Welcome to the first international GreenTech Summit Thank you delegates for your involvement, support and participation in this inspiring and interactive event. Issues related to the future of green horticulture will be debated and discussed in an open forum. Your input is encouraged and we welcome your personal feedback throughout the conference. We hope that the conference will inspire confidence in, and commitment to, the future of green horticulture; a stronger collaboration between the multiple parties involved in this industry; that new ideas arise through debate; and to establish solid action points that will contribute to your daily successes. The extensive programme will be delivered by an exciting line-up of industry speakers, and will also include a networking reception as social event providing an opportunity for invaluable interaction and networking, as well as sightseeing on Amsterdam’s enchanting canals. This guide provides you with information we trust you will find useful as you prepare for the event and a visit to the Netherlands. We encourage you to explore all the Netherlands has to offer this second week of June. Next to the Summit there are several different horticultural events to join, like the Vegetables Tour and the Flower Trials. Medical doctor, Astronaut and Ambassador of planet Earth During his space journeys, André’s favourite seat was near one of the windows to enjoy the spectacular view of earth. He saw a world without borders with deserts, forests, the most beautiful islands and immense oceans. A blue paradise in the vast, black universe. But he also saw a fragile and vulnerable planet protected by a very thin atmosphere without which life is impossible. He saw deforestation, air pollution in major cities and a web of lights at night as a reminder of a rapidly growing world population. Ian holds a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering and an honours degree in Technology Management (University of Pretoria, South Africa). He forms part of a team of engineering specialists in ZZ2 responsible for technical and managerial support in the production, post-harvest handling and marketing of ZZ2’s tomatoes, onions and avocados. An expert in retailing plants he acutely focussed on the end customer and creates innovative solutions aimed at making gardening easier. Faris Farrag, an Egyptian national, studied Economics at the University of Southern California and worked as an investment banker for Morgan Stanley and the National Bank of Kuwait until the early 2000’s. Since 2011 he has started Bustan Aquaponics, the largest fully integrated commercial aquaponics system in Africa. Bustan Aquaponics contributes to food security and water & energy conservation in the arid regions of Egypt. Prof. (Emeritus) Erik Holm is a director and systems consultant to the ZZ2 farming conglomerate in South Africa following a career as Head of the Entomology Department at the University of Pretoria. His interest is the application of ecological principles in the structure and strategy of agribusinesses. He is the author of 12 books and more than 100 academic articles and is well known in South Africa for his contributions through radio, television and journals. Drs. ing. Robert Kielstra holds a Bachalor degree in Agriculture and a master degree in Business Development. After his master’s degree he started working as a project manager at Agriport A7 (project development organisation for a greenhouse and agribusiness site). Currently he is the director of ECW. ECW owns and operates customized grids and networks of electricity, natural gas, geothermal heat, optical fiber and water at Agriport A7. All of the infrastructure and ECW customers are linked and managed by the EWEB platform through which energy flows are controlled and optimized. After years of training in Houston, Moscow, Cologne, Montreal and Tokyo, a Russian Soyuz spaceship launched André in December 2011. Two days later he arrived at the International Space Station to live and work for six months. On board he was not only a medical doctor, scientist and flight engineer, but also handyman and ambassador for several charities. Keynote – Forum – 09:30 hours Erik Pekkeriet (born in 1970) is working as a senior project manager in industrial production systems, vision and robotics in horticulture at Wageningen UR. He completed his BSc in Mechanical Engineering at Emmen, in 1994. He started his career at Philips as a project employee in maintenance management and after a few years he continued as a consultant in innovation management in Greenhouse Horticulture. Bill Watts, BA MSc CEng FCIBSE, is Technology Manager and Board Member of The Sahara Forest Project and Senior Partner in Max Fordham llp. He studied zoology at Oxford and Stirling Universities before joining Max Fordham llp in 1980 to be a Consulting building services engineer. Mr. Watts has spent over 30 years designing the environmental services installations in buildings and introducing innovative sustainable ways of making buildings comfortable. More recently, Mr. Watts has also been involved in shaping the wider agenda of energy and resource use in the UK. He is now involved in developing novel engineering solutions and products to address issues of resource use. Forum – 15:50 hours

Mr. Martijn Wisse | Technical University Delft

Martijn Wisse is the founding director of the Delft Biorobotics Laboratory where he researches biologically inspired robotic solutions. His former work includes human-like two-legged walking robots which are featured in a well-cited Science paper. Subsequent work on flexible robot grippers inspired by the human hand resulted in the foundation of the spin-off company Lacquey BV, the world’s specialist in food handling. In his current work on flexible manufacturing he is coordinator of the EU project “Factory-in-a-Day” which has led to the highly successful startup “Delft Robotics BV” delivering intelligent robots to small and medium enterprises. Since 2008 Jim Stolze is on a mission to make the Netherlands more innovative. He achieves this through inspirational events such as TEDxAmsterdam, television programs such as Future Makers and by writing books and giving lectures. Stolze is currently working with Startup Delta to introduce the Dutch startup scene to the world. Startup Delta thinks that the Netherlands offers a variety of excellent technologies and disciplines, creativity, openness to change, innovative talent and instinct for business to make startups accelerate. Forum Joost Verheijen (1965) studied Agricultural Economics at Wageningen University. After that he worked for over 26 years in the international Food & Agribusiness sector, mostly within Rabobank. Amongst others he has been responsible for the Large Corporates portfolio of Rabobank Westland, with a special interest in financing sustainable innovations in horticulture. As part of his extra-curricular activities he is also actively involved in notfor-profit and political organisations with a focus on food & agribusiness, sustainability and international development cooperation.
