EDITOR’S LETTER ReMaTecNews Volume 11 – Number 4 – June 2011 ReMaTecNews, the only international news magazine dedicated to automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing worldwide, is an independent channel for news, views and developments within the remanufacturing industry.

Broader, bigger and better

Published by: RAI Langfords B.V. P.O. Box 10099 1001 EB Amsterdam The Netherlands In association with

As this edition of ReMaTecNews contains the Show Guide for the ReMaTec2011 remanufacturing exhibition in Amsterdam, it’s hardly surprising that much of it is devoted to the event. This, however, is not just because the show organiser Amsterdam RAI is the parent company of RAI Langfords, the publisher behind ReMaTecNews. To a significant extent, this year’s show also reflects the growing internationalisation and increasing interdependency of the remanufacturing industry. Moreover, a look at the exhibitor list and the array of different events will reveal that in its tenth year the ReMaTec2011 exhibition is broader, bigger and better than ever before. In fact, what began as an experiment a decade ago has become an established item on the agenda of the automotive industry – perhaps the most important of its kind in the world. Trade shows, as everyone knows, should not merely be considered shop windows for exhibitors. The good ones are far more than that. They are markets. They are information channels. They are meeting places. You could even call them crucial for developing a business. With its workshops, seminars, conferences and – not least – the huge opportunities for networking, June in Amsterdam will, for a few days, become the global centre for remanufactured parts and engines, large and small. As for ReMaTecNews’ own presence at the show, we, too, wish to move with the times and bring a fresh touch to our annual Remanufacturer of the Year award, one of the industry’s most prestigious accolades. This year, therefore, we take great pleasure in welcoming Mr. Michael Cardone Jr., Chairman of the world’s largest privately owned reman company Cardone Industries, as guest speaker at our award ceremony on Monday June 20. With his lifelong experience in automotive remanufacturing Michael Cardone Jr. will be an inspiring voice at a time when reman is gaining increasing attention from governments, car makers and consumers world-wide.

Key to future growth A Yorkshire-based remanufacturer of allmakes turbochargers sees sales of units into the commercial vehicle market as the key to future growth and used its first ever appearance on a stand at the recent CV Show in Birmingham to promote its message. AET Turbos sells remanufactured turbochargers and is an authorised repairer for a wide range of turbocharger manufacturers. Most of its products are sold into the UK market, but a proportion of its sales are sold to international clients. AET Turbos’ Sales Executive Dale Walker told ReMaTecNews that although around

80 per cent of the Wakefield company’s business is in sales of remanufactured units to the passenger car market, the long-term goal is to increase its focus on CV turbochargers and related unit sales in the marine and plant markets. These could replace sales of remanufactured turbochargers into the passenger car market. “Assuming you have the expertise, in the CV market there is less competition, smaller volumes to deal with, greater value per unit and better margins,” he said. Cummins opens Indian megasite Cummins India Limited (CIL), a manufacturer of engines, generators and related technologies, recently inaugurated three new plants at its 300 acre Megasite in Phaltan, Pune, India. The three plants include an engine rebuild centre and a reconditioning facility for remanufacturing engines and components. The projects at the site that have been awarded mega project status by the government of Maharashtra, is designed to house ongoing and future expansions of the Cummins Group in India. The engine rebuild centre will rebuild

engines from 19 litres (K19) up to 60 litres (QSK60 series) and also repair all other Cummins manufactured engine models. The third facility, ReCon India, will offer professionally remanufactured, high quality engines and components built to stringent specification which will result in minimum down time in repairing the engine and components. “Our association with India dates back nearly half a century. Particularly, over the last few years, our operations in India have expanded and grown multi-fold owing to several positive factors such as a rapidly growing

economy, a vast talent pool and the investments we have been making in new products and services,” said Tim Solso, Chairman and CEO, Cummins Inc. “Furthermore, the concept of colocating our businesses at a common campus offers the advantage of scale and greater synergy to our operations. We believe a project of the scale of the megasite involving investments of approximately US$300 million over the next few years, is a demonstration of our commitment to further strengthen our long and valued association with India.”

More reman at Shanghai exhibition Organized by Messe Frankfurt (Shanghai) and the China National Automotive Industry International Corporation (CNAICO), this year’s Automechanika Show in Shanghai will include new halls for remanufacturing, accessories, and new energy. The show will be held from December 7-10 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre. To help exhibitors explore the potential of the fast growing eco-friendly vehicle and renewable energy markets which enjoys strong support from the Chinese government, the show will include remanufacturing and new energy vehicle product zones, the organisers said. Automechanika Shanghai expects to attract 3,600 exhibitors, a 15 per cent increase compared to the previous show and will cover 160,000 square meters in 13 halls. The show has confirmed overseas pavilions from Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand and the US. So far a record number of exhibitors include Affinia, Meritor, Changan

Truck dealer with ‘green’ reman ambitions An Iveco truck dealer from the UK is turning demand for ‘second line’ spare parts into a business opportunity that could benefit local remanufacturing specialists. Birmingham-based Guest Trucks has been supplying recycled engines, gearboxes, axles plus ‘a full range of components’ to customers with much older vehicles who are ‘understandably reluctant to replace some existing parts with brand new ones’. But speaking at the CV Show 2011 in Birmingham, Group Parts Manager Carl Holland told ReMaTecNews: “As an Iveco truck supplier, we sell new parts and will continue to do so, but we recognise there is a demand for quality parts that are not brand new if the user can be assured about the quality. Guest Trucks researched the market,

Carl Holland of Guest Trucks.

discovered there were no other Iveco dealers providing such a service and entered the used truck spares market just over a year ago.

