Amsterdam RAI, the organisers of the ReMaTec reman exhibitions, are launching the concept Amsterdam Remanufacturing Week. To run concurrently with the ReMaTec exhibition in 2015, Amsterdam Remanufacturing week will comprise the World Remanufacturing Summit and the iCor academic conference for remanufacturing specialists.
China and India are not the only Asian countries with a deep interest in automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing. In a private-public partnership, Singapore is currently establishing an Advanced Remanufacturing and Technology Centre that is destined to become a world-leading laboratory for reman technology.
Across the globe remanufacturers are adjusting to the demands of an age in which reman is moving to the centre of the public debate. In line with this development, ReMaTecNews is starting a series of articles setting out how the world’s leading reman companies face up to the challenge of the future. We begin with Meritor.
“The remanufacturing sector is unnecessarily constrained by legislation and regulations…”

Trust but verify Recent images from Chinese cities have reminded the world of China’s pressing need to face up to its pollution problem. In Beijing, Shanghai and elsewhere, the country’s rapid industrial development over the past twenty years has created health threats on a massive scale. The Chinese authorities are all too aware of this. The government in Beijing is investigating measures to combat these rising problems – and its strong support for automobile remanufacturing is one indication. There is now little doubt that within the near future, China will rank among the world’s top remanufacturing nations. While the Beijing’s support for remanufacturing will inevitably lead to the emergence of some new, key players in the international remanufacturing industry, this development is not without its risks. Early in 2014, the legendary British carmaker, Aston Martin, was forced to recall 17,590 sports cars that it had built since 2007. The reason? Aston Martin had discovered that the accelerator pedal arm in its cars was made of counterfeit plastic subject to breakage. The product proved to have been supplied by a Tier 3 supplier, which, in turn, had bought it from a Chinese business believing – or claiming to believe – it to be a genuine DuPont product bearing the DuPont brand name. In other words, in order to shave off a small percentage of the price of the product the Chinese supplier put the lives of Aston Martin’s customers at risk. Now, Aston Martin is planning to move the production of accelerator pedal arms back to the UK. Counterfeit parts are, of course, far from unknown in automotive or commercial vehicle aftermarkets and reputable suppliers and manufacturers have fought long battles against the perpetrators. At the same time, remanufacturers represent a genuinely valuable alternative to dubious producers of “new and cheap” components – which, as the Aston Martin episode illustrates all to clearly – carry considerable risks for those who fall for the temptation to use them. The smog plaguing Chinese cities is one explanation why China’s leaders are serious in their determination to promote “the circular economy” of which reman is such an important part. At the other end of the spectrum, the Aston Martin episode serves as a timely reminder that not everything coming out of China’s automotive industry is what it seems. As President Reagan used to say: “Trust but verify.”

Amsterdam, the world’s remanufacturing capital in June 2015
Professor Rolf Steinhilper, University of Bayreuth, Germany:
Rising demand for technical expertise and research into remanufacturing is now adding a significant dimension to the biennial ReMaTec exhibitions in The Netherlands. With effect from the next ReMaTec edition in 2015, show organiser Amsterdam RAI is adding two significant events to the agenda for the show week, June 13-17-2015. To be known under the name Amsterdam International Remanufacturing Week the event will comprise the World Reman Summit 2015 and the International Conference on Remanufacturing (ICoR2015) alongside ReMaTec2015.
focusing. In addition, both conferences will market their events under the Amsterdam International Remanufacturing Week banner. Consequently, the event can be expected to bring together reman executives, trade associations, scientists, media representatives and politicians, Amsterdam RAI says.
“The addition of the University of Strathclyde in Scotland and the Swedish Linköping University, which organises ICoR2015 as well as Bayreuth University in Germany, the co-founder of the World Reman Summits, will boost the attraction of ReMaTec2015 very considerably,” says Exhibition Manager, Niels Klarenbeek, Amsterdam RAI. “As a result exhibitors and visitors can look forward to the broadest display of reman expertise anywhere in the world. We’re proud, indeed, that these prestigious academic events will take place here.”
Amsterdam International Remanufacturing Week 2015 (13-17 June 2015)
New audiences The two conferences can be expected to bring new audiences to the ReMaTec exhibition floor, the organisers believe. This is due in part to the fact that both ICoR2015 and WRS2015 focus on perspectives beyond the automotive, industrial and heavy duty segments on which ReMaTec is currently

“As demand for remanufacturing rises across the world, the need for accordingly between science-based research and the reman industry’s practitioners increases correspondingly. The two previous World Reman Summits in Bayreuth and Shanghai both illustrated this trend. I have no doubt that the third summit in Rochester, New York, in September this year, will be yet another example. I’m delighted that Amsterdam will be the host city for the next European Summit in June 2015 and I’m confident that we can look forward to yet another successful event”.

“In the past remanufacturing stakeholders have often had a piecemeal attitude so this immense coming together of our various communities from academia through to industry in ReMaTec 2015 is incredible. It is important to me to be there to see this new beginning. One of the greatest advantages of this event for me as a remanufacture academic is the huge potential to foster greater links with industry so that we can work together to address real remanufacturing issues”. ■

Springfield Remanufacturing: Turning “old” to gold The most recent offshoot in the wide-ranging portfolio of Springfield Remanufacturing Company, the renowned Missouri remanufacturer, is Global Recovery Corp. Barely one year old, this new subsidiary of SRC Holdings was launched in the spring of 2013 and its 14 associates, as the company calls its employees, are on course towards achieving revenues of 10 million dollars for the current year . Which again illustrates how remanufacturing offers opportunities beyond the original purpose of taking old cores and turning them into as-good-as-new automotive and heavy duty components.
of surplus products etc. not just in the US but also in Latin-America and elsewhere. In fact, the current business plan embraces partners across the world. There’s clearly gold to be found in scrapyards. “Scrap Metals is a new cylinder of business and has been just as exciting as expected,” Neil Chambers, Global Recovery’s Managing Director told ReMaTecNews. “Due to the scrap volume that our sister companies generate during the remanufacturing process, we have become the centralised location to sort and separate these metals. By consolidating them, we are able to up our returns by selling straight to the smelters. We are looking to grow this cylinder rapidly in 2014.”
Global Recovery covers three “cylinders” of business, all of which relate to SRC’s core activities. These are Surplus Sales, Core Procurement and Scrap Metals and teams from the company are currently busy visiting scrap dealers and providers
Partnerships with OEMs The Surplus Sales cylinder consists of material from various OEMS in the “on and off-road” markets. “We have five buyers that travel the world looking to source specific cores that are requested by our

