Established in 1979 as the UK’s first remanufacturer of CV Joints and driveshafts, Birmingham-based Shaftec has seen rapid growth in recent years. With a distributor network of more than 500 outlets across the UK the company is now set on becoming a force in world markets. ReMaTecNews reports on a business driven by high ambitions.

One of Europe’s most active remanufacturers, Germany’s BU Drive, is setting a new course. As a result, the company under Managing Director, Professor Carsten Bucker, has sold off a significant part of its reman activities. The new owner intends to maintain BU Drive’s reman interests.

Late last year, the SS components in the UK scooped the gold category in the international Green Apple awards among 500 entrants from around the world. Behind the accolade is a story of a forward looking business with new ideas. ReMatecNews tells it.

2015 - A year of challenges and opportunities Following a busy autumn/winter for the remanufacturing and associated industries, we will now see how the practical effects will unfold in 2015. One thing seems clear: remanufacturers worldwide are facing another year of challenges, changes and interesting opportunities. As competition in the market toughens, some businesses, particularly small and medium-sized, will close down. At the same time, others will merge with - or be swallowed by - larger players. This seems inevitable as the motor industry’s giants increasingly realise the benefits – and consequently the opportunities - of remanufacturing. Not always, of course, for altruistic reasons – which they cannot be blamed for. Business is business. Across the world, governments, authorities and organisations will support remanufacturing and not just by paying lip-service to the industry’s impeccable green credentials. In consequence, the reman industry’s trade associations, including show organisers, will increasingly play their own roles in promoting the reman message. They will be helped by the fact that clear trends point towards higher activity levels for remanufacturers across the board. This goes for mature markets in the West as well as for Asian markets, primarily China. As remanufacturers are well aware (some to their cost), the motor industry’s rapid technological advances present ongoing challenges. The same is the case with original equipment manufacturers’ reluctance to accept remanufacturers as partners rather than competitors. Accordingly, the “Rightto-Repair” campaigns continue to deserve all the support they can get. It is to be hoped that the emerging, official support for remanufacturing in many countries will help to pave the way. Closer to home, ReMaTecNews is pleased to contribute, in some measure, to the demand for technical knowledge, one of the key pre-conditions for meeting the ever-rising tech-curve in the motor industry. With this edition, therefore, we are introducing a new feature, Tech Pages, where respected remanufacturers and suppliers in the reman community identify technical issues and point towards their solutions. The hope is that such contributions from relevant market players will help to focus on some of the areas upon which successful remanufacturing will depend in the years to come. We hope you will find them useful.

We will continue to support its development employing the full resources of a truly worldwide business.² Welland says that since partnering with WAIglobal, Sovereign has added a number of new products and widened its scope as a provider of OE quality parts for the aftermarket. He added: “Now, with WAIglobal¹s full ownership behind us, the UK operation will have complete access to the support and resources of the world¹s largest supplier of rotating electrics.” Appointments As part of the change, there are promotions for Kevin Sharp who will become sales and marketing director, and Gary Maskrey, who will assume the new role of director of sales. n

Shaftec: Going for growth big time

Founded in 1997 Shaftec currently employs a workforce of 90 people at its new HQ in Birmingham When market competition toughens, businesses usually choose one of two responses: to hunker down and focus on the core business – or embark on rapid expansion. In Birmingham in the UK, Shaftec, is combining the two. While maintaining strong focus on traditional values such as customer care, technical competitiveness and fast response, this 35-year-old supplier of remanufactured and new transmissions and braking parts is also set on a course of fast growth and expansion. This, Shaftec believes, will ensure a place among the world leaders within its field. The ambitions are

big – but so are the commitments behind them. Visible proof can be found at Shaftec’s site in the Hockley district at the centre of Birmingham. Here the company celebrated the new year by finalising its move into a brand new 42,000 sq. ft. factory, Fully equipped with the latest machinery and technology for increased efficiency, the facility includes the installation of an additional production line to increase capacity to support the demand for products. “The move is the culmination of a significant investment plan, which has seen employee numbers increase by 18 per cent and stock

holding by 45 per cent over the past 12 months,” Managing Director Robert Jones told ReMaTecNews. “It will help us further increase our presence in the UK, Europe and, indeed, in world markets. “Moving to bigger, more central premises will allow us to operate with increased efficiency and to bring to fruition some exciting development plans.” Founded in 1979 by Robert Jones’ father, the late Stan Jones, Shaftec is believed to be the UK’s first remanufacturer of CV joints and driveshafts. Originally supplying private label only, Shaftec, in 1995, decided to launch its own brand. Since then

From the beginning of the year Shaftec took possession of its brand, purposebuilt new headquarters

ReMaTecNews | 11

growth has been steady, rather than explosive – a philosophy that fits its approach to business. That, however, is set to change. Over the past 12 months, employee numbers have increased by 18 per cent and stock holding by 45 per cent as Shaftec prepared for the new factory, the largest single event since its foundation. Today the business provides employment for 80 people, has a turnover of close to 9 million pounds and enjoyed turnover growth of 25 per cent in 2014.

