EDITOR’S LETTER ReMaTecNews Volume 11 – Number 5 – August 2011 ReMaTecNews, the only international news magazine dedicated to automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing worldwide, is an independent channel for news, views and developments within the remanufacturing industry.

You ain’t seen nothing yet! At ReMaTecNews’ annual Remanufacturer of the Year event in Amsterdam, we were honoured by the presence of Michael Cardone Jr. as our special guest and presenter of the award to the winner (Remy Automotive Europe). As co-founder and chairman of Cardone Industries, the world’s largest independent reman business, Michael Cardone Jr. has played a special role in our industry for more than 40 years – as an innovator, inspirer and driving force behind remanufacturing’s standing as an important component in the global automotive industry worldwide. In brief, he is a leader worth listening to. And that’s precisely what the audience did at the award ceremony during the ReMaTec2011 show. They listened and learned: about the long-term outlook for the industry, its potential and opportunities, about its benefits to society and the value to hundreds of millions of motorists across the world. All from someone who has dedicated his working life to remanufacturing. The message from Michael Cardone Jr. was clear. Granted, the industry faces challenges – who doesn’t? And yes, more can – and should – be done to promote the concept of remanufacturing, to strengthen the cohesion of the industry, to influence politicians, decision-makers and administrators whose decisions govern the motor industry – as well as impact on our environment. Above everything, however, the overriding message was loud and clear – remanufacturing is alive and kicking, as healthy as ever before and with a great future ahead. As he concluded: “You ain’t seen nothing yet!” Yes, the remanufacturing of automotive parts and engines as well as of other unrelated products and materials is in tune with our times. We live in an age of ever increasing focus on our environment, a scarcity of renewable resources and focus on saving, preserving and better utilization of those resources we already have. Is there a better way to achieve this than remanufacturing? Indeed, “you ain’t seen nothing yet.”

BU Drive adds new production plant German remanufacturer, BU Drive, recently celebrated the opening of a new production plant at its Schmitz+Krieger facility in Cologne. The company, which has seen significant expansion over the past few years, now boasts a new 1100 sq.m remanufacturing bay for car engines with a capacity of 60 to 80 engines a day. This is in addition to the existing capacity of 2000 engines per month on a single-shift basis for the original equipment market. “No other independent remanufacturer can match this capacity or has such modern machinery which includes a dry-ice blasting cubicle with a robot and an 11,000 liter tank for cleaning sealing surfaces,” BU Drive said in a statement. “This simple looking cubicle houses the most modern cleaning system ever deployed for remanufacturing, certainly for this size category.”

In addition, BU Drive’s Schmitz+Krieger’s arm in Cologne operates two other large cleaning machines for short blocks and cylinder heads respectively. These have a capacity for cleaning up to eight engines and two cylinder heads every ten minutes. “BU Drive Schmitz+Krieger is dedicated to achieving the highest standards for production and workflow and to us both quality assurance and cleanliness are key issues at every step of the process in the new plant,” said Managing Director Achim Birr. Besides the investments in the new bay, cleaning equipment and other tooling, BU Drive Schmitz+Krieger are currently building a new warehouse in the Cologne-Lovenicher industrial zone close to the Cologne plant. The building will cover 1250 sq. m.

NEWS FROM THE INDUSTRY

Clepa takes step towards resolving reman confusion The word ‘remanufacturing’ is understood differently by many different people. Now a significant step has been taken towards agreeing a common definition. Ahead of the ReMaTec2011 show in Amsterdam in June, CLEPA (The European Association of Automotive Suppliers), provided a new definition for remanufacturing which explicitly links reman to an industrial process. The definition says: “A remanufactured product fulfils a similar function to the original part. It is manufactured using the standardised process in line with specific technical specifications. The industrialised process incorporates defined core management standards. A remanufactured part is warranted as a new spare part.” The new definition is welcomed by MERA, the new US reman association, whose Chairman, Michael Cardone Jr., told ReMaTec-

Josef Frank, Director, CLEPA Aftermarket.

News: “This is an important move that I believe will be supported by American remanufacturers.” Emphasising that the definition is not intended to make life complicated for smaller

remanufacturers, Josef Frank, Director, CLEPA Aftermarket, said: “The definition is significant in that it establishes parameters for the quality of remanufactured products. Its aim is to clearly differentiate the remanufacturing of CLEPA members from ‘refurbished’, ‘rewashed’, ‘reused’ etc. Remanufacturing, for instance, is a sustainable development activity; it significantly contributes to CO2 and raw material savings, and has a positive impact on employment in the automotive industry. Products that are remanufactured according to an industrial process are safe and reliable.” CLEPA now intends to continue its efforts to raise its profile with government bodies and European institutions in order to highlight the benefits of remanufacturing and to help develop a favourable legislative framework for the remanufacturing industry.

Returning credibility to a famous name Remy Automotive Europe is Remanufacturer of the Year 2011

Philippe James (left) and William Schwarck, Chairman of the Remanufacturer of the Year panel of judges.

