Cleaner - and The greenest Building up to better 10 industry 14 ReMaTec2011 16 Cleaning has always been an essential part of remanufacturing processes. And with constantly increasing requirements for the cleanliness of remanufactured parts it becomes ever more important. We take a look of what is coming up in the cleaning segment.

There is no doubt that parts remanufacturers represent one of the greenest industries. This has been this way for a long time. Whether you know it or not, the green assets under your roof are endless and can be utilized to improve remanufacturers’ bottom lines. US Management Consultant Tom Marx explains how to maximise the benefits of ‘green’.

Not only will a range of large players in the reman industry be participating in this year’s ReMaTec2011 show in June for the first time the event will also attract some of the industry’s leading associations. Amsterdam RAI, the shows organisers, report on the preparation for what they expect to be the biggest and, hopefully, best ReMaTec to date.

EDITOR’S LETTER ReMaTecNews Volume 11 – Number 1 – February 2011 ReMaTecNews, the only international news magazine dedicated to automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing worldwide, is an independent channel for news, views and developments within the remanufacturing industry.

Towards a busy 2011 As in most other industrial segments, the story coming out of the reman industry is not consistent. Some remanufacturers are doing OK, some are doing better, some are just about managing and for some business is slow. Nothing unusual in that. Two things cannot be denied, however. One is that, in general, optimism is returning to the industry - a belief that a corner has been turned and that the worst effects of the economic crisis are over. There is much to support this conclusion. The fact that Amsterdam RAI, the organisers of the ReMaTec reman show in June have already sold more floor space than ever before is just one of the many indications. The other is that on a global basis, interest in remanufacturing - automotive and heavy duty reman, in particular - is growing. We see it in the Chinese authorities’ increasing support for reman initiatives as well as in the initiatives taken by industrial giants to set up reman operations in China. This, too, is reflected in APRA’s (Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association’s) plans for setting up an Asian division and organising a reman forum in Shanghai in April. It has been slow in coming but it is clear that more reman-related news will be forthcoming from China as Asia’s largest nation prepares to become the world’s largest car market. During 2010, further signs emerged in both Europe and America. On this side of the Atlantic, CLEPA, the European distributors’ association, reaffirmed its interest in evolving its reman activities, including the decision to participate in ReMaTec2011 for the first time. Concurrently, towards the end of 2010, MEMA, the important aftermarket association, established a new remanufacturing division, MERA, in order to serve its reman members better and contribute more towards promoting reman. Of course, it’s too early to predict the precise outcome of these many initiatives, ideas, concepts and moves. What is clear, however, is that, in many respects, reman is on a roll. It’s now up to each of the industry’s players to make the most of it. Since, in very many respects, remanufacturers are inventive people, we can allow ourselves to be rather optimistic for the future of the industry as a whole.

FSEG uses Czech base for European expansion Formally established in late 2009, when the global remanufacturer Flight Systems acquired a European headquarters, Flight Systems European Group s.r.o. is looking forward to substantial growth over the next few years. “We believe that the prospects within the EU are excellent,” says Marc Baines, who heads up Flight Systems’ new European venture, for the parent company Cignet LLC. “Our technical and electronics reman experience, and our wide range of OE products have allowed us to be a leader in electronic reman process development, tester design and full service support for our OE customers. Our business plan sees us doubling our sales in the next three-four years. Consequently, we’re adding capital equipment, creating new jobs and training the existing workforce in a new emerging EU market.”

Underlying their expectations for growth, is a firm belief that environmental aspects are driving a substantial part of the legislative and consumer markets. As environmental awareness becomes increasingly important to companies in Europe, and the rest of the world, businesses are now re-evaluating ‘design for manufacturability (DFM)’, and searching for multiple life cycles for their products. As a result, there is a shift of ‘DFM’ becoming ‘design for remanufacturing’, enhancing the full product life cycle.

Cultural shift “A cultural and consumer shift is happening that drives producers to find more value, with adherence to OE specifications, while meeting the environmental awareness,” says Marc Baines. “The electronics industry is the founda-

tion for our modern society. Electronics touch our lives on a daily basis, and FSEG wants to continue adding ‘green value’ to our products, while supporting our customer needs and their profitability.” A metallurgical/materials engineer by profession, Marc Baines has over 20 years experience in the remanufacturing, automotive and electronics industries. Throughout his career, he has held positions in Management, Production Operations, Quality and Engineering for global OEM and R&D companies, in diesel fuel systems, mechanical/electronic remanufacturing and hybrid and electric vehicles. He is currently a member of the Exhibition Committee for the biennial ReMaTec reman trade show in Amsterdam. “Today’s remanufacturer needs to have a strong sense of the original OEM requirements