“We realised that if we did not do it, somebody else would, he added. “It also helps to raise our ‘green’ profile. The company currently sells parts removed from sales-exchanged trucks that have been broken up at its Shefford Road site. The site, which is fully licensed as a breaker of vehicles, is now the centre of its Guest Recycled Parts business and advertises ‘up to 70% saving’ on new parts. Mr. Holland says the company’s longterm aim is not to replace its new parts sales but to develop its recycled parts business model for end users running much older vehicles. He hopes to use the expertise of local remanufacturers, who can re-engineer and supply such parts under warranty. “Some gearboxes are already sent to remanufacturers, he adds.

Xu Binshe – the ‘father’ of r No single individual is, perhaps, responsible for China’s conversion to the cause of remanufacturing. If there was one, it would be Professor Xu Binshe of China’s National Key Laboratory in Beijing. ReMaTecNews met him in Beijing.

Back in the 1950s when China was still recovering from the civil war - and well before the cultural revolution that caused such immense damage to the country’s economy - a young engineer started researching into better ways of repairing machinery at Harbin University in North Eastern China. Not only did he succeed, along the way he also came to realise the benefits of remanufacturing. Years later as his career progressed, he became seen as the Father of Remanufacturing in China, a key advisor on remanufacturing to the Chinese leadership as it attempts to establish remanufacturing as an important component in its next Five-Year plan. Head of what is officially called the ‘Key Laboratory of Equipment Remanufacturing Technology and National Defense Science and Technology’, the now 80 year old Professor Xu Binshe, exerts very substantial influence within China’s technology sector and academic world. And not only here. Holding the rank of general in China’s National Liberation Army, Xu Binshe is well connected outside academia, too. “The government listens to him. Without him remanufacturing in China would not be where it is today,” a colleague puts it. Others point out his crucial role in explaining the need for sustainability, environmental protection, resource preservation and in promoting remanufacturing in a country which, until now, has been preoccupied with industrial and economic development rather than the environment. “There are two sides to this,” he explains during a lengthy conversation in a Beijing restaurant. “For two hundred years manufacturing has been important to China in order to raise living standards. The other side is that manufacturing creates pollution. In fact, 70 per cent of all pollution comes from manufacturing processes. Because the right scientific and technology developments are in place remanufacturing is now becoming important.”

Honours Showered with scientific honours within as well as outside China, Professor Xu has written more than 20 books about engineering and reman-related subjects as well as authored more than 800 academic papers and submitted 20 patents. His academic

f remanufacturing in China credentials and other honours are numerous and include membership of the Chinese Academy of Science, Vice-Chairman of China Association of Plant Engineering, Adjunct Professor of more than 10 colleges and universities, Head of National Development and Promotion Center of Equipment Production, Teaching and Research, Honorary Professor of Warsaw University in Poland. The list goes on. Having travelled extensively and maintaining close relations with some large international companies, he’s well aware of China’s reputation in respect of pollution. Nevertheless, he’s confident that this will change with time. “Remember, we were poor before,” Xu Binshe says. “Yes, there was a problem with

pollution. With China’s economic growth, however, we have the money to combat pollution. I would also remind you that the government is enforcing strict pollution and environmental controls. And remanufacturing is part of the battle against pollution.” To questions regarding the efficiency of China’s ambitions for its reman industry, Professor Xu is emphatic that there will be action behind the words: “When Premier Wen Jiabao became head of the government five years ago, he initiated a long-term forecast for China’s development up to 2020. 2000 Scientists were involved in the work which included a plan for resource and energy requirements. So the government understands the need for a

circular economy – and remanufacturing is an important part of it.” How can the central government ensure that its reman policies are implemented out in the provinces which are often far from China’s big centres? “The provincial governments are influential in terms of environmental protection measures of which remanufacturing is part and they agree that remanufacturing is important. We must not forget either, that the central government gives grants of 10 per cent to encourage reman projects. All this has been written into law. We haven’t achieved everything we want yet. But as far as remanufacturing is concerned, we’re making significant progress.”