Philippe James, Remy Automotive Europe’s Managing Director has no hesitation when asked how he feels about receiving ReMaTecNews’ Remanufacturer of the Year award for 2011. “I see this as an award for the company as a whole – a recognition of the Remy team. You know, a company is people and everybody in our company deserves the award. So, it’s gratifying for everybody here - whether at the head office in Belgium or at the plants in Hungary and Tunisia, or at the Distribution Centres in Belgium and the UK. Our parent company in the US, of course, shares in this. In fact, I know that our American colleagues refer to the award when they talk to outsiders about our products.” Philippe James, who despite the Englishsounding surname, is a French national, has played a central role in

The judges’ decision A major and highly successful restructuring project, significant quality enhancements to product quality and a strong culture of innovation. Add to this a strong commitment to promoting the cause of remanufacturing and you have a worthy winner of ReMaTecNews’ Remanufacturer of the Year award, the most prestigious in the automotive remanufacturing industry. These were key considerations when the panel of judges of ReMaTecNews’ Remanufacturer of the Year award chose Remy Automotive Europe as the 2011 award

winner. A major player in remanufacturing of rotating electrics since the mid-1910s, Remy Automotive was awarded the prize in recognition of Remy’s achievements as a key promoter of quality in remanufacturing and as a force for innovation. “In a tight race between highly qualified nominees, this year’s award goes to a company with a long and honourable history in the field of automotive remanufacturing,” said William Schwarck, Editor-in-Chief of ReMaTecNews and Chairman of the panel of judges. Philippe James CV told ReMaTecNews in a lengthy conversation. “However, we have rebuilt the team and the morale across the company and, no less important, we have re-established our credibility in the market. Credibility is so important and I believe that we have brought credibility back to the business. I know that five years ago many in the industry questioned our future. This is clearly not the case anymore. They know that we’re specialists in rotating electrics, that we do our job properly, that we’re not in it for the short-term.”

Managing Director Remy Automotive Europe • Philippe James has thirty years’ experience in international business, mainly within automotive. • Before joining Remy Automotive Europe in 2006, he worked as an independent consultant specialising in turn-arounds. Prior to that he served as VP and General Manager for Honeywell Friction Materials Europe with four plants in Germany, France, and Spain (two) and two R/D centres. • From 1995 to 1999 Philippe James worked as Business Manager ‘General Market & Industry’ for Cables Pirelli S.A. Previous employment includes Compagnie Europeenne D’Accumulateurs, Corning France (Glass Group). • Philippe James is fluent in French, English, Portuguese and has knowledge of Italian, Spanish and German.

Pioneer Back in 1995, Remy in the US opened up operations in Europe by acquiring a Hungarian manufacturer of heavy duty starters and alternators in Mezökövesd. Three years later, Remy started remanufacturing starters and alternators for passenger cars through the acquisition of Lucas factories in the UK and two factories in Belgium and Tunisia. Remy then made a green field investment in 1999 and built a second plant in Miskolc, Hungary to remanufacture starters and alternators. This made Remy one of the first European companies to pioneer reman activities outside Western Europe. Since 2003, milestones in Remy Europe’s development have included the ISO/TS16949 certification of the Miskolc factory (the first reman plant in Europe to achieve this). Subsequently the site has obtained status as a centre of excellence and ‘best-in-class’ for remanufactured starters and alternators. Last year, Remy’s 650 strong workforce remanufactured 700,000 starters and alternators, an increase of 24 per cent on the previous year and a record in the company’s history. Concepts such as ‘excellence’ and ‘bestin-class’ have been, and remain, keywords in Philippe James’ approach to making Remy rotating electrics market leader. While having expanded into other areas – a new brake caliper catalogue at the end of 2010 is one example – the strategy remains

Volker Schittenhelm, representing FIRM and Fernand Weiland representing APRA. “Over the past years, Remy Automotive Europe has successfully implemented an extensive restructuring of its remanufacturing activities and, as a consequence, grown its reman business very substantially,” William Schwarck said. “In the process the company has contributed significantly to the awareness and reputation of remanufactured automotive products at a time when preservation of resources, protection of the environment and climate issues are rising to the top of the agenda.”

firmly rooted in rotating electrics. Although sales of calipers, racks and pumps etc. will continue to grow, the rotating electrics programme stays at the heart of the business.

Rotating electrics “Rotating electrics is definitely the core of our business. That’s what we specialise in and that’s where we want to be number one,” Philippe James says. “It’s difficult to be a spe-

cialist in everything and if you try, you finish up as a specialist of nothing. My philosophy is: yes, let’s add to the range, improve coverage, have all the marketing mix that supports customer growth. The target is to make Remy Europe the clear market leader in rotating electrics remanufacturing. And we’ll achieve this if we do our work properly, offer flexibility and Continued on page 10

turer, Cardone Industries, presented this year’s Remanufacturer of the Year award to Philippe James, Managing Director of Remy Automotive Europe, no further introduction was needed. A few years earlier, Cardone Industries of Philadelphia bought some of Remy’s assets in the UK and the two men were on familiar terms.

As the guest of honour at the awards ceremony during the ReMaTec2011 show in Amsterdam, Michael Cardone Jr., therefore, had no difficulty in supporting the panel of judges’ decision on the 2011 award. “Remy Automotive is an important player and a good choice and I congratulate them on the honour,” Cardone said. During a wide-ranging presentation during the ceremony, Michael Cardone Jr. expressed his strong confidence in the future of remanufacturing, using the phrase ‘You ain’t seen nothing yet!’ “We’re working in an industry with huge potential and one that offers very substantial benefits to the world,” he added. In his capacity as the first Chairman of the newly formed US remanufacturing association MERA, Michael Cardone Jr. also appealed to the entire reman industry to work together to promote remanufacturing as a key solution to some of the world’s environmental and resource problems, as well as a major provider of jobs in the automotive industry. The awards ceremony was part of the exhibitors’ reception on June 20 which took place at the ReMaTec2011 show in Amsterdam. The next edition of ReMaTecNews will contain a full interview with Michael Cardone Jr.

