It’s a busy time for the cleaning industry, and as you’ll see in this bumper issue of Tomorrow’s Cleaning, it’s all thanks to two very important events: The Manchester Cleaning Show and Interclean Amsterdam. First up is the second biennial Manchester Cleaning Show, which takes place at Event City, next to the Trafford Centre, on 11 – 12 April 2018. Inside our Show Guide this issue you’ll find all the information you could possibly need: a preview from the British Cleaning Council, company information and listings, an up-todate seminar schedule, and a floorplan. We’ve also got a Preview of Interclean Amsterdam 2018, with some insight into what’s going on in different areas of the shows, what seminars and events will be taking place, along with listings and an in-depth look into the Healthcare Cleaning Forum, which takes place alongside Interclean on Wednesday 16 May. If that somehow wasn’t enough, we also hear from The Preparation Group about how to pick the perfect vacuum for the job, whilst TASKI makes a big noise about quiet vacuums. The winners of the Kimberly-Clark Professional Golden Service Awards 2018 have been announced, and we reveal the winners of the Tomorrow’s Cleaning Awards 2018. Thank you very much for reading, and I hope you enjoy the issue!

AND THE W

Voting for the Tomorrow’s Cleaning Awards 2018 cam reveal to you who came a In the final week of 2017, we were proud to publically unveil the shortlist for the 2018 Tomorrow’s Cleaning Awards – a collection of the best products and services from across the industry that had graced our pages over the previous 12 months. Covering as broad a spectrum as possible, with everything from the latest software solutions to chemical dispensers and robots, we like to believe that our annual awards act as a showcase for the cream of the crop that this industry has to offer, but in the end it was down to you, dear readers, to pick your winners. Over the past three months, we’ve been keeping an eye on the voting numbers, seeing the top spots chop and change over the course of the voting period, and trying to predict who would eventually come out on top. It was very close right through to the end, with only a handful of votes separating the top few spaces. However, now that voting has closed and the thousands of votes that we’ve had have been counted and verified, we’re delighted to announce our winners.

CORRUPT COUNCILLOR COPS TO CLEANING CONTRACT CON Melton Borough Council’s former housing asset manager, Richard Whitmore, has been jailed for dishonestly awarding his wife’s cleaning firm a £150,000 contract. www.tomorrowscleaning.com

For abusing his position of trust, Whitmore was sentenced to 20 months in jail for awarding the fouryear contract to his wife’s firm. Jayne Whitmore, who was sentenced to 14 months in jail (suspended for two years), had set up Clean Jeans under the name ‘Jayne Adams’, complete with bogus work references and a different address on her business cards.

Mr. Whitmore was responsible for following up any references. Judge Nicholas Dean QC said: “It was corruption in its purest form, no doubt emanating from greed.” Both will face losing assets at an upcoming ‘proceeds of crime’ hearing, however Judge Dean stated that he would take into account that a cleaning service was in fact provided to the council.

This will ensure that accurate results of hand hygiene moments are captured. “We’re looking forward to working with RFiD Discovery to roll this system out across hospitals, which we believe will ensure a higher standard of hand hygiene behaviour and allow us to improve standards on a ward by ward basis.” www.debmedgroup.com

The floor was reportedly littered with mouse droppings, and food products were sodden with urine. Some packets of food had been returned to shelves after being gnawed through by rodents, with the holes ‘repaired’ by tape. A Croydon Crown Court judge said: “The smell of rodents’ urine was discernible upon immediate approach to the food section of the store.” Officers consulted with the shop’s management, who immediately ceased selling food at the store. Along with the rodent problem, the goods lift was out of commission, forcing staff members to manually carry goods up to the shop floor without a risk assessment. The store also had no hot water, inadequate heating and poor housekeeping. The store has since reopened.

ENGLAND PROPOSES PLASTIC BOTTLE DEPOSIT SCHEME England is planning to introduce a deposit scheme for single-use glass and plastic bottles, and steel and aluminium cans, subject to consultation. The move is a bid to cut waste and boost recycling, increasing prices and incentivising more responsible behaviour – a similar plan has been announced for Scotland, and Wales has launched a study to consider a deposit scheme. Similar schemes in northern Europe have led to a large increase in plastic recycling. Environment Secretary Michael Gove said: “We have already banned harmful microbeads and cut plastic bag use, and now we want to take action on plastic bottles to help clean up our oceans. We need to see a change in attitudes and behaviour. And the evidence shows that reward and return schemes are a powerful agent of change.” However, the industry is concerned about the price tag, and that it may be asked to foot the bill for the scheme. Plastics producers currently pay just 10% of the cost of packaging recycling. Councils will also want to ensure kerbside collecting isn’t undercut by the deposit process. twitter.com/TomoCleaning

CROMWELL CELEBRATES LONGTERM EMPLOYEES Cromwell Polythene is celebrating a succession of staff members who have reached their 10 or 20 year anniversaries with the company. Cromwell believes the length of service of many of its employees is testament to the vision and values of the company. This vision is to supply products that are not only lower cost to the customer, but also the environment. Six members of staff have reached at least 10 years with the company: Dean Roper (13 years), Paul Kendal and Mark Robinson (12 years each), Alex Lewis (11 years), and Richard Rowling and Leigh Winckles (10 years each). Many progressed their careers with Cromwell. Dean began as a warehouse operative, moved on to be a warehouse supervisor, then a despatch assistant, a purchasing assistant, and is currently a buyer. Amanda Briscall began life at Cromwell Polythene as assistant to the Managing Director and is now his PA, having spent 16 years with the company. As well as contracts and tenders, Amanda controls quality and leads the team responsible for upholding standards like the CHSA Refuse Sack Standard.

Kevin Marshall, Craig Jackson and Paul Fleetwood have all reached an even more impressive landmark, with 20 years’ service each this year. Paul Fleetwood said: “I started my journey with Cromwell Polythene as a sales administrator and I am now national accounts director. It has gone so quickly, in fact I thought it was only 19 years! In my time at Cromwell I have travelled the UK, Europe, and Far East meeting interesting, enthusiastic, committed suppliers and customers. Friends that are as passionate about the companies they own or work for as I am about working for Cromwell.” James Lee, Cromwell Polythene’s Managing Director, said: “It’s been a long, slow burn but after so many years our business is now thriving, and that is largely down to the commitment, dedication and talent of the hardworking staff. We’re a family business: my wife, Debbie, is a fellow Director and sons Henry (Business Development Manager) and Angus (Office Manager) also work here, but it feels much more like an extended family, thanks to everyone else working around us. I’ve watched so many people grow and develop, personally and professionally, over the years and I’m proud that we can all share in Cromwell Polythene’s success.”

WHAT’S AHEAD?

Torben Lund Andersen, Head of Technology Development and Autonomy at Nilfisk, looks at the key trends driving the current and future development of professional floor cleaning. It’s no easy task working in the commercial cleaning industry. As an owner, there is a need to secure the right equipment, reduce costs, and exceed customer expectations. As an operator, there is a need to constantly improve productivity, enhance safety and protect the environment. And today, more than ever, there is a need to have a firm grasp on new technologies – understanding what is available, recognising which technologies will best serve their customers, and knowing how to use those technologies to their fullest potential. While the cleaning industry has not historically been recognised for its innovation, today’s most desired and high performing cleaning equipment does, in fact, include technological advancements that benefit cleaning professionals, facility managers, employees and building owners alike. The following are just a few of the technologies that are positively disrupting the cleaning industry.

26 | COVER STORY

WATER AND SOLUTION SYSTEMS While neither disc nor orbital floor scrubbers are new to the cleaning industry, the systems that control and regulate water usage as well as the technologies that power the scrub deck itself continue to evolve to improve cleanliness, safety, sustainability, and operator productivity.

Using excess water when scrubbing is simply wasteful and presents a safety hazard, and using too much chemical is environmentally unsound. Having to make multiple passes and repeatedly stop to dump and fill a solution or recovery tank is time-consuming. But today’s more advanced scrubbing technologies allow the operator to automatically switch between chemical-free, water-only, or varying degrees of detergent use; change down pressure; change flow rates based on machine speed; and rotate an entire orbital scrub deck.

