Oh Amsterdam, that oh-so-gorgeous summer you had is now officially gone – over and out. Summer 2013 seems like a dream from which we just woke up for those of us who were here and the sweet smell of nostalgia for those who weren’t. But don’t die in despair; whatever was worth exploring outdoors last summer will be taken over by the ‘gezelligheid’ of indoor spots this winter and fall. And indeed with the first signs of autumn, we welcome you to our 8th edition of AmsterDO. Last month was a very cold month, and December will hopefully be white! This month has even more to offer with first, Christmas - New Years and all the holiday markets . Make sure you don’t miss them - a big one on Damrak and the second on Leidseplein Also don’t forget to check amsterdo.com for daily fresh news and articles All the best from the Amstredo team in 2014! … and many more

We provide a reliable source of news, opinion and insight into the depth and diversity of Amsterdam, whilst simultaneously providing visitors with a unique guide to the various levels of the city. The team at AmsterDO come from all over the world and have a very mixed background, but one thing we all have in common is that we all love Amsterdam! We at AmsterDO don’t pretend to know it all. We don’t want this paper to voice the thoughts and opinions of a select group of people. We want this paper to be the voice of a city! We want local writers, photographers, artists, organizations and businesses to all be a part of AmsterDO. Each month we will be holding parties and competitions for everyone who wants to get involved. If you have an event, a story, some artwork, a good cause, a mission or a dream.... THE ARRIVAL OF SINTERKLAAS
W
hen you are a foreigner, living in The Netherlands, there are many things that you should learn about this country, its culture and traditions. It raised great painters, it produces tasty cheese and it is well known for a liberal lifestyle. But what you should really know is: how to prepare youreslf for the arrival of Sinterklaas. Let’s start with some facts. Who actually is Sinterklaas? As history states, he was a bishop, originally named Saint Nicholas( Sint Nicolaas). According to the Dutch tradition, every year he and his helpers travel all the way from Spain (where he lives) to The Netherlands on a steam boat, to bring gifts to the children. There is a lot of controversy around the characters of the helpers. They are called ‘’Zwarte Pieten’’ (Black Petes), they are always dressed in colorful outfits that remind dresses of 17th century pages. As an addition to that, their bodies are painted black and usually they have black curly hair. There is a strong opinion that it’s racist, however Dutch people came up with an answer to that. They say, that the helpers are black simply because they have to come to the children through a chimney and that is why they are black, from the dirt. One of the other sources states that Saint Nicholas, the bishop, bought the freedom of an Ethiopian slave called ‘’Piter’’, and the boy was so grateful that he decided to stay with Sinterklaas. Whatever it really is, all we know is that Saint Nicholas and his helpers come to the Netherlands in mid- November and from that moment on, the craziness begins. Every evening children can prepare their shoe, so that in the morning they might find it filled with a treat (usually chocolate letters or mentioned above cookies). Supermarkets are filled with all kinds of chololate-almondgingerbread treats for the smaller ones.
On the national television, there is a special TV programme called the ‘’Sinterklaas journaal’’ which shows the events of the gifts that Sinterklaas is bringing. Each year Amsterdam hosts the arrival of Sinterklaas on the canals. This year it will take place on the 17th of November. Street are going to be full of the enthousiats of this even, who come to see the Sinterklaas himself and to collect free pepernoten which will be given out to the crowd by Zwarte Pieten. Afterall, on the evening of 5th of December, all the children who behaved themselves during the whole year, can expect a gift from the Sinterklaas. It is a ritual that developed a lot, and these days also adults prepare some small presents for each other. That evening is called by the Dutch

‘’Pakjesavond’’ and usually is a very nice experience. It is particular but as a foreigner it is impossible not to admit, that hot chocolate, almond cake, thoughtful gift and a warm companion is something that can put a smile on your face. If you are from the outside and you have never heard of this tradition before, you can get pretty much surprised walking down the street on the arrival of Sinterklaas, seeing something that once some tourist in Amsterdam called ‘’black clownes’’ who give out gingerbread cookies for free. After them, comes and old grey man, in bishop’s clothes who greets the children and listens to their wishes. This might be one of the strangest traditions that you get to know, however it has been celebrated this way for years in The Netherlands, and as long as it brings happiness and joy- we should find our way to enjoy it.

