EDITOR’S LETTER
ReMaTecNews Volume 12 – Number 4 – June/July 2012
An action packed autumn ahead
ReMaTecNews, the only international news magazine and website dedicated to automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing worldwide, is an independent channel for news, views and developments within the remanufacturing industry. Published by: RAI Langfords B.V. P.O. Box 10099 1001 EB Amsterdam The Netherlands In association with
Usually at this time of year businesses and industries across the board begin to wind down for the summer. Remanufacturers are no different. But perhaps this year will prove to be an exception. This certainly seems to be the case seen from the vantage point of the newsdesk here at ReMaTecNews. In fact, just around the corner is what promises to be an action packed time for the reman industry, with a whole range of events in all corners of the world. We make no excuses for ranking the World Remanufacturing Summit, organised by the University of Bayreuth with ReMaTecNews as partner, among the top events of the autumn season 2012. For some time now, there has been an imbalance between the advanced technological research results available to remanufacturers on the one side and the actual use of such material by the reman industry on the other. If that imbalance can be addressed, not only would individual reman companies benefit, but so would the industry as a whole. In an initiative towards that end, the summit in Bayreuth in early September is aimed at building new bridges – as well as strengthening existing ones - between remanufacturers and high-tech establishments which are set to move the industry forwards. Bayreuth University’s Chair of Manufacturing and Remanufacturing is one such example. But as the summit’s agenda and list of participants demonstrate, other world-class institutions are also capable of benefitting the industry by providing inspiration, innovative solutions, new knowledge and technological advances. As far as we’re aware the Global Remanufacturing Summit is the first ever attempt to create a worldwide meeting place for reman practitioners and their counterparts in the world of research. Just before this edition of ReMaTecNews went to print, came news of yet another initiative to link research and remanufacturing as the government of Singapore announced the establishment of a new research centre for the reman industry. Today there is no lack of recognition of the need for more research into remanufacturing and to help move the industry forward. It’s now up to remanufacturers to make the best use of what is available to them. The Global Remanufacturing Summit is one important way of doing this.

Company share boosts market share Jasper celebrates 70th anniversary in remanufacturing A US automotive engine remanufacturer, celebrating 70 years in the business this month, says employee ownership and continuous improvement of remanufacturing processes are key reasons for its continued success. As a result, Indiana-based Jasper Engines has a production output that many engine remanufacturers around the world would sell their grandmothers to get. Annual production includes 65,000 petrol engines, 75,000 transmissions, 6,500 diesel engines, 5,000 differentials and rear axle assemblies. The product mix includes performance engines and transmissions, marine engines, outboard lower units and outboard powerheads to name just a few.
ESOP Company spokesman Mike Pfau says that the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) introduced in 2010 has had a significant impact on production management: “Associates are much more driven, and eager to achieve the high quality standards that remanufacturers have to deliver,” he says, adding that this has made it easier to introduce lean manufacturing initiatives and the standardisation of remanufacturing processes. “Last year, the company’s 1,700 ‘associates’ contributed over 12,000 ideas between them,” he says.
Jasper’s products are derived from the passenger car to light commercial vehicle market. The lion’s share of the business stems from independent garage owners; while a large amount of business is also derived from the supply of engine reman services to large commercial fleets. Over 140 sales representatives support its marketing activities adding that feedback produces leads about common faults in new vehicles that result in the reman products of the future. A significant involvement in social media is also producing results: “We have one individual who runs our
blog and ties it into both Facebook and Twitter. It’s a little different approach that reaches the kind of people we might not get to through our more traditional efforts. We feel it helps a lot,” says Mike Pfau. Jasper believes there is still a lot of work to do to help educate the end user about the quality of each reman product: “Our advertising department produces posters and materials for the garages so that they can show that we are not just replacing a piston in an engine that’s been damaged. All pistons are replaced and all cylinders have been re-bored.”

