APRA /RAI agree on US show 2014 10
Highlights of the Year
In terms of the automotive industry, the name CDTI is a relatively unknown entity. Behind the name, however, is a hight tech giant that works with some of the biggest names in IT. Now the company is planning to enter automotive remanufacturing in a big way. Judging by its past performance the name CDTI is set to become a significant factor in ECU remanufacturing.
A major new development in the world of automotive remanufacturing was sealed at last month’s Big R show in Las Vegas. After months of preparation APRA, the Automotive Remanufacturers Association, and Amsterdam RAI, the owners of the ReMaTec exhibitions in the Netherlands, formally concluded an agreement to establish a new US reman show from 2014.
At the threshold of a new year, ReMaTecNews looks back at twelve eventful months for remanufacturers and presents some of the highlights of the year.

EDITOR’S LETTER
ReMaTecNews Volume 13 – Number 6 – December 2013
No, the lifeblood of reman is not cores – it’s people By the time you read these lines a significant number of remanufacturing events will have closed their doors after some busy days. Big R and AAPEX in Las Vegas, the World Remanufacturing Summit, APRA’s Reman Forum and Automechanika in Shanghai are some names that spring to mind. All of them evidence that remanufacturing is sustaining its upwards projection. It’s safe to state that many attendees at these events would have been known with each other. This is no coincidence and it’s not due to the modest size of remanufacturing compared to the entire automotive/CV industry either. Whether competitors, partners, suppliers, friends or just acquaintences, one characteristic of people in the reman industry is that once you’re in, you tend to stay. In many cases for life. That is not merely a matter of loyalty to an employer. There is more to it than that. It’s not just a matter of comfort and job security either. Like in any other industry businesses do fail and owners and staff find themselves looking for other income. Everyone knows that. The real reason is that reman attracts a special type of person. People with genuine professional skills. People who are inventive, creative and looking for solutions. People who like challenges. And people who take genuine pride in working in an industry that fulfills needs of their communities and for society in general. You can safely bet that anyone who reads these lines – and the articles in this magazine - knows scores of such people. From exhibition halls around the world, from smaller workshops and from large production halls, from the number of scientific institutions that increasingly provide tools and processes, inspiration and ideas, to remanufacturers. It’s often said that cores are the lifeblood of the reman industry. There is much truth in that. Nevertheless, perhaps, an even greater truth is that it’s the people in the industry who keeps carrying it forward - year after year to the benefit of our planet. Often without any special recognition outside their own workplace. As another year closes, ReMaTecNews extends our best wishes for the festive season to everyone involved in the industry and their families. They deserve it.

Joe Kripli adds Presidency of APRA to role as Chairman
Joe Kripli and George Davis
Joe Kripli, one of the reman industry’s best known profiles and a frequent lecturer on all things reman world-wide was elected President of APRA (Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association) shortly before this edition of ReMaTecNews went to print. The decision by APRA’s Board means that Kripli will combine the post as operational head of APRA to his chairmanship of the organisation for 2014. He will be the first person to hold both posts simultanaeously. At the same time George Davis, formerly of Remy Inc. and himself a past chairman of APRA, joins the organization on a full time basis, focusing on technical issues. The changes follow the retirement of long term President Bill Gager, who has led APRA
for 35 years. Joe Kripli who ascended to the chairmanship at APRA’s annual meeting in November, will assume the post as President on January 1st. By agreement he will, however, continue his work with Wabco Reman until his current contract expires in 2015. “I have spent my entire working life in the reman industry and I’m really pleased to be able to give something back to an industry and an organization that has given me so much,” Kripli told ReMaTecNews. “The industry offers enormous potential and our challenge is to bring various parts and organisations closer together. Only in this way will we be fully able to exploit the many opportunities ahead.” One key question for the immediate future, in Kripli’s opinion, concerns the issue of reman
definition. Despite several attempts over the years different parts of the world have still been unable to reach a common definition. “One important task for us is to lobby efficiently in Washington and other centres of decision making around the world,” Kripli said. “If we cannot find a common definition for what reman is, how can we persuade the politicians, and, indeed, the public of the importance of remanufacturing?” Read the interview with Joe Kripli on Page 31