Reman comes of age in China China’s leadership prepares the country for a remanufacturing revolution. ReMaTecNews reports from China’s first major international reman conference. It’s already the world’s largest automotive market. Within ten years, according to some predictions, its economy could be the largest on the globe. Travel around China and it’s easy to see why the first is a fact and the second more than a possibility. China loves cars – and it needs them. Many of them. Around one million new vehicles arrive on China’s streets every month and the figure is set to rise. Sooner or later, they will all have to be repaired. This is why, on a Wednesday morning in late April, Xie Zhenhua stands on a stage in a conference room in the eastern city of Hangzhou and talks about automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing to a large international gathering. This is no ordinary event. In fact, the occasion is China’s first major international conference on remanufacturing. And Xie Zhenhua’s presence alone is proof that China is waking up to the need for remanufacturing. As Vice Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), China’s top economic planning body, he plays a key role in the country’s economic development – and he is here to tell a worldwide audience that his country is about to take a great leap forward as far as remanufacturing is concerned. “The NDRC is now drafting a series of plans concerning the development of the country’s circular economy, the emerging

industries of strategic importance, energy savings, and environmental protection. These plans all look at remanufacturing as an important element in China’s next five-year plan from 2011 to 2015 because remanufacturing saves resources and creates higher value.”

New approach Official interest in remanufacturing has been somewhat slow to emerge. For years, the import of, and trading in, cores, the lifeblood of the reman industry, has been banned by the authorities for fear of making China the dumping ground for useless – and polluting – scrap. The message from Xie Zhenhua to the audience in the conference hall is that many of the past obstacles are about to be eliminated.

“The development goals, major tasks and safeguarding measures for remanufacturing over the next five-year period aim at promoting a sound, orderly and rapid development of the remanufacturing industry, increasing the number of qualified remanufactured products and promoting the recycling of old parts,” Xie told the meeting.

often heavily polluted areas, the environmental concerns of China’s rising middle classes and the stigmatism of being considered one of the world’s largest polluters. Vehicles statistics also provide ample inspiration. At yearend 2010, China had more than 80 million

motor vehicles, while major construction machinery exceeded 3 million units. If, as Xie points out, remanufacturing in China was to account for just 5 per cent of the market it would represent a value of 40 billion yuan. Beyond that the sky is the limit, not least

because remanufacturing requires support from other sectors such as professional recycling, disassembling and cleaning, “The country has to consider establishing industrial bases to concentrate on related sectors,” Xie says referring to the need to set up improved logistics and distribution networks for remanufacturers and their customers. This is currently one of the main obstacles to a successful remanufacturing industry in China. China is a large country and not everything the central government decides materialises in the far distant corners. Many decisions, including licences and permissions, are also taken locally by provincial authorities. Nevertheless, the impetus created by the central government in Beijing is bound to have a very significant impact on the potential for the future of remanufacturing in China. As one observer at the meeting remarked: “A revolution in remanufactured equipment quality, efficiency and eco-sustainability is underway in China.”

What’s important when r A turbocharger is designed and built to match the service life of the engine. However, the high-tech components in the exhaust gas system are exposed to several risk factors which could lead to their failure. Such factors include foreign bodies that penetrate the turbine, dirty oil, a faulty oil supply or excessively high exhaust gas temperatures. This makes the mechanic’s know-how all that more important. Here are some practical tips and tricks for an effective replacement.

Important: analysis A precondition for a successful repair is that the cause of the failure has been identified and eliminated – otherwise there is a risk that the new turbocharger will fail again after a short time.

Indispensable: cleanliness Even the smallest of foreign bodies acts like a projectile at the enormously high speeds of the turbine and compressor wheels. The air filter therefore has to be replaced in every case. Just as important is the careful cleaning of the entire intake and fresh air system to and from the charge air cooler including the removal of all foreign bodies from the exhaust pipe.

A must: lubrication The rotor shaft bearing needs engine oil. Tip: pour a little engine oil into the oil inlet bore before installing the new turbocharger, place a clean cloth over this – and then distribute the oil in the bearings with a short blast from a compressed air gun. After installing the turbocharger and before connecting the oil supply, pour some more engine oil into the oil inlet bore.

What goes in, must come out The turbocharger needs engine oil for lubrica-

tion and cooling and this is supplied by the oil pump in the engine. The oil is returned to the circuit via the oil return pipe. The complete oil return pipe and connection to the crankcase must be laid without any kinks and must be free from deposits so that the oil is transported smoothly. If the return flow is disturbed this leads to blockages and the turbocharger loses oil through the turbine and compressor wheels. Imminent consequences include major engine damage. Tip: a new oil return pipe is just as sensible an investment as a new charge air cooler. Another tip: there should be no excess pressure in the crankcase. If the crankcase vent is dirty an excess pressure builds up that hinders the return flow of oil in the turbocharger. The turbocharger starts to lose oil through the turbine and compressor wheels as soon as an excess pressure of only a few millibars is measured at the dipstick tube with a manometer.

All tight? All connections on the turbocharger must be tight so that oil, air, exhaust gases and, depending on the type, cooling water can be passed through the turbocharger cleanly, safely and without losses (each MAHLE turbocharger has a matching mounting

kit – consisting of seals as well as exactly fitting builton parts, for example stud bolts, nuts, etc.). Important: only ever use these original sets of gaskets. And never use the old gaskets again – they are often deformed or porous and therefore cannot guarantee the necessary seal. Sealing compound or liquid sealers are also forbidden on the turbocharger. Sealing compound may reduce the cross-section of the bores – and parts of the sealing compound may become loose and block the supply of oil. The consequence: major damage to the turbocharger.