“We are more than ready to make our presence felt in the wider European aftermarket” Expanding customer base “The fact that our business is thriving while the wider economy and manufacturing sector are still in recovery is true testament to the hard work put in by our whole team,” Robert Jones says. “Our business is growing, our customer base is expanding and by committing to these premises we’re sending out a clear message that the Shaftec brand is rapidly gaining momentum. We have a strong and cohesive offer and I believe we are more than ready to make our presence felt in the wider European aftermarket. Consquently, we’re now also looking for distributors in new territories

Operations Director Scott Marshall, MD Robert Jones and Tom Curtis, Director – leading Shaftec towards growth Europe-wide. They will, of course, benefit from the fact that we are offering a same day despatch with next day delivery to the majority of Europe.” Shaftec is taking advantage of what it believes is the widest range of driveshafts and CV joints in Europe supported by the highest levels of availability, i.e. around 98%. Other competitive advantages include a transmission catalogue with the most comprehensive range, offering the highest levels of accuracy as well as a two-year, 24,000 mile no quibble warranty. Around 90% of all remanufactured driveshafts are fitted with new CV joints as standard, ensuring optimum performance is achieved during the life of the part. The current range consists of over

6,000 driveshaft references and, in addition to driveshafts and CV Joints comprise Brake Calipers, Steering Racks and Steering pumps, all of which are remanufactured in house. Catalogue is key Asked about the current and future key for the business, Robert Jones is not in doubt. Among other key drivers the catalogue has high priority. He explains: “There is no doubt that cataloguing has to be the most important first place where it can all go wrong. If the part supplied does not fit the vehicle then nothing else matters. The garage will have a vehicle on the ramp until the correct part is supplied, this ties up the ramp, costing both time and money. What makes it more frustrating

Checking quality: Scott Marshall, Robert Jones and Tom Curtis.

ReMaTecNews | 12

is when the mechanic is trying to resolve the problem, the person on the end of the phone has no idea how to solve the problem as there is only one part number listed. This is why we have made significant investment in our cataloguing department - from what was a part-time job for one person to a four-man team. Annual updates have now become daily updates, ensuring the highest levels of accuracy in catalogue data. There are in excess of 20,000 individual lines of data in the current transmission catalogue alone and the number grows each and every day at a significant rate.” Shaftec’s catalogue is available on Tecdoc and where it has Certified Data Supplier status. Officially formed in 1995, Shaftec had traded under a different name when Robert Jones’ father, Stan, created the very first business associated with the Shaftec name, Track Automotive, in 1979. At the time he worked for GKN on the CV joint production line operating the ball track grinding machines. The size of the business at that time can perhaps best be illustrated by the fact that the CV joint catalogue comprised no more than a single A4 sheet of paper. Ever since, Shaftec has seen steady growth and now the

company is preparing for the next significant stage of its development. Knowledge is King “In the real world it is not possible to supply the aftermarket with the right part every time no matter how good the catalogue,” he says. “There are grey imports, cars that have had engine and gearbox changes, cars that have been modified, special edition end of production line vehicles and various other factors that could result in the wrong part being ordered, which does not fit.” “When this does happen Shaftec have the most dedicated technical support team with a combined knowledge of over 50 years. Designated technical support lines ensure that the problem is dealt with as efficiently as possible giving the customer the confidence that the problem is solved even before the correct part arrives. With over 30 years of core stockpiling, components, development and knowledge, we believe that we offer our customers the best service available in the UK – and soon also in Europe. That’s certainly our ambition.” n

Michael Boe: Meritor to BorgWarner After several years as Managing Director of Meritor Europe and Middle East, Danish Born Michael Boe is leaving from one top-job in the European parts industry to another. With effect from January 1st Boe has been appointed Vice President and General Manager Aftermarket for BorgWarner, the global powertrain specialist. The move means that Michael Boe now has overall responsibility for BorgWarners aftermarket operations with a clear brief of creating growth. The job, therefore, goes to a highly experienced executive who, in addition to his reign at Meritor Europe, has worked for German giants Mannesman and Siemens as well as for Delphi. During his 19-year career Boe also spent two years in China/The Pacific Rim. “I’m looking immensely forward to the new challenge where I will be working with both the automotive segment and with commercial vehicle, whereas with Meritor it was all about commercial,” Michael Boe told

ReMaTecNews. “Moreover, my new position is more focused on technology products while Meritor focuses on mechanical products. Globally, there are big opportunities for growth in the aftermarket.” As President and General Manager Michael Boe has responsibility for BorgWarners entire range of aftermarket activities, sales, engineering, marketing - and remanufacturing in which BorgWarner currently offers remanufactured turbochargers. Whether the range of reman products will be extended is too early to say. But from his time with Meritor Boe is certainly familiar with remanufacturing. “Everything involving a lot of waste can be considered for remanufacturing,” he says. “Remanufacturing is very attractive, in part because it’s benefits are much more obvious today and in part because businesses need different price points and, especially, older vehicles require good quality parts at competitive prices.” n

Big R/ReMaTec USA: Playing on a global scene

With 92 exhibitors from 12 countries and visitors from no less than 53 nations, the recent BigR/ReMaTecUSA exhibition served as an illustration of automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing’s rising international interconnection. You don’t have to look far for reasons. Ever increasing technical complexities, the growing power of Far Eastern markets, China in particular, and the

easier transport and communications link that continue to make the world a smaller place, all play a part. The trend is clearly set to continue as remanufacturing continues to innovate, expand and identifying new fields of expertise and new markets. The commitment to do so was another clear signal from the hundreds of reman

specialists who flocked to the exhibition halls in Las Vegas in the first days of November. All were looking for opportunities. Some found them on the spot. Others laid the groundwork for subsequent contracts. And yet others again, found new knowledge that will stand them in good stead in the months and years to come. ReMaTecNews spoke to some of them. n