In 2013, GRC provided enough core for one customer to raise its sales line by $5.2 million.” Chambers says with some pride. “We offer various models to the OEM and work to hit their goals as well as being profitable for ourselves. Exporting this material outside of the US is the main outlet for this material and we’re continuously looking for customers outside North America.” ■

UK remanufacturer taken over by American electrical vehicle specialist Transhock Ltd, a UK remanufacturer and distributor of vehicle parts and accessories in the West Midlands in the UK, is coming under American ownership, the company has announced. The buyer is Green Automotive Company in Riverside, California, which specialises in zero and low emission technologies and provides a comprehensive after sales programme, maximising the life time value of clean transport solutions. “For Green Automotive this acquisition presents an opportunity to strengthen its position in the growing market for recycling vehicle parts and, in particular, to extend and develop its range of remanufactured parts for electric vehicles,” says Ian Hobday, CEO of Green Automotive Company. “As the use of EVs continues to grow, so the demand for remanufacturing parts will grow with it, and we’ll be well placed to exploit this
developing trend. Recycling and remanufacturing car and truck parts is a lucrative business that also makes environmental sense. By reusing existing parts instead of making new ones, we not only reduce operating costs, but more importantly reduce greenhouse gases and our environmental footprint.” Transhock Ltd, a 28-year-old privately owned company, is managed by partners David Davies and Derek Neale, who will remain with the business. The business, which has approximately 2,500 customers, employs a workforce of 50. “We’re excited about joining the GAC group, and feel ready to make a good contribution to the group’s overall strategy,” said David Davies. “Our business can operate easily on both sides of the “pond”, so we look forward to initiating our parts remanufacturing efforts, especially for EVs in America too.”
Green Automotive Company comprises three main subsidiaries, Liberty Electric Cars Ltd, Newport Coachworks Inc and GoinGreen Ltd. Of these Liberty Electric Cars Ltd designs and develops EV technologies for use in its own converted vehicles and for sale to OEMs for incorporation into their production. GoinGreen Ltd was founded in 2002 with the mission to minimise the effects of climate change by encouraging carbon-neutral motoring. ■

Singapore goes for reman big time
ARTC is set to become a world class reman laboratory By William Schwarck In just a few years remanufacturing has become an emerging factor in Asia. On the back of the ever increasing need to preserve resources and combat pollution, cities and countries across Asia are waking up to the economic opportunities and social benefits arising from remanufacturing. China is one example. India another. Poised to become the next in line is Singapore, the small island state that has established itself as one of Asia’s outstanding success stories. With little heavy industry and no ambitions to create polluting factories, Singapore is committed to its image as “Asia’s garden state” and the way to achieve this is to focus on high-tech industries. In less than a generation this policy has turned this city-state of 5 million people into one of Asia’s financial and high-tech centres. One of the industries that will form part of Singapore’s development is remanufacturing. In fact, the Singaporean government and its engineering elite are focused on establishing
Singapore as the technological centre for remanufacturing in Asia. Proof of this commitment can be found in the industrial zone of Jurong, a 20-minute drive north-west of the city centre where a number of the world’s famous companies have set up their Asian headquarters or, at the very least, significant regional centres. Here at Cleantech Park, builders are working towards the completion of “Clean Tech 2”, the second and next stage of Singapore’s Advanced Remanufacturing and Technology Centre, ARTC.
Dr. David Low
When finished later in the year, ARTC will occupy a total of 7,200 sq.m. with ultra-modern laboratories and workshops and state-of-the-art machines and offices. In short “everything that’s needed for manufacturing and remanufacturing objectives”. Key centre of remanufacturing excellence ARTC, therefore, is set to become a key centre of remanufacturing excellence, not just in Asia but across the world. In part, this is virtually ensured by the list of founding companies in this privatepublic sector venture. From private industry the founding, Tier 1, and Tier 2 members cover a stellar line-up of world-class companies like IHI, Siemens, Rolls Royce, 3M, ABB, Carl Zeiss, and TRUMPF, followed by Tier 3 members specifically reserved for local SMEs, with Singapore’s government in partnership with the renowned Nanyang Technological University representing the public sector. In organisational terms, ARTC comes under the state-run Agency for Science, Technology and Research, A*STAR, the huge 18 research institutes and consortia whose 5000 staff specialise in science, engineering and biomedicine.

At the same time, he is well aware that there is much to be done before ARTC has fully achieved the stated goal of “transforming best-in-class competencies, capabilities and innovations into high value added customer solutions for remanufacturing and manufacturing”. While the challenges are substantial, the potential benefits are even greater. “Rising costs, global competition and environmental concerns are some of the key
drivers of the manufacturing industry,” he says. “Manufacturing companies are turning to remanufacturing solutions to meet these challenges and to help them stay ahead of market competition whilst contributing to environmental sustainability.” New building During its first two years, ARTC has resided in Clean Tech 1 building across from its future home in Clean Tech 2. Once Clean Tech 2 opens later
Dr. David Low Dr. David Low, CEO of ARTC, was Chief of Manufacturing Technology at Rolls-Royce Singapore, where he set up and led the Manufacturing Technology department and delivered these capabilities into the RollsRoyce businesses globally. In 2012, he won the prestigious Sir Henry Royce Team Award for Engineering Excellence. Prior to joining Rolls-Royce in 2007, David worked in the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech), a unit of A*STAR, where his last role was the Group Manager for Machining Technology, which focused on the R&D of machining and laser materials processing technologies. As a researcher, David Low has conducted industrial research for numerous companies and published over 50 journal, book and patent publications in the field of laser materials processing. He is a member of the Materials Science and Engineering Departmental Consultative Committee at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and a member of the Editorial Board for the international journal, Lasers in Engineering. More recently, he participated as a member of the Foresight Expert Panel for National Research Foundation (NRF) in Advanced Materials and Manufacturing.

