Engine remanufacturer The hallmarks of on new course 10 top-class reman 16
APRA and Amsterdam RAI, the organiser of the ReMaTec remanufacturing show, have signed an historic agreement that will launch a new exhibition concept in the US. From the autumn of 2014, APRA’s existing “Big R” shows will be replaced by ReMaTecUSA in a new partnership between the two organisations.
Engine remanufacturer Autocraft has just installed a more than €2.3 million manufacturing cell, incorporating Plasma Transferred Wire Arc (PTWA) technology. PTWA is set to be a step-change in engine remanufacturing in that it allows the recovery of cylinder blocks that could not previously be reclaimed.

EDITOR’S LETTER
ReMaTecNews Volume 13 – Number 5 – October 2013 ReMaTecNews, the only international news magazine and website dedicated to automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing worldwide, is an independent channel for news, views and developments within the remanufacturing industry.
Showcasing the shows This edition of ReMaTecNews devotes space to the remaining reman-oriented exhibitions and events of 2013. With only three months left of the year, it’s fair to say that for those who wish to attend most of them, October, November and December will indeed be a busy time. In Europe. In China. In the US. Across the world. The reason for all this activity obviously reflects the fact that remanufacturing is gaining ground in so many different places, areas and regions. Step by step – and sometimes by big leaps - authorities and consumers alike are realising the benefits of remanufacturing and responding accordingly. That’s good for the environment, boosts employment and promotes our industry, which for too long has suffered from a lack of public recognition. Within this context, the announcement of the partnership between APRA, the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association and Amsterdam RAI (the owners of ReMaTecNews magazine and ReMaTec Exhibitions) concerning a new, joint reman exhibition in the US, is particularly newsworthy. As remanufacturing becomes increasingly international, indeed global in scope, the coming together of the two most important reman exhibitions on each side of the pond will inevitably lead to further knowledge exchange, stronger business partnerships and smoother links between the two sides. The benefits arising from this cannot be disputed. At a time when China, in particular, is coming to the fore as a reman power to be reckoned with, the broader visions of the industry are perhaps more crucial than ever. So are the links between remanufacturers, their suppliers, the researchers and scientists, who deliver solutions and technological advances to the industry and everyone else who serves the industry in important roles. The world of reman is becoming smaller all the time. Step by step. And sometimes by big leaps. Such as now.

APRA and ReMaTec create new reman show:
Big R/ReMaTecUSA 2014 William Schwarck - By The partnership between APRA and Amsterdam RAI gives birth to an industry-leading reman show in the United States US. “Together, over the past 8 years, we have created the premier remanufacturing exhibition in Europe and our combined strengths will now be directed towards the United States, the world’s largest remanufacturing marketplace. I’m confident that ReMaTecUSA will become a vibrant new part of the rapidly growing remanufacturing industry, and we look forward immensely to this new beginning.”
Theo Lingmont, Director International Exhibitions at Amsterdam RAI with Nick Staub, Chairman of APRA: A pioneering agreement. For decades APRA’s Big R reman show in Las Vegas has been at the heart of America’s automotive remanufacturing industry. To create a stronger platform for the industry, APRA is now joining forces with Amsterdam RAI, the organisers of the biennial ReMatec exhibitions in Europe. The result is a new and powerful force in remanufacturing – Big R/ReMaTecUSA. This is the outcome of a pioneering agree-
ment between APRA, the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association in America, and Amsterdam RAI. The two parties will launch a, new and enlarged reman show intended to broaden the event’s appeal and draw in more exhibitors and attendees from across the world. “APRA is delighted to strengthen its global partnership with Amsterdam RAI,” says Nick Staub, the Chairman of APRA in the
Important part of portfolio One of Europe’s largest conference and exhibition organisers, Amsterdam RAI involved in a large number of significant international trade exhibitions in multiple industries. In addition to events at its base in Amsterdam RAI has considerable experience with trade shows world-wide, ie. China, Turkey, Poland, India and United States. The future joint events with APRA in Las Vegas, however, represents the first ReMaTec exhibition outside The Netherlands. “In recent years the ReMaTec shows have become an increasingly important part of Amsterdam RAI’s portfolio and we’re delighted that we’re now able to extend the concept to the US in partnership with APRA and, hopefully, other partners in this important industry,” stated Theo Lingmont, Director of International Exhibitions at Amsterdam RAI. “We are excited about this significant opportunity and are confident we can help moving remanufacturing forward at a crucial time in its history.”
BIG R SHOW 2013