PSH: First through the door for PSH Good news came early at the recent Big R/ReMaTecUSA exhibition in Las Vegas when a company purchased POS Service Holland’s starter motor/alternator test bench directly from the show floor within the first hour of the opening of the exhibition. “The gentleman said it was exactly what he needed in his operation to test modern computer-controlled alternators and bought it on the spot,” said Nardo Stremmelaar, technical account manager, POS Service Holland BV, Graveland, The Netherlands. The test bench’s procedures take only 20-30 seconds to complete the full testing. “Service is our middle name, and we know what we need to do to earn the customer’s trust and that valued longterm relationship,” said Stremmelaar, an energetic manager who remains committed to servicing and delighting his customers. “Our real business

is providing customers with information, pricing and service…those three elements enable us to develop a long-term valuable working relationship with our customers,” he added. For more than 25 years, POS has been serving customers in Holland and rest of Europe, Africa and China, Spain. Most recently the company debuted in U.S., with its lineup of more than 600 starters and alternators. It also operates administration offices in Belgium and Germany. PSH has its own line of more than 900 different starter motors and alternators which they have developed. This “PSH+” line is fully interchangeable with the original parts from brands like Bosch, Valeo, Hitachi, and others. Cores and core management remain central to the compnay’s mission as it operates a cores division (NL) specializing in used starters motors and alternators. The company also provides equipment focused on the electrical workshop for testing starter motors and alternators. n

CoremanNet: Cutting lead times with CoremanNet Niklas Appel, sales manager at CoremanNet, Karlsruhe, Germany, who gave an educational seminar during the Big R/Rematec exhibition, reported on the progress of the core return business founded in 2001. If users are not managing their cores, “they are leaving money on the table”, said Niklas Appel. Founded in 2001 by Robert Bosch GmbH, CoremanNet was established for the purpose of providing qualified core return solutions for the automotive spare parts market through 13 European locations. Nine years later, the core management service was expanded to serve other customers and manufacturers. In 2012, CoremanNet opened its first U.S. warehouse center in Atlanta, Georgia. It now also operates a center in Shanghai and plans to expand into Brazil and China in the near future. “Our service can reduce lead time from four to

six weeks to two to three weeks,” said Appel. “Adoption of our service has been good so far, and we definitely make the core worries go away.” CoremanNet offers four different return options consulting: reverse logistics (collection and return), identification (technical assessment, physical damage, and core balancing on the customer level), and software (for maximum value and product flow). Appel emphasizes that CoremanNet minimizes financial risks by providing accurate, on-time info, with thorough evaluation of core value levels. “We reduce complexity for core management on all reman products, even with multiple locations. There are synergies of using planned transportation, and truckloads are sent to the remanufacturer as needed.”

Distinctive offerings, according to Appel, include 10 day credit notices for better capital cost

Jamaica: Bringing reman to the Caribbean Despite its many attractions, few would call the Caribbean a thriving market for remanufacturing. That may be about to change - at least if it’s up to Gordon Baldie, a 44-year-old parts distributor based in Montego Bay in Jamaica. Having built a business as a used car dealer and provider of Japanese car parts in Jamaica (population 3.5 million) Baldie now intends to bring remanufacturing to the whole Caribbean area.“As you know, some of the islands have limited potential due to their size,” he told ReMaTecNews. “Nevertheless, the population of the region, including Jamaica, is clearly sufficient to support an interesting remanufacturing sector. All in all, the Caribbean and Latin America comprise 21 countries and most of them have very little knowledge about the benefits of remanufactured products.” Under the trade names Inter Caribbean Automotive Distribution, Nippon Car Parts and Cars to Go, Baldie has built a broad customer base. He is confident that he can expand his business into imports

and distribution of remanufactured products in addition to the existing imports and sees his base in Montego Bay as a prospective logistics hub. “Remanufactured products are not well known in the region,” he says. “You could say that it’s a well-kept secret that’s waiting to be revealed. With the relaxation of trade restrictions between the US and Cuba, there will be more opportunities here, too. A country like the Dominican Republic is yet another untapped market.” New warehouse For the reman initiative, Baldie is leasing new warehouse capacity in Montego Bay for storing both new and remanufactured parts. Following visits to Europe and the US to explore opportunities and link up with partners, he regards the first half of 2015 as a breakthrough for Caribbean remanufacturing. “I have more cores than I can dispose of and other large quantities are available from other parts of the region,” he says. “I guarantee that once car owners in our region realise the quality of remanufactured parts, they will buy them.” n Gordon Baldie: Bringing reman to the Caribbean

Kinergo: Lithuanian specialist with ambitions “We have supplied clients from Georgia, Kosovo, Italy, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Norway, Bulgaria, Russia, South Africa, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and many others,” says Edgar Nebylitsa from Lithuania’s ambitious transmission and torque converter specialist, Kinergo. Kinergo debuted in the US market at the Vegas exhibition and returned home with a great deal of optimism. “Since we are a relatively young business we realized we would have to compete with huge companies with good names and close relations with their clients,” he said. “Therefore we had to introduce some new ideas and a new approach to the market. In my opinion we have succeeded.” 2014 looks like being a breakthrough year for the company that makes and distributes a range of transmission and torque converter products as well as organizing training courses to workshops

in Lithuania. Edgar Nebylitsa explains: “Firstly we had to develop a new sales department that would satisfy needs of a multinational market and understand different business cultures. A difficult part was organising office hours that would meet the working hours of our clients in all parts of the world from USA to Australia. However, today, our clients can contact us 24 hours a day. Realising the financial restraints on smaller transmission workshops, Kinergo recently developed a “starter equipment set” that requires almost 3 times less investment than is usually the case. “We wanted to enable smaller workshops to start a TC rebuilding business without huge investments. The starter equipment set enables just two employees to rebuild 250 torque converters a month.” At the moment Kinergo is working on several new technologies for 6 speed transmission TC which the company hopes to introduce at ReMaTec 2015 in Netherlands in June. Concurrently, the

company has entered into an alliance with UK based Cottingham Engineering, which supplies Hydratest equipment for automatic transmission valve bodies. Cottingham Engineering is Kinergo’s distributor within the EU, but Nebylitsa says that plans are underway to extend beyond distribution of products. n

