Coming home! These are the moments I live for: coming back to my beloved city of Amsterdam, the city that I still consider my home. Back for what is already the seventeenth edition of the Amsterdam Dance Event. Amsterdam is packed with amazing architecture, beautiful canals, tasty restaurants, fine hotels, cozy bars and great shopping areas, but most importantly, its amazing, colourful people with all their different backgrounds. What unites the citizens of Amsterdam? Politics? No. Football? Maybe. Music? Sure. Electronic Music? YES, DEFINITELY. Every resident of this great city has caught the electronic music bug. In no other city did I feel the rise of electronic music more as I did in Amsterdam. At no other parties in the world did I feel the natural integration of all these colourful people more than I did in Amsterdam. You get people of all walks of life together in one room, partying. Just because of this, Amsterdam is the place to hold an electronic music conference. Add to that the casual encounters that happen to anyone here on a daily basis, and will happen to you many times during a conference that’s held in a city center the size of a village. Add 700 years of trading tradition. Add the sense of freedom that is deeply rooted in the history of this city. And add, of course, the meticulous organization behind this conference that has always fought for all genres of electronic music. Then you’ll know why ADE is the electronic conference to be for artists, industry folk and fans alike. Wherever I have been, for however long, when that plane lands at Schiphol airport, I can’t help the big grin on my face. Because I know I am home. I really hope it will feel like that for you as well. Welcome to the Amsterdam Dance Event. Welcome home! Love, Tom Holkenborg Producer, composer and one-man band, also known as Junkie XL.

employee of the month

His passion for music at times takes him so deep underground that it seems he will stay below surface forever, but he usually pops up safely with amazing stories about unsung heroes and hidden scenes before we start worrying whether or not he will return. If you’re looking for Eelco during the weekend, just cast an eye on the Amsterdam weekly listings and aim for the event that has the most amazing house, disco, and techno DJs, either new kids on the block or living legends, preferably playing vinyl. ‘I’d rather go to a party where you drink beer from a bottle and hang out with crusties, than join the local hipsters at some boring high-brow event,’ is his philosophy. Every now and then, Eelco shares his purist views on music from behind the decks. If you happen to see his name on a flyer, it wouldn’t hurt to go to one of his gigs and have a beer with the man himself. From a bottle, preferably.

AKAI SYNTHSTATION 49

The box looks like it could hold a fridge, but it contains Akai’s massive SynthStation 49. The price, however, is not massive. The SynthStation 49 contains a keyboard with pitch and modulation wheels, nine sensitive MPC-like pads and several physical control buttons. Many options arise with connecting to an iPad, and Akai’s specially designed software. There are tons of filters, several work-screens, a grid, and sampling and recording options. Of course it has USB/MIDI outputs so you’re able to hook it up with your computer, but it also has a stereo output to connect to a mixer. akaipro.com/synthstation49

KORG NANOSERIES2

When you’re a producer on the road, there is so much time to work on new music projects if only you had a decent MIDI set-up somewhere. With the Korg nanoSeries2, you can have have that studio experience at any place. The set-up includes a pad, keyboard and a control unit, all separate devices. The controller is designed in such a way that it’s very light and small, but still giving you the comfort of the physical touch to get the ideas floating. It’s connectable to both notebook and iPad. There’s free Korg software to start with, but it works with most software packages, including Ableton Live. korg.com/nanoseries2 Go to DJBroadcast.nl to be in with a chance of winning these items.

From 17 to 21 October – that’s Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday – Amsterdam turns black and yellow for the biggest and best Amsterdam Dance Event so far. With ever more locations all across the city hosting parties each night, ADE is expanding its daytime program as well. Not just for dance music professionals, but for everybody. With the addition of ADE Playground, ADE is entering a whole new, exciting phase. Where there used to be just the one closing party on Sunday night, the last day of the weekend has become fully integrated into the program. Do you have the stamina for five days and five nights of discovery and celebration, of learning and connecting? ADE covers the whole electronic spectrum from deep-house tot hardstyle, from electro to avantgarde and from disco to Dutch house. Overall, 23 new locations have been added to a total of 75. You should definitely think of getting a bicycle this year. To reach the huge new Ziggo Dome, where Chuckie is hosting an edition of Dirty Dutch and where Headhunterz will cement his entry into the big leagues, a taxi might be more suitable though. ADE is branching into every part of Amsterdam, including the outer reaches of town. The beautiful city centre, of course, remains the area where most of the action takes place. With the introduction of ADE Playground, the festival has found a new centre of activity in Stanislavski, formerly the foyer of the eye-catching,

nineteenth-century Stadsschouwburg on the Leidseplein. This is the new beating heart of ADE, where you can find all the latest updates concerning ADE Playground, buy festival tickets, find the merchandise, arrange a rendezvous, and most of all, experience cool events from small gigs to lectures and even official ADE warm-up sessions. It’s the Festival Lounge ADE has always dreamed of having. ADE Playground bundles a great many daytime activities spread across 18 locations including film screenings, art exhibitions, workshops, in-store performances, secret gigs et cetera. Get the new ADE Card and gain free or reducedprice access to Playground events and lots of other performances and parties from the dozens of events taking place each night. Yes, it’s hard. Yes, it’s worth it. ADE is like no other dance festival in the world. Oh, and did I mention there is also a conference? Dance music professionals (you recognize them by their laminates) congregate around ADE Pro, ADE Next, ADE University, Hard Dance Event, Beamlab and Music & Bits – six different conferences taking place at once that meet everyone’s needs and make Amsterdam Dance Event also the B2B platform for the global dance industry, from record label bigwigs to aspiring musicians, from video artists to web developers. Whether you’re a professional or not, we are all music lovers, and everyone is welcome at ADE. Let’s party! amsterdam-dance-event.nl

THE YEAR OF ISIS It’s been a busy year for Isis van der Wel, celebrating her twentieth anniversary as a DJ, ending her mandate as Amsterdam’s Night Mayor and helping organise a succesful second edition of the free-spirited Magneet Festival. On top of that, she’s playing this year’s ADE twice. On Friday 19th October, Isis performs at Koekoek 3D in Odeon, along with Tiefschwarz and others. On Saturday you can find her at Who Run the World! in Club Nyx (formerly Club Exit), headlining an all female line-up including Amsterdam’s SpaceGirls collective. Isis began her career at the age of 17 in clubs like the famous RoXY, and has become one Holland’s most successful DJs. This April, she kicked off her two-decade anniversary with a six-hour set at Paradiso, taking in an extensive history of modern dance music. During ADE, Isis will begin on a collaborative Doe Maar remix project at the Red Bull Studios, working with other Dutch dance artists on reworking songs from one the Netherlands’ most popular bands ever. djisis.nl

SAE INSTITUtE AUDIOBOT WITH MA SPAVENTI The SAE Institute in Amsterdam is one of the highest acclaimed educational centers for sound-production and design. Situated in Amsterdam-North, has turned talented sound-heads into high standard professionals. For six years now, DJBroadcast and SAE have teamed up for what is called the Audiobot Competition. Anyone can send in their track to the DJB editorial staff, who will select five finalist who are then voted on by the readers. The winner gets a day’s studio time with an acclaimed producer, work together on their track. This edition it’s MarcoAntonio ‘Ma’ Spaventi who will guide the young hopeful through the process. The Italian-born, Amsterdam-based producer has delivered some spectacular, delicate dubbed-out house productions, music that he produced both solo and as a collaborator in R-A-G and Crystal Maze. He has released on labels like Secretsundaze, M>O>S> and aDepth Audio. Not only is Spaventi a gifted producer, as a teacher at SAE he’s probably one of the few people that can make the session both inspirational and instructive. djbroadcast.nl

NEW VENUES, NEW LOCATIONS ADE welcomes a variety of new venues located all across the city. This year, some 70 venues subscribe to the ADE Festival program. The Ziggo Dome has seen a steady stream of international stars since the 15,000 capacity venue opened its doors this summer. This ADE, Q-dance will stage a hardstyle event and Chuckie brings his Dirty Dutch extravaganza. Right at the opposite end of the spectrum stands the Concertgebouw, overlooking Amsterdam’s grassy Museumplein. The 124-year-old building joins ADE for a series of special performances. Het Sieraad is the cultural heart of Amsterdam’s Baarsjes area, west of Vondelpark. From there, it’s a 15-minute bike ride back to Leidseplein and the adjacent Stanislavski, the ground-floor restaurant of the beautiful Stadsschouwburg theatre. Both Amsterdam Studio’s and the Convention Factory, also new ADE venues, are located firmly outside the canal area. The latter, located in the Oostelijk Havengebied, is host to the DJ Magazine’s Top 100 Awards Show. If you find Amsterdam’s centuries-old city centre too stuffy, take your bike and ride it here. Westergasterrein is a cultural heartland in Amsterdam-West. Here you find the intimate North Sea Jazz Club as well as the industrial splendour of the Gashouder, the setting for many techno parties. MC Theater is another venue here that’s waiting to get to know you.

ADE FESTIVAL LOUNGE Along with the introduction of ADE Playground, the festival has found a new centre of activity in Stanislavski, formerly the foyer of the eye-catching, nineteenth-century Stadsschouwburg on the Leidseplein. This is the new beating heart of ADE, where you can find all the latest updates concerning ADE Playground, buy festival tickets, find the merchandise, arrange a rendezvous, and most of all, experience cool events from small gigs to lectures and even official ADE warm-up sessions. Vinyl release for MCN Unsigned producers Earlier this year, six emerging Dutch dance producers were picked by MCN Unsigned to remix tracks from national luminaries Tom Trago, Bart B More and Nobody Beats The Drum. The results are called Blender and will be presented at ADE in the shape of an oh so real vinyl package. MCN selected these six producers for this edition: Just Regular Guys, Olivier Boogie, Tettero, Halp, SHMLSS and Baxter Priestly. While dance music was the focus for this edition of the Unsigned project, it will be the 12th and final one in a series where young artists from a range of genres have been offered the opportunity to take the next step in their musical careers. Former MCN Unsigned participants include the mega-selling band Racoon, internationally renowned turntablists-turned-band C-Mon & Kypski, soul/ pop singers Sabrina Starke and Giovanca and the immensely popular rapper Mr. Polska. www.muziekcentrumnederland.nl

Awakenings

Just when you thought it would never happen, it does. Awakenings joins ADE for the first time and they do so in style, with an impressive three-day line-up. Over fifteen years, Amsterdam’s Awakenings parties and festivals have cemented their reputation as some of the world’s most popular techno gatherings, always booking leading acts, showcasing both Dutch talent as well as international names. Awakenings is also known for its spectacular visual experience at the cavernous Gashouder, a venue housed in a 110-yearold gasworks. The Awakenings crew dish up something typically spectacular for ADE. On Wednesday 17 October none other than Carl Cox, Fatboy Slim, Cristian Varela, Nicole Moudaber and Jon Rundell celebrate the 500th episode of Cox’s Global radio show. On Thursday, it’s all about Adam Beyer and his Drumcode label, still one of the defining imprints when it comes to techno music in 2012. Beyer brings with him Ben Sims, Joseph Capriati, Joel Mull, Alan Fitzpatrick and Patrick Seich. Richie Hawtin presents his latest concept Enter. on Saturday 19 October. Dubfire, Loco Dice, Matador (live), Joran van Pol and Joop Junior will also take the stage. Awakenings’ Maarten van Beusekom explains the promoter’s late arrival at ADE. DJB: Why did it take so long for Awakenings to join ADE? ‘The main reason was practical. Venues that can hold 3,000 to 4,000 people are rare in the city center. The Gashouder wasn’t previously available during ADE, due to an annual art fair. With some agenda adjustments, we now have enough

time for pre-production, which takes up a big part of the process. Furthermore, we have opened our ears to the reccurring statements of more and more artists, bookers and promoters, saying they would like to play at ADE. We’ve noticed that the event has become increasingly significant. Taken together, there was enough reason to go for it this year. We see it as an opportunity to show the ADE crowd what we can do with a location like the Gashouder, and with three totally different label nights.’ DJB: With all due respect, but what is Fatboy Slim doing at a techno-fuelled event like Awakenings? ‘Carl Cox invited him personally. Those two have often played back-to-back, and I’m not worried about the musical content when an artist like Cox vouches. I think Fatboy Slim is going to surprise us, take my word that he will play a techno and tech-house orientated set.’ DJB: Besides featuring some the biggest names around, Awakenings has always pushed young DJ talent. However, they need to have a release out. Why? ‘It is our way to motivate artists. If you want to succeed as a DJ, making records is a requirement. Joran van Pol and Joop Junior are good examples. They have been releasing on New Horizons, a sub-label of M_nus, and I personally know for a fact that Richie Hawtin and Dubfire are two of their biggest fans. The four of them are sharing a stage now at Awakenings, so some mutual admiration will be expressed, I’m sure.’ awakenings.nl

ADE in AIR In its first two-and-a-half years, AIR has established itself as one of the leading clubs in the Dutch capital. Situated in the same building as legendary ’90s club iT, it offers a balance between intimate atmosphere and international attitude, thanks to the LED visuals and classy interior developed by designer Marcel Wanders. The people behind AIR are also deeply involved with some of the most successful dance festivals in the country. With Amsterdam Open Air and Buiten Westen they work with trendsetting local promoters like GirlsLoveDJs and Dekmantel, while Milkshake is the first (very) gay-friendly festival in Amster-

VODAFONE FIRESTARTERS AT ADE NEXT Vodafone Firestarters is a platform for innovation and inspiration, focusing on various creative disciplines. During ADE Next, Vodafone’s traveling talk show will cover two topics: Image Innovation and How Not to Festifail. It’s hard to define who you are as a person. But as an artist, you are in control of what you are about and how the world perceives you. Such image-building doesn’t stop with a cool Facebook profile pic, or even with providing up-to-date info about your whereabouts on your various online media. You need to innovate, and get creative with the means at your disposal. Be on top of your demographic and expand it. Make them love you. Image Innovation shows you how. Guests: DJ/producer Sander Kleinenberg and Noisia manager Walter Flapper.