As a result, operators can effortlessly transition between different floor types and address varying degrees of traffic and dirt patterns; improve productivity by reducing dump and fill cycles as well as multiple cleaning passes; and deliver more consistently clean floors. Ensuring an operator has as many of these technologies as possible on one machine further heightens their ability to clean effectively, productively and safely.

AUTONOMOUS EQUIPMENT

As with many new technologies, groundbreaking work was done in the military that has laid the groundwork for commercialising driverless cleaning machines. Take the mapping technology from the military, and add the increased capabilities for computing power in a smaller footprint made possible by smartphones, and combine those with lower cost optics and sensors, and you have the recipe for autonomous cleaning. twitter.com/TomoCleaning

Without question, robotics offers the potential to help owners overcome the never-ending struggle to increase productivity while reducing costs. But autonomy, which elevates robotics from mechanical cleaning to independent operation, also addresses the need to improve the level of clean.

“By gathering data from the battery, operators are able to replace or repair before a failure occurs.” By combining state-of-the-art optics with cutting edge navigation and operation software, an autonomous machine – as we know it today – provides the operator with the freedom to address higher level cleaning tasks, such as break rooms, windows and stairways that might otherwise be overlooked. So by adding autonomous equipment as an ‘extra member of the cleaning crew’ it is not a question of man vs. machine, but rather a man-machine collaboration – where repetitive cleaning tasks can be carried out by autonomous machines in order to free up resources for the operators. By restructuring how the cleaning crew operates it is possible to harness the full potential of autonomous cleaning.

CONNECTED CLEANING Data drives business decisions in every sector of the economy, and leveraging data is now a business tool within the commercial cleaning industry as well.

Connected cleaning is the automatic measurement and transfer of data. Data measured today includes information about where a machine is currently located, who is operating the machine, what a machine was programmed to do, if a machine is operating optimally, how many minutes a machine ran, and how much water and/or detergent a machine used. The raw data has limited value for the individual operator. However, once analysed, the data can be used to document when and for how long www.tomorrowscleaning.com

the cleaning was carried out, giving owners and operators the ability to better measure labour and validate cleaning compliance. At the same time the data enables operators to perform ‘predictive maintenance’. For instance by gathering data from the battery of the machine, operators are able to replace or repair the battery before a failure occurs and hereby avoid machine downtime. So in essence the first fleet management systems which are currently available on the market are able to monitor machine usage and allow owners and operators to make decisions based on facts. This will be for many a significant first step towards optimising their cleaning program and ultimately lower the total cost of clean. However a significant development within fleet management is taking place and the intelligent use of data is evolving radically. Now, not only can a machine communicate with an operator or owner via computers, phones and tablets, but the building itself can. Infrared cameras and optical sensors placed in a room have the ability to relay information on traffic patterns and usage rates.

This kind of interconnectivity between a building’s rooms, its cleaning staff, and its cleaning equipment has the potential to dramatically influence operator productivity and cleaning efficacy by arming operators with the knowledge necessary to be proactive rather than reactive; to plan cleaning routes; and to focus time, resources and equipment on providing the appropriate level of clean. Already now, we are seeing the first examples of ‘intelligent office buildings’ where data from the car park is connected to the number of plates prepared in the canteen and where traffic patterns and data is intelligently used to control the heating and ventilation in the building. So by tapping into various data sources and combining this with machine data, operators and owners will be able to plan and predict the need for cleaning. Just as technology has revolutionised how consumers communicate, shop and wash, it has revolutionised how cleaning operators and owners deliver the cleanest and safest floors in the most productive way possible. And as with consumer technology, the best is likely yet to come. nilfisk.co.uk

A PRICE WORTH PAYING

The British Cleaning Council’s Deputy Chair Paul Thrupp discusses the Apprenticeship Levy, and suggests the real cost to cleaning will be if the sector doesn’t support it. The introduction of the Apprenticeship Levy last April means that many businesses within the cleaning industry, who are required to pay the levy, now have a committed training and development budget which they can use to enhance the competencies and skills of their staff. Proper use of the levy funds can provide an investment in workforce development whilst also enabling the adoption of best practice management techniques and unlocking a culture of innovation. It can also help spur firms on to find sustainable solutions for the future. With proper planning, the levy funds can also be used to help underpin your entire future strategy for the development and success of both your business and, ultimately, the wider cleaning industry. There are other benefits as well. Many employers across different industries point out how the apprenticeships create a ‘win win’ for the employer and employee. This is based on the belief that staff are likely to stay ‘loyal’ to an employer who has invested in them, and where experienced colleagues have taken time out of their own busy work schedules to help them learn and develop.

28 | REGULAR

Of course, this means that they can learn on the job, rather than having to try and put into practice something they have been taught off-site. Also external training can often be based on hypothetical scenarios which bear little relation to the actual work you do, so the value is diminished.

“Many employers across different industries point out how the apprenticeships create a ‘win win’ for the employer and employee.” Further, it is well documented that investment in the skills and development of our teams results in increased productivity, less absence, fewer health and safety issues and an increased feeling of belonging. It improves and enriches company culture, improves wellbeing and boosts workplace morale. There are a wide range of specific areas where apprenticeships can impact positively on the cleaning industry. These include health, safety and risk

management, hospitality, literacy and numeracy, and project management. As an example, within the Federation of Window Cleaners who I also represent, we are currently exploring the options of a full window cleaning apprenticeship which includes not only the practical skills associated with the correct techniques for cleaning glass and other surfaces, but also includes knowledge, training and competency in a range of specialisms. From risk assessments to working with telescopic poles, working at height to bookkeeping, PPE to pure water technology, the training programme we’re hoping to develop will be calibrated to meet the requirements of today’s window cleaning industry. And if we get it right, the next generation of window cleaners will be equipped with the skills and experience required to enter full time work as the finished article, not a trainee. Quite simply whether you are in the cleaning industry or not, and whether you must pay the Apprenticeship Levy or not, supporting the concept of apprenticeships is for me a genuine no-brainer. Invest in your team now, and benefit for a long time in the future. www.britishcleaningcouncil.org twitter.com/TomoCleaning

THE COST OF COMPENSATION

Lee Andrews, CEO of DOC Cleaning, reports on the abolition of employment tribunal fees: is this a positive or negative development for our industry? In July 2017, following a ruling by the Supreme Court, the government abolished Employment Tribunal (ET) fees. During the four years after the fees were introduced in 2013, the number of cases brought to ET had dropped by around 70%, raising the question as to whether the growth of a compensation culture had been duly stifled, or whether the opposite was happening and justice was no longer being served. Interestingly, it is rumoured that the introduction of these fees in the first place was designed mainly to fund the running costs of the system, rather than to influence people’s likelihood of claiming. It’s also suggested that when the unions lobbied for the fees to be removed, they were actually after a reduction, rather than outright removal – the fees had ranged for £150 for a simple loss of wages to £1200 for unfair dismissal. So maybe the solution actually overcompensated for the problem? Either way, the changes have taken effect and it is reported that in the first quarter after re-introduction, claims rose by 64% compared to the previous year – in other words, ‘normal service’ has resumed. The downside for contract cleaning is that we seem to attract more than our fair share of ET claims. As anyone who’s been through the experience will know, a claim is usually a no-win situation for the contractor, even if defended successfully. The costs of legal representation, added to the time spent preparing the case and giving evidence in court, often outweigh any potential award, making it cheaper to settle out of court. Disgruntled

employees and their advisors are only too well aware of this of course. So where do we go from here?

IS THE CLEANING INDUSTRY PARTICULARLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO ET CLAIMS? I think the answer here is yes for three main reasons. First, as an industry we have difficulty with TUPE – there are too many cases where TUPE is either not correctly interpreted and applied, or staff information is not honestly disclosed, resulting in unfair dismissal claims. The second is the very high ratio of frontline staff as compared to the number of managers trained to apply HR practice correctly, leading to more HR ‘accidents’. The third is that a fairly low percentage of cleaning contractors can actually afford to employ dedicated HR staff, so will either outsource to consultants, or try and deal with issues in-house, sometimes less effectively than is needed, which results in the inevitable claim or settlement. The problem is, it only takes two or three staff out of the hundreds employed to ‘have a go’ and all of a sudden resources can be severely stretched.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO STOP CLAIMS HAPPENING?