NEWS FROM THE INDUSTRY
Large tire reman centre to open in Canada
PSH expands in The Netherlands
PSH, the Dutch supplier of starter/alternators, test benches, cleaning machinery and other equipment for electrical workshops, looks forward to February 2014. By then the company expects to celebrate the completion of a major new warehouse/office facility. Once completed the expansion will double PSH’s current space, to 8200 sq. meters. “The added space will allow us to enlarge our inventory and, therefore, offer our customers an even better service,” says Public Relations Manager
Bas Pos. “This applies both to the number of units and the range available. Moreover, in future, we will have a new showroom, where we can display the various equipment such as test benches to our customers.” The new building is located adjacent to the company’s existing headquarters in s’Graveland in the Netherlands. An active player in the market for the past several years PSH operates branches in Spain, South Africa and China and offices in Belgium and Germany.
A small town in the Canadian province of Ontario will host a $37-million plant with a capacity of more than three million remanufactured passenger vehicle tires. Green Arc Tire Manufacturing Inc., plans to open North America’s largest tire remanufacturing plant in St. Mary’s in Ontario creating 340 new jobs, where it will produce affordable, eco-friendly tires for winter driving. “Our goal is to help make the winter driving season safer, by making winter tires that are affordable for more drivers,” Green Arc chief operating officer Mike DiCenzo said. The company believes that remanufactured tires will cost 30 to 50 per cent less compared to standard winter tires. Using “almost all” of the used tires’ components, Green Arc claims its tires will have one of the highest post-consumer contents of any recycled product on the market. Of the 340 jobs created at the new facility, the company said 40 positions will be reserved for veterans and former members of the Canadian military. The facility is scheduled to open in February 2014.

Detroit Reman taking a closer look at automotive A first time exhibitor at the remanufacturing pavilion at the recent AAPEX aftermarket show in Las Vegas, Detroit Reman, one of America’s key remanufacturers, used the occasion for taking a closer look at automotive remanufacturing. The company, which is part of Daimler USA, has a long-standing reputation for quality HD remanufacturing and already has considerable experience with remanufactured Chrysler and Mercedes diesel products. “We’re here to see and learn and to look at potential suppliers,” said Betsy Ballard, Director, Product Development and Growth. “We believe that the space between automotive and HD is shrinking with some people moving into HD so we want to examine the potential for us in automotive remanufacturing. We believe that our skills match those needed in automotive remanufacturing very well.” The company says that Detroit Reman is currently in talks with a couple of major remanufacturers and that it’s considering opportunities within engine reman and turbo chargers as well as in transmissions and electronics. The latter, in particular, is an upcoming area of significant interest. “Electronics is becoming bigger by the day,” Betsy Ballard said. “If you want to be a leader in this industry, it’s essential that you are in electronics.” In September, Detroit Reman underlined its commitment to remanufacturing by significantly extending its remanufacturing and manufacturing facility in Hibbing, Minnesota to a 60,000 sq. ft. site near the local airport. The move aims at providing the necessary space to support the company’s electronic manufacturing and remanufacturing activities for the foreseeable future. At present, the Detroit reman division operates from several sites across America, employing a total of 1,400 people. The company says it hopes to have them all under the same roof in Minnesota by January 2015. As part of the Daimler AG family (Daimler Trucks North America), Detroit Reman has steadily been strengthening its position in the remanufacture and manufacture of electronics. In addition to its involvement in heavy-duty equipment, truck, and passenger car markets, more recent product segments include agriculture, transit and rail applications. Las Vegas in November 2013 – Capital of reman A fresh start for remanufacturing shows in Las Vegas. Every year in late October/early November as far back most people remember, Las Vegas has attracted remanufacturers and their customers and suppliers from across the world to the Big R reman show in particular and to Industry Week, the motor industry’s massive aftermarket show, in general.
There is no denying, however, that for the automotive and HD remanufacturing industry, this year represents a development that will leave a mark on the reman community well into the future. The preliminary announcement in September of a new partnership between APRA, the Automotive Parts

Remanufacturers Association, and showorganisers, Amsterdam RAI, was officially sealed when the two parties agreed the contract for the future Big R/ReMaTecUSA exhibition. Planned to launch in early November 2014, in Las Vegas, the Big R/ReMaTecUSA was heralded by both parties as a major new initiative for automotive remanufacturing. “For some time, we have felt the need to update the Big R show, which has served remanufacturing so well for many years,“ said Nick Staub, the outgoing chairman, who signed the deal on behalf of APRA. “We have worked with Amsterdam RAI in Europe for several years and are convinced that we have found the right partner with whom to move forward. Amsterdam RAI has considerable expertise in organizing shows and with APRA’s experience as the world’s foremost trade organisation for remanufacturers, all signs are that, together, we’re about to create a new force for the good of the industry. We’re certainly looking forward to next year with considerable expectation. This is a major new initiative, which is set to benefit the entire industry.” Optimism The optimism was clearly in evidence on the other side, too. Having operated for more than 120 years Amsterdam RAI (which also owns ReMaTecNews Magazine) is one of Europes’ largest conference and exhibition centres and also organizes shows in other parts of the world, including China. Amsterdam RAI has run the ReMaTec reman shows successfully since 2005. Especially in recent years, the biennial ReMaTec shows have expanded considerably in terms of both floor space, exhibitor an visitor numbers. After this year’s record show in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, in June, the next ReMaTec in Europe will run from 14-16 June 2015. “We’re indeed pleased that we have been able to agree with APRA on joining each other in order to move the reman industry forward,” said Theo Lingmont, International Director. “Along the way, we have had some very useful discussions and have a common plan for how we best proceed from here. Like our partner in this venture, APRA, we feel very confident that the next twelve months, and beyond, will see some interesting developments.”
Big R APRA’s Big R in the Tropicana Hotel this year attracted special interest for two reasons, one being the last bearing the name of Big R only, the other the retirement of long-standing President Bill Gager (see page 14). From next year the show will take place at the Rio Hotel off the Las Vegas Strip, which offers larger facilities and, therefore, scope for further expansion. These will be needed, amongst other, because the 2014 edition will co-locate with ATRA’s PowerTrain show. Attendance at the Tropicana event was on a par with recent years with many exhibitors expressing confidence in the way business developing. Some exhibitors from previous years, however, had chosen to sit this year’s show out until the future has become clearer. “We have noticed this and we shall put in an extra effort to win back, those that for one reason or another decided to “wait-and-see“ said the 2013/14 chairman, Joe Kripli. “We’re fully focused to prove that this show is the best possible way for remanufacturers to gain new knowledge, exchange ideas and to network.” Industry Week The two mammoth shows, AAPEX for the aftermarket in general and SEMA for the
The Rio Convention Centre in Las Vegas. The location of BigR/ReMaTecUSA 2014. Specialty Equipment Market, gathered more than 160.000 attendees to the more than 4000 exhibitors’ offerings. With the exception of the Automechanika shows in Frankfurt, Germany, every two years, Las Vegas in early November dwarfs anything else the motor industry’s aftermarket presents in terms of what’s new, nearly new, innovative in think-
ing and pioneering products. Compared to these huge shows, the reman segment may appear modest. Nevertheless, at both events, remanufacturing played a larger role than in previous years not least with MERA’s growing remanufacturing pavillion at AAPEX. The new BigR/ReMaTecUSA, next year is bound to add yet another dimension.