THE BEST SHOPPING STOPS IN AMSTERDAM
1. Droog
This is one of the more unique stores you’ll find anywhere in terms of its product, and it’s had so much success that the owners have now opened a second location in Las Vegas, Nevada. The entire store experience in Amsterdam is completely original. The store is located at the “Droog Hotel,” where you’ll also find a café and tearoom. As for the products, Droog is known for pushing design - for accessories, lighting, furniture, etc. - in new directions, using strange materials and concepts to create beautiful new ideas.
2. Lockstock & Barrel
Located in the Nine Streets shopping district in the heart of the city, Lockstock & Barrel is in the midst of an overall experience any visitor will cherish, with wonderful restaurants and shopping experiences crowding the area. 5. The American Book Center
M&S famously closed its European locations outside of the UK in 2001, but its store in Amsterdam has been back up and running a while now, and is a wonderful place to shop. This particular location seems to be emphasizing the retailer’s renowned food options, giving locals and visitors alike a taste of something different, and there is still a small clothing section as well. M&S also offers a webshop uniquely suited for Dutch customers.
5
If you’re into cutting edge design, look no further than Moooi. The store space itself is rather stunning, a blinding white, ultra-modern layout that sets off the products within brilliantly. The store stocks a consistently updated collection of design products (furniture, accessories, etc.) from high-end collections and design fairs all over the world.
With so much focus on design throughout the shopping districts in Amsterdam, this book shop offers a nice twist on your shopping experience. Essentially, it’s the city’s default location for books and literature collections in English, but the store has a certain charm to it. It caters to a large audience with a variety of genres, and is always a nice place to stop while exploring the city.

THE BEST OF THE DAM + AMSTERDAM FILM WEEK
E
diting my preferred Amsterdam purlieus down to a select few was more challenging than I had expected. So, I let my sweet tooth and penchant for indie cinemas do the picking.
Candy Freaks
This old-time candy shop located on the exclusively vintage Nieuwe Hoogstraat is a must-visit after a full-on day of secondhand shopping. There’s really no need for persuasive talk here, as the shop-window’s retro mannequin bathing in her candy-filled bath tub is sure to lure you in (she got me!), but I’ll attempt to tempt you anyway. Say ‘yes’ to the free mini tour, and you’ll be able to sample essentially anything and everything your eyes land on (the shopkeeper admitted to his always-successful method!). Make sure to dip into the classics and try the new-and-improved varieties ranging from organic and natural to gelatin- and glutenfree to vegan and vegetarian to halal and kosher! Cannabis? Well, of course. And believe it or not, the healthier options pack a more flavorful punch. Visit this quaint sweet shop in Amsterdam and join the (guilt-free) candy freaks!