New council to support European remanufacturing To be launched in February a new European Remanufacturing Council project will be set up with the aim of strengthening the interests of remanufacturing across the continent. The ERC initiative will be part of a greater project in which will quantify the current size and structure of the European remanufacturing industry in key market sectors, such as the automotive industry. The council will consist of a number of key figures working in industries with current activities or future potential within the field of remanufacturing. “The subscription-based ERC will provide support for remanufacturers from across the manufacturing landscape,” says Dr. Ben Walsh of Oakdene Hollins, the British environmental consultancy that runs the government supporten Centre for Remanufacturing and Reuse in Aylesbury north east of London. “Its aim is to provide a unified voice for remanufacturers to European policy makers. The project’s shape and scope will be defined throughout the project with the aim to launch in 2016.” “Central to the success of the project will be to engage the remanufacturing industry,” he adds. “Remanufacturers participation in relevant parts of the project will ensure that the outcomes are industry focused and provide the best available information. If you would like to be included in the circulation list for information on this project and the ways in which you can get involved, please

contact me at Ben.walsh@remanufacturing.eu Last year Oakdene Hollins as the lead partner, led a successful bid to develop the European remanufacturing industry. Its €1.5 million project under the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 funding will look to engage with remanufacturers from across Europe. The aim of the project, due to start in February, is to grow “this important activity which is a key component of the circular economy and vital to making European industry more resilient to global competition.” International consortium The project team consists of an international consortium of remanufacturing experts including the University of Strathclyde in Scotland, Fraunhofer in Germany, Linköping University in Sweden, VTT Technical Research Centre in Finland, Grenoble INP in France and Delft Technical University and Circle Economy from the Netherlands. “For the past two years, we have argued that the Chinese state, the US Department for Commerce and the South Korean Government have each been investing in their remanufacturing industries – and that Europe was in danger of falling behind,” says Ben Walsh. “This project will provide a springboard to ensure that European remanufacturers remain competitive in the global market, safeguarding European jobs, limiting our exposure to critical raw materials and improving the European trade balance.” Besides quantifying the current size and structure of the European remanufacturing industry, the study will also explore the current social, economic and environmental benefits and the future potential benefits of remanufacturing in Europe. This includes identifying sources of existing market data on remanufacturing in Europe. In the market study, particular focus will be given to remanufacturing activities involving products that contain advanced materials, such as advanced composites and alloys. Policy makers “This will be important if we want European policy makers to take note and encourage the industry” added David Parker, who is leading this work for the project. The project will then map the challenges of remanufacturing including the pros and cons of different business models, product design and processing approaches that include remanufacturing.

David Parker

Ben Walsh Best Practice The project will also explore best practice, including: identifying innovative business cases where the remanufacturing business models have been proved economically and/or environmentally successful; and, identifying innovative product design and remanufacturing process approaches. The aim of this part of the project is to disseminate best practice and encourage more organisations to begin remanufacturing their products. To this end, workshops will focus on business models, design for remanufacturing and remanufacturing processes, particularly in countries with potential for increased remanufacturing activities. The project will have an on-line presence with a website hosting the project reports and tools, as well as on-line learning materials. n

Decoupler Science

by Litens

Are you using the CORRECT alternator pulley? Over 60 million vehicles worldwide are now factory-equipped with a Litens Overrunning Alternator Decoupler (OAD) pulley rather than a conventional solid or one-way clutch pulley. An OAD’s primary function is to reduce the noise, vibration and harshness common with today’s lean engine designs, while improving fuel efficiency and lowering the risk of premature accessory drive component failures. An OAD is similar in appearance to other pulley designs, but its patented internal decoupling system plays a vital role in synchronizing the belt drive system. When replacing an OAD-equipped alternator pulley, the only acceptable choice is another OAD unit. In future issues, we will explore various topics relating to OADs such as: function, benefits, failure diagnosis, replacement rates, etc.

BU Drive’s Karsten Lange goes independent Following the corporate changes at Germany’s BU, Karsten Lange, Managing Director of the company’s Turbocharger Division, and Director, Strategy and Business Development of the BU Group, is leaving to set up a new consultancy business focusing on aftermarket issues. Karsten Lange will, however, maintain close links with the reman market as an adviser to some important players. Moreover, Lange has received expressions of interest from domestic and international OEM and IAM turbo and engine specialists, he says. A well-known face in the automotive, HD and industrial reman, Karsten Lange has, among his other appointments, served as MD for BU Turbo

