Reman – a truly global industry

ReMaTecNews, the only international news magazine and website dedicated to automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing worldwide, is an independent channel for news, views and developments within the remanufacturing industry. Published by: Amsterdam RAI B.V. P.O. Box 77777 1070 MS Amsterdam The Netherlands In association with

Towards the end of 2012 the American government’s International Trade Commission, USITC, published its long-awaited report entitled ‘Remanufactured Goods: An Overview of the U.S. and Global Industries, Markets and Trade.’ It can be downloaded from www.usitc.gov/publications/332/pub4356.pdf – and it’s more than worth the effort. Besides a general overview of remanufacturing in the US, the report provides a range of data relevant to remanufacturers everywhere. Ot least Europe. Between them, they give a good indication of trends and developments within the various fields of remanufacturing globally – of which automotive and commercial vehicle reman, is, of course, a very important part. With the US market for remanufactured products growing by 17 per cent (from 3.3 billion euros to 3.9 billion euros) between 2009 and 2011, heavy duty and automotive reman accounted for a considerable percentage of the increase. That trend is undoubtedly mirrored elsewhere. Thus the report sends out two important signals to the wider world. Governments – in this case the US administration – are increasingly recognising remanufacturing as an important driver in the battle against CO2 emissions and the decline in the world’s stock of raw materials. At the same time, it points towards the many new opportunities for remanufacturers arising from governments’ endeavours to accelerate the greening of the planet. Both testify to the ‘New Normal’ – which is that remanufacturing is now taking its rightful place among the key segments of the global motor industry. And not only that, reman is coming to many other areas of industrial activity worldwide. The trends are there for everyone to see. Now it’s up to remanufacturers to seize their moment.

From academia to China From Bayreuth in Bavaria, Germany, to Guangzhou in Southern China is quite some distance – and quite a cultural gap. Not always easy to bridge. Nevertheless, that is precisely what 31 year-old, Dr.-Ing. Daniel C. F. Köhler, a former management consultant and scientist at the University of Bayreuth, is currently undertaking. Having vacated the Chair of Manufacturing and Remanufacturing in Bayreuth in the summer of 2012, Daniel Köhler now heads up the Strategy and Development Department at the Mingjie Group in Guangzhou, one of China’s fastest growing companies within the field of environmental protection technologies, logistics and remanufacturing. In view of the company’s extensive reman investment programme, all indications are that Mingjie is set to emerge as a new force in Chinese (and international) automotive remanufacturing. The tie-up between the German academic and the Chinese company happened as a result of a project undertaken by University of Bayreuth on behalf of Mingjie when the Chi-

nese started to roll out their plans for diverting into remanufacturing. On the backdrop of its involvement in recycling, utilization of renewable resources such as domestic electrical and electronic appliances, plastics, copper and aluminium alloy products, Mingjie sees new opportunities in automotive remanufacturing, and recently decided to enter the market. One of the initial steps involved a contract with Professor Rolf Steinhilper’s Chair of Manufacturing and Remanufacturing in Bayreuth, another the initiation of a largescale building programme for advanced remanufacturing in Foshan near Guangzhou – and a third was hiring of Dr. Köhler as part of Mingjie’s management team in charge of developing Mingjie’s Remanufacturing Business Unit. The business unit focuses on large-scale, high quality remanufacturing with focus on remanufactured turbochargers, engines and starters and alternators,” Daniel Köhler explained to ReMaTecNews.”Later in the year we expect to inaugurate what will be one of

the one of the most advanced reman facilities in China.”

Opportunity As for his own involvement, Dr. Köhler mentions factors such as the impressive development of the Chinese economy, the Chinese government’s promotion of remanufacturing and the Mingjie Group’s culture. “I’m really pleased with the opportunity to be part of creating something new and huge - from the earliest plans to the running of the business,” he says. During his time at the University of Bayreuth, Dr. Köhler was involved in more than two dozen industrial and scientific projects, ranging from small sized companies to global players and OEMs. In addition to his 2011 doctoral thesis, Regenerative Supply Chains, Daniel Köhler has published several articles about remanufacturing, Life Cycle Assessment, Logistics and Supply Chain Management. He has also delivered presentations at national and international conferences.

