EDITOR’S LETTER
ReMaTecNews Volume 13 – Number 4 – August 2013
A long-term vision? There are times when concepts become projects and projects become reality. Could it be that remanufacturing is becoming an example?
ReMaTecNews, the only international news magazine and website dedicated to automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing worldwide, is an independent channel for news, views and developments within the remanufacturing industry. Published by: Amsterdam RAI B.V. P.O. Box 77777 1070 MS Amsterdam The Netherlands In association with
The question arises because APRA, the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association, and Amsterdam RAI, the organisers of the ReMaTec exhibitions (and owner of ReMaTecNews) have announced their intention to strengthen their joint activities in international markets. (See opposite page). For the writer of these lines, it has been a somewhat bewildering experience to watch the profusion of reman-related organisations and associations operating across the world. It’s not that they fail to serve their members. It’s not that they fail to promote the industry and it’s not that they’re less professionally competent than they ought to be. In fact, by far the majority have provided excellent services to their respective memberships and they deserve much praise for that. Where the doubt creeps in is in two areas in particular. One relates to the awareness of remanufacturing among the public, the end consumers, those that order replacement parts from repair shops and other suppliers. The other is in the recognition of the genuine value of remanufacturing to society on the political level, among national and local politicians, bureaucrats and administrators of the public purse. Within these two areas it’s relevant to ask the question: Has enough been done? In some ways, yes. In other ways, less so. Recent years have seen a range of positive developments. Closer cooperation between APRA in the US and APRA Europe is one example. Another is the closer contact between APRA’s European wing and CLEPA, the Brussels-based trade association for Europe’s aftermarket. A third is the establishment of MERA in USA and APRA Asia/Pacific with headquarters in China. All encouraging signs of an industry that realises the need to get closer together. Yet as some surveys indicate, there is much to do before remanufacturing becomes a natural choice for motorists and truck owners worldwide – and before politicians, bureaucrats, even the aftermarket itself, see reman for what it is: A force for good for the environment, for employment and for the economy of millions of motorists everywhere. To overcome this, the closest possible relationship between all players within the industry is required. Whether large or small, all have an interest in presenting the industry on a global platform. One that speaks on behalf of remanufacturers everywhere. The new initiative by APRA and Amsterdam RAI/ReMaTec deserves the support of remanufacturers. So does the two parties’ invitation to other reman organisations to join in a common effort. A World Reman Council? Perhaps not in the short-term. Perhaps not even for the foreseeable future. Even so, without a vision, you’re unlikely to get to where you want to be.

NEWS FROM THE INDUSTRY
APRA and ReMaTec heading for international expansion
The growing interest in remanufacturing is creating significant opportunities for new partnerships between reman associations across the world. This, in turn, will assist the development of automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing. This is the thinking behind a number of new, joint initiatives by APRA, the international association of automotive remanufacturers, and Amsterdam RAI, the organiser of the biennial ReMaTec exhibitions. APRA and Amsterdam RAI are now investigating ways of merging and expanding their operations on a global scale. The two parties expect to announce further details later in 2013. The deliberations primarily focus on two areas: adapting the show concept of one single exhibition for the entire remanufacturing industry to regions outside Europe and inviting other remanufacturing organisations to take part in a joint effort.
Sustainable manufacturing “Growing interest in sustainable manufacturing will expand remanufactured products and we’re focused on supporting this expansion with strong industry backing. We see a growing interest in remanufacturing from businesses as an important part of their strategy and our efforts are designed to provide a broad and inclusive platform for business, academia and industry associations to support and advance the industry,” said Tim Roth, APRA’s treasurer. “We believe that joining forces to develop business opportunities for remanufacturing industries worldwide is the right way to go,” stated Peter Bartel, Chairman of APRA Europe, one of APRA’s three regional divisions (the others being APRA USA and APRA Asia Pacific). Bartel added: “As more and more remanufacturers become globally active, APRA is well positioned to contribute more to the
development of remanufacturing. Together with RAI, with which we have worked closely since 2005, we’re confident that the ReMaTec concept of bringing all aspects of automotive and HD reman together under one roof can be exported to other markets.” Exploring opportunities “The time is ripe to look into other markets and our clients are requesting this. Given our successful partnership with APRA, combined with their global presence, it is only logical that we explore these opportunities together,” said Niels Klarenbeek, Domain Manager, Remanufacturing, at Amsterdam RAI. “The aim is to include other reman associations and stakeholders wherever possible so that the eventual outcome will be a strong, unified force that can speak on behalf of the global reman industry and its practitioners everywhere.” For full coverage of ReMaTec2013, see page 11
Owners not offered reman products A survey undertaken by UK remanufacturer BBA has uncovered that the vast majority of car owners are never offered electronics remanufacturing as an option by their mechanics. In a poll of 2,538 drivers, “A somewhat surprising 89% of drivers claimed that they had never been offered this service from their mechanic. Of this number, 96% of the drivers confessed that they didn’t know remanufacturing was an option, and that they just assumed the only option with an electronic fault is a replacement,” BBA said.
In a consequent poll of 1,290 UK mechanics, 70% of respondents admitted to BBA Reman that they often fail to offer their customers the option of remanufacturing. 19% of the mechanics confessed that they themselves were unaware so many electronic car parts can be remanufactured for much cheaper than replacing. Furthermore, mechanics in the South of England were slightly more likely to suggest remanufacturing to customers, and least likely to in Scotland and Wales.
Chris Swan, founder of BBA Reman, said: ‘The results of our research highlights the reason we are committed to informing car owners across the world about the work we carry out here at BBA Reman.’ ‘By choosing automotive remanufacturing over the more traditional option of replacing an electronic car part, not only can our customers save a substantial amount of money, they can also help the environment.”