STS/STM of Sweden
One foot in the past – and another firmly in the future Roughly equidistant between Sweden’s famed car makers, Volvo in Torslanda and Saab in Trollhattan, lies the small town of Stenungssund. Between the rocky, western coastline leading up towards Norway and the lake and forest lands of Västra Götaland, this community of 24,000, could well symbolise Sweden’s ability to combine industrial power with care for the environment. In fact, there could hardly have been a more illustrative example than the morning ReMaTecNews visited STM, Svensk Transmission & Motor AB, a longstanding transmission remanufacturer and Scandinavia’s largest in its field – and one of the largest in Europe. During a guided tour by Managing Director Ola Stålebo, a former banker who joined the family firm five years ago, he demonstrates the plant’s new wastewater purification system – by drinking from it! “As you can see, it cleans the water so efficiently that you can drink it,” he says with a smile. Stålebo’s words are no empty boast. The words are backed by action which recently led to the completion of a EUR 1 million investment programme including a complete refurbishment of the company’s administrative headquarters on the outskirts of Steningsund together with the expansion of its production by 500 sq. m. Once again, the company’s commitment to remanufacturing is much in evidence in that all furniture

is made from recycled timber products. “If you claim to be ‘green’ you should be able to prove it,” Ola Stålebo says.
Loyal customers Founded back in 1967 by Dan Stålebo, Ola’s and his brother Erik’s father, and Arthur Berg, the two partners brought considerable transmission experience with them from their original employer when they started BorgWarner/Aisin’s reman operation
in Stenungssund. To this day Aisin maintains a minority share in the business and Volvo has remained a loyal customer from the beginning, accounting for a very substantial part of the overall business. Despite that other famous Swedish carmaker, Saab’s difficulties, remanufacturing Saab transmissions also remains another of STS rewarding activities. “As Saab has ceased production, many customers are looking for ways to service their cars. Remanufacturing is an obvious

solution for many of them so they come to us,” Ola Stålebo explains. Likewise, a long-standing relationship with the Korean brands, Hyundai and Kia, is developing in a particularly healthy manner. The two brands have, in fact, put STS in charge of their entire return system in Scandinavia, a business that is set to continue on the back of Hyundai’s and in particular, Kia’s, rising sales and expanding product ranges. “The number of automatic transmissions is growing all the time and they sell a lot of SUVs with 4-wheel drives,” he says.
Contract with Ford In April STS added yet another string to its bow and a very important one at that. In tough competition with other suppliers, STS
‘We know our customers and they know us. Mutual trust is a very important element in remanufacturing’ won a contract with Ford to supply remanufactured transmissions to the American giant’s parts depots in Europe. “This is a major step for us and we’re very pleased,” says Stålebo. “It shows that even the largest car makers understand how to strike a balance between high quality and environmental considerations on the one side and price on the other.” The first supplies to Ford started in April
STS places great emphasis on ‘green’. The plant’s waste water purification system is of such high quality that Managing Director Ola Stålebo is happy drinking it. “If you claim to be ‘green’ you should be able to prove it,” he says.

and comprise automatic transmissions for S-MAX, Mondeo and Galaxy as well as the compact Kuga and Fiesta. “Looking ahead we believe that the market for these products will be very interesting in the future. We like to work with customers that share our view of combining sustainability with uncompromising quality. This, in fact, is how our partnership with Ford started.”
Consistency The founders having retired, STS is now run by their sons. Ola Stålebo as MD, with his brother Erik Stålebo heading the sister company STM, which services private customers and Scandinavian workshops, and Kenneth Berg, Technical Director. This strong family tradition, however, is not only evidenced by the continuity in ownership (including the Aisin minority share going back to 1975). It is also reflected in the stability of the workforce. The average length of service is 16 years and some employees have served STS since 1976. In part, the
14 l ReMaTecNews
Stålebos and Kenneth Berg ascribe the company’s progress to the excellent industrial relations in the workplace. Continuity, in fact, has been a hallmark of STS’ development ever since the late 1960s. An ‘old’ company, one could say, - but with a young management team. One foot in the past – and another very much in the future. This is, for instance, illustrated by the fact that the partnership with Volvo has lasted for 40 years while the newest, with Ford began this year. In between are the relationships with Saab (between 1971 and 2011), with Aisin since 1975 and Hyundai/Kia from 2010. “We know our customers and they know us. Mutual trust is a very important element in remanufacturing,” as Kenneth Berg puts it. As of this month STS/STM employs 45 people of whom 34 work in production, five handle spare parts supply and logistics and six work in administration and management. With a turnover of some EUR 5 million per year, a current volume of 5000 automatic
transmissions annually and substantial business in the neigbouring countries Norway and Denmark, this clearly is a company that is going places.
Stable growth With STM, the private customer and workshop service having grown since it inception in 2008 while STS, the OE partner, is set for growth of 20 per cent over the next five years, the company looks forward with confidence. “We believe there is a bright future ahead,” Ola Stålebo says. ”We have invested a great deal in upgrading the business, setting up advanced equipment to deal with future technological challenges and now, in improving our building and other facilities. So we’re well prepared for the next five year. At the same time, we want stable growth rather than rapid growth. There is nothing worse than promising something, you can’t keep and customer satisfaction is all about fast and reliable delivery. That’s more important to us than growth.“