Changes at CLEPA Wolfgang Mayer steps in An experienced automotive executive has been named the successor to Josef Frank, Senior Advisor, at CLEPA’s headquarters in Brussels. With effect from March 1 Wolfgang Mayer, a Bosch executive since 1996, will take over at the influential aftermarket association. His areas of responsibility will include CLEPA’s reman-related activities. Having worked in a number of different countries in Europe, Africa and North and South America – and in different management positions within Bosch’s Automotive Aftermarket Division Wolfgang Mayer brings wide experience to his new posi-

tion. Since 2008, he has held the post of Regional Director for Spain and Portugal for the German aftermarket giant. Long before this, in the 1970s, he worked in Brussels when Bosch established its first regional organisation in Europe. “As you know, reman is an important activity within Bosch and we clearly see the advantage of the reman business for the environment and for the economy in terms of the considerable savings in raw materials,” Wolfgang Mayer told ReMaTecNews. “Nor should we forget that the reman industry provides a very large number of jobs in Europe. I fully support the endeavours of the industry to establish reman as a recognised product category and within my new position in CLEPA I shall continue to pursue this task together with my colleagues from the other associations.”

Josef Frank leaves After close to 50 years in the motor industry, Josef Frank, Senior Consultant with CLEPA in

Brussels for the past six years, is retiring. He will, however, maintain some of his links to the industry as an independent consultant. During his time in Brussels, Josef Frank has played a central role in placing reman at the heart of CLEPA’s activities. Throughout his tenure, Josef Frank exercised considerable influence through lobbying on behalf of the independent aftermarket and supporting consumer choice within the EU framework. “To get results for our members one needs knowledge, reciprocity, fairness and respect for other stakeholders. We had interesting issues during these years when the focus was on maintaining competition for the sake of consumers and suppliers and to underline the importance of suppliers in the whole chain,” he once said. A sentiment which Josef Frank has more than lived up to himself.

ZF Bielefeld – 50 years o By William Schwarck Each year the giant German automotive and CV supplier, ZF Friedrichshafen, remanufactures more than 2 million clutch cover assemblies and clutch discs at plants in Germany, Slovakia, Brazil and South Africa. At the heart of ZF’s clutch reman operations lies its plant in Bielefeld, Germany. ReMaTecNews visited the place, where it all started – 50 years ago this year. A few miles outside the centre of Bielefeld, an 800-year-old city in North Rhine-Westphalia in western Germany, lies a quiet residential area. Nothing unusual in that. Tens of thousands of similar districts are dotted across German cities and towns. Green, grassy and almost rural. Except that, bang in the middle, is a factory – and a pretty busy one at that. However the neighbours adjacent to the plant never complain. In fact, a significant number work there, which means they can walk to work. Not an insignificant benefit at a point in time when millions spend hours a day commuting to and from their workplace. “Like many here, I’m one of those who can walk to the office,â€? smiles Core Manager AndrĂŠ Temme. “In fact, our location is the reason why we have so many loyal employees here. If we were to relocate somewhere else, perhaps 50 per cent might leave us. And we cannot afford that because we need highly skilled people. Moreover, we see our good relations with our neighbours as evidence that we run a very environmentally-friendly operation. Which we strive to do.â€? The plant in question is ZF Bielefeld,

Core Manager AndrĂŠ Temme, Plant Manager JĂśrg WitthĂśft and Logistics Manager JĂźrgen Palupski: Commitment to high-quality clutch remanufacturing.

Germany’s oldest clutch remanufacturing operation and ZF Friedrichshafen’s first reman business. Established in 1963, the plant has been in continuous operation ever since under the Sachs brand, rising from humble, almost coincidental, beginnings to what it is today, Europe’s largest clutch remanufacturer. Part of this year, therefore, will rightly be dedicated to celebrating its first half century.

Bikes and motorcycles “Our roots go back even further,â€? explained Plant Manager JĂźrgen Palupski. “Originally,

the factory here made bicycles and light motorcycles. Then a small-scale clutch manufacturing business started up. And that, in turn, led to the remanufacturing of clutches. We’ve now been doing that for five decades. Obviously, much has changed over the years. In the early part of the new millennium torque converters for commercial vehicles were added to the programme and in recent years, the plant has seen extensive upgrading. In November a refurbished hall was opened and a number of other improvements carried out at a total cost of more than one million euros. The plant may be 50 years old but its operations are entirely up-to-date – which is in keeping with the ZF’s groups overall approach to environmental protection measures and remanufacturing. One example of this was the group’s “Year of Energy initiative last year under which all units worldwide were set targets for energy improvements, which resulted in a significant reduction in ZF’s overall energy consumption. “Since one of the great benefits of remanufacturing lies in energy savings, it’s

makes sense to add this additional product to the range.”

