Challenges for the industry With the – for many unexpected – Brexit vote in the United Kingdom, a time of uncertainty has commenced for UK-based remanufacturers as well as those companies doing business there. Only time will tell what effects this move will have on the industry. In general though, things are looking positive for remanufacturing. Consolidation remains an important topic with companies striving to remain ahead in today’s competitive market. On page 10 you can read what industry experts see as the reasons and challenges. In their recently published research, Frost & Sullivan are expecting global demand for reman to grow substantially in years to come. Whilst outlining a number of – again – challenges, such as education and local restrictions, they forecast light-duty remanufacturing to be a $50-billion business by 2022. But will the industry reach its full potential or are we still struggling with image problems and lack of understanding of the concept or remanufacturing? Who hasn’t experienced a conversation with someone from outside the industry where eyes start glazing over when the topic turns to reman? Denise Rondini argues that perhaps we all need to do our bit to further our industry as a whole. And who could argue with that? Niels Klarenbeek Manager ReMaTec Events & Publications

The automotive aftermarket reacts to Brexit vote By Denise Rondini On 23 June 2016, British citizens voted to withdraw from the European Union. The full ramifications of this decision are not known at this time, but the automotive aftermarket has been offering some initial reactions. On its website the European Association of Automotive Suppliers, a group of more than 100 suppliers of automotive parts, systems and modules and more than 20 national trade associations and European sector associations, said, “This move will have deep consequences on the automotive industry in Europe in general and in the United Kingdom in particular.” Auto sales Benzinga, a financial media outlet that provides content on various markets, published an article on its website that quoted analyst Dave Leiker as saying, “The greatest fundamental risk is the impact in the UK and Eurozone – confidence, employment and income are the drivers of auto sales.” He pointed out that 90 percent of the vehicles sold in the UK are imported mostly from other countries in the EU. In addition, three-quarters of the passenger cars built in the UK are exported, according to the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), an association of German manufacturers of cars, trailers, bodies, buses and automotive parts and accessories. More than half of those cars go to customers in Europe. A new future In reacting to the news, Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Trades, an association that supports and promotes the interests of the UK automotive industry at home and abroad, said, “The British public has chosen a new future out of Europe. Government must now maintain economic stability and secure a deal with the EU which safeguards UK automotive interests. This includes securing tariff-free access to European and other global markets, ensuring we can recruit talent from the EU and the rest of the world and making the UK the most competitive place in Europe for automotive investment.” Wendy Williamson, Chief Executive of IAAF, the Independent Automotive Aftermarket

Federation, a federation that is also the secretarial organisation representing the UK’s Federation of Engine Remanufacturers, said, “The result of last night’s EU referendum has caused an immediate reaction both in Europe and the markets, and the government must now work quickly to ensure economic stability over the coming weeks and months as part of the UK’s political and economic negotiations with the EU.” She continued, “We don’t envisage any immediate impact on the UK aftermarket and will continue to work closely with our colleagues throughout Europe to see what this result means for the UK independent aftermarket and the automotive industry as a whole.” She added, “After further exploration of this political restructure, we will analyse the effect it may have on current legislation and keep all of our members updated with the latest information at every opportunity.” Exchange of goods Matthias Wissman, President of VDA, said, “Every possible measure must be undertaken to enable the continued free movement of goods and services between the UK and the other EU countries.” He added, “Even after leaving, free exchange of goods with the Continent will still be to Britain’s net advantage.” He urged calmness during what

he called a period of uncertainty. “Following British departure from the EU, it will be in nobody’s interest to make the international flow of goods more expensive by erecting customs barriers between Britain and the European continent.” He also called on leaders of the EU in Brussels for transparency and better regulation. Some big industry players responded to the vote with press statements. With sales of some 2.7 billion pounds (3.7 billion euros) in 2015, the U.K. is currently Bosch’s second largest European market after Germany. Dr. Volkmar Denner, CEO of Robert Bosch GmbH commented in a press statement: “We are currently examining the effects of leaving the EU on our business. In addition, we have already put precautionary measures in place.” He added: “We currently do not have any plans to scale back our capital expenditure in the United Kingdom.” ZF Friedrichshafen AG, a German car parts manufacturer, issued a statement that said, “We respect the vote of leaving the EU as the sovereign decision of the British people. At this point, we cannot make any reliable predictions on how exactly Brexit will affect ZF’s business.” The company has approximately 3,000 employees at line locations in Great Britain. n

Austin, Texas develops remanufacturing hub As part of its attempt to reach zero waste by 2040, the Recycling Economic Development Program in the city of Austin, Texas is developing the Austin Remanufacturing Hub, a 105-acre eco-industrial park. According to Natalie Betts, Recycling Economic Development Liaison for the Austin Recovery & Economic Development Department of the City of Austin, “To make a more resilient system for recycling, to make a more environmentally efficient, cost-efficient recycling system and create jobs, we decided to focus on attracting remanufacturing companies to Austin. One of our strategies for doing that was to build this remanufacturing hub and to make land that the city owns available for recycling and reuse companies and have that be their designated home in Austin.” Economic value She explained that most of the city’s recyclable materials are leaving the community to be remade into new products elsewhere. “The city and the public put resources into making sure that recycled materials are collected, but we’re not really fully realizing the economic value of those raw materials that are sourced here in Austin because they are being sent somewhere else for remanufacturing.” Betts explained that they have a targeted list of business types they are trying to attract to the hub including those engaged in automotive remanufacturing. “The broad way to describe what we’re looking for is value-added processes and manufacturers that support our zero-waste

goals. That is, businesses that are turning wouldbe waste into new products, products that replace a disposable good, and products that enable a new version of another waste material from the land fill,” Betts says. “We want to focus as much as we can on attracting businesses that are doing work that is diverting materials to its highest and best use, so reuse, repair operations and upcycling take priority over recycling or downcycling,” she adds. Although the city originally planned to act as the master developer for the hub, it is now in the process of looking to bring in a developer partner. Benefits Betts says there will be a lot of benefits to firms that relocate to the hub. For one thing it is located in a triple freeport exemption zone and therefore will be exempt from county, city and school district tax. It is also located in the designated foreign trade zone of Central Texas. Betts said the site is located between two major Interstates with two state highways also located very close by. The airport is just north of the site and “you can access both coasts very easily. We really are well located strategically for a company to make this their U.S. home base.”