in August this year, ARTC stands prepared to occupy its intended place in the development of the Singaporean economy. Located in an open, verdant science park, the buildings aptly illustrate Singapore’s green credentials. “Singapore has a long history of maintenance, repair or overhaul within important industries such as aerospace, marine and oil and gas. We believe that this experience provides us with the right credentials for delivering remanufacturing expertise for the benefit of manufacturing companies - and the environment,” David Low says, adding: “Singapore’s government commitment to maintain a healthy manufacturing sector contributing to between 20% and 25% of Singapore GDP made us believe that there are big opportunities for Singapore in repairs and remanufacturing, especially as Singapore needs to rely on sustainability. This is important to us.” As a major maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) hub in Asia, Singapore has seen substantial growth in recent years and the government, as well as the companies and people behind ARTC, are confident that the centre is poised for rapid development. David Low puts it like this:
“We’re still in the start-up phase. The ambition, however, is to be established as a vibrant centre with 50 industrial partners to whom we deliver true value. Moreover, we aim to set a trend for Singapore as a key player in remanufacturing where the original products may be manufactured elsewhere and then given a second - or a third or fourth - life here.” World class partners By “50 industrial partners” David Low is referring to the structure upon which ARTC is built. Founding, Tier 1, and Tier 2 members such as IHI, Siemens, Rolls Royce, 3M, ABB, Carl Zeiss, and TRUMPF, followed by Tier 3 members specifically reserved for local SMEs, presently a strong 20 foothold, all have signed a MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with ARTC with a view to looking into the development of technologies for bridging technological gaps in remanufacturing for aerospace, automotive, oil and gas, marine and engineering industries. With worldclass engineering companies such as these in the mix, there seems little doubt that ARTC is well positioned to achieve its goals - to create a world renowned Centre of Excellence for remanufacturing technologies. n

When remanufacturing meets the world of high-tech
On an average day engineers at the centre in Bangalore conduct videoconferences with Meritor colleagues around the world. By William Schwarck Bangalore, India, One Thursday afternoon, a group of young engineers, male and female, are sitting in front of a video screen discussing technical issues with colleagues. Nothing unusual in that. Less common, perhaps, is the fact that the participants are located in three continents and five geographical locations. In India, in the United Kingdom and in the US, at times also in Mexico and China
of its technological development. It is certainly here, in India’s sixth largest city and one of the country’s foremost knowledge centres that Meritor is demonstrating its commitment to hightech remanufacturing and its willingness to invest accordingly.
Altogether Meritor Bangalore employs 85 engineers who focus on product development and an exclusive team of 10 focuses on discovering why remanufacturable components fail, analyse the strength and weakness of materials, simulate the actual condition and examine how to
Taking reman to higher levels Increasingly, the big players are asserting their influence in automo-
Unusual, too, is the way this morning’s conference, the ones before that and those that will follow, are dedicated to remanufacturing and how to move it forward. Divided by thousands of miles but united in their search for common solutions to complex technical problems, the young engineers in front of the video screen are employees of Meritor’s Global Technology Centre in Bangalore in the Indian state of Karnataka. This is where the global US supplier of heavy duty axle, braking, driveline and suspension systems established one of its key technology development departments 13 years ago - and this, in many respects, is where Meritor begins its journey into the next stage
tive and heavy duty remanufacturing. As political, environmental, technological and social factors continue to impact on the industry, this trend is set to continue. Accordingly, how “the big boys” act, will drive many of the developments in reman. In a new series ReMaTecNews will take a closer look at how some of the world’s foremost remanufacturers face up to present and future challenges. We begin with Meritor, the global supplier of drivetrain, braking and other aftermarket components and solutions.

maximise the remanufacturing of safety critical products and carry out reverse engineering. In short, “how we as remanufacturers can deliver the best possible products,” explains Nagaraja Gargeshwari, the 43 year-old head of Meritor’s Technical Centre in Bangalore. Concept creation All this is a long way from the remanufacturing of the past. Rather, it exemplifies the increasingly high-tech - and international approach - of some of the reman industry’s main players. From the Bangalore Technical Centre, engineers supply concept creation for all Meritor remanufacturing activities across the world, covering all stages of product design, development and validation to some an extent by running projects through various processes. Due to remanufacturing’s place in Meritor’s global strategy, this places the Bangalore facility at the heart of the company’s planning. General Manager, Remanufacturing Worldwide, Doug Wolma, expresses it like this: “Remanufacturing is an essential part of Meritor’s business. Remanufactured components are a smart price-point alternative for fleets of all sizes and vehicles of all ages given the current market economic conditions. The second, third and fourth owners often have different priorities than the original owner, and the focus on the initial acquisition cost is often heightened as the vehicle ages and changes owners. The increased sale of used trucks has brought a step up in the number of remanufactured components being purchased to outfit many of those same used or older vehicles.” A view of the Bangalore Technical Centre’s facilities leave little doubt as to Meritor’s commitment. In front of their computer screens, in the teardown room, metallurgical lab, or test lab some 10 trained engineers are busy analysing design failures, creating/modifying technical drawings and exchanging experiences and solutions with colleagues in Europe and North America. This 10 member Aftermarket engineering team forms part of the 85 engineers in Bangalore supporting Meritor’s worldwide engineering needs. They have been through a combined 300 man months of on-the-job training at other Meritor technical centres in Europe and the US and many come from one of Bangalore’s universities that each year sends thousands of new graduates to work in the city’s high-tech industries. Meritor takes on at least five full time engineering graduates and 10 trainees - one way of maintaining strong links to the city’s academic and technical environment.
Engineering Manager Giriprasad Kedam, Ian Buxcey, Head of European Remanufacturing, and Engineering Director Nagaraja Gargeshwari discuss details with one of Meritor’s engineers at the centre in Bangalore. “Having a regular supply of graduates is very important to us,” says Nagaraja Gargeshwari, Director of Engineering since 2007 and the executive in overall charge of the facility. “Remanufacturing is growing in importance across the Asia-Pacific region and in order to keep up with the technological advances we must have a constant supply of qualified engineers.” Nagaraja Gargeshwari himself exemplifies the new generation of (re)manufacturing leaders emerging in Asian countries. Originally schooled in computer and peripherals design, he progressed into automotive design, development and validation before joining Meritor where he rose to Engineering Director and head of the Bangalore operation. Now, supported by Giriprasad Kedam, Engineering Manager, he spends 50 percent
Engineering Director Nagaraja Gargeshwari
of his working hours on strategic issues and the remaining 50 per cent dealing with people, systems and processes.
“We have an in-depth understanding of all the requirements and challenges of high-class remanufacturing” Between them they have spent several years building up the Bangalore centre so that today, there is an unmistakable feeling here that “no-one in the world can do it better.” Nagaraja himself, however, prefers a softer version. “We certainly have a very good skills-set where we have an in-depth understanding of all the requirements and challenges of highclass remanufacturing,” he says. “What we have learned over the past years is how important accurate testing and highly developed engineering skills are to developing sophisticated products. And the more experience you build up for one product, the more you can help with other products. The scope is huge.”