What happens in Las Vegas stays in Las Vegas That’s what gamblers, hotel managers, casino and night club owners like to say, and believe, about life in “Sin City,” Las Vegas, the gambling capital of the world, USA’s largest convention venue and the home of the Big R reman exhibition and its larger siblings, AAPEX and SEMA. Well, for once we thought that we would break with tradition. So here are a collection of images from a week, that, once again, drew some 150.000 attendees to Sin City.

“Mr. APRA” departs from the stage Friends and colleagues celebrated Bill Gager’s retirement as president of APRA in Las Vegas
For someone to work for the same institution for 35 years is not exactly on everyday occurrence. No wonder Bill Gager, President of the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association, APRA, was given an emotional send-off into retirement when Bill attended his final Big R show in Las Vegas in early November. Speaker after speaker, from USA, from Europe and from Asia used the opportunity to celebrate the work and career of the man who has led the association for more than three decades and from December 31 hands over to his successor, Joe Kripli of Wabco Reman. As everyone present at the celebration of the retiring president at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas, knows Bill Gager has presided over tremendous change in APRA’s history and that, without him, his successors would be embarking on an entirely different journey into the future. Spearheading APRA’s lobbying efforts over the years, organizing major
events, including the Big R show, together with Fernand Weiland, a co-founder of the European division, an instigator of the Asian Division and much besides, Bill Gager has dominated APRA since the late 1980s. And this short list is not exhaustive. Together with Mema, the Motor and Equipment Manufacturers Association and SEMA, the Special Equipment Manufacturers Association, Bill was instrumental in establishing PAACE Automechanika, Latin America’s most important aftermarket show. When asked about the highlights of his stewardship, however, he does not hesitate: “Recovering from the aftermath of 9/11, when we had to cancel the Big R, was a nightmare. The effect lasted for years. The core evaluation issue, where we fought a long battle with IRS, the tax authorities, was another crucial episode. We won and the reman industry benefited enormously.” Over the years Bill has seen fundamental changes in the industry. The bigger players

have become bigger while smaller operators have disappeared, either into bankruptcy or swallowed up by competitors. That, to some extent, remains the situation today. None of this, however, shakes his basic confidence in remanufacturing. “Yes, the bigger ones will continue to get bigger, while the smaller ones will specialize. There is lots of potential, not least within heavy duty, odd ball units, specialized tasks. I believe that consumers will, increasingly, be tempted towards “reman” rather than “new”. The advantages are becoming clearer all the time. Take also anything to do with electronics and telematics. The opportunities are fantastic.” So, no regrets? “None, at all. I have been privileged to work in an industry characterized by openness, friendliness and wonderful people. The only thing, I could think of is that more could perhaps have been done to unite the various remanufacturing organisations together. In my view, the industry can only benefit if we speak with one voice.”
William Schwarck, Editor-in-Chief, ReMatecNews, thanked Bill Gager for his assistance over many years.

