Bücker appointed APRA, ATRA 5 Professor 8 and AAPEX
Cardone Industries Inc, the world’s largest remanufacturer, has sold the majority of its business to a private US investment group. Michael Cardone Jr., one of the company’s two founders, will, however, remain CEO.
In a rare honour for a western industrialist, China’s National Key Laboratory has bestowed the title of Professor on Carsten Bücker, Managing Director of Germany’s BU Drive and a former recipient of ReMaTecNews’ Remanufacturer of the Year Award.

EDITOR’S LETTER ReMaTecNews Volume 11 – Number 8 – Dec.2011 / Jan.2012
2011 – an interesting year for remanufacturing
ReMaTecNews, the only international news magazine dedicated to automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing worldwide, is an independent channel for news, views and developments within the remanufacturing industry. Published by: RAI Langfords B.V. P.O. Box 10099 1001 EB Amsterdam The Netherlands In association with
By tradition, the end of the year is a time for taking stock. This year is no different apart from the fact that reflecting on 2011 may well be more uplifting than on other occasions in the past in view of the many activities and developments that have characterised the automotive remanufacturing industry over the past year. By and large, these have highlighted the increasingly important role of the industry and its players – including in terms of the public. Indeed, there is encouraging news across-the-board. On several fronts, in academic circles, in the relevant professional associations and inside the individual companies, there is much evidence of a renewed confidence. Equally, signs of a growing understanding of the need for the industry to meet the challenges of changing commercial and technology environments head on are becoming widespread. There is a pattern to this. Show organisers such as APRA, ATRA, Automechanika and Amsterdam RAI in the form of its ReMaTec exhibition, report significant increases in the demand for seminars, workshops and lectures, events designed to educate, train or otherwise keep participants updated on technological advances.

On an academic level the year saw new examples of budding partnerships between research institutions and corporate and/or independent remanufacturers. Only a few years ago, it was only very large businesses that felt comfortable embarking on, or investing in, scientific development programmes. Today, this route is increasingly open to smaller independent remanufacturers (for an example of this see page 8). Currently, of course, the leading academic suppliers of remanufacturing solutions for businesses are Professor Rolf Steinhilper’s Chair of Manufacturing and Remanufacturing at the University of Bayreuth, Germany, and Professor Nabil Nasr at the Golisano Institute of Sustainability in Rochester in New York. In time, there will be others and the industry will be better for it.

Yet another signal is coming from the trade organizations. With its biennial exhibitions in Eastern Europe and its International Forum in Shanghai in December, APRA is adding a further international dimension to its activities. At the same time, the recently formed MERA in the US is rapidly making its presence felt, in part through its lobbying activities vis-à-vis the US Government and in part as an instigator of information campaigns for remanufacturing. CLEPA, the European Association of Automotive Suppliers is actively promoting the benefits of a common system of standards for remanufactured products.

While not everybody may agree on all aspects of this range of new initiatives, the broader picture is clear. 2011 was a year of progress and initiatives in remanufacturing. As we enter the New Year, we venture to say that 2012 could be an equally interesting year. The team at ReMaTecNews wishes all readers and their families a prosperous New Year.

Cardone brings in investors The family behind the world’s largest independent remanufacturer sells majority stake to investment group TPG. The name Cardone will continue to figure on the company’s signs, logos, boards, packaging and much besides. After two generations the family carrying its name will continue to be the driving force behind Cardone Industries Inc. But it will no longer be the sole owners of the world’s largest independent remanufacturer. From the new year Cardone Industries Inc will be majority owned by the investment company, TPG, a private equity business with offices across the world. Cardone’s decision to seek fresh capital is based on high expectations for further growth and opportunities for expanding the company’s activities across the board, the company says. “The remanufactured automotive parts industry is as strong as it has ever been and CARDONE experienced the best sales year in the company’s history in 2010,” Michael Cardone, Jr., Chairman and CEO of CARDONE Industries said. “Our dynamic growth and the increased demand for our products have presented CARDONE with business opportunities on a scale that we have never experienced before.” “Over the past few months, CARDONE explored a variety of options that would provide the company with an influx of capital to accelerate expansion and invest in the future growth of the company,” he added. “The acquisition of CARDONE by TPG will strengthen our position to pursue new product lines and further enhance our competitiveness within the industry.” Following the transaction, TPG will become the controlling shareholder and will work with the Cardone family and executive team to continue the company’s growth, TPG said in a statement. The transaction is expected to close at the end 2011.
TPG Capital A new player in remanufacturing, TPG Capital is a global, private investment firm founded in 1992 with $48 billion of assets under management and offices in San Francisco, Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Houston, London, Luxembourg, Melbourne, Moscow, Mumbai, New York, Paris, São Paulo, Singapore and Tokyo. The company has extensive experience with public and private investments worldwide, based on leveraged buyouts, recapitalizations, spinouts, growth investments, joint ventures and restructurings. “TPG has helped

to optimize and grow many industrial businesses such as Armstrong World Industries, American Tire Distributors, Ducati, Graphic Packaging, Grohe, Kraton Polymers and Nexeo Solutions,” the company says. TPG has also invested in world-class companies in a variety of industries including Burger King, Neiman Marcus, J.Crew and PETCO. “We have been extremely impressed with the superb franchise that the Cardone family and its employees have built in the remanufacturing segment,” said Kevin Burns, partner at TPG Capital. “With its diverse portfolio of remanufactured products for cars and light trucks, and unmatched reputation for quality and reliability, CARDONE ensures its customers can meet the growing needs of the aging U.S. auto fleet. We look forward to working with the CARDONE team to build upon the great foundation that’s already in place.”
Cardone Industries Inc. Founded in 1970 by Michael Cardone Jr. and his late father, CARDONE Industries In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has been privately held, family-owned and operated since its foundation. Over the course of 42 years and three generations, the Cardone family built the company from the ground up to become a world leader in the automotive remanufacturing industry with operations in five countries and 6,000 employees. The Cardone family is committed to remaining an important part of the company and looks forward to working with TPG to grow the business, the company said in a statement. In June this year Michael Cardone Jr. gave the keynote speech at the the award ceremony for ReMaTecNews’ Remanufacturer of the Year Award in Amsterdam.