Engineering Manager Giriprasad Kedam (left) and Director of Engineering Nagaraja Gargeshwari have spearheaded Meritor Bangalore’s transformaiton into a Centre of Excellence Constantly in touch with Meritor’s other tech centres, the Bangalore team operates at the heart of an extensive international network. An average of 10 video/Tele conferences per day link Bangalore with other tech centres in USA (CVS products); Cwmbran in the UK (Brakes); Cameri, Italy (Axle and Brake); Shanghai in China; Monterrey in Mexico (Application Engineering) and Osasco, Brazil (Axle) and no urgent issue or solution needs to accommodate the time change from continent to continent. “We talk to China in the morning, with Europe in the afternoon and with the US in the evening,” Nagaraja says. “Moreover, most of our engineers benefit from being seconded to other parts of the world within the first two years of their employment. As a result, many are familiar with locations and colleagues in other countries. That helps enormously when exchanging experiences, and finding solutions across the entire company. This is where engineering skills make a real difference.” On the other side of the world On the opposite side of the world, in Plainfield just outside Indianapolis in the state of Indiana, USA, some of the effects of the work undertaken in Bangalore 20,000 kilometers away are clearly visible. When the employees in Meritor’s advanced remanufacturing plant clock in for work, they will, perhaps without realising it, draw on the designs, methods and processes developed by their colleagues in Bangalore.
Here in Plainfield, more or less in the centre of the United States’ enormous road network, Meritor has, over the past years, invested more than 10 million dollars in building one of the reman industry’s most modern facilities. Occupying 275,000 feet of floor space and employing a workforce of more than 300, Plainfield is the largest and most modern of Meritor’s seven reman production facilities, possibly one of the most modern anywhere in the world. Every year, thousands of drive axles, drivelines, manual transmissions, automatic transmissions, trailer
axles, brake shoes, steering gears, wedge brakes, hydraulic brakes, and air systems roll off the Plainfield lines. One example is brake shoes, a relatively recent addition to the product portfolio. Used shoes are cleaned, shot-blasted and processed through a five-stage wash and pre-treatment process before Meritor’s innovative PlatinumShield™ coating is applied. Developed by Meritor’s own brake engineering team to resist micro-abrasion caused by the movement of the brake lining against the shoe table during normal use, the method eliminates rust-jacking, which occurs when rust forms on bare shoe metal under the lining, causing it to lift and crack. “The real benefit to customers is lower overall maintenance costs,” explains Product Director Tim Bauer. “The elimination of premature brake jobs resulting from cracked linings will make fleets using these shoes more competitive.” Long history Meritor’s reman history goes back a long time – to 1982 when it started remanufacturing drive axles at its Florence, Kentucky national parts distribution centre. Later, the plant relocated to Plainfield which has since become the group’s main remanufacturing location. In late 2007, Meritor acquired Mascot Truck Parts, a Canadian remanufacturer of all-makes differentials, manual transmissions, drivelines and steering gears. In 2008, the company acquired TruckTechnic, Liege, Belgium, which remanufactures disc brake calipers, differentials and air system valves.

Global reman footprint Meritor’s global remanufacturing operations include sites in four countries producing a portfolio of drivetrain and wheel-end components. More than 40,000 tons of cores are processed at Meritor remanufacturing facilities and the company recycles 90 per cent of all waste from its operations. Meritor remanufactures more than 18,000 gearing units per year and over 20,000 brakes shoes each day.

Remanufacturer revives a chapter of automotive history
The old factory halls in Vrchlabi are once again home to automotive production. The town of Vrchlabi in the north of the Czech Republic has a rich past. Located at the crossroads of many central events in Europe’s history, this attractive, rural town in Central Europe’s Bohemia region even has a place in Europe’s car making industry.
manufacturing - thanks to an American remanufacturing company, FSEG, Flight Systems Electronic Group.
Two years ago, FSEG Europe was looking to meet a new need for a purpose-built facility for electronic and mechanical reman processes.
More than a century ago, the once thriving Czech automobile industry was born here, the home of the renowned “Ig.Th. Petera und Sohne” factory which, for decades, represented some of the foremost suppliers to European carmakers. Later, as is often the case with pioneers, the name and its plant in Vrchlabi fell victim to the everincreasing industrial competition, disappearing into the local history books. At least that was the case until late last year, when the old plant in the town centre was once more humming to the rhythm of automotive
Marc Baines: “We take pride in having brought a beautiful old building back to life.”

Headquartered in Lewisberry, Pennsylvania, USA, and anticipating considerable expansion for its European business, the company found a solution in Vrchlabi. Managing Director of FSEG Europe, Marc Baines, explains: “We approached the City of Vrchlabi to discuss renovating an older, vacant, manufacturing facility. We had to meet with the Historic Preservation Department and the Mayor to detail and agree what our building plans included. Once we had agreement, we began our renovations and discovered we were moving into a century old building that was the birthplace of the Czech automobile industry.” Having undergone close to two years of restoration and upgrades - in itself a large-scale challenge - the old Petera factory now stands as testimony to the care and dedication involved in reviving the old building. The 3500 sq. m2 facility now displays a blend of high tech equipment and products and processes, all within the historic walls and the locally sourced wooden floors. This mixture of new and old retains many subtle details from the past while bringing the building into the 21st century. “We’re proud of introducing Vrchlabi to the growing reman auto industry and doing it in such a historic, yet modern, facility,” Production Manager Eric Beerhorst says. “Our current reman products include HD brake calipers, engine controller units, turbo actuators, and new build electronics. 2014 will also see the launch of our turbo and diesel remanufacturing processes while we also continue the development of other processes and products for the reman industry.”