A major new star joins the premier reman league Global player, CTDI, announces its entry into automotive electronics remanufacturing . The name CTDI does not rank among the most familiar in automotive or heavy duty remanufacturing. In the greater world of international telecommunications and logistics, yes. Within the confines of automotive reman, hardly. That may be about to change. Making the somewhat surprising move from telecommunications IT into automotive reman, the Pennsylvania-based CTDI, (the name stands for Communictions Test Design, Inc.) has it’s eyes firmly on winning a significant market share for its products, first in America, then in Europe and the rest of the world. The likelihood is that it will succeed, thus making a major impact in an already competitive market for electronics remanufacturing and logistics. Not only does the company boast 38 years of experience within its field, it also has very substantial resources available to further its aims. Currently, it handles in excess of 25 million reverse logistics units per year, employs a world-wide workforce of 6,500, is responsible for 80 million annual transactions and clocks up a yearly turnover of 7.5 billion US dollars. Not peanuts in any industry. As Jerry Parsons, the Chairman who founded the business together with his father, Don, and brother, Dick, back in 1975, told ReMaTecNews in a recent conversation: “We have been looking at the automotive aftermarket for some time and we have made the strategic decision to enter it because we believe there is considerable potential here for us. We believe that we can do well and we intend to prove it.” So far the family behind CTDI has not had all that much to prove. As a full-service, global engineering reman and logistics company, the business has seen remarkable growth and today has a number of world-class names in its customer base. These include AT&T, Bell Canada, Cisco, Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom, T-Mobile, and Verizon to name a few. 66 high-tech sites To support its customers CTDI operates 66 high-tech sites in 15 countries across the world in addition to its HQ in West Chester, Pennsylvania, the European headquarters in Malsch in Germany and the Asian Pacific HQ in Beijing. Services comprise integrated service solutions for a variety of technologies within wireless repair and logistics, network deployment solutions and a wide array of

Jerry Parsons, Chairman of CTDI and the instigator of CTDI’s move into automotive remanufacturing other high-tech services. To spearhead its foray into automotive CTDI has chosen Mark Shasteen, a 30 year veteran of the automotive industry, who spent 13 years in a number of executive leadership positions with Delphi

Corporation before joining CTDI last December. Reporting directly to Jerry Parsons, the Chairman, Shasteen is now charged with transforming the strategic objectives into reality. “We are thrilled to have Mark join CTDI to help launch our reman solution to the automotive industry,” Parsons says. “He has a deep understanding of where the vehicle electronic component business is going, which now represents a large percentage of the cost of a new vehicle. He is the ideal person to help lead us forward.” Reman 8.0 The company calls the tool with which it intends to achieve its goals “Reman 8.0” and describes it as a comprehensive solution for servicing complex automotive electronics. “Reman 8.0 is a one-stop solution for vehicle manufacturers and suppliers in the automo-
tive industry leveraging CTDI’s 38 years of technical expertise in microelectronics and mechatronics, test engineering and industry leading remanufacturing capabilities,” Shasteen says. “Unlike the life-cycle of cars, the technology curve for electronics is getting shorter and shorter,” explained Mark Shasteen. “With automotive electronics, the latest generation of devices simply won’t fit or function in older vehicles. In most cases, you need the original design to effectively perform the repair. However, sustaining production capability for older generation electronic parts is increasingly difficult and costly, and in many cases simply not practical. This makes remanufacturing the ideal and often the only option to meet vehicle life cycle demands.” ETOS More specifically, the Reman 8.0 solution builds upon CTDI’s electronics remanufacturing service portfolio which includes forward and reverse logistics, core management, component level repairs that meet OE standards, warranty screening and sustainable life-cycle solutions. Additionally, its Electronic Tracking and Ordering System, (ETOS), offers web-based order management and visibility to all remanufacturing activity. This applies to all the company’s 66 remanufacturing locations world-wide, including 41 locations in North America and will further strength CTDI’s position as the largest electronics remanufacturer in the world performing 7.5 million component level repairs on a wide range of complex technologies annually. Now the groundwork has been laid,
Mark Shasteen, Vice President, and Jerry Parsons, Chairman - committed to automotive reman Parsons and Shasteen will look beyond the American borders. Europe is on the list with Asia to follow. “We have analyzed the European market in depth and will be going there soon,” says Shasteen. “There is no doubt that the opportunities are significant. There’s a
whole new world opening up there.” Based on Parsons’ and Shasteen’s plans, there seems little reason to dispute that. There is a whole new world opening up and CTDI clearly intends to play its role in it.
Mark Shasteen is heading up CTDI’s endeavours to secure a prominent place in the market place.

People on the move 2013 was a year of change for many people in the reman industry. Here is a selection of those for whom the year meant a change to a career – or a lifestyle.
Two Tims switch positions Springfield Remanufacturing Corporation, the Missouri-based remanufacturer that ranks among the world’s foremost remanufacturing companies, is seeing changes at the top-level. Having heading up SRC’s electrical division for some years, Tim Roth, a future chairman of the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association, is moving over to take charge of the company’s power systems division. At the electrical division Tim Roth will be succeeded by 31 year old Tim Stack, who was previously in charge of logistics at the renowned company. A frequent participant in reman conferences and conventions across the world, Tim Roth is a familiar face across the reman industry. The name Stack, too, is well-known in that he’s the son of Jack Stack, SRC’s founder and Chief Executive. Looks like both divisions will remain in safe hands.