and the ever changing reman market. This experience is a large advantage that FSEG offers its customers,” he says. “Having a strong sense of product functionality and original design intent means that you can remanufacture to OE specifications, thus offering our customers a technically-minded, cost effective solution, to their reman product needs.” As Flight Systems continues to expand its remanufacturing services within the EU’s automotive, industrial, medical and electronic markets, the group will target mechatronic units, industrial/medical controllers and vehicle system controllers. At its plant in Vrchlabí, acquired from Schwaiger GmbH, (a manufacturer of satellite multi switches and amplifiers for consumer satellite systems) the group has over 2500 sq/m2 of manufacturing space with an on-site electrical and mechanical engineering staff, 2 SMT production lines, full logistics sales and distribution, and core storage support. Cleaning

Improving aqueous cleaning with filtration By David Fister and Robert German of the Golisano Institute at Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York

Remanufacturing organizations are always looking for new ways to reduce the cost of their cleaning operations through decreases in waste disposal costs, chemical and water use, and the labor associated with frequent cleaning solution changeovers. One cost reduction strategy often used is extending the life of the aqueous solution in ultrasonic and spray cabinet parts washers. This is typically done by applying some type of filtration to the cleaning solution to remove suspended contaminants. Aqueous washers often have built in oil skimmers, screens, or bag filters which provide adequate filtration, but are not enough to significantly extend the bath life since they fail to remove suspended solids and oil emulsions. Through ultrafiltration companies can often see a significant extension of the cleaner bath, but success is highly dependent on the cleaning system and dirt load of the system. In the summer of 2010, the Center performed an ultrafiltration implementation study for a remanufacturer of heavy duty starters, alternators, fuel injector pumps, and turbochargers. The remanufacturer was interested in reducing the disposal cost of hazardous waste in the form of wash water solution from a 180 gallon cabinet washer. This solution was found to contain traces of lead, that was transferred from the Babbitt found in engine bearings, which required it to be classified as hazardous. The company was investigating a method for reducing the total volume of hazardous waste by separating the cleaning solution from the contaminated sludge. The goal of the project was to assist in the pilot testing of an ultrafiltration unit from

Arbortech (www.arbortech.com). This unit was to be installed on a high-pressure aqueous spray wash cabinet used for both precleaning of cores and cleaning of disassembled parts. The process, if successful, would remove the lead contamination into a thickened sludge for disposal as hazardous material and the filtered solution could be reused as clean washwater. This would reduce the cost of regular wastewater disposal (low lead content) and the cost of cleaning chemistry by extending the tank life.

Cleanliness requirements

covered in this article was capable of withstanding alkaline cleaners (pH 14) and high temperatures (200oF / 93,3oC). The first step in the project was to conduct bench testing of the selected ultrafiltration technology. The particular Arbortech unit studied was a Washer Washer WW2 unit (WW2). This unit utilizes a ceramic membrane ultrafiltration technology to separate the suspended particles including lead and oil emulsion, out of the solution while allowing the soap and water to pass through the membrane. Figure 1 illustrates the results of using ultrafiltration.

It should be noted that ultrafiltration is typically applied in situations where high cleanliness requirements exist or the cleaning chemistry solution is very expensive. In these situations, extending cleaning solution life can be economically beneficial through reduction of rework and makeup chemical cost. Although more expensive, ultrafiltration using ceramic membranes can withstand higher temperatures, stronger acids, and stronger bases than less resilient organic material membranes. The Arbortech product

Based on the success of the bench testing, the remanufacturer installed a WW2 at their facility to test out the filtration process for the cabinet washwater. The WW2 is a system with a 50 gallon process tank which means that the solution gets recirculated through the filter and gradually concentrates the suspended solids and lead into the 50 gallon tank. As this concentrate thickens, the filter flow slows to the point that the filter needs to be cleaned. In the case of the

The WW2 system could be deployed on the cabinet washer if the company could retrofit a different technology to remove the heavy solids that settle in the bottom of the sump. The company resolved to investigate this operation separately for comparison against the cost of paying the current hazardous waste disposal fees.

Added value with optimised cleaning ✍ By Doris Schulz Cleaning has always been an essential part of the remanufacturing process. And with constantly increasing requirements for the cleanliness of remanufactured parts it becomes evermore important. Nevertheless, cleaning is often seen just as a necessary evil, even though an optimised cleaning process offers significant potential for cost savings and higher quality. It is not only the requirement that remanufactured parts should more or less meet new production’s specifications, increasing cost pressure also demands that cleaning processes be carefully examined. This is very likely to lead to better product quality and economy.