Wynand Fockink Crepes au Grand Marnier
Known as the best creperie in Amsterdam, Crepes au Grand Marnier, hidden in the artsy Spiegelkwartier of Amsterdam, is definitely worthy of its bold rep. I bet the French would even nod their heads “oui, oui.” If it weren’t for its flashing sign, this teensy crepe joint would probably go unnoticed. But, it’s not to be missed! If you’re a fan of speakeasy-type locations, you’ll love this below-ground creperie. I felt like I was in NYC at Crif Dogs, minus the hot dogs and hushhush phone booth. And if you’re indecisive like I am, you’ll love the limited but sure-to-please menu. Follow what I did and visit the magnificent Rijksmuseum, pop inside a few antique shops and art galleries along Nieuwe Spiegelstraat, and finally, treat yourself to a gauzy, Amsterdam-style crepe. The suiker citroen, “sugar lemon,” is a classic, as well as the shop’s aromatic specialty, Grand Marnier.
The Movies
Art-deco art house, The Movies, is the oldest movie theater in The Dam. Since 1912, it’s been showing topnotch independent films, appealing to a cultured crowd of cinephiles. The nostalgic old-school sign alone attracts filmgoers, and so does cinemeal, The Movies’ convenient dinner-and-a-movie deal! Moviegoers can enjoy a pleasant meal inside the theater’s very own restaurant and for once not worry about being tardy for a film. Plus, there’s cinemum, which caters to parents and their children, allowing everyone to enjoy a trip to the movies. This theater has got it all.
Alongside traditional brown cafés, quintessential tasting rooms can be found throughout the Dutch capital. Wynand Fockink in particular is a local favorite. Located down the alleyway beside the famous Kransnapolsky Hotel in Dam Square, this original 17th-century proeflokaal serves up more flavors of jenever and sweet liqueur (try cassis!) than
one could possibly ever conjure up. The jonge, “young,” jenever is similar to gin, and the oude, “old,” jenever is said to be the equivalent of whiskey. But jenever itself can only be called by its official name if it contains a certain amount of juniper berry. I’d also elaborate on the mandatory drinking process, but I’ll let you find that out for yourself! No need to bend over backwards — or forwards (wink, wink) — to impress your visitors. Just take them to Wynand Fockink!
De Uitkijk
Housed in a former warehouse dating back to 1902, this romantic theater is the oldest in all of the Netherlands. With an avant-garde selection of films and a contagious old-world charm, De Uitkijk has made its way deep into my heart and into the hearts of the devoted students who run it. Cozy, crimson and comfortable, De Uitkijk is perfect for those who like going to the movies alone. New to flying solo? Relax in the intimate balcony and have the theater all to yourself. Make sure to check out Amsterdammers’ beloved cinehaven this week!
Amsterdam Film Week
The third edition of Amsterdam Film Week will run from tonight until Sunday, November 3. Award winners like “Silver Linings Playbook,” plus new international award-worthy films will be shown at six quality locations throughout Amsterdam: De Balie, Cinecenter, EYE, Kriterion, Pathé Tuschinski and De Uitkijk. Fancy a VIP viewing? This year’s AFW is extra special as it’ll be introducing Public Premiers (starting tomorrow). Each night, filmgoers will have the chance to attend films not yet out in cinemas — “Diana,” “Captain Phillips” and more! — and receive a goody bag and two refreshments for only 1€ 2.50. Tickets can be ordered online or purchased the night of. AFW kicks off at 9 p.m. tonight!

North Sea Jazz Club

With one of the leading players in the game definitely being The North Sea Jazz Club hosting a swinging jazz culture with a fresher face. Situated in the Westergasfabriek, it is incredibly suited to its surroundings. Where cultural orientated music lovers and tourists congregate to create a great atmosphere and setting for an evening of jazz, soul, funk and world sounds. Club hosts a variety of intimate nights. Spanning from live acts, big names and, the of course, very talented up and coming acts. Hitting the club on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday will give you the best in live acts that will make your feet move and make your ears very happy. You can start your night out with a seated dinner concert and after that there’s even more music: North Sea Jazz Club is one of the few places in Amsterdam where you can discover up and coming live music late at night. This free ‘after show’ starts at 23.30. After this the DJ will make sure that the evening evolves into a club night until close.
No plans for a Friday evening? Simply come by to the club and enjoy a delicious 3 course dinner during Friday Night Out accompanied by live music performed by The Fresh Cuts and special guests like Alain Clark, Shirma Rouse, Steffen Morisson, Krystl, Charly Luske and many more… The dishes are served in a Michelin style entourage that deliver great tastes and satisfaction. Riding a Bamboo bike
A
new bicycle that grows on trees? Well, not quite, as bamboo grows strongly straight out of the earth. The new Blackstar bikes, the beautiful frame which is made from a bamboo, take environmental aware a step further. You are not just cycling around the city in order not to pollute the atmosphere with motor fumes, your natural bamboo bike itself is mostly a sustainable machine. Bamboo is already very strong but the frame for this bike is also reinforced with hidden steel pipes inside. The wooden surface is coated against weather and wearing, coating can be reapplied when scratched or damaged. The innovative Dutch company imports the bicycle frame from Ghana, where it employs 40 workers, already shaped to a simple and pleasing Dutch bike design. The bikes are assembled in Holland, using brand-name parts supplied directly from the makers, who are supporting this exciting innovation. The company says that its aim is to add natural beauty to a utilitarian mode of transport that is used daily. It has done that quite brilliantly. The bike weighs a light 14 kilogrammes and can be yours for â‚Ź 8 49. Meeting the highest European standards, these even greener bikes have been sold to satisfied customers since July last year. They have been strength-tested in Germany before that. Following their successful debut along the canals of Amsterdam, Blackstar now has dealers outside Holland and offices in New York, Chile, Switzerland and Germany.
IL Pacioccone
THE TASTE 9