MERA President Receives Leadership Award
John Chalifoux, president of the Motor & Equipment Remanufacturers Association, was recognized for outstanding achievement in sales and marketing during a recent gathering of the Marketing & Sales Executives Association in Michigan. Chalifoux received one of two MSED Platinum Awards presented during the 2013 gala in recognition of his leadership of MERA, the Motor and Equipment Remanufacturers Association. The association was launched in 2011 to promote the environmental, economic and product performance benefits of remanufactured products. Today, it includes 90 member companies including remanufacturers, suppliers and professional services firms from the automotive and heavy-duty, off-road (HDOR) sectors of the parts remanufacturing industry.
After 18 years with Rochester Institute of Technology, RIT, Senior Engineer Bob German has left for the private sector. Earlier in the year German, a well known lecturer and consultant in all things reman joined electronics remanufacturer, Flight Systems in Lewisberry, Pennsylvania after having spent his entire working life with Dr. Nabil Nasr’s Centre for Integrated Manufacturing and Remanufacturing Studies in Rochester. “I decided to leave because I wanted to be even more involved with the reman industry.“ Bob German said. “My skillset is end of life product management and my position with Flight Systems will involve time and motion studies, optimization of cleaning products and helping to bring new products to the market.“ While with RIT, Bob German acted as a technical adviser for companies like General Motors and Caterpillar and in such diverse locations as Singapore and Mexico. “I’ve had the luxury of seeing some of the world’s best reman operations and I have worked with a lot of smart people. I look forward to using my experience with Flight Systems, which to me is a first class business.

Dennis Jacinto retires from Lester Catalog A familiar face in reman circles on both sides of the Atlantic, Dennis Jacinto, recently announced his retirement from running Lester Catalog, the tech-info system for WAI Global. Jacinto, who was Chairman of APRA in 2012, acquired Lester Catalog in 1997 and turned the relatively modest print catalog business into a major source of information for everything related to the starters and alternators business. The catalog had become widely used in the reman industry, when Jacinto sold the business to Weatherill Associates/ WAI Global in 2010, However, he continued to run it for the new owners until this year. As remanufacturing has changed, Lester Catalog has changed along with it. Originally, the catalog was largely based on
Philip Falk goes independent For several years, Phillip Falk has been the external face of Canadian manufacturer, D&V Electronics - a figure that has been hard to miss, at exhibitions world-wide. That is about to change. At the age of 48 Philip Falk has decided on a career change. Instead of marketing D&V’s line of electric motor and drive testers and testers for alternators and starters and assisting their users on behalf of D&V, Philip Falk is starting up as an independent consultant. “I believe that there is a significant need for someone who’s available to advise users of testers as they go along,” Philip Falk says. “Over my years with D&V I have, of course, obtained an in-depth knowledge of it’s tester and I feel that I can use that knowledge to help many of those, who use their products.” D&V’s alternator and starter testers are machines sold throughout the world to Tier One manufacturers including Remy, Bosch, Valeo, Denso and Mitsubishi. Accordingly, over the years Philip Falk has built up a substantial network within the industry. He can
look forward to making good use of it now. Phillip Falk’s company name is “StrAuCon International” (Strategic Automotive Consulting International). It’s based in Southfield, Michigan.
Jef Verelst, Remy Europe - the growth continues General Manager, Remy Europe, since early 2012, Jef Verelst, is happy to report continued progress for the renowned remanufacturer in 2013. Since the company’s extensive restructuring process was completed in 2011, REMY Europe has seen overall double digit growth especially on the reman passenger car segment but also in starters & alternators as well as in brake calipers , steering racks and pumps. “So far, in 2013 we are experiencing 9% improvement over the same period last year on reman starters & alternators while our growth for the other reman products is even going faster,” he told ReMaTecNews. “For these product lines, we should end the year with about 15% growth.

paper and covered more than starters and alternators. Today data-services via the internet accounts for 90 per cent of the Lester business. Dennis Jacinto was not only a provider of information for s/a remanufacturers. Although it goes back in time, he spent his early years working for a supplier of components for electrical remanufacturers and later, in 1983, started his own company rebuilding starter drives and solenoids. In the 90s, however, he switched his attention full-time to the catalog business and was a successful owner of Lester until he sold out to WAI. He’s now looking forward to a more leisurely life – and, perhaps, a bit of consulting in the industry he knows so well.
Dr. Daniel Kohler 32 year-old German engineer, Dr.-Ing. Daniel C. F. Köhler, a former scientist at the University of Bayreuth, has joined Knorr Bremse to strengthen the renowned brake manufacturers expertise in remanufacturing. Kohler left the Chair of Manufacturing and Remanufacturing in Bayreuth in 2012 to take up a position as a remanufacturing specialist with the Mingjie Group in Guangzhou, China, but returned to his home country for a post with Knorr earlier this year. While with University of Bayreuth Dr. Kohler was a frequent speaker on reman technology at seminars in Europe. Munich-based Knorr-Bremse Group, is the world’s leading manufacturer of braking systems for rail and commercial vehicles. Other business activities include automatic door systems, rail vehicle air conditioning systems and torsional vibration dampers for internal combustion engines.