Global markets The products from the plant in Windelsbleicher Strasse reach customers across the globe, although primarily OEMs and almost exclusively applications for European vehicles. US built vehicles are not a focus area because

clutches from the US vary greatly from European ones. Russia, however, is on the radar – although everyone recognises the practical difficulties in a difficult market – and some consignments also go to China and Japan.

André Temme adds: “You can grow the business either by speeding up processes and working faster, which would not be fair on our people. So we have to improve the production system. The challenge, of course, is to do this while maintaining high standards. High standards clearly are a high priority at ZF Bielefeld. This, in fact, is a recurring topic during ReMaTecNews’ extensive talk with the management group at Bielefeld: André Temme, Jürgen Palupski, Bernd Luithle and Jörg Witthoft. As Witthoft says: “One problem for us is that we have many small competitors around the world, who remanufacture clutches and leave our name on the clutch. When they do a poor job, it damages

As for the future? On the backdrop of the recent upgrading programme at the plant, confidence is running high. ”We will continue to optimise material and production flow in order to make procedures more effi-

our business. We set very high standards for ourselves and our products and we put a lot of effort into preserving the reputation of ZF as a remanufacturer which our customers can rely on 100 per cent.”

‘We see our good relations with our neighbours as evidence that we run a very environmentally friendly operation’ The size and ambition of the operations in Bielefeld, a central part of the ZF group’s reman activities can be illustrated by some simple figures. Employing a workforce of some 250 people, each year the plant dispatches more than 220,000 remanufactured parts, 12,000 torque converters for commercial vehicles, the latter having been added in the early part of the last decade. As Andre Temme explains: “We added torque converters because our people already possessed the skills required. When you install a dual mass flywheel you have to open up the whole power train anyway so it

cient. One problem for remanufacturers is that material costs are on the rise, while prices remain stable. One way of dealing with this is to become more efficient,” says Jurgen Palupski.

Keeping 100 year old cars alive for posterity In a small office at ZF Friedrichshafen’s plant for remanufactured clutches in Bielefeld in Germany sits Frank Lass looking at a veteran car on his computer screen. A 45 year old

mechanic with 22 years of clutch reman experience at ZF, Lass, however, is not the average reman operative. He is, in fact, one of Europe’s – perhaps one of the world’s - leading specialists in restoring clutches for up to one hundred year old cars. As such, Frank Lass is part of the heritage of the motor industry – as well as an example of how some large companies are willing to devote time and effort to make even a handful of customers satisfied. As the old-timer clutch remanufacturer in residence for the past 11 years, Frank Lass has been responsible for extending the lifetimes of a significant number of old cars that would otherwise not still have been running - foremost amongst them a German Protos. only three remains in the world – and one them runs on a reman clutch provided by Lass who spend three weeks returning the clutch to life.

Research “Remanufacturing a clutch after such a long time is not easy,” Lass says. “There are often no drawings, you have to do a great deal of research, finding the most suitable materials and make sure that the clutch will last for another 50.000 kilometers.” “At the same time, we learn something new from every clutch that comes in. This we can use to help others because it will help us do better next time. In the end it’s all worth it when you see that you have a very happy customer.” “Although the numbers are very small, we see this as good for the company,” adds Core Manager André Temme. “It shows our customers that we care and we learn from all the work that goes into it. It’s really a win-win situation.”