System since 2000 and played an important role in the growth of the companies of the BU Group alongside majority owner, Professor Carsten Bucker. “The changes at BU Drive have been underway for quite a while so, for me, this is well planned,” Karsten Lange said. “I will continue to work with aftermarket operators as a consultant to a variety of parties. Based on my 14 years in the market, I believe there is plenty of scope for further growth in many areas.” Known as “Karsten Lange Consulting GmbH & Co KG”, the new business will offer advice in areas such as strategy optimisation, reorganisation, networking and staff recruitment. “In particular, I believe there is a need to bring OES and IAM players closer together in order to serve the market in the best way possible,” Lange says. “After all, that’s far

better than competing with each other. I believe that my slogan “people-networks-solutions” represents an accurate description of what the aim is.” n

From one car wreck to an international core business

Green credentials for SS Components: From left: Helen Smith, John Smith, Charlotte Jenkins, Mark Heaps by Steve McQueen In 1970, John Smith bought a non-running car for £5 and was unable to fix it. He realised there was money to be made from old cars when he sold the parts for £25. By the time SS Components was incorporated in 1998, the company had developed into a large core supplier. A brake caliper specialist, its current stock includes more than 350,000, but with over 50,000 starter motors as well as a wide range of power steering pumps (electronic and hydraulic), electronic steering columns and power/ manual steering racks, the company is clearly a first call for core by many remanufacturers. At the end of last year, the company scooped the gold category in the international Green Apple awards, coveted by 500 other entrants from around the world. The award recognises the company’s contribution towards environmental conservation and it is fair to say that the award reflects more than just the role of core supplier. Vehicle recycling, the sale of second-hand engines, second-hand body parts and the distribution of dismantled vehicles in kit-form to developing economies around the world are among the “other” green vehicle-related activities that were recognised. The company estimates that, when considered all together, these activities help to ensure that the UK economy does not need to

produce over 800,000 tonnes of new steel and aluminium - and any of the associated CO2 emissions - each year. Degrees of remanufacturing It could also be argued that some of these “other” activities make important contributions towards different degrees of remanufacturing: “For example, our starter motor business has a European side and a worldwide export side,” says company founder and managing director John Smith. “Take a starter motor for a Fiat Panda. If we supply it to a remanufacturer in Europe, it will come back as a remanufactured starter motor for a Fiat Panda. In countries like Afghanistan and Pakistan, they have different needs so different levels of skills have evolved to match them. An

alternator from a Morris Mini, for instance, might go to Pakistan where it will be modified to fit a tractor. Remanufacturing is taking place, but at a level that’s more appropriate to that market. The reman market is not always about highly remanufactured parts supplied in ‘green’ boxes. Sometimes they just have to work.” Core business The catalyst for the transformation from vehicle dismantler into core supplier followed a visit from the buyers from one particular remanufacturer: “They were buying up excess stock, taking everything for £5. They were throwing lots of it away in order to end up with some parts that they needed. I realised that they would probably be happier to pay more, say £12 per unit, as long

as they could be sure that they were getting what they wanted every time.”

“Our task is to understand what the dismantlers mean, interpret it, then match it to part numbers i.e.” Once fully committed to the role of core supplier, parts were soon being sourced from local dismantlers. The drive to identify better quality core had begun. “I knew it was no good sending out parts that might get rejected. I knew we needed a system to identify and store everything, but I knew nothing about computers, so I brought in people who did.”

Inventory system The result is a bespoke inventory management system that is the envy of a number of major US core suppliers that have seen it in action: “It operates in two languages: the language of the dismantler and the language of the remanufacturer,” says operations manager Mark Heaps. He explains that while dismantlers deal in models, year of manufacture and engine size, remanufacturers deal only in part numbers: “Our task is to understand what the dismantlers mean, interpret it, then match it to part numbers. We can then check these against the individual requirements of all of our different customers,” he says. An in-house team and a network of independent agents buys core nationally and internationally through established contacts. Experience and highly-tuned recognition skills ensure that reception staff can identify most incoming parts, but sometimes more detective work is required.

Rim countries continues to affect the market. Consequently, drive shaft cores is one product to have been dropped from the catalogue, but increasing demand for brake calipers, power steering pumps and rotating electrics means that the overall market for core remains buoyant. As a result of the relocation of many major remanufacturing centres from Central Europe to Eastern Europe, the destination of some core has changed. Meanwhile, changes to economies like Poland and Russia have influenced the market in other ways as the profile and age of their respective vehicle parcs has changed: “Their second-hand parts market still thrives, but remanufacturing in those areas is on the rise too. The parts they want now include Audi, VW and transit vans,” adds John Smith. Those changes could well give rise to fresh markets for core supplied by SS Components - and perhaps new sources of core too. n

The system allows a cast number on the individual components to be used for identification. If it’s already on the system, the cast number can be matched to an existing data sheet, which contains four images of the part. Sometimes, however, it’s an unknown or ‘new’ component. Further investigative work is required. We are on the frontline in many ways. That unknown part might be from a car that’s been sourced recently from an insurance company. If it’s “new” to us, we take four images, from different angles and build a new data sheet. Then we create a part number for it. We then use that data sheet to promote the availability of the “new” part to our customer base.” That customer base is a broad mix of companies. Some small local remanufacturers use SS Components like a superstore. They buy one or two items every day. One Danish customer buys up to 100 pairs of brake Vauxhall Cavaliers three times a year and uses them to make brake system upgrades for VW Beetles.