It may look like the festival bubble has popped, resulting in empty dance floors and organisations going bankrupt by the pound. So where does this leave the ambitious promoter? Don’t despair, there’s always room for fresh new things; it’s all about knowing what you’re doing. How can innovation in promo, programming, visual identity, production and positioning add up to an amazing festival? We will deal with this matter at How Not to Festifail. Guests: James Minor (SXSW) and Michel Penders (Plus1). Both talkshows can be viewed after the event on vodafonefirestarters.nl. Vodafone Firestarters is open for all ADE Next visitors. Tickets are available via the ADE website and are € 15 (+ service charge). Felix Meritis, Saturday 20 October. Doors open at 12.30 PM. Image Innovation start at 1 PM, How Not to Festifail starts at 2.15 PM.

SMIRNOFF CUBE HOSTS ADE UNIVERSITY Although the Smirnoff’s gigantic inflatable Cube will draw anyone’s attention on Amsterdam’s tourist-heavy Leidseplein. ADE University, the three-day program taking place inside of it, is not for passers-by. For the second year running, students and young professionals are invited to an event aimed at the next generation of music professional, with lectures from successful, household names in the creative (dance) industry. For instance, you can ask Tom Holkenborg AKA Junkie XL, who composed music for blockbusters like The Dark Knight Rises and Spider-Man, how to work your way to the big leagues. Chuckie can also tell you a thing or two about making it in the US, while Joost van Bellen has stayed at the forefront of club music for over two decades. Furthermore, Duncan Stutterheim (ID&T) and James Minor (SXSW) will go in-depth on (international) entrepreneurship, artist and event management, marketing and how to create a succesful business model. ADE University takes place on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 17-19 October. At night, the Smirnoff Cube turns into a club, with Michel de Hey and Shinedoe (Wednesday), Joris Voorn and 2000 And One (Thursday) and Brothers in the Booth (Friday) playing amongst many others.

Treat Ever since they first met in 1998, Marcel Pantera and Sophie Louise have been an inseperable party duo. Attending and then organising the hottest events, they have been at the center of the scene. Thinking without boundaries has made Treat into the success that it is today. Companies and artists who want to have something special or different added to their party know where to find them. By influencing all senses and directing the atmosphere of the whole venue, a new experience is created, making the event stand out from the rest. By staying in touch with the international party crowd from Ibiza to Amsterdam, Treat makes sure that it remains on top of its game, with Pantera and Louise letting fresh ideas flow and continually improving themselves by thinking different. They enjoy stretching boundaries in show and entertainment, if you are looking for a standard package, feel free to shop elsewhere. treat-amsterdam.nl

Located right in the middle of Amsterdam, Ludwig has quickly become one of the most fashionable bars in town. Situated between the three major squares (Dam, Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein), you’ll find Ludwig on the Reguliersdwarsstraat. For a long time this street had, and to a certain extend still has a reputation as a gay area, but places like Ludwig have given it a more mixed clientele. Once Casper Reinders, the owner of Amsterdam’s famous Jimmy Woo club, fixed the place up this Spring, and both Massive Music and and DJ Mr. Wix (well-known as Mr. Wix) got involved, Ludwig has become a meeting place for Amsterdam’s creative scene. The bar is open daily, while the dancefloor in the back room only reveals itself on weekend nights. Ludwig’s musical palette is quite diverse, promoting what can only be called a metropolitan sound, running from hip-hop to punk, dance and beyond. Malvin Wix, a mainstay of Amsterdam nightlife for well over a decade and a former resident at Jimmy Woo, explains that Ludwig has hosted anything from record release parties, gallery opening afterparties, rapper’s birthday

parties and other gatherings of connected people from the city’s creative corners. ‘The people here are the tastemakers of Amsterdam,’ he says. ‘We offer them a place that feels like home. It’s very much a community thing.’ Enter Ludwig and you see paintings, photographs and graphic art from prominent local artists like Piet Parra, Stefan Glerum and Vincent van de Waal hanging on the walls. ‘The creative scene doesn’t come just for drinks,’ according to Wix. ‘They are really participating. You see it in the works they presented us. We change it up from time to time.’ Where Ludwig used to be more kind of a fashionable lounge, Wix’ main target was to give the place a ‘soul’. ‘We’re at the centre of gay nightlife, but we don’t pretend to be a typical ‘gay-friendly’ hangout’, he says. ‘Anyone who’s interested in the vision and vibe of Ludwig is welcome. I believe that a place must be friendly in general. Gay people must feel free to enter, as well as Moroccan youth. Why should you treat people different to make them feel welcome? They are all patrons with taste, looking for a place that can meet their desires.’ barludwig.com

When you put on an event like the Amsterdam Dance Event, you like to have someone like Dave Clarke on your side. Here’s a man never afraid to speak his mind, an authority not just on all things techno, but a music lover in the broadest sense and an honorary Amsterdammer to boot.

Grace Jones - ‘I’ve Seen That Face Before (Libertango) (DJ Hell Vienna Mix)’ A good record of course, especially with the extra production of DJ Hell, but chosen because ADE is a place that can be confusing as you see people’s faces in perhaps an enviroment that you cannot place them, like a promoter in the sunlight on a terrace in Amsterdam having lunch. Sometimes it can take me a while to put the face to a name because of this. Propaganda - ‘p:Machinery’ A bombastic tune by a German group produced and signed by Trevor Horn, I remember hearing this in a club as a very young chap and being left short for breath when all the orchestrations came in. I’ll be talking to Trevor about this and everything else in his stuffed full career in a panel at ADE. A Place To Bury Strangers - ‘Half Awake’ I don’t just listen to techno and this group really is intense, I saw them in a tiny room at the Paradiso (legendary Amsterdam rock venue) and they filled the space with razor-edged feedback and bass drones that prove that punk and psych can be happy bedfellows. The Revolutionaries - ‘Total Dub’ A great dub album that is sadly in mono (so no great reverb on the skank) but which is great in atmosphere, I found Vital Dub: Well Charged in Waxwell Records (Gasthuismolensteeg 6, part of the 9 Straatjes, .a very small but wellstocked shop. If you have time and you still like vinyl you should get yourself down there. Very close to Dam square. Beak> - ‘Failand’ Whether on not you believe the hyberbole that this second album was recorded in an afternoon doesn’t matter, this is complex, introspective and broody guitar music. I got this from Concerto (Utrechtsestraat 52-60), which is my favourite Sunday afternoon excursion. It is a great street for coffee and food, too. Otis Taylor - ‘Rosa Rosa’ Utterly inspiring. If you find yourself sitting on public transport, cast your mind back to history in the US and imagine sitting down in 1955 when times were not so equal. This song doesn’t preach but just inspires, which is perhaps a clever ruse to suck those who are not too open into the song itself.

I Am Kloot - ‘These Days’ An English group with a Dutch-inspired name, I was a fan quite some years ago and managed to see them at my favourite central Amsterdam venue the Melkweg and they didn’t disappoint. This is a track I got at the beginning of this Summer (?) from the group, it has middle eastern strings with trademark dry vocals at the top of the mix, great cycling music for the banks of the Amstel. Death In Vegas - ‘Medication (Fearless Nightcrawlers Mix)’ Brought to my attention at a Christmas party round a friend’s house, in the background was Job de Wit’s 22tracks and this one had to be repeated all the time. It reminds me (in a lighter way) of Mekon’s ‘Blood on the Moon (In Flagranti Remix)’, but not quite as emotionally challenging. 22tracks. com is a great way to delegate yourself out of doing the music for parties, a lifesaver! Octave One - ‘New Life (Instrumental) (Unsubscribe Remix)’ Unsubscribe is me and Mr. Jones ( an all-times cap wearing techno producer from Haarlem), we did this quite some time ago and in fact I heard the Burden Brothers drop our remix in Rome around March just as I walked in to set up. Two of the nicest, most fervent head nodders in the business and they will be playing at my night at the Melkweg during ADE. Wooden Shjips - ‘Crossing (Andy Weatherall Remix)’ Andrew played at my party last year but sadly I couldn’t make it across to hear his set, one of the downfalls of doing your own parties. This is a trippy mix of Wooden Shjips, a group brought to my attention by acclaimed documentary maker David Kleijwegt (who also has a ‘j’ in a strange place). We were working together on the doc The Owl in Daylight and he recommended I should check them out. Been a fan ever since, and this Weatherall mix proves he still knows what is up. daveclarke.com

Track 8 The stock music player in iOS is functional, but it definitely has room for improvement. Track 8 is an alternative player that takes a few design cues from the Metro UI. The app provides a clean and beautiful interface where currently playing songs are superimposed over beautiful high-resolution images of the artist or band that change with each track. Metro is a design language which is mainly used for Windows mobile devices but has found its way into the Windows 8 operating system as well. Its main characteristic is the heavy use of typography as a design element instead of icons and graphics. While it doesn’t offer much functionality over the stock iOS music app, it is an aesthetically pleasing alternative. enderlabs.com/track-8

Onavo Extend If you’re traveling abroad and looking to cut back on your data plan, Onavo Extend is a must-have money-saving app. Onavo compresses your data so that you can do more with your mobile device on even the tightest data plan. It reduces roaming charges by providing you with a leaner version of the web. The app also shows you how much data you use and breaks it down by app, helping you manage which apps are data hogs. So how does that work, exactly? Everything you do on the Internet is routed through Onavo’s servers, compressed, then sent to your device. Setup is fast and easy, an installed profile will then run in the background and do its thing. To get Onavo, head over to the App Store or Google Play for a free download. onavo.com

Leap motion Hands-free motion control, a technology pioneered by Nintendo’s Wii and later improved upon by Microsoft with Kinect is coming to every computer early next year by way of the Leap. Leap represents an entirely new way to interact with your computer. It’s more accurate than a mouse, as reliable as a keyboard and more sensitive than a touchscreen. The Leap tracks the movement of your hands, fingers and even objects in front of it. If you’ve seen the gesture interfaces in Minority Report, you know what it does. Developers that take advantage of the Leap’s SDK will be able to do much more, however. Music composers and game developers are apparently beating down the company’s doors for access to the technology. The possibilities seem to be only limited by your imagination. leapmotion.com

games TEXT JOrn liefdeshuis

Atari Arcade

Where previous game reviews in this magazine have always been of the flashiest and most impressive new games, we’re going for a whole different perspective this time. We’re going back to where it all started, to the roots of modern gaming, to the old-school 8bit games. Like Pong.

Just about everyone has heard of Pong. The Atari game, released in 1972, consists out of two little blocks and an even smaller ‘ball’. Pong is an über-minimalist game of tennis, which is pretty good fun to play on your own, but even better when you play against someone else. It’s addictive to say the least. It was also the start of a digital revolution. The computer, a machine made for science, got a whole new perspective, it was now used for leisure. Atari, one of the first developers of this 8bit generation, is celebrating Pong’s 40-year anniversary. To celebrate this milestone, they’ve decided to bring some of their classic games back to life. No longer will you have to dust off your old console to play Asteroids, Missile Command, Pong or – my personal favourite – Super Blockbuster. You can now play them on the Atari website, too.

