EDITOR’S LETTER

ReMaTecNews Volume 12 – Number 8 – December 2012

Goodbye to a largely successful year

ReMaTecNews, the only international news magazine and website dedicated to automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing worldwide, is an independent channel for news, views and developments within the remanufacturing industry. Published by: RAI Langfords B.V. P.O. Box 10099 1001 EB Amsterdam The Netherlands In association with

At the end of a busy year, everyone is entitled to stand back and take a breather. That certainly applies to the remanufacturing industry, automotive as well as heavy duty. The shockwaves of the financial crisis that began in 2007 continue to be felt around the world. While in many respects the reman industry was less hard hit than other sectors of the global economy, there is no hiding the fact that the industry has seen some hard times in recent years. The following pages, however, show that there has been no shortage of events highlighting the robust health and resilience of remanufacturers. It has been said before, but there is no harm in saying it again: Remanufacturers find solutions – whether they be technical, financial or commercial. That’s what the industry has survived on. And that’s why it has a future. Of course, the challenges do not stop just because the industry leaves what could be described as a largely successful year behind. The only things that are certain are uncertainty and change – and we all live and operate in an environment characterized by these two fundamental facts of life. So, as we take this opportunity to enjoy the holiday season and take stock, we can look back with pride at the resilience that the industry has demonstrated over the last years – and look forward to another year, knowing that it has the foresight and capacity to deal with the inevitable challenges and cope with the unexpected. ReMaTecNews wishes all our readers and advertisers a prosperous New Year. See you again in 2013.

Remanufacturing – a new initiative in the Middle East An important company in the United Arab Emirates has big plans for remanufacturing automotive and commercial vehicle parts. The initiative is supported by governments. Most people are familiar with jokes about how motorists in the oil-rich nations of the Middle East simply abandon their cars at the roadside when the petrol has run out. That may be about to change. Although automotive remanufacturing has never had priority in the Middle East, Oweis Zahran, the scion of an influential business family in the United Arab Emirates, plans to bring remanufactured automotive products to the region in a big way. With significant financial support from the Emirate’s government, Oweis Zahran is in the process of setting up a large chain of sales Oweis Zahran – planning to bring reman to the Middle East in a big way.

outlets/workshops specializing in remanufactured automotive products in the countries around the Arab Gulf. Backed by his father, Dr M. Zahran’s large trading group, MZ Holdings, Zahran believes that Middle Eastern automotive markets are ready to embrace remanufacturing – and he intends to be at the forefront of it. “For some time MZ Holding’s automotive business has imported remanufactured products from some of the largest remanufacturers in the US,” Oweis Zahran told ReMaTecNews. “In 2010 we began to fully realise the benefits of reman, including the fact that reman offers savings of up to 85 per cent compared to new. I’m confident that remanufacturing is now set to become an important part of the automotive industry in the region.” Based in Dubai and launching in the spring of 2013, the distribution chain plans close to 300 outlets across the Middle East with the support of one of OWS’s partners, a member of the Qatari Royal family. MZ Holding foresees the majority of its stores to be company owned and since it already owns most of the land for the shops, the initial cost of setting it all up is estimated to be relatively modest. Even so, the sums involved run into millions of dollars. “But,” as Oweis Zahran says, “the annual savings in Qatar alone once the project is fully up and running, will amount to 34 million dollars.” MZ Holding, the parent company behind the scheme, is a conglomerate of several large and medium sized companies with interests in some world leading

active in the US and Russia, as well as the Middle East and North Africa. In the Middle East, the current focus is on Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar, but plans are progressing to commence reman activities in other Middle East countries in the near future ‘at an exponential rate’.

The civilian parts market industrial companies like TATRA trucks of the Czech Republic, Salamworld, and MCC (one of the worlds largest construction companies). MZ Holding is considered a very substantial supplier in the Middle East.

Middle East and North Africa Headed by Oweis Zahran, who himself is halfAmerican and a university graduate from an American university, OWS Autoparts is the group’s parts division. Established a few years ago, the business aims to be the first option for consumers throughout the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region for quality autoparts for cars, SUVs and trucks. Geographically, OWS Autoparts is

“We have decided to revolutionize the civilian parts market within MENA by introducing remanufacturing to a region plagued by inferior quality and frequently outright imitation parts,” Oweis Zahran told ReMaTecNews. “The citizens in the region need and deserve a supplier that will provide them with similar or better quality than OEMs at a reasonable price.” “Green is more than just a trend in the market place for us,” he adds. “It’s our commitments to future generations. We strive to increase everyone’s awareness of the imminent danger (of emissions) and ask that people join us in Reducing, Reusing and Recycling.” With remanufacturing now set to become another element of the ‘green’ trend in the Middle East, it appears that the old jokes can be consigned to history.

