the Amsterdo team As the first month of the year when you can expect reasonably pleasant weather almost every day, April can be a great time to visit Amsterdam for people who like to avoid crowds and without having to worry about bringing a parka. The year’s events calendar begins to pick up steam, and the blossoming of the local tulips is in full swing in April. April in Amsterdam in April is filled with chilly days but sunny days, a smattering of rain and a profusion of spring flowers. Keukenhof Flower Gardens has thrown open its welcome doors. It is warm weather in April after months of cold and snow. Everything comes to life as if a switch has been turned on by nature’s own hand, including the numerous parks that dot Amsterdam and its streets too. Springs sunshine means curtains up for the tourist season. Museums begin extending their opening hours and cafes suddenly come to life on outside terraces. For the budget minded, cost of accommodation as well as flights remains still low, particularly during the middle of the week. If you want to revel in this famous city and truly let yourself go, plan your sojourn here towards the end of April, Queen’s Day or Koninginnedag, the birthday of the iconic Queen Beatrix’s official birthday. I on behalf of Amsterdo.com welcome all reveling tourists to my singular city, Amsterdam. Here within the confines of the city and all around, you can find everything that a tourist looks for in a country. Have a good time

Welcome to Amsterdam’s community newspaper! We provide a reliable source of news, opinion and insight into the depth and diversity of Amsterdam, whilst simultaneously providing visitors with a unique guide to the various levels of the city. The team at AmsterDO come from all over the world and have a very mixed background, but one thing we all have in common is that we all love Amsterdam! We at AmsterDO don’t pretend to know it all. We don’t want this paper to voice the thoughts and opinions of a select group of people. We want this paper to be the voice of a city! We want local writers, photographers, artists, organizations and businesses to all be a part of AmsterDO.

ROBECO SUMMER NIGHTS
F
rom 29 June to 31 August 2013 the 25th edition of the Robeco Summer Nights (formerly Robeco Summer) is taking place at the Concertgebouw. A series of musical summer evenings full of classical, pop, jazz and world music that promise to offer music-loving Amsterdammers an unforgettable experience. Dutch jazz singer Caro Emerald will open the Robeco Summer Nights together with the Metropole Orchestra with a mix of latin, 195os jazz and swing. Among several special shows, this year’s edition also includes the film music of John Williams (known for composing the score for films such as Star Wars and Schindler’s List) played by the Dutch Symphony Orchestra and presented by actress Anna Tracker, as well as the extraordinary duo Igudesman & Joo (Russian violinist Aleksey Igudesman and British-Korean pianist Richard Hyung-ki Joo) and their hilarious, virtuoso show with music from Mozart to Ennio Morricone. Jazz lovers are not left unsatisfied either. On July 20 Christian Scott and the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw will pay a tribute to Miles Davis. And there is more. On July 3 American jazz vocalist Kurt Elling Sings Frank Sinatra, while Dutch singer Trijntje Oosterhuis will be performing songs of Aretha Franklin on August 24. For the more classically-oriented, conductor Andrey Boreyko and the National Orchestra of Belgium together with pianist Nikolai Lugansky will be performing Rachmaninoff’s well-known Piano Concerto No.2 and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 ‘Eroica’ on July 5. On August 23 the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra with conductor Philippe Jordan and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet will also be playing music from Wagner, Ravel and Shostakovich. On July 14 the The Radio Chamber Orchestra will be giving its farewell concert with the cantata “Eine feste Burg is unser Gott” by J.S. Bach and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5 ‘Reformation’. Last but not least, the Robeco Summer Nights Live! is introduced for the first time, where interested people can meet their favorite musicians and attend interviews. MOEDERS: WELCOME HOME TO TRADITIONAL DUTCH SUPPER
I
f you’ve been searching for that perfect place to take your mother, wife, or girlfriend on her birthday for some specially made home cooked Dutch cuisine, search no further than Moeders on the corner of Rozengracht and Nassaukade (Rozengracht 251 to be precise). Recently we sat down with restaurateur Jurriaan van der Reijden, who explained how the charming Restaurant Moeders came to be. “Twenty-three years ago, yes I believe it was 1990, we decided to make a restaurant where you could eat some really nice homey food.” The name, Jurriaan explains, stems not only from their desire to cultivate a feeling of hominess—or, as the Dutch say, gezellig—but also to honor all the mothers of the world whose tender home cooking has nourished us throughout the years. The décor of Moeders is like no other. In honor of mother’s everywhere, Jurriaan and his team accept portraits and photos (framed and unframed) of their patrons’ mothers (they are currently accepting pictures of mothers, so bring yours in today!). The walls are literally covered in portraits, along with other humorous motherly accoutrements such as dishrags hanging out to dry and a large brassiere. Everything there is to say about Moeders is in the name. Where are we eating tonight? At Mother’s of course! The cuisine choices come from tried and true recipes of Jurriaan’s own mother and of his mother-in-law. For those out-of-towner’s who miss their own mother’s cooking, they even