One answer would be to re-introduce a fee, along with a means-tested system of fee remission, that ensures access to justice, but discourages someone from taking a shot at their employer on a ‘something for nothing’ basis. Of course this is not going to happen in the near future, but it may be something for the powers that be in our industry to add to their lobbying list? An easier step for us all to take, however, is to address the root causes. Firstly, that means ensuring smaller companies have access to proper guidance on TUPE – how about our industry developing a library of case studies that could be accessed by any contractor, or indeed employee? Secondly, and most importantly, it means working harder at staff engagement. By this, I mean setting out standards of behaviour clearly in contracts or staff handbooks, creating an atmosphere where staff do not see the world of work as ‘them and us’, and training management to apply best practice in dealing with disciplinary and grievance issues when they do inevitably occur. It’s always said that people work better when they know where they stand, and if that means we can head off the re-emergence of the energy sapping event that is the employment tribunal claim, then it’s surely worth aspiring to. www.doccleaning.co.uk

A JOB WORTH DOING | 33

WAKING UP TO EMPLOYEE WELFARE New Jangro CEO, Joanne Gilliard, discusses how improving welfare conditions and investing in training can reduce staff turnover and bring business benefits.

The services provided by cleaning operatives are essential to organisational success, as they are vital in maintaining healthy and hygienic spaces. However, cleaners are often held in low regard. Together with the hard – and often hazardous – work, low pay and seeming lack of prospects, there is frequently little long-term commitment to the industry. Reducing staff turnover has clear business benefits: after all, recruitment takes up valuable time and money. As an industry, we need to help create and maintain an atmosphere of respect and appreciation for the work undertaken by cleaning operatives. We also have to change the perception of their job from one of being a series of mundane tasks to a critical part of any business.

TRAINING

Training is important in any industry, but absolutely vital in the cleaning business. Not only will employees feel valued as you’re investing in them, but well-trained employees will also work efficiently, cost-effectively and to a high standard. It’s a win-win situation. Our industry relies on migrant labour more heavily than other economic sectors, and workers across the business are also more likely to hold lower levels of qualifications. This means that training must be delivered in a form that is easy to understand, and that can bypass potential language barriers so that the operative can perform their duties safely without risking their own – or others’ – health. There are many quality training schemes available – at Jangro we offer a free e-learning system, which is accessible to all of our customers and their employees. We recently introduced Task Cards to the programme, which are perfect for on-the-go learning. Short highly visual cleaning guides, they are ideal when English is not the first language, or as a refresher on how to perform

34 | EXPERT ADVICE

particular tasks correctly, e.g. how to clean a toilet.

REASSURANCE FOR LONE WORKERS

It’s not unusual for operatives to work alone as most cleaning is done outside normal working hours. The first step in protecting lone workers is to undertake a risk assessment to determine potential hazards. The second is to review working patterns – is it possible to avoid situations where staff work alone, e.g. by working across a facility as a team instead of being allocated to different floors of a building? It is also worth considering the introduction of ‘daytime cleaning’ if clients are amenable. This prevents both physical and social isolation, and allows the rest of the workforce to understand more about cleaners’ roles and express their appreciation. In cases where lone working cannot be avoided, a simple way to provide reassurance is to set up a buddy system, allowing lone workers to tell a colleague where they will be and agree to phone at a certain time. Alternatively, take advantage of today’s technology,

such as a dedicated speed dial on a mobile phone which links through to an alarm response centre, or a smartphone app that includes the ability to set up automatic welfare checks.

MONEY, MONEY, MONEY A hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay. Cleaning operatives should be paid an hourly rate which reflects their hard work and the value they bring to the business. This should not translate into piece work, which is effectively paid at a lower overall rate. This was the case in the recent Channel 4 exposé, where cleaners at a hotel chain were reportedly required to complete a certain number of rooms no matter how long it took, but were only paid for their basic hours.

In all cases, transparent pay slips should be provided with clear pay calculations. Paying a fair wage, taking measures to ensure security, and providing reassurance and training is not only good for the individual, but it’s also good for business. The result? Better outcomes, greater loyalty, and higher staff retention. www.jangro.net twitter.com/TomoCleaning

GOING DIGITAL

Christian Berenger, Managing Director of Ezitracker Remote Workforce Management Technology, looks at how SME cleaning service providers can drive the sector forward through streamlining. A recent review of the available accounts for 22 facilities management firms with operations in the UK revealed that the average (EBITDA) margins have remained stagnant at around 7% during the last three years. In comparison, revenues grew at an average of 14% from last year. The forecast came shortly before the collapse of the support services giant Carillion. Since the collapse, the government has announced that it is to launch a ÂŁ12bn tender for cleaning and maintenance services at schools, hospitals and in other public buildings. The move is part of the government's aim to give a third of public sector work to SMEs by 2020. SMEs within the FM sector will hugely benefit from using remote workforce management software when it comes to tendering to win more of these public sector contracts. The digital work world that we live in has meant that the facilities management and cleaning environment has become highly competitive. With decreasing margins, service providers have had to adapt their proposition to deliver enhanced efficiencies as clients seek suppliers that offer better value for money, digital innovations and accurate management information and analytics.

36 | FEATURE

In addition, the facilities management sector is, by its nature, extremely fragmented due to the variety of services offered such as security, building and grounds maintenance, and cleaning. We are seeing a high number of recent SME entrants, particularly focused on cleaning, which has created even further pricing pressure. Delivering a site-based facilities contract is costly and managing hundreds of remote workers on multiple sites can be a huge challenge. Mobile workforce management technology has been largely embraced by the UK FM sector as an essential aspect of business processes. Administration tasks such as payroll, budgeting, staff scheduling and analytics are all made less cumbersome by understanding where staff are, and for how long they are there. Inevitable client questions about the timing of their cleanings can be easily answered as clients benefit from real time analytics, which provide vital contract compliance verification. Progression in technology is driving innovation, facilitating a shift for cleaning contractors. The prevalence of new, cloud-based technologies such as workforce management software has made it significantly easier for FM service twitter.com/TomoCleaning

operations managers to verify attendance and eliminates the need for paper timesheets, thereby streamlining payroll reporting. A massive reduction in the administrative burden of paper timesheets can result in substantial savings in payroll processing, including the elimination of time sheet fraud, reduction in payroll overpayments, discrepancies, disputes and time spent on supervision.

“Progression in technology is driving innovation, facilitating a shift for cleaning contractors.” Exciting IoT (Internet of Things) innovations, from smart watches and other wearable technology to GPSenabled shoes, will allow the concept of ‘Smart Facilities Management’ to become the standard. FM service providers using this workforce management technology will drive the sector forward by streamlining processes, encouraging higher levels of productivity and boosting long-term profitability. This technology, which sits behind the scenes, can make cleaning businesses win more contracts, make the mundane tasks automated, and the complex issues simple.

providers to manage teams of staff across multiple sites remotely, whilst bringing cost savings and adding to the bottom line. Smartphone and mobile technology are delivering added value and more and more in-app communication tools are becoming available for mobile workforces to log completed tasks. This means that contract compliance checks can happen in real-time, remotely. Knowledge is power. Cleaning providers employ large numbers of site-based workers and nowadays they have a need to provide proof of service provision to their own clients. There is a need for attendance verification and actual evidence of time spent at a client’s premises providing contracted services. The sector is also under increasing pressure to provide accountability for, and safeguarding remote workers. This, coupled with tighter service level agreements, means that ensuring that staff are on-site, as planned, is critical. Modern time and attendance technology enables

www.tomorrowscleaning.com

Having full, real-time visibility of staff attendance and punctuality is key. Time and attendance data can be captured using either a landline, mobile phone, or another workforce monitoring device. The data is then sent in real time, so Managers can get a clear picture of which staff are where and when, receive immediate alerts for late arrivals, no-shows and early leavers, and act fast to minimise service disruption. Remote worker technology helps with many health and safety and compliance issues: Working Time Directive compliance, ensuring remote workers are kept safe and evidence that Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are being met. An integrated Workforce Management System will include scheduling, payroll and invoice reporting so that employees can be allocated, pay rates assigned and payroll extracts can be produced. Seamless integration to existing rostering and payroll systems means that tailored reports can be created quickly and easily. The technology significantly reduces potential for fraud and timekeeping disputes as it enables payroll managers to compare actual hours worked against planned hours, therefore significantly reducing the chance of over-payments. The team at Ezitracker will be on hand at the Manchester Cleaning Show (Stand A11) to demonstrate the value of the solution. www.ezitracker.com