While the city searches for a developer who will determine the process companies who are interested in moving into the hub need to follow, Betts said she is happy to field inquiries from firms who are considering a move to the hub. She can be reached at: natalie.betts@austintexas.gov. Betts explains that the Austin Remanufacturing Hub is just one of the things the Austin Recycling Economic Development Program is doing “to reach its big picture goal of supporting businesses in the recycling and reuse sector.” Other programmes include a materials marketplace programme, helping companies connect with economic development resources and promoting local business that sell recycled, reused or upcycled materials. n

The consolidating reman market A report by Global Industry Analysts predicts the global market for remanufactured automotive parts will reach $139.8 billion by 2020. In fact GIA says automotive remanufacturing accounts for two-thirds of remanufacturing worldwide. However, while the overall remanufacturing market may be growing, the number of firms involved in remanufacturing may actually be shrinking as consolidation hits the remanufacturing market. It is happening in a big way with BBB Industries acquiring ATSCO Remanufacturing and Borg Warner acquiring Remy International, among others. In fact, 2015 saw the highest number of mergers and acquisition in the overall automotive market. This consolidation should come as no surprise as there has been consolidation in the automotive manufacturing segment with the number of U.S. automobile makers being dramatically reduced in recent years. Continued consolidation Jonathan Carey, Managing Director and Global Co-Head Automotive Aftermarket Investment Banking at Jefferies LLC, a US global investment bank and institutional securities firm, said mergers and acquisitions activity has been brisk in the lightand heavy-duty remanufacturing sector. He expects there to be continued consolidation “because at the end of the day consolidation allows folks to gain scale, not just get the benefits of cost synergies but also get the benefits of size and product depth availability.”

What is sparking consolidation in the remanufacturing industry? In some cases it is nothing different than what is causing other parts of the automotive industry as well as other industries to consolidate. In other cases it is a response to the growing emphasis on the circular economy while in still other situations technological change is the motivating factor. According to Fernand Weiland, former chairman of the European division of the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association, “People have been talking about recycling for years which meant things like shredding. The circular economy is more than just shredding; it is recovering and remanufacturing.” As a result some of the bigger players in the automotive and heavy-duty industry have become “keen on remanufacturing in the past several years; they want to be greener.” Changes in the industry There are a number of changes within the remanufacturing industry that are leading to consolidation, according to Ramon Hoekman, Vice President of Sales EMEA Aftermarket, WAI Global Europe, a leading parts manufacturer for the aftermarket. “Products are getting to be of higher quality than before and the complexities of remanufacturing

Number of Aftermarket Transactions (By Buyer Type)

today, along with parts proliferation, have fuelled consolidation.” He said this is particularly true in the European remanufacturing market.

“It’s a big issue for small companies to keep investing in testing technology.” While competition is also fierce, Hoekman said, standards continue to rise as companies reinvest back into all areas of their business. “The cost of testing remanufactured rotating electrical products is high, but has driven up quality standards and customer perceptions of remanufacturing. Investment remains key.” Finally Hoekman said that customers’ purchasing trends of both new and remanufactured starters and alternators continue to fluctuate, making future market predictions difficult. Joining forces Carey explained that light- and heavy-duty remanufacturing is very fragmented and that consolidation is taking place to “level the playing field following the consolidation of the retailers and WDs that the remanufacturers are selling to.” Weiland explains that when a Tier 1 supplier becomes interested in remanufacturing, rather than reinventing it “they can buy an existing reman company or subcontract to an independent remanufacturer.” “It is less likely,” according to Weiland, “that these Tier 1 suppliers will work together and combine their remanufacturing efforts.”

Strategic Buyers

Financial Buyers

On the other hand, small to medium-sized independent remanufacturers may join forces “to become stronger and offer a broader product range to acquire more mcarket share,” he added.

ReMaTecNews | 11

Many of the small to medium-sized independent remanufacturers are family-owned businesses that face succession issues. “If there is no successor for the business, the owner is obliged to sell.” This allows the OEMs to acquire “a specialised and very professional company if they want to buy into a remanufacturing company,” Weiland said.

“If there is no successor for the business, the owner is obliged to sell.” Cost concerns Nick Staub, President and CEO of Romaine Electric, a US-based manufacturer and remanufacturer of rotating electrical components, said, “A lot of companies that are in an acquisition mode are doing reman in lower cost countries, be it Mexico or China. They’re the ones that have been able to lower their costs to a point where they have an advantage over the companies that don’t do that. They have utilised an overall lower cost to gather up all the market share they can and then, when there is no more market share to grab, they start to look at acquisition as a way of gobbling up certain pieces of the market.” Another reason for consolidation among small and medium-sized remanufacturers is the lack of financing. As automobiles and cars have gotten more technologically advanced, remanufacturers have needed to make investments in their business in order to keep up with the changing technology. Staub sees another reason for this consolidation and contends it is the result of “the natural desire of business to have growth.” The remanufacturing industry is a mature one, which defines its own boundaries. It isn’t a situation where the industry itself is growing at a 15-20% rate like it was at one point. At this point the overall growth of the industry is limited so you see consolidation because the more successful companies are trying to grow by acquisition, as it is really the only option for them.” Platform investments Carey said that some of the consolidation is coming from private equity firms taking an interest in the remanufacturing space. He said these private equity firms are making “platform investments” in the remanufacturing industry. “Generally speaking the automotive aftermarket is a great place for private equity because it offers a combination of low risk and attractive yet predictable growth,” he

said. “The remanufacturing space is no exception.” However, private equity firms generally need some kind of scale and sophistication to start with. “Once they have that platform they’re willing to acquire smaller companies to add to the platform to continue to consolidate the space. A smaller company might not have the size, sophistication or reach of a larger company, but it may give a good product offering that would complement what is already there.” Pros and cons There are benefits to consolidation if “the acquiring company is committed to the industry and to providing customers with the best and easiest way to obtain reman products,” Staub said. It also allows for the independent business owner to see his business continue, albeit in a different form. In addition, for professionals who have worked at some of these smaller companies and are at “their limit of what they can do professionally, being acquired by a larger company opens up avenues

where they actually can use their experience in a bigger way and have the potential for more professional growth,” Staub said. While there are many upsides to consolidation, it is not without its drawbacks. Staub said this is especially true if the acquiring company “does not have a plan on how to take care of their own customers and those of the acquired company.” Weiland added, “If a remanufacturer has been in business for many, many years but then he is forced to sell either because he has no successor or because he can’t get funds, then suddenly you have a reputable company disappear from the market.” Then customers have fewer choices available to them. Staub said it can be emotionally difficult for customers when you take away their choices. “However, with the internet and the different Continued on page 13

Is Non-Destructive Cleaning Critical?

ARMEX Is The Only Choice When specifications and surface tolerances on parts cannot change, the only blasting abrasive to use is ARMEX. Other hard blasting abrasives can remove surface materials damaging parts and rendering them unusable. The gentle physical propriety of baking soda but yet aggressive cleaning ability is what makes ARMEX the only choice. ARMEX is also soluble meaning it will dissolve in both water and oil. ARMEX will never leave particles behind in critical passageways like other blasting abrasives can which increases the risk of parts failure when placed back into service.