offer international dishes including Italian and curry. On the menu card, you’ll find a simple layout with recipes including Annie’s Dishes (€15), Betty’s Dishes (€17), and Corry’s Dishes (€19) or you can opt for the three course menu which includes a starter plus a dessert for €26.50, €28.50, and €30.50 respectively. Moeders dishes are no flash-in-the-pan fast food. Stop by for some flavorful slow cooked meals, where the beef is braised and then simmered for hours in the traditional Dutch stew. According to Jurriaan, “Every mother has her own secret recipe and so we chose recipes that every Dutch person would recognize their own mother’s cooking a little bit.” We opted for one of the three course recipes and we weren’t disappointed! A traditional Dutch “rijstafel” (more like a banquet!) is prepared on tiny plates donated by the original patrons back when the restaurant first opened in 1990. This gives Moeders the feeling of the warm cozy kitchen most of us grew up in because like the traditional Dutch meal Hotchpotch or Stompot (potatoes mashed with vegetables and a of side sausages), the cutlery is itself
something of a hotchpotch. That is, every unique piece of mismatched plating and cutlery adds its own charm to your experience. If you want to try the kind of food that Dutch people actually eat in their homes, try Moeders, where you’re always
welcomed home. Open Monday-Friday from 17.00 to 24.00 and Saturday and Sunday from 12.00 to 24.00. From May till September, there’s a sunny terrace so you can enjoy your meal by the canal. For large groups reservations can be made online by calling 020-6267957.

“Diamonds are forever.”
T
his is probably the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about these precious pieces of pure beauty. One diamond can light up a whole room – and even shine beyond it. Now imagine many, many diamonds – sparkling, enthralling, capturing the light and winking with their smooth edges - a scene truly stunning, fiddling with the imagination – a scene that seems so distant and dreamy. Yet such a marvel can be found within the borders of Amsterdam! That’s right – our fair city is a home to an amazing collection of gems and diamonds in various forms – in jewels, single, even as parts of art pieces. The Diamond museum is something one of the places in Amsterdam that you just have to see for yourself in order to grasp the idea of what amazing experience it offers– going there truly is a must, not only for people who appreciate the beauty of gems, but also for everybody who is taken away with art and history. Old weapons, jewels, tiaras, crowns and other instructed with diamonds and precious stones creations of art and monuments of craftsmanship can be seen – an experience that will take you on a stirring journey throughout the halls of the museum. Your experience there can also come with an engrossing educational part. You will have the chance to observe an explanation about the formation of these rare, mysterious creations, called diamonds. The program continues with a film about the polishing procedures and a brief overview of the enigmatic, intriguing craft that the goldsmiths practice. The whole experience ends with a tutorial of how to evaluate a diamond – the four C’s - carat, clarity, colour and cut. After that you will be taken to the most interesting part – a tour through the wonders that lurk deeper in the building. One of the most significant pieces is one amazing katana sword, made of Murano glass, with diamonds and rubies in it. It has 1967 pieces of diamonds and 494 pieces of rubies in it - this numbers can only represent a shadow of the beauty teeming from this Japanese sword. Another interesting thing is that at some point you will be presented to one very special room – the glamour room. It is filled with diamond shaped mirror through the line, showing to the common eye, how diamond and glamour go together. Well, dear reader, I gave you a glimpse of what you can expect in the Diamond museum – the uncovering of its other offers is entirely up to you now! RON GASTROBAR: FUN AND ELEGANT DINING IN AMSTERDAM ZUID
T
he logo for Ron Gastrobar Amsterdam is an egg just about to crack open. In case you’re wondering what that’s all about, restaurateur and chef Ron Blaauw explains the promise of an egg. “In every kitchen everywhere, you’ll find an egg.” Fresh eggs are nutritious, versatile, and come in a handy single serving package. “With one egg,” Ron says, “you can make hundreds of different kinds of dishes. An egg [represents] the start of something.” That pretty much describes what went on during the transition from Ron Blaauw to Ron Gastrobar in an eggshell (pardon the pun). Ron is a chef who simply loves to cook. Operating an eponymous 1 and then 2-star restaurant for nearly twelve years, he recently gained even more notoriety when he announced he would close Ron Blaaw for good and reopen in the same location (Sophialaan 55) as a new gastrobar
called Ron Gastrobar Amsterdam. So what’s different? Well, the staff is pretty much the same. Ron still does the cooking. The décor is totally renovated replete with silver flatware and post-modern coffee cups. But what’s really different is the menu and the approach. The reason behind this change was simple. While on sabbatical in Australia, Ron realized he wasn’t cooking