NEWS FROM THE INDUSTRY
New man at the helm at Borg Automotive With effect from 1 August, a new CEO is taking over at the Denmark-based Borg Automotive Group. The new head of the company, which has seen rapid expansion in recent years, is Lars Bugge, a 53-yearold civil engineer and a graduate in Business Administration. Bugge has previously worked for Unichains, the NKG Group and the VJR Group, the manufacturers of the renowned Velux windows in Denmark. “Although I haven’t worked in the remanufacturing industry before, I am very attracted by Borg’s strong corporate values,” Lars Bugge told ReMaTecNews. “Borg is one of the best players in the business and I find it easy to identify with their product. I’m now looking forward taking up my new position, not least because I find the remanufacturing business concept highly inspiring and believe that it has a very promising future indeed.” Lars Bugge will succeed Johannes Mortensen, who retired as CEO at the end of June after five years in the post. According to
the company, the change at the top does not signal any change to its strategies. “We continue to be geared for growth,” it said. Planned change “Johannes Mortensen’s departure has been planned for several years and the board has had plenty of time to find his replacement,” said Borg Chairman Lars Aagaard. Borg Automotive A/S is one of Europe’s largest suppliers of starters, alternators, brake calipers, steering and air conditioning pumps. In recent years the group has seen considerable expansion and expects to generate sales of DKK 500 (€ 67 million) in the current financial year. Borg Automotive is headquartered in Silkeborg in Jutland with production in Poland, Belgium and the UK. In 2011, the company acquired the former Cardone Europe’s activities, including the power steering operations outside Birmingham, UK. Borg sells its products under the brand names Elstock and DRI, with Elstock accounting for starters, alternators, ACP Compressors and brake calipers and DRI specializing in rotating electrics. Besides the automotive and HD
aftermarket the ranges cover applications for construction, agricultural and marine engines.

Old company – New name For 25 years the name MD Rebuilt – after its founder Martin Detzen – occupied a prominent role in the European market for remanufactured rotating electrics. Detzen himself, who died in 2012, even became a winner of ReMaTecNews’ Remanufacturer of the Year award in 2007. Today the MD Rebuilt name has disappeared. But the company hasn’t. Instead of “MD”, the name Artec is signposted outside the building in the town of Illingen in south western Germany. The company, however, remains intact – and continues to grow. The name change is one of the consequences of the takeover in 2012 by a partnership consisting of Jens Lindholm, the former head of Denmark’s Holger Christiansen A/S and Hella, the large German manufacturer of parts to the motor industry. But this is not the only one. At a rapid pace, MD/Artec has seen a change in its management, an increase in its workforce from 110 to around 134 with more to come, and an extensive reorganisation of its corporate structure. This includes the introduction
of new logistical tools, a thorough review of OE and engine numbers, a new layout for sorting and warehousing areas and comprehensive changes to the company’s IT systems. Artec also gained the important TS 6949 certification in December. Along the way, the driveline programme has been removed. “The company needed a clearer vision and a stronger focus,” Managing Director Jens Lindholm, also a former winner of the Remanufacturer of the Year award, told ReMaTecNews. “It has all been very time consuming, not to say tough, but we believe that we’re now on the right track towards our goal – supplying our range at the right quality, at the right price, at the right time. We’re not yet anywhere near the finishing line but we’re getting there. ‘‘

Remanufacturing moves forward in UAE Automechanika Dubai demonstrates growing interest in remanufacturing New player, Oweis Autoparts, received the exhibition’s Best Stand award at the recent Automechanika show in Dubai. In addition, its stand received what it likely to be the heaviest traffic ever for a remanufacturing company in the Middle East. Among the visitors was a lineup of important individuals in the Emirates’ government and financial sectors. “It is clear that the region is waking up to the benefits of remanufacturing,” said Oweis Zahran, the young business executive who is looking to revolutionise the acceptance of remanufacturing in the Middle East as described in ReMaTecNews edition 8, 2012. At the end of the exhibition, Oweis Autoparts announced firm sales at a value of USD 2 million as well as impending negotiations with a number of government departments in the UAE. Amongst these is Dubai’s Ministry of Road and Transport that runs a fleet of 3,000 commercial vehicles. “The potential is immense,” said Oweis Zah-
ran, “and during certain periods, we had visitors queuing to receive more information about remanufacturing. I believe that we’re now opening doors to the region for remanufacturing. In addition to the environmental benefits, there is also significant focus on the savings potential for remanufactured spare parts. We invested USD 400,000 in being present at the show and are more than satisfied with the outcome.” Oweis Autoparts, an offshoot of the billion dollar UAE conglomerate, MZ Holding, started three years ago with three employees and now employs a workforce of 75. It currently operates departments and distribution centres in Dubai and Bahrain. The inauguration of a further distribution centre in Qatar’s capital, Doha, is scheduled for later this year. “The aim continues to be to establish a presence throughout the Middle East and Northern Africa,” Oweis Zahran said. “However, we want to do this in a stable and consistent way rather than aggressively. Our contacts with a large number of
government departments here have made us very optimistic as to the future.”
At his stand at Automechanika Dubai Oweis Zahran (center) received a visit from His Excellency H.E. Matar Al-Tayer, Chairman & Executive Director of Dubai’s Road & Transit Authority and an important figure in Dubai’s government (right).

Remanufacturer of the Year 2013: An “Apollo moment” for Alan Smart Founder and Chairman of the UK’s ATP Group is named ReMaTecNews’ Remanufacturer of the Year. Following months of hard and technically demanding work, the owner of ATP Group recently sat down with a customer, the representative of a global car maker to celebrate the project’s conclusion. “Alan,” the satisfied client said, “this is your Apollo moment,” drawing a parallel with the technological achievements of America’s legendary space programme. Until then, that was, perhaps, the ultimate compliment paid to Alan Smart, founder/owner of ATP Group in Staffordshire in Central England, during his professional career. On 16 June, 69-year-old Alan Smart had a second “Apollo moment”. On the evening of the opening day of ReMaTec2013, he was named ReMaTecNews’ “Remanufacturer of the Year”, the reman industry’s ultimate accolade. At the award ceremony, Alan Smart received the award trophy from another leading industry
figure, last year’s winner, Doug Wolma, General Manager for Remanufacturing, Meritor Inc. “Alan Smart has built ATP into a top-class company with strong focus on advanced technologies and innovation within the fields of transmissions, torque converters and electro-mechanical components,” said William Schwarck, Editor-in-Chief, ReMaTecNews, and Chairman of the award jury. The other members of the jury are Fernand Weiland of APRA Europe and Volker Schittenhelm of FIRM. “ATP offers technical expertise, innovative skills and commercial flair in equal proportions. Under Alan Smart’s leadership, ATP has evolved into a highly respected business of which the reman industry can genuinely be proud. Alan Smart is a worthy winner of ReMaTecNews’ 2013 award,” William Schwarck said. ”This is one of the proudest days of my life,” Alan Smart said in an emotional
speech to the more than 100 industry executives attending the event. “I have to say, of course, that this could not have happened without the incredible efforts of everybody who works at ATP. We have a truly worldclass workforce that is totally focused on innovation and quality.” Founded in the early seventies, ATP remanufactures a broad range of advanced vehicle components, including automatic and manual transmissions, torque converters, hydro and electro-mechanical sub-assemblies, electronics and ABS and EMS units. It also builds its own range of test equipment. The company counts a number of big-name OEMs among its customers and also sells remanufactured products to the independent aftermarket. ATP has subsidiaries in the US and China. The forthcoming edition of ReMaTecNews, Edition 5 2013, will contain an interview with Alan Smart.