Matching the cleaning process to the parts and the contamination Unfortunately, there’s no single solution by which the required cleanliness can be

achieved efficiently and ecologically. Each cleaning task needs individually defined solutions. Essential factors in this include part geometry, material, type and degree of contamination, cleaning agent, mechanics, process treatment duration, throughput, and cleanliness requirements. The process can be ideally adjusted to these parameters with the help of cleaning tests conducted in the test facilities of the machine or cleaning agent manufacturer, using original contaminated parts.

Cleaning agents for efficient wet chemical cleaning The cleaning media which are most frequently used in wet cleaning processes in the remanufacturing industry are neutral, alkaline and acidic aqueous cleaning agents. Their cleaning effect is based upon two different component groups, namely builders and tensides. Aqueous media are today used in a formulation as demulsifiers, which have a decisive influence on the cleaning effectiveness and the service life of the cleaning solution.

Cleaning

Remanufactured parts must more or less fulfil new production’s standards – technical and optical. This makes cleaning more and more important.

As the oil is separated and can be continuously removed from the bath with skimmers the solution can be used much longer. Permanent oil removal is also important when an immersion cleaning system is used, because the parts would otherwise become contaminated again when removed from the bath. Aqueous cleaning agents also can contain ingredients which can be classified as chelating agents, preservatives and corrosion inhibitors. These serve to increase the ability to remove carbon

The new ultrasonic cleaning machines Motor Clean from TIERRA TECH, which are available in different sizes up to 7,000 litres, has been developed for all types of motor components especially for the remanufacturing industry.

and/or oxide, to prevent the formation of solid metallic soaps, to regulate water hardness, and to assure corrosion protection for the parts to be cleaned and the cleaning system. Several manufacturers of aqueous media, including the Denmark-based DSTKemi, offer cleaning agents, which work at low temperatures, i.e. from 38°C. The advantages of lower temperatures are reduced energy and water consumption which, in turn, results in lower operating costs as well as reduced CO2 emissions.

cleaning is also based upon immersion, and is capable of achieving high levels of cleanliness. With its new Motor Clean series TIERRA TECH has developed ultrasonic cleaning machines for all types of motor components especially for the remanufacturing industry. This Spanish specialist for ultrasonic cleaning equipment has paid particular attention to a proper decarbonisation in a reasonable time as well as to low maintenance. In addition to the highly flexible machine, the company offers a biodegradable cleaning agent which can be used for aluminium and steel components.

Interaction amongst cleaning agent and mechanics To achieve the desired cleaning results within short periods, the effectiveness of the cleaning medium is enhanced by means of various physical processes. In the case of spray cleaning, contamination is removed by the combination of the cleaning agent and the energy of the spray jet. Additional motion/rotation of the goods to be washed and/or the spray nozzles assures uniform cleaning results. Immersion cleaning is often preferred for parts with complex geometries, for example with blind holes and undercuts. When the workpiece is immersed into the cleaning bath, contamination is dissolved by the chemical action of the cleaning agent. Rotating or swivelling the parts within the bath enhances the cleaning effect. In the case of pressurised flow cleaning, pumps draw fluid out of the cleaning bath, and subsequently inject it back into the bath at high pressure levels through nozzles located underneath the fill-level. This results in strong currents, thus causing turbulence, which removes the contamination. When the fluid flows past blind holes and recesses, a suction effect is generated which ‘draws out’ contamination. Ultrasonic

Metalas - a case study Cleaning and degreasing at low temperature The Liebherr-Nederland B.V. repair and maintenance workshop in Amersfoort in the Eastern part of The Netherlands repairs and overhauls mobile cranes manufactured by Liebherr. For degreasing and cleaning of parts a Metalas SOLO MCF1500 aqueous spray washing machine is used in combination with DEGREEZ/3P developed by Denmark‘s DSTKemi. This demulsifying, low temperature (see main article) cleaning chemical is slightly alkaline and has a good passivation capacity. It works at a temperature of 40oC. “In the field of degreasing and cleaning of parts, the DST-DEGREEZ concept is one of the most important developments over the last five years,“ explains Rien van Sliedregt, Managing Director of Metalas Cleaning Systems, which represents DST-Kemi in the Netherlands. “The product not only economic

Due to its demulsifying concept the slightly alkaline cleaning chemical offers optimal cleaning results and a long service life of the bath. Another factor which offers cost savings is the low working temperature of only 40°C.

but is also highly environmentally friendly. The quality of the bath is kept in good condition by using an automatic dosing system and a rotating disk oil skimmer. The machine is not constantly in use, but it only takes 20 to 30 minutes to bring the detergent to working temperature.