NEWS FROM THE INDUSTRY
CLEPA emphasises its support for remanufacturing At its third Automotive Aftermarket Conference in Brussels on November 24, 2011, CLEPA, the umbrella organisation for Europe’s automotive parts supply industry, reaffirmed its strong support for remanufacturing. “Remanufacturing is a core business of many CLEPA members. Therefore it’s crucial to clearly communicate the technical expertise and know-how that’s involved in the remanufacturing process carried out by our members. Consequently, we need to differentiate remanufacturing against non-technical methods which are often wrongly referred to as remanufacturing,” CLEPA informed the 200 participants from the industry, trade, workshop networks who attended the conference. The audience also numbered attendees from the European Commission, the European Parliament, EU Member States and the media. In a new initiative, CLEPA invites all stakeholders to participate in the formulation of a cross-industry definition for remanufacturing that applies to both OES and IAM businesses and based on the rules of the Automotive BER 461/2010, which uses the definitions of ‘OE Quality’ and ‘Matching Quality’. CLEPA looks forward to receiving proposals for cooperation, Josef Frank, Director Aftermarket Department of CLEPA, says.
More than 200 representatives from the automotive industry, its organisations and the EU participated in CLEPA’s aftermarket conference in November 2011.
Technical information In a further important move CLEPA urges car manufacturers to make their technical information available to all independent operators. “It is of utmost importance that ’Repair and Maintenance Information’ (RMI) and unequivocal parts identification are available in an appropriate form for all channels in the automotive aftermarket. This must be done to ensure fair competition amongst all market players and to give the many SMEs in the industry a chance to survive in these challenging times.” CLEPA says.
CLEPA indicated that it will monitor whether automakers comply with the spirit of current regulations in terms of the provision of technical information. “We count on the European Commission to rigorously check compliance with the ’Euro 5’ regulation and Competition Law on this matter and we are confident that the European Commission and other stakeholders will also undertake the necessary actions to force car manufacturers to comply with the legislation,” CLEPA said.
Conference programme Besides the importance of developing and promoting remanufacturing, the conference programme included presentations on subjects such as ‘Megatrends in the Aftermarket Supply Chain of the Automotive Aftermarket’, ‘What Makes Consumers Choose a Workshop?’, ‘Repair and Maintenance Information’ issues and ‘The Internet’s Relevance to the Aftermarket’. The conference made it clear that the automotive aftermarket is huge and still
profitable although the competition between car manufacturers and independent operators will become tougher. New technologies and changing consumer behaviour will bring other business models influenced by the internet, electronics and remanufacturing on the one hand and new players on the other. In conclusion, ‘a level playing field is crucial’ is the message.
Networking evening The Aftermarket Conference was preceded by a networking evening with more than 160 leading figures from industry and politics, with a key note speech by Ignacio Garcia Bercero, Director DG Trade from the European Commission, who is responsible for Sustainable Development and Bilateral Trade Relations. Ignacio Bercero is also Chief Negotiator for the EU-Korea and EU-India Free Trade Agreements. The date of the 2012 CLEPA conference is November, in Brussels, Belgium.

e future of remanufacturing wherever and whenever we need it at a relatively modest cost. As technology and the optimisation of processes become ever more complex, I’m convinced that remanufacturing will benefit much more from partnerships with researchers and scientists in the future. To me there is little doubt that this is one important way forward for remanufacturers.” Following the official ceremony, the head of the National Key Laboratory, Professor Xu Binshe, hosted a lunch for Carsten Bücker and his wife Claudia, which was also attended by Professor Rolf Steinhilper and Dr.-Ing Stefan Freiberger of Bayeuth University in Bavaria as well as the laboratory’s Deputy Head, Professor Zhu Sheng and other scientific staff. Cat Reman to remanufacture turbine components for Vestas Wind Systems Caterpillar’s reman arm signs huge contract with Danish wind turbine giant
Caterpillar, the world’s largest reman organisation and Vestas Wind Systems, the leading supplier of wind turbines worldwide, have signed a 10-year global agreement for remanufacturing wind turbine components. As Denmark-based Vestas has an installed base of 44,500 wind turbines in 66 countries across the world, the contract represents a substantial move for both parties. Some observers estimate the value of the contract to be close to one billion dollars, one of the world’s largest reman contracts ever. The move also illustrates the increasing opportunities for remanufacturers – and for manufacturers of engineering components outside the automotive and heavy duty segments of the motor industry. “Vestas has chosen to enter this agreement to ensure remanufacturing services of a high quality and at a competitive price for its customers. With the agreement, Caterpillar will supply Vestas with cost competitive remanufacturing services that will enable its components to meet the highest quality and reliability standards, while at the same time reducing the impact on the environment. The relationship with Caterpillar will be managed by Vestas’ Spare Parts & Repair Business Unit and will cover the remanufacture of minor components and sub-component repair in support of Vestas’ internal repair sites,” the two companies said in a joint statement.
Sustainable development “Caterpillar is a global leader in remanufacturing, and we’re excited to be providing

those services to Vestas,” added Greg Folley, Caterpillar Vice-President with responsibility for the Remanufacturing & Components Division. “Our tradition of quality and continuous improvement will serve Vestas customers well. This agreement is also an example of Caterpillar’s focus on sustainable development: by applying our technology and innovation to other products, we use our resources more efficiently, have less impact on the environment and support our customers
at the same time.” Under the agreement Cat Reman will use its global presence and expertise to remanufacture Vestas wind turbine components initially at its facilities in North America. This will be followed by other CAT facilities in Europe and Asia. The arrangement between the two companies will help Vestas provide a parts and repairs service, which the Danish company expects to grow into a EUR 700 million business by the end of 2011. In 2010, Vestas service business was worth EUR 623 million, a figure that is rising quickly, according to Phil Jones, head of Vestas’ spare parts and repair operations. “We do some remanufacturing work, but Caterpillar has a global network and deep expertise in this area with good facilities so it makes sense to partner with them,” he said. Employing a workforce of 20,000, Aarhus-based Vestas claims that its 44,500 wind turbines across the world reduce carbon emissions by approximately 50 million tonnes of CO2 every year, while at the same time building energy security and independence.