Cover lost? The oil supply and return lines often run very close to the turbocharger. Car manufacturers thus protect the oil pipes with shielding. This should also be checked when replacing the turbocharger: is it still in place and undamaged?

New turbocharger – new oil A new turbocharger should always be given new oil – and a new oil filter. This ensures that any foreign bodies in the oil system are eliminated and cannot damage the new turbocharger (after all, the old turbocharger is faulty – which may be due to infiltrated foreign bodies or particles). Tip: ‘If a little is good, then more is better’ does not hold true for the oil level! Because if the oil level in the engine is too

n replacing a turbocharger

high this leads to disturbances of the compression ratio in the engine. This forces engine oil into the turbine and compressor of the turbocharger where it collects in the charge air cooler. If this oil is sucked in and burnt again by the engine this could lead to major engine damage.

Man the pumps Once the turbocharger has been fitted, the oil and possibly water lines connected and the air and exhaust gas line connected to the turbocharger, the oil can be changed and the cooling system vented. Ignition must be prevented when the engine is started – for example by removing the fuel pump’s fuse or relay. Then turn the engine with the starter until oil pressure has been built up. If the engine is being started for the first time we recommend that you leave the engine idling for 2 minutes before opening the throttle to ensure the supply of oil.

A screw loose? You then have to check whether all screws and connections are tight and that there are no leaks. Tip: check the tight fit of all screws again after running for approx. 20 hours or 1,000 km.

Long-distance runner Every engine profits from being run for a longer period of time. A turbocharged engine takes poorly to short trips because after a cold start the unburnt fuel and condensation water collects in the engine oil. This worsens the tribological properties of the oil and reduces the carrying capacity of the lube oil film. These unwanted companions only disappear at oil temperatures over 80 °C. If the oil temperature stays below this level for a longer period of time, as is the case with short trips, this constitutes a risk for the turbocharger: the bearings of the crankshaft and camshaft and rotor shaft in the turbocharger become worn. At low outside temperatures the emulsion of engine oil and condensation water in the oil return pipe of the turbocharger and in the crankcase vent can also freeze leading to disturbed engine compression ratios.

Biodiesel? A higher risk for engine oil and turbocharger Vegetable oils do not evaporate – and unburnt vegetable oils collect in the engine oil. This becomes viscous as of a certain concentration and the lubrication system collapses soon afterwards. This means much shorter intervals between oil changes if vegetable oils are used as a fuel. Pour in a little engine oil before installation to lubricate the rotor shaft bearing. Then place a clean cloth over the oil inlet bore … and distribute the oil in the bearings with a shot of compressed air. Customer care: And finally, a few tips from experts that you can pass on to your turbo customers – because satisfied drivers keep coming back. Idling prophylaxis: let the engine run at idling speed for around 30 seconds before setting off to ensure the supply of oil to the turbocharger – and 30 seconds idling after a fast trip on the motorway cools the turbocharger. Short trip compensation: drivers whose journeys are mainly short trips should take a longer trip at least once a week to give the engine oil the chance to regenerate. Heater output optimisation: to help get the engine up to working temperature faster in winter you should wait for 3 minutes before switching the heater on – it will then heat up quicker too. Major reman conference in Glasgow One of the largest remanufacturing conferences ever will be held at Strathclyde University in Glasgow, Scotland, between July 27 and July 29, 2011. Gathering a wide audience of remanufacturing practitioners, business leaders and academics from across the world, the Icor International Conference on Remanufacturing has four key objectives: 1. To identify and document the state of the art and the key issues in remanufacturing research and practice. 2. To establish an effective channel of communication between academic and research institutions, industry and persons concerned with the challenges and significance of remanufacturing. 3. To enable practical, industry-relevant solutions by facilitating multidisciplinary discussions between academia and industry. 4. To facilitate discussions and networks that would assist the establishment of the intellectual foundation and direction for the longer-term development of remanufacturing research. “The conference aims, for the first time, to gather together the global knowledge and expertise in remanufacturing practice and

‘Identifying key issues in remanufacturing research and practice’ research, from industry and academia, thus providing a unique opportunity to obtain exciting and innovative experiences to forward developments in technology and research in sustainable manufacture and waste management,“ said Dr. Winifred Ijomah, the conference’s chair. “The

international dimension is emphasized in order to overcome cultural and national barriers, and to meet the needs of global sustainability given the significant adverse ecological impacts of accelerating global industrialization.” The Icor conference’s target audience comprises engineers interested in remanufacturing strategy, technique, and technology, business leaders and decision-makers within the general reuse and conventional manufacturing environments, researchers interested in the environmental dimensions or implications of remanufacturing and management scholars interested in remanufacturing from the operations research (OR) perspective, e.g., modelling of reverse supply chains. Professor Rolf Steinhilper of the University of Bayreuth will give one of the key note speeches on automotive remanufacturing.