ReMaTec2013 – when the world’s remanufacturers met This year’s ReMaTec show exceeded all previous editions.
From left: Niels Klarenbeek, Domain Manager, Remanufacturing at Amsterdam RAI, Theo Lingmont, Director International Exhibitions, Amsterdam RAI, Philippe Maerten, President, FIRM, and Peter Bartel, Chairman,APRA Europe. If anybody was to question the strength of the automotive and heavy duty reman industry, a visit to Amsterdam on 16, 17 and 18 June would be a salutary lesson. Never before in its twelve years of existence, the 2013 ReMaTec remanufacturing show proved to be an international meeting point for remanufacturers, their suppliers and customers across the world – and a demonstration of the industry’s confidence in itself. This has to be the conclusion after three days where exhibitors and visitors alike declared their satisfaction with the results achieved, the quality of the visitors and their determination to return two years from now. In fact, several companies, large and small, signed up for the 2015 event before departing the exhibition hall. “We couldn’t have wished for a better outcome,” said Niels Klarenbeek, the ReMaTec show manager. “ReMaTec is clearly an ideal platform for bringing together industry, education and research. Feedback during and after the show has been overwhelmingly positive, and the prospects for the next show, two years from now, are bright indeed.” The bottom line after three days of networking, negotiating, professional lectures and general exchange of information and views was this:
• • • •
Visitors: 3,551 or an increase of 30 per cent Countries represented: 63 Exhibitors: 187 – up by 25 per cent. Attendees at presentations/seminars at the ReMaTec theatre: 500
Exhibitors included a range of the industry’s major players, including Meritor, TRW, Valeo, BU Drive and Cummins who all reported heavy traffic at their stands as well as promising leads from a broad range of enquiries. Medium-sized and smaller businesses reported solid results, not least some of the American exhibitors whose numbers showed a marked increase. One example was provided by Mike Halston of GFX Corporation in Alabama who said: “Going to ReMaTec now for seven times and watching how it has grown into a true international got-to-go-to show has truly been a satisfying experience. Its growth has been fun to watch and remarkable.” World-class manufacturers Compared to previous years, the number of visitors representing world-class vehicle manufacturers also showed a rise, perhaps not surprisingly as the “big boys” are increasingly adopting a serious approach to remanufacturing. During the three days,
names such as BMW, Daimler AG, Ford, GM, Hyundai, Jaguar Land Rover, JCB, John Deere and Komatsu all dispatched representatives to ReMaTec. The same was the case with MAN Truck & Bus, Opel, PACCAR, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Scania, Toyota, Volvo Cars, Volvo Construction Equipment and Volvo Trucks. Nearer to home, Professor Carsten Bucker, CEO of Germany’s BU Drive – and a former winner of ReMaTecNews Remanufacturer of the Year award - added: “This is the No.1 exhibition for global remanufacturing. If you want to be in this business and want to grow internationally, you have to be here.” It appears that other parts of the world agree. At the initiative of the US Commercial Service, the US Embassy facilitated a visit by a 25 member delegation of Iraqi business people for the purpose of learning more about the reman industry. Likewise, three different Chinese delegations attended the show which included presentations on Chinese remanufacturing followed by a Chinese dinner organised by APRA Asia/Pacific. As the remanufacturing industry becomes ever more global in scope, the same is the case with the ReMaTec concept. More than ever, this year’s event in Amsterdam provided the proof.

ACTRONICS SHIFTS UP ANOTHER GEAR ACtronics, the Dutch electronics remanufacturer, was clearly proud of its new high-tech stand with its impressive glass tile floor where the tiles changed colour as you walked on them. “The idea is for our stand to reflect our clean approach and professionalism to remanufacturing,” said General Manager Thijs Jasink. ACtronics introduced a range of new products at the show, starting with their new aftermarket turbo actuator to be released at the end of July. Later this year, the DSG 7 (7 gears) will be added to its remanufacturing programme. “Last but not least, we have decided to go HIGH VOLTAGE (24 volts),” added Jasink. “We believe we’re the first remanufacturer to offer a full range of products within the Commercial Vehicle Range.