To continue in 2013: the ReMaTec Theatre formula Launched during ReMaTec2011, the ReMaTec Theatre was prominently located on the exhibition floor where the half-open seminar area offered easy access to lectures as well as to the latest information on trends and developments in the reman industry. Again this year, exhibitors can book time slots of 30 minutes and thus maximise the benefits from the programme. With 14 well attended seminars, product presentations and technical sessions over three days the concept proved highly successful in 2011. “For organisers of international trade fairs the educational element of our events is increasingly important,” explained Niels Klarenbeek, Domain Manager, Remanufacturing at Amsterdam Rai. “The ReMaTec Theatre is our answer to that. Moreover, the theatre offers automotive professionals outstanding opportunities to become more familiar with remanufacturing.” The seminar programme will be announced in edition 3 of ReMaTecNews. Exhibitors interested in booking time slots can contact Niels Klarenbeek n.klarenbeek@rai.nl

Organisational changes for ReMaTecNews With effect from January 1st 2013, the management of ReMaTecNews magazine has been transferred to Amsterdam RAI from its previous owner, the magazine publisher, RAI Langfords. Hence, ReMaTecNews is now part

of the remanufacturing domain of RAI Exhibitions. “With the integration of the magazine into RAI Exhibitions we are now a truly multimedia domain that provides the reman industry with news, market information, sales leads and networking opportunities via our own media, said Domain Manager Niels Klarenbeek. “Our trade fair ReMaTec, the ReMatecNews magazine the portal ReMaTecNews.com are all market leaders within their field enabling us to optimize the cross media propositions to our customers. ReMaTecNews learns how a UK remanufacturer of brake calipers is using an improved warranty scheme to strengthen its brand and enhance the profile of the reman industry.

A UK remanufacturer of replacement parts for trucks and buses has introduced what’s believed to be the country’s first two-year warranty for remanufactured brake callipers. Remanufactured Systems (RSL), which is Fcallibased at Swadlincote, Derbyshire in the East Midlands, plans to make the two-year warranty exclusively available through a network of distributors that’s committed to promoting the brand as their first line of choice. Other distributors will still be able to supply the brake calipers, but their customers’ brake calipers will continue to be covered by the one-year warranty. “OE suppliers have always talked remanufacturers down. Well, we are talking them up. We are selling more than ever and we are saying that we can do the job better than you because our warranty is twice as good as yours, says managing director Andrew Bennett. He hopes to begin the two-year warranty programme with a sales network of around 120 UK outlets and is already planning for future growth. “Current sales are already 25 per cent up on the figures for this time last year and we are now producing 1100 calipers per month, around 200 more than just three or four months ago. We have exhausted our expansion capacity here, so we will be looking to move to new premises later in the year. It’s an upward sales trend that began in 2008 during the depths of a UK recession that followed the world banking crisis.

18 l ReMaTecNews

The RSL two-year warranty scheme on brake calipers will be launched in the UK at the beginning of March 2013.

“OE suppliers had scaled back their brake caliper production. Suddenly, there were no calipers in the aftermarket, he says.

realised they were getting products that were just as good if not better than OE products that were previously costing them twice the price.

Alternative The aftermarket customers needed an alternative and RSL stepped up: “Suddenly we were able to sell reman brake calipers to distributors that we had been unable to sell them to before. They were being forced into switching from OE-based product to reman due to very high customer demand from fleets and independent workshops. RSL business has since trebled in size and its distributor base has grown. Perhaps that’s hardly surprising: “Their workshop customers soon

New investment A new investment of over ÂŁ200,000 in core and stock profile development helped RSL to keep pace with demand, while investment in training ensured it stayed in touch with developments in electronics that are now a standard fit on all the OE brake calipers produced: “When we first started remanufacturing, there was nothing like that. They were all either air over hydraulic or air run brake calipers with wear sensors in the brake pads. Now there is even a range with potentiometers on the calipers.â€? That makes the product more intricate to work on, more complex, more expensive to replace and increases the cost of the product. As well as making the OE part more expensive, this increases the attractiveness of the lower cost reman product. End users should not be fooled by

reman’s lower cost price tag. It doesn’t relate to the use of inferior materials, it’s more a reflection of the re-use of existing parts and technology. A brake caliper that has been properly remanufactured has been stripped down, cleaned, shot blasted and re-equipped with the appropriate seals and kit items that must always be replaced as part of a quality reman process. Only then are the friction material, sensors and electronics added. As well as the brake calipers themselves, RSL repairs the electronics components. As Andrew Bennett points out, one of the main benefits is that any previous issues with either can be amended at this point. It provides the evidence to support remanufacturer claims that in many cases, reman product can be better than the original part.

