For one thing, you have a sunny chance of escaping the notorious gray rainy days, and for another, Amsterdam plays host to various festivals as also other events that let you have a close-up glimpse of the inimitable Dutch culture. Once you arrive in our native city, you’ll find that you can find company in the form of the largest tourist throngs of the year 2013. As every seasoned tourist knows, if you are ready to share the city and endure long lines at attractions, you are sure to be rewarded with pleasant weather, long days, and myriads of outdoor festivals and other activities. With café terraces on every block,10 p.m. sunsets, eating and people-watching alfresco, you’re assured of exciting moments. Summer is a good time for a visit to the beaches and Amsterdam is blessed with two kinds: the natural and the manmade. The only difference is that for the former you rush to the north coast and the latter within the confines of the city, take your pick. You can make a day trip to one of those coastal beaches and join the hip crowds at the many notorious beach clubs and live it up, far into the night. And if you feel lazy and don’t want to leave the city because of all its cultural attractions, or you’re short on time, then you can make it to a man-made beach right at the heart of the city. It’s something like having your cake and eat it too. But remember! Amsterdam flights and accommodations prices are at their highest in summer and don’t usually go down until around September. This is the height of the season, and you should book your flight tickets and accommodations at least a couple of months in advance, if not earlier. Welcome to our welcoming city and enjoy yourself as you’ve never enjoyed before. So have a nice trip and a great holiday in Amsterdam.

DE LASTAGE LUXURY APARTMENTS

t all started six years ago. The biggest share holder of De Lastage , a former hotel owner, Rudolph Ansems together with David Reinders Folmer, saw an opportunity in purchasing a part of the building from the construction company that had difficulties with selling the lots at that time. The credit crunch started so real estate was not a good thing to invest in and that is when the idea of a short stay facility came up, apartments for tourists. Rudolph did not have much expertise in that area so he asked Thierry Smagge – a previous restaurant manager, to take care of the business. Their first clients – Cirque du Soleil, stayed at De Lastage while the whole place was still under construction. After a couple of months of prosperity something went wrong and a long period of stagnation came. Thierry tried talking to embassies, big multinational companies like Vodafone and Shell but as it turned out, they already had their housing arrangements with other companies. The company struggled for a year and then all of a sudden an idea came to Thierry’s mind, why not having a fully automated booking engine connected to Booking.com and Expedia.com? It was 2010 when the bookings went sky high. The team couldn’t handle the reservations! Amsterdam is a fine city for tourists but finding low-cost but quality accommodation might seem to be an insurmountable problem for new visitors. The quality hotels charge 1 € 00 or more, but there are indeed decent hotels that cost much less and so don’t have to create a gaping hole in your pocket by paying high tariffs. You also needn’t stay in cheap hostelries that compromise on quality and service. Let’s examine the best 5 budget hotels in my favorite city in the entire world.

Stayokay Hostel Amsterdam Zeeburg

This contemporary hostelry, founded in 2007, provides spacious rooms both shared as well as private, with a highly attractive décor that uses the national color optimally, a roomy and bright dining area, and first-rate toilets and also showers. As is the case with every Stayokay hostel, the staff has a welltrained professional approach and takes care of all public spaces round the clock. Located close to the museum district and Vondelpark, the Flying Pig was a newly redecorated in 2010. Being uptown, there is the party-centric ambience with the detoxifying atmosphere of the neighboring Vondelpark and it is even possible to borrow skates if you want to explore the city on top of one. The bar stays ever full and so is the kitchen, where the guests bend over the stove to get that tasty morsel. Interestingly, this creates a dynamic space what with the constant coming and going of the guests at all hours of the day and night. A word of caution though: Flying Pig is very strict about its under the 35s policy, and in case you are way over that limit, it is quite unlikely that you long to share rooms with a wanton horde of 18-year-olds. CitizenM is a prominent link in a new Dutch chain of hotels. Evidently, this is a boutique hotel as the designer Vita

furnishings signify; however, the quality service, opulent bedding as well as the budget tariff tend to change this hotel into a veritable haven for all, from backpackers to business executives. All rooms look alike, featuring wallto-walls beds against the window, as well as ultra modern shower and glass toilets off to a side. Every hi-tech feature, along with ambient multicolored lighting, is managed by means of the latest Philips MoodPad. This is essentially a residential area where party people might feel bored, although the downtown is a short train or tram ride away. Between Art and Kitsch B&B