The head office of the new trading company PowerMax is in Bramminge in Southern Denmark.
Jens Lindholm back in action Two years after leaving an executive position with Bosch, Jens Lindholm, the former head of Holger Christiansen of Denmark, is returning to the reman industry. Lindholm, the winner of ReMaTecNews’ Remanufacturer of the Year Award in 2005, is launching a new company, PowerMax, which will specialise in rotating electrics, including starters and alternators. Starters and alternators were the main focus when Lindholm ran Denmark-based Holger Christiansen for many years, first under the ownership of Hella and subsequently for Bosch, which acquired Holger Christiansen in 2007. Lindholm resigned from Bosch in 2009 and since then has been contractually committed not to work with remanufacturing. The contract period has now expired and Lindholm is setting up his own business as a trading company within the field of autoelectrical parts for the European aftermarket. Working from a newly acquired-office-cumwarehouse of 3,000 sq. m in Bramminge 15 miles from Holger Christiansen’s headquarters in Esbjerg in Southern Denmark, Lindholm has spent several months establishing and reestablishing contacts within the industry. As a result, he is starting out with a significant network for the new company. “Working with our product programme,
preparing the database and selecting suppliers has taken a great deal of time but we’re now ready for business,” Jens Lindholm told ReMaTecNews. “I won’t deny that I’ve missed working in the reman industry and I’m delighted to be back and look forward immensely to working with old and new partners in the industry.”
Advanced test equipment “PowerMax’s ambition is,” says Lindholm, “to be an ‘European supplier’ with focus on autoelectrics.” It’s clear, however, that he’s not just talking about any European supplier - but a position at the top. This is also evidenced by the company’s procurement of a range of advanced test equipment for both component tests and tests of complete units. “One thing I’m certain about,” he says. “We must have extreme focus on quality. There will be no cheap products from the Far East from us.” So far Jens Lindholm has gathered around him a team of six, all with previous experience in the remanufacturing industry and some of whom have worked with him in

the past. In the medium term, the aim is to extend the number to around 15 as the business advances. He is confident that it will. “I’ve received many positive reactions from past colleagues as I’ve been explaining what we plan to do,” he says. “They clearly find our plans exciting. So far, it’s been a very positive experience for me. I love being back.”

Industry week in Las Vegas 2011
Remanufacturing conti n make an impact in the m Remanufacturing is alive and kicking! That, at least, is the message from this year’s ‘Industry Week’ in Las Vegas where the two US supershows, AAPEX and SEMA, are preceded by the long-established reman exhibitions, the parts remanufacturers Big R and the automatic transmission rebuilders’ ATRA Powertrain Expo. Running from October 29 to October 31 - one day more than normal the shows attracted up to 200 exhibitors and more than 2,500 visitors. For remanufacturers the coming together of the APRA and ATRA shows once
APRA celebrates its first 70 years APRA celebrated the association’s 70th Anniversary at the BIG R Show, where past Chairman, Ivan Cregger, was on hand at the APRA History Booth, with pictures from the 1940s and 1950s as well as other association memorabilia.
Cregger, who joined APRA in the late 1940s and served as Chairman in 1983, answered questions about the people and the things that helped APRA grow from a small group of business people with a common vision to the worldwide association that it is today. APRA President, Bill Gager said: “The members and volunteer leaders over the past 70 years had a real vision of what the rebuilding/remanufacturing industry should be and they worked hard to make it happen.”

again demonstrated the value of concerted action. Compared to last year, when the two exhibitions were held separately, the exhibition hall at the Las Vegas Hilton attracted a substantial number of visitors to both segments with action in the corridors showing notable improvement on some recent shows. Dare one hope that these two important reman organisations could agree to co-operate on a broader scale in the future? At a time when pressures in the markets are rising and
new challenges facing remanufacturers intensify, pulling together is certainly one of the ways forward. Could statements made by both key figures in their respective organisations point in this direction? ATRA’s Executive Director, Dennis Madden, said, “We’re pleased that we were able to co-host our exposition once again at the same time as the International Big R Show.