NEWS FROM THE INDUSTRY
Launch in Las Vegas in November 2013 “The official launch of ReMaTecUSA will take place during APRA’s Big R Show this November,” Niels Klarenbeek added. “The new show is set to be a great, new opportunity for international players within automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing to expand their businesses into the North American market. This will be helped significantly by the fact that ReMaTec’s extensive sales network with offices and agents in the Netherlands, United Kingdom, United States, China, Italy and France – will promote the show internationally.”
Centred at the Rio Convention Centre in Las Vegas, the new Big R/ReMaTecUSA will co-locate with the ATRA Powertrain Expo in what will become the largest event by far in the US reman calendar. We expect more trade associations and other organisations to join in as we go along,” said Niels Klarenbeek, Domain Manager, Remanufacturing at Amsterdam RAI. “We and APRA would certainly welcome any players, that can see the benefits from participating in this common effort.”
Educational programme Traditionally the Big R shows offer visitors as well as exhibitors a strong educational programme. This will not only be maintained, says Niels Klarenbeek, but will be enhanced. “Against the backdrop of the automotive industry’s rapidly developing technologies, education and training are crucial for remanufacturers,” he says. “Big R/ReMaTecUSA, therefore, intends to devote considerable effort to meeting the need for training. Led by APRA and its network of partners, a conference on remanufacturing will be organised adjacent to the show floor.”
A green industry to meet at the greens APRA and Amsterdam RAI recognise the importance of networking. Accordingly, a range of social events will allow visitors and exhibitors to get together with fellow reman professionals, suppliers, vehicle manufacturers, distributors and others in the reman supply chain. Moreover, an extensive VIP programme will be aimed at attracting high level buyers. As part of this programme a golf tournament will provide an attractive opportunity for members of the reman community to meet on the greens in a relaxed atmosphere.
Broader responsibilities for ReMaTec team In view of the future international development of the ReMaTec exhibitions announced above, Amsterdam RAI has reorganised and strengthened its ReMaTec team. With effect from 1 September, Eva Barten has been appointed Marketing and Communications Manager for the two ReMaTec shows in Amsterdam and Las Vegas as well as for the ReMaTecNews magazine. From the same date, Sales Manager Ewoud Barink will be responsible for both exhibitions and for advertising sales for ReMaTecNews. As Advertising Sales Manager for the past two years, Eva Barten, who has a Degree in Communications, has become a familiar face among ReMaTec News’ advertisers. From now on her responsibilities will centre on the promotion and marketing of the entire ReMaTec concept. However she points out: “I have hugely enjoyed my time as Advertising Manager for the magazine and have enjoyed dealing with our many loyal advertisers. Fortunately I will continue to be involved with the magazine and will remain in contact with the many friends I’ve made in the industry over the past few years.”
in Amsterdam and the Big R/ReMaTecUSA show in Las Vegas as well as for advertising at ReMaTecNews Ewoud Barink will henceforth focus 100 per cent on the ReMaTec Team, managed by Niels Klarenbeek. Until now Barink has also worked with other international shows under the RAI umbrella but will now devote his efforts exclusively to developing
sales for the entire ReMaTec concept. “Being involved with ReMaTec for the past year and, especially, in the run up to ReMatec2013 in June, has been a rewarding experience,” said Ewoud Barink. “It’s clear that automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing is heading for a bright future and I’m delighted to be part of this and ReMaTec’s role in it.”

Reman engines decline in the US but new opportunities for diesel Demand for remanufactured engines is in decline because improving product quality makes original engines last longer and increasing technological complexity complicates remanufacturing, a new survey by US analysts Frost and Sullivan says. As a result companies specialising in remanufacturing diesel engines are likely to thrive in the coming years. Accordingly, diesel engine revenue will grow significantly between 2012 and 2019 as rising fuel prices and economic pressures drive demand for fuel-efficient remanufactured engines to support the growing share of imported light-vehicle nameplates across North America. The fractured aftermarket is consolidating as many remanufacturers have exited the industry since 2008, the report points out. The increased technological complexity of newer engines challenges small remanufacturers to find qualified technicians and to keep pace with changing product requirements. Remanufacturers must invest in the tools, equipment, and expertise needed to
properly remanufacture modern engines. Auto dealerships in the original equipment service (OES) channel will quickly contribute greater revenue over other stakeholders as newer, more complex engines enter the aftermarket. Extended service warranties keep many fleet vehicles out of the aftermarket. Warehouse distributors and retailers face potential market share loss as small remanufacturers exit the industry. Competition from vehicle salvage companies will increase, the report predicts.
eywell Turbo Technologies and Borg Warner Turbochargers unveiled recent developments within new applications and emphasized their intentions to further strengthen their ties to the independent aftermarket. This will be done by providing education, sharing product information and enabling the aftermarket to benefit from high end diagnostic equipment.
Rosy outlook for diesel tech The trend was reflected in the recent Annual Convention of ADS, the Association of Diesel Specialists, in San Diego CA. On the backdrop of improved fuel efficiency within diesel technology, sales of diesel engines in new vehicles is increasing in all global markets which, in turn, offers opportunities for the diesel aftermarket, attendees heard. New look to technical data manager
Jean-Paul Borsten and Aart Koning Plans to expand the international engine parts and technical information system for engine remanufacturers, known as Enginedesk, have been announced. The move follows the acquisition of the online engine technical information database in June, by two Netherlands-based engine rebuilding specialists. Motorenfabriek De Sutter is based in Zevenhuizen near Rotterdam, while Koning Technisch Bedrijf B.V. is from Meppel.
Motorenfabriek De Sutter director Jean-Paul Borsten, who is also Chairman of the Dutch trade association BOVAG’s reman division, says Enginedesk currently holds technical data, diagrams and detailed specifications on over 30,000 engines. It combines parts information with detailed technical information that engine rebuilders need - such as valve angles, valve seat diameters, piston crown clearance - as well as the
technical diagrams that go with them. Already available online in 24 different languages, Enginedesk designers are currently working on new upgrades for the system, with plans to include parts information direct from suppliers and manufacturers, plus the ability for users to add their own parts price information. A complete workshop management module is also being considered.