ASV RICH SEAM OF CORE FROM EUROPEAN CARS
GB US REMANUFACTURER SEEKS CORE PARTNERS IN EUROPE
Kevork Bahzian, Sam Soghomonian Australian core supplier, ASV Euro Car Parts, has appointed its first full time regional sales manager in Europe to lead a new European sales initiative. Regional Sales Manager Kevork Bahzian will operate from Germany and he can look forward to a warm welcome at the offices of remanufacturers throughout Europe, many of whom will be keen to get access to ASV stocks. ASV imports core from Japan and New Zealand, but is bursting at the seams with significant stocks of good quality core materials bought from insurance companies in Australia following a change in the national law about 18 months ago. “This law states that when the insurance company writes off the vehicle, that vehicle cannot be re-registered in Australia anymore. That means the car is suitable only for dismantling for parts in Australia or for export as a complete vehicle to another country,” says ASV Director Sam Soghomonian. Although the country is vast, Australian cars tend not to rack up big mileages, as people tend to fly longer distances. The average car clocks up around 15,000 miles a year, which accounts for the high quality core. Since the law was introduced, ASV has been harvesting large quantities of engines and car parts from a wide range of European-built cars including BMW, Mercedes, VW and Peugeot.
Joseph Evert and Michael Kitching California-based GB Remanufacturing Inc. specialises in the remanufacture of petrol and diesel fuel injectors, injector components and diesel electronics. However, it is facing a shortage of petrol injector core for certain European cars: “Remanufactured gasolene injectors are not popular in Europe, but they are very popular in the United States. We have applications over there for European vehicles that we have problems getting cores for. So we’re trying to establish some interest from core suppliers in Europe who will collect these cores for us and send them over,” says Joe Evert, Director of Engineering. President and Chief Executive Officer Michael Kitching says that US workshops actively prefer to install reman injectors rather than buy from OE suppliers. “Maybe the relationships between the shops in Europe and the OE is much more protected, I’m not sure. Perhaps people in Europe are not willing to go and purchase a reman unit even though it may be 40% of the OE price.”
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
RIVALS RIGHT ON QUEUE Turbo charger remanufacturers from all over Europe showed their interest in the Vane Flow Test Rig (VTR) on the Turbo Technics stand. The test rig is the first aftermarket rig with actuator capability. Designed, developed and built by the UKbased company, the VTR enables turbo remanufacturers to produce OE quality Variable Geometry Turbochargers (or Variable Nozzle Turbochargers) in volume. The VTR ensures that the vanes inside the turbo can be set according to the original factory setting. Without this technology, a reman turbo that appears to be OK can begin to experience operational difficulties or even jam.
12 l ReMaTecNews
Rival turbo remanufacturers queued to see a demonstration of the machine in action and to learn about its production benefits. Turbo Technics says it is a machine that OE manufacturers will expect its reman suppliers to be able to offer: “Any serious player in turbo remanufacturing, and anyone producing turbo chargers in volume, will need the technology provided by this machine,” says Sales and Marketing Manager Steve Preest. “The OE manufacturers have their own versions of this machine. The big difference is that we have developed one that’s every bit as good and we’re making it available to the independent remanufacturer.”
His age is still the best kept secret of the ReMaTecShow, but the date of his birthday isn’t. John Collins (middle) of Autoenterprises was surprised by Sales Managers Eva Barten and Ewoud Barink with a big birthday cake. Congratulations John!
SEEN FROM THE MARKETPLACE
WILSON EYES UK SITES
“D&V specialises in testing electronic equipment for the OE and remanufacturing industry. We see that in Europe things are a little down although the rest of the world is fine. New products are coming in and new players are arriving so the market is changing a lot. Good companies can respond positively to those changes. Companies that are unable to adapt will struggle.” Michael Kelly, Sales & Marketing manager D&V Electronics, Canada Mike Silva, General Manager, Wilson Auto Electric, (left), Jeff Bell and Knut Saur, Group Sales Manager for Dorian Drake The UK is among the leading contenders as the hub of a sales initiative from Wilson Auto Electric that aims to increase its automotive turnover by $50 million. Owned by BBB Industries, which partners the extensive New York-based Dorian Drake International distribution consortium, Wilson announced its aspirational plans earlier this year (see ReMaTec News issue 3, 2013). Speaking at the ReMaTec Show in Amsterdam, Jeff Bell, Dorian Drake Area Manager
for Europe, indicated that the UK was the ‘probable’ platform for Wilson’s attack on the European market. “The Wilson brand is strong, as the feedback from this show proves. Currently our market is through Iskra, but that will change slightly once a new warehouse is established. We will then decide how to distribute the product across Europe. Our number one priority will be the heavy duty Wilson brand but we will then follow up with a BBB brand for the light truck and passenger car market.”
COMPRESSORTECH AIR OF CONFIDENCE Established to exploit a remanufacturing opportunity, Compressortech has matured into a profitable business and service provider. The introduction of the EU’s End of Life Vehicle directive was a catalyst for the launch of many remanufacturing businesses. Compressortech is one UK remanufacturer at the show this year that is happy to hang its hat on that particular legislative nail: “With vehicle manufacturers committed to producing cars that could be built using 80% or more parts that could be remanufactured, we knew that sooner or later there would be opportunities to talk to OE manufacturers - who would have to come to the table and look for independent remanufacturers like ourselves to remanufacture their programmes for them,” said Managing Director James McClean of the Birmingham-based company. Starting up in 2002 to supply the UK home market with reman compressors, Jim McClean has successfully used the ReMaTec Show in successive years as a vehicle to promote the Compressortech name worldwide. “You can’t rely on your website alone these days. If you’re not seen at a show like this, people are likely to think that you’ve gone
out of business or are no longer interested in trading with them. That’s why we come to the ReMaTec show,” he adds. At its inception, Compressortech saw the market as a slow burning entity and has been a part of its slow maturity. However, it has not been tempted to add different product lines: “We have a single product focus and we are very good at what we do for several high profile OE companies in the UK - and also in mainland Europe.” Compressortech does have another important string to its remanufacturing bow, however. It is a core management specialist, too: “If you don’t have a good core management programme in place, you can lose a lot of money from your business. In the UK, it’s easy to manage your core because it can be seen as a single territory. We work with OE companies who use our own software, incorporate it into their own software so that they can get the core back in. If you don’t get the core back in, you can’t remanufacture.” McClean says that successful remanufacturing is all about reacting positively to the needs of the aftermarket and that it’s a learning process for suppliers and end users alike.
“It’s a good market for us to be in. Business is still growing and Poland is convenient for customers in countries like Norway and Germany, where automatic transmissions are being used more and more. The market is healthy and demand so strong that the normal eight-hour working day is far too short for us.” Konrad Podolski Teo Motors Poland
“This is a growing industry. We’re seeing more and more interest from the VMS as well as the independent aftermarket. TRW has named remanufacturing as one of the key competences in our business plan. We see it as a great opportunity for us as a company, for the environment and for our customers. At the moment, garages and fleet managers are driving the business. I think there will come a time when the end consumer is so aware of the reman market that they will go to the garage and demand a reman product rather than a new part.” Michael von Linden General Manager, Remanufacturing Group, Global Parts & Service TRW