Continued from page 11 channels by which product can get from point A to point B there is generally speaking no reason why it has to be a negative scenario.” The future Looking to the future, Hoekman believes that consolidations will continue because of the need to keep investing in “knowledge, materials and testing equipment.” He adds, “Companies will need to ensure they have the infrastructure in place to cope with the changing demands of the remanufacturing industry. Opportunities will present themselves and companies will need to identify and embrace them at the earliest opportunity.” Staub said he expects consolidation to continue to some extent but believes the major consolidation has already occurred. Some 15 to 20 years ago there were up to 10,000 small rotating electrical remanufacturers in the US and today that number is closer to 2,000.

According to Carey, “It is a safe bet that 10 years from now that number is going to be even smaller.”

numbers, although you could narrow that down to a few hundred to get your most popular numbers.

He believes consolidation of remanufacturers will continue “because their customers are going to continue to consolidate and have already consolidated at a far greater pace than the remanufacturers have. You naturally are going to see continued consolidation among remanufacturers.”

“This is more than a small location can handle because of the diversity of the product and then the complexity of it now that everything is tied into the car’s computer. The equipment needed for testing properly is now at a whole other level and that causes problems for a lot of small shops because of training and the expense of it,” Staub said.

He adds, “Scale benefits when you walk into a customer and have the ability to have multiple product lines and are able to fill orders at a greater rate than some of the smaller players. You carry a little bit more leverage with your customers.”

Carey concurred and added, “You either have to grow and make larger investments in your business in order to keep up or you have to join someone who’s doing that.”

“There has been a huge shrinkage in the marketplace and that is driven by new product from China, complexity of the products and diversity of the products,” Staub said. He explained that at one time 80% of the rotating electrical market could be covered with about 15 parts numbers. Today there are probably in the neighbourhood of 10,000 part

He continued, “We are going to continue to see the M&A markets stay strong. There is a lot of demand both from strategic buyers and from private equity firms looking for new platforms in this space. Both the light- and heavy-duty remanufacturing industries are fragmented with many family-owned and closely controlled businesses and that’s a sign for continued M&A activity.” n

The technological evolution of steering racks The hydraulic system is almost a century old: it was invented in the United States by Francis Davis, in the 1920’s. However, it wasn’t until 1951 that the system became commercially available and today, most cars still operate with power steering based on a hydraulic system. What has changed is that modern systems are fully electric. The continuous entry of new elements and electronic components in the communication protocols of vehicles’ elements, the so-called CAN Bus technology, makes the remanufacturing of EPS (Electronic Power Steering) systems a day-to-day challenge.

‘Know-how is not in machines, its people that make the difference.’ This certainly applies to the Spanish company Lizarte, which has been dealing with the remanufacturing of automotive parts including steering racks since 1973. With regard to these steering systems, they were initially manual steering racks but since 1992, the company has also modified assisted steering racks. Luis Mari Álvarez, Head of R&D and Quality at Lizarte, gives an overview similar to that given at the APRA Symposium in Birmingham in May 2016 about how the technology affecting the steering systems of vehicles has evolved, “The first technological revolution was the introduction of power-assisted steering racks. Oil and pressure made driving both easier and smoother. The second milestone, launched in the last decade, was the introduction of EPS and EHPS (Electronic Hydraulic Power System); electricity and sensors were added to the steering system. This resulted in lower

consumption of fuel, improved efficiency, better connections and new functionalities that linked with other systems of the car.” The evolution in five steps The evolution of EPS and EHPS consists of five steps. The first was the introduction of electrical motors. These relatively simple motors were easy to place in the car as they had no sensors, but they offered no diagnosis when components weren’t working properly. The second step included the introduction of PCB boards, transistors, sensors and drivers. The third step was the introduction of communication networks with accessory software and maps. Despite all communication taking place originally over one wire, this did make diagnosis possible. However, it was quite complex to connect the unit to the car. The fourth step, thanks to the CAN Bus multiplexed

network, created a giant leap forward whilst at the same time making things much simpler. Álvarez explains, “The more cables there are, the greater the probability of errors in communication

“We want to go beyond remanufacture, perfection is our ambition.” between different parts of the car. An enormous number of different parts needs to be able to transmit information to one another; think for

example of the speed of the car that the ABS system gives to the rest of connected systems within the car.” The CAN Bus technology offers a solution to this: information is shared in one central place, following the CAN protocol. Fewer cables and the standardisation of information delivery then enable clear information to quickly reach all the different components. The fifth step will be formed by future developments; Lizarte is working hard to adopt these as soon as possible. “FlexRay, CAN FD (Flexible Data Rate), Ethernet, Drive by Wire and who knows what else, are still to come,” says Álvarez. “Whatever developments occur, we are ready at Lizarte to identify them and make them practically applicable.” The objectives of the e-LAB Jorge Bobadilla, Electronics Engineer in Lizarte’s e-LAB, illustrates the process they use. “In the e-LAB, we have developed our own emulator machine called Smartcan which allows us to develop diagnosis and emulation processes. But the most important thing right now in the e-LAB is that we are working in electronic test systems in

order to guarantee to the maximum the best quality of our electronic products. To do that properly, the e-LAB has conducted a study on different components to find out exactly how they work. In addition, we have developed our own in-circuit tests to make the analysis and diagnosis possible. These tests have been developed for various components, starting with the most important basic components of a steering mechanism. The feedback that comes from our in-circuit tests establishes our own quality parameters. The result after the development of this working process is as follows: we know the signals, parameters and how the steering mechanism can be analysed. After this analysis, it is then possible to replace the necessary electronic components in order to get the steering mechanism working again.” The human touch makes all the difference Richard Izquierdo, Marketing Manager at Lizarte, emphasizes that technology is one of the company’s pillars, but only with the ideas and input of Lizarte’s specialist team can new insights have a chance of practical application.

“Technicians are the key, know-how isn’t found in machines and measuring equipment,” he says. “It’s not just about technological progress; it’s mainly about human skills.” Regarding circular economy, Izquierdo says, “Reusing components is also very important in terms of sustainability.