OPPORTUNITIES

One ‘building block’ for all configurations

Inside BMW’s modular engine Recently ReMaTecNews had the opportunity to sample a BMW X1 with the Bavarian Motor Works’ latest engine. Confusingly designated ‘28i’, it has only 2 litres of swept capacity, four cylinders and what BMW refers to as ‘TwinPower’ turbocharging. Now I realise that except for the turbo people who might anticipate to see, if not twice the business they have now, then still a healthy growth in turnover, this might not sound terribly exciting. What we have here is, in effect, a forebear to a concept which will be the cornerstone of every single mainstream engine in the future BMW and Mini line up. Two litres and four cylinders make 500 cc capacity per cylinder. From 2012 on, this will be the magic number for BMW engines. Petrol or diesel, longitudinally or transversely installed in the vehicle – all will be based on the same set of mechanicals with a whopping 60 per cent parts commonality for all petrol engines as well as for all diesels, with 40 per cent of all parts shared throughout the complete engine range irrespective of fuel. Components like the alumini-

um crankshaft bedplates, oil pans, intake tracts and external fittings are all shared. Moreover, all engines will be based on the same combustion chamber design. Like Lego, BMW starts with a single cylinder of 500 cc capacity to make 1.5 litre ‘triples’, 2.0 litre four bangers and 3.0 litre sixin-lines . Like our ‘28i’ two litre four cylinder, all will feature TwinPower turbocharging (which raises efficiency by separating the exhaust gas flow of two adjacent cylinders and thus not allowing them to disturb each other in the camshaft ‘overlap’ phase) and high-pressure direct fuel injection. Slight

✍ By Eric van Spelde, Technical Writer variations in ancillary equipment and ECU mapping are being used to vary the output per cylinder between 40 and 67 hp for petrol engines, and 27 to 54 hp for diesels. Torque output per cylinder can vary between 75 and 100 Nm per cylinder for petrol engines, and 60-100 Nm for diesels. This way, extremely fuel efficient versions or high performance derivatives can be created without changing engine capacity. Traditionally, BMWs have their engines installed in a north-south configuration, while Minis, of course, have transversely installed drivetrains. Also, within the new BMW 1series that bows in 2013, front wheel drive variants with an emphasis on practicality and interior space will appear alongside the more driver-centric rear-wheel drive models and there is also the new BMW i-range of advanced ‘efficient mobility’ concepts to consider. Hence, the four cylinder engines are designed to be installed longitudinally or transversely, while the three cylinders only come in a transverse format and the sixes are for longitudinal installations exclusively. The latter – both with four and six cylinder engines – will come with the existing sixspeed manual gearboxes and ZF eight-speed automatics, while the transmissions for the transverse drivelines are as yet unspecified (but one wouldn’t bet against the use of the Getrag six-speed manual gearbox currently in the Minis for other, upcoming transverseengined BMW products, too).

One high-end sedan that is already available with a four-cylinder (diesel) engine and also with a hybrid drivetrain, is aforementioned Mercedes S-Class. The next generation of this model, which is scheduled to launch in 2013, will include a plug-in hybrid.

The S 500 Plug-In Hybrid, of which a concept version was launched in the current shape S-Class, has a 60 kW electric motor which is supported by a 3.5 litre V6 petrol engine. Apart from the new models, the current SRX crossover and the next-generation CTS midsize sedan will be up for an Ecotec transplant. The new downsizing strategy at Cadillac is not only a reaction to luxury imports – mainly Audi – increasingly starting to sell more fuel-efficient, turbocharged four cylinder models in the US but would also be very

APRA Europe

NEWS 10 Years together and still going strong

ReMaTec and APRA When planning for the future it is always important to review the past in order to learn from it. When Torben Bush-Hansen approached APRA President Bill Gager and Fernand Weiland at the International Big R show in November 1999 and asked our views on creating a reman exhibition in Europe he could not have chosen a better time to get our full support. APRA Europe, which was formed in 1987, was already well established at that time so the idea of adding an exhibition opportunity for our members was a perfect fit for us! We were lucky to find a Danish company which was prepared to invest in the idea and Amsterdam RAI agreed to host (and later to acquire) the show. It was a win/win situation for all and we believe we could not have made better choices. The first exhibition took place in 2001 and over the past 10 years we have developed an event which will reach an optimum level this year. There is always room for new ideas and new ways of doing things, and we are pleased to see that the RAI and ReMaTec are taking that approach. For an association such as APRA it is important to have regular symposiums, seminars, plant visits and exhibitions, but it is also important to have external media for communication across the industry and the public in general. William Schwarck, ReMaTecNews’ Editor-in-Chief, recently said: “The remanufacturing industry needs to become more open in its communication.” With ReMaTecNews William has superbly achieved this

✍ By Peter Larsen and Fernand Weiland objective. Together with the active support of Publisher Luuk Aleva they have to date created 56 editions which all fulfill the needs of our industry.