The ReMaTec show and APRA extends partnership ✍ By William Schwarck
During the Big R Show in Las Vegas Amsterdam RAI – the organisers of the biennial ReMaTec shows – and APRA signed a new partnership agreement for working together on the show over the coming years. The agreement means that APRA will continue as one of the shows main sponsors.
From left Fernand Weiland, Vice-Chairman, APRA Europe, APRA President, Bill Gager and Niels Klarenbeek, Project Manager for the ReMaTec shows.
attempt to put the benefits of remanufacturing on the map before a wider audience. From a stand just inside the exhibition hall, the one-year-old MERA (Motor & Equipment Remanufacturers Association), a division of the US’ influential MEMA (Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association), launched its new Education and Awareness Campaign ‘Manufactured Again™’. A substantial initiative, the campaign aims at improving the understanding and acceptance of remanufacturing by pinpointing the environmental, economic and product performance of remanufactured products. Among the campaign’s aims is to promote a clear definition of remanufacturing as a standardised industrial process that recovers and recycles end-of-life products and returns them to a state that is ‘as good as new - or better’. Our experience with a joint ATRA/APRA show in Las Vegas in 2009 was beneficial to members of both associations and it looks like this year’s joint show is another winner. Two great shows for the price of one.” Bill Gager APRA’s President agreed: “Both our associations believe very strongly that this will provide each other’s attendees and suppliers with some new opportunities and will help them reach more people. Both associations will continue to offer their broad
range of technical seminars and workshops just prior to and during the exposition. Moreover, we look forward to welcoming other remanufacturers and rebuilders from a variety of other product lines from around the world. This joint event makes this the largest remanufacturing exposition on earth.” Meanwhile, the huge AAPEX automotive parts show in the Sands convention centre immediately following the APRA/ATRA event, demonstrated yet another promising
For remanufacturers of all sizes “The campaign is for remanufacturers of all sizes,” said John Chalifoux, MERA’s President and CEO. “The focus is on the existence of, and adherence to, a standardised industrialised process so company size is not important. Rather the campaign draws comparisons to those that may repair, rebuild, refurbish etc. The common thread is that all remanufacturers are, first and foremost, manufacturing companies.”

Dennis Jacinto new Chairman of APRA A well known face in reman circles on both sides of the Atlantic, Dennis Jacinto, will serve as Chairman of APRA, the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association for 2012. Having acquired Lester Catalog in 1997, California-based Dennis Jacinto turned the relatively modest print catalogue business into a key source of information for everything related to the starters and alternators business until he sold it to Weatherill Associates (WAI Global) in 2010. However, he still runs Lester Catalog for Weatherill.

An impression
As remanufacturing has changed, Lester Catalog has changed along with it. Originally, the catalog was largely based on paper and covered more than starters and alternators. Today data-services via the internet accounts for 90 per cent of the business, offering the most comprehensive knowledge-base in remanufacturing - or even in most of the other automotive segments. Lester’s KwikFinder.net, in fact, is a vital resource for remanufacturers to identify the right units as they begin the rebuilding process. Dennis Jacinto is not only a key provider of information for s/a remanufacturers. Although it goes back some time, he spent his early years working for a supplier of components for electrical remanufacturers and later, in 1983, started his own company rebuilding starter drives and solenoids, becoming a fill line supplier to electrical rebuilders. In the 90s, however, he switched his attention full-time to the catalogue business, which he ran successfully until selling to Weatherill Associates. “Remanufacturing is still a good business to be in - it’s not just the same business as before. Those who are changing with the times, finding niches and doing what they need to do are doing great, perhaps better than ever before. But the guys who haven’t changed over the past 20 years are not going to make it. It’s as simple as that.”

Ninth parts2clean show in Stuttgart
✍ By Eric van Spelde
Cleaning for remanufacturers Remanufacturing was perhaps not uppermost in the minds of most exhibitors at Stuttgart’s annual parts2clean show. But there were strong signals that exhibitors are becoming increasingly aware of remanufacturing as a future market for their products. This, of course, is entirely in keeping with the ever more stringent requirements for clean technologies for remanufacturers.
With 4,779 visitors from 49 countries on five continents, an increase of 18.1% compared to last year, the ninth parts2clean set a new record. 18.4% of visitors came from outside Germany. With 237 exhibitors from 16 countries, this year’s show also saw an increase of roughly 7%. The exhibiting companies pre-
sented products and services covering the entire process sequence over 65,000 sq. ft. of net exhibition floor space (160,000 sq.ft. of overall floor space), i.e. a growth of 4.5% year on year. Most of the relevant companies exhibiting at parts2clean develop cleaning solutions for OEMs and suppliers in the automotive/heavy duty and industrial sectors. Although in many cases there is a difference in the scale of operations – huge batches of identical parts at OEM/supplier level versus
smaller numbers (or even one-offs) of a greater variety – the opportunities for offering similar products to the remanufacturing industry are clear to see. Cleanliness is an important aspect of the production of any metal part – be it a hydraulic component or an engine connecting rod – and is destined to become even more crucial in the immediate future as new statutory regulations come into force. The many innovative products presented at the show included BvL Oberflächentechnik’s new ‘light’ version of its sister company Libelle Praecisio’s Fluid Control technology as part of the standard equipment on their cleaning installation. This continuously monitors the contamination levels of the cleaning bath fluid in the machine, and ensures that set cleanliness requirements are met.
‘Gas – good for your wallet, alternative, sustainable’ Another money-saving tip from the show floor: don’t run the heating elements in your parts cleaning machines on electricity – use natural gas! The Dutch Metalas Cleaning Systems, which offers a range of machinery especially suited to processing smaller batch-
es or single parts of the same specification, is a big fan of natural gas. “The initial investment is a bit more due to more elaborate heating elements,” says Managing Director Rien van Sliedregt. “But when gas costs a mere fraction of what energy suppliers charge for the same energy content from grid electricity, the investment pays for itself within a very short period of time.”
‘Reman is getting more interesting as a target market’ A manufacturer more geared to supplying ‘production line’ type parts cleaning installations to the OEM and OEM supplier markets, Italian-based Icom is one of those taking a new interest in the reman market. “I agree that remanufacturing will grow in importance as the need to re-use valuable materials and save energy in a society that strives for sustainability becomes clear to more and more people in the industry,” says sales supporter Markus Kuhlmann. “Of course, our product line would be most suitable for large-scale remanufacturing of certain components, for instance by OEMs or their subsidiaries. We will be seriously looking into entering this market after the show.”