Ig. Th. Petera und Sohne A young Sudeten German, Ignaz Theodor Petera, who was a successful carriage manufacturer in Vrchlabi, opened his chassis factory in 1908, naming it “Ig. Th. Petera und Sohne.” In doing so, he was introducing Czechoslovakia to the new and fast growing industry of automobile manufacturing. With their wooden chassis, attention to detail and fine made-toorder craftsmanship, the Petera products were highly regarded and sought after by the local Bohemian royalty as well as by expanding European car manufacturers. In fact, the Petera custom-built chassis were supplied to well over 50 different manufacturers worldwide, including notable names such as
Praga, Chrysler, Plymouth, Ford, Mercedes, Fiat, Opel, Skoda, Studebaker, De Soto, Tesla, Nash, and Packard. During the war years, the Petera facilities and workers continued to produce vehicles, even though they were in lower demand and focused on other products such as the famous “Grunau Baby” gliders for the Luftwaffe, trucks and buses for government and private applications and even components for the feared V2 Rocket. Now, 100 years later, after Petera and Sohne have long been forgotten, its factory is once again alive and vibrant - a whole factory remanufactured by a remanufacturer. n

Reman up the UK’s political agenda The value of remanufacturing to society gets a considerable boost in a new report prepared by a group of British parliamentarians. Named “Sweating Our Assets’ - ReMade In Britain” the report makes a resounding recommendation that the UK must build a strong business sector based on remanufacturing and reuse. The gains from doing so are potentially huge, the authors, a group of conservative MPs say in report to the Conservative/Liberal government. Such gains include: • £5 billion of additional profits per annum for manufacturers • Over 300,000 new jobs in the remanufacturing industry • Improving the UK’s balance of payments by £20 billion by 2020 as a large percentage of finite resources are imported • £3 billion in savings from avoiding landfill costs and retaining resource value. Total life value “If the UK is going to succeed in benefiting from these potential gains there needs to be a significant policy focus on how to extract total life value from resources,” the report points out. “The 21st century global race will not be won by those whose economic model was cast in the 19th century. Instead, it is the resource aware, efficiency focused and productivity driven economies that will set the new standard by which competitiveness will be judged. The UK has a long way to go to match our most efficient competitors - Japan, Germany and China”, the authors say. Commenting on the proposals, Laura Sandys, Chair of the Conservative 2020’s productivity and efficiency group, said:
“Normally productivity means focusing on labour productivity, but this report rebalances the debate from labour productivity to resource productivity. In addition it calls on support for a new growing business sector called ‘ReMade in Britain’ - thereby ensuring that resources are regarded as assets with a second and third life.” Much emphasis is placed in the report on the statement that the UK is not extracting the full value from the resources that it currently uses. The potential gains from innovative methods of reuse, remanufacture and demand reduction are not recognised in the UK as an opportunity and Britain has lagged behind European and other nations in this respect. “Business sectors such as reprocessing and remanufacturing are less developed than the equivalent markets in Japan and Germany and a
much greater effort is needed if we’re going to be competitive in the 21st century and catch up with the world leaders in maximising the value and life of our resources,” the authors say. Reman - an important commercial opportunity In particular, the group behind the report calls on the government to recognise the reuse and remanufacturing sectors as important commercial opportunities. The remanufacturing sector is being unnecessarily constrained by existing legislation and regulations, the report says, and points to numerous examples of world leading businesses, including Caterpillar and Rolls Royce, that are already “extremely innovative remanufacturers. But the sector needs more support in terms of sharing best practice and identifying opportunities.” n
Laura Sandys, UK MP: “Resources should be regarded as assets with a second and third life.”
Motorists keep their cars longer In marked contrast to the past, motorists keep their cars longer. Today 80 per cent of consumers are comfortable with running cars more than 10 years old - or even “until the car dies.” That’s the finding in the US auto web-site AutoMD.com in its 2014 Vehicle Mileage Survey. Although conducted among 4,398 US car owners the figures are believed to be relevant to European markets in that European consumers tend to keep their vehicles longer than Americans. Despite the recent economic upturn in the US, the vast
number of respondents say that the old two to three year ownership model is dead. “What was at first a reaction to a bad economy, has now become a new reality - with the majority holding onto cars up to and past the 100k mark. The number of consumers saying that ten years is the appropriate time to own a car has not shifted, even as the economy has improved,” said Brian Hafer, VP of Marketing for AutoMD.com. “This longer ownership cycle is increasing the likelihood that consumers be researching repair and repair pricing info online. And - in good news for repair shops - not only does this survey show
that these car owners are more likely to choose an independent repair shop for their service needs, but that more and more consumers are searching for repair shops online.” n

American lawmakers set new course for remanufacturing off official fleets
US Congress to debate extending use of reman products to federal fleets By Mike Pennington A positive boon for the remanufacturing of vehicle components in North America is in the offing when newly-proposed federal legislation passes the normal legislative hurdles. Gary Peters, a member of the House of Representatives from Michigan, and James Lankford, a colleague from Oklahoma, recently introduced the Federal Vehicle Repair Cost Savings Act of 2014 (H.R. 4056) in what could be a landmark in the development of remanufacturing. The bill encourages civilian federal fleet managers to use remanufactured parts when maintaining the fleet, noting the environmental, economic and product performance benefits associated with their usage. According to a 2013 U.S. Government Accoun-tability Office report, there are approximately 588,000 vehicles in the civilian
federal fleet in the United States. H.R. 4056 encourages the use of remanufactured parts in maintaining the fleet, realizing the economic cost savings while preserving quality and performance. Industry experts contacted by ReMaTecNews expressed optimism for the bill’s passage and its short- and long-term positive implications. Lower costs Nabil Nasr, Rochester Institute of Technology
“Beyond the short term direct beneficiaries of the remanufacturers will be the much more farreaching impact by increasing the acceptance of
reman components in other sectors,” Dr. Nabil Nasr, Executive Director, Rochester Institute of Technology in New York told ReMaTecNews. The bill may take some years to work its way through the US Congress and the final result cannot be taken for granted. Nevertheless, in a number of states there is strong support for increased use of remanufactured products on local and federal level. Last year, for instance the State Legislature in Massachusetts voted for stronger measures in favour of “Right to Repair” and, therefore, remanufacturing, and other states are likely to follow. Despite the general benefits of H.R. 4056 some observers consider its chances of being enacted as little more than 50 per cent. If, eventually, it fails, it will not be due to lack of support from the remanufacturing industry. Across the board industry leaders express strong