Continuation from page 9 present the right marketing package. We’re not there yet, but I’m confident that we’ll get there. Perhaps it’s ambitious, but without ambition we won’t achieve it. You know, the key is to have a clear strategy with clear goals and execute it correctly. I believe we have a good strategy and that we’re executing it well so that after the capital restructuring of the US parent company four years ago, we’re on target for growth.” As an OE supplier Remy has a foot in both market segments, i.e. OE and the independent market – both of which the company is committed to. Even so, Remy is experiencing solid sales growth to the large distribution chains and the aftermarket now accounts for 70 per cent of overall sales in Europe.

Logistics From his office in Heist-op-den-Berg, Belgium, where Remy Automotive Europe moved its

10:10

European headquarters three years ago, Philippe James sees logistics as one of the immediate challenges, not only for Remy but for the entire reman industry. “This is definitely an area where the industry has to put in a lot of effort,” he says. “I know that some new initiatives are coming on to the market over the next few years which will be very important to the industry. Many people are working on improving the product flow and improving ways to bring back the old cores from the consumer to the remanufacturer. We certainly are. It’s important to us.” About the reman industry’s prospects in general Philippe James is equally upbeat. “There is a growing confidence in remanufacturing,” he says. ”The environmental benefits are obvious – the CO2 balance is so much in favour of reman products compared to new. We have to keep reminding the market about this positive balance. Equally

important is the fact that remanufactured products are as good as new products and as the products become more complex reman is the answer to many of the market’s requirements. In the longer term, reman expertise is set to become increasingly important.

The future “And then there is a third point,” Philippe James says. “It’s almost classic but still essential. Reman is labour intensive – it’s a very local business and it creates and involves skilled local jobs. In general, it’s not something you can do 10,000 km away. This in itself means that in many ways remanufacturing is futureproof. And that’s why I’m a strong believer in the future of the reman industry. For these reasons and others I’m confident that political actors will increasingly turn towards remanufacturing. Now it’s the job of the industry to deliver these arguments to our politicians in no uncertain terms.”

Jef Verelst, Vice President Sales, Marketing and Distribution, Remy Automotive Europe on: Sales growth Over the past few years, Remy has achieved solid sales growth that has allowed us to build up a very strong market position in several countries. We intend to strengthen this further. At the same time, I see huge potential for further growth in some other key countries where we have not yet reached the market share that we should have as a leading reman-

part of me that believes we have to implement new strategies other than the ones that have brought us success over recent years. There will be always some specifics to implement relating to the region and as a consequence of the actions of other market players, but first of all, we will continue to strengthen our position as ‘the specialist’ in remanufacturing of starters and alternators.

Our target is to invest to further optimise in order to keep outperforming the competition on broad product range, best in class availability and competent field presence and to maintain high product and process quality. In this way, we will allow our customers to take advantage to grow their business further, creating a win-win together.

We have seen strong consolidation in some markets where some of our customers have been very successful in increasing their market shares, backed by our strong value position. I have also experienced that the concern about imported Far Eastern products, which we saw some years ago, has abated and that such products only affect a rather small part of the market leaving most of the market to high quality remanufactured products. To me this confirms why we have taken the correct decision to keep to our strategy for remanufacturing. I believe that we are right to focus on our core competence and not adopt business models that mix remanufacturing with lower quality imported products. In the final analysis, this will only create a negative image of remanufacturing.

Reman awareness In my opinion, all remanufacturing companies should contribute to spreading awareness about the benefits of reman products – in respect of consumers/society as well as in terms of political influence. I’m a strong believer in the benefits that remanufactured products bring to society in general.

ReMaTec2011 – Review

The opening of the ReMaTec2011 show. From left to right: Philippe Maerten, FIRM; Ids Boersma, Amsterdam RAI; Peter Larsen, APRA Europe; Niels Klarenbeek, ReMaTec2011.

ReMaTec2011 – a milestone If anyone questioned the vitality of the automotive remanufacturing industry, they would have done well to attend the sixth ReMaTec show in Amsterdam from June 19-21. As the automotive industry worldwide emerges from the economic crisis and the aftermath of the natural and nuclear disasters in Japan, ReMaTec2011 left little doubt as to the health of automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing. Across Hall 11 in the Amsterdam RAI exhibition complex, the atmosphere was one of bullish confidence, faith in the future and a belief that better times are ahead – for the industry as a whole as well as for the majority of exhibitors and visitors. One American visitor summed up the experience: “This is very interesting. We should have a show like this in the US.” Comments such as these, which refer specifically to the show’s combination of major, medium-sized and smaller players, emphasise one of the major strengths of the 2011 event: the coming together of the entire spectrum of reman activities, geographical as well as technical. In fact, no other reman exhibition in

recent times has brought together such a wide range of players from such different geographical locations: from Europe to the United States, from China to Japan, and from Korea and Taiwan to Russia – and from some of the world’s largest players such as Bosch, Valeo, Remy, Cummins and Meritor. Also present were the many smaller, more specialised remanufacturers and their suppliers. In addition, international automotive organisations such as APRA (Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association), FIRM (European Engine Rebuilders Federation), CLEPA (The European Automotive Suppliers Association) and FIGIEFA (International Federation of Independent Automotive Aftermarket Distributors) exhibited or participated in meetings, seminars and other activities. Even the newly formed remanufacturing association MERA (Motor and Equipment Remanufacturers Association) of America came across the Atlantic to observe. No wonder then that Ids Boersma, Managing Director, Exhibitions Amsterdam RAI, was able to open the show with the words: “Today we’re welcoming you to the largest and best edition of the ReMaTec show

so far. The quality and broad range of exhibitors is a clear demonstration of the show’s importance to the remanufacturing industry – an importance which I’m confident will increase as time goes by.”