Demanding audience The stagnating visitor numbers at two previous ReMaTec exhibitions have taught us how demanding our audience is. This year’s exhibition has clearly changed and now looks highly promising. It’s not only an exhibition but also an information platform where visitors can get important news that will help them develop their businesses and prepare them for future challenges. Currently, the many new developments emanating from car manufacturers makes life tough for remanufacturers. APRA as well as the ReMaTec exhibition and ReMaTecNews must follow these developments closely

because one of our key obligations is provide our industry with the best possible solutions. Education might be crucial but we must also accept that scientific projects will be a key to creating the tools for understanding and, ultimately, being able to remanufacture tomorrow’s parts. Despite all new competition in the market, APRA will stay ‘The Voice of Remanufacturing’ as we have been since 1941. See you in Amsterdam!

Ambitions high for Chinese remanufacturing

The forum in Hangzhou, 250 kilometres south of Shanghai, attracted a broad audience from America, Europe and China.

During the recent International Forum in Hangzhou (China), Fernand Weiland, ViceChairman of APRA Europe, had the honour of moderating a unique discussion with panelists from Caterpillar (China), Cummins (China), JFP Engine Remanufacturing (China), and VW China. The discussions (including questions from the audience) centred on the current and future Remanufacturing Industry in China.

Among the several interesting conclusions from the panel were: • Foreign and Chinese companies alike are keen to invest in remanufacturing in China. • How do companies obtain a licence for remanufacturing? The consensus was that additional pilot schemes (i.e. licencees) must be granted. Moreover, regulations regarding core trading and import of cores in China remain difficult.

• Remanufacturing in China must improve productivity and therefore needs to be driven less by regulations and more by profitability. It was evident from the debate that in order for the Chinese Government to meet its stated high goals new plans need to be discussed - ideally with the assistance of the remanufacturing industry.

APRA at ReMaTec2011 As in previous years, APRA is organising a variety of events and offers during the ReMaTec show in Amsterdam. Besides it’s stand where interested parties can obtain information and advice on APRA’s offer, this years‘ show also comprises a number of interesting and useful presentations of value

to remanufacturers. These will unfold at the APRA seminar on the morning of Monday, June 20. For further information, please visit www.apra-europe.org For the complete seminar programme see page 31.

ReMaTec2011 Show Guide

Welcome On behalf of Amsterdam RAI, I am delighted to welcome you to ReMaTec2011. We are extremely proud that the support for the ReMaTec show is stronger than ever. We have more exhibitors and a significantly bigger show floor than before. The Project Team was able to sign quite a few big names in the industry demonstrating that remanufacturing is top of mind and there is an even brighter future ahead. Earlier this year, ReMaTec2011 commissioned an independent study amongst Dutch car owners about remanufacturing. A majority of car users (53%) have no idea what remanufactured parts are, let alone the financial and environmental benefits. After being explained the meaning of remanufacturing, 71% say they would (definitely) consider the use of remanufactured parts. When educated on the opinion of experts on the value of remanufacturing this percentage rises to 81%. The survey shows that consumers still have little knowledge about remanufacturing, but they are very receptive to the idea - once explained properly. There is so much to gain for this industry once the consumer gets involved and we feel ReMaTec2011 can contribute to that by bringing the industry together and the topic to many agendas.

Ids Boersma

Last – and most certainly not least – I would like to thank all of our exhibitors, international partners, agents and affiliates for their continuous support and abiding efforts. On to the business of the day, the focus is firmly on ReMaTec2011 offering three days of bustling networking! I wish you an enjoyable and profitable show and a leisurely time in Amsterdam.

Ids Boersma Managing Director Exhibitions Amsterdam RAI

Remanufacturing is key It has been so rewarding for us this year, to organise a show that turns out to be a record-breaking edition. Welcoming more exhibitors than ever, we are able to offer you the best and the most complete show in the industry. By introducing the ReMaTec Theatre, we are hosting a record number of educational sessions and away from the show floor several different conferences take place. In three days, you will have the opportunity to meet, discuss, do business and share ideas that will benefit the industry. I am sure that this edition will be the start of a lot of new innovations and offer plenty opportunities. Warmest thanks are also, as always, due to our partners - especially APRA and FIRM - for their help and support in making ReMaTec2011 a leading remanufacturing business event.