ReMaTec2013 exhibition prepares for bumper year The 2013 edition of the ReMaTec remanufacturing show is set to become the largest ever. All signs are that the next ReMaTec reman show in Amsterdam in June will exceed all previous editions since the show’s inception in 2001. Six months before the show’s opening on June 16, 85 per cent of available floor space is booked, the organisers, Amsterdam RAI, have announced. Theo Lingmont, Director of International Exhibitions at RAI Exhibitions told ReMaTecNews: “The ReMaTec project team anticipates a 30 per cent increase compared to ReMaTec2011, which was in itself a record breaking edition. We’re very satisfied with this, indeed. Many new clients clearly recognise the position of the ReMaTec brand as the global platform for remanufacturing.“ So far over 120 companies from 21 different countries have booked stands at ReMaTec 2012, giving the event a genuine international flavour. Moreover, a significant number of prospective exhibitors are expected to confirm their attendance over the next few weeks, the organisers says. In part, the new exhibitors comprise turbocharger and electronic component remanufacturers and suppliers of diagnostic- and cleaning equipment. Companies considering participating in ReMaTec2013 should contact the ReMaTec Project Team at tel.: +31 20-549-1431 or by e-mail rematec@rai.nl.

Grants applicable to US exhibitors at ReMaTec2013 US exhibitors at next year’s ReMaTec2013 remanufacturing show are now eligible to apply for support under the U.S. government’s State Trade and Export Promotion (STEP) Grant Program. The program is, in part, directed at helping small business concerns’ participation in foreign trade missions, market trips and campaigns, export trade shows and other export related activities. The funding under STEP is shared between the federal government in Washington DC and the individual states. “We’re proud to have been certified as an event where U.S. exhibitors can apply for government support,” said Niels Klarenbeek, Domain Manager for Remanufacturing at show organiser RAI Exhibitions. ReMaTec2013, the world’s largest exhibition for remanufacturing, will be held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, from June 16-18, 2013.

“The fact that qualifying U.S. firms within the remanufacturing industry can now apply for government support to make their participation in the show possible means a great deal to us,” explained Niels Klarenbeek. “Firstly, this means that more U.S. companies will be incentivized to exhibit at the show making the event even more attractive for U.S. remanufacturers and suppliers. This could significantly enhance our current U.S. exhibitor base of 18 exhibitors from the United States. Moreover, it’s a clear signal that ReMaTec continues to strengthen its position as the global trade platform for remanufacturing.”

The STEP program Initiated in 2010 the STEP program has been allocated 30 million dollars per year over its first three years. Of this the federal government provides 75 per cent while the states in which

applicants are based, contribute 25 per cent. Michael Thompson, Director Trade Show Certification Program at U.S. Department of Commerce commented: “The U.S. Department of Commerce (USDOC) is very excited about the U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA) STEP Grant Program. In particular, the Program provides a great helping hand to U.S. companies that wish to further their export sales growth through participation in USDOC Trade Promotion Programs, such as Trade Fair Certification, Trade Missions and/or the International Buyer Program.” More information on the STEP Grant Program and how to apply is available at www.sba.gov/about-offices-content/1/2889/ resources/14315. (Prospective) U.S. exhibitors, interested in exhibiting at ReMaTec2013, should contact Jan Van Der Molen, USA agent of ReMaTec2013 at tel.: +1 704-2430236 or by e-mail molen@usarai.com.

ZF – a giant boosts remanufacturing Germany’s ZF Friedrichshafen AG, one of the world’s largest automotive suppliers, has been involved in remanufacturing for decades. That has not diminished the Group’s commitment to reman. On the contrary, the business unit ZF Services is rolling out an expansion programme that will further extend and strengthen its reman operations. ‘The Sustainable Alternative’. That’s the title of a new brochure about its remanufacturing activities issued by ZF Services, the business unit that is responsible for ZF’s reman expertise in the aftersales market. In a clear and concise manner the brochure sets out ZF Services’s focus on remanufacturing and the importance it attaches to this side of its operations. The brochure, however, is only one sign of the German giant’s increasing emphasis on remanufacturing. With 50 years reman activities behind it, the ZF Group is now moving up a gear from its already strong reman base. Over the next year or two the intention is to open new remanufacturing service centers in both Russia and China while at the same time, raising the profile of remanufacturing within as well as outside ZF. “ZF Services takes its responsibility for the entire life cycle of the products it develops and manufactures very seriously,” says Jens Uhl, who has been Head of Remanufacturing and Repair at ZF Services since 2011. “It is our stated objective to reintroduce as many remanufactured products as possible back into the market. Reman also complements the repair of our traditional product-lines like transmissions and axels and, thus, enhances our service product portfolio. We do not only remanufacture components on an industrial scale but, together with well-known partners in the market, also organise the collection of used parts.” Upcoming reman initiatives comprise a new ZF-owned service center in Moscow with advanced workshop technology for automatic transmissions in passenger cars. This is scheduled to open in 2013 with other component types to follow. “Russia is a special market but it’s growing and expectations for the new location are considerable,” Uhl says.

USA and China Moreover, remanufacture of automatic transmissions is also scheduled for the USA and China. On the list is a new gearbox facility to open in 2014 in Shanghai, China, and a massive extension of ZF’s existing facility in the Chicago area, also scheduled for 2014.

ZF is a worldwide automotive supplier of Driveline and Chassis Technology with 121 production companies in 27 countries. In 2011, the Group, which has more than 27.000 employees, achieved sales of 15.5 billion euros. ZF annually invests about five per cent of its sales (2011: 750 million euros) in research and development. ZF Services exploits ZF’s systems expertise in the aftersales market. For the aftermarket business, ZF’s driveline and chassis technology is offered through the product brands Sachs, Lemförder, Boge and ZF Parts.