A delightful alternative to all the design/boutique hotels that are fast appearing all over the city, this peculiar B&B is in De Pijp, a few minutes stroll from several museums, and is affectionately decorated by the owners. The rooms feature a hodgepodge of styles, replete with antiques, curiosities and other seemingly random items picked up on travels, ranging from colonial cabinets and Arab rugs to neoclassical chandeliers. All rooms are equipped with en suite bathrooms, and there’s a shared kitchen for all guests. As is so common in Amsterdam’s budget range, however, you’ll have to beware of the climb. It can feel like a stairway to hell to reach the third-floor rooms, especially when dragging your luggage. DOKA OPENING: FROM TERRACE TO UNDERGROUND W

hile club Canvas (Canvas op de 7e) undergoes a full renovation, a new initiative is born in the basement of the Volkskrant building on Wibautstraat: DOKA. For six months, the unused basement will be converted into a place where organizations and other parties are encouraged to explore the boundaries of nightlife. DOKA opens its doors on August 31. With the arrival of the brand new People’s Hotel, the entire Volkskrant building is currently under construction. In the meantime, the owners of Canvas and Amsterdam Roest are creating the ultimate temporary location in the basement of the original building. For about six months DOKA will constitute a developing space for art collectives, performers, DJs and innovative artistic organizations. The program includes collaborations with Subbacultcha, Tomorrow Is Now, Kid!, Kriterion and Amsterdam Dance Event. For late nighters, Thursdays feature NIGHT VISION with promising resident DJs such as Jules de la Courgette and Mr. Mendel. Those of more eccentric or adventurous musical temperament will feel at home on Friday nights with OBSCURA, while special concepts will be launched on Saturdays. DOKA Sundays feature DOKA ROYALE, a colorful night with DJs like Marcel Barlag, cocktails, Russian roulette, bingo, live acts and uncomplicated dancing. Next to its rich night program, DOKA also offers an oldfashioned dining concept. In DOKA DINNER visitors can try handmade tapas with fresh sauces directly from the snack bar display. Offering a social way of eating, DOKA DINNER is a concept that can also fit well into a flamboyant club night.

HOTEL V NESPLEIN BOASTS AND THE INCREDIBLE LOBBY

series of events unfolded recently in the bustling city of Amsterdam devoted to generate much creative energy that flowed freely through the great city, creating ripples in the flourishing boutique hotel scenario. One ripple of this process was the founding of Hotel V Nesplein, the brand new member to the Hotel V family, lying smack in the center of the city’s theater district, right on the foundations of Amsterdam itself. No wonder that Hotel V Nesplein has a warm, welcoming ambiance with theatrical influences incorporated in its design, in the form of a little of the elegance of the Continent back in the 1930s, in tandem with the edgy and raw Amsterdam of these days. Hotel V is located between the old city center and the prevailing quarter of Dam Square and as such is convenient

both for conventional sightseeing and for a more local taste of the bar and restaurant scene. The focus of the whole hotel is on the spectacular restaurant “The Lobby” where the locals can meet and interact with visitors from overseas. The lobby is a sensation right in the very core of the hotel complex, conceptualized with the contemporary tourist in mind. There is an eccentric sort of grandeur to Hotel V and this characteristic is most apparent in the designer lobby which is a harmonious blend of the restaurant and the library section, in which an enormous chandelier dangles coquettishly from a ceiling that is supported by elegant concrete columns, with the walls and floors lined exquisitely in parquet. It is spacious and cozy with one big space enfolding various areas including a lounge furnished with

couches. In an interview with one of the proprietors (there are four partners in total) of Hotel V, Jan Stuurman said that they have been thinking of establishing a hotel/restaurant in the city of Amsterdam for some time, with his partners whom he had met long ago and “had a nice click together” as he put it. They wanted to set up a new hotel in Amsterdam and they went on to establish two instead, the first being Hotel V Frederiksplein, closely followed by another named Hotel V Nesplein. According to Jan the hotel and restaurant are not two separate entities but a balanced combination of both. It is also a meeting point for three different worlds in a single space: the hotel guests, the international tourists and of course, the Amsterdammers. One unique characteristic of The Lobby is that there are hardly any partition walls between any of the different functions as one finds in a traditional hotel. The lobby consists of the reception, breakfast, lunch and dinner section, with everything in one huge space.