Prior to this, he was President of Remy Power Products which serves the light duty aftermarket in North America after having joined Remy in 2006 from Eagle-Picher Automotive where he was President of the Wolverine Specialty Materials business. At other stages of his career, Pittas, who holds a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering, has held positions with Honeywell, UOP and ARI Technologies. In the overall picture, reman continues to be crucial to Remy’s development – as it has been for many years. A global leader in remanufactured starters and alternators, the company is sensitive to regulatory changes, such as ever more stringent environmental requirements across the world. Nevertheless Pittas sees the opportunities as well as the challenges. “In fact, we’ve just expanded our reman program in Europe with a few hundred part numbers and we’ve done the same in Mexico. In addition we have one of the few remanufacturing licences in China at our facility in Wuhan. As I said, we believe there will be opportunities coming from there.”

Global report highlights “huge reman benefits” A new report on the automotive remanufacturing industry by an American research institute draws a highly positive picture of the outlook for the industry. Remanufactured automotive products present huge economic benefits compared to new, manufactured products. Moreover, since remanufacturing does not involve actual production of new products, it demands very little raw material, energy and other production inputs and therefore reduces the environmental impact of production, the report states. Additionally, the process of salvaging and restoring the majority of end of life automotive parts which would otherwise end up in landfills, augments the attractiveness of this production model, the report adds. The report by Global Industry Analysts, Inc. in California analyzes the worldwide markets for Automotive Parts Remanufacturing with with separate comprehensive analytics for US, Japan, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Rest of World. “Against the backdrop of expanding vehicle
fleet and increasing average life of vehicles on road, attractive potential exists for remanufactured auto parts in the upcoming years,” the report says. “Increasing average life of vehicles across the world is especially spewing opportunities for the market as it results in greater need for refurbishments and repairs. Production of remanufactured automotive parts and components is increasingly migrating to low cost destinations such as Asia-Pacific and Eastern Europe due to the availability of low cost labor in many of these countries.” The report points out how remanufacturing holds great potential in this industry, as vehicle parts and components are subject to significant wear and tear, which necessitates frequent repairs or replacements during the operating life of the vehicle. The auto parts remanufacturing market is inversely proportional to the economic growth in a sense that when there is strong economic growth, demand for remanufactured products tends to fall as higher dispos-
able income levels encourage vehicle owners to replace worn out vehicles rather than extend their useful lives and replace worn out parts with remanufactured goods. Demand for remanufactured parts Alternatively, when economic growth is weak and consumer spending low, demand for remanufactured parts typically increases as services and replacement of worn out parts proves to be much cheaper than replacing the entire vehicle. Besides economic trends, the number of vehicles on roads, average age of vehicle fleet, and number of miles travelled also influence demand for vehicle remanufactured auto parts and components. “Used products” Until recently, remanufactured products have generally been regarded as ‘used products’ and the scepticism surrounding their functional viability therefore has forced weak demand, particularly among the affluent

population. However, growing awareness levels among vehicle owners on economic and environmental benefits of remanufactured parts has been helping to drive increased adoption. Also, with the present economic quagmire wielding a severe blow to disposable incomes, demand for these products is steadily rising among consumers of all income groups who are increasingly looking to cut costs. Stigma As the stigma associated with such parts fades and prices of new components weigh heavily on pockets, consumers will show marked inclination towards these products in their vehicles, the report predicts. Apart from consumers, the concept is also catching

up among producers, as the pressing requirement to reduce production costs and meet various environmental standards, is causing component producers to re-think their production strategy and opt for remanufacturing ‘used’ automotive components. “The economic advantage of this production model for remanufacturers can be put into perspective by the fact that remanufactured products offer cost savings in the range of 45%-60% as compared to a newly manufactured product,“ the report states. “Remanufacturing brings about substantial savings in energy costs, as they do not mandate melting of recovered products. These savings lower the cost of producing these goods, thus increasing profit margins. Even
for consumers, remanufactured products are a major economic benefit as a majority of costs savings realized by remanufacturers by eliminating mainstream production can be passed onto customers.