Expansion is in the air at Autocraft Drivetrain Solutions
The UK engine remanufacturer Autocraft has just installed a more than £ 2.3 million manufacturing cell, incorporating Plasma Transferred Wire Arc (PTWA) technology at its manufacturing plant in Grantham, Lincolnshire. PTWA is a technology that promises to be a step-change in engine remanufacturing. It allows the recovery of cylinder blocks that could not previously be reclaimed by any other reman process. It’s a process designed specifically to remanufacture the high quality, complex engines built for today’s cars. It’s also a sign that small engine remanufacturers are likely to face an uncertain future, a situation that Autocraft experienced itself less than five years ago. In 2008, Autocraft was a US-owned remanufacturer of high volume low complex engines. Then operating under the ATC Drivetrain name, it supplied engines for the reman programmes for leading OE manufacturers. From a business perspective, with little annual investment to rely on, it was treading water. The possibility of expansion then looked unlikely. There was an on-going reman engine research and development programme in partnership with its main
customer, Ford, but the future seemed to lie in increasing unit prices while at the same time working hard to prevent existing business being lost. Steve Harris and Mike HagueMorgan were part of a new management team charged with turning the business around. Plans were laid. Opportunities were identified. By 2009 there was new business in the pipeline. Then its US owner decided to sell off its remanufacturing businesses. The UK management team stepped up and bought the operation in Grantham 180 km north of London in 2010. The transformation to Autocraft had begun. Days later, Ford sanctioned its commitment to the PTWA project, providing a platform for Autocraft’s renaissance - one that has seen the company radically change its operating profile. Diversification Steve Harris says new reman business - including contracts with Volvo and

JCB - have helped to reduce his company’s dependence on its historical customers. Autocraft has added further products such as pedal box manufacture, while moves to diversify mean that ‘new’ manufactured products have been added to its portfolio. Revenue from these ‘new’ products now represents over 30% of output. Meanwhile a joint venture deal in China is under development with transmission and ECU remanufacturer ATP. The most significant change is the switch to remanufacturing low volume, high complex engines, says Mike Hague-Morgan. “In the past, each part number was high volume low complex engine production. We’ve changed our market to low volume, high complexity. We now service four times as many engines with less volume. Instead of having to build batches of 100 or 50, we now build with a volume of one. Engines are just that much more reliable.” And increasingly, they are more diffi-

cult to remanufacture: “If you look at the latest generation of engines, the wall thickness of the block is not sufficient to either over bore and fit an oversized piston or over bore in order to fit a liner. Historically, those are the only two ways to recover the block,” says managing director Steve Harris. Ford was keen to invest in PTWA technology for many different reasons, but a major consideration was an end to the need to manufacture new blocks for its engine remanufacturing programme. Mike HagueMorgan explains: “In order to support the Ford programme, we needed new engine blocks. They had been breaking into production runs in order to make them for us and because we service 15 years down the line, they either had to run a production process specifically for us or make extra units at the beginning of the manufacturing process.” Expensive strategy A strategy like that is expensive. It involves trying to predict the number required over the timescale while suffering the expense of storing them for all that time - plus the cost of working capital. PTWA makes all this unnecessary. The

thinness of the cylinder walls is overcome because it coats cylinder bores with a thin layer of metal back to a standard condition. The blocks are then honed before being passed into the remanufacturing process. Autocraft can now use original blocks sourced from core supplied through dealership programmes. Moreover, in new vehicles the use of PTWA technology instead of liners in aluminium blocks represents a significant weight

saving for Ford and other OE manufacturers on a similar course. It is also a perfect response to their responsibilities with respect to Euro 6 compliance. Game is changing While every engine remanufacturer will appreciate that engine cylinder blocks are becoming increasingly difficult to reclaim, commercial director Mike Hague-Morgan says that the game is changing for smaller players: “Some of them will continue to say ‘let’s just over bore and fit an oversized piston’. Well, if you want to get 10-15,000 or maybe 20,000 more miles out of it in the future, you can do that. What you will not be able to do is to continue to remanufacture them to a good standard without one of these machines.” Autocraft believes such businesses will have to adapt to the change. They are likely to have to repair more engines rather than to remanufacture them, he says. However, PTWA is not a quick fix that will satisfy Autocraft’s desire to expand. Although Autocraft can include a wide range of other OE manufacturers on its client list, Steve Harris points out that there are some that continue to service the market with new, rather than reman. Still others prefer their own in-house reman programmes.
> to be continued on page 12 ReMaTecNews l 11
The future Autocraft’s plans for the future may include projects outside the reman sector, but Mike Hague-Morgan says the company is committed to its reman roots and its ambitions are clear: “The goal for us is to use technolo-
gies like PTWA to persuade those companies with their own in-house reman facilities to outsource. We can show them our process is genuine reman. It’s green and it’s sustainable. We have the technology. We can deliver the quality. We want them to think about the
opportunities our PTWA facility offers, then ask themselves: ‘why am I doing this in my own factory?’” Answers on a postcard to Autocraft, at Grantham, please.