FAR RSL has also added new weaponry to take the fight to the OE suppliers. Last year it became one of the first companies to join a new UK representative organisation called the Federation of Automotive Remanufacturers (FAR). The motivation to join was clear. RSL could already demonstrate ISO accreditation. An FAR endorsement might make the difference “We deal with national trade distributors and they are keen to see their suppliers progressing to the ‘next level’. They want to know what sets us apart as a remanufacturer from other parts suppliers in the industry. They want to see what we are doing in order to demonstrate that.”

Joining FAR has already helped open doors: “FAR membership endorses the quality of the remanufacturing process in general and has also helped underpin confidence in Remanufactured Systems’ products at distributor level,” he says. For its part, FAR is delighted to be associated with the success and acknowledges the mutual benefits that are emerging: “This is strong evidence that the FAR brand not only represents quality workmanship, but that it is being accepted as such. RSL’s success is also a major boost for our profile, too.”

NEWS FROM THE INDUSTRY

New garages network in the UK GROUPAUTO UK & Ireland Ltd, the UK’s largest parts trading group, and a number of partners have launched a new garage initiative aimed at making it easier for motorists to locate independent service and repair garages. Named Approved Garages, the programme is a not-for-profit initiative that will provide consumers with a network of trusted independent garages delivering

quality and transparency. For the garages the scheme is intended to create new and repeat business. “These dual benefits will be made possible through the development of a fast and user-friendly website – www.approvedgarages.co.uk – through which motorists can find, cost and book their car service and that will therefore drive business to the Approved Garages network,” GROUPAUTO says. GROUPAUTO’s research into the servicing requirements of the motorist backs up many people’s own experience: that the internet is fast becoming the first choice for locating a garage. Last year more than 1.8 million searches were made for ‘car servicing’ in the UK. The garages in the Approved Garages network cannot simply sign up, they

have to provide guarantees for their quality and reputation, subscribe to Motor Codes, adhere to Approved Garages procedures and be selected by invitation only. The Approved Garages programme is being launched to the trade throughout January and February via a series of regional presentations and face-to-face meetings during which the concept and vision for the network are explained.

Challenging negative perceptions The purpose of the Approved Garages network is to challenge the negative perception that many motorists have of the independent garage. “The only way to do that is to channel genuine enquiries from motorists that need to find a reputable garage through to a network that will do a quality job,” stated GROUPAUTO. “This will raise the reputation of the network, the individual garages within it and the reputation of the independent automotive aftermarket.”

China-EU reman research collaboration A current 3-year EU exchange programme involving eight European and Chinese Universities, is aimed at strengthening remanufacturing and recycling practices within the electronics industry. The outcome will be implemented into the EU’s overall GREENet architecture and used to update existing European/Chinese WEEE remanufacturing research. “The importance of the programme is the rapid growth of electronics in all products, Dr. Winifred Ijomah, Head of Remanufacturing at University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland, told ReMaTecNews. “Current vehicles, for example have 30 per cent electronics and this figure is set to rise to 70 per cent even without considering electrical and hybrid vehicles. Therefore inability to remanufacture WEEE will cause a deterioration in industry sectors such as the automotive industry where remanufacturing currently thrives. Moreover, within the next few years, China is set to overtake the United States and become the world’s largest consumer of electronic products. It is important that sustainable WEEE management systems are put in place in order to responsibly handle the growing amount of old products entering the waste stream, and to

ensure their remaining value is recovered.

Key aims The programme’s key aims are to: • Develop state-of-the-art research around globally sustainable Waste Electrical and Electronic (WEEE) Management systems by linking up researchers in Europe and China. • Establish an active interna- Two PhD researchers from University of Strathclyde in Scotland, David tional research community Stewart and Gillian Hatcher, spent two months in China. dedicated to transferring knowledge and research synergies in the Logistics and Design for Remanufacture. area of e-waste management. NEWS Can remanufacturers do more to mitigate climate change? The United Nations claims that climate change and greenhouse gas effects have already raised the earth’s temperature by 0.5 degrees Celsius. Unless something dramatic is done, the increase will total four degrees by the end of the century – which, of course, would be catastrophic. Unfortunately the recent climate summit in Doha did not reach a binding agreement on limiting global warming. The scope of the future challenge, therefore, means that not only the world’s governments but also everyone who inhabits our planet must ask the question: ‘What should we do?’ Remanufacturers are in a comfortable position since they are already contributing significantly towards saving energy and reducing the carbon emissions (CO2) that cause global warming. In my recent book, I estimated the CO2 savings generated by automotive remanufacturing in Europe to be 300,000 tons per annum. Globally, of course, the figure is much higher. Based on figures published by international consultancies, I estimate global CO2 savings to be in the region of one million tons.

