Britain’s famous motor museum in Beaulieu south of London owned an old dragster that had not been fired up for close to 50 years. A group of enthusiasts supported by remanufacturing specialists helped to bring the dragster back to its former glory.
After half a century renowned Danish reman machine maker, AMC-Schou went bankrupt in 2011. Now the company that used to enjoy world-wide sales, has been saved by a Chinese entrepreneur. From now on the company will base its production in China.

Throwaway culture – an alternative
ReMaTecNews, the only international news magazine and website dedicated to automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing worldwide, is an independent channel for news, views and developments within the remanufacturing industry. Few are unfamiliar with the ‘throwaway’ culture of recent years. In fact, almost everybody reading these lines will have felt a pang of guilt when discarding something that was new and useful only a short while ago. “It’s not worth repairing. It will cost as much as a new (kitchen machines, tools, dishwashers, electrical appliances, computer gadgets, etc.) is an all too common argument. We have gotten used to it, not least because, sadly, it makes some commercial sense – at least in the narrowest meaning of the words. I was reflecting on this recently while watching a team of Polish craftsmen at work on my home. On a number of occasions they found items that had seen better days but were otherwise useful enough – except that a part had broken making them unfit for use. Once again, the immediate instinct was “Throw it out. We’ll buy another one.” But not for the craftsmen. “Why throw it out. We can repair it” they responded – and proceeded to do the job. The result? Considerable savings across a number of items. Saving time needed to go and look for ‘new’ products. The satisfaction in knowing that you had contributed in a small way to preserving the planet’s resources. This is really what remanufacturing is all about. Taking time to maintain and preserve what you have rather than going out and buying ‘new’. And this, again, raises questions in one’s mind as to whether discarding something always makes sense – or whether it’s just a convenient short term solution. As millions of people around the world are taking a new approach to these issues, it’s clear that the foundation for promoting reman has rarely, if ever, been firmer. This edition of ReMaTecNews exemplifies some areas in which remanufacturers can successfully exploit their skills. There are many others. Make use of them to inspire others to go the reman way. In a small way, the world might even become a better place.

Martin Detzen in memoriam It’s with great sadness that ReMaTecNews has learned about the death of Martin Detzen, founder and former owner of MD Rebuilt in Illingen, Germany. Over a quarter of a century Martin Detzen turned MD Rebuilt into a highly respected remanufacturing business with locations in Germany and Hungary. Earlier this year, he sold MD Rebuilt to a partnership consisting of Jens Lindholm of Powermax in Denmark and Hella, the large German supplier of light systems and vehicle electronics. Martin Detzen who received ReMaTecNews’ Remanufacturer of the Year in 2008, felt unwell after a game of tennis and died in hospital on September 8.
His successor, Jens Lindholm, expressed the feelings of many in the industry in the following manner: ”It’s difficult to understand that Martin Detzen is no longer with us. With Martin’s death we have not only lost the founder of MD Rebuilt, but also a good and longstanding friend. Martin initially started in the reman industry back in the late 70 and by virtue of well-developed entrepreneurial skills and a lot of hard work, he succeeded in building the company, which became his life work. Daily life will not be the same without Martin. We shall all miss him.”
UK praise for reman summit ‘A huge success!’ These are the words used by UK reman consultancy, the Centre for Reuse and Recovery (CRR), to describe the recent Remanufacturing Summit 2012 in Bayreuth Germany. “We would like to congratulate the organisers of the summit for hosting an excellent conference to support the remanufacturing industry,” said a CRR representative. “This event showcased the best of remanufacturing, bringing together industry and science and was attended by over 120 delegates from around the globe including the UK, EU, USA, China, Japan and Australia,” said Adrian Chapman who represented CRR in Bayreuth. “It was great to see such a mix of organisations and areas represented. It really helped catalyse discussions and added an extra dimension to the event,“ he added.