Melett opens Polish distribution facility UK turbocharger specialist, Melett, has acquired the distribution of turbocharger parts in Poland from its current distributor.
Ian Warhurst, MD and owner of Melett.
The opening of Melett Polska signifies a further extension to Melett’s growth plans and follows the recent opening of Melett’s new sales office in Latin America in June this year, and the opening of Melett North America Inc., last August. The new facility, located in Bydgoszcz, Poland will act as the local distribution centre for customers throughout Poland and will allow Melett to work closer with the Polish market, the company says. Melett has worked closely with CIMAT over the past 6 years to establish the Melett brand throughout Poland. “CIMAT has been producing balancing machines for over 30 years and is well known throughout Europe”, said Ian Warhurst, Managing Director and Owner of Melett Ltd, in the UK. “Since 2007, CIMAT has acted as the Melett distributor in Poland, supplying both machines and Melett turbo repair parts”.
The move is presented as a natural step for both companies. “CIMAT is busy on the balancing machines front and the transfer will allow them to concentrate more on their core business function”, Ian Warhurst added. “The move also puts Melett one step closer to our customers in Poland. This will allow us to gain a much better understanding of the market’s requirements and improve our local stock availability, which in turn will allow us to better serve the market with competitively priced, quality products.” Melett Melett supplies turbocharger repair kits, complete balanced CHRA/Core Assemblies and individual turbo components to the professional turbo repair industry. It supplies turbocharger repair parts to turbo reconditioners in over 100 countries worldwide.

Large US remanufacturer strengthens operations Detroit Diesel upgrades remanufacturing facility in Minnesota and commits to further reman expansion. As part of the Daimler AG family (Daimler Trucks North America), Detroit Reman has steadily been strengthening its position in the remanufacture and manufacture of electronics. In addition to its involvement in heavy-duty equipment, truck, and passenger car markets, more recent product segments include agriculture, transit and rail applications.
Daimler Truck North America Detroit Diesel Remanufacturing LLC, or “Detroit Reman” as it’s better known, has further underlined its commitment to remanufacturing by significantly extending its remanufacturing and manufacturing facility in Hibbing, Minnesota, doubling its existing 30,000 sq. ft. site near the local airport. “The move provides the space necessary to support the electronic manufacturing and remanufacturing activities well into the future,” the company said. The new facility retains 100 existing jobs, and creates the potential for 30 to 50 new jobs within the next 3 to 5 years, Detroit Reman added. At present, the Detroit reman division operates from several sites across America, employing a total of 1,400 people. The company says it hopes to have them all under the same roof in Michigan by January 2015. A member of the Daimler Truck family, the USA’s largest supplier of products for
on- and off-highway power systems, Detroit Reman remanufactures a complete line of electronic and mechatronic components under various brands. Its current product portfolio includes new and remanufactured engine controllers, transmission controllers, vehicle controllers, turbo actuators, EGR actuators, variable pressure output devices, intake throttle controllers, instrument clusters and audio amplifiers. “Detroit Reman is more than a remanufacturer of heavy iron,” said Stefan Kurschner, President of Detroit Reman until August, when he was succeeded in the top job by Sanjiv Khurana. “Through the growth and evolution of the Hibbing plant over the past six years, and because of the creativity and passion of its employees, Detroit Reman has become an expert in the manufacture and remanufacture of high-quality electronics products,” Stefan Kurschner said.
Headquartered in Portland, Oregon, DTNA employs a workforce of 20,000 and supplies products for heavyand medium-duty commercial vehicles for long-haul transport, construction and related services. A conversation with Alan Smart, founder of the UK’s ATP Group and Remanufacturer of the Year 2013. Over the course of more than 40 years in remanufacturing you’re bound to lose some and win some. In the case of Alan Smart the latter is clearly the case. And that includes the Remanufacturer of the Year 2013 award, the accolade bestowed on the 69-year-old founder/owner of the ATP Group in the UK by ReMaTecNews earlier this summer. Here are some extracts from a conversation we had with Alan Smart following his win at the ReMaTec exhibition in Amsterdam. What has the Remanufacturer of the Year meant to you and to ATP? “For me personally it has been one of the crowning experiences of my career something I’m immensely proud of because it acknowledges what we have achieved over all these years. Even more importantly is the way it can be seen as a recognition of the people who have made it possible. We have some of the smartest engineers and technicians in the world and they are as much entitled to the award as I am. Without them none of this would have come about.” One major factor to which Alan Smart ascribes his relations with the company’s OEM clients is ATP’s collaboration with its customers and, indeed, the entire workforce’s ability to match customer requirements. “OEMs are moving so fast that we need to hold on by the skin of our teeth to meet their demands,” Alan Smart says. “They expect us to possess all the know-how