Code breakers in dismantling

Meanwhile, some of the more heavyweight customers, such as remanufacturers to OE, might buy core in quantities of up to 10,000 pieces at a time. An essential part of the remanufacturing food chain is core management, and the move into it seemed a natural one for SS Components. All core is sent directly to SS to be identified and valued. Core can then be called back to the factory as and when required by the remanufacturer. This offers those customers real time cost savings. Changing markets Every new year adds another series of models to the SS Components catalogue, so its core market continues to grow. However, competition from cheaper imports of ‘new parts’ from the Pacific

A British core supplier is testing a coding system that could help remanufacturers get access to in-demand parts more quickly. Yorkshire-based SS Components says that vehicle dismantlers tend to use different parameters to identify individual components, while the collection and delivery of small amounts of core is not always economic. That situation changes when remanufacturers express an urgent need for a small number of specific parts: “Our aim is to establish a faster method of identification, so that we can locate core held by dismantlers when it’s needed,” says operations manager Mark Heaps. “We are piloting a coding scheme with a handful of vehicle dismantlers. It will help them to understand our needs and hopefully, they will be able to understand ours more easily too.” The pilot programme, which is approaching its first birthday, is delivering good results: “It doesn’t usually make sense to collect small items of core, but the coding system will help us to establish dismantlers that have the items in stock when a remanufacturer is on the lookout for specific parts. We’ve recently been able to source some urgently required steering racks that made one remanufacturer very happy.”

Automatic transmissions prepare to resume growth The brighter signs emerging from the US motor industry have not escaped the notice of the automatic transmission rebuilding/ remanufacturing segment. This is the message from a number of players that ReMaTecNews has recently been in contact with. If the indications prove correct, 2015 could see a considerable upsurge in business for the automatic transmission industry. Several signs were evident at ATRA’s Powertrain Expo at the Rio Hotel and Conference Centre in Las Vegas in early November. Showing a substantial year-on-year increase in exhibitors and visitors, the event revealed a new confidence within the industry. Dennis Madden, ATRA’s Chief Executive summed it up as follows: “This has been the best year since 2007 and clearly exceeds the two most recent shows in Las Vegas in 2012 and 2011. People are in growth mode. “It’s no longer a question of managing decline but about going for growth. We have had an outstanding show. I believe we’re seeing a watershed moment.” From the commercial side of the transmission industry similar views can be heard. “Reman acceptance is up. Customers recognise reman’s quality and the strong warranty,” said Christopher Thomas, Manager, Transmission Portfolio and Advance Propulsion Batteries at GM, Grand Blanc in Michigan. “Our transfer cases, offered now with even broader parts line-up, is hitting the mark with customers,” added Thomas, who called reman a strong, sustainable business. “It’s green, offers customers savings and helps our environment.” Mopar, the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ parts, service and customer care organisation in Auburn Hills. Michigan, strikes a

similar chord. “Providing our Mopar reman lineup of parts is a core strategy in going to market,” said Michael Fisher, Product Line Manager, Mopar Brand. “We are less of a throwaway society, and we are now embracing reman offerings because of their sustainability as well as their great value and quality.” He emphasised that current model reman programmes at Mopar benefit from product enhancements driven from the manufacturing side, and they continue to improve Mopar’s offering of past model reman applications.

“It’s no longer a question of managing decline but about going for growth The trend appears to be reflected at major parts distributors. One example is provided by Autozone, the huge parts supplier that operates 5,400 retail stores across North America, Mexico and Brazil, of which 3,600 handle commercial vehicle component parts. A first time exhibitor at the Powertrain Expo 2014, the Autozone’s experience from the show means that it will return again next year. “Although the market is price driven, the quality of parts and their value is seen by more customers - plus there’s the positive attributes of being green”, noted Jake Mackey, Autozone’s National Account and Business Development Manager.

ATRA’s Powertrain Expo demonstrated the automatic transmission segments renewed confidence.

ATRA CEO Dennis Madden Mackey added that independent service garages today are a major customer target. ZF, the German driveline and chassis giant, which ranks among the world’s three largest parts suppliers, is another major business, which experiences increased interest in its reman range. Based in Vernon Hills, Illinois, ZF’s North American remanufacturing operations are centred on a 400,000 sq. ft. reman and distribution facility just outside central Chicago.“Reman remains a growth business for ZF, and we’re upbeat and growing, especially with our recent acquisition of TRW. Our business has recovered from the economic downturn in 2007, 2008 and 2009 and customers rely on our proven quality and reliability,” says John S. Edwards, Director, Automotive Technology Group, ZF Services, LLC. Transtar Transtar, the transmission and drivetrainrelated solutions supplier, continues to focus on supplying reman components to a wide network of transmission shops. Other markets include general repair facilities, production builders, and international markets. “Our acquisition of ETX, Inc. earlier this year strategically bolstered our reman torque converter portfolio plus it increased our distribution ability to better serve customers,” said Stephanie Cargill, marketing communications manager, Transtar Industries, in Walter Hills, Ohio. A new year has arrived in more than one sense. Perhaps even a prosperous one for the transmission industry. The initial signs, at least, are encouraging. n

Tech Pages in ReMaTecNews In all segments of the motor industry rapid technological advances continue to create challenges as well as opportunities. Automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing are no exceptions. Here, too large and small operators in all parts of the world are increasingly dependent on technical knowledge and developments within their professional sphere. Reflecting the need for staying abreast advances in reman technology, ReMaTecNews is launching a regular series in which specialized remanufacturing companies provide an insight into a variety of technical aspects of their business and share important knowledge. Beginning with this edition, the series will comprise reports from key remanufacturing segments such as engine remanufacturing, electronic control units, cleaning technology, turbocharger remanufacturing and more. The first installment is provided by Melett, the global UK supplier of turbocharger technology.