CRYSTAL AUTOPARTS CORE SUPPLIER STEERS TOWARDS LEFT HANDSUCCESS Israel Tabaksblat Rematec 2013 was a good opportunity forAllomatic, a brand of Raybestos Powertrain, to meet new customers. However, the New York-based company, which supplies transmission filters, friction plates and steel plates to the aftermarket, had an additional perspective for exhibiting. “If I can come over here from America and meet ten customers in three days, that’s so much more cost effective for a company like ours than to send someone over to Europe for a week, when they might only get around to meeting two or three,” said Israel Tabaksblat, Vice- President, Marketing and Sales.
Remanufacturers of automotive steering racks and columns for the Left Hand Drive (LHD) Central European market can now source core directly from a new specialist supplier in the UK. Operating from a base at Redditch in the West Midlands, Crystal Autoparts has just added LHD core to its range. “In Central Europe, when it comes to doing business, remanufacturers prefer the more personal touch. As a new supplier of LHD steering core, that’s something we can offer that the larger concerns cannot,” says company director John Lakin. He set up the business 18 months ago in a 50-50 joint partnership agreement with Ross Barnes, Director of Autoparts UK. Autoparts
FURTHER OE REMAN SUPPLY SUCCESS FOR VALEO Valeo has landed a major remanufacturing contract with the top marque passenger car manufacturer Daimler. “We now have a three-year contract to supply the entire remanufacturing program for their air conditioning compressors on all applications,” said Aftermarket Account anager Farid Bouhafs at the company’s stand at the show. “This was a big customer to be missing from our portfolio. But now I’m very pleased to

be able to say that they’re working with us,” he added. In addition to air conditioning compressors, Valeo has well advanced remanufacturing programmes, particularly in relation to clutches, alternators and starter motors, which are remanufactured in Valeo’s own factories. Valeo is a major supplier of original equipment to vehicle manufacturers and is a major aftermarket player, with a growing presence in the reman market.
UK is a well-respected supplier of clutch core and other parts from West Sussex, near the South Coast of England. Lakin says that while the initial focus was on the UK reman supply market, the partnership with Autoparts UK has increased access to high quality core. The company believes the opportunities to win business from some of the established suppliers of LHD core are significant.
PRIVATE EQUITY IN REMAN The role of private equity in the aftermarket and the remanufacturing industry was discussed at an executive lunch during the show. Organised by MERA, the Motor & Equipment Remanufacturers Association, together with Ernst &Young, the event attracted a number of attendants. “The aftermarket and remanufacturing is an attractive industry for PE investors as it is a relatively untapped market and it holds many growth opportunities - especially in remanufacturing as the industry and consumers focus more on sustainability,” Ernst &Young’s Global Automotive Leader Michael Hanley told the audience. “All the ingredients for a robust market are present. There is no shortage of financing, and there is a growing appetite for companies to buy and sell.” “The EY Global Automotive Center is a trusted resource for industry intelligence for MERA members,” said John Chalifoux, president and COO, MERA. “Our invited members and guests found the discussion at ReMaTec2013 to be particularly helpful as they seek new opportunities in a growing and global remanufacturing marketplace.”
SEEN FROM THE MARKETPLACE
SEMINAR POINTS TO MISSED OPPORTUNITIES Remanufacturers were told improvements in profitability could be achieved through better pricing in a seminar that discussed sales efficiency and price policies. Deidra Vos, managing partner with Amsterdam-based management consultancy Profit Pricing, said that remanufacturers often fail to address three separate price issues. “A lot of companies fail to establish a clear position about pricing and quality, and about who they want to compete with. This is vital before you start to set prices and discount levels”, she said. She went on to say that value based pricing
Deirdra Vos, Profit Pricing
can benefit many but is practised by few: “Most companies follow a cost plus policy. They are comfortable with a certain margin and base their prices on what their competitors offer. What they miss is an understanding of the value perceived by the customer. It could be they are ready to pay a higher price for the quality on offer.” She quoted the example of Apple, which was poised to ask around £350 for its latest iPad model - until research showed that consumers would be more than happy to pay £600 because of the high value they associated with the product. She closed with the view that it is important to make price differentials even between products that are very similar. This in order to generate interest by customers who might be prepared to pay higher prices for a differential because of doubts about paying the lowest price. If the parts are all priced similarly, opportunities can be lost, she argued.
REBOOKING SHOWS CONFIDENCE IN REMATEC 2015 Over 25% of ReMaTec2013 floor space is already booked for the next edition. Malte Raddatz of Meritor Inc. was the first exhibitor who secured its space for ReMaTec2015. To enable the show to continue its growth, Amsterdam RAI plans to open a second hall at the RAI Convention Centre for the 2015 ReMatec show,” Niels Klarenbeek, Show Manager said. “As Hall 11 was sold out this year, we intend to stage the show in Hall 10 and Hall 11
next time, adding another 3500 sqm gross surface to the show floor. Hall 10 will have a restaurant and offers direct access to the RAI Conference Centre. A number of well known names have already signed up for stands,These include: Pos Service Holland, D&V Electronics, Exedy, GFX, Gobbi, SuperFlow, Diesel Parts of America, Premier Components, Turbo-Tec, O.R.P.A.V. / Emmetec, Kardes, Church & Dwight , Armex, Mecatrans, Level 7 Group.

“People used to think that the Chinese had the solution to everything. They thought they could go there, buy new at a cheap price and that was all they had to do. They thought they didn’t need core anymore. Now they realise that the quality isn’t so good. They’re coming back and they appreciate the quality of the core that we can deliver. Opportunities are there for us. Starter motors are our main line, but the turbo charger range is now our second most popular range and it’s a rapidly growing market for us. We’re currently exporting between 40-45,000 units per month to remanufacturers throughout Europe.” Achille Agosti Gobbi Spare Parts, Italy
“The vehicle manufacturing industry has changed dramatically over the past 42 years, especially with regard to automatic transmissions. For example, back then, only around 3-5% of vehicles in Russia and the European countries had them. In Germany this year, 33% of vehicles made will be automatic. This kind of growth is fuelling the prosperity of companies like ours, which supply new parts, as well as fuelling the prosperity of the companies that supply remanufactured parts.” Mike Halston Product Development Manager GFXCorp, United States
“I believe the industry is at a point where it’s gaining critical mass from where it will start to grow very, very quickly. It’s important that the major associations co-operate to produce one definition about what remanufacturing is. A common definition gives us a unified approach, one that makes the industry look more organised and more professional. It will take some time to get there, but once the average person appreciates the realities of the carbon footprint, the ecological impact and the savings they can make by making the responsible choice, I believe they will make it.” Nick Staub Romaine Electrics, Chairman, APRA, USA