For the cleaning of components of hydraulic aggregates used in construction machines German-based LPW Reinigungstechnik has designed a custom-made solution. The Power Jet 960 TT, a single chamber machine for water-based cleaning agents, is equipped with two media tanks, an ultrasound unit, a steam condenser and a vacuum drying system on a roller conveyor. After disassembling the parts made from steel and cast steel are collected in a special basket, max. weight is 400 kg. This assures that all components of one aggregate will be cleaned together. The first process step is immersion cleaning with ultrasonic, in which oil, soot, swarf, wear debris, and soil get completely removed. For this

step cleaning media from the first tank is used in a concentration up to 4%. In the second step the parts get rinsed with media from the second tank. To protect the cleaned parts against corrosion the rinsing media includes the cleaning agent in a concentration of 0.5%. After the vacuum drying the parts are ready for testing and repair. The throughput is 4 to 6 batches per hour. A coalescence oil separator and a filtration system ensure a long service life of the media.

The separated oil is continuously removed from the bath with a coalescence oil separator. For the removal of particulate material the cleaning machine is equipped with a filtration system.

Green is the new black How remanufacturers can get the best of out the green wave and maximise profits.

✍ by Tom Marx There is no doubt that parts remanufacturers represent one of the greenest industries in the U.S. In fact, it has been this way for a long time. Whether you know it or not, the green assets under your roof are endless and can be utilized to improve your bottom line. In our research, The Marx Group has found that many remanufacturers recognize they are a green business. Unfortunately, far too many have not included this message in their marketing materials. This article will provide practical advice on how to implement green marketing into your overall marketing strategy.

Present the facts When people see the facts about how remanufacturing is green, it is a strong and com-

14 l ReMaTecNews

pelling message. Remanufacturing has always been green and it is the ultimate form of recycling. Be sure to tell the story that developing a product new from virgin materials creates more greenhouse gas emissions and creates more of a carbon footprint than taking an existing product and remanufacturing it. Remanufacturing reduces energy use, reduces landfill waste and preserves renewable and nonrenewable natural resources. The marketing message to consumers is: new is not necessarily better and certainly not better for the environment. It is a winning message when all the facts are laid out. Here are some other key facts you can weave into your marketing: – Remanufacturing can conserve up to 85 per cent of the material and energy

required to produce the same product as new. – Remanufacturing is estimated to save 14 million tons of natural raw materials annually. – Remanufacturing is estimated to save 400 trillion BTUs per year of energy. – Remanufactured automotive product components are 40 per cent to 60 per cent of the cost of a new components. There are many more compelling facts available. The bottom line: remanufacturing is big business with approximately $53 billion in annual sales. You have a great story to tell. Remanufacturing is good for the economy and good for the environment. Don’t ignore it. Use it to your advantage in all your marketing efforts.

Practice what you preach Only a few years ago most of the world took a ‘who cares’ attitude toward being green, but that has changed significantly. According to a March 2008 McKinsey Quarterly study, 87 per cent of consumers are concerned about the environment and the social impacts of the products they make.

So as remanufacturers make sure you practise what you preach. Make sure your company is doing everything it can to recycle paper, plastic, cans and bottles. This will set a strong example for your customer base and employees. Now is the time to make green marketing your business! Tom Marx is President and CEO of The Marx Group, a full service marketing communications agency that exclusively serves clients in the automotive, commercial vehicle and heavy duty aftermarkets. Collectively, the industry employs close to 500,000 people annually. The automotive remanufacturing industry alone is estimated to be $25 billion a year. And some 33 per cent of consumers indicated they were ready to buy green products or have already done so. Almost every company with a public face wants to be green, including Dell, IBM, and Hewlett Packard. In fact, Newsweek is keeping score on green companies. The answer is clear: green is the new black. Consumers want to support companies that have an interest in sustainability, care about climate change, landfill minimization and preservation of our resources.