stay at the helm of his life’s creation forever. Nevertheless, one wouldn’t bet against him playing a key role in ATP’s further development for the foreseeable future. “At ATP we have an official retirement age of 65, which under certain circumstances can be extended to 70. I’ve always said that nobody should work beyond 70, but I have to say that I’m very happy doing something that I enjoy and I’m not sure I can give it up from one day to the next,” he laughs. “Yes, I want to begin to step away – albeit slowly. The problem with me, like with so many others, is that we tend to think that nobody else can do what we can do.” Whether working seven days a week, as he does now, or less, Alan Smart’s legacy will continue to influence ATP’s future path. And that future involves more focus on dealing with highly complex electronics that are increasingly being adopted by the motor industry, the ongoing development of the company’s testing equipment and the continuing heavy investment in R&D. “The growth of electronics will keep accelerating and may take ATP into other areas, which are outside what we’re doing now,” he says. “After quality, the ability to undertake extensive testing is crucial – which is why we develop our own testing equipment. For me there’s no doubt that remanufacturing will be forced to pay more attention to testing or it will not survive.”
Looking East China, too, plays a significant role in Alan Smart’s thinking. Having operated a subsidiary in China since 2000 and thus having built up very substantial experience in the growing Chinese market for remanufactured products, ATP will open a new, bigger and more advanced site in one of the industry parks allocated by the Chinese government in 2014. The exact location will be determined before the end of the year, but Smart expects the move to represent yet another historic milestone in his company’s development. “I see China as being at the forefront of our future. The potential there is phenomenal, but we’re not fooling ourselves as it is also a very difficult market. I’m happy to say, however, that since we received ReMaTecNews Remanufacturer of the Year award, we have found it easier to talk to the authorities in China. In fact, several of the officials that we’re dealing with there have shown themselves to be very impressed with the award– it’s clearly something they’ve noticed.” Alan Smart’s Remanufacturer of the Year Award attracted a good deal of attention in the UK. The local Member of Parliament sent a flattering letter to congratulate him with the honour.
Alan Smart: “We have some of the smartest engineers and technicians in the world and they are as much entitled to the award as I am.”

Friesen returns to Friesen After eight years, the founding family takes charge of the German starter and alternator business, Friesen, once again. The company is now set on a course of expansion. When Manfred Friesen, founder and owner of the well-respected German starter and alternator remanufacturer that bore his name, sold the business in 1995 to the American Bana Corporation, it seemed the end

of the family’s relationship with the reman industry. Those that thought so, however, were proved wrong. Last year, the Friesen family, Manfred, and his 40-year-old son, Marco-Dirk, returned to the company having bought out the previous owner, Klarius, which, in turn, had bought it from Affinia some years earlier. For the past twelve months, the old/new owners have put in a substantial effort to reinvigorate the Friesen name and its position in the European market. Welcome return “Immediately after our takeover, we could see considerable interest from existing as well as new customers,” MarcoDirk Friesen told ReMaTecNews. “We got a clear feeling that our return to the industry was welcomed by many.” The eight months since the take over have indeed been a busy time for Friesen with Manfred acting as Chairman and Marco-Dirk
running the day-to-day business as Managing Director. The production facilities in Oranienburg outside Berlin have been expanded partly to handle current production volumes but also to prepare for further expansion down the line. As a former site in Backnang near Stuttgart was closed by Klarius in 2010, all operations will be centred on the factory in Oranienburg. So far this year, a number of departments have been restructured, including accounts, IT and HR. In fact, the company’s entire IT landscape has been reorganised, a major task in itself. The main objective of this restructuring was to put the business on a more stable foundation. Having implemented such changes, Marco-Dirk Friesen’s eyes are now focused on Friesen’s future, in the short as well the longer-term. “We’ll now take a closer look at improving quality and efficiency and plan for the launch of new products,” says Marco-Dirk, who joined Friesen backed by an Economics degree and twelve years of

corporate experience from PriceWaterhouseCoopers. Next year, we expect to see some launches, perhaps within the field of heavyduty. For me, there are clearly very substantial opportunities in remanufacturing – and we see the business as a remanufacturing company, not just a starter and alternator remanufacturer. As of now, Friesen AG, employs a workforce of just below 100 people, has sales of approximately € 10 million and remanufactures 150,000 parts per annum. Quinton Hazell While under the ownership of Klarius, Friesen was marketed under the Quinton Hazell brand although the Friesen name was maintained as a distinct entity. That, clearly, comes in handy not that the family is devoted to reinvigorating its name as a strong player in starter/alternator remanufacturing and more. Within this context the company’s close relations with large customers such as Hennig, Matthies and buying groups like ATR will play an important part. The same is the case with customers in Italy, to take an example. In the summer Friesen set up its own warehouse in Italy in order to be able to supply customers with a faster, cheaper and broader service. It may be more than forty years since the name Friesen first arrived in reman markets. As things are going, the likelihood is that it will still be around in another 40 years.