Niels Klarenbeek

Thank you for visiting ReMaTec2011. Have a great show! On behalf of the entire Project Team

ReMaTec2011 Show Guide They won ReMaTecNews’ Remanufacturer of the Year Award

Who will win in 2011? The stage is set for the ReMaTecNews’ Remanufacturer of the Year Award 2011. The curtain will go up on Monday June 20 when, during the ReMaTec2011 show in Amsterdam, we name the winner of this year’s prestigious award. Besides the honour and the accompanying trophy, however, the winners have also benefited in more intangible ways. Looking back, here are the comments from the past winners. As in previous years, the award honours an individual or organisation that has served the automotive reman sector with distinction within fields such as innovation, technical excellence, customer service and commitment to the promotion of the qualities of remanufacturing. Since its inception in 2005, ReMaTecNews’ Remanufacturer of the Year Award for excellence in automotive remanufacturing has established itself as one of the highest accolades in automotive remanufacturing. Besides the honour and the accompanying trophy, how do the winning individuals or companies benefit from the award? We decided to ask the four winners, all in their different ways important players in the art of remanufacturing. WINNER 2005: Jens Lindholm of Holger Christiansen A/S, Esbjerg, Denmark To receive the ReMaTec Award 2005 was clearly a big honour, not only for me as an

34 l ReMaTecNews

individual, but for the whole company, especially because it was also the first ever ‘reman’ award. Essentially it was testimony to the reliability and performance of the whole company. With hindsight, it is somewhat difficult to evaluate what the award has meant to our company. I don't really believe that it has directly led to any additional sales, although the ReMaTecNews Award was clearly noticed by many customers, but I do know for a fact that it has meant something for our employees and made them feel even prouder of their company. WINNER 2006: MS Motor Service International, the aftermarket division of Kolbenschmidt Pieburg AG, Germany. Alexander Schäfer Motor Service International received the Remanufacturer of the Year award for its knowledge and support of remanufacturing. The prize from ReMaTecNews gave a clear signal that we are on the right road and provided us with one more reason to continue with

our training programmes and technical information support. Electronic diagnostic systems, exhaust gas technology and the reconditioning of aluminium engines are still examples of the main challenges to remanufacturers today and in the future. The outcome of such challenges will decide the future of spare parts business and, of course, sales. This is a good reason for Motor Service to keep customers updated on detailed information that allows them to survive and prosper. WINNER 2007: Martin Detzen, owner of MD Rebuilt, Illingen, Germany Having worked in remanufacturing since 1979, I have always put customer service and customer satisfaction at the top of the agenda. We know that quality carries its obligations and we’re proud that MD Rebuilt is both ISO TS 16 949 and DIN EN ISO 14001 certified. It shows our commitment. While winning the Remanufacturer of the Year award came as a complete surprise for everybody, we saw it as a confirmation

ReMaTec2011 Show Guide

and appreciation of everything we have done in remanufacturing over the years. The award attracted considerable attention from customers and suppliers. There is no doubt that the award has created a positive image of MD Rebuilt and helped to raise our business profile considerably and, therefore, to underpin MD's position in the market place. WINNER 2008: Johan van Gerven, Owner, MRT Engines, Veghel, The Netherlands In August 2008, I had the pleasure of receiving the ‘Remanufacturer of the Year 2008’ award from ReMaTecNews. I was extremely honoured and proud as the award symbolizes the importance of producing products of high quality. I also see it as an acknowledgement of our effort to expand production at our plant in Poland and create new jobs there - which is not always easy to do these days considering the current economic situation. Because the Polish business is so successful, it also reflects well on the standards of the factory in The Netherlands. For me personally, the honour is a reward for all the hard work involved in creating the best remanufactured engines available. The trophy has a special place in my office in The Netherlands, where people often remark on it. I am genuinely grateful to have received it and I will do my best to live up to it. WINNER 2009: Dr. Carsten Bücker, Managing Director and majority owner of the BU DRIVE Group The presentation of the Remanufacturer of the Year Award in 2009 was a surprise

to me. I see the award as a confirmation of BU DRIVE’s efforts to raise the quality and technology of industrial remanufacturing, especially concerning environmental protection. BU DRIVE’s business philosophy is a commitment to continue with this strategic focus. For this reason the BU DRIVE Group with its business operations in Germany, Europe and USA has built up a long-term strategic alliance with the Fraunhofer project group process innovation, and the University of Bayreuth’s chair manufacturing and remanufacturing technology. This cooperative effort aims to develop innovative power train remanufacturing technologies and put them into industrial practice. WINNER 2010: Francois Augnet, TRW, Vice-President Europe and Asia/Pacific Rather than see this as an award for myself, I see it as a recognition of what we’re trying to do at TRW and the time and energy we, as a team, have invested in promoting remanufacturing. I also view it as a recognition of the industry as a whole and our effort to promote remanufacturing on several levels - in Brussels, Geneva and in the European Parliament.

ReMaTec2011 Show Guide Michael Cardone Jr. to present Remanufacturer of the Year award As Chairman and Chief Executive of Cardone Industries Inc., one could well imagine Michael Cardone Jr. spending most of his working hours dealing with long-term strategy, high level administration and key business decisions. He does…. Nevertheless, behind the façade, there is more to Michael Cardone Jr. who, together with his father, Michael Snr., founded the company that bears their name in 1969 and built it into the world’s largest independent automotive remanufacturing company. Throughout his career, Michael Jr. has remained a mechanic at heart, a man who likes to get his hands dirty and cares deeply about the products his company makes and sells. Someone who describes his mission simply as ‘being the best remanufacturer in the world’. Participants in ReMaTecNews’ Remanufacturer of the Year event on Monday, June 20 will meet Michael Cardone Jr. when, as guest of honour, he presents ReMaTecNews2011 Remanufacturer of the Year award to the winner. On this occasion, Michael Cardone Jr. will bring his experience of the world of automotive remanufacturing to a European and international audience.