A QUIET REVOLUTION

Silence is golden, but TASKI is making a big racket about their progress eliminating vacuum noise. More and more vacuum models are significantly quieter than those they have been replacing, while reducing energy consumption and introducing other features to ensure greater efficiency and lower overall operating costs. This makes them ideal for a wide range of routine, daytime and emergency cleaning applications where cleaning teams need excellent performance, economy and convenience. The new TASKI AERO tub vacuum cleaner is believed to be the quietest and most energy-efficient machine currently available on the professional cleaning market, according to Diversey. The four models in the range produce only 53dB(A) of sound and utilise just 585W of electrical power in standard mode yet produce as much cleaning suction as machines rated at 1000W or more. In ‘eco’ mode they produce just 50dB(A) and consume a mere 295W. On energy savings alone, they can pay for themselves in less than three years. The range’s eight and 15 litre tank capacity models meet demand for vacuums that comply with the stringent sound and energy limits specified in EU Regulations EU665/2013 and EU666/2013, which came into force in September 2017. The TASKI AERO vacuum’s revolutionary design ensures the maximum amount of air is used to create suction at the cleaning head. By redesigning the machine’s internal airways, TASKI engineers eliminated the constrictions and points of leakage that reduce efficiency and produce unnecessary noise. Newly designed components and ultra-efficient electric motors further boost efficiency and cut noise. This combination of patented designs and components is called ‘whisper technology’. As well as ergonomic design, the TASKI AERO offers a number of features, such as a foot pedal switch, and a high quality accessory set as standard. Its clever design ensures that replacing parts – such as cables and filters – is quick and easy, and can be carried out by the user in seconds without the need for any tools. The compact design makes it efficient for storage in small spaces or cupboards. The

38 | VACUUMS & SWEEPERS

integrated handle also makes it very easy to carry, while doubling as a simple and convenient manual cable tidy. Cleaning teams who require a highly portable vacuum can specify the versatile and soon-to-be-released TASKI BackPack model, available in electric and lithium battery versions. These compact and ergonomic backpack vacuums are among the lightest and smallest machines of their type on the market, enabling comfortable and efficient use in busy, confined and congested areas. This makes them ideal for applications in hospitals, restaurants, cinemas or theatres. Their portability is also ideal when rapid turnaround is essential, such as cleaning aircraft, trains and buses. The TASKI BackPack is available in mains or, for maximum portability, rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery powered versions. The battery model’s continuous runtime of more than 30 minutes reduces downtime and maximises productivity. Rapid recharging, during breaks for example, helps maximise availability. Noise levels are less than 64dB(A) for the battery and 69dB(A) for the mains powered models, quieter than most competitor machines and well below the new EU Directive’s requirements. The electric version is rated at 700W, using less power than most competitor models while producing more airflow to deliver better cleaning suction. Energy rated at A+ and with excellent performance, the TASKI BackPack aims to set the benchmark for all other manufacturers to compare against. The TASKI AERO and TASKI BackPack vacuums are part of a complete range of ergonomic and efficient floorcare machines from Diversey. In addition to these vacuums, the range includes upright vacuum models, scrubber driers for every application and size of site, single-disc rotary cleaners, and carpet cleaning machines for all routine, intermittent and deep cleaning tasks. www.taski.com twitter.com/TomoCleaning

HIGH-POWER SOLUTIONS The industrial division of ECOBAT Battery Technologies (EBT) boasts one milestone after another, to provide the cleaning sector with the complete solution for its power storage requirements.

Cleaning machine manufacturers, suppliers, rental companies or direct purchasers have one thing in common,: the need for immediate access to a replacement should the machine’s existing battery fail. With an unrivalled stock holding capability and a broad range of premium quality brands, including TAB, Sonnenschein, US Battery and Lucas, EBT Industrial provides the lifeline to deliver, and if necessary, install a substitute in the fastest possible time, therefore having the least impact on the machine’s downtime. Alongside batteries, another vital ingredient for efficient machine operation is not simply a charger, but a charge regime that delivers the most efficient charging period, extended battery life and a reduction in energy consumption. To achieve these multiple objectives EBT Industrial also supplies a range of chargers including SPE and Fronius that enable it to select the most appropriate unit for the application. In addition to these core components, EBT Industrial has a wealth of power storage knowledge and expertise and a team of service engineers able to visit, access, advise and support its customers, to ensure the battery/charger combination precisely fits the requirements and delivers the necessary performance for each and every application. Add into the mix a 13-branch network in locations from Scotland and North Wales, down to Bristol and across to Essex, which is able to provide a truly national service, and all the ingredients are in place to deliver the highest possible level of premium quality products and accessories, backed up with the best in customer service.

TECHNOLOGY FOR TECHNOLOGY’S SAKE?

Specialist knowledge allows the EBT Industrial team to cut through the hyperbole and to get to the facts to ensure the most appropriate solution is found for any particular application, and this insight is vital for considering what is now one of the industry’s ‘in vogue’ products – lithium batteries. There is no question that lithium batteries are an impressive piece of technology, but there remain some serious question marks, particularly concerning their cost and environmental credentials, over their suitability for the floor cleaning

www.tomorrowscleaning.com

sector and whether they really are the most appropriate replacement solution. On the other hand, traditional gel monoblocs, in some applications, no longer achieve the performance requirements, so is there an alternative?

THE THIRD WAY

Bridging the gap, there is now a realistic, lead-acid alternative, a solution that delivers the power and deep cycle capability of lithium, with similar ‘real-world’ recharging periods, but at a significantly reduced cost. The answer is Lead Crystal. Lead Crystal provides a genuine alternative because it is high performing and resilient, able to be discharged deeper, cycled more often and recover to full rated capacity over and over again, therefore delivering a prolonged service life. The technology incorporated uses pure lead, high-purity calcium selenium plates and a safe silicon dioxide (SiO2) electrolyte solution that solidifies into a white crystalline powder when charged/discharged. The environmental credentials of Lead Crystal are also a formidable challenge to lithium, which is a complex and, as yet, not fully-costed problem. By contrast, Lead Crystal contains no acid, no cadmium, no antimony and is 99% recyclable and classified as non-hazardous goods for transport. EBT Industrial is now able to offer a wide range of Lead Crystal batteries, which are suitable for multiple cleaning machine applications. These sit alongside its existing product range and when fused with the company’s extensive expertise and high quality associated accessories, provide the cleaning industry with the ultimate battery solution. www.ecobat.tech

VACUUMS & SWEEPERS | 41

VACUUM PACKED

Here, The Preparation Group looks at how to pick the right vacuum for a situation, whether you’re after dust, liquids of hazardous materials. When selecting a vacuum, it’s important to look for robust, durable, steel models that feature high filtration standards and high airflow. The chosen dust extraction must also match the operation that it is to be used for. To safely contain dust in dustsensitive environments or in dealing with hazardous airborne particles, The Preparation Group offers three vacuum models and a pre-separator that feature Longopac Safe Bagging Systems, eliminating the need to empty a ‘bin’ as found on conventional dust extraction units. Instead, debris is collected into a continuous feeding bag which is then twisted and sealed by the operator into manageable bags for disposal. There is a two-motor 202DSLP vacuum, three-motor M450LP vacuum as well as a 202DS Atex model, which is Category Zone 22 rated for use in food, pharmaceutical and petrochemical environments. The Longopac Pre-separator connects to another industrial vacuum to yield even greater suction and dust containment properties. This unit is particularly popular with specialist asbestos contractors to avoid handling of material during the removal processes. With a Preseparator, the system can be used for long range projects, i.e. at high level multi-storey buildings, with the preparation equipment and Preseparator on the working floor and the industrial vacuum at ground level, up to 150 metres away. This eradicates the handling of any contaminated materials and, if planned and executed correctly, ensures that no hazardous materials will enter the atmosphere.