entire global remanufacturing industry, including other industries such as aerospace, machine tools etc. According to a recent survey by the US Department of Trade, automotive remanufacturing represents ‘only’ 30 per cent of the reman industry. On that basis, global savings from remanufacturing currently amount to at least three million tons of CO2. In addition, it should be pointed out that the whole industry keeps expanding - not just in western countries but even more in Asia. Therefore, the figure of three million tons could easily double, if not triple, in the future. Back to our own business - automotive remanufacturing in Europe - and the question of what we can do better to slow down climate change? One answer is, simply, to remanufacture more. In my view just half of all remanufacturable components are remanufactured in Europe – which leaves us with plenty of opportunity for replacing new components manufactured by OEs with remanufactured products. Naturally, the same is the case with those copied products, which we all know are of a far inferior quality. The result would be a substantial improvement to the carbon emission balance.

Bigger Picture Since these figures apply only to automotive remanufacturing, I would like to show the bigger picture by estimating the total for the

mend that each remanufacturer estimates their own contribution. What Bosch has done, every remanufacturer, small or big, is capable of doing, too. You will find some guidelines and examples of suggested calculations by Dr. Daniel KĂśhler in my book. What more can we do to enhance the ‘green performance’ of the reman industry? Did you know, for instance, that there are two areas in which remanufacturing performs less well in terms of energy consumption compared to new components? Cleaning (which uses a great deal of energy and should be constantly reviewed) and logistics. Transport of cores, in fact, significantly penalises the remanufacturing industry in terms of energy. Efficient core transport and core management is not only the make or break issue in selling remanufactured products but also an area that allows for considerable energy savings. Generally speaking, core management is our Achilles heel and we have to put more effort into solving the issues relating to cores. Let’s us not forget, that activities and investments in respect of energy savings are almost always self-financing. By embarking on such changes we can be sure to contribute to a better climate. Perhaps, APRA should consider creating certificates of excellence for members achieving higher bench marks.

International Reman Forum in Shanghai APRA’s 2nd International Remanufacturing Forum was held in the Renaissance Shanghai Pudong Hotel on December 10, 2012, the day preceding the Shanghai Automechanika. The event was opened with comments from Joe Kripli, Vice Chairman of APRA, and Yiping Huang, Asia Pacific Division Chairman of APRA. Following their comments Wang Xiao Yang, Deputy Director of the Ministry of Industrial and Industry Information spoke about China’s policy’s toward remanufacturing, and the certification program currently in place for remanufacturing in China. While China’s government is beginning to see the benefits of remanufacturing, there are still many barriers to allow remanufacturing to exist as a free enterprise. Such barriers include the fact that a dozen ministries are involved in remanufacturing, the lack of a viable core network and weak customer acceptance of remanufactured parts. Nevertheless, as Daniel Green of the US Embassy in Beijing explained: “During negotiations between China and the US government, remanufacturing is in the Top 10 List.”

Dr Huang led a discussion for what was titled a ‘News Media Event.’ This panel discussion was used to help the media understand remanufacturing and how it will affect China in the future. A second panel discussion led by Ricky Wang of Meritor explored the many problems of remanufacturing in China, and how the original 14 pilot plants were selected. While it is illegal to import used parts into China, it is acceptable to import scrap. Professor Chen Ming from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University explained the current auto recycling business. Auto recycling is a very large business in China, and provides a lot of raw material for future Chinese products. This presentation was followed by Dr. Daniel Koehler from the Guangdong Minjie Group. This group is currently a large auto recycler in China, but is now transforming to do remanufacturing on select parts of the vehicle before recycling the balance of it. The 3rd annual IRF event will take place during the Shanghai Automechanika in December 2013.