ROBECO SUMMER NIGHTS

utch jazz singer Caro Emerald will open the Robeco Summer Nights together with the Metropole Orchestra with a mix of latin, 195os jazz and swing. Among several special shows, this year’s edition also includes the film music of John Williams (known for composing the score for films such as Star Wars and Schindler’s List) played by the Dutch Symphony Orchestra and presented by actress Anna Tracker, as well as the extraordinary duo Igudesman & Joo (Russian violinist Aleksey Igudesman and BritishKorean pianist Richard Hyung-ki Joo) and their hilarious, virtuoso show with music from Mozart to Ennio Morricone. Jazz lovers are not left unsatisfied either. On July 20 Christian

Scott and the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw will pay a tribute to Miles Davis. And there is more. On July 3 American jazz vocalist Kurt Elling Sings Frank Sinatra, while Dutch singer Trijntje Oosterhuis will be performing songs of Aretha Franklin on August 24. For the more classically-oriented, conductor Andrey Boreyko and the National Orchestra of Belgium together with pianist Nikolai Lugansky will be performing Rachmaninoff’s wellknown Piano Concerto No.2 and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 ‘Eroica’ on July 5. On August 23 the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra with conductor Philippe Jordan and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet will also be playing music from

Wagner, Ravel and Shostakovich. On July 14 the The Radio Chamber Orchestra will be giving its farewell concert with the cantata “Eine feste Burg is unser Gott” by J.S. Bach and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5 ‘Reformation’. Last but not least, the Robeco Summer Nights Live! is introduced for the first time, where interested people can meet their favorite musicians and attend interviews. The new restaurant at Hotel V Nesplein was established on 21st of March 2013. Jan Stuurman revealed that the lobby consists of a restaurant, library, and a very long bar where the hotel guests can have a nice drink and relax enjoying the feel of the attraction of a real hotel bar. Still it has enough seats left to cater the people of Amsterdam. Right from the outset the promoters realized that the energy cannot be that of a normal restaurant, but something much more due to the combination of the many factors involved. As you enter the hotel you have to walk past the reception, then the unusual open space of a long hallway and you then you enter the lobby with the open kitchen, bar, restaurant, and of all things, a library with a fire place. Instead of the chaos that one would expect from such an odd combination of factors, you find that it is really working as a seamless, synergetic whole. Surprisingly, no interior decorator was involved in such a unique project that needed much imagination, design expertise and the ability to put the different aspects together as a single harmonious whole. However, it was done by Ms.Spinoza, a lady with super-tastes, who arranged every detail, every rug, couch and even the candlesticks and put them all together to such splendid effect. Thus everything one sees in the lobby has been cautiously thought of in a most incredible way. And the beauty of it all is that she is an accountant dealing with the financial aspects of running a hotel. The typical full Lobby Restaurant breakfast includes French toast, Blueberry Pancakes as also yogurt, eggs and granola. You can try various other flavors as the menu has much to offer. A pancake, complete with syrup, apples or cinnamon sugar or even the Greek salad pancake or shoarma pancake is also a good bet. As Ard Muntjewerf, the restaurant’s manager says, there is a difference between breakfast and lunch at the Lobby. Various kinds of breads baked by the artist himself – Karel Goudsbloem, V’S famous Flammkuchen or Hamburger with Pancetta together with a choice of cheese and salads will make you become an addict to Lobby’s menu. Dinner is something different at the Lobby. Marinated Mackerel in combination with vegetable stew and pea soup is a good choice for a starter. Then there is Onglet de boeuf with hazelnut puree and the finest Dutch pork neck from the region of Baambrugge to tickle your palate. Finishing off with a delicious Paris Breast with honey ice cream or butter milk mousse with strawberries is something you can only experience at the luxurious comfort of the Lobby Restaurant.

UITMARKET: THE GREAT FLOWERING OF DUTCH CULTURE

he Amsterdam Uitmarkt is the harbinger of another season of exciting happenings depicting Dutch culture, every year, in the visitor-friendly metropolis of Amsterdam. The whole venue is set out to entertain, inspire, as well as astound aficionados of music, theatre, film and books. A plethora of artists, troupes as well as cultural organizations join hands to make every edition that much special. The unique event is held during the closing weekend of August. Uitmarkt 2013 is scheduled to take place on August 30, 31 as also September 1.