“Sustainability through Remanufacturing” MERA/Golisano Institute, 2 October 2013, Troy, Michigan, USA
Nabil Nasr
More than 140 leaders in remanufacturing and sustainability from the automotive and commercial vehicle aftermarket are expected to gather in Troy, Michigan on 2 October for the “Advancing Sustainability through Remanufacturing” conference. Co-hosted by the Motor & Equipment Remanufacturers Association (MERA) and Director Nabil Nasr at the Golisano Institute for Sustainability, the conference will focus on linking remanufacturing with the organisation’s overall sustainability strategy and raising awareness about the contributions of the remanufacturing industry. “We are expecting a sell-out,” says John Chalifoux, President and COO, MERA. “The strength of this year’s agenda and attendee list makes the MERA-Golisano Remanufacturing and Sustainability Conference a not-to-be missed event.” Richard Freeland, Vice-President and President, Engine Business, Cummins Inc., and Robert Wagman, President and CEO, LKQ Corporation, will deliver the keynote addresses. For the full programme and other details, visit www.mera.org.
The 21st of the biennial Equip Auto exhibitions Equip Auto, 16-20 October 2013, Paris, France The 21st Equip Auto exhibition, France’s international aftermarket event, expects to see increases in visitor numbers as well as exhibitors for the 16-20 October show. An international exhibition of after-sales equipment and services for all vehicles, EQUIP AUTO is one of the industry’s key B2B events. It brings together manufacturers, distributors and repairers from the automotive market seeking new products, services and partners. With 1,800 exhibitors from 50 countries (of which 75% are non-French) and 125,000 visitors from over 130 countries, the organisers expect to improve significantly on previous years’ results. “Conscious of the changing needs of exhibitors and visitors, and aware of how markets are evolving, EQUIP AUTO has set three top goals for this year,” the organisers say. “These are supported by three main principles: more business through an enriched, value-added offer, higher visitor numbers and tempting sales rates. There will also be more events and opportunities for networking.” For more information, visit www.equipauto.com
“As good as new” requires a high level of cleanliness parts2clean, 22-24 October 2013, Stuttgart, Germany An accurately remanufactured aggregate or component usually offers the same performance as its new equivalent. However, producing “as good as new” parts depends a great deal on cleanliness. Even more since technical cleanliness has become a decisive quality criteria – not only in the automotive industry. This is the explanation why the annual Parts2Clean exhibition in Germany continues to attract the interest of remanufacturers. The exhibition showcases a broad range of cleaning tools, machinery and processes, many of which are crucial to the reman industry. “Within the context of sustainability and green production, remanufacturing has become one of the keys for saving energy and raw materials, as well as for reducing pollution and waste,” the organisers point out. “These advantages result in increased demand for remanufactured aggregates. At the same time, technical cleanliness is becoming more and more important for the procurement of remanufactured parts in the automotive, commercial and heavy duty vehicle industry.” As the leading international trade fair for industrial parts and surface cleaning, Parts2Clean will feature the world’s most comprehensive programme in this field. The exhibition portfolio comprises systems and processes for degreasing, cleaning, deburring and pre-treatment of parts and a range of related procedures. These include parts baskets and workpiece carriers, handling and process automation, cleanroom technology, job-shop cleaning, quality assurance as well as test methods and analysis procedures and corrosion protection. Market news The Chinese new “Three Rs Regulation” may change the aftersales market structure.A new regulation relating to the refund, repair and replacement of automotive products comes into force on 1 October 2013. It is estimated that the regulation will increase the after-sales repair business volume of 4S shops sharply. Since 4S shop repair standards will directly affect the reputation of manufacturers and their product image, more manufacturers are expected to contribute to the 4S shop after-sales services, or may even control some aspects of the after-sales services. Thereafter, manufacturers will be more stringent and fastidious in the sourcing of auto parts and accessories. High potential There is high potential for auto consumption in China’s third and fourth tier cities. According to recent surveys, the willingness to buy a car is increasing significantly in China’s third and fourth tier cities. Consumers in these cities, who plan to buy a car in the next 12 months, contribute to 68% of China’s total, and 56% of these potential auto buyers are first-time car owners. Taking advantage of continued urbanization and improved living standards, the purchasing power of consumers in third and fourth tier cities is further strengthened, and the demand for auto consumption has shifted from the Central and Western regions to China’s third and fourth tier cities.