At the moment, there are only a handful of games available on Atari.com, but the developer has stated that these titles will be increased in number very soon. Either way, playing them remains an amazing feeling. During a long and boring class in school (or meeting at work) playing a game of Pong with a fellow student (or co-worker) is a great way to pass the time. Atari has upgraded both the graphics and the audio of their old school video games. While these updates are completely unnecessary from my point of view, they may make the games more accessible for whoever didn’t own an Atari or Nintendo back in the day. The new soundtrack for Super Breakout is decent, maybe even good, but it will never be a classic like the Tetris music. Not nice: many annoying commercials pop up in your screen while you’re playing. Downloading the new version of Internet Explorer can apparently solve this problem, but that won’t be released for another month. For now, it’s still great fun to play the games that have stood the test of time and are proven classics – even with some commercials. atari.com/arcade

Dutch influence

Dutch Influence opens with some beautiful aerial shots of the Netherlands. The famous windmills of Kinderdijk and busy Schiphol Amsterdam Airport evoke a sense of pride in a small nation that can occasionally do great things. Before you know it, the screen cuts to equally impressive, very different images of shiny beaches, hotels, and casinos in lights. We’ve left the low country by the North Sea, welcome to Miami and Las Vegas. Some Dutch people would like to take over your nightlife, thank you. Oh wait, they already have. When dance music started to become big business internationally, and in the United States in particular, the Dutch were suddenly everywhere. While trance DJs like Tiësto and Armin van Buuren ruled from the late 1990s onwards, people like Chuckie and later Afrojack introduced another sound. Hatim El Khatib, former club owner and promotor from Utrecht, was right there when this new ‘Dutch house’ style took off. As executive producer and together with supervising producer Samuel Comazzi and DOP Rikash Bobby Gobardhan, he jumped in at the right moment, capturing a new generation of Dutch DJs and producers as they blew up across the world. They’re right there with Chuckie when he’s trying to make a phonecall in the back of a limousine. They’re there on stage when Will.I.Am hears Sidney Samson play one his remixed tracks for the first time. Thanks to El Khatib’s well-connectedness, the three get the incredible access you need to pull of a documentary like Dutch Influence. Almost all of the Dutch DJs that are playing the main stages

at huge ‘EDM’ events these days are on camera. On stage, backstage (Afrojack is talking while he’s getting his hair cut), in the studio, walking down the street. The featurelength documentary, premiering at ADE, captures artists like Afrojack, Samson and Headhunterz on the way up during a pivotal time in dance music’s evolution. It is a capsule from a time when, as Afrojack says, ‘even if you have made twenty shit records, if you say you’re from the Netherlands, you have a leg up’. Apparently, it’s this kind of no-bullshit attitude that has brought them this far. Even though Chuckie sometimes wishes his local crowds would be as up-for-it as the Americans, he credits the Dutch audience’s critical stance. As Sander van Doorn explains: if you can play in the Netherlands, you can play anywhere. And if you can play in the over-populated Netherlands, you can play a lot – three bookings a night are not exceptional for very popular DJs, another reason why they can get so good so fast. Dutch Influence isn’t about the nuts and bolts of music production or even DJ’ing, and could’ve used some more critical perspective. What are the musical merits of this typical Dutch bleep house phenomenon that is here (there and everywhere) today, but, as Sensation boss Duncan Stutterheim states, likely gone tomorrow? That’s a question for another day. The party is still in full swing, and these Dutch guys are intent on making sure it keeps on going, in whatever shape or form. Dutch Influence: 18–21 October, multiple screenings at Pathe City Theater. Tickets: €10,50 (online), € 11,50 (door) dutchinfluence.com

Café de flore

Antoine is a DJ from Montréal. Most weekends, he leaves his attractive young girlfriend and his two beautiful daughters behind to fly to Europe and play in clubs and at festivals. Antoine is a very handsome man leading an extremely priviliged life. He is also not a very interesting man. Why couldn’t this film have been about Tiga? That would’ve been hilarious. But then again, as you find out after a while, this film isn’t really about Antoine (played by the popular Canadian singer Kevin Parent). It’s not even about his girlfriend or his children. The fact that he is a DJ is more or irrelevant to the story. Québécois director Jean-Marc Vallée makes it quite difficult to get a handle on his film by really showing two totally different, and for much of Café de Flore, seemingly totally unrelated stories. The first is about Antoine, and his relation with two women. Rose (Évelyne Brochu) is the beautiful girlfriend, who entered his life only a few years ago. Carole (Hélène Florent) is his childhood sweetheart, and the daughters’ mother. After two decades together, for no reason given, she’s been replaced. Carole tries to deal with with this situation with impossible, yoga-asssisted grace. The other story takes place not in present-day Canada, but in Paris, France, in 1969. Jacqueline is the extremely devoted

single mother to a young boy with Down syndrome. It’s the role of a lifetime for Vanessa Paradis, the gap-toothed French star who has acted in over three times as many films as she has released albums but is, outside of France, probably forever best known for her 1987 single ‘Joe le Taxi’. Jacqueline’s and her son Laurent’s storyline, where she struggles to keep him in regular education, could have been a different film altogether. Valée cuts between the stories for the entirety of Café de Flore, sometimes for just a couple of seconds. Both contain multiple flashbacks. It can be a rather maddening experience just to try to make sense of it. Until you slowly see to start to see the parallels. Jacqueline has to let go of her little boy, just as Carole has to accept that Antoine will not come back to her. While we’ve been watching Antoine’s not terribly interesting struggles (the superstar DJ life doesn’t satisfy, his alcoholic father doesn’t approve of his new relationship, blah blah), Carole turns out to be the central character after all. Vallée tries to make up for this with a late sub-plot about a psychic explaining her nightmares (and Jacqueline’s storyline) by way of reincarnation. It’s a rather bogus and unnecessary twist to an original piece of film-making whose emotional impact didn’t really require it. cafedeflorelefilm.com

BANKSY WATCHDOG

BANKSY DIDN’T PRODUCE THIS BOOK, says a bright yellow sticker on the cellophone wrapping. Nevertheless, Banksy: You Are an Acceptibel Level of Threat is the first major book in seven years of the British street artist’s work. It contains not only many excellent photographs taken by Banksy watchers, but also a serious (and sometimes not so serious) assessment, or justification even, of the worldview that inspires his work. I find it hard to believe that Banksy had nothing to do with this book, which was written by Patrick Potter and compiled and edited by Gary Shove. The author makes a point of chastising New York’s Keszler Gallery for not respecting Banksy’s wish for them to not sell two pieces of (unautheticated) street art. Would that same author write a book detailing the artist’s motivations without him at least having some involvement in it? This isn’t Potter’s first book on the subject, so he’s pretty deep into the subject matter, he is from Brighton, just like Banksy himself, and the two obviously share many left-wing/anarchist ideas. Either way, I’m sure Banksy is happy with the result. Potter’s text, which reveals a sense of irony and mischief similar to Banksy’s style, adds a valuable framework to the art on display. Art that is also vandalism. ‘If it was not illegal, it would not be street art,’ writes Potter. Some of the more interesting passages deal with street art’s implied criticism of the idea of property in the public space. One of my favourite Banksy

quotes, repeated in the book, is this one: ‘Any advertisement in public space that gives you no choice whether you see it or not is yours, it belongs to you, it’s yours to take, rearrange and re-use. Asking for permission is like asking to keep a rock someone just threw at your head.’ It would be interesting to compare Banky’s street art to his gallery work, which expresses more controversial ideas, apparently, but You Are an Acceptibel Level of Threat deals exclusively with the former. It shows Banksy (and it’s suggested that the individual ‘Banksy’ might well be a collective nowadays) as a modern-day Robin Hood, undermining the theatre of power with a stencil and some paint, hoping to inspire original thought. The point is not to buy this book or, if you can afford to, Banksy’s art. He’d much rather see you pick up a spraycan and try it out for yourself. While his themes (anti corporatism, surveillance and state oppression, pro individual expression, human dignity) may be predictable, Banksy’s pieces are usually pretty clever and funny, and the ideas worth repeating. You Are an Acceptibel Level of Threat sits totally on the same wavelength as its subject and while that may not make for the most critical perspective, it does what any good tagger does: repeat the message to gain traction. Banksy: You Are an Acceptible Level of Threat is published by Carpet Bombing Culture and is available from American Book Center in Amsterdam and The Hague.

column TEXT james worthy Image Kevinboitelle.nl

The magazine that you hold in your hands normally appears in Dutch. For this English-language ADE special, we turned to our former columnist James Worthy, now a successful author with two novels to his name. You see, James is half-English, and we figured he would be able to give us some nuanced insights into his shared cultural heritage. This, we soon realised, is not really his kind of approach…

born in Amsterdam ‘Some while ago I was born in Amsterdam. The city of Anne Frank, the city well known for it’s shit-filled and corpse-filled canals and the city where jolly people with beautifully constructed faces ride around on stolen bicycles. Because my father is English, I’ve never had the pleasure of doing the latter. My bike riding skills are impeccable, but sadly enough my face looks like it was built by a blind Polish prostitute. Seriously, every time I look in the mirror I see the mug of a retarded miner. No sirree, this boy was not a happy camper during puberty. I loathed the fact that my mother didn’t hook up with a normal looking Dutch bloke. ‘Being English is a hard job. Everybody fucking hates us. The Irish hate us, the Scottish hate us, but more importantly the football god and the weather god hate our bloody guts. We invented the game, but we play the damn game like a poor African child looking at a PlayStation 3 for the very first time. We play with passion and joy, but we suck. We suck so bad that we can swallow 6,000 liters of camel cum in a 90 minute period. And the weather, my god. The sun never shows up, but when he decides to pop around, he violates our skin and leaves us behind looking like a raped clown’s nose. ‘I detested my English blood so ferociously, that I promised myself to never write a single sentence in that hellish shitcunt language again. Obviously I failed. Better yet, I’m starting to enjoy writing this linguistic turd sandwich. Slowly

but surely I’m beginning to embrace the Englishness. My teeth are crooked as fuck, and I’m proud of it. I look like Wayne Rooney’s somewhat smarter and potty trained brother, and I’m proud of it. I just deep fried a pigeon and I ate it. YES, God save the Queen. ‘This linguistic turd sandwich is the first English thing I’ve written since 1993, when I wrote a love letter to Gene Hackman. It’s pretty difficult to write in English, mainly because I dream, think, eat, masturbate, talk and joke in Dutch. My vocabulary is so hopelessly inadequate, it’s genuinely frightening, I feel like Corky Thatcher after a booze invested snort fest. I can see the words in my head, but they never end up in my mouth. Like the luscious nipples of beautiful women; I can see them in my head, but without the use of Rohypnol, they never seem to end up in my mouth. Oh well. ‘Still, this was an utterly interesting and challenging task. I hope you enjoyed it, I know I did, but that’s probably because I’m getting paid to ruin your lovely language. Take care and give me a call when you’re in Amsterdam. I honestly could do with some additional lessons. My grammar is pathetic. Preposterous. Oh, and before I forget, fuck the Scottish. Those fat freckle-faced, skirt-wearing paedophile bastards. Come on, England! Free Prince Harry!’ jamesworthy.nl

OKKI NOKKI But while vinyl records are all but banned from many clubs, there is an on-going vinyl revival among music lovers who like to hear their musical treasures on a more personal, more physical format. It’s the artwork, and maybe even the sound quality. On the other hand, there is nothing more annoying than pop and crackle from records that are old and filthy. That’s where Johan Bezem comes in, who invented this handly professional record cleaner. The Okki Nokki weights 10 kilos, and contains a mechanical rotating plateau. While your record spins, spread the cleaning agent on its surface for the drainage tube to sniff the dust off. Available from the famous Concerto record shop in Amsterdam’s Utrechtsestraat. Price: € 399. okkinokki.nl

KORG MINI KAOSS PAD 2 AND KAOSSILATOR 2 Korg’s Mini Kaoss Pad 2 and Kaossilator 2 are both handheld devices for easy integration in your live or studio set-up. They look almost identical, but each one contains very different options. The Mini Kaoss Pad 2 is a DJ device that offers many options to implement effects like filtering and looping. It allows a sense of complete freedom because of the real-time use of its intuitive touchpad interface. It contains 100 different effects to create for instance breaks or peaks in your set. For this reason it can be a very handy tool to generate extra dynamics in your sets or sound design. The Kaossilator 2 feels like a studio in your hands. It’s a synthesizer with a very simple interface, making it user-friendly for almost anyone. It contains 150 built-in sounds that cover several styles of dance music. You can create drum patterns as well as melodic elements, and create tracks on the fly thanks to the recording options. Both are available for € 200. korg.com

J.C. RAGS ADE BAG Walking around town, you can try to spot fellow ADE goers by the bags under their eyes. A more reliable option is to look for J.C. RAGS’ official ADE merchandise. Every professional attendee gets a handy backpack when signing in for the conference, but there are also 500 bags on sale. The backpack is designed in the recognisable event colors black and yellow, contains some denim details, a roll-up technique for extra volume, and is equipped with very handy ADE survival tools like a bottle opener. You can buy it and other items at the J.C. RAGS store at the Heiligeweg, the webshop, or at the ADE website. Besides the bagpack, there is also a limited amount of T-shirts, which contains a specially designed map of Amsterdam’s modest metro network, of course with the typical ADE flavor. Bag: € 59,99, T-shirt € 29,99.