NEWS Promoting remanufacturing – an array of opportunities Generally speaking, when we discuss remanufacturing we tend to highlight one point in particular. In reality, of course, remanufacturing is a highly complex business. Which provides me with plenty of opportunity to write about different aspects of our industry – and you with an equal number of chances to promote reman in your communities. The pages of ReMaTecNews are also evidence of this. Some key issues remain at the heart of any serious promotional effort on behalf of automotive and commercial vehicle remanufacturing. As they are worth dwelling on, I shall list them here. Indeed, they should be repeated at regular intervals.
• Remanufacturing is an old, mature industry. In fact, it was founded as early as in the last century. Since then, it has developed by leaps and bounds, but the basic concept remains intact: to offer parts that are restored from an existing defective unit, using standardised industrial processes. • Remanufacturing is fully up to date. Although the remanufacturing industry is subject to constant change as new products emerge and old products become obsolete, most remanufacturers operate at the high end of the scale. Some examples of the change are wiper motors or water pumps that are no longer key products, while new advanced units like ECUs and instrument clusters are coming to the fore. e-Mobility, with new technical solutions, will provide next generation products for remanufacturing. • Remanufacturing is international. Over the past decade, our industry has developed from a regional or national base to become truly interna-
tional in scope. More and more remanufacturers are developing a global footprint of their operations. This is clearly evident when you visit events organised or supported by APRA, such as ReMaTec, the BigR show as well as remanufacturing summits and symposiums. The audience is international and the content of the presentations global. • Remanufacturing is political. Most politicians now agree that remanufacturing delivers huge social benefits. It provides local employment, reduces industry’s CO2 footprint and offers end users quality spare parts at a reasonable price – even for older vehicles. Reman business is supported by the European Commission and a number of governments, including China. It is also part of certain free trade agreements. • Remanufacturing has similarities to the financial world. From a financial point of view, selling remanufactured products with a surcharge can be likened to selling options within a given time frame to the customer the option to sell you a core in a given time frame on Wall Street or in the City of London. This approach opens up new business opportunities and will certainly be a driver of change.

By Peter Bartel, Chairman APRA Europe
• Remanufacturing is high tec. Cleaning technology and reverse engineering has developed significantly in recent years. The standard sand blasting machines and shakers are out to be replaced by wet or solid carbon dioxide blasting systems and 3D scanners. New possibilities for data logging and signal analysers will create new scope for our business. Moreover, universities and research institutions are increasingly focusing on remanufacturing. • Remanufacturing is the future. Future economic growth clearly depends on the way in which we will be able to handle the restrictions of limited raw materials on our planet. Consequently, urban mining, the technology to resource raw material from our existing urban environment, is a key competence for the future. The remanufacturing business model, including reverse logistics, is a genuine blue print of future industry. The worldwide trade association, APRA, promotes the remanufacturing industry and provides members with a network to develop their business. Check out www.apra-europe.org.
APRA: The way forward In Las Vegas Joe Kripli was elected chairman of APRA for 2013-2014. We speak to him.
What would you like to have achieved by the time you leave as Chairman of APRA 12 months from now? I would like to see membership increase not just in APRA but within our Industry. According to the US International Trade Commission Report on Remanufacturing released last year, there are approximately 8000 remanufacturing companies in the USA. My question is, why do only 25% of them participate in remanufacturing organizations? And I am not just talking about APRA, I am talking about all remanufacturing organizations combined in the USA. Where are the other 75%? If we are going to be a strong industry and have a voice in Washington DC, then we need the support of all the companies and people who make a respectable living off remanufacturing. I ask all remanufacturing companies to support YOUR Industry. What, are the most urgent challenges facing APRA – and how can they be solved? One of the most urgent is that we need a Global Remanufacturing Definition. After 50 years, you would think that as an industry we could accomplish this. How can we expect our politicians to support our companies and the remanufacturing industry when we cannot agree on a simple definition. We need to make it simple for the entire world to understand but at the same time reference a process that defines remanufacturing. Each organization needs to step away from specifics so that at the very least we get a general remanufacturing definition out to the public and to the politicians. It will strengthen our Industry. Second is getting the general public to understand what is remanufacturing. They understand recycling but do not really understand remanufacturing. We need the public’s support when it comes to government support. We need to better market remanufacturing.
How do you see APRA develop in the middle term, say the next 5 years? APRA is member driven, so we need communication from our members to drive APRA where they want it to be driven. What are the members need’s? Right now we are focusing on lobbying for the “right to repair” because of the complexities of the new products entering the market such as electronics and mechatronics. There are many challenges with software and emission related specifications. How do you see remanufacturing in general develop over the same period, eg. 5 years. There is no doubt we have entered the Mechatronic era, which brings with it far more challenges to the remanufacturing industry. We have begun to see the shift from purely mechanical products to mechatronics and this brings an array of challenges for the business owner as well as for the technician. Our members are transforming their businesses to handle the changing product. Some have made the investments and developed strategies to manage this change, others need to get on board NOW. Interesting though when you speak globally, and especially when we consider China, remanufacturing is just being born there, it’s very exciting.
federal and state agencies over the years to resolve issues that affected remanufacturers. If APRA had not been around to do this work on behalf of the industry, the reman industry would look a lot different today. All too often we go to battle in Washington DC over bills or regulations that are detrimental to our members and I don’t think the members realize what APRA does and how important it is to the survival of their businesses. This is really what their membership buys. APRA is the members’ business representative in Washington DC to help promote and protect the industry. Do you see a need for international reman associations/organisations coming closer together, even merging? Yes, if we don’t, we will not grow this Industry exponentially as it needs to grow to support all of our members globally. And this simply starts with a Global Definition of Remanufacturing.
What do you consider the most important achievements of APRA over the association’s lifetime? To be honest, I don’t think people realize what this organization has accomplished. First of all it is the only remanufacturing organization that is globally represented on 3 continents. Second, I don’t think people remember when APRA fought the IRS on the valuation of cores. This was a long fought issue that finally was resolved in favor of the remanufacturing industry. Third, APRA also worked very hard to get a tax credit for the purchase of equipment used in remanufacturing. Fourth, APRA has worked with many