Every year, this summer festival attracts an incredible 450,000 visitors, as the event is a major cultural event of the Netherlands and it is also the customary unfolding of the cultural season in the country. A whopping 2000 artists presenting around 450 performances that ranges from kid friendly to classical, jazz to theatre, and dance to hip

Uitmarkt Junior 2013: A fine fare for kids

The festivalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s activities are not confined to the star performances at large alfresco arenas, for there is something for the kids too, in the form of a book market named Manuscripta. This market has a whole series of information kiosks and stands with children in mind. An added attraction to the Uitmarkt Junior 2013 is the De Krakeling Youth Theatre, all set to provide a diversity of programs designed especially for all those who are young at heart. In tandem with kid-friendly performances, movies and street theatre, there is also a series of workshops as well as similar activities with the focus placed firmly in getting involved.

DAALDER I

f you are in Amsterdam and truly want to soak in the Amsterdam atmosphere, you are probably looking for a good restaurant with a local cuisine as well as clientele. Well if this is the case, we from Amsterdo can recommend you the place you are looking for. Daalder used to be a brown café when it opened twentytwo years ago – and with time it started to grow. The couple that have acquired it five years ago wanted to see this place to rise to something more than a café with a everyday pub fare. Quality, not just of food but also of service, has been a hallmark throughout the years for the current owners of Daalder. Their philosophy was to offer exceptional quality for a more than fair price in a warm and welcoming environment. In fact, Frans van Dam, the ‘patron-cuisinier’ for five years, is, as his wife Wilke tells us laughingly ‘ a quality freak’. Amongst his colleagues, his country style patisserie – hand-made and perfected to the last detail, soon became a product they wanted to sell at their own venues. Things turned up and they started selling his tasty works of art to other businesses, like the van Gogh museum and the Anne Frank House. Everything went great, but after some time the work started to become a little overwhelming for Frans – running the kitchen at Daalder and starting up the pie bakery. This is when, in the words of the owner, “the universe started working with them”. Everything fell into place, when one sunny day, the current Chef, Guillaume de Beer, walks in and says: ‘ Frans, you’re a great Chef, but I really think I can do this better!’ Wilke, Franz’s wife, shares that they where charmed by this young guys audacity and there was no doubt in their minds, that this strong-headed Chef could put his money where his mouth was, since they knew that Guillaume worked several years with Michelin Star Chef Richard van Oostenbrugge at both “ Restaurant Bord ’ eau ” (Hotel L’ Europe ) and “ Restaurant Envie” . After watching him work from the side lines for a couple of months, his level of performance in the kitchen exceeded their wildest imagination and they gave him carte blanche to change the Daalder formula. In fact it soon became clear that the creativity of this rock & roll Chef, thrives best with a menu in motion. He introduced a rapidly changing menu with fewer dishes. The idea is simple: the guest sits back, relaxes and let Guillaume do what he likes most: surprise his guests with his favorite dishes. (3 – 4 – 5 course menu) The rest is history: Wilke no longer had to advertise that this former ‘ brown cafe’ was actually a restaurant with great food and great service. With this young talented Chef, Daalder was suddenly reviewed by prestigious newspapers and magazines and picked up by people with a nose for hip and trendy cuisine. But despite all the publicity and success the owners will stick to their philosophy: they want to continue offering high quality cuisine in a low-key environment for a more than reasonable price. AMSTERDAM CANAL SWIM 2013

ome Sunday, September 8, 2013, Amsterdam will be celebrating the historic Amsterdam City Swim. On this exciting day, all canal cruise pedalos as well as boats will cease plying their usual trade, to give way to about 1,600 gritty swimmers, for a rather long swim.

Canal swim, an act of charity

The Amsterdam Canal Swim is organized in order to raise much-needed funds to extend help for those unfortunate people who are suffering from the Motor Neuron disease, better known as ALS here. This remarkable event witnesses swimmers raising at least 300 Euros in sponsorships, prior to leaping headlong into Amsterdam canals to swim a course, covering a distance of more than two kilometers in the process. And as you swim along you get marvelous glimpses of Hortus Botanicus, the Hermitage Museum and also the Carrétheatre.

How it all began?

It all began when 14 close friends swam across the Hellespont on August 30, 2011. They were swimming

for their good old friend named Weert Jan Weerts, who was afflicted with ALS and in the process were able to raise as much as 90.000 Euros. This human gesture resulted in a lot of encouragement as well as donations which inspired the group of ardent friends to organize the great annual event called Amsterdam City Swim. The chief motives for this was to bring popular attention to ALS as also raising funds to conduct research on the disease.