Record numbers The words were borne out by the numbers. During the three-day event, 2,727 attendees from no less than 73 countries visited ReMaTec2011 – a 60 per cent increase on the previous show in 2009, making the show the busiest ever. The 156 exhibiting companies from 22 countries also represented an increase on previous years. “Such a significant rise in visitor levels is not just a triumph for the show, but for the whole industry,” said Niels Klarenbeek, Product Manager, ReMaTec2011. “This year tops all previous years. Exhibitors and visitors commented favourably on the show, and the atmosphere on the floor was simply buzzing. We are delighted that so many companies have already signed up for ReMaTec2013.” ReMaTec2013 will be held on 16-17-18 June 2013 at the Amsterdam RAI Convention Centre.

ReMaTec2011 – Review Turnout beyond expectations

Managing Director, Fred Vendrig (right), and his Automatic Choice team at the company’s automatic transmission seminar.

Automatic Choice celebrates its first ten years in business Dutch automatic transmission supplier, Automatic Choice, celebrated its tenth year’s birthday at ReMaTec2011 by organising one of its well-attended seminars which attracted more than 150 participants. Automatic Choice also used the opportunity to introduce a range of valve bodies for VW and Audi auto transmissions from the expanding range of remanufactured parts available from Netherlands-based VBX. “The valve bodies, all supplied through Automatic Choice Europe are more often than not an enhanced version of the original

Netherlands-based ACTRONICS reported a strong turnout from interested buyers - far beyond expectations. “I never thought that people would turn out on a Sunday - and on Father’s Day, too,” said director Leon Kleine Staarman. “We have been very busy,” he added. He was particularly impressed with the interest shown in the company’s latest diagnostic and test equipment. ACTRONICS is also a remanufacturer of automotive parts. Instrument clusters, throttle bodies and ignition distributors are included in the product range, which is exported from the Almelo plant to 18 different countries.

equipment. The end result is often better because the remanufactured parts are sleeved with a better quality aluminium, they are longer lasting and overall, the quality is better,” says VBX production manager Marc Aalderen. The VBX product range now includes over 150 references that cover the vehicle parc in US, Asia and Europe. The remanufacturer says it is particularly strong on replacements for auto transmissions originally manufactured by Mercedes and ZF.

Valeo rides the reman learning curve Valeo is planning to enter the ECU remanufacturing market as part of a much grander plan to expand its remanufacturing activities. It is understood that the ECU programme is well advanced and that the aim is to develop a middle range Valeo product line. According to aftermarket electrical sys-

while aluminium and copper costs continue to rise,” he says. “Reman becomes a more and more viable solution as long as you have access to the core.” Although the French-owned vehicle component and systems manufacturer is a major supplier of original equipment (OE) to vehicle manufacturers and is a major aftermarket player, its share of the remanufacturing market lags behind those of big automotive rival such as Bosch, especially when compared to its overall position as an OE supplier.

Key benefits

tems Product Line Director Pierre Bollee, the company sees the expansion of remanufacturing facilities as a major growth opportunity: “Remanufacturing is a key lever in helping us to meet our customer expectations in terms of cost. It is efficient with respect to energy and metal consumption - particularly

12 l ReMaTecNews

The company has a strong reman presence in product areas such as transmissions, alternators and has achieved rapid growth in sales of air compressors. However, the move into ECUs is indicative of the reman profit opportunities expected to emerge from the explosion of components driven by electronics expected over the next few years. Pierre Bollee believes that one of the key benefits to increasing the company’s commitment to remanufacturing is the opportunity to improve its OE production techniques and drive down its developmental costs:

“We are learning more about how to manufacture products so that they can be remanufactured more easily. For example, use a screw rather than a rivet. We are also discovering more about component failure. Where products inside have a parallel life, there is no need to have a diode that has a lifetime of 15 years if there is another product in there with a lifetime of only three years. It’s a waste of money.” From a product developmental perspective, remanufacturing offers opportunities to deliver real solutions to OE manufacturers faster, at far less cost: “It is no secret that last year we were able to bring to Ford a reman solution for a Denso designed alternator with an early failure problem. We achieved a cost saving on the replacement unit of up to 15 per cent.” He agrees that many consumers have yet to come to terms with ‘green solutions’, but adds: “Although they may not know enough about green solutions, sooner or later, the final user will demand green reman prods, not just based on cost but on moral grounds.” Valeo aims to be able to respond with a few more answers.