W
hile sitting in the new Il Pacioccone, at Sint Jacobsstraat 8 in Amsterdam, diners could easily drift off for a little while to Italy, to Naples in the sunny south in particular. The cosy space of the restaurant, surrounded by walls of old weathered bricks, is filled with the overwhelming aroma of an eating place under the southern Italian sun. You hear Italian being spoken, as well as Dutch English and other languages, by diners enjoying their food and conversation. Bottles of good Italian red wines stand at the ready along the wall, for you to choose at your leisure. A huge vegetarian pizza comes past, its fragrance of melted cheeses and traditional pizza dough is tantalising, to say the least. There is a mountain of home-made Italian bread on view, freshly-baked in a a traditional wood-fired pizza oven, and ready. If you know the true breads of Italy, you can already tell how good these in front of you will be. The brown and floured crust would be thick and crusty, and the dough inside elastic, substantial, and delicious. And it is, when cut in large slices for you. The Napoli A Tavolta is the restaurant special menu, costing ₏30 per diner. Everything for this tasty feast comes from Naples, including the selection of wines that comes with your dishes. The restaurant’s Lasagna blue cheese and radicchio, in particular that is served melting hot, that also melt in your mouth, once cooled down a little. The truffle evening is also something out of the culinary ordinary. Lucky Amsterdam, is all we can say.

Brouw – smoked meat and craft beer
T
he new Bar Brouw, at Ten Katestraat 16 in Amsterdam, simply combines smoked meat and craft beer, a match that can not fail to succeed. And it must succeed, judging by the crowds that are daily appreciating both ingredients. The nicely-drawn logo of a mustachioed cat invites you into an old-world atmosphere, complete with weathered wooden table surface that looks as if it has been in service for centuries. On its surface now is a varied selection of Americanstyle smoked meats, finely sliced. Try to stop your fingers automatically reaching for the meat pieces. Almost impossible. But then there is no need to hesitate. In your hand is already a mug of golden, foamy and aromatic beer, say a Big Leaf Maple from the Anchor Brewery. The creamy and aromatic beer will wash down admirably the smoky tastes of the sliced beef and pork, that had been curing for some time, as had your craft beer. As you would expect there is a big choice of boutique beers, whiskies and other spirits also, from all over the world for you to taste. To go with your beer can also be ordered delicacies such
as Pulled Pork Sandwich (€7.50) for lunch, or Brisket (€17) or Pulled Pork (€15.50) for dinner. The cat of the logo is looking

MUSEUMNACHT 2013
L
ucky for you Amsterdo-ers, Amsterdam’s annual Museum Night (Museumnacht) is just around the corner, and the world-renowned museums in Museum Square are among the 50 participating venues in this year’s celebration-of-the-arts event. The ubermodern Stedelijk, newly renovated Rijksmuseum and evolving art styles of Van Gogh are sure to unveil the aspiring artists inside of you, while the intoxicating House of Bols and brilliant Diamond Museum just outside the square will finish off your night of museummusing with a pleasant dose of imbibing and glitz. Every first Saturday in November (this year falls on November 2), arty locals and tourists have the opportunity to experience Amsterdam’s thriving museum culture — until 2 a.m.! Museums come to life on this spectacular evening, showcasing what a culturally rich metropolis Amsterdam truly is. I can’t wait to see what offbeat surprises, new activities and bespoke routes Museum Night-organizer N8 has creatively prepared for us all this year. If the event is anything like last year’s, just imagine walking ghosts, 18th-century soirees, and salsa workshops in Rembrandt’s house. Join me on a brief journey through Amsterdam’s museum quarter and take a peek into last year’s museum night. Buy your tickets before they sell out! Last year, we museum riffraff had the pleasure of witnessing the opulent lifestyles of some of the most affluent families in Amsterdam. Above, the 19thcentury mansion of the art-sophisticated, worldly-wise Willets; a musical soiree inside the Geelvinck Hinlopen Huis, an 18th-century Amsterdam palace; and a peek into family Van Loon’s palatial home. Interested in a museum outing after Museum Night? Consider purchasing the museum card, which grants you free access and discounts to museums throughout the Netherlands. It unfortunately won’t get you a free Museum Night ticket, but you can use your Museum Night booklet to help you explore the Amsterdam museum scene whenever you choose. Your Museum Night wristband will also allow you € 1 off at participating cinemas on Sunday, November 3 and one free museum visit until December 31. Enjoy Museumnacht 2013!