TRANSMISSION WORLD
Challenges and solutions to transmission remanufacturing Transmission remanufacturing is one of the reman industry’s challenging segments. Increasing complexity, rapid technology development and parts proliferation all combine to make transmission issues a key subject for the future. How can transmission remanufacturers best face up to the challenges? Axel Blaschke, Manager Business Development Transmission Application at Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket, has some ideas.
Axel Blaschke of Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket: “There is a need for transmission remanufacturers to work together.” Would transmission remanufacturers benefit from closer operation at the organisational level? From a number of different points of view, this is a question that deserves closer consideration. In the US, for instance, ATRA, the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association, is a substantial organisation with 2,000 members, an annual trade show and very active membership services. In Europe, the structure is significantly different and largely consists of private operators – of which some, such as Automatic Choice in the Netherlands, and Sussex
Autoparts in the UK, provide a wide range of seminars and other training activities. Valuable as these are, do they meet the full requirements? Is there a need for more? Axel Blaschke believes so. To him, the time for a more concerted effort by transmission remanufacturers on the European level may have come. “I think it is time to initiate a new group in Europe to collectively find solutions to the challenging market environment for spare parts suppliers, for remanufacturers and transmission specialists,” Axel Blaschke told ReMaTecNews. “This group should cover all European passenger car and commercial vehicle transmission designs – including manual, automated manual and double-clutch transmissions. It should speak with one voice for the European transmission aftermarket.” Blaschke explains: “Looking at other regions of the world you’ll find that many companies are members of associations that support the transmission aftermarket by helping them to take up the challenge on a regional level. However, in Europe there is currently no association specifically representing the interests of the transmission aftermarket. Of course, some local organisations exist, but usually for regional challenges and specific transmission designs – mainly automatic transmissions. And there are automotive remanufacturing associations active in Europe as well. As a driving force in the ongoing development of Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket’s transmission business, Axel Blaschke delivered an in-depth presentation entitled “Trans-Mission-Impossible?” at the ReMaTec show in Amsterdam in June. Centered on the needs of remanufacturers with regard to
automotive and heavy duty transmission, the presentation set out a number of challenges and the need for finding solutions to such challenges. “The title “Trans-Mission-Impossible?” was meant to describe some of the challenges posed by new transmission designs and their potential impact on the aftermarket. And let me tell you, did that open a can of worms!,”
“In Europe there is currently no association specifically representing the interests of the transmission aftermarket.” Blaschke says. “As I looked closely at each transmission design, I did not find any consistent results. They vary by manufacturer, even within individual manufacturers’ transmission families. Moreover, the most common transmission design in Europe, the manual transmission, still has some unsolved issues for transmission remanufacturers.” What are the most important challenges? “The most important issues are sourc-
Axel Blaschke Axel Blaschke started his professional career in 1987 at Philips AG in Kassel, Germany, as a trainee in Communication Electronics before taking a degree in the subject in 1991. After some time at Philips, he studied economics securing a university degree in 1998. Subsequently, Axel Blaschke moved to Chicago to work for ZF Industries, Inc. as a Regional Sales Manager, responsible for passenger car transmissions and components in USA, Canada, and Mexico. For personal reasons, he returned to Germany and, in 2005 was appointed to the post of Manager Business Development Transmission Application at Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket. In this position, he is globally responsible for automotive and heavy duty transmission components.”

TRANSMISSION WORLD ing spare parts for all the transmissions in the aftermarket and getting access to repair and maintenance information – including the necessary technical specifications, accessing training on new transmissions and finding special tools as well as the right equipment for end-of-line testing. Some players in the market already provide these types of solutions. “Don’t get me wrong, not all manu-
facturers are the same. Some already offer comprehensive know-how and tools for the aftermarket and others don’t supply a single spare part to repair transmissions or any parts for repair at all. The majority of manufacturers are positioned somewhere in between. And of course, many solutions are available from international aftermarket companies around the globe. Finding solutions for each
and every pressing subject is no longer possible for a single transmission remanufacturer. “This is why I feel a more uniform approach by the players in the transmission industry could benefit us all. The complexity in our industry is bound to get greater, not less. We will all need to deal with these problems.”
Transmission remanufacturers interested in meeting up to discuss closer co-operation or the formation of a reman transmission body, are invited to contact Axel Blaschke at axel.blaschke@schaeffler.com
A choice for the future? That was a question rebuilders from 22 countries asked themselves at the 15th Choice Tech seminar on Saturday 15th June in Amsterdam, organised by the Dutch company Automatic Choice Europe during the ReMaTec reman exhibition. During the day, guest speaker Wayne Colonna of ATSG, introduced his audience to hybrid technology – one of the upcoming challenges for transmission remanufacturers. Alongside Wayne Colonna, Bob Warnke of Sonnax, briefed participants on developments within valve bodies and valve body diagnostics. Once again, Warnke’s presentation emphasized the importance of understanding the elec-
tronic part of the automatic transmission when identifying causes and solutions. During the show Automatic Choice Europe noticed a positive atmosphere with regards to the automatic transmission market among rebuilders and their suppliers. This feeling was substantiated by the increase of demands from “New Borns” to the market with increasing numbers of garages and related businesses recognising the growth of automatic transmissions. At the same time, however, many also realise that automatic transmissions remain a completely different ball game compared to the traditional manual gearboxes.