ReMaTec2011 – Review ERA ten years old ERA, the Belgian supplier of remanufactured steering racks, steering pumps, air conditioning compressors and brake calipers, had cause for a double celebration at ReMaTec2011. Not only could this dynamic company look back with satisfaction on its progress since its founding in 2001 – ERA also introduced a new, impressive stand at the exhibition. “Our stand has a central tower with six arms, each of which holds a display representing a different product group. We had looked forward to demonstrating our products and were very pleased with the way it worked at ReMaTec,” said Managing Director Stefaan Vandenbussche. ERA presented five product groups, including the recently introduced product group EPS steering columns.

Cleaning up opportunity

Frank Jürgens succeeds Theo Loecken at LuK

Visitors to the Kyzen stand discovered an unexpected answer to some of their many core cleaning problems. It was the Belgium-based chemical cleaning solutions supplier’s first ReMaTec show but its range of products were an immediate hit with remanufacturers, says technical manager for Europe Serge Tuerlings.

After many years a Plant Manager at LuK Unna GmbH, Theo Loecken, a well-known industry figure, used ReMaTec2011 to introduce his successor, Frank Jürgens, 43. Originally a locksmith, Frank Jürgens became a Mechanical Engineer in 1994 and then joined the LuK Group at its clutch, power steering and alternator pulley plant in Unna. After a five year stint with a sister company in the Shaeffler Group, he returned to LuK Unna for another two years as Department Leader for Technical Planning, Quality Assurance and Maintenance. From 2002 to 2007 Frank Jürgens worked as Plant Manager for LuK Truckparts before moving to the UK to work for LuK Sheffield Ltd. as Managing Director. In April 2011 he was appointed Plant Manager at LuK Unna GmbH & Co. KG. “My main focus is to increase the remanufacturing business at LuK Unna GmbH & Co. KG for our current production of clutches and clutch disks, power steering pumps and over-

He says that one product in particular grabbed people’s attention: “Metalnox M6310 seems to be the answer for a lot of remanufacturers with similar problems. Where the component has a combination of metals, it seems that many remanufacturers were using two or more solutions because they were having little success with a single product.” “Our product is designed for cleaning dry lube, oils, waxes and many other contaminants, including greases. We are confident that it will do the job. If only we could have brought more product with us, I am sure we would have sold it all here today,” he added.

ReMaTec2011 – Review

Bold statement of intent Meritor marked its debut at the ReMaTec show with a stand designed to demonstrate its commitment to the remanufacturing cause.

“It was important to build a stand like this so that visitors could see that we take the remanufacturing business as seriously as we do the OE business, says Europe, Asia and Pacific Director of Communications Malte Raddatz. The stand compared favourably with the company’s last exhibition at Automechanika and European remanufacturing manager Ian Buxcey hopes that core suppliers will get the message that Meritor is in search of quality core to support its determination to develop its heavy duty product range. “Players in the core market have not traditionally focused on the heavy duty core

A familiar face returns For many years a familiar face around European automotive exhibitions as export manager for Alto Products Corp. in Alabama, US, Michael ‘Mike’ Halston returned to the European transmission scene as Product Development Manager for GFX. In its debut at the ReMaTec2011 exhibition, the US/Asian GFX with offices in Taiwan, Beijing, Shanghai and Korea presented a broad range of hard parts, bands, filters, chains, pistons, pump gears and components, solenoids etc. Mike Halston, an automatic transmisison veteran of over 40 years, joined GFX earlier this year after serving many years with Alto. Testing time for remanufacturers A distribution agreement between Netherlands-based starter/alternator wholesaler Robarcko and Polish test equipment manufacturer Konceptis should give remanufactur-

ers, service bays and training centres throughout western Europe access to test equipment that both improves workshop efficiency and saves on investment costs. Seen for the first time at the ReMaTec show, the new regulator tester will be available from the end of July 2011. Konceptis says that the unit - which features a com connection - is capable of testing any starter or alternator from the old to the very latest generation. “It is compatible with almost any test bench and when added to an ageing test bench, it not only delivers all of the testing capacity required, but can save the cost of an upgrade,” says Konceptis.

products. We have to educate them, demonstrate that there is a good business and a good market in heavy duty core.”

Engine development plan A major UK core broker plans to introduce a new engine product services development programme in a bid to strengthen quality standards and enhance sales support. “We already have a similar structure in place for our drive systems and suspension parts,” says Premier Components UK’s new Managing Director Danny Edwards. “They have been successful. It’s time to increase our technical support on the engine side.” Edwards says the majority of engine manufacturers are now looking for long block assemblies. “The failure of the engine itself, versus the failure of the individual parts doesn’t usually coincide. Therefore, if the engine fails but the fuel injection equipment is ok, why does the remanufacturer want to buy a replacement with remanufactured fuel injection equipment included?”

MD, Danny Edwards (left) with owner Mark Garrison.

“The new programme will focus on buying in engine assemblies, removing the injectors and the fuel pumps and other commodities. The move follows recent user trends in core demand,” he adds.

Westwood ho! Engine remanufacturers turned out in force at the Westwood Cylinder Liners stand, which featured a completely refurbished Formula Ford 1986 Van Diemen RF86. It is equipped with a 1986 remanufactured Cross Flow engine and sitting in the car is Managing Director Duncan Andrews, who plans to take it hill racing later this year. Sales Manager Scott Edwards is on the left. Westwood specialises in small batch production of engine cylinder liners for engine remanufacturers and rebuilders in automotive, marine and industrial environments. The ReMaTec show was chosen to announce a move into supplying Ductile Liners from the US, given the growing demand for more powerful race engines, which require this type of technology.