“It’s not just about technological progress; it’s mainly about human skills.” In this context, we are waiting for different regulations coming from the EU that will push the automobile industry to be more and more involved with the circular economy. At Lizarte, we are proud to confirm that our company is already a part of the circular economy and we are, due to our remanufacturing business, making our own contribution to the environment.” n Founded by Mr. Eduardo Huarte in 1973 in Pamplona, Spain, Lizarte was the first European company devoted to the remanufacturing of vehicle steering racks. Today, Lizarte can be found in over 35 countries with 15 warehouses in Spain, France and Germany. Over 90 people work for Lizarte, including nine professionals at the e-LAB, where testing protocols are developed to meet continuously changing standards. Lizarte delivers over 4,500 different parts for all common brands of car; from AC compressors and suspension spheres to diesel injectors, steering pumps and steering racks.

Global demand for remanufactured automotive parts expected to grow By Denise Rondini

can inhibit the importing or exporting of cores. However, there are some signs that changes are possible in those markets while the Russian and Turkish markets are less likely to see an easing of restrictions meaning they are less likely to see a growth in remanufacturing.

Light-duty remanufacturing will be a $50-billion business at the manufacturing level by 2022, according to Frost & Sullivan. In reporting the finding on a study on the global remanufacturing market during a webinar, Kumar Saha, Research Manager at Frost & Sullivan, said the current Class 1-3 reman market is estimated at $31.7 billion and added that while the United States will continue to dominate the global reman market there will be significant growth in other areas of the world. Remanufacturing in Asia Pacific is forecast to grow faster than other parts of the world while China and Brazil are also “attractive countries for reman.” Mexico and Eastern Europe are emerging as low-cost remanufacturing hubs for North America and Europe. North America is a strong remanufacturing centre because of the ease of doing business there, the presence of a variety of manufacturers and strong core availability.

Global remanufacturing growth in the auto motive parts market faces some challenges. Areas of growth The overall growth rate for reman is expected to be about six to seven percent, but Saha said that China and Brazil are predicted to grow at about 15%. Ageing vehicle populations are one of the main drivers behind this expected growth as well as a growing awareness of remanufacturing.

Another challenge with the Brazilian market is that today 80% to 85% of the market is repair/ rebuild. Despite these challenges Brazil is expected to become a regional hub for Latin America where the average age of vehicles is 8.7 years and by 2017 it is expected that 75% of vehicles will be out of warranty.

North America will see growth in remanufactured turbochargers, electronics and electronic control units with manufacturers like Cardone, BBB, Bosch and SMP playing a significant role in the market. Bosch, Delphi, and Valeo will be some of the key players in the European reman market, which will see growth in electronics, ECUs and turbochargers. ECUs, electronics and engines will see the most growth in Brazil where Bosch, Remy, Knorr-Bremse, Caterpillar, Cummins and Detroit will be market leaders. In China engines, transmissions, starters and alternators will see growth with Wabco, Caterpillar, Cummins and Delphi being among the key firms involved in reman. Challenges Global remanufacturing growth in the automotive parts market faces some challenges. The movement of cores is a challenge in places like Brazil and China where government regulations

Saha explained that, “At the end of the day education needs to happen” if remanufacturing is to grow. Avijit Ghosh, Principal Consultant, Aftermarket Mobility for Frost & Sullivan and author of the research, added, “In the emerging world, as the market is evolving from repaircentric to service-oriented, remanufacturing will become more attractive.” This is due in part to the price difference between new and reman (reman is 30% to 40% less than new), available warranty on remanufactured products and concern for the environment. But he echoes Saha that “education is the key because there is confusion between remanufactured and used.” n

OPINION

ReMaTecNews | 18

Are you doing your part to tell the reman story? By Denise Rondini I was recently doing an article for an American trucking industry publication on parts proliferation. One of the things I asked the people I spoke with to do was to define terms typically used to describe categories of parts available in the aftermarket. Obviously I included the terms rebuilt parts and remanufactured parts in my list. Given that I was speaking with parts suppliers, distributors and industry consultants it was no surprise that many of them were able to clearly differentiate between rebuilt and remanufactured. However, several people I spoke with said that to them the term remanufactured part was interchangeable with the term rebuilt part. That got me thinking that if there are people in the industry who do not recognize the difference between rebuilt and reman how can we expect fleets to know the difference? One manufacturer I spoke with said he did not think a lot of fleets really understand the difference between a rebuilt part and one that is remanufactured. They don’t understand the difference in the processes used on those two categories of parts. When I asked him why there was this misconception, he said he thinks the problem is historic and although there has been progress

in the last 20 years in explaining the difference there still remains a big sector of truck users who do not understand that there is a difference. He says we as an industry have not done a good job of making this difference between rebuilt and remanufactured clear to the end user. Which brings me to Michigan’s HB 4344, which although vetoed by Michigan’s governor, would have banned the use of aftermarket and remanufactured parts in the repair of vehicles less than five years old. The fact that a bill like that recently was wending its way through the Michigan legislature concerns me. And reinforces that remanufacturers really have not done a good enough job explaining how the remanufacturing process works and how the end result of remanufacturing is often not just a product that is ‘as good as new, but actually better than new.’ If fleets and owner-operators better understand the difference between rebuilt and reman they could do a better job of making sure their elected officials understood the difference which would prevent them from thinking that legislation like Michigan’s HB 4344 is a good idea. So if fleets don’t understand the differences and legislators don’t understand the difference it begs the question: who is going to teach them? To me, the answer is obvious. Everyone involved

Denise Rondini in the remanufacturing industry needs to become a reman evangelist. We all need to get out there and make sure that we correct fleets when they use the term rebuilt to describe a remanufactured part. We need to continue to tell the story of the exacting processes that are used to remanufacture a part with special focus on all the quality checks that are inherent in most remanufacturing processes. And we have to keep telling this story time and time and time again. After all, if we don’t tell our story, someone else will tell it for us and they may not get the facts right. n

Reman trade show Big R/ReMaTecUSA returns to Strip and changes duration October 2016 will see the third edition of remanufacturing trade show Big R/ ReMaTecUSA. Jointly organized by APRA North America and ReMaTec show organizer RAI Amsterdam, the event is due to attract industry professionals from both North America as well as across the globe, to network and do business. After two successful years at the RIO Hotel and Convention Center, show organisers have announced that the event will be returning to the Las Vegas Strip for its 2016 edition. On 29 and 30 October, the remanufacturing trade show will take up residence in the popular Paris Hotel. Changes in concept The move back to the Strip is accompanied by a change to the show concept. Following extensive research conducted amongst visitors and exhibitors, the duration of the show will move from three days to two. The two days will offer extended opening hours, providing exhibitors and visitors the opportunity for doing quick and fast business. Hotel offer Big R/ReMaTecUSA will be taking place in the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas. For hotel stays between 26 October and 3 November the show is offering special rates with room prices starting from as little as $149.00 per room, per night. Go online to www.rematec.com/ usa/your-trip to find more information and to book. Limited availability.