SELECTING A FILTER

When removing airborne particles, it is important to select the correct vacuum filter. There are three main types; L, M and H (low, medium and high). Medium Class Filters are general purpose suitable for standard operations. A vacuum must be fitted

42 | VACUUMS & SWEEPERS

CASE STUDY: ASBESTOS with an L or M type filter in order to correctly function, but can also be fitted with an additional H grade filter for collecting very fine, asbestoscontaining particle dust. A vacuum fitted with an H filter is by definition an H-type Vacuum and should have an ‘H’ sticker on it. To double check that one is fitted, take the head off the vacuum to confirm that there are two filters inside, one will be an H filter.

DRY/WET VS WET/DRY

When there is a need to vacuum both dry and wet materials, there are dual purpose dry/wet industrial models on the market such as the M450 that effectively remove both, without the need to change the filter system. The dry/wet vacuum’s filter is specially designed yet is equally effective at dealing with slurry. Wet/dry vacuums are primarily designed to deal with liquids but can be used on dust, so they don’t share the same high levels of dust particle containment and can clog. www.thepreparationgroup.com

The Preparation Group’s contracting division, PPC, were contracted to remove floor adhesive containing traces of asbestos from a block of council flats in Huddersfield, which were due for demolition. The building comprised of 10 floors and equipment had to be manually lifted to each level as the lift had been disabled. The company’s 250 Grinder fitted with a PCD (Polycrystalline Diamond) Plate was used, with 9” hand grinders fitted with PCD discs employed to complete the edges. Debris and fine dust particles were collected safely by an M450LP Longopac industrial vacuum fitted with an ‘H’ grade filter, and the contaminated material was contained in special asbestos bags. The total area of 1,413m2 took six days to complete. The contaminated material represented a small percentage of the overall structure so by disposing of this element separately, it meant that the whole building was not classed as contaminated waste, thus reducing environmental impact and costs. twitter.com/TomoCleaning

TALK OF THE TOWN

What will the cleaning industry be talking about at the Manchester Cleaning Show 2018? The British Cleaning Council (BCC) investigates. With the second Manchester Cleaning Show nearly upon us, we asked some BCC members, conference speakers and trade exhibitors what they will be highlighting over the two-day event. They include the Association of Building Cleaning Direct Service Providers (ABCD), the association for managers of local authority cleaning and support services and their suppliers.

3

Pat Wherton, the ABCD’s General Secretary, said: “In EXTENDED the last thirty years local authority cleaning services WARRANTY have faced many challenges, and more recently these have come from austerity measures following the 2008 financial crisis, when many Councils contracted their services out in cost saving exercises as a strategy to deal with the squeeze on public spending. “Also, the introduction of Academy status for schools, which has resulted in many deciding to either contract out or employ their own cleaning staff, and not use the services of the Councils any more, has had an impact. “We therefore need to ensure that the wider cleaning sector continues to understand the unique nature of local authority cleaning services, which is why we’ll be promoting our work at the forthcoming Manchester Cleaning Show.”

Joining Pat on the BCC’s stand will be Stephen Munton, founder of the Domestic Cleaning Alliance (DCA). The DCA is the UK trade association working exclusively for the domestic cleaning industry. Stephen said: “The DCA is delighted to be exhibiting on the BCC stand because domestic cleaning is a part of the cleaning industry which is off the radar in many ways. EXTENDED

His session is entitled ‘The facilities sector in post-Brexit Britain’ and will focus on what cleaning and FM companies are doing to prepare for Brexit, and what contingency plans are being put in place, both from a contractor and end-user perspective.

Dominic said: “Whether we like it or not, Brexit is one of Europe's defining geopolitical events of the decade, if not the century. It will affect all of us, directly and indirectly, and whilst the wrangling between the EU and UK continues for the next year, it is important we take steps now to prepare for the day when Brexit finally arrives. “The cleaning and facilities sector will be one of the most heavily affected by Brexit, and it seems most of us have either 'switched off' when it comes to Brexit, or done little or nothing to prepare.”

Exhibitors returning to Manchester after the show’s successful 2016 debut include Manchester-based Floorbrite Cleaning & Facilities Services. Floorbrite’s Marketing Director Nina Wyers said: “In its debut year in 2016 our experience surpassed our expectations. Our stand with a seven-strong team struggled to cope with demand at times but it was a great opportunity to reinforce new and existing client and supplier relationships and to showcase our full portfolio of services.”

Another presentation will be given by Richard Bond, from Manchester-based PR agency SKV Communications. Richard leads on the British Cleaning Council’s media relations and will be giving a talk called ‘Getting your message across’, which will focus on effective business to business communications. Richard said: “Two years ago SKV pitched BBC Breakfast to look at covering The Cleaning Show and ended up with Steph McGovern coming along for a live morning broadcast. But while securing national broadcast coverage is fantastic, I’ll be talking about how cleaning firms can work their trade PR opportunities a bit harder on a day-to-day basis. “I’ll also be sharing some insights I’ve gained working across a number of different B2B sectors over the last 20 years, and will be passing on a few tips regarding how you can maximise your communications in both traditional and social media.”

Another business returning to exhibit at the Event City venue is cleaning equipment specialists T.L. Killis, from Sheffield. Managing Director, Tibor Killis, said: “Since we last attended The Manchester Cleaning Show in 2016, Killis has been very busy extending its product range and securing contracts with suppliers who are also committed to sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions. “For example, we have developed a larger version of our award winning iMop and have created a battery powered iGum chewing gum removal cleaner. There will also be our new C5 battery powered vacuum cleaner on display, and we will be demonstrating how all of these pieces of kit can be powered using the same charging system. “Manchester will also see us revealing more details of our recent partnership with the Canadian-based sanitation specialists Tersano Lotus Pro, who are global leaders in smart sanitation systems. “Visitors to our stand will be able to find more about their incredible breakthroughs in the production of stabilised aqueous ozone (SAO), which the simplest, safest, most sustainable way to clean. They can also try out the iClean mini Tersano Unit which we recently launched.” www.britishcleaningcouncil.org

SMARTTASK C11

SmartTask, the provider of employee scheduling and mobile workforce management solutions, will be showcasing a new vetting and onboarding module at the Manchester Cleaning Show. SmartTask Vetting has been designed to ensure that preemployment screening and background checking are not being overlooked, while following a consistent and approved process.

DENIS RAWLINS D27

Visitors to Manchester are being invited to think afresh about the returns they achieve on cleaning as Denis Rawlins Ltd shares its philosophy of ‘return on innovation’. The Sutton Coldfield cleaning consultant and equipment supplier specialises in identifying new systems and techniques that produce both superior cleaning results and a faster return on investment. Two products showcased on the Rawlins Stand D27 embody these principles: REN Clean, for manual

www.tomorrowscleaning.com

By systemising and streamlining vetting procedures, the management tool will allow cleaning businesses to create multiple role-based standards in line with the contractual expectations of new and existing clients. This will enable them to safely offer a range of personnel dependent on the nature of a location and required security clearance. Paul Ridden, CEO of SmartTask, explained: “We have developed the module in conjunction with a number of service providers with varying vetting requirements. Whether you require the BS7858 vetting standard

cleaning of escalators, and SpaceVac, for high-level cleaning from ground level. James White, MD of Denis Rawlins, said: “Smarter innovation isn’t necessarily about the latest technology or mechanisation – but the evidence of actual cleaning results, costs and efficiency. Our exhibits empower non-specialist cleaning teams to complete challenging cleaning tasks more cost-effectively than the usual methods.” With REN Clean, one person can clean an escalator or travelator in minutes, using an engineered sponge pad that slots into the treads. When held against the comb plate, this automatically removes soils and grease from oncoming treads. The pads can be cleaned and reused, and

also incorporate cleaning solution and a system designed for cleaning risers. It avoids the cost, disruption and abrasive effects of more expensive, specialist cleaning equipment. SpaceVac, meanwhile, is a simple, safe and cost-effective way to clean at height without the need for powered access equipment or scaffolding. Using super-lightweight carbon-fibre poles and cleaning accessories, SpaceVac enables operators to clean up to 15 metres from ground level. An additional wireless videocam allows the operative – or a supervisor viewing a recording – to monitor results. Denis Rawlins Ltd offers free demonstrations of these and other cleaning solutions. www.rawlins.co.uk

The CHSA operates Accreditation Schemes for distributors and for manufacturers of soft tissue, plastic refuse sacks and industrial cotton mops, each of which is supported by a rigorous and independent auditing process.