CLEPA to have strong presence at ReMaTec2011 CLEPA, the European Association of Automotive Suppliers and one of Europe’s key automotive trade associations, is actively participating in the ReMaTec2011 remanufacturing exhibition in Amsterdam in June. The organisation will take a stand at the exhibition and host together with FIGIEFA meetings that are expected to attract a broad range of important industry players to the Amsterdam event. “Important CLEPA members Bosch, Remy, Schaeffler, TRW, Valeo, Wabco and ZF are taking part this year as exhibitors at ReMaTec. To underline the importance of remanufacturing for the automotive industry as a whole and for CLEPA’s members in particular, CLEPA has also decided to install an information booth at ReMaTec. This will give exhibitors and visitors the opportunity to gain more information on the activities of CLEPA and its members with regard to remanufacturing,” Josef Frank, Clepa’s Aftermarket Director said. Josef Frank added: “CLEPA members who are active in remanufacturing have recently agreed on a definition on remanufacturing and the associated industrial process. Because of this, remanufactured products from CLEPA members have a high quality and they now want to make a clear distinction between reused, refurbished, rebrushed, re-..”

The definition CLEPA’s definition of remanufacturing is: “A remanufactured product fulfils a similar function to the original part. It is manufactured using a standardised industrial process in

ambition to make this year’s event more attractive than ever before. In fact, at this stage, six months before the show opens its doors, we’re already well ahead of previous editions in term of exhibitors and floor space sold, i.e. 85 per cent of the available space. To me there is no doubt whatsoever that the 2011 show is set to become the largest and best ever.”

Additional events Another new development is the many additional events during the show. The new ReMaTec Theatre, which offers a top-class seminar room, has been extensively booked for lectures, seminars, speeches and meetings by, among others, ArvinMeritor, Bosch, BU Drive, Clepa, Flight Systems, Metalas and Schaeffler.

ERA Benelux N.V. EXHIBITORS IN THE SPOTLIGHT An exhibitor in the very first edition of ReMaTec in 2001, ERA Benelux is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2011. ReMaTec is the exception for this expanding Belgian company in that ERA does not usually exhibit at other automotive shows. Stefaan Vandenbussche, the Managing Director of ERA Benelux explains: “ERA prefers to invest in product development, automation and catalogue data for TecDoc and Aldoc. The customer sees a direct result of this and values it.” So why is ReMaTec the exception? “The first edition of ReMaTec in 2001 coincided with the founding of ERA and was a great platform to announce our presence in the market,” says Stefaan Vandenbussche. “On the show floor we met quite a few of our long-term clients with whom we have built a strong business relationship over the past ten years. Our participation this year is a way to thank our clients

from day one for their loyalty to our company and welcome new ones. It is also a sign to the market that after ten years we are still going strong - as enthusiastic as ever.” ERA will present five product groups at the show: steering racks, steering pumps, airconditioning compressors, brake calipers and

driveshafts as well as the recently introduced product group EPS steering columns. Stefaan Vandenbussche explains the philosophy behind the new stand: “Our stand has a central tower with six arms, each of which holds a display representing a different product group. We look forward to demonstrating all our products to the ReMaTec visitor.”

Euro Car Parts expands Euro Car Parts (ECP), a leading parts supplier in the UK recently opened three branches in Bristol, Liverpool and Peterborough in just three weeks. The 32,000 sq. ft. Bristol branch is the regional distribution hub covering the south of Bristol and surrounding areas and provides back up and delivery services to other areas in South West England and Wales. Shortly afterwards, the company opened a 30,000 sq. ft. Liverpool branch with 16 staff to cover the Merseyside district. The third

UMC is one of the US’ leading remanufacturers and distributors of automotive and truck parts. The company also serves a wide variety of other industries including heavy-truck, recreational vehicles, construction, agriculture, marine, industrial engine and aircraft. Man Lift Mfg. Co. designs and builds specialty lifts, including explosion proof, omni-motion scissor, atrium track drive, MSHA mining and clean room for various market segments. “UMC will now expand beyond automotive parts into the specialty man lift arena,” said Don Dunn, President of UMC.

Donna West, Director of Communications commented: “The three new branches will extend ECP service to parts of the UK not covered currently or in other cases improve proximity to areas already catered for.” “Customers will save up to 70% from what is now the UK’s largest car parts retailer. ECP’s roots go back over 30 years as a specialist German car parts supplier, but today you can buy any part for any car.”