Remanufacturing and Repair in a cross-function for remanufacturing at ZF Services since 2011.

“We plan a great many things over the next couple of years, but we will do them step-by-step,” he adds. “The brochure is one way of showing our reman ‘umbrella’ because we believe that the business will follow the green trends and we see good prospects for growth in Europe and Asia, and, probably in the US, too.” One example of the scope of its opera-

tions is the fact that ZF has remanufactured in excess of 2 million clutch cover assemblies and discs. Altogether the group remanufactures 20.000 tons of components annually or, as it points out, the equivalent 11,111 VW Golf V! ZF Services not only intends to practice what it teaches within its own ranks. There will, it states, be a strong push to convince

other markets of the value of environmentally compatible remanufacturing. Another focus will be on ‘considering remanufacturing requirements in research and development of new components’, – an issue with which other large remanufacturers are grappling, too. Currently ZF operates twelve reman locations. which are directly connected to ZF Services’ global network comprising 34 service companies, five marketing offices and 650 service partners. The portfolio includes clutches, steering, transmission, mechatronic modules, torque converters and axles.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR

A busy year for remanufacturing At the threshold of 2013 automotive and HD remanufacturers can look back on an eventful 2012 which, in significant respects, moved the industry forward. ReMaTecNews highlight some of the events and developments that leave a footprint on the industry – or even influence its future.

Change at the top at Remy Automotive Europe With effect from January 1, Jef Verelst was named President of Remy Europe in succession to Philippe James who had headed up the European arm of Remy International for five years. Jef Verelst joined leading rotating Jef Verelst electrics supplier Remy in 2000 and in 2007, took charge of OE and Aftermarket Sales, Marketing and Distribution in Europe. Prior to this he had responsibility for

European Purchasing and also worked as Plant Manager at Remy’s remanufacturing plant in Miskolc, Hungary. Towards the end of the year Jef Verelst was further promoted Vice President & General Manager, Europe, with responsibility for coordinating all Remy activities in Europe including sales, customer support, distribution and operations for OE and Aftermarket.

Singapore sets up reman R&D Centre In May Singapore’s government announced the establishment of the Advanced Remanufacturing & Technology Centre (ARTC) which it claimed is the first centre in Asia to look into research and development of technologies for remanufacturing that can be readily adopted by industry. These technologies will enable companies and businesses to translate end-of-life products into ‘good as new’ ones for the market through a sustainable process, con-

tributing to greater cost and materials savings and, potentially, higher profit margins. Six world-class companies, Boeing, RollsRoyce, Siemens Industry Software, ABB, FUCHS Lubricants and Carl Zeiss, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Centre. This is aimed at exploring collaborative R&D to bridge technological gaps in remanufacturing for the aerospace, oil & gas, marine, energy, automotive and engineering industries.

An event for the entire reman industry A stellar line-up of speakers and presentations were in display when the first-ever World Remanufacturing Summit opened its doors at University of Bayreuth in Germany on

September 3rd. Organized by the university’s Chair of Manufacturing and Remanufacturing in partnership with ReMaTecNews, the two day summit, attracted more than 130 academics, industry executives and decision makers from across the world, the US, China, Japan, Europe and Australia. Rarely, if ever, has a similar gathering of the remanufacturing industries taken place. As a result, two more summits will organised in China and the US in 2013 and 2014 before returning to Europe in 2015. In China, Beijing’s National Key Laboratory will host a World Reman Summit in 2013 and in 2014 the event will be organized by the Rochester Attendees from across the world gathered for the World Institute of Technology in New York Remanufacturing Summit in Bayreuth, Germany. State.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR

Caterpillar sets up large reman facility in Singapore Early in the year, Caterpillar, the world’s largest remanufacturing business, extended its reman operations with a new remanufacturing facility in Singapore. The 20,000 square meter (215,278 square foot) building will serve as the regional source for remanufactured major components for large off-highway trucks and other mining equipment, including engines, transmissions, final drives and torque converters. “Remanufacturing is an attractive, growing and sustainable industry. Our investment here is illustration of Caterpillar’s commitment to customers and sustainable development in Asia,” said Greg Folley, Caterpillar Vice-President with responsibility for the Remanufacturing & Components Division.

MERA Pavilion at AAPEX In a new initiative MERA, the remanufacturing division of the US’ Motor and Equipment Manufacturers Association, organised a remanufacturing pavilion at the 2012 AAPEX aftermarket show in Las Vegas from October 30 to November 1. The pavilion which attracted a significant number of exhibitors (including ReMaTecNews and the ReMaTec2013 show in Amsterdam, the Netherlands) was designed to promote the economic, environmental and product performance benefits of remanufactured motor vehicle components.