“Big R/ReMaTecUSA is the largest show dedicated to the remanufacturing industry in North America,” explains Joe Kripli, APRA President. “But we also understand that our exhibitors and attendees have multiple product and customer portfolios as they continue their week with the AAPEX and SEMA shows. Moving to two days allows for a complete week of customer and exhibitor interaction, networking, buying and selling from reman to distributor to retail.” Programme Attendees to the show with a conference pass can join the sessions of the APRA seminar programme, which will bring the latest develop ments in the industry, technical workshops and educational sessions.

A hot topic is found in 3D printing, a science fiction myth a few years ago, but rapidly becoming reality, also for remanufacturers. The ability to print component parts will allow companies to remanufacture parts even if component parts are unavailable. It may also allow remanufacturers to print component parts on demand to decrease inventory costs or make short-run remanufacturing projects profitable. E-commerce will be on the agenda too, as well as more technical sessions on mechatronics, start-stop systems and turbochargers. In addition to APRA’s annual Electrical Clinic, the programme will feature a seminar on cleaning technology, a vital part of all remanufacturing operations.

APRA members This year, the show introduces a special discount for APRA members who visit the show. They receive a discount by booking through the APRA website. APRA members can register their visit through the APRA website www.apra.org whereas all other attendees can register via www.rematec.com/usa.

Exhibiting companies The 2015 show attracted nearly 30% new exhibitors, offering attendees an even greater variety of reman products and industry segments. “All of the first-time exhibitors were surprised at how well the show was attended and the remanufacturing-focused audience,” said Joe Continued on page 21

Another time, another place In a significant boost to the UK’s automotive component and supply chain, the UK’s first automotive trade show, Automechanika Birmingham, was launched. Not only did the show, held from 7 to 9 June 2016, focus on the aftermarket in general, it also featured exhibitors from the remanufacturing sector. ReMaTecNews sought their impressions. By Steve McQueen With a broad range of exhibitors from almost every sector of the aftermarket, it was no surprise to find that suppliers to the remanufacturing sector were well represented when the UK’s second largest city played host to the country’s inaugural Automechanika show. Simple curiosity, close geographical proximity or the fear of missing opportunities were just some of the good reasons to be there. Roy Kendrick, Group Managing Director at heavyduty truck and bus parts specialist Direct Group, operates from a remanufacturing plant less than 50 miles from the exhibition centre. It was close enough to make the opportunity too good to miss and he was not disappointed. “We’ve seen truck people from Europe and Africa facing remanufacturing issues that we can help with. We also made contact with another remanufacturer that might be able to support us with core for our various service exchange programmes,” he said. “We wouldn’t normally exhibit at Automechanika in Frankfurt, but it might be something we will consider in the future.” Engine remanufacturer Ivor Searle has not exhibited anywhere for over ten years, but it will be back. A new e-commerce website was launched here and it is looking for new distributors to develop its overseas business. “We’ve seen potential customers from the UK as well as France, Italy and Germany,” said David Eszenyi, Business Development Fleet Manager.

Roy Kendrick, Direct Group, Group Managing Director Engine rebuilding parts supplier Westwood Cylinder Liners is a local company with a reputation for exhibiting at international trade shows. However, it didn’t have such a good experience here. Managing Director Duncan Andrews had hoped to generate interest in the company’s specialised ranges of small-batch production runs of engine cylinder liners: “I’m afraid it hasn’t worked out that way. We had hoped we might get some new business here as we’re only based half an hour down the road. The type of people we expected to see just didn’t come.”

Duncan Andrews, Westwood Cylinder Liners, Managing Director

As a core supplier and a visitor to the show Kevork Baghzian, Euro Car Parts Germany, had a different perspective on the event. “I feel this show is more for the local market. As an international supplier we exhibit at the Frankfurt show and we will be there again this year but something like the ReMaTec show is probably more appropriate for us. It’s for remanufacturers and the focus there is just what we need for our business.” ASNU supplies fuel injector testing, servicing and cleaning equipment and its managing director Phil Ellisdon was very impressed with the diverse range of exhibitors in Birmingham. “It’s not a garage

On the agenda: Automechanika Frankfurt Kevork Baghzian, Euro Car Parts Germany equipment show or a reman show. This is a mini Frankfurt show,” he said. “But I will be surprised if they get two-thirds of these people here next time. A lot of the OE companies might not come.” He feels that, with approximately 14 other shows around the world, the Automechanika brand has been diluted. “I will gauge the impact of this show at Frankfurt,” he added. “If a lot of the people who are here, don’t go there, I will begin to question the value of Frankfurt as an event in itself.” Headquartered in Lyon, remanufacturing equip ment supplier Intitek has a new starter motor tester for remanufacturers under development, but that launch is scheduled for Frankfurt in September. Technical Sales Manager Guillaume Rossi said the company had had a good experience in Birmingham but that it had never exhibited in the UK before and he wasn’t sure if it would merit a regular place in the company’s diary as part of a future sales strategy. “We don’t have many UK customers, so we wanted to test this one out. Frankfurt is the most important international show for us. The ReMaTec show, in Amsterdam, is also good for us. We have exhibited there twice and we will probably go back again.” See you there, then, Guillaume! n

parts2clean returns to its October timeslot in 2017 From 2017, parts2clean, the international trade fair for industrial parts and surface cleaning, will revert back to its traditional autumn timeslot. This means that next year, parts2clean will take place from 24 to 26 October in Stuttgart, Germany. The show claims to offer the whole world of industrial parts and surface cleaning under one roof. “As the event organiser, we are responding to the wishes of our participating exhibitors,” remarked Olaf Daebler, Senior Vice President for parts2clean at Deutsche Messe. “The October timeslot is favoured by the overwhelming majority of our exhibitors,” he said, adding that the annual cycle of parts2clean would remain unchanged. Visitors from all over the world This year’s parts2clean fair was held from 31 May to 2 June and welcomed more than 7,400 visitors from 25 different countries. As with previous editions, this year’s event offered a comprehensive market overview of the best in industrial cleaning solutions for a range of industries, materials and requirements. A statistical breakdown showed that

mechanical and plant engineering, automotive manufacturing, surface technology as well as treatment and metalworking were the top visiting industries this year. Meeting place for decision makers Post-show analysis revealed that 99% of visitors were industry professionals and that around 85% of these were either in charge of their organisation’s plant investment decisions or had input into them. Some 33% of visitors indicated they had come to the fair with the firm intention