Enquiries: Vanessa VanSanten-Smith +44 1737 855041 • Michelle Andrews +44 1737 855086

Buyers of cleaning and hygiene products which carry the CHSA Accreditation Scheme marque can be confident ‘what’s on the box is what’s in the box’. Those selling products stamped with the CHSA Accreditation Scheme marque are offering their customers products which are uniquely underwritten by an independent inspection process. As well as being invited to join the relevant Accreditation Scheme, all members of the CHSA have to sign

the Association’s stringent Code of Practice. Gaining admittance to one of the CHSA’s Accreditation Schemes is challenging. Applicants must pass the initial audit of their product range and existing quality assurance processes conducted by the CHSA’s independent inspector. They are then audited frequently throughout the first year to ensure they maintain the standard that is required of them to maintain membership of one of the Schemes. Thereafter members are visited by the Independent Inspector repeatedly through each year, product being selected from both the warehouse and production line for inspection. www.chsa.co.uk

TEMPLA CMS C14

At the Manchester Cleaning Show, Templa will be showcasing various new features of its management software, each representing a hands-on solution to a real challenge encountered by cleaning contractors. Special Works Teams Management helps contractors who manage a significant volume of planned periodic work or ad hoc client requests using their own internal van fleet and specialist operatives. Resource allocation is fully optimised using a calendar-based scheduling tool which sends each job to an operative’s mobile device at the start of each working period. The functionality includes integrated employee pay and automated client billing. Standard 2-Way T&A Integration provides single point of data entry with real-time data exchange from a full range of on-site hardware technologies covering biometric and one-time password devices, through to a mobile app or SIM and client phones. Roster Management provides field managers with a drag and drop, calendar-based resource planning tool. It allows the planning of cover quickly

and easily, with any changes made to an employee’s schedule automatically updating all affected timesheets – current and future. Advanced Forms enables the design of bespoke electronic forms, e.g. employee new starter forms, which can be completed on a field manager’s mobile device before automatically synchronising with the central database, entering workflow for approval or action, and automating the creation of new records. Advanced Workbills improves profit reporting of periodic or special works by making provision for accrued

revenues and costs, as well as accurately allocating materials usage on jobs where they are used. This results in precise budget versus actual spend comparison and a discrete P&L report for each job. Franchise Network Support helps centralised cleaning franchisors manage their distributed franchisees’ access to relevant elements of the software. It takes care of data security and discrete processing, yet offers overarching franchisor management and reporting. www.templacms.co.uk twitter.com/TomoCleaning

KENNEDY HYGIENE F09

Kennedy Hygiene Products, manufacturer of the Ellipse range of dispensers, will be launching their new premium product line Satin Ellipse in Spring 2018, and are bringing it to the Manchester Cleaning Show 2018. The washroom plays a very important role in portraying the image of a business. Every part of the experience should enrich the visitor’s positive impression. Kennedy’s new range of satin chrome dispensers are the perfect choice for luxury washrooms, with their elegant design and superior functionality. Robust, timeless and luxurious, the range consists of hand washing, hand drying, toilet tissue, air freshening, sanitising and feminine hygiene units. Effectively the new range covers all hygiene environments including business, healthcare and hospitality

HOST VON SCHRADER F23

Making an appearance at the Manchester Cleaning Show 2018, the HOST carpet cleaning method is a unique all-in-one system that gets carpet clean and back in use straight away. The system uses especially designed equipment together with tailored HOST SPONGES. 80-90% of soil in a carpet is dry and is removed with a powerful vacuum fitted within the Freestyle or Liberator machine. Additionally, the counterrotating brushes in the machines ensure that the carpet pile is lifted and dry soil extracted from the base of the carpet. This all-important process must be successfully achieved before any moisture is applied to the carpet. www.tomorrowscleaning.com

facilities, enabling business owners to offer their clients a great experience. The dispensers are designed with the service specialist in mind and are prized for high quality, elegance, ease of service and ultimate hygiene. The satin chrome gives the dispensers their stainless-steel appearance and elegance. The durable lacquer finish eliminates visible fingerprints during use, resulting in simplified cleaning and maintenance, combined with a sleek and modern product design. The satin dispensers are made with quality consumables for luxury washrooms. The Spa Ellipse Satin is a fully programmable aerosol air freshener designed to satisfy the needs of both service professional and end user. The unit features unrestricted personalised settings with seven, 14, 20 or 30 minutes, 12 or 24-hour and five or seven day options available. Details such as the Spa’s large, angled easy-view LCD screen and intuitive software make

programming straightforward, while its unrestricted can usage range helps cut consumable costs. www.kennedy-hygiene.com

HOST SPONGES are a non abrasive organic cleaner containing a balanced mix of water, detergents, wetting agents and a safe to use solvent. It acts just like a sponge, releasing the cleaning agents where the soil is. The deep down brushing action allows the cleaner to break up, dissolve, trap and then remove spots, spills and greasy oily dirt. Finally, the powerful vacuum removes the HOST SPONGES with their trapped soil. HOST deep cleans so that spots are removed and don’t wick back. The deep cleaning HOST method ensures that harmful biological agents can be removed. In the US studies show that one cleaning with HOST reduces Dust Mites by 78%, Dust Mite Allergens by 75% and Mould Spores by 85%. Minimal amounts of moisture are used, so no over wetting and no lengthy drying time – carpets are back in use straightaway, clean, dry and looking their best. www.hostvonschrader.co.uk

THE SHOW OF SHOWS

Now just a month away, the biggest event on the cleaning industry calendar is almost upon us. Here, we take a special sneak peek at what to expect at this year’s Interclean Show... There’s nothing else like it, people say. It’s the cleaning industry’s main event, as almost a week of activity will enrapture more than 30,000 industry professionals. From the 15 – 18 May 2018, all eyes will be on Interclean Amsterdam 2018. The Amsterdam RAI will be packed to the rafters with all the latest and greatest innovations, from new products to new methodologies, from radical futuristic technologies to refined classics. Exhibitors will be arriving from as far afield as China, Australia, Mexico and the United States, as well as every corner of Europe and beyond. We’re delighted to be returning to the show, not just to report on the event from the show floor and bring you https://twitter.com/TomoCleaning updates via Twitter (@TomoCleaning) and Facebook, but we will also be exhibiting so you can meet the team: come visit us in Hall 01, stand 136. In this issue, you’ll find a handy Preview of the show, with some useful information about the event itself and some of the key exhibitors. Granted, we’ve not been able to speak to every single one of the hundreds of companies that will be exhibiting, but over the next few pages you’ll find a selection of the big names that’ll be sure to grab your attention during the week. Be sure to check back in May for our even larger Live Show Guide issue, as the excitement levels in TCHQ will well and truly hit fever pitch! Trade shows are widely seen as the ideal place to network and create new business connections, and Interclean Amsterdam is, of course, no exception. The four-day event offers the perfect opportunity to talk to prospective clients from all around the world, while also acting as a platform for thousands of new products to be launched into the marketplace. The organisers are this year starting a brand new innovation running alongside the main show: the Healthcare Cleaning Forum. Running only on Wednesday 16 May, the Forum is a compact program aiming to bridge the gap between the cleaning world and the realm of healthcare. With seminar sessions on the burden of hospital associated infections, education, staff safety, and the latest research, the forum will be a key focus for increasing patient safety and reducing antibiotic use. www.intercleanshow.com

WHAT’S ON?