ADE FOOTBALL Despite Amsterdam’s international attitude, the Netherlands is rather a small country. However, sixteen-million strong, we have a reputation to uphold in two globbally popular pastimes: dance music and football (yes we know, we didn’t do so well at this year’s European Championship). The official ADE football offers completely new tools for the networking game. To recover from the night before, there are lots of parks to get some fresh air and kick a ball. And unless it’s raining during ADE, their should be an opportunity to challenge your competitors and relations to proof their worth on the field. They may claim to be raking in sales and bookings, but a game at the green pitch is something else completely. WIN ADE MERCHANDISE ON DJBROADCAST.NL

Blueprint label TEXT rené passet Image erosie

3024 isn’t just the postcode of an area in central Rotterdam. For the past five years it’s also been the name of a successful record label, a place where tastemakers like Julio Bashmore, Jacques Green and Mosca can all step out of their comfort zones. Label bosses Martijn Deykers AKA Martyn and Jeroen Erosie on building an identity while staying elusive. Last August, Martyn sent his ‘last tweet as an imigrant’ from his adopted hometown of Washington, DC. Three years after marrying his American girlfriend, the Dutchman can now call himself an American, too. ‘I also had to swear allegiance to the American flag,’ he beams over the transatlantic phone line, just a few days later. ‘It was a circus. There were people from 95 different nationalities.’ Much has changed these past five years for the producer, DJ and label boss, originally from the Dutch province of North-Brabant. When Deykers and his good friend Erosie (‘erosion’, a pseudonym) decided to start a record label in 2007, they had just traded their Eindhoven stomping grounds for Rotterdam, and both were at the crossroads of a new career. Erosie had to choose between teaching at the Willem de Kooning art academy, or pursue his graphic art to the fullest. Martyn had just stopped organizing drum ‘n bass parties to be able to concentrate on making his own music. ‘With my first singles I stumbled upon the matter that it took very long for my music to be released. I found it very frustrating to have to wait so long. If a production of mine finally came out after nine months, I was already way ahead.’ And so Martyn decided to start his own label, a vehicle for his own productions and, he stresses, Erosie’s work as well. ‘I found Jeroen’s art so cool. We have to do something with this, I thought. His graphic work fits very well with my music. He has the same hybrid approach as me.’ ELUSIVE After a handful of successful Martyn releases, 2562, AKA fellow countryman Dave Huismans, was the first outsider to put out a record on 3024. His single ‘Embrace’ (2008) is not easy to categorise. Is it techno, ‘abstract dubstep’ or some form of futuristic UK garage? It’s precisely this elusiveness that has become 3024’s trademark. Whether they are by Jon Convex, Mosca or Julio Bashmore, each of the label’s releases slips through your

fingers once you try to put a label them. ‘That’s the main philosophy of 3024’, confirms Martyn. ‘We want our releases to touch on two or three different genres, preferably more. My own single ‘Vancouver’ was picked up by a variety of DJs, from Gilles Peterson to Marcel Dettmann, who was able to mix it at half-speed in his techno sets.’ Such crossover applies to all 3024 artists, says Deykers. ‘Many guys that have released with us, have taken a step away from their own sound.’ If there is a common thread in 3024, it’s probably a love for bass music with a vibrant London touch. It’s an observation that is belied, nevertheless, by Berlin techno producer Redshape’s dark ‘Throw in Dirt’, which came out on 3024 earlier this year. SCRATCHING 3024’s kaleidoscopic approach is reflected in the artwork of Jeroen Erosie, featuring brightly coloured typography, with contrasting icons and frayed organic forms seemingly randomly stuck on top of it. When looking at all nineteen releases at once, you may start to see a pattern forming. ‘I usually take the last cover as the starting point for the artwork of the next record,’ reveals Erosie. ‘It could be called a kind of remixing, yes. I build my work in layers, just like many musicians on the label. I then keep scratching at the picture, until there is movement. Sometimes one of Martijn’s tracks has changed five times before it finally appears on a record. That goes for my artwork too.’ Although 3024 recently celebrated its fifth anniversary, the label has only ever released one album, Martyn’s own Great Lengths (2009). His second album, Ghost People (2011), appeared remarkably not on his label, but on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder. ‘Albums really are another market,’ says Deykers. Their promotion in particular takes a lot of energy and money. ‘I spent five months on promotion and interviews with my debut. I learned a lot from it, don’t get me wrong, but there was so much new music I could have made in those five months.’ 3024’s twentieth release is ‘Tactical Manoeuvres’ by Trevino (AKA drum ’n bass mainstay Marcus Intalex, who put out Martyn’s second record in 2005) and is out at the end of October. Martyn will be discussing the art and business of remixing with with Josh Wink, Boris Dlugosch, Timo Maas and Adam Beyer at the ADE conference.

ADE Playground ADE introduces a new platform to the ever expanding conference and festival. ADE Playground is a daytime event for the festival visitor. It aims to bring the spirit of the club nights right into the sunlight, spreading the ADE vibe all over Amsterdam, especially its canal area. In addition to ADE’s 800+ performances, ADE Playground puts on exhibitions, showcases, master classes and workshops at various notable locations in the city centre.

More gear: Pioneer hosts a series of Pioneer DJ School masterclasses and workshops at The Amsterdam View (Rokin 75, floor 6). This is the place to check the latest Pioneer products on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, noon tot 5 PM, free entrance. Even more gear: Native Instruments sets up shop and displays the full range of their studio wizardry, illustrating its special status via demonstrations and workshops that are open to all who care to drop by and hang out at Native Instrument’s ADE Playground site.

Obviously, ADE Playground is open to conference participants as well. The idea is to spread the congenial and relaxed atmosphere of the ADE conference out on the streets, bridging the mental and spatial gap between the dance professionals at ADE’s daytime hubs – Felix Meritis, De Balie, the Dylan Hotel – and the audience that continues to make ADE’s night program such a teeming success. While a fair share of ADE Playground activities are freeentry, several exclusive events are not, and are only open to holders of the ADE Card, which is limited and sells for € 10 at the ADE Playground website and ADE festival lounge. Besides exclusive entry to a number of Playground events, the ADE Card offers a discount rate at participating stores and shops.

Ten Haaf Projects (Laurierstraat 248) exhibits Vom Bleiben (About Staying), a series of photos by German artists André Giesemann and Daniel Schulz. Their topic is quite unique: the empty spaces of techno clubs after the party is over and the people have left. It is a special moment, before the ravage is cleaned out for the next party. This exhibition marks the very first time these photos have been on display outside Germany. Open noon-8 PM from Thursday through Saturday, free entrance for ADE Card holders.

PERFORMANCES, WORKSHOPS ETC. Melkweg Cinema proudly presents its first Films@ADE program, showing dance music-related movies daily at 5 PM (free for ADE Card holders) and 1am. The program includes Left Fields, an Austrian documentary about DIY musicians (Wednesday), 20-minute portraits of the scenes in Berlin, Detroit and Bristol from Resident Advisor’s Real Scenes series (Friday), and Charly Friedrich’s Can U Feel it (Saturday). From Thursday through Saturday, Akai Professional and Numark serve up a series of demonstrations and workshops at CoX (Marnixstraat 429). On Thursday and Friday, from 2-3 PM, Ski Oakenfull will host a Point Blank Ableton/ APC workshop. Open from noon until 7 PM, the full program offers a series of demonstrations and workshops, including an Akai Pro MPC workshop and Numark iDJ Pro performances. AKA AKA (Thursday) and Broombeck (Friday) top it off with live performances. As space is limited an early arrival is recommended. Entrance is free.

The studio of the SAE Institute Amsterdam opens its doors on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (2-10 PM) for a series of collective composing and recording sessions by reputed local musicians. Beat M Up Studio Soundclash @ SAE Studio is open exclusively to ADE Card holders and ADE Conference delegates. SAE Institute welcomes visitors from noon-6 PM. Red Bull Studio Amsterdam is a state-of-the-art recording studio, built to provide local talent and international artists with the ultimate facilities to make music. From Thursday till Saturday, this will be an official ADE Playground location, featuring a series of workshops by various ADE festival artists, giving first-hand insight into their music making methods. After you’ve checked these artists out in the clubs, you can enjoy their sets once more on Red Bull Music Academy Radio. Check the ADE Playground program to see who’s lined up for the masterclasses, what nights will be recorded and how to enlist. Limited Tiefschwarz Mike Huckaby, tastemaker, educator and sound designer from Detroit with a series of great deep house remixes for Deepchord, Loco Dice and Juan Atkins under his belt, will

demonstrate Native Instruments’ Maschine and answer questions. The afternoon is hosted by Tomorrow Is Now, Kid! and Amsterdam Roest at Czaarpeterstraat 213 on Saturday 20 October from 3-5 PM. Entrance fee € 12, ADE Card holders € 6, limited capacity.

For the duration of ADE, Stanislavski, located at the ground floor of the Stadschouwburg on Leidseplein, functions as ADE’s Festival Lounge. Here you find all the latest festival and ADE Playground info, the ADE Card, festival tickets and even ADE Playground activities.

All throughout ADE, the J.C. Rags clothing store (Heiligeweg 49) gives a 20% discount to ADE Card holders. On Thursday, J.C. Rags presents an in-store performance by Maceo Plex and Terry Toner; on Friday, Tiefschwarz will man the decks, both nights from 8.30-11 PM. These are invitation only, keep an eye on ADE Playground info on how to obtain tickets. And remember: there’s much more to ADE Playground than this.

Who’s Next ? Of course you can find a truckload of household names at this year’s ADE festival. The big players, the major attractions, the Weatheralls and Van Doorns of this world are all here. But what if you’ve just started producing music in your own bedroom and are everything but a luminary? ADE Next, ADE University and ADE Playground can show you how to move forward when you haven’t earned your stripes just yet. ADE Next is a platform for new talent with a broad program featuring name producers, top DJs and other professionals such as managers and agents from around the globe, all eager to share their knowledge and experience. What does that mean? How about people like Sander van Doorn and Objekt explaining to you personally how they do what they do. Both of these (very different) producers will bring their home studio (!) to the conference, and you will be able to book one-on-one sessions with them. Are you more a remix kind of guy or gal? In that case, don’t miss out on the workshop lead by Marc JB from Bimbo Jones, who’s been on remix duties for major pop stars like Lady Gaga, Rihanna, P!nk, Ke$ha, Kelis and Katy Perry. Next door, Dutch house crack Vato Gonzalez will conduct a masterclass dissecting one of his club hits. Demolition Next Generation presents four freshmen from the Netherlands. Jameszoo, Boaz van de Beatz, Dannic and Halp are all making waves in the industry, each in his own way. If you feel comfortable enough to face techno baron Dave Clarke, the much feared and brutally honest Demolition Panel is were you should head. Drop your demo in the demo box that’s set up at the registration desk during the conference, and top DJ and producer Dave Clarke himself will be the

judge of it. ‘Although the title of the panel suggests explosive commentary,’ he comments, ‘you should see this as an opportunity to get support and great insight into your unsigned music by some of the top professionals in this field.’ That’s a relief. Crate Digging 2.0 ‘Nope, sorry, I’m all out’ used to be record store lingo for ‘I certainly do have that record you are looking for, and you’ll get it when hell freezes over. Meanwhile, I’m keeping it for my hotshot DJ friend.’ Crate digging has changed, however, as illustrated by the demise of the record store as a landmark in the world of dance music. This is why this panel is named DJ to DJ: Crate Digging 2.0, and Guerilla Speakerz are there to show you some insights. ADE asked Michel de Hey, one of the key-figures when it comes to Dutch techno and a jury member at Vinylized, the leading competition for Dutch dance producers, what he would have done if ADE had been around when he started out as a DJ back in the day. Here’s what he said: ‘My advice to young producers is to go and visit every party where your particular style is played. At the conference: come prepared! Stalking people is not a good idea, but handing out the right music to the right people is. Do not put a hundred tracks on a CD, but choose two or three tracks that you regard as your best. Furthermore, all the great DJs and producers that I know are not only good at producing music or spinning records, but equally proficient at networking. It’s part of the job. ADE sure is helpful because the chance that you’ll bump into a particular label, DJ, producer or promoter is huge.’ ADE Next, 20 October at Felix Meritis. How to prepare for ADE

Welcome! So you made it to the ’dam. Now brace yourself for the most jam-packed ADE so far. Whether it’s a small venues like OT301 or a huge halls like Ziggo Dome, the whole city will be living and breathing dance music for five days in a row. Opportunities to meet new people, learn something, be inspired, do business and, obviously, dance your ass off will abound. Everyone’s here from promotor to PR agent, artist, label, manager and distributor and they are ready to party with you. How can you enhance your stay? ADE’s day program is held once again in and around the 18th century Felix Meritis building at the Keizersgracht. It’s one of the most beautiful and historical spots in the city, with the bustling Jordaan neighbourhood and a wide range of boutique shops right around the corner. A good way to spend the morning is to walk around in the 9 Straatjes (‘nine streets’) area, where ADE has its headquarters. Contemplate last night’s mayhem while enjoying an oh so necessary espresso. After the seminars, head here for some great food before walk over out to the famous Paradiso or one of the

other venues around town. Some venues will be closer to your temporary home than others. Extra large venues like the Heineken Music Hall and Ziggo Dome for instance are located some way out of the city centre, so check the schedule, have Google Maps on hand and make sure you get in a taxi or subway train in time, i.e. half an hour before. Also don’t forget to check out the latest addition to the program: ADE Playground. It’s a new day program that spreads the ADE vibe across to a new set of locations with people playing on a boat on the canals, high profile exhibtions, film or installations. There will be exclusive Playground events for ADE Card holders as well as promotional items, goodie-bags and other suprises. And last but not least, one very useful piece of advice: please don’t cross the street without looking both left and right. Amsterdammers love their bicycles and will show no mercy if you happen to get in their way while browsing through the ADE program guide looking for that cool bar where the next big thing is suppposed to be playing a midafternoon set. We still love you, though.

Disclaimer: it’s perfectly possible to enjoy ADE without going to any of these parties. There are plenty others, with great Djs. If, however, you get lost in the listings and would like for DJB to give you some some clues to five fantastic nights out, here are just a dozen.

ADE tips DEKMANTEL @ MC THEATER WEDNESDAY 17 OCTOBER Two rooms of house and techno with a great soundsystem and an even better line-up. Dekmantel host parties for afficionados and for their ADE opening party join forces with Paramount Artists to present Carl Craig’s 69, Nina Kraviz, Agoria, Stacey Pullen, Radio Slave, Paul Woolford, Francesco Tristano, Trus’me, next to Indigo Aera’s Maarten Mittendorff and Jasper Wolff as well as Dekmantel’s own Jan van Kampen.

THE DJOON EXPERIENCE @ SUGAR FACTORY WEDNESDAY 17 OCTOBER Djoon is a club in Paris specialising in ‘soulful’ dance music of many kinds. It has close ties to the South African deep-house scene and for their (by now) annual Djoon Experience at ADE they like to showcase these by inviting top SA DJs Black Coffee and Culoe De Song, as well as several of their own residents.