FRAMED IN PRINT A REVIEW
W
hilst going through some major internal and external renovations, Foam is hosting three new photography exhibits. The main, and most colourful, one highlights Dutch magazine photography from the past 40 years; Framed in Print. On display from October 11 through December 11, this densely curated exhibit bombards the viewer with image beyond image of photographs from five prominent Dutch photographers. The ‘exhibition photo caption’ booklet is essential for anyone wanting to make linear connections throughout this exhibit.
Divided into thematic sections, including portraits, food, sports, travel and fashion, each wall is plastered with a succession of photographs taken by different photographers. Up to 40 photographs may be on one wall, with even more photos placed on structures in the centre of each room highlighting an individual photographer, there is not much space for the viewer to appreciate each photo individually. The photo caption booklet describes the exhibit as “…read[ing] like a magazine,” though this simile can only be applied loosely to the thematic categories.
An exercise in visual culture and the practices of looking, this exhibit challenges the viewer to create meaning in a decentralised manner through seemingly anonymous images, without the aid. Be exposed to multiple styles of photography varying based on both the content of the images and the photographer. Creative photography, photojournalism and many styles in between, this exhibit holds something for everyone. Tickets to the entire museum cost €8.75 for adults, €6.00 for students, and with a Museumkaart entrance is free. Foam is located at 609 Keisersgracht in Amsterdam.
ONE DIFFERENT CINEMA-DATE IN AMSTERDAM
W
hen living in a metropolis like Amsterdam, there are a lot of opportunities and ideas for your free time. On the other hand, the unstable weather conditions are ruining the idea of a nice walk through the center, especially if you are a foreigner coming from a warm place, and you are still not used to the Dutch specific climate. For this purpose, Amsterdam has a lot of cinemas to offer, for those who are not huge fans of clubbing and loud music, but love the 7th art. Although, talking of cinemas, there is one that is not like the others! Located near the city center, between the Rembrandtplein and the Munt tower, the Tuschinski Theater is considered as one of the most beautiful cinemas in the world. Nowadays is a movie palace in Art Deco and Gothic style, but at its
time the wonderful piece was the crowning achievement of Abraham Tuschinski – a self-taught Jewish tailor from Poland. Built in 1921, the Theater Tuschinski was erected based on the designs of architect H.L.De Jong, with interior décor by Pieter den Besten and Jaap Gidding. De Jong could not finish the building though, since Tuschinski fired him before the end of the construction. The theater was opened on 28th October 1921, with an original seating capacity for 2000, orchestra, balcony and upper circle levels. After the German occupation of Holland in 1940, it was re-named in Tivoli Theatre, and began screening German made Nazi anti- anti-Semitic films. Abraham Tuschinski and most of his family at that time were deported to Auschwitz in July 1942, never to return.
1 5 15
Only 3 years later, the theater got its name back on the façade, this time as one of the most popular cinemas in Amsterdam. The building has been used for concerts also, among the artist that have had performed were names like Edith Piaf, Marlene Dietrich, Judy Garland, Fast Domino, Dionne Warwick and many others. Nowadays, it is a place that thrills and impresses the tourists that pass by, at the same time is a lesson for the modern architects and a pride for the “Amsterdamers” that spent the rainy and windy evening in this mind-blowing place. No matter if you want to experience the Dutch lifestyle, to take your girl on one different cinema-date or just have a calm night at the movies – the Tuschinski Theater is a must-see place in Amsterdam.