support for the bill, support that can be expected to become even more vocal as the bill goes through Congress.
Dave Olsen, TransAxel
Dave Olsen, CEO of TransAxle and chairman of Motor & Equipment Remanufacturers Association, MERA’s Sales & Marketing Council, said: The bill will lower the cost of the federal fleet of vehicles, drive U.S. employment in the local areas and is a step in the right direction from a sustainability perspective.”
Jack Vollbrecht Remy International
Remy International senior vice president and MERA vice chairman Jack Vollbrecht said: “Without sacrificing quality, safety and reliability, they (fleet managers) can cut costs significantly and throw in an environment win as well.”
Europe to follow? By Dan Ware Could similar legislation ever come to fruition in Europe, where there is arguably a different attitude to remanufactured parts. Peter Bartel, Chairman of APRA (Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association) Europe, and a Senior Expert with Bosch Automotive Aftermarket, believes the European Parliament will eventually support the use of remanufactured parts – but there is work to be done. “In the US a remanufactured product is already accepted by the Government. There seems to be an approach in Europe that a remanufactured product is the equivalent of re-used, which is the wrong approach,” Peter Bartel says. “We are lobbying the EU to define a remanufactured part as something equal to
“It’s a win-win-win for Washington: budget savings with enhancements rather than sacrifices,” Vollbrecht added. “Besides the quality and savings aspects, remanufacturing does not get enough credit for its huge contributions to a cleaner environment. For any customer, downtime is not an option, and fleet managers know they can trust remanufactured parts.”
Nikhil Varty WABCO
Nikhil Varty, president Americas, V.P. Mergers & Acquisitions, WABCO, hoped that “the federal and local governmentowned fleets considering remanufactured products will demand the same quality that they have expected from the manufacturers of new components that they have used in the past. We hope that the strong commitment of the U.S. government will serve as an example to other countries and regions to foster the support of remanufactured parts as well commended,” WABCO’s Varty. To a person, remanufacturing officials expressed that besides the quality and savings aspects (of reman), remanufacturing does not get enough credit for its huge contributions to a cleaner
environment. “In an age of budget austerity and environmental consciousness, it is only appropriate for the U.S. government to prioritize the use of remanufactured parts,” one official said.
John Chalifoux MERA
John Chalifoux, president and COO of MERA, noted that “remanufacturing is sustainable manufacturing, and with this legislation, our country is well positioned to take full advantage of the quality, value and sustainability benefits associated with remanufactured goods. The benefits of remanufacturing are not limited by geography, so we imagine such legislation would be well received in Europe as well.”
Doug Wolma Meritor
Doug Wolma, General Manager, Remanufacturing, Meritor, reiterated the value proposition of remanufactured components: “Higher quality and lower
new, with the quality the best you can get. The remanufactured product has a smaller environmental impact and can be available at an acceptable price level to the end user.” Peter Bartel adds that if the EU was persuaded to introduce a directive concerning remanufactured parts it would automatically be passed down to member countries. Some progress has already been made following APRA lobbying. “Over the past two years we have had several public sponsored research projects looking at the advantages and prospects of remanufacturing, with money coming from the EU as well as national governments. The projects were run internationally, with Germany and Scotland among the research locations. Universities as well as small and medium companies were involved. “When the results of this research are on the table I think the EU will act,” said Peter Bartel. Peter Bartel APRA-Europe

costs than rebuilt components, and they fill a distinct market niche with older vehicles operated by the second or third owners seeking the lowest costs to remain competitive.”
Mark Kothe APRA-USA
Wise advice came from Mark Kothe, COO of Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association, APRA USA: “H.R. 4056 would be a definite win for remanufactured products. Everyone should write to their Congressman today and request that they support HR 4056 legislation.”
Steve Handschuh MEMA
Showing the legislation’s impact on jobs and the economy, Steve Handschuh, president and CEO, Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association, cited a 2012 report from the U.S. International Trade Commission: “The United States is the world’s largest producer, consumer and exporter of remanufactured goods. This legislation will help our county to reduce the federal deficit and support the more than 180,000 hard working men and women in the U.S. remanufacturing industry.” n
WAIglobal Europe expands WAIglobal Europe is expanding its central European warehouse in Bleiswijk, Netherlands. The investment creates more space to facilitate a quality testing area and the ever increasing Value Added Logistics such as customer specific packaging & printing, the company says. WAIglobal’s warehouse now extends to well over 6500 M2, featuring the company’s range of auto electrical products including starters & alternators, components, ignition modules, ignition coils, wiper motors and engine management products. In 20111 WAIglobal took a 33 per cent interest in the UK remanufacturer of Rotating Electrics, Sovereign in Bognor Regis, Dorset. UK Remanufacturing Profile on the rise When Wendy Williamson departs from her role as aftermarket development manager at the UK’s Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders in April, she takes with her a firm belief in the future of remanufacturing. As she prepares for her forthcoming role as chief executive of the UK’s Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation in July, she told ReMaTecNews that remanufacturing is already making significant contributions to employment in UK manufacturing. Coupled with its impact in reducing CO2 emissions, it is making a positive contribution to the economy. At the same time it is “offering end consumers an economical and safe way of keeping their cars on the road,” Williamson adds. She leaves SMMT at a time when the organisation is working closely with the European Association of Automotive Suppliers (CLEPA) on a European level to promote the remanufacturing sector.
Four key areas are high on their joint agendas: • • • •
Establishing consumer safety standards, Environment sustainability, Establishing the size and scope of the industry Core management.
“I am also looking forward to continuing my involvement with the remanufacturing sector when I move to the IAAF and to continuing to work closely with the SMMT on industry-wide issues,” she says. ReMaTec Show Her new role puts her back among the parts suppliers and distributors, where it seems likely that she will regard the biennial ReMaTec show in Amsterdam as an important place to do business: “This is the main show for the remanufacturing sector, which was well supported by UK companies last year and, as with any show, is a valuable place to network and meet new and potential suppliers and customers,” she said. n