APRA Europe
NEWS APRA-Europe creates new symposium concept Every two years over the past decade APRA Europe has organised symposiums for its members. Throughout, the intention has been to provide participants with knowledge transfer, networking and interesting visits to companies operating within the remanufacturing industry. Although most of these events have proved successful, we were often unable to fully meet our own ambitions. On the backdrop of APRA’s strategy of providing measurable benefits for all APRA members and attracting a wider audience to each event, we have decided to re-design the symposium concept. As a result, APRA Europe intends to organise a series of modular events, where
participants can subscribe to those modules that correspond to their specific interests. This means that, for instance, it will be possible for one section of the audience to look into technology issues while a second group discusses marketing or communication topics. In the evening the different groups will then meet up for common events or special events designed for technicians or commercial people or the recent “COREpa cabana” dinner in Amsterdam for core dealers. Moreover, modular subscription will enable individuals to reduce their participation fee by selecting those modules that correspond to their individual interests while, at the same time, offering special seminars with strong appeal to limited groups of experts. other words, we’re introducing an entirely new format. To be attractive to members from different geographical regions, venues must be easy to reach as well as attractive. For this there are numerous well-suited locations in Europe – which make European events unique. Additional events of high quality and easy to reach near the event dates will make participation even more attractive. Imagine how attractive it would be to participate at a business event and take a few days off for leisure! Therefore, don’t forget to include the APRA-Symposium 2014 in your holiday planning for next year. The dates and other details will be issued nearer the time. We are looking forward to providing APRA members and their families with an unique reman event in 2014

“We have come to realize that these are great tools we can use to connect more consistently with our members,” APRA-president Bill Gager said. “With a billion users on Facebook and YouTube each month and more people using their phones to get on the Internet, it’s clear that social media is the place to communicate. Looking outside the Box Since most people working with remanufactured automotive parts specialise in one or several product groups, quite often they find it difficult to locate new applications. Nevertheless, many of us spend valuable time searching for references in order to complete their, to be a top supplier and establish the benchmark for our market segment. But is chasing such targets always the best idea? Why not diversify? Why not enter new markets or products? Why not transfer our knowledge of remanufactured automotive parts to the remanufacture of wind turbines or aerospace equipment or gas turbines or powertrain components for ships?
12:20
Remanufacturers should not limit themselves. Rather, we should look outside the box – and do it regularly. And when doing so, it may be helpful to make use of external consultants with in-depth knowledge of remanufacturing. They may often be able to create synergies and identify new business opportunities. This is why APRA Europe is now providing a specific service to our APRA members - the “Remanufacturing Consultant Service” which was launched during the ReMaTecShow 2013 in Amsterdam. This extranet database application provides information about specialist remanufacturing consultants operating within different segments.
(Please call APRA-Europe Office for more information: +49 2541 80068-18) Here at APRA we’re well aware that automotive – and heavy duty - are not the only remanufacturing sectors that are experiencing growth. Therefore, as the largest global remanufacturing association, we have to answer this question: “Do we remain exclusively focused on automotive?” The Board of APRA-Europe is currently discussing our vision and mission. The outcome of the Board’s deliberations will be presented in our Green Pages in the forthcoming issues of ReMaTecNews. We’ll be pleased to hear your opinions.

Quality in professional engine remanufacturing What is quality? How is quality defined? What do we - and the end-user - understand by quality? First of all, we must look at the remanufactured engine as the final product offering the same function, performance, reliability and emission levels as before the damage or malfunction. The same applies to the remanufacturing of engine components like cylinder heads, blocks, crankshafts, con rods, short and long blocks etc. But how do we ensure that the finished, remanufactured engine leads is a genuinely high-quality engine? What steps need to be taken to guarantee this? What distinguishes a professional remanufac-

Only when engine remanufacturers work in accordance with such standards and guidelines, will they produce genuine “quality”. Only then, do we truly distinguish ourselves from the backyard repair workshops and “spray and pray” garages that offer low budget repair solutions and not much else.

FER in specialist reman support role UK specialists have been invited to help China develop a quality standard for the remanufacture of automotive parts for its domestic market. “The Chinese see this as a vital part of the development of their remanufacturing parts industry and we were pleased when they asked the Federation of Engine Remanufacturers to get involved,” says FER president, Alan Johnston. Representatives from the FER were given the chance to swap experiences and ideas with their Chinese counterparts as part of a visit by a Chinese delegation to specialist automotive remanufacturers in the West Midlands. The delegation included officials from government bodies such as the Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Finance and the National Development and Reform Committee. Changing attitudes After listening to an overview of the UK reman situation presented by FER, a spokesman for the Chinese delegation said: “The attitude to remanufacturing in China is changing and our Government is working hard to encourage growth and improve quality and standards. In China there are now more than 200 automotive parts
remanufacturing specialist companies. The measure of the growth of the engine reman sector in China can be seen from the expansion of our country’s Engine Components Remanufacturing Association. It is now more than 100 members strong.” UK reman specialists are increasingly developing strong links with Chinese remanufacturers, but Alan Johnston adds that Chinese remanufacturers are stealing a march on
their UK counterparts thanks to the strength support provided by their government. “It’s clear that the Chinese Government has already accepted the benefits that a strong remanufacturing industry can deliver for its economy – savings in resources, more jobs for unskilled and semi-skilled workers for example. UK politicians seem reluctant to embrace those benefits,” he says.