Flexible Honing Tool RMP of New Jersey, a remanufacturer of car and truck engines and related parts, has pioneered a metal finishing system that improves the quality of the surface lining in the cylinders of its rebuilt engines. The new method incorporates a special engine hone used to finish the cylinder wall after it has undergone a rigid honing operation. The company claims that results indicate that the company’s rebuilt engines have experienced less engine failure due to improper seating of piston rings with poorly finished cylinder wall as result of using the honing tool. In the past, RMP honed engine cylinders with a standard rigid honing machine, but found that the surface finish did not meet the company’s set of specifications. According to Dale Houghton, RMP’s engine department supervisor, the cylinder walls of the engines were receiving a peaky finish, with cut, torn and folded metal remaining along the cylinders’ surface. This type of finish, he noted, could eventually lead to engine failure. This problem could begin during the break-in period of the newly rebuilt engine when the peaky finish could adversely co-act with the piston rings.

Analysts predict Heavy Duty upswing Detroit — U.S. car and truck sales are projected to grow by as much as two million units annually during the next few years as the industry rebounds from the recession, according to automotive forecasters. The market research firm, IHS Automotive, expects sales to grow to 12.8 million vehicles in 2011 from 11.5 million in 2010. Sales will grow to 14.8 million in 2012, 16 million in 2013 and reach 17.2 million in

2016, said Michael Robinet, Director of Global Production Forecasts for IHS. A drop to 10.4 million cars and trucks sold in 2009 was devastating, resulting in job losses and financial distress that forced General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC as well as many suppliers to file for bankruptcy. “Sales are being driven by strong vehicle pricing, financing and more available credit,” Robinet said.

Brian Spratt has been Chief Executive of Britain’s Automotive Distribution Federation (ADF) since 1999. Council spokesman David Russell explains: “With the development of the IAAF over the last year and its evolution from the

OPPORTUNITIES

Future reman opportunities: AWD-systems

More electronics, less friction Despite the drive towards higher fuel efficiency which sees many an SUV leave the dealer forecourt with only the front or rear wheels driven, all-wheel drive systems will continue to feature heavily in new car models.

Because of the need for energy conservation (among other things), the design of today’s and tomorrows high-tech AWD drivelines is a bit different to what we are used to in our transmission workshops. All-wheel drive systems split into two categories: permanent and non-permanent. Permanent all-wheel drive systems like those used in ‘real’ 4x4s and rally-bred high-performance specials, work by dividing the available engine torque between front and rear axles by way of differentials. However, non-permanent systems use a clutch between both pairs of wheels. In the latter case, only the front wheels (or the rear wheels in a rear- or mid-rearengined, 4WD application (think Porsche 911 or Audi R8) are being driven permanently. As soon as the vehicle stability control electronics, into which most AWD systems are now integrated, detects a difference in rotating speed between front and rear wheels beyond a certain threshold, the clutch in the propshaft between front and rear differential will be closed to some extent and thus, a proportion of motive power is being diverted to the other axle. The maximum achievable torque split is achieved when the clutch is fully closed, i.e. both axles are ‘permanently’ attached to the engine/gearbox. This, of course, equates to a 50/50 split between front and rear axle. Unlike with ‘permanent’ systems, varying torque split from 0/100 and 100/0 between both axles is not an option.

The 4th generation Haldex clutch.

20 l ReMaTecNews

The market leader in non-permanent AWD systems for at least European cars is undoubtedly the Swedish firm Haldex. Amongst others, the Volkswagen Group and Saab are using the latest, fourth generation Haldex clutch system. The Haldex system consists of multiple ‘wet’ clutch discs that are integrated in the rear differential (in front-engined, frontwheel drive-based systems; in a rear-engined, rear-wheel drive based installation it would

driven axle, so that for instance the outer rear wheel gets a greater proportion of available engine torque when the car is turning a corner, which will ‘push’ the vehicle into the bend and counteract understeer. This is called ‘torque vectoring’ and can also be incorporated in the differential of two-wheel drive vehicles. Of course, all this is ultimately being controlled by the vehicle’s stability control system, too. Another supplier of non-permanent, clutch-based all-wheel drive systems is Magna Powertrain with its Dynamax AWD system. Like the Haldex systems, Dynamax is based on

In the Audi R8, the clutch pack for the AWD system is integrated with the front differential.