Successful elements return Successful elements from previous editions of parts2clean will return in 2017. The Expert Forum, for example, gives keynote speakers from industry, science and research the opportunity to highlight new developments, sketch out pathways for quality control, process and cost optimisation, and report on best practice applications. The great success of guided tours at previous shows means that these will also return in 2017, this time organised in both English and German. The aim of these tours is to give participants a good understanding of the extensive exhibition in a relatively short time. Twice a day, trained guides lead groups of up to 25 people to visit selected exhibitors. Each tour visits six exhibitors who each give a short presentation of up to 10 minutes. n

Additive Manufacturing Europe 2016: see, learn and meet The first edition of Additive Manufacturing Europe took place 28-30 June at RAI Amsterdam. Here, the full ecosystem of AM / 3D printing technologies was on display. With the increased interest for the technology from the reman industry, ReMaTecNews decided to investigate. 3D printing, or additive manufacturing (AM), is continuing its rapid expansion, with key industries investing significantly in research and development projects, hardware, and expertise. This activity continues to advance solutions and applications for various print technologies for prototyping, tooling, and most importantly, final part manufacturing. At Additive Manufacturing Europe 2016 all specialisms were present; exhibitors included BigRep, EnvisionTEC, Formlabs, Höganäs, Mcor / AGA 3D Color Solutions, Prodways, Smit Röntgen (Philips), Trumpf, UL and Ultimaker. Dozens of live demonstrations Live demonstrations of systems, materials and technologies completed the event as the notto-miss pan-European business show for additive manufacturing /3D printing. Visitors could attend demonstrations of systems such as

StereoLithography (SL), Digital Light Processing (DLP), Continuous liquid Interface Production (CLIP), Electron Beam Melting (EBM), Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) and sheet lamination. Concerning technologies, design and manufacturing software, visualization software, inspection, metrology, scanning and digitizing equipment, and finishing solutions were in the spotlight. Focus on three sectors In addition to live demonstrations and new product launches, the show included a conference program delivering information on the latest trends and technologies, alongside practical case studies for additive manufacturing/3D printing. Each day was focused on a different sector, successively healthcare, aerospace, and automotive. For automotive manufacturers,

advances in AM technologies are allowing them to create enhanced designs that result in less expensive, safer and lighter products in the shortest time possible. Inspiring workshops Across the three days of the event, UL (a leading provider of AM training programs) presented three inspiring one-day workshopsduring the show. The trainings covered some of the most important topics in the industry, from understanding the benefits and limitations of different 3D printing technologies and materials through to advanced design and testing. The next event in the series is Additive Manufacturing Americas 2016, taking place 7-9 December at the Pasadena Convention Center. n

MERA and AASA laud veto of Motor Vehicle Service and Repair Act The Motor & Equipment Remanufacturers Association (MERA) and the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association (AASA) applaud Michigan Governor Rick Snyder for his veto of HB 4344, ”The Motor Vehicle Service and Repair Act,” citing concerns about the measure’s negative impact on the automotive aftermarket industry. In his letter to Michigan legislators, Snyder said, “I am unable to sign this bill because it overreaches in the limitation of aftermarket parts negatively impacting consumers and creating the potential for negative consequences for Michigan’s automotive industry.”

Ensuring the strength of the industry Also John Chalifoux, MERA President and Chief Operating Officer gave a reaction to the veto: “I am proud of our members who effectively voiced their concerns about the bill’s potential to impede competition and limit access to highquality remanufactured parts for Michigan drivers. Snyder’s letter announcing the veto noted the important contributions of the aftermarket and remanufacturing to Michigan’s economy. As Michigan continues its comeback and continues to be a leader in promoting new technology in the automotive industry, it’s imperative that we ensure all components of that industry can remain strong, including Michigan’s robust aftermarket parts industry.” n

Bill Long, AASA President and Chief Operating Officer, reacted, “We commend Governor Snyder for this veto, which ensures motorists’ freedom of choice about their vehicle’s service and repair. This is a major victory for our members.”

Monark: where traditional craftsmanship meets advanced industrial process Monark Automotive GmbH delivers, as the company says itself, “solutions in spare parts.” However, that description does sell the business somewhat short. The original company first registered with the Chamber of Commerce in Hamburg in 1951 and that is where the company’s head office is still based. The development and production of component parts, however, is housed in the factory at Lengenfeld these days and at the beginning of 2014, the product and service portfolio was further enhanced with the integration of the Dresden Remanufacturing Centre formerly known as Dresdner Einspritzsysteme GmbH & Co.KG. Here, thousands of fuel injection pumps, injectors, pumping elements and nozzle holders are overhauled every year.

Cleaned and ready for dismantling ‘Best of both worlds’ The first thing you notice when you walk into Monark’s Remanufacturing Centre in Dresden are the enormous rooms full of components in crates and on pallets, combined with the most modern tools and high-tech testing equipment. “This combination is what we call the ‘best

“Reman is not an off-the-shelf business, as advances in technology never stand still.” of both worlds’”, says René Liebert, Factory Manager of the Remanufacturing Centre. “It’s where traditional craftsmanship meets state-ofthe-art industrial process.” Some of the wellknown names in Monark’s customer portfolio

are made up of wholesale, Original Equipment Manufacturers and companies that deliver Original Equipment & Services. They include wellknown industry brands like Daimler, John Deere and Scania. The remanufacturing activities in Dresden are brand-independent, although most of the injection pumps come from Bosch, Delphi and Denso. “We carry out serial production, but really we specialise in creating unique solutions. Reman is not an off-the-shelf business, as advances in technology never stand still.” Retaining and increasing value “Our way of working is based on two key areas: firstly, value retention and secondly, increasing value,” Liebert continues. “We help realize retained value, by remanufacturing equipment, components and accessories for the commercial and passenger vehicles of leading car manufacturers, as well as agricultural machinery, construction machinery and special vehicles. We increase value by developing new and innovative products to improve the efficiency, safety and operational comfort of the aforementioned

vehicles. Sustaining and boosting value are not just empty slogans; we see it as our mission to bring products to market that are comparable to the original, both in functionality and quality.” Comprehensive regulation and legislation Regulation and legislation for remanufacturing are both extensive and complex. Liebert, “There are many government rules and regulations with regards to the environment that we must adhere to. We believe, however, that these are no more than they should be and we would even go a step further. Not only is Monark certified in accordance with DIN standard IS 9001, the company’s processes with regards to the reuse of materials have also been awarded ISO TS-16949 certification. This is the highest standard for the automotive industry and we’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved. Regulation and legislation are not always the only things we have to take into account at the different stages of our business; incidentally, customers have their own standards they want us to meet. With regards to injection pumps, for example, every single pump is tested,