Developing your Green m Its ‘green’ credentials create interesting opportunities for the reman industry. Gary McCoy, an experienced writer on automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing, provides some clues on how to make the most out of ‘green’ marketing. Everybody talks about being ‘green’ in their business practices and consumers will often say they are interested in buying ‘green’ products. The reality is that a lot of people talk about it, but few businesses or individuals actually do it. There are numerous studies that back up this disparity between the desire to be green and actually taking action to do it. For example, a McKinsey Quarterly Study from March 2008 showed that 87 per cent of consumers are concerned about the environment and the social impact of the products they buy. However, only 33 per cent of consumers indicated they were ready to buy ‘green’ products or have already done so.
Reman always ‘green’ For those who are involved in remanufacturing products for the automotive and heavy duty industries, ‘green’ is not a new message. How many industries can say they’ve been ‘green’ for over 80 years? The remanufacturing industry can! One of the best ways to express the ‘green’ message is through industry trade associations. In the U.S., the Automotive Parts Remanufacturing Association (APRA) touts the benefits of remanufacturing in education-
al flyers that emphasize the number of American ‘green’ jobs available and the environmental benefits that are derived from remanufacturing. APRA has two solid green messages: 1) Remanufacturing Creates Jobs - Good Jobs! and 2) Remanufacturing is the Solution to Energy and Material Conservation. The Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA) recently put together a campaign that tells the aftermarket green story. Go to www.aftermarket.org/green to find out more and to download materials. Be sure to take a few minutes to watch an excellent video they’ve put together on the subject. Remanufacturing is a ‘green’ angle that can offer a huge selling point when telling your story to consumers and communicating with the public. A look at all your business practices may uncover some other environmental strengths within your company, such as the use of recycled parts or renewable resources. Keep in mind that the ‘green’ message can be used to attract socially-conscious young people who are looking for jobs that support the green cause. It can also create goodwill with customers and build awareness of your products. In addition, ‘green’ messaging can help your business ‘walk its talk’ and is something that should be integrated throughout your business. Make sure you identify the audience that cares about ‘green’ and take the time to focus on long-term opportunities. Here’s a practical example of a ‘green’ message from one of the industry’s leading remanufacturing companies, Cardone. The

company’s message: ‘Save Money and the Planet with Remanufactured Parts.’ Outside the aftermarket, Miura, a world-leader in industrial steam boilers, began looking for a new marketing message to build their North American market share. Here’s the effective ‘green’ message they used in their advertising: ‘More Companies Are Saving Money, While Saving The Planet.’ A second campaign, ‘Think Green, Save Green’, was launched to capture the growing interest in eco-friendly products, and to position Miura as the industry leader.
One company’s story A&A Midwest is a multi-faceted company that began in 1949 in Chicago. Through their cores division they have been supplying remanufacturers with engines, transmissions and internal engine parts for over 60 years. More recently, through their location in the Las Vegas area they have been involved in recycling metal (ferrous and non-ferrous) and most recently they have transitioned to become a full-service recycler handling plastic, cardboard, and electronics. To help convey A&A Midwest’s green message, The Marx Group has assisted the company with marketing and public relations. A key component of this effort has been in the area of community outreach. For three years, A&A Midwest served as the recycling center for Clark County residents who wanted to exchange their polluting gas lawn mower for a new zero-emission, cordless electric model at a greatly reduced price. The programme was extremely successful with over 3,000 mowers turned in for recycling.
Gary McCoy Gary McCoy, who has written this article for ReMaTecNews, has over 25 years of experience in marketing communications and public relations, with over 15 years of work in the automotive aftermarket. Having worked as a journalist in radio news and as a magazine and newsletter editor, he provides clients with hands-on expertise on how to successfully work with the media. The founder of Fairway Communications, he’s Public Relations Director of the Marx Group, a consultancy that specializes in the vehicle aftermarket. McCoy is a past president of the Automotive Communication Council (ACC) and in 2009 received the prestigious Northwood University Automotive Aftermarket Management Education Award. Since 2008 he has served as the managing editor of Springs magazine, a quarterly publication of the Spring Manufacturers Institute (SMI). He is a regular contributor to Aftermarket Business World magazine and APRA’s Global Connection newspaper.