Interclean Amsterdam 2018 reveals innovation and so much more in a full seminar schedule. As the professional cleaning and hygiene industry’s global showcase, Interclean Amsterdam is renowned for exhibiting innovative products, services and solutions. Complementing this throughout the show (15 - 18 May 2018) is a comprehensive seminar schedule, providing insight on the latest trends and developments. An outstanding line-up of expert speakers will be sharing their knowledge in varied sessions and events across a number of stages. Rob Den Hertog, Director of Professional Cleaning & Hygiene at RAI Amsterdam, stated: "Once again, our seminars and workshops will offer visitors the chance to gain expert insight into their cleaning challenges and discover the innovations that will drive the future success of their businesses."

The Interclean Stage (Elicium Ballroom)

The Interclean Stage is central to the knowledge sharing and networking opportunities available. A range of free sessions will explore innovation, new regulations and standards, and participation in the growing circular economy. The Interclean Stage will also host the Healthcare Cleaning Satellite Symposium (17 May).

The Innovation LAB (Hall 8)

A special ceremony acknowledging outstanding achievement opens Interclean, with the presentation of the Amsterdam Innovation Award (15 May). The overall winner of the award – and of each of the four categories – will be announced. Visitors have a special role to play in voting for (https://www.intercleanshow.com/en/amsterdam/innovations/nominees) their favourite innovation – right here – and the winner will receive the Visitors' Choice certificate. Free sessions enable visitors to explore products, services and concepts in greater depth. Vincent Everts delivers a seminar on the impact of new technologies on existing markets, entitled ‘Trendwatcher: Which Developments Should We Look Out For?’ (15 and 16 May). New business models, robots and apps, the Innovation Award nominees and other popular topics will be on Vincent’s insightful agenda. Also offering a fresh perspective is Paul Wonnacott, Managing Director and President of Vectair Systems. In ‘Evolution of Fragrance from Inside to Outside the Washroom’ (16 May), Paul highlights how advances in scent technology are being used to deliver an improved user experience. ‘New Dynamics of Selling in the Digital World’ (16 May) is a seminar from Roberta Donzelli, UK Senior Vendor Manager at Amazon. Roberta considers key questions, including: how must you think differently about marketing to succeed in the new digital age? The Facility Inspiration Event is a special day of events (16 May) dedicated to helping facilities managers improve their performance – and the Robot Arena has live demonstrations of the latest robot cleaners taking on a series of challenges.

74 | INTERCLEAN AMSTERDAM - SHOW PREVIEW

The Zero Waste LAB (Hall 7)

Waste is the essential raw material of The Zero Waste LAB. A workshop – ‘Anatomy of the Waste Bin’ – runs every day, giving visitors a hands-on opportunity to discover how to reduce their waste footprint. Out of the box thinker André J. Vonk – Managing Director of ECMR – will present the ECMR Sustainable Winner Award 2017 to the manufacturer that had the biggest impact in 2017 from recycling machines and materials to create new products (17 May).

The Healthcare Cleaning LAB

The Healthcare Cleaning LAB offers a dedicated platform for sharing best practice and innovation. A realistic hospital room mock-up will host live product and technique demonstrations daily. Illuminating seminar sessions feature industry leaders such as Ecolab (15 - 17 May) and Diversey (16 - 17 May). While Klaus Zscherpe – Director for Dispensing and Disposable systems at Ophardt – discusses his commitment to breaking the chain of infection (15 and 18 May).

The Healthcare Forum

A unique Healthcare Cleaning Forum (16 May), organised together with the WHO and Infection Prevention specialists, seeks to raise the profile of cleaning and disinfection in reducing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and improving patient safety. A range of sessions aim to bring healthcare and cleaning closer together. Seminars cover HAIs, education, staff safety, the newest research and the challenges of reducing antibiotic use. A €30 fee will be charged for this full-day programme.

CHICOPEE 01.505

Leading specialty wipes, cloths and mops brand Chicopee invites cleaning professionals to ‘beat the bacteria’ with its innovative, short-term use microfibre range at the forthcoming European exhibition. Chicopee will showcase its full range of microfibre solutions and will also launch its colour-coded microfibre economy disposable cleaning solution at Interclean Amsterdam 2018. James Taylor, Marketing Director – EMEIA – Specialties for Chicopee, said: “We’re delighted to be returning to Interclean to showcase our shortterm use microfibre range of cleaning wipes, cloths, and mopping solutions. These certified and patented materials deliver the very best in short-term and disposable cleaning performance.” The microfibre range has been created to serve industries including facilities management, healthcare, and precision

manufacturing. Healthcare is a major focus for the brand, given the need to meet the most exacting attributes to ensure effective defence against hospital acquired infections (HAIs). James continued: “By developing a 100% microfibre structure with our patented Apex technology, we have created a range that includes products externally verified to remove 99.99% of bacteria without the use of chemicals.” Potentially even more important is the products’ design for short-term use. Studies show that up to 93% of

76 | INTERCLEAN AMSTERDAM - SHOW PREVIEW

microfibre cloths contain dangerous levels of bacteria even after washing, according to the American Journal of Infection Control. Chicopee products are designed for short-term use, saving healthcare workers time and the worry of cross-contamination. Today, Chicopee solutions are currently in use in hospitals, airports, and varying industries across Europe, with many organisations utilising elements of the microfibre range with other Chicopee solutions to unlock a range of benefits. www.chicopee.com twitter.com/TomoCleaning

DIVERSEY

01.211 & 09.106 Diversey’s leadership in protecting and caring for people every day by pioneering future focused cleaning and hygiene technologies will be vividly brought to life at this year’s Interclean Amsterdam Show. Taking centre stage in the display will be Diversey’s MoonBeam 3 and IntelliLinen, both of which have both been shortlisted by the jury of the 12th Interclean Amsterdam Innovation Awards. The MoonBeam 3 uses powerful ultraviolet-C (UVC) technology to kill pathogens in just three minutes on high-touch surfaces in patient rooms, operating rooms and bathrooms, thereby playing an essential role in the fight against healthcare acquired infections. The Moonbeam 3 is equipped with three adjustable arms that generate a broad umbrella of light

ROBERT SCOTT 01.501

Cleaning manufacturer and supplier Robert Scott is preparing for a milestone year at this May’s Interclean Show in Amsterdam. The company is readying itself to showcase some of its latest product innovations, along with a range of its bestsellers and customer favourites which have been refreshed with a new packaging concept as part of the company’s rebrand. One of the products showcased by Robert Scott this year is the company’s Toucan ECA biocleaning system. Toucan is an electrochemically activated system with only two components – water (straight from the tap) and table salt (sodium chloride), which is dissolved in the water. Together they create a powerful, naturally-occurring disinfectant, cleaner and sanitiser that’s safe, non-toxic, non-allergenic, environmentally friendly and low

to easily disinfect both horizontal and vertical surfaces. Another stand-out innovation is IntelliLinen, part of Diversey’s ground-breaking Internet of Clean (IoC) platform. IntelliLinen’s laundry management solution prevents costly disruptions and errors within laundry operations, via real-time and remote transparency. IntelliLinen connects to any mobile device, giving teams visibility of the entire wash process to limit machine downtime and day-today operational costs. It highlights where laundry managers can reduce water and energy consumption, where chemical dosage can be more accurate, re-wash levels can be reduced, which machines are being under-used or creating bottlenecks – and where hygiene compliance is compromised. A third leading-edge innovation Diversey is showcasing at Interclean 2018 is the multi award-winning TASKI SWINGOBOT 2000 robotic

floorcare machine. The SWINGOBOT 2000 is equipped with all Diversey’s IoC-compatible Intelli-functions as standard. The IoC platform offers IntelliTrail for tracking machine location activity; Intelli-Trak for measuring site performance and software updates; IntelliDose for correct and accurate chemical dosing; and IntelliFlow for the correct management of water/ chemical solution consumption. The bot operates autonomously, avoids all obstacles in its path and will intelligently stop as soon as any change in its operating environment is detected. www.diversey.com

cost. Product specialist, Steve Courtney, will be demonstrating the cleaning system at the show and will advise customers of the business benefits of using Toucan ECA. Other new innovations on display include Hi-absorb cloth – a multi-purpose, highly absorbent microfibre cloth; the Stream mop – a time-saving double-sided microfibre flat mop; and the microfibre Handy mitt designed for quick, effective surface cleaning without chemicals. Robert Scott’s team will also be on hand, armed with their cleaning knowhow, to guide delegates through the extensive product range, offering live demonstrations, one-to-one advice, how-to guides and product samples.