Two major reman events in Shanghai in early December In yet another sign of China’s rising attention to remanufacturing in general and automotive and HD remanufactoring in particular two major significant events will run concurrently in Shanghai from December 2nd to December 4th. These are the 2nd World Remanufacturing Summit and the Remanufacturing China Expo 2013. The World Remanufacturing is a partnership between the world’s three leading reman research institutions, Bayreuth University’s Chair of Manufacturing and Remanufacturing in Germany, Rochester Institute of Technology in the US and China’s NKLR, National Key Laboratory for Remanufacturing. ReMaTecNews, the reman industry’s leading magazine, will be the official Media Partner. Like the first Global Remanufacturing Summit in Bayreuth in Germany in September 2012, the follow-up event in Shanghai aims at bringing scientists/researchers in the field of remanufacturing together with industry executives from across the world. ”The first summit in Europe showed
the great need for interchange between the academic world and the enterprises whose future succes will depend on technological advances,” says Professor Sheng Zhu, Director of NKLR in Beijing. ”This is also the case here in China, where the government, increasingly, supports remanufacturing.” During the conference participants will be informed about the latest polcies on remanufacturing from the Chinese National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), one of China’s supreme economics bodies. This will provide a further insight into the future direction of remanufacturing in China. 29 new reman pilot projects One significant indication of the Chinese governments current thinking is the approval earlier this year of a further 29 reman pilot projects in addition to the 49 projects already authorised since 2008. Around the same time the government in conjunction with a number of technological bodies issued a set of new Quality and
Technical Standards for Remanufactured Units aimed at guaranteeing the quality of remanufactured units. Hosted by a number of Chinese reman organisations in conjunction with NKLR and events organizer, Shanghai-based Duxes, Remanufacturing China Expo 2013 is expected to attract 100 exhibitors and in excess of 2000 buyers from Asia-Pacific, North America, Europe and the Middle East. Both events will take place at the Galaxy Hotel, 888 Zhongshan West Road, Shanghai, China. For further information, please contact Dr. Guo Weiling, NKLR E-mail: remanufactureforum@vip.163.com

ZOR – a new arrival in the European market Competition in the reman turbo charger supply market is about to increase in Europe as a result of the emergence of a new brand from the USA. The ZOR brand is scheduled to make its European debut later this year with a unique selling point linked to US currency prices: “Our products are remanufactured to the highest quality standards and as good as any reman turbo charger products available in Europe. Because we will be selling in US dollars, our price will be very competitive and we anticipate strong demand,” says partner in the business, Zicki Zuck. From its base in Winchester, Virginia, ZOR remanufactures turbo chargers for passenger cars, heavy duty, agricultural and industrial applications. The brand is currently sold to the trade or end-user market either from stock, remanufactured from customer’s own units or available in assemble-yourself

kit form to the do-it-yourself market. Partnership Zuck, who is the source of the ‘Z’ in ZOR, is also chief executive officer of DS USA, a supplier of starter and alternators to the USA repair market since 2008. ZOR was set up last year in partnership with two other significant investors one of whom is Oren Neugebohr who provides the ‘O” part of the ZOR brand name. He runs the Michigan-based remanufacturing enterprise Auto Electric International, which is a remanufacturer of starters and alternators. The other is Randall Funk, who provides the ‘R”, is the third investor. Randall Funk was formerly with Remy Automotive, where he specialised in quality control.

TRW Remanufacturing. As new Remanufacturing old parts to become exchange parts that are ‘as new’ not only saves precious resources, but especially for older vehicles it may be the only repair method that makes sense financially. Perfect function and safety at lower prices – it is a repair solution to suit the times, especially as vehicles are spending even longer on the road. Almost all electrical, electronic and mechanical components are remanufactured to ‘as new’ condition in the ‘TRW Original Exchange Parts Program‘. Here we benefit from our experience as an original equipment supplier and our close cooperation with the vehicle manufacturers. In terms of quality, service life and appearance, the finished products are as good as new parts. At two locations in Europe, TRW is ensuring that used parts are turned into exchange parts for vehicle manufacturers, Independent Aftermarket and Industry garages.

Remanufacturing – the gold standard The long-term future is assured for the remanufacturing industry, says Nick Morley, Director at CRR, the UK’s Center for Remanufacturing and Reuse. Remanufacturing is a substantial, albeit largely hidden industry, currently worth around £5 billion of sales in the UK. It has always been a part of developed countries’ economies and has generally shown good economic resilience, similar to servicing and repair. For example, a study by the US International Trade Commission published this year estimated that the value of US remanufactured production grew 15 per cent between 2009 and 2011 to at least $43 billion (£28 billion), supporting 180,000 full time US jobs. Historically, it has been strong in sectors that deal with mechanical or electromechanical machinery. Traditional examples include aerospace, automotive, machine tools, vending machines, automated teller machines (ATMs) and refrigerated display cabinets. It has also recently extended to consumer electronics and ICT, office furniture and even clothing. It has sat alongside repair and refurbishment as a possible option for such products if sufficient demand exists for a more pricesensitive market segment. An early example was Xerox with large photocopiers, Océ (part of Canon) with printshop printers, Caterpillar with earth-moving equipment and ZF Automotive with automotive components. These are a few examples of leading and high-profile exponents of remanufacturing. Digging deeper Remanufacturing differs from repair and refurbishment in that it requires a full treatment process – like new manufacture – to guarantee performance of the finished object. It involves more effort, time and cost. But with this comes the quality guarantee. Remanufacturing is therefore the gold standard for the reuse of products, since it guarantees the same or possibly even better performance compared with new. From a supplier’s perspective, remanufacturing and associated business models offer a way to develop long-term customer relationships and smooth otherwise lumpy revenue from the sale of new capital goods. From a customer’s perspective, remanufactured goods offer cost savings of typically 20-60 per cent, or are incorporated to make performance-based contracts more costeffective.
It makes more efficient use of material resources, reduces raw material supply risks and manufacturing energy cost concerns. Factors against it are any fast reduction in cost and evolution of products (such as DVD players); or fashionable goods or where status is conferred by newness (such as cars). Sustainability benefits Historically driven by economics, remanufacturing is being given a higher profile by its savings in materials and energy; increased raw material security; policy measures that encourage product reuse over materials recycling; and, in particular, by its key role in the circular economy. As such it is promoted both by countries – such as China, which has a circular economy law – and also by businesses that are creating closed-loop business models, supported by commercial and environmental analysis. Cost reduction from remanufacturing varies according to product group, sometimes according to the historical reputation of remanufactured products. For suppliers, the smallest discount to new products
Nick Morley
enhances margins, hence one of the golden rules of remanufacturing is that ‘it is at its most successful when most hidden’. Remanufactured products often appear as warranty replacements. Remanufacturing types In general, there are three classes of remanufacturer: • the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) • the contracted ‘official’ agent and • the independent operator. In the first two cases, OEMs retain at least some control over both the rewards and the quality of the remanufactured product. Relationships between contractors and OEMs can involve mutually beneficial information flows regarding both original design specifications and product failure modes and frequencies. These can be used to enhance product design, design for remanufacture and even upgrade paths for old generation products. Independent operators usually provide a service in product groups where the OEM is not deeply involved in direct customer support (such as out-of-warranty automotive), or where it concentrates on new sales. OEMs may re-enter remanufacture where they recognise their strong brand name is being parasitised, and where technological advances offer strong upgrade potential. Standards One of the main barriers to increased use of remanufactured products is the perception they are second-rate with a higher risk of failure or shorter lifetime. This creates a role for independent standards, which has in the UK led to the development of the British Standard 8887 series . The series is set within the context of ‘design for life cycle’ – in other words that the decision on the strategy for the product at the end of its first life should depend on the optimum environmental impact over the whole life cycle (manufacture-use-disposal). This is because for some products, notably those with high energy consumption in use and where energy efficiency of new models is rapidly advancing (such as domestic refrigerators), accelerated replacement followed by