Measurement is the key: only after thorough testing can products leave the Monark factory adjusted and tuned at advanced test stations in accordance with our customers’ wishes.” Stock overview and smart planning When old parts first arrive, they are thoroughly examined and a comprehensive record of their features is made. Many of the delivered components are accompanied by a list of characteristics, but this is not always the case. Several OEMs for example have chosen not only to transfer their reman-operations to Monark, but to outsource the entire process to them. In practice, this means that small and large quantities of parts regularly arrive at Monark’s reman location in Dresden. Here, number, part type, usability and storage location of the components are recorded. “With thousands of parts in stock, a sound and transparent administration system is necessary; both for the customer and for ourselves,” says Liebert. “We want to deliver what the customer wants as quickly as possible, and that can only be achieved with a comprehensive and up-to-date stock overview and with a clever planning and purchasing of work, machinery and equipment.” People’s hands make the difference The process of remanufacturing fuel injection pumps, injectors, pumping elements and nozzle

holders is made up of many different steps. After the initial general survey, everything is cleaned (usually by sand blasting) followed by the disassembly of all components. Reusable parts will be cleaned and remanufactured. At this point, the components can be rebuilt. The assembly process is followed by extensive testing after which the components are stored and/or packed and delivered. Most of the

steps within the process at Monark are carried out by hand by their nearly 30 employees. Liebert says, “It’s our employees who make the label ‘Made in Germany’ what it is. A label that stands for engineering know-how, experience, reliability and trustworthiness. Despite all of our state-of-the-art equipment, it’s still people’s hands that make the real difference at Monark.” n

The pump is fully rebuilt by hand, with remanufactured parts where possible and new parts where needed

Buy online and get next-day delivery Investment in online technology could have given one of the UK’s largest independent engine remanufacturers a leading edge over its competitors. Last month (June), Cambridgeshire-based Ivor Searle intro duced its new e-commerce website for remanufactured engines at new trade show Automechanika Birmingham.

A Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) cleaning machine has been developed for the heavyduty truck market. DPFs are routinely installed on diesel engines in millions of vehicles and low-cost reman solutions are in big demand.

David Eszenyi, Ivor Searle’s Business Development Fleet Manager, says “the move marks a step ahead of every other engine remanufacturer because more than anything else, the cataloguing is perfect. You can order an engine from your phone, add it to your basket and get it delivered the next day.” Established in 1946, Ivor Searle is one of the UK’s leading engine-independent reman specialists, supplying the aftermarket with reman engines, gearboxes and turbo products for cars and light CVs. A £1-million investment in a new production plant four years ago increased production capacity and enabled the development of extensive stock

ranges for its reman engines, turbochargers and gearboxes. All of the company’s reman products are now available through the e-commerce website. It is hoped that investment will also help Ivor Searle to drive further sales around Europe. n

Alternator testing time AutoDiagger, the Polish diagnostic testing equipment specialist, has developed a new testing system for the alternator remanufacturing market. Designed for 12V and 24V alternators of up to 300A, the AD500 alternator test bench features manual and automatic test modes, a pneumatic belt tensioner, an energy recovery system and wireless printing. An updatable database is refreshed via a USB. The AD500 is a standalone machine that is capable of testing the very latest digital protocol units. “We are targeting the mid-range remanufacturing market. If you are remanufacturing ten alternators a day, this machine is for you,” says company spokesman Lukasz Szmajkowski. From its base in Gdansk, northern Poland, the company supplies a range of diagnostic equipment for remanufacturers including handheld units, regulator testers and alternator voltage regulator adapters. Its long list of sales agents include the Wood Automotive Group from Huddersfield in the UK. n

Cleaning machine is cost cutter

Equipment manufacturer Hartridge of Buckingham in the UK, says the Hurricane DPf Master will be available for delivery to workshops from July. It will enable vehicle owners and operators to remove hardened soot and ash deposits collected by the DPF during scheduled service and maintenance procedures. “Vehicle downtime can be reduced and vehicle reliability improved because premature DPF failures can be avoided,” says Hartridge. The fully automatic machine is easy to install, quick and easy to use, runs off a standard pressurised air supply and has a small workshop footprint. Waste is collected in a sealable bag for disposal according to local environmental regulations. n

NEWS FROM FRANCE

Ministerial decree on spare parts in the frame of the circular economy As from January 2017, French garages will be obliged to propose used spare parts to their clients that have been previously removed from scrapped cars in authorized dismantling centers. Background of that decree is to promote and support the so-called circular economy. The regulation was published end of May in the official journal and is required by the energy transition law dated august 2015. The decree, signed by Ségolène Royal, French minister of energy and environment, indicates “that garage professionals dealing with servicing and repair of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles should give the end-customer the possibility to go for used parts instead of new ones for the repair - all in the background of the circular economy. Involved parts are: • Removable body parts • Glass, non-glued • Optical parts • Certain electronic and mechanic parts such as engines, gearbox and transmission components “This new law permits to professionals to propose parts which come from 1.700 authorized dismantling centers for scrapped cars. The quality of these parts would have been checked before finding their way back to the market,”

states the ministry of energy and environment. “This measure is aimed to save non-renewable resources of energy and raw material by reusing equipments unused in scrapped cars but still functioning.” The minister adds: “The prices of the reused parts will be attractive in relation to new parts prices.” Press statement from our French member association FEDA Decree for spare parts coming from the circular economy: a definition heading in the right direction, but still incomplete In response to the publishing of the decree related to the use of spare parts coming from the circular economy, FEDA is pleased that “standard exchange” parts have been included in the definition of spare parts coming from the circular economy. This inclusion had been proposed by FEDA, and its importance was stressed to deputy François Michel Lambert, founder and President of the circular economy institute, when attending the “CDA meetings” organized by FEDA last March, which were dedicated to this issue. FEDA regrets that “repaired exchange” parts weren’t integrated in the decree due to the lack of a legal definition. Hence, FEDA will work closely with its business groups “Diesel and New

by Volker Schittenhelm Technologies” and “Engine Remanufacturers” to propose a legal definition for this type of spare parts to the public authorities, just like was done for standard exchange parts. Repairing exchange parts is done in local workshops according to the OE standards and can fulfil the demand for spare parts coming from the circular economy. It is a significant option for the development of the local economy and is a fitting answer to the purchasing power of motorists. FEDA reminds that its members offer a wide range of spare parts adapted to the different needs of repairers, from the OE part to the reused part, to the equivalent quality part, standard exchange and repaired exchange part- regardless of current legal provisions. The offer to the consumers will only be complete when the “repair clause” for the visible spare parts will also be included in accordance with the recommendations of the “Europe Economics” report published in June 2015, which fully confirms the report from the “Competition Authority” from October 2012. n

Cooperation with China Auto Parts Reman Association On 18 April the FIRM Board and Secretary met with the General Secretary of CAPRA in Brussels. After exchanging information about remanu facturing in China and in Europe both parties agreed on further cooperation in the fields of: – Communication and cooperation between the auto parts remanufacturing enterprises of China and EU

– Establishing of a reverse logistics system for cores (used auto parts) – Market development of remanufactured products – Policy research on measures (funding, legal) to support and develop the reman industry – Development of the automotive reman technology – Working on reman standards for auto parts – Offering a platform for future contacts between Small and Medium Size Companies in China and Europe

For more information, please visit www.FIRM-org.eu or write an email to communication@FIRM-org.eu.