Independent workshops vs OEM/OES We all depend on new car sales. Dealers for sales of new cars and workshops and remanufacturers for service, maintenance and extending life times and value. The bigger the car parc, the better for the aftermarket. The positive side for our industry is illustrated by the fact, that the average age of passenger cars for e.g. Germany has increased from 8.3 to 8.5 years as a result of the economic crisis and uncertainties surrounding investments. The downside to this, however, is that consumer concerns have led to a significant crisis for Europe’s car production. While by October 2012, there was a strong global demand new cars, EU markets suffered huge decline. (See graph. Source: International EuroCar Seminar by R. L. Polk & Co, Essen, Germany. At the same time, however, the Independent Aftermarket, has shown significantly higher growth than the OES-segment in recent years as a result of which the OEMs have been forced to compensate for the decline in sales and to counteract the IAM developments. To promote their OES-business, raise spare part sales and increase workshop capacity, the OEMs have defined two target groups: A) Car owners of the II and III segments, i.e. cars of between four and eight years, and cars over eight years and B) the independent car workshops themselves. Target group A is affected by the following: • Price reduction on spare parts and service (VW, economy packages) • Availability and use of 2nd-line quality spare parts (VW, economy package) • Price reductions on spare parts (BMW ‘Value Line’) • Allmakes – programmes (Eurorepar, Motaquip, Motrio) • PR: • OE-branding as TOP-quality • Promoting car functionality to maintaining value • Repairs using reman parts

26 l ReMaTecNews

So how can FIRM react to this and what can we do for our members? We must continue to promote the IAM as a value alternative and present our workshop’s sophisticated competencies in respect of failure and break-down diagnosis. Engine competence is our unique selling point vis-à-vis customers, i.e. the segment II and III car owners. Under a variety of names and programs Opel, VW, BMW and Mercedes (e.g. NORA at VW, FWLZ by Opel) offer original, branded spare parts at significant lower prices (up to 50%) to AIM workshops. This is combined with

(engine) spare part dealers in respect of key critical success factors like availability, supply capacity and price. In addition, we carry out our work with original branded parts. Although we accept the ‘same-quality-strategy’ of spare part manufacturers and dealers, we achieve bigger margins when sourcing our parts from OES. In turn, this enables us to offer better sales prices. As a second benefit, we avoid discussing part quality with customers or incompetent, uninformed ‘car-experts’ regarding engine failures and break-downs. Last, but not least, the integrated technical support we receive from OEM/OES is comforting in our daily business. Therefore, we and all the workshops belonging to our national members do not have a spare part problem.

Closer look

full technical support (all needed technical information and specifications, comprehensive individual and personal support) by special trained service staff in OES-workshops. Even in case of warranty services, by independent workshops using original, branded parts, OEM / OES adapted the workshop’s reimbursement for the spare parts exchange (disassembly and assembly).

Impact Does this impact on our business? Yes - and in very positive way. Indeed, we are in a rather comfortable situation! With OES as an appropriate alternative, we have no problems with procuring spare parts from independent

In fact, it’s the engine spare part dealers that have problems because, between them, they lose turn-over of several million euros! To make up for this, they should take a closer look at engine remanufacturing which would allow them to put together a package of alternative measures. But are they really interested in engine reman? Renault has even stepped-up its OEM / OES – activities for new customers by directmailing all French independent repair workshops about the benefits of Renault-remanufactured spare parts and components. Other OEMs with reman activities will follow. As competition gets tougher lobbying and PR is crucial and must have top priority in our work in 2013. With our close cooperation with APRA and CLEPA and as a partner of ReMaTec, FIRM has a solid basis to do just that. Good luck and best wishes for 2013. Volker Schittenhelm

ATP Industries of Cannock in the UK recently introduced its latest initiative in the transmission market, a new mechatronic transmission controller. During the ATRA’s Powertrain exhibition in Las Vegas in November, ATP and its US subsidiary, PTM in Ann Arbor, Michigan, attracted substantial interest in the controller, which Technical Director Amir Fallah describes as follows: “The system is offered as a turnkey solution or can be integrated with third party software. Currently supported transmissions include Volkswagen DSG, ZF 6HP, GM 6L80/90, and 6T70/75. The forward thinking approach to the controller design enables future transmissions to be supported with a software upgrade. Established early in 2012, FAR hopes to unite remanufacturers across the automotive spectrum, providing them with one voice that can speak directly with government representatives at national and international level. “The autoreman website explains our mission, defines our role and highlights the benefits for our new members”, says FAR spokesman and independent remanufacturing industry consultant Brian Ludford.