Audi has been at the forefront of AWD development for passenger cars and the German brand employs a myriad of technologies in its current model range, each one closely tailored to its intended use and the vehicle platform in which it is being used. The smaller models, which share their platforms with other cars of the Volkswagen group, use non-permanent, hydraulic clutch based systems, as does the rear-mid engined R8 sports car where the clutch pack is in the front differential. The ‘bespoke’ Audi platforms with longitudinally installed front engines (one for A4, A5, Q5 and another for A6, A7, A8, Q7) however have always featured differential-based Quattro technology,

different geometries for the gear teeth. The propshaft to the rear wheels is connected to the rear crown wheel, while the other controls the power transfer to the front wheels. Normally there is no difference in turning speed between the two crown wheels, and engine torque is being transferred 40/60 to front and rear wheels. As soon as the wheels of one of the axles lose grip there will be a difference in turning speed between the crown wheels and the torque transfer ratio between front and rear wheels will change so the car continues to follow its intended trajectory without interference of the ESP system. Also, Audi offers an electronically controlled, hydraulically operated active ‘sports’ rear differential on some sports models that performs the same function of torque vectoring between both rear wheels as Haldex’ eLSD. Again, with reaction times in the 100 millisecond range it is quicker to respond than the vehicle’s ESP system, which can only react after the vehicle diverts from its intended trajectory.

with vehicle manufacturers because of their reduced drivetrain losses and easy integration in FWD vehicle platforms, there’s still a fairly sizeable market for the differential-based permanent systems. For the past thirty years,

India resists reman goods at Doha talks India has refused to play ball with the US and other developed countries on a controversial proposal for opening up developing markets to remanufactured goods under the Doha trade talks, claiming this will lead to dumping of sub-standard goods. The One India website which monitors the talks described the Indian attitude: “The subject of trade in remanufactured goods requires extensive groundwork before one can look at specific commitments, whether it be soft or hard or on a best endeavour basis,” India said in its proposal. “Without this understanding,” said India, “there is a fear among many developing members that the current text of the proponents could be used as a conduit for dumping sub-standard products into their markets.”

‘Realities’ “Members must look at (the realities..) without pre-judgement of its final outcome. Any decision can be taken only at the end of the current work programme and India remains wary of any early (conclusions from..) the work programme,” India believes. Among other things, the proposal put forward by developed countries like the US, Japan and Switzerland calls for ‘creation of an upfront definition, commitments to market access and reviews of NTBs (non-tariff barriers) and the creation of a working group on Trade in remanufactured goods with a view to raise and discuss specific trade concerns on remanufactured goods’. Besides India, Brazil, South Africa and China and other countries have concerns about opening up their markets to remanufactured goods. During recent meetings of small groups under the Doha talks, key industrialised countries, especially the US and Japan, have insisted that market access for remanufactured goods is as central as sectoral tariff reductions to the success of the trade negotiations. India said it held extensive consultations with domestic stakeholders, who have stated their opposition to opening up the market to remanufactured goods.

FIRM welcomes new member From the New Year, FIRM welcomes a new member: GMY - Turkey In joining FIRM, GMY is looking forward to improving its relations with European colleagues and communities. GMY is the national association of engine rebuilders and remanufacturers in Turkey. In 2003, FIAT embarked on a nationwide project to standardise engine rebuilding operations in its service network. The project also included setting quality standards for engine rebuilding and remanufacturing workshops that serve the Fiat service network. Ford and Iveco subsequently joined the project and in 2006, 26 engine rebuilding companies came together to form a national association of engine rebuilders, GMY. Aimed at applying OEM high-tech equipment and remanufacturing techniques to rebuild engines to OEM

quality, GMY has developed rapidly ever since. Within a few years, the high standards set by the GMY association have become the engine rebuilding standards in the Turkish market while at the same time, GMY has become the official partner of many OEMs. The impressive list comprises Alfa Romeo, Chevrolet, Case, Citroën, DFM, Fiat, Geely, Hyundai, Iveco, Kia, Lancia, Man, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Opel, Skoda, Subaru and Tata.

40 members With 40 members in 31 different cities, GMY is the leading body representing the interests of Turkish engine rebuilders. The membership of GMY is restricted to engine rebuilders whose standards match strict engine and machining specifications. These specifications include

surface roughness measuring devices, special plateau honing equipment and crack detectors complying with ISO 9001-2008 standards. The GMY training department is responsible for providing technical support, special training sessions, seminars, on-the-jobtraining and catalogues for GMY members. Moreover, GMY has its own ‘Standards of Service’ documents for rebuilding and remanufacturing internal combustion engines that define the standards for rebuilt/remanufactured engines. GMY is also responsible for conducting audits among GMY members to ensure the quality of the rebuilt products.

Standards The GMY service concept includes ensuring customer satisfaction, nationwide warranty, standardised service at every service point, affordability, speed and technical support for its members. GMY serves almost every aspect of internal combustion engine rebuilding from one-cylinder compressor engines to marine engines up to 6m long. Every engine rebuilt by GMY members is under a 2-year/100,000 km warranty by the GMY. All records of work performed by the GMY service network are kept for two years, both in written form and in GMY’s webbased reporting system.