TRANSMISSION WORLD
ReMaTecNews introduces regular transmission pages This edition sees the launch of a new, regular segment in ReMaTecNews - dedicated transmission pages. At regular intervals throughout the year we will devote a special section to the role of transmission rebuilders, their suppliers and the entire supply chain, manual as well as automatic. While in the US automatic transmissions have long dominated the market, in Europe and elsewhere, automatic transmissions is a rapidly growing area - and, therefore, a field of growing interest to the remanufacturing community. As the reman industry’s leading international information channel, ReMaTecNews wishes to recognise the importance and complex nature - of transmission remanufacturing and believes that we’re meeting a demand that has, perhaps, not been suffi-
ciently recognised until now. By naming the new section Transmission World, we also underline that the transmission section will cover the broadest possible range of transmission related issues - from different types of transmissions to torque converters, repair kits, events, seminars, training sessions and technological development. Everything, in fact, that’s a natural part of the professional remanufacturers’ tool box. Of course, this includes the commercial side - the markets - of transmission remanufacturing, the smaller and larger remanufacturers, new products and technologies, news from the markets, the challenges created by changing technologies and how to solve them. All on a global basis because we live in an ever diminishing world, where information
from one corner of the globe can help to solve problems in another. A world with no common borders but with a plethora of common challenges. With the introduction of Transmission World in ReMaTecNews we hope to meet at least some of them. Finally, but not less importantly: To get the most from this new initiative we welcome suggestions and ideas as well as press releases and other types of information from transmission remanufacturers worldwide. Therefore, if you wish to communicate news or other developments from your company - or about transmissions in general please forward this to us at editorial@rematec news.com with the word ‘transmissions’ in the subject field.

Automatic transmission specialist Bill Henney on new course For more than 25 years Dr. Bill Henney has travelled the world dispensing advice and guidance to transmission remanufacturers. As one of the reman industry’s best known lecturers, Henney has been instrumental in keeping hundreds of remanufacturers - from north to south and from east to west updated on the ever-more demanding complexities involved in rebuilding automatic transmissions. In recent times Henney has added another string to his bow - the Transmission E-Zee shift system developed by his company BlueReach Automation and Control Ltd. of Ringwood in Southern England. The E-Zee application for transmission rebuilders allows users to test transmissions from within the vehicle, i.e. without removing the transmission. “Born from over 30 years of knowledge and practical experience and the latest in automotive electronic and software design, E-Zee shift is by far the most technologically advanced and user-friendly system of its kind,” Henney believes. Judging from the interest in his stand at the recent APRA/ATRA Powertrain in Las Vegas, he is not alone in his confidence in the system. A first time exhibitor at the show, Henney, who is supported by his wife Brenda and son, Andrew, noted a keen interest from the market in the various uses of the tool,

ing events across the world appear unaffected by BlueReach’s commercial activities. At the time of writing, Henney was conducting yet another seminar in the Ukraine.
A frequent participant in remanufacturing shows - and an organiser of training seminars worldwide - Sussex Auto Parts Ltd. in the United Kingdom attended the recent APRA/ATRA Powertrain exhibition in Las Vegas in late October for the first time. “Results from such trips can sometimes be instant, and sometimes take a while to come to fruition, but so far, Sussex Autos have generated a tremendous amount of new interest from both customers and suppliers,” said Director Alan Gadd. “As there are an increasing number of European transmissions on American roads, it looks like there could be good opportunities for us from our participation in Las Vegas. In 2011 alone, Sussex Auto Parts in Hailsham in the South of England have hosted seminars and attended shows in Turkey, Holland, Ukraine, Russia and Italy. This is set to continue in 2012 in keeping with rising demand for knowledge about transmission remanufacturing across the world.

Automatic Choice on the move Automatic Choice, the European supplier of automatic transmission parts, reports a number of recent initiatives aimed at strengthening the Group’s position in the market. In Sophia, Bulgaria, the local ACE sales office under Stella Doncheva has just relocated to new and larger premises which, the company says, will enable the Bulgarian team to expand their services Ron Kreuze, new General Buyer at AC. in Eastern Europe. And back at the Dutch headquarters in Veenendaal, owners Fred Vendrig and Peter de Groot have made two further appointments, bringing the company’s total workforce to 22. The two new
team members are Ron Kreuze as General Buyer and Arno Luyten as Sales Manager. “The appointments will enable us to examine new opportunities in the transmission world and will increase our service to customers,” Fred Vendrig said. Automatic Choice is currently busy scheduling its transmission seminars programme for 2012, which will include the popular Choice Tech Arno Luyten, new Seminar on SeptemSales Manager at AC. ber 15 during the Automechanika show in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany. Based on the interest in these seminars in 2011, Automatic Choice expects to organise more of them in 2012.
Sonnax roadshow at the APRA/ATRA Powertrain Expo Sonnax Industries, the suppliers of transmission, torque converter and powertrain products to the automotive aftermarket, used the combined APRA/ATRA show in Las Vegas to organise one of its roadshows. Under the guidance of renowned transmission expert, Bob Warnke, Sonnax Vice-President of Technical Development, participants learned how to diagnose and salvage valve bodies with effective repairs which restore transmissions to standards that meet or exceed OE. A regular exhibitor at the show, Sonnax can look back at an eventful 2011. Early in the year, the Bellows Fall, Vermont-based business that supplies powertrain products across the world, converted from a private company to a so-called ESOP, a company owned by its employees. The company’s employees are, therefore, now co-owners although the previous co-owner, Tommy Harmon, remains President and CEO of the company. “The ESOP is the ultimate way to reward our employees for their contribution to the success of Sonnax. From now on when customers, suppliers or other stakeholders interact with Sonnax personnel, they’ll be dealing with an owner,” Tommy Harmon stated at the time. Later in the year readers of the industry magazine, Transmission Digest, voted four Sonnax parts Top Ten Shop Products of 2011. The four products are the 4R70W valve body
retaining plate, Chrysler RFE line pressure booster kits, 46/47 RH/RE 2nd gear super hold servo and the dual seal billet accumulator piston kit. And in August Sonnax was named one of 100 companies that constitute the ‘SBA 100’, a group of businesses that have created at least 100 jobs since receiving assistance from the U.S. Small Business Administration. On August 12, SBA Deputy Administrator Marie Johns visited Sonnax in recognition of the company’s success. Since receiving an SBA loan guarantee of $190,000 in 1993, Sonnax has increased revenue, expanded its facilities and hired an additional 118 employees.