APRA Europe 25 years For a few days in April, Poland’s third city became the hub of European remanufacturing when APRA Europe celebrated its 25th anniversary. The event was marked by a well-

attended symposium and reman exhibition in the old city of Krakow in South Western Poland on April 23-25. In his first presentation as new Chairman of APRA Europe, Bosch’s Peter Bartel set out his vision for the association’s immediate future, emphasising its role as ‘the voice of remanufacturing’ and outlining its future objectives. “APRA will actively promote the unique advantages of remanufacturing, support free trade for reman products and cores and aim at obtaining financial support for the development of new reman technology,” he promised.

New reman definition FIRM, the European Engine Remanufacturers Association agreed a common definition for remanufacturing. Supported by MERA (Motor and Equipment Remanufacturers Association) and the RIC in the United States, the definition will to a significant extent help to promote remanufacturing as a genuine alternative to ‘new’ and recognize the industry’s benefits across the world.

The definition A remanufactured part fulfils a similar function as the original part. It is restored from an existing part (core), using standardized industrial processes in line with specific technical specifications. A remanufactured part is given the same warranty as a new part and it clearly identifies the part as a remanufactured part and the remanufacturer.

New head of China’s National Key Lab 2012 saw the appointment of Professor Zhu Sheng in succession to the renowned Professor Xu Binshe as Director of China’s National Key Laboratory for Remanufacturing. Zhu Shen will, therefore, play a key role as China continues to develop its remanufacturing base. As a member of China’s Academy of Science, Professor Xu Binshe will, however, continue to exert influence on his country’s endeavours in the field of remanufacturing.

Two of Europe’s well-known remanufacturers, ATP Industries Group Ltd and Autocraft Drivetrain Solutions Ltd in the UK, announced a joint venture partnership for the remanufacture of automotive products for the Chinese market. Based in Guangzhou in industrial Southern China, the venture will provide remanufactured engines, transmissions, components and vehicle electronics for the world’s leading automotive OEMs, the two companies said. Under the name, ATP Autocraft Reman

Solutions, the new company will provide a one-stop-shop for both OEMs and aftermarket customers operating in China who currently are unable to obtain the remanufactured products available to their global network. Until now, due to its strict import barriers, the vast Chinese market has been closed off to most non-Chinese remanufacturers, the two companies added. The joint venture was unveiled at the International Remanufacturing Exhibition in Beijing in September.

Chinese supplier looks towards Europe Having created a solid business supplying components to US remanufacturers over the past eight years, a Chinese company named QI is now turning its attention to the European market. “By establishing ourselves as a trusted partner for some renowned remanufacturers, there is no reason why we should not do the same in the European market,” says Sejong You, a 33-year-old economics, accounting and finance graduate from Jilin Business and Technology College, who founded QI in 2004. Sejong You could be seen as representing a new generation in Chinese remanufacturing. At a time when the Chinese authorities place increasing emphasis on remanufacturing, Sejong You is well aware that his company – and other Chinese companies – must address the issues relating to the quality of Chinese parts. “Yes,” he told ReMaTecNews in a recent conversation, “there has been problems with the quality of some Chinese products. That’s why companies such as ours can only be successful if we focus on quality. If we don’t deliver

Based in Qingdao, QI Automotive employs a staff of 40 with engineering, management and financial skills, and deals with more than 300 suppliers across China. Its buyers, says Sejong, are all skilled quality assessors (60 per cent of the staff are undergraduates) and ensure that all products and suppliers are carefully audited. In January 2012, QI earned the ISO 9001 quality management certification.

The product range comprises brake components, steering, temperature controls, transmissions and engines. A recent addition is an electronic and electrical division and major customers include several world-class names – which Sejong You says, he is not at liberty to disclose. Currently some 90 per cent of QI’s sales are to American markets, although Europe accounts for a rising, albeit still small, share. This looks set to change. “We have done well in the US. Now Europe is next,” Sejong You says.

From being an apprentice auto electrician in a UK workshop to a top European graduate to running electrical rebuilding shops in the US and forming a high-tech joint venture with a Taiwanese partner in China is quite a progression. That, nevertheless, sums up Peter Bain’s career. In just eight years, Bain, a former Chairman of The Automotive Remanufacturers Association, APRA, and his son, Geoff, has succeeded in establishing Miami-based Rand Group Inc. as a force in the market for rectifiers, voltage regulators, diodes and plastics. Rand Group currently employs a workforce of 450 people, mainly in China, and sells its products to OEMs and the aftermarket across the globe. As Bains puts it: “When you combine the Taiwanese expertise in regulators and circuitry with our knowledge of rectifiers, diodes and our understanding of what quality the rebuilder demands, the entire industry will benefit from this joint venture.”

Progress

Peter Bain Starting out as an apprentice auto electrician in the UK, Peter Bain decided to seek broader horizons and moved to Vancouver in Canada to get used to the American type of systems. After five years, he started his own company remanufacturing starters and alternators and related work before moving to California to work for a large manufacturer of starters and alternators. After another few years, the urge to run his own business took over once again as he set up his own starter and alternator business. In 2004, he and a colleague formed the Rand Group Inc.