n Europe’s racetracks Being a champion driver in the fast-paced world of truck racing means you have to be open minded, committed and tough. Ellen Lohr, a German racing superstar with 25-years behind her in motor racing, is all of these things. She is also a dedicated proponent of remanufacturing. In fact, during the long FIA season, the European truck racing championship, Lohr is totally dependent on remanufactured brakes in her five-ton Mercedes truck, which she powers along Europe’s racetracks in competition with the best male drivers the sport can muster. Indeed, truck racing is one of the few sports where men and women compete directly against each other. In comparison with the heroes of Formula One, the stars of truck racing belong to a more anonymous class. Nevertheless, the sport attracts a larger audience than its smaller and faster cousin. Over the past race season, 500 thousand truck-loving fans and

In the final three races of this year, however, a new streamer has embellished the front of Lohr’s racing truck – that of ReMaTecNews – the magazine that in September awarded Meritor its coveted Remanufacturer of the Year award. This meets with Ellen Lohr’s full approval. Over the past few years, Lohr, one of Germany’s most accomplished female drivers, has become an ardent supporter of remanufactured automotive and heavy-duty parts. This may be surprising to some, as race drivers’ lives, in some situations, depend on their brakes. “These championships are highly professional so you might think that we only use new parts,” Ellen Lohr says. “But we have budgets too, and we have found that remanufactured brakes are very competitive in both
‘We have found that remanufactured brakes are very competitive in both quality and price’ their families attended these events – clear evidence of motor enthusiasts’ fascination with huge vehicles that race at 160 kph and are capable of doing 240 kph. Equally impressive is the trucks’ ability to accelerate from zero to 160 in 2.8 seconds. As is the tradition in all types of motor sport, the trucks are emblazoned with the

Today, I am 100% behind remanufactured parts.” Having won her first German Touring Car Masters in 1992 on the Hockenheim Ring,

Lohr has since notched up a stellar CV. Referred to by some as the Grand Dame of German Motorsport, Ellen Lohr has been a participant in numerous high-profile events in both Formula Ford and Formula 3, as well as numerous rallies including at Dakar. She has raced professionally since 1991, been a factory driver for Mercedes for many years and established a nation-wide reputation as a sports commentator and presenter on German television. Asked about the key requirements for successful race truck drivers, Lohr told ReMaTecNews: “A lot of experience, the ability to absorb new information quickly, take new ideas on board and being open-minded and tough.” Sounds like a good basis to judge the benefits of remanufactured parts in racing – and elsewhere.

Bringing motor sport h Vehicle-reman is not just for automotive and HD remanufacturing. Thousands of owners of veteran cars across the world are dependent on remanufacturing for keeping their prized possessions up and running. One English group of enthusiasts even gave new life to Europe’s first dragster with a fusion of remanufacturing, restoration and custom made parts. In this article ReMaTecNews explains how. By Brian Taylor Restoring an historic vehicle involves making some important decisions about the components and processes used during its re-birth. Certainly, where possible, restoring existing components is vital to retain the historic integrity of the vehicle. This involves stripping down sub-assemblies, carefully cleaning all components, sometimes crack testing them, replacing worn items like seals and bearings, reassembling and testing; typical remanufacturing processes. With Sydney Allard’s 1961 Allard Chrysler owned by the UK’s renowned National Motor Museum in Beaulieu, Hampshire, UK, the restorers had further issues to consider. On
anyway with many of the original parts manufacturers no longer in existence), they should build an engine that looked exactly the same on the outside but be much tougher on the inside. This would have the advantage of running more exotic fuels, producing a dramatic audio visual effect that would compensate for not being able to burn rubber and race the car. The museum would then have an exciting, cost-effective, working exhibit with the right credentials.
Engine So the first thing required was an engine; a 354 cubic inch Chrysler Hemi V8 of the right
‘Reman is not just about being green, it is also about preserving history’ display in the museum since the mid-1980s it looked complete. But take off the cowlings and it had no engine and what was left of the drivetrain was in very bad condition. However, it was in ‘original’ condition, being un-raced or modified since it was retired in 1964. After much consideration, the Allard Chrysler Action Group (ACAG – a group approved by the museum to restore the dragster) recommended that it should not be updated to race again. Its ‘original’ status was considered sacrosanct. Furthermore, rather than try to build a replacement engine that completely replicated the original 1961 unit (something that would not have been possible
vintage. The ACAG chose American nostalgia engine specialist Booth-Arons of Berkley, Michigan to recreate it. Having an American builder made it easier to source the base unit and involve American parts suppliers in the project. They found a 1956 vintage unit and the task was to convert this into a modern race engine that replicated the look of that in Sydney Allard’s original dragster. The sourced engine was completely disassembled and, thankfully, it was discovered that it had a standard bore and crank. The head surfaces were decked and made parallel so that everything was equalled out and the bore honed to a perfectly round 4.060 inches