amending. However, the increasing recognition of the financial and environmental advantages of remanufacturing mean that
The future of remanufacturing BS8887-220 is a pioneering standard for remanufactured products and is likely to form one of the main sources for the ISO (international) standard on remanufacturing that has recently been proposed by the Chinese Standardisation Administration, which is likely to be created in the next two to three years. Greater use of standards like these will enable increased confidence in specifying and purchasing remanufactured products. Several other barriers remain for the more widespread use of remanufacturing, notably the establishment of better return channels for products. Experienced businesses such as Caterpillar use financial incentives through their dealer networks to achieve this. Legislation – some of it ironically being environmentally orientated – that discriminates against remanufactured products requires

Remanufacturing gains ground in Italy Autopromotec in Bologna hosts first reman forum
Despite Europe’s economic crisis, Autopromotec 2013 Bologna has established itself as Europe’s second largest automotive service exhibition. Now this growing aftermarket event is embracing remanufacturing too. This was much in evidence during this year’s show, from May 22 to May 26 in Bologna’s 375,000 m2 Fiera. By organising a remanufacturing forum as part of its educational programme for garages and trading companies, the exhibition revealed a new desire to promote remanufacturing. The main speakers at the forum were Marketing Director Rosella Risso, Iveco P&S Emea, Stefano Carloni, President of AIRP Italy’s Association of Tyre Retreaders (Associazione Italiana Ricostruttori Pneumatici), and Fernand Weiland, Past Chairman APRA Europe. A subsequent discussion was moderated by Maurizio Caprino of the newspaper Il Sole 24Ore. Speaking on behalf of Iveco, recently renamed “Fiat Industrial”, which includes Case, New Holland and Fiat Powertrain, Rosella Risso, expressed her confidence in remanufacturing, emphasising the opportunities for lowering cost of ownership and strengthening the operator’s competitiveness. “We believe that remanufacturing must
26 l ReMaTecNews
be part of our range and we’re currently offering remanufactured engines and gearboxes. The plan is to extend our range of reman products further”, she said. Tyre retrading generates energy savings Stefano Carloni of AIRP spoke about retreading/remanufacturing tyres, which in Italy totals 1.5 million tyres each year with the total for Europe estimated at more than 8 million tyres per annum. Interestingly, Stefano Carloni pointed out that the energy savings from retreading old tyres instead of manufacturing new ones saves the equivalent of 114,000 tons of fuel every year in Italy. Compared to the biggest automotive reman product line, electrical remanufacturing , tyre retreading generates significantly higher energy savings. In his presentation, Fernand Weiland gave an overview of the state of the European reman industry and its development in recent years, including a range of key figures. “So far, these do not include tyres. Perhaps we should look closer at this segment in future,” Weiland said. In the subsequent discussion, moderator Maurizio Caprino raised the question ”To what extent are remanufactured products now accepted by the trade and by consumers?”
The response from the panel can be summed up: - Today, consumer and garage perceptions are, by and large, positive - Due to the logistics of core returns, som distributors still prefer to sell new - It is generally understood that reman quality must be the same as for new - The green aspects of reman offers are genuine selling points As one participant, the Italian journalist, Nicola Giardino, noted: “The automotive aftermarket in Italy is complex as well as strong. Nevertheless, there are lots of opportunities for remanufactured products.’’
In support of remanufacturing in Italy, Autopromotec has sponsored an Italian language brochure, written by Fernand Weiland, which explains what remanufacturing is, opportunities for entering the market and the structure of the European reman Industry. Eaton launches new transmission series Eaton recently launched the Fuller Advantage Series of heavy-duty transmissions, which include new design features such as reduced weight and increased efficiency resulting in fuel economy improvements and other features contributing to lower preventative maintenance costs, the company says. This new line of 10-speed transmissions is scheduled for commercial production later this year. “The Fuller Advantage Series transmissions will be available in both manual and automated designs, with the automated versions scheduled for production in the first quarter of 2014,” the company said. A new precision lube system represents one of the most important upgrades in the new transmissions, according to Eaton. The system reduces the oil churn energy losses found in traditional transmissions by nearly 33 percent. With less heat being generated, the Fuller Advantage Series transmissions do not require a cooler and corresponding lines and fittings. This results in less preventative maintenance required while engine fans cycle less, further reducing horsepower demand.