WARUNG TOUR/KOMPAKT SHOWCASE @ MELKWEG WEDNESDAY 17 OCTOBER It’s not just the economy that’s booming, Brazil dance scene is doing pretty good too. Itajaí’s Warung Beach Club bringing its vibe to Amsterdam in October might sound like a challenge, but then again they have Brazil’s biggest techno export Gui Boratto playing. His Kompakt collegues Michael Mayer, Kölsch and Jennifer Cardini are in the other room.

ADE MONSTER MASH @ MELKWEG THURSDAY 18 OCTOBER If you’re only going to one electro party this year, better make it this one. Erol Alkan, Dan Avery, Justin Robertson, Crookers, Brodinski, Gesaffelstein, Para One, Surkin, Club Cheval, Rory Phillips and Holland’s Joost van Bellen, RipTide and Henzel & Disco Nova are alle playing and if that’s not a monster line-up, nothing is.

GREEN ROOM INDOOR FESTIVAL @ STUDIO/K THURSDAY 18 OCTOBER Green Room is a party that brings the finest in bass music to Amsterdam quicker than most. Make your way to Amsterdam’s East side for three rooms of the cuttingest-edge dance music from the UK, US, Canada and Holland. Redinho, Lando Kal, Sinjin Hawke, Helix and Amsterdam’s Presk and DJ+ are all performing.

VRIJ @ HET CONCERTGEBOUW FRIDAY 19 OCTOBER Vrij (‘free’) likes the challenge of putting on parties at unusual locations. Best known is their sold-out festival at the Olympic Stadium in the Spring, and for ADE they move to the world-famous Concertgebouw. Headliner Junkie XL knows a thing or two about classical composing, as his dayjob is scoring Hollywood blockbusters. Today he will present his new, disco-inspired album Synthesize.

DEKMANTEL ADE UK SPECIAL @ MC THEATER FRIDAY 19 OCTOBER Dekmantel knows its techno, but they’re nothing if not versatile. UK bass is the sound of Amsterdam’s incrowd, and you can be sure to find them at Dekmantel’s UK Special, featuring Julio Bashmore, Joy Orbison, Boddika, Space Dimension Controller, Lone and Krystal Klear, as well as Holland’s Audio Culture crew, 751 and Dekmantel’s own Casper Tielrooij.

DAVE CLARKE PRESENTS @ MELKWEG FRIDAY 19 OCTOBER If you know anything about techno, you know that Dave Clarke is going to put on a great night when given half a chance. His annual ADE party at the Melkweg is bound to live up to its reputation with a line-up that features Green Velvet, Marcel Fengler, Octave One, Blawan, DJ Sneak, Estroe, ESHU’s Roger Gerressen and of course Mr Clarke himself.

CLONE X DELSIN X RUSH HOUR @ TROUW FRIDAY 19 OCTOBER So you’ve come to Holland for ADE. The least you can do is pay your respects to three of the finest record labels the country has to offer, at the best club in the land. It’s going to be fun, trust me! You can’t beat a line-up that includes Tom Trago, San Proper, Legowelt & Xosar, Antal (Rush Hour), A Made Up Sound, Dexter, Gerd, Serge (Clone), Delta Funktionen and Conforce (Delsin).

LOVELAND ADE @ HOTEL ARENA FRIDAY 19 OCTOBER Amsterdam’s Loveland presents a night with Gregor Tresher’s Break New Soul label. The boss himself plays a 6-hour set together with Karotte, supported by friend-of-the-family Petar Dundov. On Saturday night, Loveland hosts a second party across four rooms at the Westergasfabriek, with Marco Carola, Sebastien Léger, Kevin Saunderson, Secret Cinema and many more.

BODY & SOUL @ MC THEATER SATURDAY 20 OCTOBER François K, Joe Claussell and Danny Krivit’s famous deep-house and disco party comes to Holland for the first time, people have been waiting for years for this to happen. Dekmantel has Juju & Jordash, Melon and Mark du Mosch lined up for the second room if it’s all getting too emotional for you.

TROUW OP ZONDAG @ TROUW SUNDAY 21 OCTOBER Trouw op Zondag (‘Trouw on Sunday’) is the club’s regular Sunday party and for its ADE special they’ve lined up a pretty impressive roster of international residents. Mind you, Prins Thomas, Cassy, Mano Le Tough and Tale Of Us don’t play here every month so it’s still pretty special. Your last ADE party starts at 9 in the morning and doesn’t end until 3 at night.

Dutch dance goes global It’s hard to find a major dance event in the world nowadays that doesn’t include at least one DJ or act from the Netherlands on the bill. Dutch dance is everywhere, from Stockholm to Kaapstad and from Shanghai to Los Angeles. Dance music is an important Dutch export item, adding over € 50 million to the Dutch economy in 2010. Dutch dance has exploded onto the global scene. Between 2008 and 2011, the number of international performances of Dutch dance artists has tripled. Trance meisters Tiësto, Armin van Buuren and Ferry Corsten, who used to fly the flag for Dutch dance by themselves, are now part of a very varied pack of Dutch dance producers who cover the full spectrum of dance styles between them, from Chuckie’s Caribbean-inspired ‘Dirty Dutch’ to Headhunterz’ innovative hardstyle sounds. When dance went overground in the United States in 2009, Dutch dance producers where ready to stake their claim.

They have always had an eye on the horizon, as symbolized by the mere fact of the Amsterdam Dance Event. ‘ADE created more awareness for Dutch artists like me,’ confirms Chuckie. ‘By participating in panels I was able to share my vision and music with a high level of industry people. Now my ADE looks like speed-dating. It’s insane how much business my team and I can do in less than a week’. Industry stalwart Armin van Buuren agrees: ‘Although, I believe trance is under-represented at ADE when it’s one of dance’s most popular genres, I am very glad there is an event like ADE. It’s very simple, everybody who is somebody is present at ADE.’ ADE was instrumental in helping Funkerman to make the next step. ‘ADE was the best opportunity to meet people from the business. I can honestly say that a big part of the more serious business we did afterwards had something to do with people we met there.’ Funkerman’s label partner Fedde Le Grand: ‘ADE worked out very well for Flamingo Recordings. It helped us to open doors to the international dance market.’

dedicated visuals program

This year, ADE partners with Beamlab, the bi-monthly seminar on media and visuals at Pakhuis de Zwijger, to present a dedicated VJ conference where motion graphics specialists discuss their work and explain their set-ups, illustrating (in more sense than one) the growing importance of stagecraft and motion graphics for live electronic and DJ performances.

us to deliver a creative visual display, which is improvised as opposed to pre-recorded,’ Walenciak stresses. ‘Sometimes Armin is criticized for being too perfect. His set and our visuals sync so well some people assume it is prerecorded, but it’s not.’

Beamlab, which started out in 2005, is a place where technical and creative professionals meet in an interdisciplinary environment. Coders talk to producers and VJs and vice versa and discuss their trade, focusing on digital media and (moving) images. One of those involved in Beamlab’s ADE program is Eindhoven-based Eyesupply. Active since 2003, the company tends to the visual aspects of the DJ performance for a slew of international superstars, including Armin van Buuren, Afrojack and Swedish House Mafia.

Kevin and his Eyesupply colleagues (a full dozen of them) are busy people. Besides creating visuals at some 700 DJ gigs per year, they also develop the visuals for their client artists. ‘Four people are creating visuals full-time at the office,’ he explains. ‘The artists have individual styles of visuals. Abstract images suit Armin’s trance, while Afrojack prefers a more aggressive, games-like visual approach.’ Since 2010, when Eyesupply got sole responsibility for Van Buuren’s visuals, Walenciak has travelled more countries than he can remember. ‘It’s almost a full-time job just applying for travelling visa,’ he laughs.

Individual styles ‘It’s all about being flexible,’ says Kevin Walenciak of Eyesupply. ‘We use a modular set-up, so the DJ retains his freedom while the music and the supporting visuals are synced.’ Eyesupply uses customized software, written by The Hague-based company Resolume. ‘For Armin van Buuren we use various loops of abstract visuals. ADE

Obviously, you’re going to get your dose of electronic music at ADE. But what if you don’t want to hear bouncy techno beats at debilitating allnighters, and would like to see some old-fashioned musicians with proper instruments? Well, they’re here too! How about some British and Norwegian jazz for instance, or an iPad concert on a 4D soundsystem, both at the stunning Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ. ADE or no, Muziekgebouw ’t IJ is always worth a visit. The concert hall on the IJ lake (hence the name), is an acoustical gem and the architecture is remarkable, too. During ADE, pop, improv, contemporary composed music and electronics meet under the banner of ‘technology in music’. American composer and performer Marko Ciciliani and Dutch recorder player Erik Bosgraaf connect the dots between ‘whisper music and digital typhoons’ with a variety of synthesizers and effects pedals. Before and after the ‘iPad Concerto’, DJs (sorry, there’s no escaping those!) will play on a specially designed 4D soundsystem (Friday 19 October).

The experimental vocalizations of Sidsel Endresen, whose improvising style creates a vigorous dynamic with Ståle Storløkken (keyboards) and Thomas Strønen (drums and electronics) from Humcrush, are also worth hearing (also on 19 October). The Norwegian free-jazz singer, coming from years of solo work and collaborations with musicians like Bugge Wesseltoft and Helge Sten, includes the timbre of contemporary electronic music in her rather unusual performances. There’s a new kid in town, and it goes by the name of North Sea Jazz Club. Open for less than half a year, it offers New York vibes in a David Lynchian setting. Besides the electronic music program throughout ADE, there’s also a Portico Quartet performance on Saturday 20 October. Drawing on electronica, ambient, classical and dance music, Londoners Jack Wyllie (saxophone), Milo Fitzpatrick (bass), Duncan Bellamy (drums) and Keir Vine (percussion) play a strange and beautiful, futuristic music. Think Burial, Mount Kimbie and Flying Lotus, but without those damned laptops.

Music & Bits ‘Why visit Music & Bits? When your interest is music and the internet is your tool, these are the people you want to meet.’ Music & Bits is a dedicated conference program within ADE that focuses on trends, business opportunities and the latest developments in the world of online music. This year’s edition sees the addition of the Tech Lounge, where tech companies and the electronic music industry to meet. More importantly… breakfast is served! Each day, an hour before Music & Bits starts for the day, you can meet the speakers in an informal breakfast setting. Vincent Lindeboom is one of the initiators of Music & Bits, is a strong believer in the success stories of beginning artists who find their ways to fame with modern techniques. ‘It’s possible for relatively small artists to promote themselves worldwide thanks to online techniques. Apart from the standard social media channels such as Facebook, there are many online tools available which are evolving every day. At Music & Bits we want to show the latest developments, but we also want to show how to use these tools in an efficient way.’ But Music & Bits does not focus on beginning artists alone, emphasizes Lindeboom. ‘More experienced artists will find the lectures of interest as well, for example on how to keep

control over your web presence, or how to broadcast and monitor new tracks.’ The complete program is divided into four subcategories: Music, Arts & Design will address the visual side of music, game mechanics will have their say at Music & Games, and you can hear how to make money in the evolving ecosystem around music at Music & Business. It’s not only artists that should think about coming to Music & Bits, music consumers lovers in general should find something of interest. ‘There are countless new ways to discover new and old music online, and filtering out essential information has become increasingly important. Some of the most interesting people who are dedicated to filtering key information on the web are present at Music & Bits,’ says Lindeboom. And that’s not all. Music & Bits welcomes CASH Music (Maggie Vail, US), Whosampled? (Nadav Poraz, GB), TastemakerX (Sandro Pugliese, US), Topsin Media (Shamal Ranasinghe, US), Shuffler.fm (Tim Heineke, NL), SongPop (Mathieu Nouzareth, FreshPlanet Inc., US), This Is My Jam (Matthew Ogle, US), We Make Awesome Sh.it (Syd Lawrence, GB) and reps from Turntable.fm and Last.fm. amsterdam-dance-event.nl/music-and-bits

DJ Mag Top 100 Awards Show DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs poll and ADE are a natural fit. Both began in the mid-1990s, when the dance music industry was growing rapidly, and both have since grown in size and stature as global phenomena, along with the music. Last year, the DJ Mag Top 100 Awards Show moved from London to Amsterdam and this year, the glitzy production returns to ADE. It started out as an in-house pet project and it has evolved into the biggest online popularity poll on the planet. The DJ Mag Top 100 DJs Poll is the barometer of global dance, recording the shifts in popularity of the world’s best loved – and best paid – record spinners. Since 27 June of this year, the quicksilver in the barometer of global dance has been rising. That day at noon, the poll opened its doors to voters. And their numbers have been increasing steadily. This year, well over half a million clubbers from some 170 countries have cast their vote before the poll closed 30 August at midnight. In 1997, the first year the DJ Mag poll was open to outside

voters (after starting in 1993 as a pet project of DJ Magazine editors and contributors), some 700 people answered the magazine’s call. Carl Cox won that year, as he did in 1998, when the voting process went from snail mail to online. Going digital meant that the the poll was no longer restricted to the magazine’s largely UK-based readers; it became an international affair, as reflected in the list of winners. Initially, British DJs reigned – Cox, Paul Oakenfold, Sasha, John Digweed. The string of British winners was broken by Tiësto (The Netherlands) in 2002, who topped the list for three consecutive years. Impressive, but not a record. Armin van Buuren (also from the Netherlands) was voted king of the clubs four years in a row (2007-2010). Read into it what you like: poll winners Paul van Dyk (Germany, 2005-2006) and David Guetta (France, 2011) hail from the European continent as well. Will American hotshot Skrillex finally be the first DJ to break the European stronghold this year? DJ Mag Top 100 Awards Show: Friday 19 October, 10pm at The Convention Factory. Tickets: € 25/42,40.