ATRA launches newsletter ATRA, the US trade association for automatic transmission rebuilders, is launching a new initiative - the newsletter Shifting Times. According to Membership Director, Kelly Hilmer, the new members-only newsletter will feature new product launches, technology advances and member-related benefits as well as information to help members run their businesses more efficiently. The newsletter will also run a feature on new and successful members. “Members don’t always warm to (technology) change,” she says. “There are still shops in our industry that don’t use computers and some that don’t have fax machines. However, the most successful shops in our industry are those that take advantage of the new technologies available.”

FUTURE REMAN OPPORTUNITIES
Downsizing gets extreme Right now, Europe has family-sized cars on sale with a 1.2 litre turbo petrol engine, and ‘superminis’ the size of yesteryear’s Golf with 1.2 litre three-cylinder diesels. Is that the end of it? Not at all – we bring you Korea’s answer to the Polo Bluemotion sporting three cylinders and 1.1 litres and Ford’s C-Max and Focus powered by a whole 1.0 litres... The case for ‘downsizing’ engines is by now well known: internal combustion engines work at their peak efficiency at or near full load. Hence, a small engine that works hard is more efficient than a large one that’s nearly idling pulling the same load – as long as rpm levels stay the same. Unfortunately, if you need to maintain highway speed up an incline or pass that semitrailer, with the small engine you find you either cannot do it or you need to drop a couple of gears and scream the engine to within an inch of its life – which in itself is as inefficient as you can get as friction losses increase exponentially with engine speed. It is here where forced induction – supercharging or more likely turbocharging – comes to the fore, making a small engine perform like a bigger one as and when needed. Up until a few years ago, resorting to forced induction on petrol engine would compromise its efficiency in the ‘unboosted’ part of the rpm and load range as one needed to drop the static compression ratio in order to avoid detonation when on full boost. However the advent of modern direct fuel injection systems has meant turbocharged spark ignition engines nowadays in nearly all cases (some very high performance engines excepted) run the same static compression ratio as their naturally aspirated counterparts.
Down and out - sometimes While the reman opportunity offered by the OEMs’ downsizing strategy for turbo remanufacturers is rather obvious – in fact, engines without a turbocharger are steadily becoming a minority in the mainstream car segments particularly in Europe – it is something that will greatly influence engine and
28 l ReMaTecNews
Timing chain
fuel system remanufacturers’ businesses too. One could argue a hardworking engine will wear out faster than one that barely has to work for a living pulling the vehicle along. And while this is undoubtedly true, this in itself does not really pose a problem – now as before, the vast majority of cars in scrapyards have a perfectly serviceable engine. Also, the quality of materials and manufacturing processes has improved in leaps and bounds. What is proving to be a potential problem in many of the downsized engines that have hit the market in significant numbers so far, is their tolerance to abnormalities in operation – particularly the buildup of contamination. A 1.5 litre diesel engine that performs the same as a 2.0 litre engine from the last generation, will pass the same amount of intake air and exhaust gases through it with the same potential for carbon deposits and other combustion by-products in a smaller engine. Also, there will likely be no more oil circulating through the engine than in a previous lower spec 1.5 engine that makes two thirds of its power, while at the same time exhaust gas recirculating rates have been upped to as high as 80% in some cases. On the other hand, the high pressure fuel injection systems that are making the high power density possible in the first place, are very sensitive to contamination and other irregularities themselves. Hence, a minor irregularity that results in less than optimal combustion
✍ By Eric van Spelde, Technical Writer can very quickly lead to major engine damage if the culprit is not spotted and corrected. It stands to reason that the higher the engines’ power density gets, the more susceptible to deviations from optimal running conditions they will be.
Down to one litre Which brings us to the new engines we want you to know about. In the ‘supermini’ segment (VW Polo, Renault Clio, Ford Fiesta) the smallest diesel engines hitherto were the Volkswagen Group 1.2 litre triples in the Polo Bluemotion and corresponding ‘eco’ versions of the Skoda and Seat siblings. Fiat Group and Opel/Vauxhall use a 1.3 litre four cylinder engine as their smallest diesel choice, Renault has long stayed with lower output versions of the 1.5 litre unit also found in Meganes, Scenics and Lagunas while PSA employs a 1.6 litre four cylinder in their C3s, DS3s and 207s. Now Hyundai/Kia are upping (or is that downing) the ante with a three cylinder diesel of a mere 1.120 cc capacity powering their new Rio hatchback. It develops 75 PS and 170 Nm, employs a DOHC valve train with cam phasing on the inlet valves, driven by a timing