NEWS Remanufacturing – some international aspects Five years ago, the number of remanufacturers operating internationally were limited. In fact, they could be counted on one hand and tended to be restricted to OE partssuppliers with remanufacturing operations and some core suppliers. Today the situation is markedly different. You could even say that a reman revolution has occurred across the world as enterprises are growing their global foot prints - even when reverse logistic and limited availability of cores are favouring regional remanufacturing setups (local for local). As a result, when companies wish to enter new regions, many feel it necessary to set up new remanufacturing facilities. These are long term investments which should not fail. If remanufacturers want to secure global success, their usiness strategy must take account of the fact that “the driver for remanufacturing”, differs slightly between the regions. Therefore, they must adopt their price positioning, their unique sales proposition “USP” in communications and their networking in accordance with regional requirements. In recent years European remanufacturing has developed somewhat in line with the development of political processes – i.e at a
time where society devotes huge efforts to reduce the global warming and CO2 emissions. This means that, increasingly, remanufactured products are accepted to be “better then new”. The end customer receives a product of equivalent quality as “new” with the same functionality as the equivalent new OE unit and made from an ecologically superior production process - at a reasonable price. The availability of raw material for further growth is a key topic of discussion in Asia Pacific , mainly China, today. In these discussions the new term “urban mining” is appearing with ever greater frequency as a generic description of the activities aimed at regenerating raw materials from the existing urban infrastructure. The Chinese government now seems to grant remanufacturing licenses only for products with the appropriate, raw material content. Diversity Accordingly, it’s clear that remanufacturers with worldwide ambitions must include the diversity of cultures when launching operations outside their domestic markets. There is a strong demand for an association that represents the entire remanufactur-

ing industry without restrictions regarding regions or segments and categories. That association, too, should play a key role in building a global network for business partnerships and enhance international expertise for remanufacturing. As the only association that supports remanufacturer of automotive parts worldwide, APRA has the capability to bridging the different regions of the globe. Supporting members to get their foot on the ground in remanufacturing markets on different continents through international events and networking, is one of APRA’s strengths. Having offices in all relevant time zones, with staff dedicated to support remanufacturers, is yet another. APRA is a gateway to global remanufacturing. Make use of it.
CorepaCabana Named “CorepaCabana”, APRA’s Brazilian dinner for the professional core community, during ReMaTec2013 was a great success. Attracting close to 100 participants the event took place at the “StrandZuid” beach area just off the Amsterdam RAI convention centre and featured a performance of Brazilian food and attractive Latin American dancers. The aim of the evening was to facilitate networking between the core-dealing community from different countries, regions and continents. That aim was well achieved.

APRA’s global reach To meet the requirements in terms of availability, culture and behavior of its members across the world, APRA is now covering three regions each with their own regional office. The US office, which also serves as APRA’s global HQ, is based in Washington with responsibility for Canada, Alaska, Mexico and the United States. The Germany-based
European-/EMEA-Office is responsible for Europe, Middle East as well as NAFTA, South America and Africa. The recently launched Asia-/Pacific-Office is the point of contact for current and future members in China, Japan, India, Russia, Korea, Australia etc. At the same time APRA operates a number of product divisions. These divisions offer possibilities for clarifying and solving
product specific questions through technical workshops/clinics or other networking events. APRA offers many different regional or global divisions such as electrical- , mechatronic-, automatic transmission-, heavy duty- questions and more.

Mission fulfilled? In its 55 years as a stakeholder in automotive remanufacturing, FIRM and its representatives have put in considerable efforts into providing its member associations with the right platforms and databases. This, in turn, has enabled the national associations to translate and distribute information and user manuals and promote the benefits to their workshop members across Europe. Examples? Technical Data Sheets and booklets with all necessary engine reman specifications and several attempts to establish a digital database for reman specifications. In addition, there has been parts catalogues, member databases with key information for each member workshop and much besides - all examples of tools that enable workshops to meet their customers’ requirements. From the earliest days of FIRM the message has been one of offering the broadest support to all member associations. This still is a prime aim – and I believe that the mission has been accomplished. In this respect, therefore, one of Firm’s three main objectives, individual help to members members, has been met. What, then, about the other two of FIRM’s key responsibilities: - 1) Internal and external communication and lobbying and 2) networking within the field of engine remanufacturing? Internal communication On the face of it, internal communication, would seem easy since we only have 11 national associations as members. However, each association is, in general, run by owners or general managers of small and medium sized operations such as engine reman workshops. They lead busy lives and cannot be expected to devote a large amount of time to activities that do no impact directly on their businesses. Inevitably, this can result in information, invitations or announcements from FIRM’s office in Brussels failing to reach all recipients and workshops. For the same reason, information from the national markets to the FIRM’s office (including industry news, technical innovations, OES-activities, key market figures etc)
32 l ReMaTecNews
may not be available for newsletters or in the internal area at FIRM’s web-site. FIRM has to overcome this bottleneck in order to make the board’s work transparent, promote the benefits from all the above mentioned platforms and databases obtain better and faster market information and key figures. We have to create a better and more effective internal communication system between the Brussels office and the national workshops. Language, another often mentioned obstacle to communication is less of a problem with todays digital translation programs. These are not perfect, but at least they provide a basic understanding of the content or message of a text. The actual communication as experienced from the last few years must be more effective. Equally, with regard to the situation at FIRM’s secretariat in Brussels, FIRM has to make some decisions. Proposals for a new communication strategy and maybe some organizational changes will be presented at this years general assembly at EquipAuto. Last but not least: lobbying and networking. In the last 18 months, FIRM has taken several big steps forward! The new cooperation with APRA, followed by the reciprocal memberships for both associations as well as APRA’s links to other European aftermarket organizations such as CLEPA, MERA etc. have resulted in a common reman industry definition in Europe. In addition, the acceptance of that definition by the OES has been achieved. A real success for for networking! Mission fulfilled! The next task Now it is up to FIRM – together with APRA and other stakeholders in the reman industry - to promote that definition in order to overcome, for instance, worldwide existing nontariff-barriers. In addition we must support the negotiations about free trade agreements with other countries at European level. Both activities will help our industry and, therefore, every member workshop under FIRM to be regarded as a part of the automotive reman industry – the key environmental protection
industry! For our national associations the next task is to communicate our successes to your national members and thus taking advantage of the work, FIRM is doing, for lobbying and promotion in your respective countries. For the benefit or your national engine reman workshops. Fulfill your mission!
Independent workshop At FIRM’s booth at ReMaRec2013 many visitors showed their interest in the association’s challenges and wanted to know more about joining our association. Engine remanufacturers from different countries asked for specific information while suppliers enquired about the benefits from working closer with our members. We also had several wcontacts with Chinese delegations seeking expertise in engine remanufacturing. Media representatives also asked for interviews regarding the environmental and economic advantages from remanufacturing. From FIRM’s point of view ReMaTec2013 was very successful indeed.
President Philippe Maerten gave a presentation on FIRM at ReMaTec2013