n marketing strategy News releases touting A&A Midwest’s involvement in the programme were published, helping spotlight the company as a green corporate citizen within the Las Vegas area. The company’s president and CEO, Scott Stolberg, has made numerous presentations in the community about the benefits of recycling. As a result of these activities, the company has received favorable TV, print and online coverage by Las Vegas area media. In addition, A&A Midwest has developed several helpful informational flyers educating consumers on metal recycling, metal theft and the benefits of remanufacturing. To download and view these publications, visit www.aamidwest.com/recycling. There are several important points to remember from A&A Midwest’s story: • Make yourself available to the media for ‘green’ stories. As a remanufacturer you
‘green’ company, but not really practising what you preach. It is a form of spin in which ‘green’ PR or ‘green’ marketing is deceptively used to promote the perception that an organization’s aims and policies are environmentally friendly. Whether it is to increase profits or gain political support, greenwashing may be used to manipulate popular opinion to support otherwise questionable aims. It is a hypocrisy that business customers and consumers will immediately recognize.

have the expertise to speak authoritatively on green practices. Often the media do not know who to contact for help with a story. • Publicize your ‘green’, sustainable practices. There are most likely things you are doing that the media are not aware of. So take the time to tell your story in a news release, customer newsletter and on your website. • Tell about your educational efforts. Develop educational materials that fit your business and make them available in person when you are out to visit customers or prospects. They should also be available for download on your website. • Avoid ‘greenwashing.’ Greenwashing is the dangerous practice of saying you are a
There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to ‘green’ marketing that everyone can adopt. The plan is going to be different for each individual business. The key factor is it should be unique and specific to your market and customers. Your target audience is always going to be asking the question: “What’s in it for me, today?” Here’s a helpful checklist as you put together your ‘green’ marketing strategy: • Determine your target audience • Determine your ‘green’ unique selling proposition • Develop your messaging • Tagline • Boilerplate • Mission or value statement • Review your current marketing initiatives – where can you implement the ‘green‘ message?

‘Green’ is not magic A note of caution about going ‘green’ is in order from author Gil Friend. In his book, ‘The Truth about Green Business’, Friend says ‘green’ is not a panacea. “Going for the ‘green’ – and even getting there – doesn’t guarantee business success. You still need great products and services, impeccable execution, and stellar customer communications – all the elements of which a great business depends.” To help automotive and heavy duty remanufacturers reach these ends, The Marx Group has developed a helpful exercise sheet that is designed to help any business stimulate their thinking about ‘green’ marketing. It includes ideas for putting together a marketing plan. You can download a copy at www.themarxgrp.com.

No stopping Roadlink After celebrating 30 years in business this month, one of Europe’s largest independent truck and trailer brake shoe remanufacturers has plans to increase its share of the market. Roadlink International intends to add other professionally remanufactured braking
components, including a wide range of commercial vehicle brake calipers, to its portfolio. Managing Director Keith Sedgley told ReMaTecNews: “Many vehicles and trailers on the road are still equipped with brake shoes so there is
still life in the brake shoe market, but CV brake calipers is the future of truck braking and we have the people and the equipment already in place to take advantage of the opportunities.” The brake shoe remanufacturing business operates from a dedicated unit on the main site at Willenhall in the West Midlands. The remanufacturing activity has developed alongside a parts distribution operation that also supplies OE and own-branded parts for trucks, trailers and buses. Roadlink International has grown into a company with a group annual turnover in excess of £8 million. Its range of customer accounts currently includes UK and European parts distributors and some vehicle manufacturers. Keith Sedgley says there is a developing awareness in the market about the high quality of HD reman parts. He adds that with increasing numbers of multinational companies getting involved in remanufacturing processes, there is a growing acceptance that reman parts are a realistic cost alternative to OE. “You need big volumes to justify an investment in plant and people, and core will always be a limiting factor,” he says. However, he believes the company has the necessary mechanisms in place to deliver such core when it is required.