chain. A single balancer shaft is placed directly under and being driven from the crankshaft. The 1.1 CRDi engine is equipped with the Bosch stop/start system. Common rail injection is by Kefico (license Siemens/Bosch); the exhaust gas recirculation system is electrically actuated and liquid cooled. Driving the new Rio with this engine, drivetrain refinement is impressive compared to the Volkswagen offering, with no undue vibrations or overly clattery noises entering the cabin. We were less taken with the fuel consumption being very far off the 3.6l/100 km NEDC rating at 5.9 l/100 km on average in light weekend traffic – but that is something which typifies most of the current batch of super-frugal ‘eco’ versions, being optimized for the standardised ‘rolling road’ driving cycle test rather than real-world driving. diesel in a four metres long, five door hatchback weighing about 1,050 kgs might sound like ‘pushing it’ to some, it’s small beer compared to what Ford’s latest Ecoboost engine with a grand total of 1.0 litres capacity will go into first. Yes – the first application of this tiny triple will indeed be the family-sized Focus. It will also feature in the MPVs C-Max, Grand C-Max(!) and B-Max. Designed and developed in the UK at Dunton and Dagenham and built in Cologne, Germany starting November 9, 2011 (production will also start in a new Ford plant in
Craiova, Romania soon after), the new engine is designed to give the performance of a 1.6-litre petrol engine, but with significantly reduced emissions and fuel consumption (with a 114g/km NEDC rating for the 125 PS version when installed in the Focus). The turbocharged, direct-injected unit will be available in two power levels – 100 and 125 PS. The Cologne and Craiova plants (will) have a capacity of 350,000 units per annum each, so that from early 2012 up to 700,000 Ecoboost 1.0 engines per year could leave the factory lines.

Two new remanufacturing PhDs In late October 2011 Bayreuth University in Germany, Europe’s leading academic research institution for remanufacturing, celebrated the elevation of two of its scientists from Masters of Science to PhDs. Both new Doctors, Daniel Koehler and Michael Haumann, have been involved in several of the university’s remanufacturing research projects and have acted as advisers to reman companies in and outside Germany. Both have also contributed articles to ReMaTecNews. Michael Haumann’s thesis focused on ‘Managing product and process variety in manufacturing’ and Daniel Koehler’s on ‘Ecological benefits of Remanufacturing compared to new Manufacturing’.

Another opportunity for remanufacturers? A new American company, Gearbox Express in Wisconsin, has been formed to specialise in the repair and remanufacture of wind turbine gearboxes that could need replacing every five to ten years. Like Caterpillar (see page 11) the company believes that the rising use of wind-power will create new opportunities for reman specialists in repairing the gears inside the turbines. “Much like how an entire industry was born around the service and maintenance of
automobiles, we’re excited to be a part of keeping megawatt-class wind turbines running efficiently during their life span,” Brian Neumiller, the company’s Chief Executive said in a statement. Gearbox Express is currently retrofitting a 43,000 square foot industrial building and expects to begin manufacturing next year. It has raised $1.8 million from investors as well as sizeable loans from the public Small Business Administration and from the state of
Wisconsin through the federal stimulus package. Gearbox Express is committed to creating 100 jobs within three years. It claims to be one of the first companies in the United States to remanufacture wind turbine gearboxes in an exchange inventory model. This means that it will keep a stock of remanufactured gearboxes ready to exchange, a practice that is extremely common in the automotive reman industry.
Singapore – Greater emphasis on remanufacturing A remanufacturing and green packaging initiative has been launched by Singapore to stimulate growth in eco-friendly industries, the Singaporean government has announced. The initiative targets remanufacturers, precision engineering service providers and companies interested in venturing into remanufacturing. The Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech), a research institute of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*Star), is promoting green manufacturing in research and development (R&D) collaborations on remanufacturing technologies with Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and National University of Singapore

(NUS). Raj Thampuran, executive director of A*Star’s Science and Engineering Research Council (SERC) commented: “Remanufacturing is a key market space that is undertapped by our local industry. A*Star’s investment in R&D of remanufacturing technologies will not only spur the growth of new industries, with firm foundations in these technologies, but also enhance the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We may well see the growth of more eco-friendly industries in Singapore in the near future.” SIMTech will engage NUS and NTU to jointly develop competitive remanufacturing technologies for Singapore’s manufacturing
industry. Three joint labs will be established by SIMTech and NTU to develop remanufacturing-related technologies in refurbishing and reliability assessment. The joint labs aim to come up with innovative manufacturing and industrial processes that are sustainable, efficient and cost-effective – factors which are crucial to the industry of today,” says Freddy Boey, Deputy President and Provost of NTU. “Key beneficiaries of the remanufacturing initiative include manufacturers of combustion engines and automation equipment, precision engineering service providers and companies interested in venturing into remanufacturing,” the government said.

APRA Europe
NEWS Time to look - or even better to go East... Looking at the economic key indicators for 2011 for many European countries, you could get the impression that Europe consists of two parts. Where once the ‘Iron Curtain’ kept two antagonistic political doctrines apart, there is now an invisible wall dividing European economies. At the end of 2011 we see on the one side ‘old Europe’ facing the euro zone debt crisis and struggling to keep the common currency and revive a stagnating economy while on the other side the ‘new Europe’, growing at, in the case of Poland for example, an impressive 4% of GDP. The growth of the new Europe is driven by a so-called catching-up mechanism, which is pushing East Europeans to rapidly recover from decades of political and economic isolation and reach the same level (or an even higher level) than West Europeans. Looking at the negative figures for 2011 for the number of new cars sold in Western Europe, it is hard to believe that new car sales in Russia may increase by nearly 40% year on year. At the end of 2011, 2.5 millions new cars are likely to have been sold in Russia and if this target is not achieved it will only be because of the shortage in capacity output at the Russian vehicle assembling plants. By 2016, Russia is expected to be the biggest European market for new cars, overtaking the traditional leader, Germany.
Booming aftermarket Since Poland’s EU membership, the catchingup mechanism has resulted in imports of more than 5 million used cars into the country. Combined with sales of new cars, the Polish market, therefore, now has roughly 15 million passenger cars, an almost 100% increase over the past seven years. Similar trends are appearing in all other countries in the region. The growing number of vehicles in Central and Eastern Europe has created a
booming aftermarket, both in terms of repair services and spare parts trading. Because of the adverse climatic and poor road conditions, car owners in this part of Europe are visiting repair shops more frequently than are their counterparts in Western Europe. Price sensitive car owners in Eastern Europe have always valued remanufactured spare parts. The economic benefit for the end user and the growing concerns about the environmental impact of industrialisation by politicians as well as the general population are creating favourable conditions for the remanufacturing industry. FIRM’s GM in Stockholm – On course for the future On 7-8 October, FIRM, the International Federation of Engine Remanufacturers, held its General Meeting 2011 in Stockholm, organised by the Swedish engine reman association MO-RE. The independent engine reman industry was represented by the national engine reman associations of Sweden, Turkey, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium and France. With a view to strengthening its member base and responding to more requests for membership, the GM decided to open the association’s membership to new segments. As a result, the following categories can now join FIRM: • Ordinary members: European national engine reman associations. • Associate members: Other non-European engine reman organisations. • Corporate members: Commercial entities wishing to support FIRM’s objectives. The lobby activities of FIRM were also discussed and members agreed that FIRM should be better placed to implement its mission in the heart of Europe and thus be able to influence international policies through enhanced recognition by European institutions. Already registered in the official European Union Register of Interest Groups. FIRM