16 l ReMaTecNews

So far the combination has worked beyond expectations – and the signs are that the progress is set to continue. When the joint venture in China was set up four years ago, the number of employees amounted to 180. Today the figure has nearly trebled. Peter Bain, who served as Chairman of APRA in 2008 believes that the explanation, at least in part, lies in the control which Rand exercises across the entire chain. “In China there are perhaps 1000 different companies that make rectifiers,“ he explains. “To ensure the quality of our products, we decided that we must be fully in control ourselves. That’s why Rand, with our partners, now have four factories which build only our products. This is the only way in which we can be sure that our products meet our quality requirements.” Having proven the viability of Rand’s business concept, Peter and Geoff Bain now focus on the next steps in the company’s development. One is to further consolidate Rand-Tek as a brand name and the other is working closely with customers to assist them solving new challenges. As to branding, the intention is to create a higher profile in the market – which is not always straightforward. As Geoff Bains, explains, Rand-Tek is a ‘brand behind the

business, we believe this is likely to happen more and more. Over the next two years, we will see more of this.”

Challenges With regard to ‘challenges’, Rand-Tek is seeing rising demand for analyzing and developing innovative solutions to challenges as requested by customers. The scenario can even be where a customer outside the automotive and heavy duty segments asks Rand to develop a new chip or circuit board for a specific application. “Because of our expertise within this area, we’re increasingly asked to suggest solutions for applications that have nothing to do with automotive,” Peter Bain said. “As we develop them in-house, we can offer customers completely tailor-made

solutions. In such cases we move into areas of genuine high-tech expertise – using our own diodes and chips.” “I think I can put it like this: Everyday is a happy day – new and exciting.”

Industry Week in Las Vegas – r

By William Schwarck, Editor-in-Chief, ReMaTecNews

At any given time, Las Vegas, the gambling capital of the world, offers visitors endless opportunities for fun and relaxation. However, there is more to Vegas than fun and some activities are less relaxing than others. That, certainly, is recognized by visitors to Industry Week, the annual aftermarket meeting place, which, increasingly, comprises remanufacturing. When thousands of attendees from across the world headed for home in early October, many were ready for a well deserved break. Walking these shows is not fun and games – rather plain, hard work. For remanufacturers, however, Industry Week 2012 will be remembered as the year when AAPEX which, together with the

18 l ReMaTecNews

neighbouring SEMA, is America’s largest aftermarket exhibition event, gained an additional dimension – remanufacturing. Instead of locating its booths in different parts of the huge halls, a number of respected reman companies gathered together in a special reman section, the first of its kind at AAPEX. Organized by MERA (Manufacturers and Equipment Remanufacturers Association) and ERC (Engine Rebuilders Council), the intention was to create a common

platform for the automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing industries. It worked. And more importantly, perhaps, the week demonstrated the value of remanufacturers and their organisations working together.

Big R and Expo Powertrain A few days before and in a different part of town APRA, The Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association, and ATRA, The Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association,

– rolling out the green carpet both benefited from co-locating their Big R and Powertrain Expos. Compared to the huge AAPEX show, of course, both events are small fry within the greater scheme of things. Yet, in respect of networking, seminars, clinics and social get-togethers, both events serve a purpose that goes well beyond the façade. At a point time when the opportunities within the remanufacturing industry, clearly seem to outweigh the challenges, the 2012 Industry Week, therefore, sent out a signal of some consequence. As John Chalifoux, MERA’s President, said: “The Remanufacturing Industry is rolling-out the green carpet at AAPEX.” Which, of course, did not apply only to the colour of the floor space around the AAPEX reman section. With their huge range of lectures and seminars at Big R and the Powertrain Expo in Bally’s Hotel, Industry Week 2012 offered something for everybody in remanufacturing. Throughout, these events demonstrated that the demand for updating knowledge and learning new is as strong as ever, if not

stronger. Considering the constant changes facing remanufacturers, this was one of the encouraging signs emanating from the exhibition halls in Las Vegas this year. To sum up: At Industry Week 2012 a number of remanufacturing companies intent on demonstrating the benefits and value of reman, was considerable. Add to this, the interest from visitors reported by many reman exhibitors and the ongoing

discussions concerning cooperation among reman organisations around the globe. It all combines to make the outlook for 2013 a very interesting one.

US government – report on reman On November 28, 2012, the US government published its long-awaited report on remanufacturing ‘Remanufactured Goods: An Overview of the U.S. and Global Industries, Markets and Trade’. Completed for the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), the report provides an overview of U.S. remanufactured goods industries and markets, including U.S. remanufacturing production and employment, estimates of U.S. and global trade in remanufactured goods, and factors affecting trends in the trade of remanufactured goods. Here are some of the report’s key points: • The United States is the world’s largest producer, consumer and exporter of remanufactured goods. • Remanufacturing is an industrial process that restores end-of-life goods to original working (like new) condition. • Remanufacturing occurs across a diverse range of industry sectors in the United States, but is more common in sectors making capital-intensive, durable products that have relatively longer product life cycles. • The top three industry sectors that account

for remanufacturing activity in the United States are aerospace, heavy duty and offroad (HDOR) equipment, and motor vehicle parts. Main findings and observations: • U.S. production of remanufactured goods totaled at least $43.0 billion in 2011. • U.S. remanufacturing activities supported at least 180,000 full-time jobs in the U.S. in 2011. • U.S. exports of remanufactured goods totaled $11.7 billion in 2011, up 50 per cent compared with 2009. • Almost 40 per cent of U.S. exports of remanufactured goods went to free trade agreement (FTA) partners. • Foreign remanufacturers invested in the U.S. account for a notable portion of trade in remanufactured goods and cores. • Trade in remanufactured goods is significantly affected by regulatory barriers in foreign markets, and the price and availability of cores. • Although numerous factors affect the competitiveness of U.S. remanufacturers, the availability and relative price of cores is