Delphi adds to reman diesel injector range Delphi has announced the addition of six remanufactured diesel injectors and five diesel injection oil pumps to its diesel systems portfolio, covering almost 1.5 million lightduty Ford trucks (F-250 to F-550) on the road today. Four of the diesel injectors include a 7.3-liter Hydraulic Electronic Unit Injector (HEUI), representing the latest in diesel technology. During remanufacture, each injector is completely disassembled, cleaned and examined for wear and breakage, Delphi says. The nozzle, solenoid, screws, check balls,

O-rings, armature screw, NOP spring, shim and stop are replaced with 100 per cent new parts. The five new diesel injection oil pumps, which are geared to support each of the remanufactured injectors, supply high-pressure oil to the intensifier side of the HEUI injector. Each is tested for proper pressure and operating parameters to help ensure the pressure meets OE specifications. The pumps are manufactured with new seals and O-rings, then tested and inspected to ensure quality and durability.
Remy’s Remy International’s Electric Motor Division and the American VIA Motors have announced a joint agreement to supply powertrains for the VIA Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (eREV). VIA offers a full lineup of extendedrange electric trucks, vans and SUVs called VTRUX, each equipped with the company's eREV powertrain. The eREV powertrain enables the VTRUX to drive up to 40 miles in a full electric near zero-emission-mode achieving an equivalent 100 mpg, according to the company. “We are proud to enter this supply agreement with VIA. We believe integrating the Remy HVH motor into the VIA eREV powertrain will yield a system with unmatched levels of performance,” said Remy's Vice President, General Manager Global Hybrid Kevin Quinn.

APRA Europe
NEWS Meeting future demands To meet the challenges of a new era, APRAEurope must change the way we operate. This is not least the case with regard to our approach to political and organisational bodies. Equally, we must place considerable importance on our relationship with other associations involved in remanufacturing. One target, therefore, is to achieve a common understanding of how to develop the reman industry business in the face of the many challenges ahead. One major step is the enhanced cooperation between FIRM and APRA to which both reman associations are now committed. Between them the partnership between APRA and FIRM represents the clear majority
of the workforce in Europe’s remanufacturing industry and working closer together, based on mutual understanding of our respective memberships, can only benefit the entire reman industry. I’m confident that the new collaborative agreement between APRA and FIRM will not only strengthen our two associations but will also help move remanufacturing in Europe forward.
Official office To further strengthen our presence in Europe, on 1 June, APRA established an official APRA office in Europe. This step gives APRA better opportunities for supporting our members. The office will handle membership contacts in

When, in 1987, the European division of APRA was established by Bill Gager and Fernand Weiland we started out with around 15 members. Over the years, however, consolidation, change of ownership, mergers etc. have meant that we have lost some of our original members. APRA is extremely proud that out of the original members, five companies remain members of the European Division. These members are Denso (Europe), Elstock (Denmark), Autosupplies Ltd (UK), Remy (Europe), Van Rompaey (Belgium) and last but not least the Fraunhofer Society (Germany). Peter Bartel, APRA Europe’s new Chairman honoured these loyal members with a plaque at the cocktail reception during the symposium in Krakow.
European Expo in Krakow
The APRA Exhibition, which was part of the symposium in Krakow in April, was a great success and attracted more than 300 visitors, with 42 manufacturers and suppliers of components, test equipment and cores displaying their products. Worth noting was the fact that visitors not only came from Western and Eastern Europe but from across the world, which made the event successful and worth repeating. The final day of the symposium included a special tour of the Valeo remanufacturing plant in Czechowice, one and a half hours out of Krakow, “We’re grateful that Valeo agreed to open their plant to our members,” said APRA board member Jarek Gora, who helped to organise the visit. “We saw a well organised and highly efficient operation.”