New powertrain systems will drive US heavy duty reman market By William Schwarck Overhanging most strategic deliberations within the heavy duty/commercial vehicles industry has been the effects of regulatory initiatives by local, national and international politicians. This has been a fact of life for years - and will remain so for the foreseeable future. In fact, most indications are that environmental, safety and (other) politically inspired considerations will be a huge influence in the worldwide transport sector for years to come. For remanufacturers, an important part of the heavy duty industry, the ramifications of any regulatory change, of course, are important, sometimes even crucial. That’s the case in US markets and the situation is comparable in European markets, too.
This is why a new analysis from Frost and Sullivan, the global market research consultancy, on class 6-8 powertrain systems contains a relevant message to trucking firms, fleet managers and logistics companies everywhere. In its simplest version, the analysis predicts that the arrival of advanced powertrain systems, which comply with new emissions regulations will drive revenue for the North American remanufactured replacement components market over the next five to seven years. Environmentally friendly image While this will intensify competition from suppliers of new replacement parts and, therefore, affect unit shipments for some products, the environmentally friendly image of remanufactured engines, transmissions, clutches and turbochargers will support ongoing demand among major truck fleet operators.
This is well worth taking note of, especially since this market, which in 2013 was worth $3.19 billion, is estimated to reach $3.52 billion in 2019 - in North America alone. “Increased sophistication in the functionality of heavy-duty engines and variable geometry turbochargers will raise the unit prices of remanufactured components,” said Frost and Sullivan automotive and transportation research analyst, Anuj Monga. “The enhanced reliability and availability of remanufactured components means that these products will continue to thrive in the face of stiff competition from new, nonoriginal replacement parts.” Scarcity of skilled labour The fly in the ointment in the report, Strategic Analysis of the North American Class 6-8 Remanufactured Powertrain Components Aftermarket, lies in the perennial core issue. The report,
Heavy duty world
ReMaTecNews | 31
rightly, points out how a lack of cores will lead to the use of newer parts in component assemblies, thereby escalating final costs. Moreover, scarcity of skilled labour is another restraint on independent remanufacturers, who are otherwise not involved in the design and development process. “Unlike many independent remanufacturers that find it tough to gain momentum due to core availability issues, original equipment manufacturers can leverage their installed base and stand a better chance in the remanufacturing market.” Frost & Sullivan believes partnerships with OEMs will be vital for remanufacturers of enhanced powertrain components not to only access key proprietary information, but also to capitalise on the installed base of different OEMs. Partnering with OEMs “Truck manufacturers are also interested in widening their participation in the remanufacturing industry, hence providing added opportunities for remanufacturers to partner with OEMs, keep pace with technological change, and offer differentiated products,” Anuj Monga says. “The remanufactured powertrain components market in particular will see higher activity from truck
manufacturers looking to vertically integrate into component remanufacturing.” Despite the generally encouraging outlook for these types of remanufactured components, unit shipments of remanufactured engines, transmissions, and clutches may decline because of improving original equipment quality and increasing competition from new replacement parts. By contrast, sales of remanufactured
turbochargers will rise by about 2.1 percent annually, Frost & Sullivan believes. As someone once said: Predictions are always difficult, especially about the future. This is certainly the case with remanufacturing. Nevertheless, the analysis appears to be a sound starting point for HD remanufacturers looking for guidance going forward. At the very least it provides a considerable amount of food for thought. n

APRA: a non-profit association What are the advantages of membership of non-profit associations? What do members expect from their membership? The answer to these questions is “measurable service” - in other words, the value obtained in return for the membership fee. The problem starts with defining “value” and deciding how to measure return on the investment in membership. Are we looking for short-term, mid-term or long-term ROI? Does the value lie in good connections in the rapidly developing remanufacturing industry - or are we satisfied with a nice certificate on the office wall? Short-term benefits are easy to measure. Mid or long-term benefits are more difficult to define and, indeed, communicate. A profit-orientated association may sell you a diploma claiming that you’re an expert in remanufacturing or a parts dismantling or core sorting specialist. This would not ensure lasting success for the recipient – but
it would be easy to sell! A profit orientated remanufacturing association would focus on making money rather than helping its members. By contrast, APRA is a non-profit association. Its mission is to assist the further development of the remanufacturing industry, offer networking opportunities to members and contribute to discussion about strategic issues relevant to remanufacturing. We’re here for our members and for the industry in general. Common definition One illustrative example from the past year is our very successful involvement in the preparation of a common definition for remanufactured products in Europe. There are others – as there will be over the coming years. Besides APRA the associations involved in efforts such as these are ACEA, APRA, CLEPA and FIRM. This is important because partnerships are essential if we are to lobby successfully vis-àvis local, national and European politicians. Only
by working together, will we be able to place remanufacturing on the table during upcoming EU free-trade negotiations. Never before have so many reman-related research projects been sponsored by European governments or by the European Commission as is the case today. It is crucial that APRA is involved and actively supports them. The benefits of these activities for the entire remanufacturing industry are evident. Yet they are still hard to evaluate with any degree of precision. It is, however, good to know that as a non-profit organisation, APRA is in there, protecting its members’ interests.
Peter Bartel, Chairman APRA Europe
HD remanufacturing - the other hidden giant? Automotive Remanufacturing is an important industry, which we used to call “the hidden giant“. True, every year we remanufacture more than 20 million components for cars and vans. Consequently, we’re inclined think that we are the main, if not the only, remanufacturers involved in endeavours that preserve vital resources and offer consumers very considerable savings. My recent research, however, indicates that we also tend to forget that the heavy duty segment as well as off-road and industrial vehicles, is an equally important part of remanufacturing. Granted, the number of such vehicles are substantially lower than is the case in automotive. However, it must be remembered that the size and and value of their components are much higher. When
calculating the total remanufacturing potential of the HD segment, it did not come as any surprise to find another “hidden giant”. I will soon publish figures to support this claim. Other industries And this is not all. If you believe that these “two hidden giants” are the main or even only large players in remanufacturing you would be wrong. In a recent and very comprehensive survey, the US Trade Department established that Automotive, Heavy Duty and Off-road Vehicles represent only 33 % of the total remanufacturing industry. The other 67% is accounted for by IT, machinery, aviation, tyres, medical equipment etc. I believe that here in Europe we have or will soon
have a similar situation. Which leads me to the conclusion: Between them automotive and HD reman is a big and important industry. Together with the other remanufacturing sectors we are even bigger and even more important. We are all “Hidden Giants”! fernand.weiland@t-online.de