What is ALS

ALS is a motor-neuron disease that affects the muscles that begin to fail one by one, ending ultimately in the death of the sufferer. At present the condition is incurable. The life expectancy of an average patient is a mere three years. Nothing is known about what causes ALS and so intense research on the terminal condition is absolutely necessary.

Amsterdam City Swim: the route

The swim begins at Amsterdam’s well-known landmark, the Marine Establishment situated in central Amsterdam and braving the flow of the IJ, the hardy

swimmers passes along Het Scheepvaartmuseum and makes it towards the Nieuwe Herengracht. Then they turn left as they reach River Amstel and swim towards the Royal Theatre Carré and from there double back. Then they take another left turn and finish at the Keizersgracht canal.

Although it is too late for individuals to participate in the event, you can sign up as a part of any business team. And in case you are not really swimming in the City Swim, you can still head along to support the brave swimmers as they keep moving along the unique Amsterdam canals. Originally, the swim was launched in order to celebrate the earnest bid of Amsterdam for the 2028 Olympics. By taking part in the great swim, you will be rewarded with a rare opportunity of swimming along the heart of the great historical capital city. AMSTERDO’S AND DON’TS

irst of all, congratulations on choosing to spend some of your hard earned vacation in my adopted city Amsterdam, it is a city like no other. It has however come to my attention in the 10 years of living here that there are certain things are continually missed, ignored or misinterpreted by tourist. Not so uncommon really, in any city for that matter but a few of these do’s and don’ts are rather important here in Amsterdam and if one pays a little attention to them your experience here (and the locals impression of you) will be significantly improved. So in the true spirit of AMSTERDO, I’ve made a list that will hopefully help you more fully enjoy the fruits of this amazing city while also avoiding some of the goopy pitfalls. 1. Do rent a bike and experience why it’s possible to have a conversation right in the middle of a European capitol without being drowned out by the noise of traffic. Don’t buy a used one from a guy for 10 euros, it’s probably stolen and you would only be contributing to an already large problem of bike theft. Do have fun on the bike paths, sing while you ride or fart or whatever floats your boat but don’t ride stoned

with your earphones on or ride side by side and ignore the ringing sounds behind you. 2. Do take the time to explore the usual tourist spots like the the Anne Frank house, the many fine museums, Waterloo square market etc. but don’t miss riding out to the east side of town towards Java island to take in the wonderfully unique and modern architecture in juxtaposition with the old. 3.Do check out the sweet smelling coffeshops (even if you don’t puff, it’s good to see that all tokers are not grungy 20 somethings with “Uhhhh?” on their lips and minds. Don’t forget to order some drinks (coffee, tea, or carbonated beverage) while there. Even if you buy some weed and would like to sit down to skin up, you must buy at least one drink. Do enjoy your fuzzy bubble and gawking at the street scene outside but don’t turn yourself into a piece of furniture or you will be removed and placed not so gently buy the side of the street for trash pick up. Do have a puff in a secluded spot in either Vondel or Flevo park. Don’t puff in a policeman’s face to see how liberal the drug laws are here, he (or she) will not ignore you like an English guard standing in front of Buckingham palace. 4. Do check out red light district, both during the

daytime and in the evening. Don’t take pictures of the girls in the windows or your camera may be thrown with good force and reason into the canal. Do take the time to find the secret church while there, don’t go there too stoned and laugh your way into being asked to leave. Do go into the ubiquitous sex shops to look around or buy. Don’t ask what there return policy is on vibrators, butt plugs or lingerie. There isn’t one unless the box it came in is unopened. 5.Do ask questions of the locals, they love their cozy city and enjoy letting you know just how much they know. Don’t try to speak Dutch to them unless you are Dutch yourself, have a PERFECT accent or very thick skin . I’ve lived here a loooong time and have a daughter who is nearly a native speaker, I know the language pretty well but still find it difficult to even order a falafel without the guy working there answering me in English. Don’t let the locals “frank” way of speaking put you off. Yes, it’s true that many of them simply do not understand the difference between being straight forward and being just plain rude. The sixteenth edition of New Food Fair 2013 is due to be held on September 7 and once again the theme of this wellknown culinary extravaganza is food and drinks. The event occupies the whole length of the coziest shopper’s paradise of Amsterdam, the Haarlemmerdijk and Haarlemmerstraat. It is a veritable foodie’s delight and the two bustling straats are closed to all traffic, with the full area transforming into a dynamic dining spot as well as a vibrant market.