diameter with a 3.625 inch stroke taking it out to 375 cubic inches. This unshrouds the valves (normal practice for race engines) and, with the right cam, facilitates a louder more fiery sound when the engine is fired up with more flames from the exhaust headers. Beaulieu already had a blower from a part-restoration carried out in the 1980s and this was sent to Littlefield Blowers in California who serviced and re-tuned it for the frontmounted Potvin set up that characterises the car. Back at Booth-Arons, the bright work was tumbled and polished – including a rare set of 1960 vintage Dodge truck valve covers that were sent to the chrome shop after some metal work had been carried out. Other parts were machined and made ready for assembly. A brand new Taylor Vertex Magneto was assembled by Vertex so that it was exactly the same as the Scintilla unit fitted to the original car. With the addition of several custom made race components the result was an immaculate recreated engine that was shown at the Autosport International show in January 2011.
The next step Following on from the first part of restoring the 1961 Allard Chrysler dragster the Allard Chrysler Action Group (ACAG) team had a heart for the project – an engine recreated by Booth-Arons in the USA. Now they could complete the job by getting the incomplete drive chain components back into working order. A few engine jobs had to be restored or recreated once the engine was back in the UK.

t history back to life
Having been carefully restored, the dragster has now been fired up for the first time since 1964.
Using photos taken of the car in 1961 Sydney Allard’s grandson Lloyd manufactured two stainless steel blower tubes linking the blower to the inlet manifold. A chassis brace made it particularly awkward. A starter motor was required and the ACAG selected a Powerlite unit made by rotating electrics specialists Eurolec Components. They modified a Pontiac fitment starter to suit requirements. As well as being incomplete, some of the existing drivetrain components needed a lot of work. Everything had to be stripped back, cleaned, repaired and reassembled with new bearings and seals as necessary. Many items were of Ford Pilot origin as installed on Allard sports cars of the day. The Allard Owners Club was very helpful in locating some of these. The gearbox was in bad condition, but fortunately classic car fan Rob Warrington had been working on an Allard engine for some
time. He had a spare Ford Pilot gearbox, the same as that fitted to the Allard Chrysler, and he kindly donated it to the project. This enabled ACAG member Chris Eames to assemble a box out of the existing unit and that donated by Rob. The result – two forward gears and one reverse if required; just as on the original dragster. The rear axle required work and a half shaft needed repair. The Marles steering box was stripped, cleaned and reassembled. The fuel tank received a detailed inspection. After cracks had been welded it was pressure tested before cleaning and polishing. The brake master cylinders had to be replaced with new units as the originals were not serviceable. Likewise with the rear brake shoes. In fact the complete braking and fuel system had to be recreated from photos. The front and rear wheels were soda blasted and crack tested along with the chassis and other components. The wheels were

Scotch-Brite cleaned, crack tested, polished and will be painted red as on the original car. The recreated car has now been fired up in public – the first time since 1964, the year it was retired. There is still much work to do such as replacing the damaged chrome plating and paint, plus the clutch is still not quite right. Further tuning is also necessary to get the engine running smoothly. As a concept the complete project certainly included remanufacturing procedures and processes that I think Bill Gager, the President of APRA, would appreciate. And it shows that remanufacturing is not just about being green. It is also about preserving history. You could say that although retaining its historic integrity as far as possible, it has been recreated with its new role in mind. Not to race, but to inform, inspire and entertain. Full details about the restoration and the car’s racing history can be found by selecting the Latest News tab on www.allardchrysler.org.