Today’s automotive repair industry is faced with an overwhelming range of repair parts. Amidst claims of exceptional quality at extraordinarily cheap prices, Ian Warhurst, Owner and Managing Director, Melett Ltd, explores the reasons why some turbocharger parts are offered at such low prices, and what the real cost of low quality parts means to the repair industry as a whole.

The cost of using low quality parts The turbo repair industry is a well-established global market, which goes back to the 60’s, and was predominantly involved in the repair of larger commercial vehicle turbos until the explosion of common rail turbo diesels in the late 1990’s. The more recent influx of passenger car turbos and the downsizing trend to meet emission regulations, have led to a large percentage of vehicles now being fitted with turbos. Increased activity The trends in the turbocharger aftermarket follow the movements of the market for new turbos, albeit some four years after. The turbo aftermarket is now fully involved in the growth the OE turbo industry saw in the early 2000’s, and as a result there is a significant increase in the amount of repairing going on and general activity in the turbo repair industry. As global demand for turbochargers increases, the raw materials used in the manufacture of the components are becoming more expensive. Raw material prices have conventionally been determined by the Global Price Index (GPI), with stockists adding their margin before selling to the mass market. Using a turbocharger turbine wheel as an example, a major part of the cost of the turbine wheel is based upon the current market cost of Nickel - the main component of the Inconel material, plus the manufacturers mark-up. The price of an Inconel wheel will be agreed on a monthly basis, if the GPI increases by 3% for example,

stockists reserve the right to charge more for the raw materials, therefore increasing the global cost for manufacturers. Nickel is a popular element used during the manufacture of many automotive components, and in particular turbine wheels, as it is able to withstand the tough operating conditions and extreme temperatures of a modern turbocharger. Reduced performance In countries where the market is saturated with many new parts suppliers, undercutting margins is now common practice resulting in companies selling low quality products at rock bottom prices. In China, for example, there is a limited supply of nickel, and therefore stockists in that marketplace can sell it at a premium. As a result this should be reflected in the market price of a turbine wheel. However, the way many manufacturers

are producing turbine wheels at a lower cost is to simply use a lower grade of Inconel with less nickel. This will significantly reduce the wheels overall performance and durability, leading to unreliable repairs and premature failure. Historically, low cost manufacturers were only concerned with undercutting each other’s margins. However in today’s environment they are now forced to reduce the quality of the cast materials in order to compete with each other. As a result we are seeing a reduction in quality. High quality repair parts will always hold a premium in comparison to the lower quality alternatives. It is important to understand the point at which cutting margins turns into reducing quality. Every component has a minimal price point and anything lower than that point can only be achieved by using lower grade raw materials in the manufacturing process.

The Melett range allows turbo reconditioning, remanufacturing and repair of turbo models originally manufactured by Garrett, Holset (Cummins Turbo Technologies), Borg Warner (Schwitzer & 3K), MHI (Mitsubishi), Komatsu, Toyota, IHI & Hitachi.

“It is important to understand the point at which cutting margins turns into reducing quality” The repair industry as a whole is experiencing an influx of new low cost, low quality part suppliers into the market. In many cases the components look very similar to their higher quality counterparts. However, component failure within days of operation is common as these poor quality products cannot perform efficiently under the extreme operating conditions. Premature failure Premature turbocharger failure is a common problem associated with the use of lower quality repair parts, which in turn can lead to an increase in warranty returns and loss of customer confidence in repairs. It is important that the automotive repair market as a whole considers the real cost of using low quality repair parts, not only to their own business reputations but to the reputation of the entire industry. n Ian Warhurst, Melett’s owner

New Remanufacturing Flyer

APRA has been representing the business interests of the remanufacturing industry since 1941 and is continuously looking for new ways to support you in your daily challenge to further develop the remanufacturing business. Together with CLEPA and FIRM, APRA has now published a new flyer for the remanufacturing business in Europe. The flyer contains information about the ecological as well as social and ethical advantages of remanufactured parts, including the definition of a core and a reman part. These definitions are

supported by all relevant European automotive associations, which is a milestone for our industry. The printed flyer can be ordered via APRA or you can download a digital version by clicking the following link:http://www.apra-europe.org/ dateien/News/News2014/Reman_Flyer_Web.pdf To increase awareness and understanding of our business, please distribute the content of the flyer actively and use it in your communication as much as possible. We would very much appreciate if you could also create an active link to the flyer on your individual company website. n

How sustainable reman is The Technical University of Berlin evaluated how sustainable your remanufacturing activity is. Industrial production is always embedded in global value creation networks. It is inseparably connected with economic, environmental, and social paradigms. Within the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 1026 “Sustainable Manufacturing – Shaping Global Value Creation”, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), 50 experts develop manufacturing solutions for tomorrow.

APRA & EU Commission

2050

APRA Europe participated in “Technical Working Group” – of the EU Commission on the 20.21.10.2014 Brussels, Belgium. APRA was invited to attend the kick-off meeting of the European Commission - Technical Working Group – that relates to Best Environmental Management Practice in the Car Manufacturing Sector. This invitation shows that the EU is more and more aware of the importance of remanufacturing. It’s the fruit of APRA’s ongoing

2012

efforts to be active in lobby work by giving politicians first-hand advice on the importance of remanufacturing in today’s life. This participation had the benefit that we were able to demonstrate remanufacturing in official documents and projects of the EU. The result was that remanufacturing will not be forgotten. This awareness and involvement shows another benefit of being / becoming an APRA member.