78 | INTERCLEAN AMSTERDAM - SHOW PREVIEW

Alastair Scott, Sales Director at Robert Scott, said: “The whole team is looking forward to sharing their knowledge on the new innovations that we have to showcase; the results the products have been delivering for customers so far are extremely encouraging. We’d also like to get more customers involved with product training for their end users so we can help them to identify any areas where efficiencies in their cleaning processes can be made.” www.robert-scott.co.uk twitter.com/TomoCleaning

BIOPRODUCTIONS 01.320 Bio-Productions, manufacturer of cleaning and hygiene products for professional use, will be exhibiting at Interclean Amsterdam 2018. Using biological technology, we have produced cleaning chemicals since 1986, when we developed the first user-friendly, enzyme-based drain unblocker for the agricultural industry. Since then, we have continued to lead the field with Bio Dose, Bio Clear Drain and grease-trap maintainers suited to septic tank systems and water treatment facilities.

We specialise in problem-solving solutions that combine sympathy for our environment with first-class quality. All our products undergo rigorous testing to minimise their impact on the environment and are proven to work as effectively as – or better than – conventional harsh chemicals. Citra Clean cleaner and degreaser utilises natural orange solvents: its pH neutral formulation with quicksplitting technology means it is powerful enough to use in workshops, warehouse floors and garage forecourts, and yet also suitable for gentle laundry pre-spotting, with dilutions up to 200:1. As proud British manufacturers, we supply a diverse array of cleaning products to customers across the UK

and we also export to Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. Our products serve a variety of sectors, including healthcare, housekeeping, kitchen, laundry, floorcare and more. Our Biological Urinal Blocks and Blu Away Biological Washroom Cleaner optimise our enzyme technology for the washroom as well. Bio-Productions is the proud recipients of multiple ‘Green Apple’ awards for Environmental Best Practice, in recognition of our efforts to reduce the impact of cleaning chemicals in the environment, and are also certified to ISO 14001 (environmental management) and ISO 9001 (Quality management systems). www.bio-productions.com

ADDED VALUE MEETS PATIENT SAFETY

RAI Amsterdam has announced the International Healthcare Forum, and released a full schedule for this inaugural event. The future of healthcare will be on display at Interclean Amsterdam 2018, with the show featuring a dedicated healthcare segment and events taking place at the Healthcare CleaningLAB. On top of this, the exhibition will offer healthcare and cleaning professionals the chance to be part of a unique educational experience – the International Healthcare Forum. Featuring expert speakers from around the world, the Healthcare Cleaning Forum is separate to Interclean Amsterdam 2018, but will run alongside it on day two of the show. It aims to raise awareness, discuss best practice and explore the latest research on how cleaning can have an impact on antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) and infection prevention and control (IPC). Professor Didier Pittet, Director of the Infection Control Programme and World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre on Patient Safety, said: “Disease and infection do not recognise borders, so neither should our knowledge and understanding of how to prevent them. That is why we have introduced the first-ever International Healthcare Forum. By bringing healthcare and cleaning professionals together to discuss their challenges, we aim to improve communications between the two areas and add to the conversation on how best to approach AMS and IPC.”

As well as the seminars, the Healthcare Cleaning Forum will host an executive summary, during which visitors will gain an understanding of the links between IPC and environmental cleaning – along with how it can positively impact patient outcomes. There will also be a global Q&A session, when attendees will be invited to share their perspectives and challenges.

“The Healthcare Cleaning Forum is the first event of its kind to bring healthcare and cleaning professionals together.” The Healthcare Cleaning Forum is the first event of its kind to bring healthcare and cleaning professionals together – and will be a key step towards providing effective infection prevention and control, with the ultimate aim of improving patient safety. Please note, a registration fee of €30 per person applies for The Healthcare Cleaning Forum 2018.

“The future of healthcare will be on display at Interclean Amsterdam 2018, with the show featuring a dedicated healthcare segment.” EXPLORE THE ISSUES

Running from 10.00AM to 4.00PM on Wednesday 16 May, the Healthcare Cleaning Forum will feature a diverse programme of seminar sessions delivered by a number of international experts in their field. It will explore key topics, develop awareness of the importance of cleaning, and discuss the latest research – all with the aim of increasing patient safety and reducing antibiotic use. The sessions taking place at the Healthcare Cleaning Forum will investigate a range of areas, including: better methods for how to educate, train and improve cleaning; understanding cleaning in relation to safety (for patients and staff); the economic impact, and how it can alleviate the financial burden that HAIs place on healthcare organisations; and how to make the most of new research and technologies.

10 QUESTIONS WITH... PIERS GREENWOOD

Each month we ask a cleaning industry professional the Tomorrow’s Cleaning 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Piers Greenwood, Sales Director at Yorkshire Cleaning Fabrics Ltd.

Q5

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE CLEANING INDUSTRY? Much is made of the low perceived value given to the industry, the people in it and the job they do: I believe that if we don’t value ourselves correctly, how can we expect others to do so? We need to change perceptions and to do so all of us need to hold our heads high for the contribution we make to the country, the economy and to the wellbeing of the population.

Q1

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? I used to work in my father’s textile mill during the school holidays; it was a yarn package and top dyeing plant. Being the boss’s son, you name it they made me do it. The worst job in the mill was clearing out the waste water, effluent separation tanks: they were awash with lanolin and strange coloured water, when I climbed out I was blue all over and it took days to wash out, to say nothing of the smell.

Q2

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CLEANING INDUSTRY? Whilst working in bearing and power transmission sales for a distributor, I was supplying Yorkshire Cleaning Fabrics. I had known the directors of the company for a long time and a passing conversation about current levels of job satisfaction and potential progression in my existing line of work, this and the fact that their then sales rep had just given notice and the deal was done.

Q3

WHICH THREE WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONALITY? Nosy, persistent, jolly.

Q4

IF YOU COULD VISIT ONE PLACE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY? Chile: I want to see the sights, meet the people and make sure the wine is as good there as it tastes here.

92 | 10 QUESTIONS

I’d also urge industry members to move away from the lowest price, single use attitude to consumables. This can make cleaning easier, better, and more environmentally friendly, with the potential added benefit of lower cost in use.

Q6

IF AN INTERN WERE TO START TOMORROW, WHAT’S THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE THEM? Either “Smile, it costs nothing and goes a long way” or “Embrace change, it looks scary but brings with it opportunity, it won’t be long before you can’t remember what it was you were scared about.”

Q7

IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY TOMORROW, HOW WOULD YOU SPEND YOUR FORTUNE? I’m a Yorkshireman, who said anything about spending it? I‘d do a lot of travelling, binge on live music and have far too many classic cars.

Q8

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY AND INVITE ANY THREE PEOPLE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THEY BE AND WHY? David Byrne, the lead member of Talking Heads and prolific solo artist, motoring journalist and engineering aficionado L. J. K. Setright, and Grandma Fred (Winifred), sadly no longer with us but the creator of the most wonderful Yorkshire Puddings.

Q9

WHAT, DO YOU THINK, IS THE FUTURE OF THE CLEANING INDUSTRY? Bright, cleaning is a necessity of life and actually we are lucky to work in such a needed industry, there will be challenges and changes ahead but one thing is for sure, this trade will always be in demand. Andy Jones, General Manager at G&S Penrith Ltd., asks:

Q10

ARE THERE TOO MANY REGULATIONS NOW BEING PUT IN PLACE, WHICH ARE HAVING A DETRIMENTAL EFFECT ON THE BUSINESS? Unnecessary regulation is affecting everyone, not just the cleaning business. However, I am sure everyone will agree we do need regulation at least to a degree, the only thing is that it can also make the day to day running of any business difficult, particularly for the smaller businesses such as ourselves. So I suppose my answer is yes. www.ycf.net Check out next month’s issue to see what Piers asked our next industry professional... twitter.com/TomoCleaning