Jeff Mills

Jeff Mills will perform his soundtrack to the 1929 Fritz Lang movie Woman in the Moon at EYE Film Institute. It is the third time Mills soundtracks Lang’s fantasy on space travel, after debuting his all-new electronic score in Paris last year for a Lang retrospective at the Cinématique Française. Mills, who developed his interest in SF in his childhood and collects classic pulp science-fiction, composed an electronic score for Lang’s masterpiece Metropolis (1927) in 2000. He praises the German director ‘cinematic perspective and apparent devotion to thoroughly play out and address complex social matters in a convincing way.’ Woman in the Moon, originally titled Frau im Mond, was Lang’s last silent movie, and is hailed as the first ‘serious’ SF film. Scientifically spot on, the movie looks brilliant too. Lang used state-of-the-art (for 1929) modernist design for the scenes in the protagonist’s apartment and the launch of the moon rocket is visually and conceptually stunning, using innovative modeling as well as crane shots. Through his storytelling, the director was able to explain the then-new concept

of moon travel. Lang today is still utterly modern in his use of media to propel the story.

‘One of the first things I realized,’ says Mills of his Metropolis soundtrack, ‘was that techno and electronic music was being greatly understated in terms of its ability to expand beyond the dance floor – that its structure is perfect in relaying certain things about people’s concerns and visions about the future. This is an example of broadening the genre in a meaningful way.’ All of Woman in the Moon’s 164 minutes is set to newly composed music. Mills: ‘I think there is no better way to do a cine-mix than to start from the ground up by creating the music to apply a tailored result. The music can only be heard during this film presentation.’ Woman in the Moon by Jeff Mills, EYE Film Institute, Wednesday October 17, 9pm. This summer, Amsterdam-based afrobeat group Jungle By Night recorded was holed up in the local Red Bull Studio with The Gaslamp Killer. The DJ/producer from California had picked a selection of favourite songs for the Dutch band to cover under his supervision. Their collaboration has been just one of many special projects to take place in the Amsterdam studio since it opened earlier this year. While the young musicians played their asses off, musical director Gaslamp Killer was jumping around in the control room like a madman. The nine-strong Jungle By Night collective have taken the Netherlands by storm over the last year with their enthousiastic blend of afrobeat, soul and funk. They first met The Gaslamp Killer when both performed at 2011’s Pitch Festival in Amsterdam. ‘I walked into the hall, heard them play and thought: these guys are awesome’, explains the American DJ. ‘As I came close to the stage, I thought: what the fuck, these young motherfuckers playing this music. I was shocked!’ Both parties kept in touch by e-mail and kept seeing each other at Gaslamp Killer’s Dutch gigs. A year later, both finally had time for some studio action. Jungle By Night drummer Sonny Groeneveld: ‘We went into the project really open-minded. We are both very interested in music

from all over the world and we are both really into music that has a strong energy. When we met, we had a good vibe, we really liked each other’s approach to music and doing things things our own way. We come from quite different worlds, but if you have the same energy for music, things will work out.’ Prior to meeting in de the studio, The Gaslamp Killer had sent over six song suggestions to Amsterdam. ‘These are songs I always wanted intrumental edits of. And as a fan, I wanted to recreate them with these guys. The Black Sabbath song was my main goal. I wanted to do a metal song with an afrobeat/funk-rock band.’ While working in the studio, the idea came together beautifully. ‘And by beautifully I mean ugly!’, screams Gaslamp Killer. ‘These guys are fucking epic, man! Did you hear what they came up with? That’s fucking amazing.’ With Gaslamp Killer’s new album Breakthrough out now and Jungle By Night touring behind their excellent debut album Hidden (2012), what will happen with the release of their collaboration is not exactly clear at this point, so keep your ears and eyes on their respective social media statuses. redbullstudio.nl

Headhunterz

Hard Dance Event is the ADE sub-conference that aims to connect professionals in the harder styles of dance music. It allows artists, promotors, entrepeneurs and other professionals to discuss, experience and continue current and new developments. This year, HDE’s showcases, lectures and talks move from ID&T’s headquarters to the Melkweg, right in the centre of Amsterdam. Hard dance is booming around the world and now it has been fully integrated in ADE.

studio working on new stuff.’ The heavy touring can take its toll on one’s creativity. ‘My girlfriend gave me a card that said: succes is not the key to happiness, but happiness is the key to succes. That made me think. So I went back to making music for me instead of for money. Trying to stay true to myself. I feel it’s the ultimate test for an artist.’ Rebergen also went for the higher-quality bookings instead of quantity. ‘One of the highlights was Electric Daisy Carnival and I’m looking forward to my trip to Australia, too.’

One of hard dance’s biggest stars is up for his biggest event ever. On 20 October, Q-dance presents Headhunterz at the brand new Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam. It’s a big moment for 26-year-old Willem Rebergen AKA Headhunterz – and for hard dance music as a whole. The venue can house about 17,000 ravers, who can expect a very special showcase by Headhunterz. ‘I feel this is the next step towards a wider recognition, not just for me but for the whole scene in The Netherlands and around the world. A lot of people still don’t know what hardstyle is about, and I think this night can serve as inspiration for artists and DJs alike.’

Since his humble beginnings as a teenager playing in a club in the small village of Elst, Rebergen’s rise to fame has seen him winning a DJ contest for a spot at Defqon.1 to selling out Amsterdam’s Heineken Music Hall. ‘I think I was at the right place at the right time for hardstyle. Without really thinking about it, I started using more melodic features and other influences in my music.’ It was this innovation, and the fact that on stage he is a true performer that made Headhunterz a worldwide star. With the show at Ziggo Dome he’s now entering a new ‘even bigger room’ phase in his career. ‘It will be the ultimate collaboration between me and Q-Dance. The best of both worlds!’

In 2011, Headhunterz was ranked seventeenth in DJ Magazine’s Top 100. It was a crazy year with maybe just a tad too much of travelling and work. This year, for Rebergen, has been one of redefining his career. ‘I wanted to go back to the source, and that meant spending a lot of time in the

Vato Gonzalez

Last year, Dutch DJ and producer Björn Franken AKA Vato Gonzalez scored a UK Top Ten hit with ‘Badman Riddim (Jump)’, a track he originally recorded five years earlier. Instead of desperately trying to come up with a follow-up, he followed his heart. At ADE Next, Gonzalez will break down his M.O., from the first spark of inspiration to the final product. DJB: ‘Dutch house’ and Chuckie’s Dirty Dutch are two well-established notions in dance music. You’ve made this into Dirty House. Are these all the same thing? ‘Dirty House is a completely separate movement that is rooted in the streets. I developed the concept after I noticed that the record industry was ignoring the sounds that actually made people dance. The focus was only on the credibility of the artist, the coolness of the label and the quality of sound. It lacked the essence of what house music should be about: making people dance. Dirty House is not a genre, it’s about how well a record can rock your socks off. We DJs tend to think too much in terms of genres, quality and mastering when the audience cares about none of this.’

DJB: Is it a coincidence that both you and Afrojack are from the small town of Spijkenisse and did you know each other when you were both unknown? ‘I’ve known Afrojack ever since he was four or five years old. We went to the same primary school, but since he was a little younger than me, we never had that much to do with each other. When I was about 18, I was teaching breakdancing at a community center. Afrojack was one of the

guys attending the course and since then we’ve had a little more contact. He used to DJ at parties that I put on and I think I’m one of the few promoters who can say he has booked Afrojack, Hardwell and Vato Gonzalez at an event with a budget of two bottles of vodka.’ DJB: How did ‘Badman Riddim’ come together? ‘‘Badman Riddim’ was made on the same computer my dad did his taxes on. I had forgotten all about it when one day I got a phone call. They told me MJ Cole was playing ‘Badman Riddim’ on the radio. It had taken the UK club scene by storm. No publisher. No label. Unknown producer. It proved that if your music is what the people want, the music will do to the talking for you. It didn’t take long for Ministry of Sound to sign me, but it did take about a year to replay the break. When Foreign Beggars came up with their verses it was finished.’ DJB: How do you follow-up a hit like that? ‘The big problem with ‘Badman Riddim’ was that I’d made the tune five years prior, I wasn’t in that state of mind anymore. I tried a few tunes in the same fashion but none of them had the heart of the original so I did the only thing that felt right. I didn’t make the requested follow. I continued doing what my heart was telling me, which resulted in about five completely different tunes that are now getting scheduled for release.’ Masterclass with Vato Gonzalez @ ADE Next, 20 October at Felix Meritis. Afrojack

He’s been Holland’s fastest rising star of the last couple of years, without a doubt. 25-year-old Nick van de Wall from Spijkenisse has gained worldwide recognition for his crisp, no-holds-barred productions and skilled DJ sets. With over a hundred gigs just this summer, the Afrojet has hit all major party cities in Europe and the US. With ADE in sight, where he’ll bring his Jacked party to the Amsterdam’s famous Paradiso for what promises to be a classic opening night of the festival, the tallest man on the scene reflects on another crazy year and looks f.

Afrojack started the Dutch leg of the Jacked concept at Amsterdam’s Air club last year at ADE. ‘The first party was a total madhouse, with Steve Aoki, huge LED screens, champagne and CO2 cannons. It was the kind of party you don’t see a lot in Amsterdam. So for ADE I liked the idea of doing the next one at the legendary Paradiso. We want to bring the high quality experience that I see when I play all around the world. I host my own party and I want to welcome my friends from the labels and the clubs where I play all over the world at my house. And of course I want to show the Dutch people how big the whole thing has become internationally.’ With the new wave of EDM sweeping the globe, there’s a newfound interest in a scene that has grown exponentially over the last few years. Van de Wall suspects that The Black Eyed Peas’ and David Guetta’s multi-million selling 2009 collaboration ‘I Gotta Feeling’ was the spark that set the flame. ‘A lot of people say: dance music has become “commercial”. That’s because a lot of people like it! That’s what happens. Maybe it will happen to ADE too, like it happened to WMC. It that bad? The more people are interested in dance music, the better. They are opening up to the love you experience when you are in a club with a thousand people you never met, who all become one when the DJ plays that certain song.’ Being a Dutchman in dance music definitely helps, thinks Van de Wall. ‘Dutch stands for quality. We tend to be laidback, down to earth and not give you any bullshit. I don’t know of any Dutch producers who are doing well that are faking it, you know, having just one shit song that you haven’t even produced yourself and saying you’re the man. Armin always delivers with a fantastic show, the same thing goes for Sander Kleinenberg. International promotors tell

me that people from the Netherlands are easy to work with, that we are gezellig. I always go for the best possible. Every night has to be legendary. You know that for most of the people out there, there aren’t that many nights that give them that kind of an experience. They buy a ticket for an incredible night out and they deserve to get one.’ Afrojack sees an even brighter future for dance music. ‘It will get bigger, without a doubt. At least for the next five years dance music will be on top. And electronic music will win anyway. It just much easier to learn how to make electronic music than how to play guitar and start a band. There will be exponentionally more producers than bands in the future. And if it will be drum ’n bass, hip-hop, dubstep or trance doesn’t matter. For me personally the experience of mixing two sevenminute four-to-the-floor tracks will never be bettered. You’re making a classical piece with records. Of course you can mix from hit record to drop to hit record, but then you will never get people in that real trance. The attention span is really short right now. Look at Skrillex. I’ve seen his shows and I love them, but it’s only about the drop. You see dubstep artists making that crossover now. I saw Knife Party playing and they went from dubstep to a hit records to drum ‘n bass and back to dubstep. A mishmash of stuff to prevent it from becoming boring.

‘The only downside of becoming famous with hit records is that you have to play them when you are DJing. It’s a luxury problem. I have to combine two things: being Afrojack, the artist whose people songs know, and being the DJ that I love to be and play some different stuff to make people think. For instance, I always play ‘Lotus’ by Mumbai Science in my sets at the moment. It’s a seven-minute long acid record that I heard in a 2ManyDJs set. It’s hard sometimes to keep the balance, but that’s my job.’ You won’t see Afrojack doing a big Skrillex-like set-up with synced video screens and a big space helicopter anytime soon. ‘I am a DJ, I need to be able to make musical choices on the fly. Of course I could do prepared sets, but I would bore myself to death.’ Kings of Ace: 20 October, 10 PM at the Sand. Tickets € 22,50. Afrojack presents Jacked: 17 October at Paradiso (sold out). www.afrojack.com

This year, a dynamic Dutch electronic trio is making waves overseas with a banging live show. Nobody Beats The Drum from Utrecht/Amsterdam have spent over three months of 2012 touring North-America with their 333 extravaganza and are ready for their homecoming Melkweg show at Amsterdam Dance Event.