Having gone into liquidation in 2011, the renowned Danish supplier of engine rebuilding machines like crankshaft grinders, cylinder boring machines, line boring machines et cetera has been given a new lease of life. A last minute lifeline to the company was thrown by its former dealer in Hong Kong, the HK Bestech Group, which acquired the remains of AMC-Schou earlier this year and is now preparing to re-launch the company worldwide. The revival of AMC-Schou, which, over its 60-year lifetime sold more than 16,500 advanced machines to manufacturers and remanufacturers in 100 countries, was marked at the recent Automechanika show

Most of our former dealers want to work with us again, so we look forward to a good start.” The new owner of AMC-Schou, Yujie Li, a former AMC dealer for China, has signed agreements with several former AMC employees, including former Production Director, Arne Christiansen and Claus Andersen who was Sales and Marketing Director at AMC-Schou until his departure in 2007. Yujie Li’s HK Bestech Ltd. Which also represents Rottler and Serdi in China, is currently building a new factory for AMCSchou in a free zone area just outside Shanghai. The 20,000 sq.m. factory will receive the production machinery from AMC-Schou’s old factory in Galten outside Aarhus, Denmark, over the coming months

and is scheduled to open early in the New Year. The new company will be divided into AMC Denmark, which will have responsibility for worldwide sales and services under Claus Andersen, while AMC-China will produce the machines under the management of Arne Christiansen.
Huge market “We see a huge market for engine remanufacturing in China, where between 17 and 20 million new cars come onto the road
every year,” Claus Andersen told ReMaTecNews. “Obviously, in the mid-term, there will be an enormous number of engines that can be remanufactured. We mustn’t forget either, that until recently the Chinese authorities did not allow remanufactured engines, only repairs. With the government’s new commitment to remanufacturing, this is going to change. At the same time, I believe that there will be substantial opportunities for selling our machines to remanufacturers of other types of products outside of China.”
Upon his departure in 2007, Claus Andersen, a well-known face in the reman industry at the time, formed his own company, Dalcan Machines, which specialised in sales of machinery to Russia and other former Soviet states. Dalcan Machines will continue to operate as a separate unit. AMC Denmark will be headquartered in the town of Vejle in eastern Jutland, where Claus Andersen also owns a supplier to the motor industry under the name of Jens Linde A/S.

Remanufacturing has high profile at Automechanika A large number of remanufacturers and suppliers to the reman industry gathered in Frankfurt in September.
Automechanika 2012, the world’s largest automotive fair, attracted a record of 4600 exhibitors from 74 countries, as well as 148,000 visitors from 174 countries. Among the exhibitors, ReMaTecNews loosely counted more than 80 with direct or indirect links to the reman industry plus several hundreds more among the visitors. An unscientific opinion poll by ReMaTecNews indicated that a significant proportion of remanufacturers and others in the reman supply chain maintained a positive outlook for the immediate and mid-term future. “Yes, business is clearly picking up,” said one. “This, of course, does not apply to everyone and all segments. But most of those I have spoken to expect the coming year to see an improvement in trading conditions. Business at the stands has been brisk and I, for one, look forward to striking new deals when we return from the show. The signs are that the same goes for many others.” A similar tone could be heard from other players in the reman industry, not least from the special reman stand of CLEPA, the Brussels-based European Association of Automotive Supplies. For the first time, the association hosted a booth dedicated to remanufacturing under the banner of ‘Reman – Promoting the advantages of remanufacturing mechanical and electronic automotive products’. Describing reman as ‘a future core business in many fields’, the stand distributed a range of informational material for an industry that CLEPA estimates is worth approximately eight to ten billion euros in annual retail sales. CLEPA’s commitment to reman was further underlined by its CEO, Jean-Marc Gales, who said: “Reman is one of the main