Hybrids point to big reman future The German OE automotive parts manufacturer and remanufacturing giant ZF is hoping to cash in on increased demand for remanufactured parts generated by expanding hybrid vehicle programmes being developed by the major vehicle builders. ZF main board member Hans-Peter Bach told ReMaTecNews at the ReMaTec Show: “The electric part of the hybrid engine is very expensive. It doubles the cost of the transmission, for example. I think this will become a significant part of our future business,” he said. “Hybrid development is driven by governments who want the combustion engines out of the cities. Therefore, the hybrid is the

response and this will be a future market for us.” On the stand, ZF was promoting its remanufactured automatic and manual transmissions ranges for passenger cars and commercial vehicles, as well as torque converters and clutches. Hans-Peter Bach believes the market for remanufacturing automotive products in general is becoming more receptive, but as the pace of parts generation change increases, he expects demand to increase even faster: “It will mean parts are much faster out of production than in earlier times. It is this that will make remanufacturing more and more important.”

Partnership proposals from Caterpillar in Europe Caterpillar plans to expand its European remanufacturing and components division by developing partnerships with leading automotive manufacturers and suppliers. The aim is to provide a menu of remanufacturing services and allow partners to choose their own level of commitment. The strategy is based on a successful model in the US, where the company has worked with vehicle manufacturers such as Navistar. It is keen to replicate the model in Europe and perhaps throughout Asia. Caterpillar says the service can include management of core collection and distribution as well as providing the technology to develop the final remanufactured products. We will be saying to potential partners: “Let’s look at the range of products you deal with in your parts business, the core return element, the technologies, the processes involved, the marketing and let’s work together,” said Director and Facility Manager Matt Bulley who took over the role in

September of last year. Caterpillar has already worked on reman projects with Scania and Land Rover and has a strong pedigree when it comes to remanufacturing components such as engines, transmissions, starter motors, torque converters and hydraulic pumps for automotive, plant and industrial applications. Its acquisition of French remanufacturing specialist Eurenov in 2007, gave Caterpillar greater access to the European automotive and industrial engine and transmission remanufacturing market, including business with original equipment suppliers. Its remanufacturing plants in France and Poland are involved in some of the more high variety product work, while its large engine and defence related business operates from Shrewsbury in the UK. Matt Bulley says that Caterpillar has long experience and a good record when dealing with core management and remanufacturing processes in general: “It makes good business sense for companies to be able to exert greater

control over this aspect of the replacement parts market and by helping them to win, we win,” he adds.

New at ReMaTecNews’ sales department

US remanufacturers put pressure on lawmakers

With effect from August 1, ReMaTecNews has appointed Eva Barten, 36, Sales Manager at ReMaTecNews with responsibility for advertising sales for the magazine and its associated online activities. Previously Eva Barten worked with advertising sales for RAI Langfords, the publisher of ReMaTecNews, which publishes a number of trade magazines in The Netherlands. These include titles in the food and beverage and graphic segments as well as in the automotive and related industries. “We’re continuously striving to improve the magazine across the board,” said Luuk Aleva, ReMaTecNews’ publisher. “This, of course, includes the advertising side and our services to advertisers. Eva’s appointment is part of our ongoing efforts to raise the bar.” In addition to her hobby, horse riding on the beach, Eva appreciates good food and a good glass of wine. She is not without knowledge of the car industry either. “In particular, I’m fond of classic cars,” she says.

In keeping with its stated intention of informing government bodies and lawmakers about the benefits of remanufacturing, MEMA, the US automotive parts association and its reman affiliate, MERA, recently met with a number of influential legislators and officials in the important automotive state of Michigan. At a reception with exhibits showcasing the latest fuel efficient and safety technologies, exhibitors included Affinia Group, Aisin, BorgWarner, Bosch, Cooper-Standard, Delphi, Denso, Eaton Corporation, Federal-Mogul Corp., Gentex, Magna, Meritor and Yazaki. Concurrently Bob McKenna, MERA President and COO John Chalifoux met with key representatives of Gov. Rick Synder’s office to discuss ways the administration and the supplier industry can work together. “MERA members were very supportive of this event, our new association’s initial education and outreach effort at state level,” commented Chalifoux. “We were very pleased with the level of dialogue and look forward to working with state officials to raise awareness of the value of remanufactured components and exchanging information on issues important to the supplier community.”

Eva Barten, new Sales Manager at ReMaTecNews.

“I know remanufactured components keep many classic cars running. I now look forward to meeting some of the remanufacturers that makes this possible. For advertising please contact me. My phone is +31 (0)20 5042800. From US and Canada phone 011 31 205042800. Or send an e-mail to advertising@rematecnews.com.”

Caterpillar opens Singapore remanufacturing facility Caterpillar Inc. recently opened a new remanufacturing facility in Singapore. “The 20,000 square meter (215,278 square foot) building will serve as the regional source for remanufactured major components for large off-highway trucks and other mining equipment, including engines, transmissions, final drives and torque converters,” the company said. “This new Singapore facility will expand our capability to provide unmatched customer support to the mining industry of Asia,” said Greg Folley, Caterpillar Vice President with responsibility for the Remanufacturing & Components Division. “Remanufacturing is an

attractive, growing and sustainable industry. Our investment here is another illustration of Caterpillar’s commitment to customers and sustainable development in Asia. “Cat Reman makes one of the greatest contributions to sustainable development by keeping nonrenewable resources in circulation for multiple lifetimes,” said Frank Li, AsiaPacific General Manager for Caterpillar’s Remanufacturing & Components Division. “Sustainability is also built into the Singapore facility itself through a number of features that will have a positive environmental impact.”