103 nobody beats the drum

‘This was the most memorable tour of our career so far,’ says Sjam Sjamsoedin in the Nobody Beats The Drum studio in Amsterdam’s Bos & Lommer neighbourhood. The band has just returned from a three-and-a-half month tour through dance music’s promised land. ‘We’ve traveled the whole of the States to show the people what we do and the response was quite overwhelming. After playing in the Netherlands for quite a while, the opportunities that arose this year really feel like a new phase in our career.’ Nobody Beats The Drum had its humble beginnings in 2003. Jori Collignon and Sjam Sjamsoedin met through the band 6 Of Your Best Friends, a Utrecht-based collective that has spawned more than a few successful Dutch hiphop and dance acts. Together with visual artist Rogier van der Zwaag they started NBTD and won the national Grote Prijs van Nederland competition that same year. After a first 12” in 2005 it took the band until the Spring of 2008 to release an album. The two following years saw them touring in Great Britain and the US, but it didn’t bring the succes they had hoped for. ‘We had toured Holland a number of times and you start thinking to yourself: is this going anywhere? It’s a small country. The three of us made a deal when we started working on our latest album Currents. We agreed that we would go for it one more time and put in everything we had. And if we failed, we would quit,’ says Sjamsoedin. SINGULARLY UNIQUE Currents was released at the end of 2011 and NBTD played a great show at the Groningen’s Eurosonic Noorderslag festival in January, where they met up once again with booking agent Ben Shprits from Entourage Talent in New York. Shprits had set up previous tours for the band and Jori Collignon’s other band C-Mon & Kypski. ‘Nobody Beats The Drum blew me away as soon as I saw their videos online,’ says Shprits. ‘The creativity they bring to the table in the realms of both audio and video was apparent upon my initial review. ‘The Drum’ and ‘Quit Your Job’ showcased their ability to create both fantasy and artsy music videos respectively, while ‘Purple Cactus’ brought their bombastic live show and fun personalities into focus. The kicker was ‘Grindin’’, which had half a million views on YouTube at the time and great buzz for its technically complex but beautiful, multi-colored shifting blocks. In my opinion, Nobody Beats The Drum is one of the most exciting and singularly unique artists on the rise in dance music today.’ Within a month after the Groningen show, Shprits moved to AM Only and the only act on his roster he took with him was Nobody Beats The Drum. It was an important moment for both parties. ‘As we are sort of Ben’s pet project, he’s done really well in getting us a spot at some great festivals,’ says Collignon. ‘And it’s pretty special that we got the opportunity to build a second 333” set-up there and take this show on the road in the States right away,’ says Van der Zwaag. It’s Van der Zwaag’s visuals that make NBTD’s show extra special. ‘We feel it gives us an advantage over other DJs.

We can bring the whole package. Music, visuals and party,’ says Collignon. On top of that, just being from Amsterdam also makes for good conversation. Sjamsoedin: ‘The European sound is hot and the Dutch guys especially are doing so much good stuff at the moment. So thanks a lot, Tiësto!’ THE NEXT GOAL Th highlight so far was a gig at the Sasquatch Music Festival in Washington state. ‘People in the audience were screaming our names even before the show had started, when we were still thinking no-one had ever heard of us! The vibe was incredible, the line-up was big and the place itself had a really special feeling too.’ The guys at the booking agency thought it was pretty special too, apparently. ‘It was our first big American festival show. They kept telling us it was a breakthrough moment.’ A month later NBTD shared a bill with Skrillex, Zedd and Major Lazer at Festival d’Été de Québec in Canada, ‘the biggest crowd we ever played for.’ With EDM making it big in the States, it’s a matter of being at the right place at the right time. ‘A lot of more rock oriented festivals started booking dance acts for the first time this year. And I think we have the advantage of being a cross between a live band and a dance act.’ It’s been a crazy year. ‘You have to adjust your goals all the time, because new opportunities and chances are coming your way every day. People know who we are now, also thanks to our videos, but we don’t even have a record out in America. The next goal is finding a great label, releasing a new hit record and doing lots of remixes.’ And with a great team working for them in the States, the pressure is on. ‘We’ve seen so many dance acts this year and obviously that will have an effect on our way of thinking about music. But the most important thing is to stay focused and keep making the stuff we like.’ Nobody Beats The Drum 333”, 18 October 20:30 at Melkweg. Tickets € 12. Masterclass with NBTD @ ADE Next, 20 October at Felix Meritis. Tickets € 15 nobodybeatsthedrum.com

Skip&Die is made-up of South Africa-born, Amsterdam-based frontwoman Cata.Pirata and Dutch musician/producer Jori Collignon, who also plays in C-Mon & Kypski and Nobody Beats The Drum. On stage, Skip&Die is a five-piece band. Their debut album Riots in the Jungle has just been released. It’s two in the morning. An enclosure of abandoned flats to the left and right of me. Shattered windows and trash on the sidewalk. I’m driving fast. There are heavy concrete blocks on both sides of the street, I can’t get out. I’m in the middle of Johannesburg, enveloped by complete darkness and there’s no one to be seen except for the blonde asleep in the passenger seat next to me. There’s no way I’m going to stop at the red light. I have no idea where I am but by the look of things, this must be Hillbrow, the notorious neighborhood Louis Theroux deemed a nightmare of rough gangs and violence. I hope I can tell her I know where we are when she wakes up. We are in South Africa to meet musicians, work on music together and lay down the foundation for an album. It’s late 2009 and we’ve never played a show, but what we do have is a name: Skip&Die. You skip this liedjie, you die. Verstaan jy, my bru? Yebo boss. Right. Lekka. Now that we’ve all got that clear in our koppies, who’s in charge of the padkos?

Headbanging Every morning we drive out to meet an artist for a new collaborative musical adventure. Behind us lie banana trees swaying in the wind, on our horizon structures of crushed tin cans house the ambitions and hidden qualities of its inhabitants. The people we meet each have different cultural backgrounds and diverse musical inclinations to us and each other. Electro producers, kwaito rappers, marimba bands, soundscape artists. Zulu, Xhosa, Afrikaans, English, Portuguese. It’s all in the mix. Earlier this morning in Soweto we wrote a song with a hardrock band called Ree-Burth. They set up their gear and played a show for us outside in the street. It was quite an unusual sight: the tattoos and piercings, heavy drums and guitars, a jumping and belting frontman, all set between tiny houses and shacks on a dusty street. Women hanging out their laundry came to listen. Little kids passing by in school-uniforms couldn’t resist joining in with the headbanging antics. Everybody seemed to know each other, there was a joy in people’s eyes. The place felt alive. Safety belt It’s not easy to be a rock band in Soweto. You get accused of worshipping the devil. You might think: ‘well yes, any decent rock band should worship the devil’. But in this religious neighborhood, where people need to stick together and take care of each other just to survive, being a devilworshipper won’t make you many friends. It’s not easy being even an ordinary person in Soweto. One member of Ree-Burth tells us about his father who got shot during a dispute. He shows us the bulletholes in the livingroom wall of his family’s apartment. They know who did it, but they’ve let sleeping dogs lie. We are taken on a drive around their area. ‘Jori, my man, why are you wearing your safety belt?’, asks Smokey, the bass player. We just bought a bag of weed, smoked a joint and I’m holding a beer in my left hand while I’m driving. ‘Come on man,’ he says. ‘Take it off, you look ridiculous.’ Danger, apparently, comes from different angles here. Mary Jane Other days we find ourselves in entirely different parts of town, involving lush African gardens, poolside sunsets, fully-equipped recording studios and rooftop braais. Needless to say, the high walls around these private paradises contrast immensely with life outside on the streets and in the townships. If there’s one thing you can’t escape from in South Africa during election time, it’s political propaganda. It is hard to miss all the commotion. Posters of political candidates are stuck all around the country, deep in the jungle and all across the wild coast. No running water or electricity? No need to worry my friend, Jacob Zuma’s face on a poster is here to suffer with you. Perhaps the copious amounts of homegrown Mary Jane from the motherland could be assigned some credit, but truth be told, the power of creation with another artist really

Zulu, xhosa, Afrikaans, English, Portuguese. It’s all in the mix. builds bridges. One’s own personal sonic boundaries are broadened. Like osmosis, at the point the music takes over, the individualistic thoughts of where you’re from, your demons and anxieties are cast aside, and for that fleeting moment in time transformed into a more unified experience. Each song that results out of our artistic collaborations reflects the alchemy and interplay between ourselves and our co-creators. All fluently knit into sound-bytes that resonate amongst us. The magic-wand of the mic capturing the synergy. The tracks we go out here to create reveal a nomadic saga, inter-cutting multiple layers of each artists’ story and the allegories within and around our own memories. To say that it’s a hectic period would be an understatement. Some mornings, after jam-sessions that last until sunrise, all we can do is utter sweet nothings to each other, you know, the basic smalltalk and expected confusion for two exhausted musicians. ‘Uhm, Cata, there’s a hair on your kudu’. ‘What, you don’t know how to peel a pawpaw?!’ Two-and-a-half years have passed, and we’re writing this thing in our studio in the clouds, while the album is finally about to hit stores. We’ve evolved, from what once was a two-piece fantasy with nothing more than a name, into a full-fledged crazy rhythm beast of a band ready to take over stages. We skip and die, from one extreme to the next, each journey teeming with paradox. That’s life. That’s Africa. It doesn’t adhere to any rules. The trick is to keep your yin and yang in balance with the beat. And don’t forget to skip and die, muthafukkas. Skip & Die, 17 October, 20.30 at Paradiso. Tickets € 7. skipndie.com

essential album TEXT JOB DE WIT TEXT interview SANDER KERKHOF image ALEXANDRA WAESPI

THE XX COEXIST YOUNG TURKS When The xx’ debutalbum came out three years ago, it was released to a largely unsuspecting public. There had been a few gigs, a couple of singles, to not much hype. Unusual for what is essentially a pop band, it takes a while for the group’s songs to sink in, preferably while listening to them alone, at night. xx went on to sell over a million copies worldwide, making Coexist a highly anticipated record, quite unlike its predecessor. Too much eagerness, however, doesn’t help when trying to appreciate such quiet, understated, emotionally charged music. Their surprise mega succes have not turned The xx into an attention grabbing, big festival crowd-pleasing band chasing mainstream radio acceptance. If anything, Coexist sounds even more intimate and insulated from the outside world, while retaining, and strengthening the band’s emotional delivery. Even at (around) twenty years old, singers Romy Madley Croft (guitar), Oliver Sim (bass) and producer/programmer/percussionist Jamie Smith had crafted a stand-out sound. (Fourth member Baria Qureshi was forced out of the band a few months after their debut album’s release.) A few years on, and they’ve refined it even further. Coexist – clever wording – is an album about relations and loneliness, distance and desire, some of it probably inspired by young people spending a lot of time far away

from their loved ones. Its sweetest moment is its opening song and first single, ‘Angels’, with Madley Croft sounding like she’s singing right in your ear, ‘being as in love with you as I am’. The sparse sound of The xx leaves room for musical surprises, in almost every song. The alarm-like synth motif at the start of ‘Try’, ‘Chained’’s nocturnal synth moods, the introduction of a stiff techno beat in ‘Swept Away’, the sudden rumble of beats in ‘Angels’, like a distant thunderstorm. When Sims has finished singing the unusually emotive ‘Missing’, Madley Croft’s clear guitar dissolves in the sound of a flat line at a heart monitor. No other band sound like The xx, they are at once radically modern and seperate from the hectic culture surrounding them, and us. Coexist has less hooks than xx did, in that respect it is a second album that will likely appeal primarily to the band’s existing, substantive fanbase, who have learned, and appreciated, to take their time with these songs. Producer Jamie ‘xx’ Smith, in the last couple of years, has enjoyed succes as a remixer, solo artist and DJ, and some of that has found its way into the sound of his band, but not so much for The xx to enter a radical new phase here. Their stunning new live show (I was lucky to catch The xx at Lowlands in Holland) is more experimental, going full-on house for a moment during ‘Sunset’, and even better than the studio version.

148 the xx

The worldwide succes of their debut album xx (2009) and two years of live experience have of course influenced the London trio’s work on Coexist. ‘We were very aware that we would be playing live a lot again,’ says singer/guitarist Romy Madley Croft. ‘For instance a song like ‘Swept Away’ works great at a festival.’ The penultimate song on the Coexist is indeed the most house-oriented song on the album, and has already proved its worth at festivals like Primavera and Lowlands. This development to slightly more uptempo material did not happen overnight. During the last tour the band layered the songs of the first album more and more with Jamie Smith’s beats. Singer/bassist Oliver Sim: ‘You play the same song everyday. To keep it fresh the songs did start to morph. But mostly it was a reflection of what we were listening to.’ The influence of third member Jamie Smith’s producing and DJ’ing has not gone unnoticed. ‘Jamie is impressively upto-date’, says Sim. ‘In London, the dance music scene is just for ever evolving. I find it really hard to keep up. Dubstep came from 2-step and garage and then it became really housey and now it’s edging towards really dark techno. Jamie is our window into what is going on.’ Madley Croft: ‘We definitely share a taste in this kind of music. A good example is our blog where we post stuff we like. I love house music and disco as well.’ Madley Croft has also started DJ’ing. ‘More as a kind of fun thing,’ she says. ‘Not the superstar DJ that Jamie is. I love making mix CDs and the idea of playing songs for people in a certain order. I definitely started listening to music in a different way. Thinking about the way songs mix into each other and the progression of the set. We think about that more and more. And we were still working out the running order of Coexist until the last moment.’ Sim: ‘The mood of the first album was a bit more consistent. On this one there are more ups and downs. It has the darkest and lightest songs we have ever written.’ Where xx had a strong sense of positive longing, yearning for love, Coexist has more doubt. The darkest case in point being ‘Missing’. ‘My heart is beating in a different way’, sings Oliver, his voice nearly breaking. ‘It was the first song we wrote for this album,’ he says. ‘It was a bit of a breakthrough for me. I wrote it on tour. I was feeling a bit dark and desperate.’ Sim describes the recording of the song as quite a traumatic experience. Madley Croft: ‘The recording was really interesting and emotional. You can hear Oliver is really pushing himself. I think we have both grown as singers.’ A lot has changed since they started work on the first album at the tender age of fifteen. Oliver: ‘What did I know, really? It was definitely writing a lot from expectations and observations. I’m 23 now, a grownup.’ And while writing the first album took several years, both singers sending each others little bits of text by chat. Sim: ‘About halfway through the new album we started writing together in a room and it went really well. We wrote ‘Chained’, ‘Unfold’, ‘Our Song’ and ‘Tides’ in half an hour each. It was really cool. It definitely changed the way that we will write in the future.’