GMY, Turkey’s engine remanufacturers’ association, is the newest national association to join FIRM and is dedicated to enhancing engine remanufacturing in Turkey.

FIRM’s new website A completely redesigned and improved website has been launched by FIRM. The objective of the new platform is to enhance FIRM’s visibility and increase the awareness of public authorities of engine remanufacturing. With a thoroughly fresh appearance and a more visually appealing format, the new website contains more information about the organisation and can be viewed at www.firm-org.eu. “This is one more step in FIRM’s long-term objective to provide information on engine remanufacturing to consumers and policy makers in Europe,” FIRM President Philippe Maerten says. “Information is power and combined with FIRM’s day-to-day political lobbying activities this power should be used to help trigger more reman-oriented EU policies going forward.” Jean-Ludovic Basset, Head of FIRM’s Brussels office, added: “The internet is an integral part of

FIRM’s plan to communicate mission-related activities, timely information and achievements to our members and also provide direct

and indirect information to researchers, advocacy groups, students, media, and the general public. This new website makes it easy for anyone interested in reman to find information and answers to questions in a clear and userfriendly manner.”

Networking In addition to extensive online information, the new website also serves as a network to improve relations between engine remanufacturers across Europe. The previous version of FMD, the specific search engine for FIRM members, has been restructured to allow easy self-update by users. Similarly, members of the general public can also find engine remanufacturers near them at a click of a mouse. Developed by AnatalPro, the website has been redesigned and rebranded in collaboration with French corporate branding agency Profil-Créatif.

NEWS

Asia and China Although I am not an expert on Asia and China I believe that certain messages are so obvious that it is not difficult to draw interesting conclusions. The reason why I am touching on this is that I believe it is high time to decide to become more actively involved in what is bound to become the world’s biggest remanufacturing market. APRA needs to demonstrate that we are not only the voice of remanufacturing in North America (since 1941) and in Europe (since 1987) but that, in fact, we also have a global mission to fulfill. With Asia destined to become the globe’s biggest automotive market within the foreseable future the continent is also set to emerge as the world’s largest market for remanufactured automotive components. I am well aware that many believe that, at least currently, Asia is not exactly doing the remanufacturing industry any favours because of its supplies of new, copied units that compete with remanufactured units and, therefore, defeats the purpose of remanufacturing. Which, of course, is to save energy and natural resources and offer an economical alterna-

tive for servicing vehicles. However this problem is, hopefully, only a short term one, because in the longer term remanufacturing must win this battle. The market potential for remanufactured units in Asia is huge and remanufacturers are by nature so flexible and responsive to the market forces that I am confident that they will be able to cope with the issues relating to selling new instead of remanufactured units. What also makes me optimistic is the fact that the Chinese Government is clearly interested in making remanufacturing a success. I have not seen any western government so supportive of remanufacturing than the current Chinese leaders. In the most recent 5 year plan they intend to improve energy efficiency by 20 % and have publicly announced that remanufacturing is one industry that can help to achieve this objective. On the backdrop of the drastic measures recently taken by China to improve efficiency, you have to believe that they are determined to achieve their aims and by pushing remanufacturing aggressively. The Chinese National Development and Reform Commission, which is responsible for

✍ By Fernand Weiland, Vice-chairman of APRA in Europe formulating and implementing national strategies, has clearly established the rules as to how it wishes to promote remanufacturing. We may want to influence certain rules and, therefore, have asked to be consulted before the regulations become embedded in law. In the meantime the Chinese government has granted funds to further research into remanufacturing and, in doing so, have clearly demonstrated that they are determined to promote remanufacturing. Asian automotive remanufacturers have already created a sizeable remanufacturing basis. Our mission is now to encourage them to join APRA-ASIA. For more information please visit www.apra-europe.org.

Update to BuyReman The 2011 edition of the BuyReman Marketplace, APRA’s online marketplace, has been given a facelift to improve appearance and usability, which includes a range of new features. APRA President Bill Gager stated, “We are very pleased with the results of the first year of operation and look forward to an even bigger second year. These marketplace communities take time to develop, but the remanufacturing marketplace has seen tremendous growth and acceptance.”

Some key statistics taken in June 2010 and November 2010 show some dramatic increases in viewership. Total monthly visits increased by 76 per cent and monthly page views increased by 125 per cent. The BuyReman: Remanufacturing Marketplace can be easily accessed from a link on the APRA homepage at www.apra.org. To be contacted by someone about getting listed properly in the marketplace, please contact APRA President, Bill Gager at gager@buyreman.com.