the kind of food he wanted to cook and knew that he was capable of more than slavishly performing for guidebooks. Ron emphasizes the differences between him and some other chefs, “These people think they are artists, but come on, we cook food.” That is, a huge selection of twenty two main courses such as the Grilled Baby Leeks with anchoiade and crispy veal brains, the Fried Skate with artichoke, lovage, and lemon; Ron’s Cauliflower with meatballs and Messeklever cheese. You can’t leave without trying dessert. Our absolute favorite was the Lamada Strawberries with Crème Fraiche with foam of madeleines. Since reopening at the beginning of April, Ron Gastrobar has been fully booked everyday, which means something between one hundred and one hundred fifty customers. So what’s the concept? Again, simple: Ron knows people want to eat delicious food with great service at a reasonable price. He’s even taken out the math when divvying up the bill at the end of the night. Each carefully designed dish is priced at just €15. They recommend ordering three to four dishes per person. The ingredients are sourced from the same suppliers as before, which means there’s no downgrade in the quality of meats, cheeses, vegetables, etc. According to Ron, “It’s all about ingredients, people, and enjoyment.” And you could tell that’s true from listening to all the happy customers chatting away as they delved into yummy dishes on gorgeous flatware. So what’s next for Ron Gastrobar? More gastrobars! Ron is toying with the idea of a gastrobar in London, Italy, maybe even Asia. For Ron, classy means embracing all the classes and he believes every city should have a fun place where you enjoy yourself and eat a lot of delicious food without a lot of nonsense.

FLETCHER HOTEL AMSTERDAM
L
ocated in the Zuidoost area, luxurious Fletcher Hotel contains 120 sizeable rooms, an elegant roof terrace, a fully equipped gymnasium, free WiFi, plenty of free parking both above and below ground, but those features are just the tip of the iceberg. All the staff, including Hotel Manager Trudy van der Hulst, makes sure you have a pleasant stay on the highest level. On entering Fletcher Hotel Amsterdam you notice an unusual building, oval shaped, overlooking a lake, highway, golf course (the view from the 18th floor is amazing…) what more can you ask for? All designed by renowned architectural firm, Benthem Crouwel, who also designed Rotterdam Centraal Station and the recently re-opened Stedelijk museum. At the remarkable Sky Lounge Pi, you can enjoy a tasty, alcohol free, fruit cocktail, made from fresh strawberries with a touch of mint, prepared by one of Fletcher’s expert bartenders or the Restaurant Manager himself, Kevin Scherpenzeel. One floor up and you experience a kaleidoscope of delicious meals, prepared fresh out of adjacent Sky Restaurant Pi by Chef cook, Raffael San Jose. All served by top class and very friendly waiters. The dishes itself strive for a Michelin Star award due to their taste and plate presentation. Arrive at magic hour and your lucky to catch the smooth tunes of the amazing Whaletone grand piano... But the aesthetic experience doesn’t stop there. Every detail of the cylindrical Fletcher Hotel Amsterdam, from the lighting arrangements, round seats, the cylindrical shower stations, large, circular windows, to The Dream (one of the largest chandeliers in the world) reflects the Fletcher’s fascination with round objects and wholeness, reflected by it’s opulent style. The whole building, from the interior to the exterior— even the view from the Skybar—is a feast for the eyes. Be that a business meeting or a date, Fletcher hotel has the best venue to stagger everyone’s senses. MEET A WOMAN WHO RULES THE ROAD: HARLEY-DAVIDSON AMSTERDAM
S
imone Bokma is not your typical Harley-Davidson dealer. Apart from being featured on the cover of her own WOW! (Women on Wheels) Magazine, she’s also the only female dealer/owner of a Harley-Davidson dealership on the entire continent. In 2010, Simone was crowned Motorcycle Woman of the Year and as a motorcycle ambassador, Simone has made it her personal goal to get women involved in the sport that for her has become not just a passion, but a successful career. It all started around the time Simone turned 40-yearsold. A mother of two, she was experiencing that all-too familiar “mid-wife crisis” that comes with the pressures of balancing work and family. She already had a driver’s license. Why not get a motorcycle license? So, when Simone and her husband decided to each buy a bike, a Harley Sportster 1200 for her and a VROD for him, the rest was Harley history. Riding a Harley, as many owners claim, is like no experience out there. After becoming something of a celebrity in the Harley world, Simone got invited to Harley’s Milwaukee Corporate Headquarters in Wisconsin, where she sat down with industry professionals who suggested she start her own dealership. Why not? It seemed like a natural step since Harley was becoming such a big part of her and her family’s lives. Simone opened her own Harley-
Davidon dealership in August 2011. Since then, Simone and Harley-Davidson Amsterdam have become active participants in promoting female riders, including hosting and sponsoring events such as all woman ride-outs, where female Harley enthusiasts can ride together, share driving tips, and train. Simone says these ride-outs help would-be female riders gain the confidence and independence they need to get started on the pathway to experiencing the ultimate freedom that owning and riding a Harley can bring. Simone also started a Harley-Davidson Amsterdam Facebook group that shares and promotes local ride-outs and sponsored events. Simone and Harley-Davidson Amsterdam recently got together with jewelry and apparel designers, Buddha to Buddha, another successful Dutch company that shares the same enthusiasm for rugged style and excellence, to craft a custom bike like no other. The “Buddha Street Glide Bagger” features black denim and anthracite alcantara upholstery, a black matte finish, 26” rear wheel, trunk extensions, Monkey Ape handlebars, a Roland Sands air filter, a Vance & Hines exhaust, and of course the stylish elements that make it a signature Buddha to Buddha / Harley-Davidson vehicle.