utch is an official language in Netherlands, Suriname, Belgium (Flanders), Aruba, Saint Maarten, and Curaçao. It is also a regional minority language in the French Flanders. The language is West Germanic and is closely related to Low German and Afrikaans. You should consider leaning Dutch if you trade with the Dutch speakers, if you want at the EU, Union of South American Nations, and Benelux where it is an official language, if you intend to settle, to marry, and to school in a Dutch-speaking country, if you are planning on visiting a Dutch-speaking country, or if you simply want to learn a new language. There are several tips that will help you learn Dutch fast. You could learn Dutch the traditional way – by going to class. This is, however, only a good option if you have the time and the money. When you go to class, you will be guided by your teacher on the best reading materials and where to get Dutch resources. The interactions with your teacher and fellow students (in Dutch) will help you gain confidence fast. Another effective way of learning Dutch is buying books and English-Dutch dictionaries. The only drawback of this option is that you will not learn proper pronunciations. If you are adamant on teaching yourself the language, you could buy CD-based learning materials to help with pronunciations. The use of CD-based learning materials and other multimedia such as video guides, games, and quizzes is effective in helping you learn Dutch fast since it prevents boredom. Learning a new language can be frustrating. Take advantage of the Internet to learn Dutch fast. There are many online Dutch courses that you could enroll in. These courses are as structured as those in a traditional class. This option offers flexibility, anonymity, and cost benefits. You could also use the Internet to learn Dutch by joining a relevant online discussion forum. A forum that has Dutch students or Dutch speakers will help you practice. Immersion is one of the most effective ways of learning Dutch. If you are luck to live around, school with, or work with Dutch speakers, immerse yourself completely in the language. Speak in Dutch when around Dutch speakers and with time, you will start understanding what they are saying. Start with the basics (pronunciation, vowels, diphthongs and double vowels, consonants, definite and indefinite articles, personal pronouns, the verb ‘to be’, the verb ‘to have’, the question vorm, numerals, possessive adjectives) as this will make going deeper into the language easier. If you are going to have success learning Dutch, it is important that you be awake to the fact that the language has a reputation of being hard to master. This is despite the fact that Dutch has simpler grammar compared to other related languages such as German. Understanding the common challenges learners face when learning the language will help you know where you need to put effort. One reason why some people find learning the language a challenge is the fact that it is difficult for learners to reproduce Dutch words. There are many Dutch word couples (words made up of the same letters) whose meanings are completely different. In these words, only the vowel length is the difference. As an example, boom means tree in Dutch while bom means bomb. You should talk to native speakers and get feedback from them to help you realize your shortcomings. Like French and German, Dutch nouns have gender (feminine, masculine, and neuter). The genders have 2 articles, de and het. Many English speakers find it difficult to learn the different genders of nouns, which is important for the proper use of personal pronouns. Things are made worse by the fact that some nouns have more than one gender. To get through this challenge, you have to practice each and every day and to have a Dutch dictionary at hand. There rules when it comes to some nouns, but you should not attempt to fit into these rules if you want to learn the genders of different nouns by heart. When it comes to idioms, the Dutch language is very creative. One would be forgiven to think that the Dutch
deliberately use idioms to distinguish native speakers from foreign speakers of the language. Dutch idioms make it easy for you to understand daily conversation and/or
context, even when you understand the words individually. To overcome this challenge, be persistent in speaking with native speakers.
MEET TNLP: FASHION, DESIGN & CREATIVITY… ALL IN A BOX!