New guide from Guyson International Guyson International in the UK, a leading industrial finishing equipment manufacturer, has announced its new ‘Product Information Guide’ to assist specifiers, purchasing departments and anyone having to purchase surface finishing equipment. Through an eight page product guide, Guyson is seeking to inform the market of the potential usage for its blast finishing, spray washing and ultrasonic cleaning equipment and showcase their range of suitable products. The guide is available free to existing and prospective customers from the Guyson Customer Service Department.

Bosch invests a further $557 million in India Germany’s automotive giant Robert Bosch is intending to invest $557 million in a new auto-parts factory in Chennai in India for the rapidly growing Indian market. Bosch expects to gain considerably from India’s booming automobile sector which has grown by some 30 per cent over the past year and the higher purchasing power of India’s 350-million strong middle-class population. “Over the past decade, our sales in India have increased more than fivefold and we expect this growth trend to continue,” Bernd Bohr, Chairman of the Bosch Automotive Group, told a recent press conference. “Extending its presence in India and China, the world’s two fastest-growing major economies, will also help Bosch reduce dependence on its traditional strongholds of Europe and the U.S.,” the company says. “While Bosch recorded growth in several of the world’s regions last year, the most impressive development was in Asia. For the first time ever our sales in the region surpassed €10 billion (in 2010) and accounted for 23 per cent of our worldwide sales,” Mr. Bohr said. Bosch, which currently employs a workforce of 22,500 in India, plans to hire a further 6,000-6,500 people as part of the expansion.

springs,” says Malcolm Short, LuK’s technical services manager in the UK. “The kit also contains a Dial Test Indicator that accurately measures the rock in the

secondary mass. In actual fact it tests the bearing between the primary and the secondary mass and we provide the data the garages need in order to determine whether to replace the dual mass or not.” Ross Barnes adds that sales of SAC core have gone up, steadily since the tool went on the market. “It costs less than £300 and soon every reputable garage will have one. When you bear in mind that around 30 per cent of vehicles on the road have an SAC fitted with a DMF, this tool will make quite a difference to core suppliers and clutch remanufacturers in the future, too.”

no iro Duc w n l tile av ine ai rs la bl e

The English clutch core supplier Autoparts UK attributes increased sales of core for selfadjusting clutches (SAC) to a piece of diagnostic kit available through German clutch manufacturer LuK. “Rebuilders were reluctant to get involved with self adjusters because they say there are problems associated with Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) technology. Basically, if the garages fit a clutch and the problem is with the DMF, they get too many warranties back. They have supplied a perfectly good remanufactured clutch, but if there is a problem with the DMF the clutch fails,” says Director Ross Barnes. “Since the tool was introduced, garages have been able to determine whether or not the clutch is the problem.“ LuK introduced its DMF Testing Tool just over two years ago. It was developed in association with tools manufacturer Sykes Pickavant. “It tests the basic functions of the DMF. It gives the garage a good indication of whether it has got a worn flywheel or not. It measures rotational free play between the two large arc

Future reman opportunities

Inside the Range Rover Evoque The smallest, lightest and most aerodynamically efficient Range Rover product of all, time, the Evoque that was first presented at the Paris Motor Show last year has quite a bit of responsibility hanging from its shoulders to bring the successful luxury SUV brand in line with the current Zeitgeist. We look at what’s underneath.

Even though Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has been divorced from Ford and taken under the wings of Indian conglomerate Tata for a couple of years now, there’s still quite a bit of Blue Oval componentry underneath; for instance both the diesel and petrol-fueled engines. Structurally, the Evoque is based on an adaptation of the existing Freelander platform albeit with detailed modifications to make it lighter and more agile: a mixture of high strength and ultra high strength steels clothed in aluminium for bonnet and roof panels while the front wings and tailgate are plastic. All this helps bring the weight to 1.595-1.700 kg depending on the exact model: stout for a compact car, but modest for a Land Rover product all the same. The Evoque will be available as a five-door and a three-door ‘coupé’ sporting a slightly lower roofline and a similarly slightly higher price tag. Propulsion is courtesy of four-cylinder engines exclusively: a new, 240 PS-DIN tur-

bocharged, direct-injected 2.0 litre petrol engine and a 2.2 litre common rail diesel that comes in 150 and 190 PS-DIN variants. Of the latter, the most frugal version dips under the 130 g/km CO2 barrier by way of deleting the 4WD, which also makes it the first Land Rover product that’s driven on just two wheels! Camshafts are being supplied by ThyssenKrupp, other valve actuation parts of the twin independent variable variable valve timing gear come from local supplier Eaton while anti-friction bearings by Fag and Ina help powertrain efficiency. The engines are mated with either a six-speed manual gearbox (combined with a start/stop system) or the latest generation Aisin-Warner AWF-21 six speed automatic transmission. The propshaft on 4WD models is courtesy of GKN Driveline while several chassis components are supplied by ZF Friedrichshafen. On high specification models, BWI Group’s (formerly Delphi Brakes and Suspension) Magneride semi-active

✍ By Eric van Spelde, Technical Writer magneto-rheological suspension system is being employed to give the smallest of Range Rovers the luxury ride experience that the ‘full fat’ Range Rover in particular is renowned for while retaining the agility and tautness expected by keen drivers who might come from a small coupé like the Audi TT or even a premium small hatchback like the Mini.