FIRM - a unique opportunity Some years ago, FIRM’s office relocated from the Rhineland in Germany to Brussels, the seat of the European Commisssion and the center of political environmentally related decisions. This is one of FIRM’s best ever strategic decisions! During the subsequent discussions about access to vehicle repair and maintenance information (RMI) between aftermarket organisations with car manufacturers and their OES organisations, it was agreed that independent stakeholders should have access to RMI on the same conditions as OES stakeholders.
the time has come to assess whether the existing legislation has achieved its goal.
surface wear parameters of cylinder liners and much more. While part of OE-engine repair manuals at the time this was not included in the discussion concerning access to RMI.
However, the definition and depth was also part of the discussions. As a first step it was agreed to give access to “all necessary information needed to repair a car” - which was fine for the majority of the independent workshops.
Nevertheless, due to the activities of FIRM a so-called “use case” was integrated in the final EU-regulation (No 715/2007), including all engine reman related RMI needed for our industry.
Yet, in their daily work engine remanufacturers face specific requirements – namely the need to access to specific RMI info for particularly sophisticated work. Such information includes minimum cylinder head height, crankshaft hardness, oversize dimensions for cylinders,
Review This regulation also specified that after a certain time the Commission should review the system of unrestricted access to RMI. Now that a sufficient number of Euro 5 and Euro 6 light passenger and commercial vehicles has arrived in the market,
Once again, FIRM comes into the play. As a recognized aftermarket stakeholder, we’re now being asked to provide our experiences to the Commission. Now it is up to you to share your daily experiences with our office in Brussels. Now, as engine remanufacturers, you have a unique opportunity to provide details of cases where you have not had access to engine reman related RMI or where the access cost to RMI exceeded that of OES stakeholders. This is a unique chance for you all. If you ask what FIRM can do for you - here is the answer: FIRM is your voice in Brussels - make use of it.

Swedish engine remanufacturers meet up with Turkish colleagues 24 members of Sweden’s Engine Remanufacturers Association, Mo-Re, recently went on a group tour to Istanbul, Turkey, to visit Turkish suppliers and to network with local colleagues. The tour included visits to two Federal Mogul factories, the first manufacturing a wide range of pistons and the second cylinder liners and piston rings. ”Both factories were rather impressive, very modern and clean,” explained Mo-Re secretary Erik Olsson. ”At the second factory we saw their latest investment, a new machine for honing cylinder liners for the new Volvo Euro 6 engines. What makes this machine unique is that the honing mandrel is electric, rather than hydraulic, resulting in quicker turnaround and a straighter cross-hatch pattern.”
The tour also included a visit to one of Istanbul’s 25 engine rebuilders, a shop with 20 employees and a mix of new and old machinery with one employee for each machine. Business hours are from 7:30 am to 6:30 pm and operators earn approx 330€. The group also gained an insight into local pricing for reconditioning. For a Scania DSC 9, for instance, the price in Turkey is equivalent to 4,500 € for a complete engine with all wear parts replaced, the diesel pump reconditioned and the injectors and even engine disassembled and reassembled. Yet another plant visit was to the valve factory, Supsan, a corporate member of FIRM, which in addition to valves produces push rods. Supsan also has a sales company for bearings, camshafts, cylinder heads sold under the “Supsan Engine Parts” label. The
valve factory has 450 employees working three shifts, six days a week. Among their customers are Volvo and Eaton in the US.
The Swedish engine remanufacturers enjoyed a rewarding trip to Istanbul.

Eaton enhances Flex | Reman Transmissions Power management company, Eaton, has made several enhancements to its line-up of Flex Reman transmissions. Among the improvements to the Flex product line is changing the part numbers to a model-based part number. This change eliminates the need to cross reference part numbers with model numbers making it easier to find the correct part number. In addition, a new pricing
structure has been introduced for Flex products with logistic centre, direct ship and truck-down orders all priced the same, the company says. Availability and delivery changes have been made as well. All Flex units are now eligible to ship the same day or next day for truck down situations, and increased inventories of Flex units have been added to Eaton’s 14 US logistic centres resulting in shorter lead times. The changes increase the Flex transmission coverage from 75% to 82% of market demand and now cover 50 standard reman items. http://www.eaton.com

New European reman center takes form A recent survey by the Product-Life-Institute in Geneva, Switzerland revealed that courses on remanufacturing are offered by less than a handful of universities in Europe. That may remain the case for some time. Nevertheless the general level of academic remanufacturing expertise in Europe is bound to rise considerably when the prestigious German Fraunhofer Institute opens its new Remanufacturing R&D-Center next year. Construction has been underway immediately adjacent to Bayreuth University’s Campus in Bavaria since last year and the building with its ultramodern research facilities will be occupied by Professor Rolf Steinhilper and his Deputy Dr.-Ing Stefan Freiberger and their team at the university in February 2015.
The new reman centre in Bayreuth takes shape With 8 million euros invested and space for 60 engineers, the center will cover 3000 m²
and comprise a number of remanufacturing labs, passenger car and truck garages as well as areas for disassembly, cleaning, testing, CAN-diagnosis and machining. Other areas will be reserved for assembly, service-engineering, reverse engineering, optical geometry measurement and resource efficiency. There will also be a 1000 m² demonstration hall. “We see a growing new generation of students and young engineers, who are keen on learning more about remanufacturing - both because of its ecologic benefits and because remanufacturing is a booming industry with many new opportunities for their later career in a changing world,” explained Dr. Freiberger.
Professor Rolf Steinhilper (middle) and his team looks forward to taking posession of the new reman centre in February 2015
“The new building will offer remanufacturing companies state of the art know-how concerning process, production and logistics-technology for efficient remanufacturing. In this way, it will contribute further to Bayreuth University’s strong position in this field.” n