growth drivers in the European aftermarket which, together with the US, is the largest in the world.” Much interest centred on the recent definition of reman established by CLEPA in partnership with APRA (Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association), FIRM (the European Engine Remanufacturers Association), MERA (Motor and Equipment Remanufacturers Association) and the Remanufacturing Industries Council in the US. “It was clearly a good idea to show our reman activities at Automechanika,” Josef
Frank, Senior Consultant at CLEPA, told ReMaTecNews. “The new definition attracted a lot of attention, not just because several organisations have agreed on one definition but also due to the environmental aspects of remanufacturing. A recent survey commissioned by CLEPA shows that remanufactured products can help save up to 400 kt CO2, which corresponds to the annual emission of 200,000 vehicles or the absorption of 30,000 hectares of forest. That illustrates the importance of reman.”

The next steps to be undertaken by CLEPA and its reman partners will be to initiate talks with ACEA, the OEM’s trade body, concerning the possibility of ACEA signing up to the new definition. Parallel efforts will be directed towards the European Commission, which currently does not distinguish between ‘remanufacture’ and ‘reuse’. “As we know, these are entirely different concepts,” Josef Frank said. “Remanufacturing is now recognised as a necessary business and we must ensure that everybody is aware of what exactly it is.”

Impending boom in telematics
Between 2012 and 2017 safety and security telematics solutions in new vehicles will increase from 10.2 per cent to 49 per cent. That’s the prediction in a recent report from the international consultancy, ABI Research. In a new report, ABI Research states that the forthcoming boom in the application of telematics will, to a significant extent be driven by regulatory bodies and, therefore, will not just be subject to market forces. “Clearly, progress in government mandates in both Europe (eCall) and Brazil (CONTRAN 245) will be important growth drivers for the uptake in safety and security telematics solutions in the next five years,” said ABI Research Vice President and Practice
Director Dominique Bonte. “However, strong commercial drivers also exist, with safety high on the public image priority list of many car OEMs and features such as advanced remote diagnostics, and preventive maintenance becoming instrumental in offering better service and an optimized user experience to car owners.” While embedded systems are claimed to be the only reliable way to implement telematics safety features by most OEMs, Ford continues defying this paradigm by bringing emergency calling functionality via its hybrid phone-based SYNC system to Europe in 2012, ABI said. In a similar vein, Ford has partnered with
insurance vendor State Farm in the U.S. to launch smartphone-based UBI solutions. In both instances, Ford is aiming to roll out products across its entire vehicle range to all its customers at no additional cost, bringing safety telematics and UBI within reach of the mass market. While safety- and infotainmentconnected car features are often implemented on a shared hardware platform, increasing concerns about security breaches and cyberattacks are prompting the automotive industry to isolate safety from infotainment functionality. “If this is not done on a hardware level, this is certainly done on a software level through virtualization or container approaches,” ABI says.
US-based GB gets second home GB Remanufacturing Inc, a US supplier of petrol and diesel fuel injectors, injector components and diesel electronics to the automotive aftermarket, has competed the renovation of a new site in Long Beach, California. The new 18,000-square-foot facility will allow the company more room for expansion. “Cherry Industrial Circle allows more room for the company to grow, providing GB with increased space for production, raw materials, core storage, and research and development,” says the company. The new facility is an addition to the remanufacturer’s original 8,400-square-foot building, which is just down the road and will
remain in operation. Founded in 1986, the company offers an aftermarket range which
includes more than 1,000 part numbers covering more than 30,000 vehicles.

The outlook Established in 1991 by former owner Mikael Thor, LBM Autoparts offers a broad range of parts for ZF, Mercedes, Ford, GM, Jatco and Mitsubishi. “The short-term outlook is strong and we now have plans to to launch in the rest of Scandinavia,” Mikael Thor says. “The market potential is huge but small part distributors face challenges because of the proliferation of variants. Between them STM and STS are Sweden’s biggest actors in terms of production, competence and resources so the merger allows us to engage in activities that we might not to be able to manage on our own.”