critical to all sectors and in all markets. • The U.S. and Europe account for the bulk of global remanufacturing and trade, but other countries are developing their own remanufacturing industries. • Foreign direct investment (FDI) in U.S. remanufacturing supported over 22,000 full-time jobs in 2011; U.S. direct investment abroad was also substantial. In a comment by MERA, the Motor and Equipment Remanufacturers Association, John Chalifoux, MERA’s President and COO John Chalifoux said: “We will use the findings in this important report on the remanufacturing industry to John Chalifoux continue to promote the environmental, economic and product performance benefits of remanufactured products.”

Meritor expands reman Meritor is further consolidating its North American remanufacturing operations and intends to create a centre of excellence in Plainfield, Indiana. The company has announced the transfer of production operations from its remanufacturing plant in Mississauga, Ontario Canada by March 31, 2013. As a result of the decision, Meritor plans to invest approximately $1.4 million in the Plainfield facility while creating approximately 82 new jobs during 2012 and 2013. The company has already invested more than $8 million in process upgrades to its global operations in the past five years, including $2.7 million earlier this year in new equipment for its Plainfield plant which remanufactures commercial truck components.

“We believe this investment will help us improve efficiency while better serving our customers in today’s competitive landscape,” said Doug Wolma, General Manager, Global Aftermarket Operations. “At the same time, this move will strengthen our global remanufacturing footprint.”

Global portfolio Meritor’s global remanufacturing operations currently include eight sites in five countries producing a portfolio of drivetrain and wheelend components. More than 30,000 tons of metal are recycled annually in Meritor’s remanufacturing operations worldwide, and the company recycles 90 per cent of all waste from its operations. More than 40,000 tons of cores, or original components, are processed at Meritor remanufacturing facilities annually.

Reman Surprise Gift As a lighthearted initiative Sales Manager Eva Barten, ReMaTecNews, invited the business partners of ReMaTecNews to identify a vehicle with its engine. The correct answer would then receive a ‘surprise’ gift. The question was: “What kind of vehicle (brand, type, date, etc.) belonged to this engine when this picture was taken? It has to do with remanufacturing and the vehicle is probably not what you think it is.” The vehicle in fact is a 1952 Oldsmobile Rocket – which none of the respondents managed to identify. Granted, this was not an easy challenge. With regards to the engine, however, readers revealed considerable technical expertise as well as the occasional sense of humour. Not everyone, of course, came up with the correct answer but many came pretty close and the winner was spot on: Eric IJbema, NMB Motoren Holland, The Netherlands – who came up with the only correct answer: D4AE H350 Hyundai.

D4AE H350 Hyundai.

Congratulations to the winner who will receive a free logo in ReMaTecNews. An extra one-off prize for the most original answer is for Michael Hadley, Eurolec components, UK: “I don’t know the engine, but the belly belongs to... of... Do I win a prize?” And thanks to the other participants, whose answers showed imagination as well as expertise. Here are some of them: • “Looks like a Hyundai engine of some sort. As for the vehicle my best guess is that it’s some 1950’s American engine bay.” (John Collins, Auto Enterprises, UK); • “It is a 1950’s Chevy re-powered with a Hyundai Diesel engine. Probably this picture was taken in Cuba. Brand: Chevrolet. Type:

Deluxe. Year: 1952” (Tony Benet, Asysum, Spain); • “We think that this is a Hyundai Industrial Engine, D4AF 2600 CC with a turbocharger on it.” (Cor, MRT Engines, Holland); • “The vehicle looks like an FX4 taxi with a cockney cabbie cleaning it.” The engine would appear to be a Hyundai.” (Helen Smith, SS Components Ltd, UK); • “1954 Chevrolet Bel Air” (Reinout Meijers, Remy International, Inc.); • “Looks like an old Hyundai diesel fitted to an older fifties USA pickup truck. Maybe a Ford (Alan Smart, ATP UK). Thanks to all for investing time and effort in our End-of-Year competition.

APRA Europe

New APRA Chairman – Nick S Persuading the public and political leaders of the benefits of reman is high on new chairman’s agenda. By tradition, chairmen of APRA, the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association in the US, are hands-on remanufacturers or experienced reman suppliers themselves. Nick Staub, who will preside over APRA as its Chairman for 2012/2013, is no exception. Not only has 49-year old Staub, worked

for Romaine Electrics in Kent, Washington State, since 1982 and as President/CEO since1989, he’s also the son of a previous Chairman, John Staub. And one of three brothers who, at some stage, have all worked for Romaine. It’s clearly the head of a family firm whose roots go back a long way, that will

serve as APRA Chairman for the coming year. “Yes, my father, John Staub, was Chairman of APRA back in 1986 and was a member of APRA since 1948, so it is really nice to follow in his footsteps,” Nick Staub commented. “Indeed, it’s is an honour for me to serve as Chairman.”