No, it’s not a soundtrack. Yet Noir, the fifth album from the Hamburg-based techno producer Steve Bug, has everything to do with cinema. And especially with the aesthetics of the old black-and-white films, the big contrasts and the sinister atmosphere of 20th century film noir.

STEVE BUG NOIR POKERFLAT

Titles like the ‘The Spiral Staircase’, ‘The Seventh Victim’ and ‘Somewhere in the Night’ directly refer to the films bearing the same names. It almost makes for a concept album, but thankfully, no. Nevertheless, Noir isn’t going to set dancefloors on fire, even though pulsating, Detroitinfused opening track ‘Tell Me Why’ shows every intention. Most of Noir is music for the mind, preferably listened to on a decent set of headphones. Only then will you hear the subtle ways in which Stefan Brügesch weaves his warm basslines, melodies and percussion. Noir’s retro feel mainly comes from the fact that it was pretty much totally made with machines. It brings the old sounds of Chicago and Detroit to mind, which is fair enough for someone who has been making dance music for over twenty years. Noir’s soul may be black, but there’s enough light shining through its grooves. RENÉ PASSET

***** Once Anstam was plural, but these days Lars Stöwe is on his own. After a couple of fine breakbeat and dubstep influenced EPs, the Berliner has released two albums within a year’s time. Either there was a plug in the pipeline or Anstam has been on a ridiculously creative streak since signing with Modeselektor’s 50 Weapons label.

ANSTAM STONES & WOODS 50 WEAPONS

*****

Probably the latter, because after the rather underrated Dispel Dances (2011), Stones & Woods is another dark, bold adventure. More so than in the past, Anstam combines analogue tones with synthesized sounds as he jumps across dubstep, avantgarde and electronica with a sardonic grin. Every track is its own microcosmos. ‘Morning Shiver’ combines the repetitive, hypnotic patterns of Steve Reich with the sinister futurism of Shackleton. Next up, Anstam ties PiL’s ‘Flowers of Romance’ beat to some trance chords in an turbulent nightmare called ‘Hopes Soliloguy’ like there’s nothing to it. Stones & Woods’ beats rarely follows a straight path. There is always an oblique angle or a sloping roof where everything threatens to fall off. Polishing up and ironing out is not Anstam’s style. The hectic is allowed space, and the album never feels crammed. RENÉ PASSET

‘I feel like there’s more stuff for the club in this one than the last one,’ Flying Lotus recently told Complex magazine. You’ve got to wonder what clubs he frequents. Even the most uptempo and danceable songs here have a dreamy off-kilter vibe that would throw off most DJs. There’s a few minutes of rhythmic handclaps and high-pitched voices that resemble, say, Hudson Mohawke, and around halfway through there’s a bit of deranged funk that sounds like Parliament jamming in the studio, drunk.

FLYING LOTUS UNTIL THE QUIET COMES WARP

*****

Most of FlyLo’s new album continues where Cosmogramma (2010) left off, however. Save for some grimey synthesizers, the LA native still seems much more interested in the organic and sultry atmosphere of his previous record, than the instrumental hip-hop he started out with. Using mainly bells, piano, guitar and soulful electric piano, he creates a kind of jazz-fusion that sounds like Weather Report updated for the 2010s. Vocals, instruments and percussion blend in and out of the mix, and where one tracks ends and the next begins seems irrelevant. It’s all part of a dreamy, psychedelic mess. What it lacks is the ‘holy shit!’ surprise element that made Cosmogramma so special. But with 45 minutes of beautiful new music, who can complain? JACCO HUPKENS

These last few years, The Gaslamp Killer has been a welcome sight at many festivals and clubs. The LA DJ has one of the most exciting stage performances around. But can you name one Gaslamp Killer hit? A song that everybody knows?

THE GASLAMP KILLER BREAKTHROUGH BRAINFEEDER

*****

No, The Gaslamp Killer is not a production wizard. So it appears on his debut album as well, where he gets help on 12 out of 17 tracks. Big names in the scene like Daedelus, Dimlite and of course Gonjasufi, whose debut album was co-produced by Gaslamp, all contribute. Some collaborations turn out well, like ‘Dead Vets’, where Adrian Younge’s warm, soulful organ matches GLK’s beats. ‘Peasants, Cripples & Retards’, with Samiyam, is a highlight. It’s a real instrumental hip-hop earwig with lovely space bleeps, a song you immediately return to. Most of the time, however, Breakthrough doesn’t get this memorable. ‘Keep it Simple Stupid’, with Shigeto, may be simple, but it’s hardly a track, more a sketch, and ‘Critic’ just keeps on fizzling. GLK’s five solo tracks are all interludes and hardly add anything. This album isn’t much of a breakthrough. You put it on once, maybe twice. The Gaslamp Killer had better just play clubs instead of producing. He is way better at it. MARCO MUHRING

cd reviews

When Hercules & Love Affair sang how ‘my house is in order’, they were evoking a nostalgic, early ’90s proper house feel. On his third album, German producer Alexander Rhida AKA Boys Noize has Snoop Dogg re-do that classic ‘Girl, I’ll house you’ line, and it sounds like a cheap attempt to break into that lucrative American EDM market. You only have to imagine the drunk frat boys high-fiving Big Snoop on a dance record, faintly echoing Todd Terry’s inspired 1988 Jungle Brothers hook-up. It’s truly terrible.

BOYS NOIZE OUT OF THE BLACK BOYSNOIZE

Thankfully, the eleven preceding tracks are a lot better. Rhida’s still a great producer who knows his way with cut-up organ samples (‘Missile’), funky synth-pop basslines (‘Ich R U’) and grimey, dubby hip-hop (‘Circus Full of Clowns’). His music breaks down and soars when it needs to, and thanks to his attention to detail there’s hardly a single boring moment. If you find yourself yearning for 2007, when Digitalism and Justice were king, pick up this record. Out of the Black doesn’t sound that derivative, except really for Daft Punk soundalike ‘Touch it’. JACCO HUPKENS

***** Hold on, didn’t Erol Alkan just release a mix album? Yes, he did, only a few weeks ago. But who’s complaining when another arrives – even if it’s just a month later – when he piles on the of-the-moment techno like he does on I Techno 2012? The official compilation to november’s mega rave in Ghent also serves as a future reminder of where high-octane dance music was at this year.

EROL ALKAN I LOVE TECHNO 2012 LEKTROLUV

*****

Erol Alkan’s other recent mix album, A “Bugged Out” Mix & “Bugged in” Selection, was a two-disc affair spanning both decades and genres and is frankly incomparable to I Techno 2012, which reflects its title pretty well. Over three quarters of Alkan’s selection is made up of records that were released this year, jumping in with Alkan’s and Boys Noise’ excitable ‘Brain Storm’ to get the party going right from the start. The pace doesn’t let up. An early highlight is Alkan’s own crazy acid disco edit of Para One featuring Surkin’s ‘Compute’. Onwards it goes, twenty tracks of dirty, hypnotic, machine music long. From Blawan’s crucial ‘6 to 6 Lick’ to Gesaffelstein’s shrieking ‘Control Movement’, if this doesn’t get you in the raving spirit it’s hard to know what will. JOB DE WIT

Testlab TEXT Hans Verhaag

BKE Beat Thang The Beat Thang – ‘by Dallas Austin’ – was one of the more eye-catching products I saw at Frankfurt’s Musikmesse earlier this year. Since I only got to play with it for a short while at the time, I was happy to test it more throughly. First of all: the Beat Thang is a heavily armoured piece of sampler/sequencer, built out of sturdy metal and rubber that reminds you of a particularly fine piece of Deutsche Gründlichkeit. Which it isn’t, it rolls straight off America’s conveyor-belt AKA China. It’s a physically impressive machine nonetheless, a machine apparently built to outlast its only true competitor, Akai’s MPC500. Central to the Beat Thang are the cool blue backlit LCD screen, next to a chromatic octave and sixteen layered, touch-sensitive rubber triggerpads. You’ll find nine track selectors, effect switches for reverb, phaser, delay et cetera, two nicely sized selector pots and the inevitable transport section. All of these controls, with additional buttons primarily for editing and sampling, are also fashionably blue lit (this is adjustable, thankfully), the ‘BLANG’ knob ranging from completely dark to the kind of eye-piercing blue that’s always handy in a dark club. The back of the Beat Thang has a wide variety of connectors: a double USB connector for data communication to and from your computer, as well as an additional USB storage unit. There’s a MIDI in and out, two headphone outputs, one stereo (double mono) master out and a mic/line dual connector input enabling you to sample from virtually any sound source. The Beat Thang can be used in four different, somewhat obvious modes: song, pattern, kit and instrument. All of these have been pre-stuffed with a wide range of presets and patches, to complete patterns and songs, which come in handy when you want to see quickly what the Beat Thang is capable of but any self-respecting producer

would otherwise steer clear. The kit and instrument modes offer what you expect them to: instruments and drum, percussion and SFX kits that you can play on the octave of trigger pads, and combine and mix to form complete compositions in pattern or song mode. The different modes have different possibilities for editing either your individual sounds or for instance the swing and feel on your entire project. Beat Thang’s default sounds have undoubtedly been designed to serve this kind of workflow. The instruments in particular sound kind of oddly overproduced taken on their own (especially when pitched outside the original range), but all the more effective when used in a (preset) pattern. This way you can easily build somewhat professionally sounding tracks that have that peculiar poppy hip-hop sound that this sequencer comes with. The more experienced (or bored) producer will probably be more interested in another complete sampler function, and importing (USB, two SD) their own existing sample-library. Samples can all be edited on-board with functions like auto-chop, effects and ADSR filters. You may be investing a lot of time in something a professional has already done for you, however. BKE has expansion packs that add up to ten of gigs of sounds and patterns, including samples, patterns and kits by Beat Thang’s creator Dallas Austin (producer for Madonna, TLC, Gwen Stefani), amongst others. It’s almost impossible not to find something to your liking. You might want to keep an eye out for the tons of new sounds that are still in the making. If that’s not enough to make the Beat Thang worth your 1000 euros, BKE provides its Beat Thang with a full software version that ensures easy integration in your DAW. We should have known this thang was a bit too complete to review on a single page. beatthang.com

Testlab TEXT Hans Verhaag

Akai SynthStation 49 Anyone who’s ever worked a proper synth app or recording-app, like Nanostudio, will have to admit the iPad’s prowess when it comes to making music. Its main shortcoming, they will also find out, is that the iPad’s screen is a little small for the more complex, expressive or subtle controls for playing music. But now the same people that have brought us the indispensable MPC, Akai Professional, have made the SynthStation 49 controller, overcoming the iPad’s limited dimensions. The SynthStation 49 – if you are familiar with Akai’s products you might call it an MPK – is a four-octave (+1) USB/ MIDI controller with an added docking bay for your iPad. The keys, naturally, are touch sensitive, with nine MPC-like trigger pads next to keyboard wheels for both pitch-bend and modulation. Even though you may have some difficulties making music with Skype or some other program, Akai has chosen not to include the SynthStation software with the controller. You have to buy that through the proper, ever powerful iTunes channels. That sounds a lot worse than it is, as it’s about as expensive as half a pack of cigarettes. It gets you no less than three parallel synths, fifty (!) drum kits, effects, a sequencer and a mixer to top it off. All of these function pleasantly obvious and comfortable manners, while switching between the various interfaces. And even when you’re looking to do some in-depth tweaking of your sound, you won’t be dissatisfied as you can use an arpeggiator, LFO and a handy X/Y editing tool that brings the Kaoss Pad (or similar) to mind. Both controller and hardware derive a lot of their genetics

from Akai’s earlier Miniak, something that’s definitely added to the practical advantages that the SynthStation’s workflow offers. To smoothen the process even more, the controller has some extra controls for navigating through the various synths, presets and octaves. Furthermore, a set of transport controls helps you through the app’s sequencer function, a nice way to easily come up with nice sketches and beats. Your iPad meanwhile has conveniently been stored in a cool pivoting docking bay, conjuring up your sound even while getting charged. Once installed, the SynthStation controller adds a stereo output to your tablet, giving it somewhat of a placebo effect: when used with the hardware, the SynthStation seems to sound better right away. The SynthStation controller, while very limited in size, show the same structural integrity and sturdiness that we’ve come know first the MPC by, and Akai’s MPD/MPK-controllers later on. This means the SynthStation is up for the job, especially with the added expression of the pitch and mod-wheel. This same physical comfort cannot immediately be applied to the software however. You want to keep your fingers lean and aiming confidently when interacting with the iPad’s screen. The SynthStation controller plus software nevertheless make up a complete, affordable, compact and mobile synthesizer. It doesn’t just control many different apps on the iPad, being fully CoreMIDI-supporting. With a USB connector it also functions as a fully-flexed MIDI controller to virtually any instrument of your choice, like your DAW. Cool! akaipro.com/synthstation49