BMW goes FWD Despite having just launched a new 1-series on a rear-wheel drive platform, BMW will -as often alluded to and (in some quarters) feared – switch to the standard issue transverse front wheel drive configuration for their smallest cars in due course. As soon as 2013/14, new 1-series variants will be built on the UKL (for Untere KLasse) 1 platform that underpins the next-generation Mini hatchback (codenamed F56) which is planned to replace the current model in 2013. This platform allows for both FWD and AWD variants and will form the basis of an MPV called the Family Activity Sports Tourer (FAST), a CAT (Compact Activity Tourer) and a small commuter car that’s named JOY for the time being. As of yet, it’s unclear whether these will be branded as 1-series BMWs. Engines will be the three- and four cylinder variants (both petrol and diesel) of the new ‘modular’ family that we introduced on these pages earlier, for all of the above. Why are we telling you this? Simple: BMW does not abandon their rear wheel drive, bespoke-platform strategy just for the sake of a couple of grams of CO2 per car. If it gets its way, the UKL 1 platform will underpin a million cars rolling off the assembly lines every year, with very high commonality on a system and component level. Now if that doesn’t represent some serious aftermarket opportunities.

Chairman, Apra Europe APRA has been part of remanufacturing for 70 years now and we have existed in Europe for more than 20. Nevertheless, an association focusing exclusively on remanufacturing has never been more important than now. In fact, the many environmental challenges we face today make remanufacturing more important than ever before. There are, therefore, many reasons why reman should be our preferred choice when talking automotive parts. In the face of the many challenges to remanufacturers, we at APRA Europe, of course, realise the need to adjust and

In his response William Schwarck said:

✍ By Peter Larsen,

“We are both moved and grateful for the honour. It has been a pleasure, but also a challenge, to work with the automotive remanufacturing community at a time, when the industry is gaining increasing importance in terms of the environment, value for money and preservation of resources. We hope that the magazine, in its own way, has contributed a little to strengthening automotive remanufacturing’s identity.”

adapt to the times. First of all, we have to show greater presence and defend our position as the prime organisation for parts remanufacturers. We must extend our political influence and equally, focus on the lifelong education of our members. Because the technology and design of modern cars makes it increasingly difficult to remanufacture certain parts, this will remain a focus for APRA Europe. To become more visible, to put more focus on us and our mission, we have designed a new logo that emphasises our position and message. The new logo is available to all our members and can/should be used on e-mails and websites to help spread the true message of remanufacturing. If you want to use the logo please contact Gregor Schlingschröder via e-mail gregor@coemarketing.de. He will then e-mail the file to you – and of course it’s free of charge!

ReMaTec2011 – a thanks As one of RAI’s two partners in the ReMaTec exhibition (together with APRA), FIRM wishes to thank the show’s organisers and the ReMaTec project team headed up by Niels Klarenbeek for their successful efforts to move the show forward. The 2011 event was clearly a success and now the challenge is to sustain the progress. ‘After the show is before the show’ and we must now work hard to maintain the show’s standards and even exceed them. ”With regard to the number and quality level of exhibitors, the integrated theatre and the seminar/meeting programme and the number of attending organisations/ associations, ReMaTec2011 reached a remarkable professional level,” FIRM President Philippe Maerten says. “It is now our responsibility to keep the big players and win over the OEs on one side without forgetting the interests and challenges of the IAM with its workshops, sparepart manufacturers and dealers,” added Mike Lammel, Past-President of FIRM. “We must do this in order to demonstrate to the public, end users and Europe’s politicians that reman-

Schittenhelm sets up reman consultancy Remanufacturers and reman related businesses can call on a new consultancy established by Volker Schittenhelm, who for many years was day-to-day manager of VMI, Germany’s engine rebuilder association. A long-term member of the Board of FIRM – and a member of the ReMaTec exhibition committee – Volker Schittenhelm has huge experience with technical issues concerning engine remanufacturing. He will apply this experience at the new consultancy, IMT, which offers a broad range of services to the industry. These services will provide highly specialised advice within the field of engine failure, including engine failure analysis, expert reports, avoiding legal action, complaint management and coordination with lawyers. “I believe that there is a need for specialised advice in situations where two parties disagree about the causes of engine failures in connection with repairs,” Volker Schittenhelm told ReMaTecNews. “All too often disputes end up in court at great cost to all involved because of a lack of in-depth knowledge about the real issues. With my background in the industry I believe that in many of these

cases specialised knowledge of the technical aspects can be of immense value.”

Other services In addition to legal expertise, IMT will offer a range of services for remanufacturers, includ-

ing strategic consulting, sales support, operations analysis, target group analysis and technical reman issues. IMT will also provide advice on events, fairs, open house days, as well as PR, editorial texts and website maintenance. A mechanical engineer by profession, Volker Schittenhelm – who is a member of the jury for the Remanufacturer of the Year award – will be responsible for the content of the regular FIRM pages in ReMaTecNews. Based in Cologne, Germany, Volker Schittenhelm’s IMT consultancy is now up and running.