Revitalising FIRM Extraordinary in several senses. That’s the story of FIRM’s three-day extraordinary general meeting in Istanbul in early May. The new board subsequently elected the President, Vice-President and Treasurer (who must all be engine remanufacturers) with the following result: • President: Mr. Philippe Maerten, Federauto, Belgium • Vice President: Mr. Emre Cicin, GMY, Turkey • Treasurer: Mr. Pierre Beurrier, FEDA, France Honorary President: Mr. Mike Lammel, VÖM, AT, was honoured for his long-standing, personal commitment to FIRM and its members – he is now FIRM’s first President of Honour. Congratulations Mike!
New membership campaign
From left to right: Mr. Lammel, Mr. Maerten and Mr. Emre Cicin.
First of all, we would like to thank Emre Cicin of GMY, our host, for having organised this perfect event. Emre not only managed the hotel reservations, booked tables in restaurants, arranged several visits to parts manufacturing facilities and engine remanufacturers, he also took us on a walk through Istanbul. Believe me, those members who did not attend the event really missed out. Thank you Emre. On the business side, FIRM’s extraordinary general meeting 2012 from 3-5 May was, indeed, extraordinary in terms of the association’s statutes. An additional (extraordinary) meeting had been necessary in the 4th quarter because in February FIRM had changed status to a legal unit under Belgian law in order to facilitate FIRM’s lobbying activities in Brussels (Belgian associations have a better chance to be heard within the EU). Accordingly, one of the items on the agenda was the establishment of a new board. Under the articles of association all ordinary member associations are entitled to nominate one board member and the following were duly elected:
• • • • • • • • •
Philippe Maerten, Federauto, Belgium Jean-Paul Borsten, Bovag, The Netherlands Günter Wolf, VMI, Germany Michel Vilatte, FEDA, France Lars Weide Olsson, FDC, Denmark Daniele Rossi, VSZ, Switzerland Mike Lammel, VÖM, Austria Sven Eriksson, MO-RE, Sweden Emre Can Cicin, GMY, Turkey.
As previously announced, FIRM needs to extend its membership beyond the national engine remanufacturing associations in Europe. So, as its first decision regarding a new membership campaign, the new board voted to bring in two additional membership groups: • Corporate members: firms and companies whose activities are linked to remanufacturing; • Associate members: non-European trade associations, other institutions and independent engine remanufacturers;

Volker Schittenhelm, with his long lasting relation to FIRM since 1992 as former representative of VMI and also secretary of FIRM in the mid- 2000nds and his actual engineering and consultancy office IMT, has undersigned the declaration of membership as 1st corporate member of FIRM! Existing FIRM members now have the responsibility and duty to put forward proposals to our secretary Filippo Martino and to actively contact and convince potential new members. The more members, the stronger the potential for successfully implementing the ‘new member campaign’, and other projects with greater focus on lobbying and PR.
FIRM and APRA join forces APRA, the other partner for the ReMaTec exhibitions, elected a new Chairman for its Europe Division in February. Peter Bartel’s open mindedness in terms of Europe’s reman industry working more closely together and his longstanding relations with FIRM in Clepa’s reman working groups bodes well for a future strategic alliance between FIRM and APRA’s European Division. and FIRM’s in Istanbul - approved reciprocal membership that can be expected to lead to closer ties between us and more focus on lobbying on behalf of the reman industry in Brussels. A very positive decision after a long but effective meeting! On Friday, we visited the impressive cylinder sleeve manufacturing facility of Federal Mogul, 150 km east of Istanbul in Sapanca, followed by lunch at Sapanca Lake, kindly hosted by Federal Mogul Sapanca. Afterwards, an engine remanufacturer from the GMY-group in Sakarya took us on a tour of his fully equipped and well organised workshop during which both sides took the opportunity to exchange engine reman experience and know-how. The next stop was the Federal Mogul piston and piston pin production facility in Izmit, followed by a visit to GMY member Sahin Rectifiye in Pendik/Istanbul. The social programme of the general assembly ended with a walking city tour from Taksim Square through one of the main shopping streets in the new part of Istanbul, followed by some of Istanbul’s highlights: the Galata Tower, Galata Bridge, the Egyptian bazaar, Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome and on Saturday evening, a boat trip on the Bosporus, which rounded-up an
extraordinary event in the extraordinary, impressive and breathtaking city of Istanbul. All in all, a most extraordinary extraordinary general meeting.