Recognition John Staub takes on the chairmanship at a time when the reman industry faces a range of challenges and where remanufacturers look for solutions domestically as well as internationally. Gaining further recognition among consumers is one of them and Nick Staub is well aware of it. “APRA in the US has a good strong board and with the new APRA leadership in Europe and Asia I believe we’re well placed to continue to increase the public’s knowledge of the benefits of remanufacturing,” he says. “One of our goals over the next few years, therefore, is to try and solidify the message about remanufacturing to consumers and well as to politicians. Working together with other organisations, we can get the message across.” He accepts that this is no easy task. Attracting the attention of political decisionmakers in the US is expensive and requires time, effort and dedication. Equally, approaching consumers directly to ‘get the message across’, is no simple matter. Yet, Staub is confident that consumers are, increasingly, recognising the value of reman.

Choice “I believe, that consumers are becoming more conscious of ‘green’, he says. “They realise that they have a choice and that they can make a difference. We have to continue to make this point to them.”

Proud to be a remanufacturer

k Staub Making an impact on the political process in Washington and on local levels throughout the United States is another task. Fortunately, recent decisions in favour of remanufacturing by state and city authorities and the publication of a major report on remanufacturing by the Office of the US Trade Representative, demonstrate that public attention on reman is on the rise in the US. Nevertheless, much remains to be done. “It seems to be that Europe is, perhaps, a little ahead of us in this respect – that they have a stronger voice when dealing with the authorities, Staub says. “The new Chairman of APRA Europe, Peter Bartel, has already added a tremendous amount to our goals and we intend also to work closer with people in other areas, including, for instance, ReMaTec, because we need to bring in a more global approach. “My goal is to reach out to the small rebuilder and help grow our membership base, making our industry stronger by uniting all segments of our industry toward our common goal, he adds.

New members APRA Europe welcomes the following new members: Ferrocratlic d.o.o., Dolenjske, Slovinia Kyzen, Maldegem, Belgium Meritor, DĂźbendorf, Switzerland Borg Automotive, Silkeborg, Denmark DRI, Odense, Denmark Lucas, UK/Denmark Koller + Schwemmer, Nuremberg, Germany

Remanufacturing is a sustainable industry – an industry that more than meets the requirements of the future in terms of saving raw materials and energy, reducing green house effects, providing employment for (local) people as well as offering products at a reasonable price to end users. In other words: precisely what society is looking for. In many important respects, remanufacturing is a blue print for industry in general, not just for the automotive aftermarket. When looking at future demand it is clear, that we have to try to remanufacture as much as we possible, avoid scrapping as many

defect units as we can and reduce the number of new units manufactured. Because the reputation of our industry is a key parameter for success, we must not be afraid of branding ourselves as ‘remanufactured’. It would, indeed, be regrettable if we entered into a discussion about renaming remanufacturing, an established industry which, in fact, richly meets the demand of the future. The acceptance by the end user is a critical factor for our success. It is important that consumers are proud to purchase second or third life products – in which case he or she will, inevitably, look towards ‘remanufactured’. As society, increasingly, takes responsibility for

By Peter Bartel, Chairman, APRA Europe

protecting the environment and limiting green house gases, repairing a vehicle with a second life product has to be ‘sexy’. Nevertheless, quite often we have to explain why the quality of a remanufactured product is equal to a new original unit and clearly better to most new aftermarket units. We can, however, only convince workshops and motorists of this if we promote the concept of remanufacturing in strong and coherent terms - if we state clearly that we are proud to be remanufacturers. We must do so in positive manner which emphasises that: • Remanufacturing is fighting a daily battle to give a second life to products, that are frequently designed to fulfill only the minimum requirements of the end user; • Remanufacturers find technical solutions to fix bugs in original units, the root cause of unexpected, early failure; • We are providing remanufactured units for vehicles even when original parts are not longer available; • The reman industry offers spare parts for at a reasonable price point for end users; • We are limiting global warming; • We are protecting regional labor by not outsourcing to low cost locations. In short: to create awareness of the advantages of our business we must find the appropriate – and common – terms for a positive message which can be continously communicated. Day by day. Week by week. Month by month. The remanufacturing industry must present a clear and positive image to avoid damaging confusion. The first step is to make sure that we are proud to be remanufacturers.

APRA workshop in Almelo, The Netherlands APRA Europe will organise a workshop in Almelo, The Netherlands, on March 13 and 14, 2013. The workshop will offer a range of presentations by professional speakers on the European reman market, lean remanufacturing, remanufacturing of electronics & mechatronics as well as automatic transmissions and other components.

The programme will include plant tours to mechatronics and electronics remanufacturer ACtronics and transmissions remanufacturer Ganzeboom Transmissies. For more information and registration of what promises to become a rewarding experience for all participants, please visit www.apra-europe.org.