The CRC’s ultimate goal is to generate prosperity for more people worldwide while reducing the overall consumption of resources. The researchers combine engineering, environmental and social sciences to create a holistic approach to modern manufacturing. Our remanufacturing industry can exemplarily adapt these new approaches to improve economic, environmental and social impacts of your activities.

Looking towards broader horizons

FIRM President Clemens Ortgies with John Rickoff, President of AERA A broader international interface, closer ties with other engine reman associations, worldwide and stronger relations with governing bodies and political decisionmakers. These are some of the priorities on the agenda of Clemens Ortgies, the newly elected president of FIRM, the European Federation of Engine Rebuilders and Remanufacturers. Other focal points include further work on a quality standard for reman products in the automotive industry and regular consultations with the US associations, MERA (Manufacturer and Equipment Remanufacturers Association), PERA and AERA, the Automotive Engine Builders Association. Technical information “One aim is to arrange meetings during shows like ReMaTec, Big-R-Show and AAPEX,” Clemens Ortgies says. “AERA in the US is considering exchanging technical information and Brazil’s CONAREM is interested in obtaining technical assistance with new technologies in the field of engine remanufacturing. As a result, FIRM will help organise visits for future CONAREM delegations

visiting Europe.” FIRM represents the interests of the independent engine remanufacturers and rebuilders in Europe. Its membership comprises around ten national trade associations with more than 500 engine remanufacturers and rebuilders. Based near Brussels, FIRM is a recognised discussion partner of the European institutions, fellow associations across the world and other international and European trade federations of the automotive sector. Active player Elected in September 2014 as the successor to Philippe Maertens of Belgium, 55-year-old Ortgies has, in recent years, been an active player on the international remanufacturing scene and sought-after lecturer at conferences and seminars. Currently head of BU Drive’s engine activities in Lingen, Germany, Clemens Ortgies is a mechanical engineer (Dipl.-Ing. TU) and has 30 years’ experience with application, manufacturing and remanufacturing of engines. He sees stronger, international partnerships between the world’s reman organisations as crucial to the future of engine remanufacturing.

“As advancing engine technologies place ever increasing demands on engine remanufacturers, there is a clear need for reman specialists to work together for exchange of experiences and methods,” Clemens Ortgies says. “There is little doubt that engine remanufacturing is going to become even more significant in a number of areas – and not only for cars and trucks but also for off-road applications, agricultural machinery, energy and marine to mention some examples.” “Different parts of the world have different knowledge and experience from different segments,” he says. “We can, for instance, help each other by organising visits by specialist teams to advise on technical issues of mutual interest. n

ReMaTec2015 earns Certified Trade Fair status from US government ReMaTec2015 has been selected to participate in the Trade Fair Certification Program (TFC) under the U.S. Department of Commerce. The program is intended to help non-US companies participate in overseas trade shows with US exhibitors and to facilitate links between them and existing and potential US partners. US exhibitors. According to the Department “ReMaTec2015 represents a high-quality, multi-facetted opportunity for American companies to market themselves and their products and services overseas. ReMaTec2015 will be held at the RAI Convention Centre on June 14-16 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. In addition to the ReMaTec show, the RAI centre will also host other high level remanufacturing events under the umbrella name Amsterdam International Remanufacturing Week 2015. The 2015 ReMaTec Trade Fair Certification Program will target buyers from Germany, France,

Middle East and Latin America. The selection is based on the Department of Trade’s outreach and show management research. Under TFC, the U.S. government assists show promotion through its embassies and consulates and invites official trade delegations to attend. TFC also provides exhibitors with hands-on guidance such as export counselling, market analysis and matchmaking services. As part of the TFC program, ReMaTec2015 will host an American Breakfast together with DOC in order to bring together the show’s US exhibitors and the invited, international trade delegations. “Although ReMaTec already attracts a world-wide audience, the involvement of the US Department of Trade means that we’re able to reach even more visitors,” said ReMaTec2015 Show Manager Niels Klarenbeek, Amsterdam RAI. “This is a very positive development because it demonstrates what our exhibitors and the industry really have

The Iraqi delegation at ReMaTec2013 to offer.” “In attracting official trade delegations, our co-operation with the US Commercial Service has proved successful in 2011 and 2013. Greater global participation adds value to the show - not just to our US clients but to everyone involved. We’re proud of the DoC recognition, indeed,” Niels Klarenbeek added. n

Exploring Amsterdam’s canals One of the most popular “extra-curricular” events during the last ReMaTec show in 2013 was the canal cruise organised by Amsterdam RAI for the shows visitors and exhibitors. On a sunny evening, more than one hundred participants took in the charming canalside views of Amsterdam while enjoying some delicious refreshments. Guests, who participated last time as well as new participants will be pleased to hear that this popular event will be repeated during the forthcoming ReMaTec2015. Scheduled for

Saturday 13 June 2015, further details will be given closer to the time. Once these have been

announced, participants are advised to sign up as early as possible to avoid disappointment. n

Innovative Products & Services section for ReMaTec2015 Exhibitors who plan to launch a new product or service at ReMaTec2015 are requested to contact the show’s management team. ReMaTec2015 plans to create a designated area on the show floor where the latest innovations within

remanufacturing will be showcased. The decision follows surveys that reveal that visitors appreciate opportunities to get an insight into the latest trends & technologies. As a result – and in order offer additional promotional opportunities

for exhibitors – a new “Innovation Alley” will be established in a prominent position on the showfloor. Interested exhibitors parties should contact Niels Klarenbeek: n.klarenbeek@rai.nl n