will soon also be recognised as an AISBL, a status specially designed for international, non-governmental organisations. Moreover, FIRM adopted a political strategy aimed at developing adhoc alliances and interassociation discussions with other associations (e.g. APRA, CLEPA, FIGIEFA etc.) in order to meet the challenges from the reman sector’s OEMs while, at the same time, maintaining its independence from other reman categories. FIRM also reaffirmed its objectives and mission for the years ahead: • To draw attention to issues of strategic interest to European engine remanufacturers. • Inform the engine reman community of development policies at European and international level that impact on the sector. • To raise awareness among European policy makers of the role played by engine remanufacturers in sustaining safety, security and the environmental compliance of engines. • To encourage the use of engine remanufacturing and rebuilding solutions in Europe, notably by contributing to the policy-making processes within the EU institutions. • To promote remanufacturing to a wider public in terms of consideration for the environment.
With these decisions and on the basis of the mission defined in 2009, FIRM aims to position engine remanufacturing at the centre of European and international policy making and provide a platform for its members for an enhanced exchange of their experiences in the engine remanufacturing sector. In short: FIRM is ready for the future. During the meeting, members had the opportunity to visit the Scania factory, Friday afternoon, in Södertälje near Stockholm and – in particular – its engine manufacturing and testing departments before proceeding to a restaurant for dinner in Stockholm. We extend our warm thanks to our Swedish colleagues from MO-RE, Erik Olsson and Sven Eriksson for having organised an exceptional event and an interesting programme. Well done!
Future meetings • Spring 2012, Istanbul: Workshop (election of new board, harmonisation of engine reman standards) plus visits to two reman factories (cylinder liner, piston manufacturing). • September 2012, Frankfurt: General meeting at Automechanika.

Access to Repair and Maintenance Information (RMI) –
European Commission convinced! ✍ By Ludovic Basset, Brussels After a tough battle with vehicle manufacturers, the AFCAR alliance (FIRM – FIGIEFA – AIRC – CECRA and EGEA) and CLEPA have succeeded in convincing the Member States and the European Commission to make important changes to the passenger car type-approval legislation on the crucial issue of access to Repair and Maintenance Information.
Important provisions Following more than 2.5 years of intense work, a new Regulation (Regulation 566/2010) amending the Euro 5/6 Type-Approval legislation for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles has recently been adopted. In this new text, important provisions have been added to the Euro 5/6 Chapter on Access to Repair and Maintenance Information for independent operators especially with regard to the issue of correctly identifying parts in the light of the ever increasing number of variants for the same vehicle model. Mr. Philippe Jean, Head of the Automotive Unit at DG Enterprise, took the opportunity of the FIGIEFA Congress in Poland earlier in the autumn to explain the new text in more detail and its impact on the aftermarket oper-
ators such as engine remanufacturers, who will gradually see more and more Euro 5/6 type engines in their workshops. This is a significant step forward because the speech, entitled ‘The European Commission’s recent automotive legislation and the future work programme affecting the European aftermarket’, contains a number of crucial clarifications on the question of access to Repair and Maintenance Information, particularly in relation to parts information data for an unequivocal identification of parts, a problem well known in the engine remanufacturing business. The speech points out that for the European Commission, the legislation has conferred a right upon all independent operators in the value chain and therefore upon engine remanufacturers, to have access to Repair and Maintenance Information (RMI) and is not limited to immediate repair. The competitiveness of repairers and the aftermarket as a whole depends to a large extent on the existence and function of other independent actors who provide a broad range of products and services. In this context, Philippe Jean re-emphasised that vehicle component information data
(link between VIN and OE parts numbers) are clearly part of Repair and Maintenance Information, and he gave the Commission’s view on the form in which the data should be provided, namely ‘in a database easily accessible to independent operators’. He also stated that a database is a clearly defined term in the European Database Directive (EC) 96/9 and underlined that access to vehicle manufacturers’ vehicle component data should be granted either by incorporating the vehicle component information into the multi-brand IT applications or by establishing remote access to a VM database which will enable processing of the data. Thereby, the Commission has made an important interpretation to the Regulation 566/2011. Of course, if this may appear difficult for independent engine remanufacturers, it will surely be used by database publishers and, of course, parts suppliers to enhance the accuracy of their parts catalogue. Indirectly, engine remanufacturers should be better served in the near future, at least on the issue of correct parts identification. The speech is on the Commission’s website: http://ec.europa.eu/enterprise/sectors/ automotive/rmi/index_en.htm

In the past three years as Secretary General for FIRM, and thanks to the work of the AFCAR alliance, Ludovic achieved very significant successes for the engine remanufacturing community, notably with regards to access to technical information and, most importantly, on raising the awareness of EU policy makers about the existence and role of engine remanufacturers.