Come see the Buddha Street Glide Bagger and many of the other bikes on sale in the showroom. See their friendly staff about advice and rentals. Simone and her crew at Harley-Davidson Amsterdam pride themselves on the great customer service you’d expect from one of the world’s leading motorcycle brands. In addition to servicing all Harley models, Harley-Davidson Amsterdam also offers one-hour express lane service for tourists and riders on-the-go. If you’re stopping in on a road trip, check out their massive souvenir shop upstairs, where you’ll find the largest selection of Harley-Davidson apparel, Black Label, and other Harley-themed gear in the Benelux area, specially designed for the Amsterdam collector. No visit to the Harley-Davidson Amsterdam Dealership is complete without an Amsterdam Harley-Davidson T-shirt with personalized Dutch backprint. Simone and her crew at Harley-Davidson Amsterdam welcome you to join in on their ride-outs every first Sunday of the month. Their riding group, The Amsterdam Chapter, also plan 3-day ride-outs to Germany. Can’t make it to Jarmuiden 43? Harley-Davidson Amsterdam anticipates expanding in the near future to a satellite store in and around Rembrandtplein to satisfy all your souvenir and rental needs.

UNSEEN OUDE KERK
O
ude Kerk ( Old Church, for the ones who doesn’t have a smattering of Dutch ) is Amterdam’s oldest building and parish church. Today the Church hosts both religious and cultural activities, like the renomated World Press Photo awards ceremony. Many visitors every day pop in it, but just some of them take a closer look to the misericords, where small pieces of art from the 15th century are carved: some are merely decorative, while others illustrate everyday scenes and proverbs. Most of all reminds us not to waste our life in vain efforts, vices and luxuries, but is something really hard to do nearby the Church if you think it’s located in De Wallen (Adam’s main Red Light District) where the major tourists attractions are coffeeshops and window-prostitutes!
A common Flemish proverb ‘To outgape the oven’, means to try to do the impossible and marks the paths of the Flemish carvers through Europe: Amsterdam, Hoogstraten, Isle Adam, Oviedo, Zamora and Kempen.
‘Banging your head against a brick wall’: don’t spend too much time trying hard to obtain something completely hopeless.
A man drinking from a mug. ‘Fall between two stools’: when you can’t choose between two different possibilities (stools), you could end up sitting on the ground.
‘Pull gently at a weak rope’: if you pull the rope too quickly, it could get broken (and you could lose all your job).
‘Muck and money go togheter’: you can earn good money if you don’t mind dirtying your hands.

n Japan, love dolls were known as “Dutch Wives” until a few years ago because during Indonesia’s colonization from 1602, Dutch soldiers had sweaty sheet problems: they so used a bamboo bolster in bed to keep their bodies cool. Due to the lack of their wives, soldiers also needed someone (or something, in this case) to hug through the lonely nights. “A voyage around the world, during the years 1835, 36, and 37” written by the surgeon William Samuel W. Ruschenberger and published in 1838, describes his stay on the Indonesian island of Java (passed from the Dutch to the British in 1811): “We found our sleeping rooms pleasant. The beds were supplied with an additional hard bolster or
pillow whereon to rest the lower limbs, which has obtained the somewhat equivocal name of “Dutch wife””. These pillows, lately known in Japan as “Dakimakura” (from the Japanese daki “to hug” and makura “pillow”) became really famous and appreciated over the years and slowly took the shape of a real woman. Love dolls, at first made of used clothes, are older than they seem: also Spanish and French sailors enjoyed their companionship while isolated on the sea for several months. So next time, walking through Rembrandtplein or the Red Light District, you’ll meet one of these “beautiful” inflatable women, think about how long that piece of vinyl’s history is! Corinna Campanile