More demand for knowledge Among the offers of interest to remanufacturers at this year’s Automechanika in Frankfurt, Germany, was an automatic transmission seminar organized by Dutch parts distributor Automatic Choice. “Usually ‘13’ is considered an unlucky number,” said Fred Vendrig of Automatic Choice (ACE). “Fortunately, this did not apply to our 13th seminar on September 15. We had a full house of keen transmission rebuilders from 24 countries.” The seminar’s attendees listened to the
always eloquent Wayne Colonna from ATSG in the US and his Dutch colleague, Coen van Beek from CVTPushbelt.com. Wayne Colonna guided his audience through the Mercedes 722.9, the Continuous Variable Transmission of Mercedes and introduced them to the Getrag transmission. Coen van Beek provided an insight into the JF011E transmission, the CVT Transmission mainly used for Nissan. New to this year’s proceedings was an Question & Answer session where participants
could direct questions about automatic transmissions to a panel of experts. “Judging from the interest it’s clear that there is a growing need for more knowledge about rebuilding automatic transmissions,” Fred Vendrig added. “Over the years automatic transmissions have become extremely complex and dealing with failure requires the upmost expertise on the part of the rebuilder.” Automatic Choice has announced that the next seminar is planned for the ReMaTec Exhibition in Amsterdam in June 2013.

Are intelligent in-vehicle systems a threat to remanufacturers? As in every other part of daily life, travelling, driving, moving or whatever you call it, is changing dramatically. Driven by huge numbers of connected, integrated ECUs, transportation is, undeniably, getting increasingly safer year by year. Additional functions are supporting the driver in critical or complex situations in order

to eliminate risks caused by human inattention and fallibility. In fact, many modern cars are braking, steering and accelerating almost independently of the driver. As modern vehicles are gradually taking over a significant part of the drivers’ competencies, we must ensure that the controlling systems do not fail – the car user of tomorrow can rely on his vehicle. It is, therefore, no wonder that we’re now witnessing a discussion as to whether remanufacturing of these important controlling parts could affect the car-system’s reliability. As a result, we must consider the opportu-

While all remanufacturers want to produce high quality, reliable reman units, we must, at the same time, state that the final integration of remanufactured components in automotive systems should also be taken into consideration by the remanufacturer. To properly evaluate the safety relevance of an automotive part, the functionalities, including the inter-dependence of the different components of the vehicle’s system

must be taken in account. As long as we can ensure that the remanufacturing process does not change the functionality and does not impact negatively on the vehicle’s safety, we’re on target. If, however, we begin to modify our products or use non original components, the engineering has to ensure that the safety of the complete integrated automotive systems remains unchanged. Accordingly, new challenges are facing all players in the reman industry. As safety relevance is vehicle application related, the supplier of spare parts will have to declare for which application his or her product is released and the remanufacturer must be able to evaluate the safety relevance of his product in the application concerned. A general statement that ‘it fits’ is not sufficient for reman products in modern cars. Remanufacturing will get more sophisticated and complex, safety relevant products require developed engineering processes and additional know how. Standards and methods have to be developed to ensure that future reman products can be provided to the automotive aftermarket. One of APRA’s tasks is to help its members handle such new challenges. As an integral part of the worldwide automotive remanufacturing sector we have a clear role in ensuring the future for remanufacturers – and for an industry whose benefits can no longer be disputed.

He also highlighted the financial challenges medium companies/remanufacturers are facing when dealing with banks or potential investors. Last, but not least Prof. Bücker
drew attention to the increasing competition from vehicle manufacturers where the use of new units defeat the industry’s green objectives. André Paetzold spoke about the wide variety of electronic control units which his company faces and which force Hitzing & Paetzold to undertake complex reverse engineering tasks. Peter Bartel, the new Chairman of APRA in Europe, focused on the sensitive subject of remanufacturing safety components. Explaining how to classify parts as safety components, Peter Bartel proposed that with the right processes safety parts can be safely remanufactured.
