re left with a gifted producer who has an innate understanding of moving dance floors. Happa’s music is coloured by powerful industrial techno textures, but his rhythms and arrangements are influenced by UK bass music. “I do like a lot of aggression in dance music,” he says. When Loefah played “Boss” on Rinse FM in 2012 it started a chain of events that kick-started Samir’s career. Mary Anne Hobbs was an immediate supporter, and she introduced Samir to Four Tet, who commissioned him to remix a track, “Jupiters,” for his label. Samir went on to release tracks and remixes through an impressive list of labels—Church, Bleep, Domino, R&S, Boomkat Editions—and last week he announced PT/5 Records, a label he’s starting alongside Al Gill whose first release has remixes from Truss and Shifted. As we discovered on the road with Samir in Leeds, Milan and London, the backdrop to all of this has been pretty normal. Samir lives with his family and attends a music college in Leeds (his teacher didn’t know much about Samir’s modest fame). We also heard about Samir’s struggle with Crohn’s disease, a debilitating illness that looms over his life but afforded him the time at home to develop his brutal signature sound. With the ADE Sound Academy, 4DSOUND will focus on the presentation and development of inspiring new settings in music, technology and art. We host an extensive 5-day schedule of varied masterclasses, handson workshops and live performances on the 4DSOUND system, involving a variety of internationally respected artists, creators and thinkers. Sunday, October 19th will be dedicated to the presentation of the Spatial Sound Hack Lab with a series of short public performances. The participants are provided an opportunity to perform their work - created throughout the week - in the ADE Sound Academy. The presentation will be hosting a final panel evaluating the ADE Sound Academy, and discussing diverse aspects of spatial sound production and immersive sonic environments. The panel will feature the following speakers, with further names to be announced: Peter Kirn (CDM), Jarl Schulp (FIBER), Gareth Williams (Liine), Paul Oomen (4DSOUND) and Martin Stimming - who will present the self-designed hardware controllers that drive his 4DSOUND live performance.