Remanufacturing in society Not for the first time, though. A sought-after speaker at numerous industry events, Michael Cardone Jr. has done much to spread the message of the benefits of remanufacturing beyond automotive remanufacturing circles and that includes the role of remanufacturing in the conservation of resources, environmental protection and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. As the reman industry has started to promote the environmental benefits of remanufacturing in a more cohesive way,

Michael Cardone’s voice has been joined by others. Nevertheless, his claim that ‘remanufacturing is America’s best kept secret to economic growth’ remains a forceful reminder of what remanufacturing can do for society.

Cardone Industries Today Cardone Industries has 5,000 employees from 51 nationalities and factories in the US, Mexico and Europe (the UK and Belgium) with 3,200 people based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, alone, making the company one of the city‘s largest employers.

William Schwarck, Editor-in-Chief, ReMaTecNews, and Chairman of the Panel of Judges for the Remanufacturer of the Year award:

‘It goes without saying that we’re looking forward to presenting the award for 2011 to a person or a business that has contributed significantly to the cause of automotive or heavy duty remanufacturing. Not least at a time when green issues, the conservation of resources, recycling and environmental responsibility are at the forefront of public concerns, the award is intended to draw attention to the obvious benefits of automotive remanufacturing.’ In association with

William Schwarck has been Chairman of the Panel of Judges from the outset. Fernand Weiland, Vice-Chairman APRA Europe The founder of APRA’s European Division in 1989, Fernand Weiland has been an influential force in European automotive remanufacturing for decades and the organizer of numerous seminars and workshops. He also instigated APRA’s new Electronics and Mechatronics Division. Having served as Chairman of APRA Europe since its inception, Fernand Weiland last year stepped down as Chairman to become Vice-Chairman. He has been a member of the judging panel for the Remanufacturer of the Year award since the start. ReMaTec2011 Show Guide

ReMaTec2011 premieres the EV/HYBRID pavilion While a rapidly increasing number of HYBRID powered vehicles are driving on the European roads, the automotive industry is launching various new HYBRID types, and many governments are highly supporting the launch of Electrical Vehicles (EV’s), the remanufacturing industry cannot neglect the challenges of HYBRID and EV remanufacturing. What will be the consequences for remanufacturers? Which items will be suitable for remanufacturing? What about safety in your workshop when dismantling high voltage parts? What are the challenges and constraints for the development of EV’s? An answer to these (and many other) questions will be given at the EV/HYBRID pavilion at ReMaTec2011. The EV/HYBRID pavilion is powered by Automotive Career Development Center (ACDC) from the United States and EV2drive from The Netherlands. EV2drive is a company that deals since 2008 with research, development, training and service of electric and hybrid powered vehicles. EV2drive now has extensive experience in providing “train the trainer” training, research and service to electric and hybrid powered vehicles. This includes the entire drive-train, battery charging systems, battery technologies, management techniques to the various electric motor technologies. Most of the variation in technological development and application have been studied and mapped, including the shops safety items. Additionally Ev2drive acts as a project manager within the project known EMX. The aim is development of a brush-less electric power-train for a dirt-bike ACDC will be represented at the EV/Hybrid pavilion by founder Craig van Batenburg. ACDC provides training since 2000 in the area of hybrid vehicles. Craig Van Batenburg has owned Van Batenburg’s Garage Inc., Worcester, Mass., for more than 23 years. He is an ASE Certified Master Technician with L1 certification and is an Accredited Automotive Manager (AAM). He now conducts training classes internationally for the aftermarket for more than ten years and is considered to be a leader in the high voltage electrification of vehicles. Given the enormous amount of accumulated practical experience, Ev2drive and ACDC developed into the knowledge centres for automotive industry and government. Through workshops, they present a realistic picture of the future developments of electric and hybrid vehicles and consequences for remanufacturers. This allows government and industry to make informed decisions for future investments. Both ACDC and EV2drive will also be staging seminars at the ReMaTec Theatre.

Parts selection competition Which reman professional is the very best at parts selection? ReMaTec2011 initiates the Parts Selection Competition. In a lively atmosphere Core suppliers, Wholesalers, Parts specialists, Core buyers, Remanufacturers and Manufacturers are given the opportunity to match OE part numbers to the corresponding parts within a limited time. Do you think you’ll know OE part numbers by heart? Come to booth 11.834 and compete! At the demonstration area 15 different starters and alternators will be exhibited, all marked with a temporary code. Participants will be given a stocklist of OE part numbers and will need to match the parts with their corresponding OE part numbers while time is recorded. Competition time: Daily: 11.30 – 12.00 and 15.30 – 16.00 hrs The Parts Selection Competition is powered by Autoenterprises, La Concorde, Pos Service Holland, Robert Bosch GmbH and RG GmbH.