The reman market in China is a fast-growing one. The actual vehicle car park is approx. 170 million cars; in future, every year 24 million will be sold. So Chinese reman companies need competence, know-how, equipment, technology, training and other resources to handle this volume. During ReMaTec 2017 (18-20 June 2017, www.rematec.com/amsterdam) a delegation of more than 30 Chinese companies will come over to Amsterdam to exchange information, share experiences and discuss legal and political aspects of reman. n

World Remanufacturing Summit 2016 and 6th China Remanufacturing Summit 2016 By Rolf Steinhilper and Fernand Weiland On 25 May 2016, remanufacturing profes sionals from around the world gathered in China´s capital Beijing for the next wellattended edition of the conference series of World Remanufacturing Summits which circulate the globe via Europe, USA and Asia in a three-years-sequence since their launch at the University of Bayreuth/Germany in 2012. Respected Professor BinShi, Chairman of the Committee, opened the event. Then Conference Chairman Prof. Sheng Zhu welcomed 200 delegates to a full-day programme of presentations which covered a worldwide portfolio of relevant topics. Prominent speakers from governmental bodies, industry and science took the stage. Important issues of the future direction of remanufacturing endeavors in China were addressed by several leading representatives from the political side, followed by two keynote speeches from conference co-chairman Professor Rolf Steinhilper from Germany and Professor Sheng Zhu from China about key technological developments for successful remanufacturing operations of

tomorrow. Participants also enjoyed a glance at several exhibition booths accompanying the Summit during the morning session breaks. After lunch, nine more presenters, among them six European experts from Denmark, Poland, United Kingdom, Finland, Sweden and Germany

together with their colleagues from the hosting country China, rounded up the global scope of the 2016 World Remanufacturing Summit, leaving no doubt that there are plenty of opportunities for further growth and innovation. Readers interested in further information are welcome to visit the

Summit website or to approach the chairmen and speakers directly. The next World Reman Summit 2017 is intended to continue to serve as the leading forum for international remanufacturing research and industry-related collaboration. At the time of going to print, one preferred option was to stay in Asia once more and organise 2017´s Summit at the Advanced Remanufacturing Technology Center ARTC in Singapore, but with a final decision still to be announced. The “World Remanufacturing Summit 2016“ was followed a day later by the two-day “6th China Remanufacturing Summit 2016“ which was jointly created in 2010 by the National Key Laboratory for Remanufacturing (NKLR), Duxes (Duxes Shanghai Business Consulting Inc.), and the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association (APRA). The 1st Summit was held in Hangzhou in 2011 and since then the meetings hosted by Duxes, the NKLR and APRA, directed by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the Ministry of Industry and Technology (MIIT), have been very successful.

The recent 6th China Remanufacturing Summit was co-chaired by James Zhu, President of Duxes, and Joe Kripli, President of APRA, who gave an overview of remanufacturing in North America and Europe. APRA has founded a new division in AsiaPacific where it has approximately 50 members with plans to develop the region significantly in the near future to meet remanufacturing demands. The Summit invited speakers from government, research institutes, and remanufacturing industry businesses to focus on the many themes important for the development of remanufacturing in China and the Asia-Pacific region. In China, the State Council issued an important document last year titled “China Manufacturing Plan 2025“ in which remanufacturing is promoted as an important part of achieving a circular economy. According to automotive associations and government sources, China already has 200 official remanufacturers but the real figure may be even higher. At the Summit, certification of reman products, inspection of cores, warranty use, and remanufacturing quality standards for IAM and OEM remanufacturers were focal points of

discussion due to the ambiguity of local regulations. Members of key governmental organisations and experienced reman business leaders participated in panel discussions for analysis and to help attendees better understand these policies. Despite the various obstacles which remanufacturers face in China, the industry continues to grow as companies anxiously await regulatory changes. The industry as a whole must continue to be instrumental in showing the benefits of remanufacturing and encourage policy makers to take action on these issues. The future of Chinese remanufacturing shows enormous potential and the industry leaders in attendance showed enthusiasm and optimism for all they have already accomplished, and for what they can achieve together through knowledge sharing and cooperation. n NEW APRA Europe MEMBERS since the last publication: • Milonas Diesel Systems, Greece • DAS Europe, Italy • Savi Elettronica srl, Italy

United Nations recognises Caterpillar’s contribution to sustainable development In September 2015, countries in the United Nations adopted a set of goals to end poverty, combat climate change and fight injustice and inequality by 2030, as part of the new sustainability development agenda. Under its UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), 17 global goals were identified. According to Caterpillar, in a recent report, the UN “recognised three of Caterpillar’s key initiatives as examples of private sector organisations that are driving action toward the goals.” In the industrial manufacturing industry, three Caterpillar initiatives were profiled to show specific ideas and practical examples for three of the 17 SDGs. In SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy – Cat’s Hybrid Microgrid Solutions were profiled. “Remote industry sites, villages and islands have been depending on Caterpillar for energy, grid backup and sustainable continuous power,” according to the company’s website. The company offers a full range of hybrid microgrid solutions ranging from 10kW to 100 MW. It is integrating photovoltaic

(PV) modules into traditional generator set power solutions to reduce the cost of electricity. In SDG 13 – Climate Action – Cat was recognised for reducing worksite emissions. The company says it works with its customers to minimize their energy use and GHG emissions. Cat has worked with mining companies, roadway construction projects, highway contractors and others. “We work to create innovative new Caterpillar products and solutions that enable better business and sustainability performance; at the same time, we seek continuous improvement on our existing products to meet the same business demands,” the company said on its website. In SDG 15 – Life on Land – Cat was recognised for its restoring natural infrastructure initiative. The

UN estimates that more than 25% of the earth’s lands are now considered “highly degraded” due to poor management practices that lead to deforestation and desertification. In November of 2015, Cat convened the Restoring Natural Infrastructure Summit. Cat published a white paper dealing with recommendations on the natural infrastructure restoration. A company spokesperson said, “Caterpillar is honoured to have our sustainable development efforts recognised as an early leader in private sector action toward achieving the global goals. The profiles highlight opportunities where companies expect to create value for shareholders as well as society – projects where we are able to do well, by doing good.” n