FIRM – our programme, our manifesto Germany’s recent election campaign saw several parties fighting for votes through the intense promotion of their manifestos. FIRM similarly fights for votes - in the form of new members – to secure the strongest possible platform for Europe’s only engine reman association. What, then, is our election programme? What is our manifesto? Energy savings, resource efficiency, landfill reduction and reduction of air pollution are some of the crucial effects of remanufacturing – the value millions of tonnes of carbon emissions saved cannot be overestimated. Waste management was yesterday – today remanufacturing is the order of the day. The automotive reman industry also provides thousands of jobs. Reman associations estimate the number of FTEs in Europe’s independent automotive remanufacturing industry as 32,000. Politicians and scientists are increasingly concerned about greenhouse effects and global warming, with the Europe 2020 project as the EU’s growth strategy for the coming decade. Climate/Energy and the promotion of environmentally-friendly technologies are among the five ambitious objectives to combat global warming. Europe 2020, therefore, provides all of us with a big opportunity to join in. Consequently, we should all combine forces in promoting reman at a political level. Working closely with APRA and CLEPA, FIRM is doing exactly that and we’re now seeing the first results from our lobbying at the EU Commission in Brussels. In the context of the free trade agreement negotiations, includ-
32 l ReMaTecNews
ing the im/export restrictions for remanufactured products around the world, CLEPA is being asked for its support. And we can, indeed, give valuable support – in terms of the common reman definition that has just been established by FIRM, APRA, CLEPA and supported by OES. Other positive examples are the activities of our office in Brussels, the capital of the independent aftermarket. These include the modifications to the BER-regulation with regard to access to technical information or the success of the R2R-campaign (www.r2rc.eu). These are just two of the projects that could only be realised with FIRM’s support and our closeness to Brussels. But we want more: • Job profile for automotive remanufacturers • Automotive reman industry compendium (technology, market) for the finance sector in order to ease credit and finance for reman projects for stakeholders • CO2 credits and tax reductions for automotive remanufacturers • Reman quotes as an integral part of vehicle end-of-life regulations These are lobbying targets for which we need support by media and politicians as well as others who support a cleaner environment for the indirect benefit of our members. But what does FIRM offer in respect of direct benefits for its members? Networking is the key. To put it simply, FIRM is a platform for ten European engine reman associations to exchange experiences, discuss national reman
topics and learn from each other (see “news from the members”). It is a tool for members to generate new ideas and implement new strategies for their national associations and markets. Written information (newsletters, emails, website etc.) is one, albeit somewhat impersonal, way to obtain information and communicate with each other. But let’s not forget the social component: workshops, meetings, exhibitions (ReMaTec). FIRM’s general meeting at EquipAuto in Paris on October 2013 is one such example – an ideal venue to discuss the organisational structure and strategies for FIRM’s upcoming requirements. Anything else? Cooperation, communication and working together with other international operating engine reman associations in the United States, South Africa and New Zealand will further emphasise FIRM’s role as part of an international network. Last but not least, there are the biennial ReMaTec shows in Amsterdam where FIRM, besides APRA (Automotive Parts Reman Association) are RAI’s official partners. Aside from agendas, discussions, lectures and workshops, trade shows worldwide offer significant opportunities for networking – to learn from each other, find new partners, make new business and brain storm. Learn more about FIRM, its network, members and activities at www.FIRM-org.eu and give us your vote – become a member.

International reman conference in Korea Hosted by the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, REMAN 2013 at the KINTEX International Exhibition Center in Seoul in September attracted an impressive 120 participants. With the vast majority of the attendees being Korean, the event illustrated the rising interest in remanufacturing in Korea, yet another Asian country taking a closer look at reman. Attendees listened to a range of presentations by international representatives from the remanufacturing Industry and R&D institutions. Amongst them were Clemens Ortgies, General Manager of BU Drive, Germany; Rex Vandenberg, Owner and CEO of Innovative Electronics, Australia; George Davis, Managing Director of GH Davis USA and Professor Rolf Steinhilper of Bayreuth University, Germany. “Throughout, several speakers from government departments emphasised Korea’s rising ambitions for establishing a strong remanufacturing industry,” Professor Rolf Steinhilper told ReMaTecNews. “Questions from the audience raised the issue of why, despite the official commitment to remanufacturing, there are still relatively few reman activities in Korea. Sup-
posedly, this is due to the fact that the Korean car parque remains comparatively young. When reaching the age of seven years – at the threshold of needing remanufactured parts – many Korean cars are exported to
other Asia-Pacific countries. Even so, Korean officials are clearly determined to promote automotive remanufacturing in their country.”