By Volker Schittenhelm, Head of Information, FIRM

The reman network is going global The 1st World Reman Summit in Bayreuth, Germany, in early September, gathered a large number of big players in the global reman industry. OEMs, TIER I-suppliers, representatives of the IRAM (Independent Reman Aftermarket), institutions, research centers, universities and last but not least associations and federations. Our thanks go to the organiser, University of Bayreuth, in cooperation with the Rochester Institute of Technology, New York, and the National Key Laboratory for Remanufacturing in Beijing. Indeed, over the next few years each partner will host successive summits – which means that Europe is now linked with America and China in the efforts to promoting reman. What a tremendous development! And this is not even the full picture. Across the continents, the reman trade associations are working increasingly together, too. In the US: APRA, MERA, PERA, AERA which, between them are backed by a very large number of members are all active in reman. In Europe, FIRM is part of reman troika with Clepa and APRA-Europe taking on the mantle of Europe’s voice of reman!

The reman world is coming closer together. From left: Dr. Nabil Nasr of RIT in New York State, USA, Professor Zhu Sheng of Beijing's National Key Laboratory, China, and Professor Rolf Steinhilper of University of Bayreuth, Germany, at the World Remanufacturing Summit in September.

interest in joining us. International engine part manufacturers and dealers are also seeing the benefits of becoming members of a reman association.

Working together

Competitors

We believe that working together with others is the only way for FIRM to maintain a position of strength: together APRA – Europe and FIRM-members account for 22.000 employees and a total turn-over estimated at between 2 and 4 billion euros. If you add the Clepa membership’s 10.000 employees we’re talking about a turn-over in the EU of between 6 and 7 billion euros. Clearly, with its ordinary members, corporate and associate members FIRM is part of an important sector – as well as of a global reman network! The recruitment campaign for new members will help raising the awareness of FIRM and its aims and results. So far, promising contacts and meetings with Brazilian, South African and New Zealand engine reman associations have indicated their

The reason? The answer is clear. Representing the independent (engine) reman industry in Brussels, is crucial to the industry’s future because this is where much of your daily business is decided. The OEMs, our real competitors, are endeavouring to persuade the EU-commission to distinguish between their own reman operations and ‘the rest’, by which they basically mean the independent aftermarket, i.e. us! The reman definition, recently announced by FIRM, APRA and CLEPA is one way with which to fight monopolistic OEMactivities. Access to repair and maintenance Information (RMI) is an ongoing battle to safeguard our members’ work. And the next battle is already on the horizon: the e-call! This is planned as an emergency call that is automatically activated in cars in the event

28 l ReMaTecNews

of an accident and will come into force from 2015 on (under a new EU-directive). Once again, the threat comes from the OEMs in that they will be able to ‘mis-use’ the telemetric systems monitoring cars’ or engine’s main functions designed to warn drivers of impending damage or failures and thus to contact the nearest workshop. We can all guess which type workshop that will be!

Key task To keep the aftermarket open and accessible for independent remanufacturer, therefore, remains a key task for us in Brussels. If we do not raise our voice on behalf of our members in Brussels in the face of the competition from the OEMs, many, perhaps even most, SMEs will not survive! In summary: the more we work together across the reman industry, the more partners and connections we have and the more global the reman network extends, the stronger we are. From 2012, FIRM is very much part of this network. See the benefits – and the difference – we can make?

NEWS FROM OTHER ORGANISATIONS

Green light on far recruitment drive The Federation of Automotive Remanufacturers (FAR) in the UK has commenced an industry wide recruitment campaign. Established following an industry conference last May, FAR hopes to draw together remanufacturing specialists from a broad range of activities across the automotive spectrum and unite them in a common cause. “The remanufacturing sector is a green industry with a strong heritage but it requires the support and encouragement of a Government that does not really understand it, or the contribution already being made towards emissions cuts, parts recycling and landfill reduction,” says Alan Johnston, President of the Federation of Engine Remanufacturers. “Meetings between FAR representatives and Government departments have already been scheduled and we have been encouraged by the interest they have expressed.” The FER is acting as the conduit for communications in the early phases of the development of the new representative organisation.

FAR hopes to hear from remanufacturers involved in any aspect of remanufacturing. To date, early interest has been registered among rotating electrics, brake systems, engine remanufacturers, air con systems and fuel injection systems specialists. An FAR brochure, that sets out the aims and objectives of the new representative body and explains the benefits for members and the remanufacturing sector in general, has just been published. Several component suppliers have stepped forward to help with distribution of the brochure, which will take place from the end of November 2012. This will be supported by e-mailed newsletters, website links, advertising and the use of social networks.

FER’s Brian Ludford to take retirement Brian Ludford, the General Secretary of FER, the UK’s Engine Remanufacturers Association, has announced his retirement. After 12 years

Brian Ludford

as day-to-day Manager of FER, Ludford, plans to step down from his full-time position in January. “I have always planned to retire from full time employment, when I’m 65 and that will happen in late January,” Brian Ludford said. “I will, however, be continue with certain projects that I have been working on as well as providing a contact for members to give help and support, as I have done up to now.” Following Ludford’s departure, FER’s Board has decided to change the organisation’s administration. As a result the secretarial work will be handed over to a professional organisation – at least on a temporary basis. The solution will then be reviewed in twelve months. “I have been Secretary for just over twelve years now and have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it,” Ludford said. “To me, the members have not just been members but also friends and I want to thank them for the help, support, advice and friendship, they have given me.”