Jean-Paul Borsten of engine remanufacturers, Motorenfabriek de Sutter, has been elected Chairman of Bovag Revisiebedrijven, the Dutch engine remanufacturers association. He succeeds Henk Mannessen In his acceptance speech, Jean-Paul Borsten - third generation owner of Motorenfabriek de Sutter - vowed to capitalise on the ‘green’, sustainable public image of the reman industry and to improve technical and environmental training offers to Bovag’s members. In his last speech as Chairman, Mannessen stressed the importance of formulating a common vision for the future in the light of technical developments such as the electrification of drivetrains. He also expressed his concern about society’s lack of appreciation of the technical professions.
Members Bovag Board (from left to right): Thom de Boer, Marika Hollander-Eggens, Aart Koning, Jean-Paul Borsten, Ralf Steins and Hans Gerrits.
“This is impacting negatively on the number of qualified technicians getting into our workshops,” Mannesen said. In addition to Jean-Claude Borsten, three new members were elected to the Bovag board: Thom de Boer (Motoren Revisiebedrijf De Boer, Sneek), Aart Koning (Koning Technisch Bedrijf, Meppel/Emmen), and Hans Gerrits (Diesel Büchli, Harderwijk). With 70 Dutch remanufacturers as members, Bovag’s engine reman section is the smallest division of the Dutch Union of Garagists (Bovag). Recent activities of Bovag include the roll-out of the Erkend Duurzaam (Certified Sustainable) certificate programme for member companies to franchised car dealers, independent repair workshops, truck dealers and car washes. In future, the programme will be extended to Bovag’s reman members. “From other Bovag divisions where the programme is already in effect, we know that the certificate is well received by consumers, banks and governmental organisations alike,” says Bovag Revisiebedrijven Manager Hannie Tak.
Chip McClure to deliver keynote Charles ‘Chip’ McClure, Chairman, CEO and President of Meritor Inc., will deliver a keynote address during an October 2 conference on remanufacturing, sustainability and corporate responsibility. The conference, co-hosted by the Motor & Equipment Remanufacturers Association (MERA) and the Golisano Institute for Sustainability, will be held at the MSU Management Education Centre in Troy, Michigan. Dr. Nabil Nasr, Assistant Provost, Director of CIMS & Golisano Institute for Sustainability, Rochester Institute of Technology, will contribute to the agenda and give a presentation.
Cummins’ Zwicker appointed to MERA Shawn Zwicker, General Manager, ReCon Europe and Joint Ventures, Cummins Inc., has been elected to the Motor & Equipment Remanufacturers Association (MERA) Board of Directors. Zwicker has over 20 years of plant manufacturing experience with both original equipment and remanufacturing operations. Since joining the Cummins remanufacturing organisation, known as ReCon™, Zwicker has held a variety of leadership positions. These include Division Controller, Executive Director of Operations and Strategy, General Manager of International Operations, Leader of New Business Development, and most recently General Manager, ReCon™ Europe and Joint Ventures. Prior to re-joining Cummins in the ReCon™ organisation, he worked for Price Waterhouse Coopers as a principal consultant in the Cost Management and Operations Strategy practice. “Shawn brings valuable experience to the MERA Board of Directors,” said John Chalifoux, President and COO, MERA. “We look forward to working closely with him and his team at Cummins to advance the remanufacturing industry.”
VMI in reman campaign Following an extensive analysis of engine remanufacturing by VMI, Germany’s engine remanufacturers association, and the HTW University of Saarland, the two parties have developed a comparison between the advantages of ‘reman’ versus ‘new.’ The conclusions, which clearly favour reman, are now part of a new VMI campaign directed at the German media and the public. Pointing out that reman reduces average CO2
levels considerably,VMI has issued a logo and a flyer for members to promote the environmental-friendliness of reman to customers and local (and national) media.
Collective Support The Remanufacturing Group, a specialist branch of the successful aftermarket section within the UK’s Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, will hold its next meeting in London on July 3. High on the agenda will be proposals to help UK remanufacturing members support their international exporting ambitions through attendance at the ReMaTec2013 exhibition in Amsterdam. A small party of SMMT member companies took up the option at ReMaTec2011. One possibility that group members may consider for next year is a collective SMMT pavilion or showcase. Similar strategies have been employed by SMMT at trade exhibitions throughout the world.
FAR gets wider After launching the Federation of Automotive Remanufacturers (FAR) last month, the Federation of Engine Remanufacturers (FER) has embarked on the next phase of the FAR development plan. Promotional materials in the form of newsletters, booklets and mailshots have been developed and a programme to distribute, which will include social media networks, is being drawn up. Several new members have already been recruited, including reman rotating electrics supplier Autoelectro and reman aircon compressor supplier Compressortech. FER secretary Brian Ludford says interest generated following the recent Remanufacturing Renaissance conference has been significant.