C
onveniently situated in the Jordaan, The New Label Project (TNLP) offers handmade clothes and unique accessories by emerging designers in a friendly, cozy setting. It all started about 2 years ago when Giulia, a fashion stylist and designer from Turin, realized her dream of having her own special store. Here’s what she told us about fashion, Amsterdam and why TNLP is more than just a shop. When did you first move to Amsterdam and why? I first moved here in 2005, coming from a very busy and hectic life in Milan where I was working as a fashion stylist and shoe designer. With Amsterdam, it was love at first sight! It’s got the magic vibe of huge cities like London and New York, but at the same time it’s extremely relaxing and easy to live in. I originally came for love, then love vanished, and... I’m still here! Do you enjoy living in Amsterdam? What are the things you miss most from Italy? I really like it here, I have the feeling that there is a tiny place for everyone in Amsterdam. It doesn’t matter who you are, where you are from, what you used to do and be... Here you can simply be and enjoy life. I have some trouble finding space here, I would say that’s the thing I miss most from my beloved Italy: huge squares (in my town, Turin, we have the largest baroque square in Europe), big streets, big houses... The typical Dutch narrow streets are cute and nice, but sometimes I really feel like I can’t breathe enough. On the other hand, I have never been privileged to live in a city with such a beautiful park as Vondelpark: best place ever! How long have you been involved with TNLP? TNLP is about to celebrate its 2nd anniversary, and I can’t tell you how excited I am! It all started 2 years ago together with my love at the time: You know when you have this dream, being a pilot, a singer, or a ballerina... Well, I dreamt for years and years about having my own store where I could sell a bit of everything and make it a cozy place where people could come in and spend some time browsing around, finding inspiration and have a moment of pure cheerfulness. We go too fast in our daily life, so I find it important sometimes to just slow down, admire things and let the mind wonder around. I studied fashion and textile in UK and always had a passion for making things by myself (it’s in my family blood). So this is how TNLP was born... Giving talented designers from all over the world the opportunity to be “boxed” in Amsterdam! Tell us a few things about TNLP and the kind of items people can expect to find there. TNLP’s motto is “creativity is connecting things”. This is exactly what I, together with my crew of designers, do every day: by displaying their handmade creations and offering them to customers, I create a bond between them. Inside every box you can find a small story about the brand or the designer. Each box has a different display and designers can customize it, making it their own little ‘shop inside the shop’. At TNLP you can find all kind of jewelry, from silver/gold to rubber/silicon and gem stones. Then we have bags, clothes, knitted garments, and home accessories like pillows (the cat pillow is a big hit!), ceramic dishes, lamps and vases, together with some beautiful art pieces like photos of Amsterdam and various illustrations. All this is surrounded by a very easy-going and relaxed atmosphere, some music and of course, being Italian, I’m always up for a chat! TNLP also organizes workshops. What exactly do these involve? Our workshops are called “learnshop” simply because this is exactly what you do when you join one: you learn a technique, you learn how to do something. And it is
actually a lot of fun, both for the designer who will be a teacher for one day, and the customers who love to create things. I remember the very first workshop a year and a half ago, where we had to make a house miniature by using felt, cotton, silk and cardboard. The result was so cute and everyone was so happy! We don’t want to teach something extremely complicated, but the idea is that you go home and make it again for your friends, as a gift or simply to decorate your house. And then we have jewel workshops, the most successful one being about polymer clay technique (we even use an oven inside the shop!). You have met lot of young designers. What is your experience of working with them? I feel extremely lucky and honored to work with all of them: they are young, talented and very easy to work with. At the base of our relation there is trust and respect for each other’s work, and of course lots of creativity and inspiration to make it a big success! I have designers that started with me almost 2 years ago, I see them pretty often and by now I consider them friends. I very much enjoy working with all of them, each one has got something special!
How do you find the Amsterdam fashion scene? After having experienced London and Milan, I sometimes find it a bit too extreme. I refer only to the Amsterdam Fashion Week, so what you see on catwalks. What I love and admire the most is when designers create something extremely cool but still wearable. We all love a 4-meter-long dress with tons of studs, lace and feathers, but at the end of the day we still have to be able to breathe, move, walk and sit. But if we’re talking about street style, how fashion really is on a daily basis... I just love it! Amsterdam is the greatest melting pot of styles, colors, and shapes; it’s very inspiring to walk around. What is the thing you love most about your work? I love waking up each and every day full of happiness and excitement about what the day at TNLP will bring! I also love to have people from all over the world visiting the store. Immediately after launching the shop, I remember meeting customers from Canada, Australia, Japan, UK, Brazil, people who shared with me a tiny part of their journey, their feelings about the city, about the shop… How cool is this? And of course I love the trustful collaboration I have with my designers. I feel extremely lucky to have all their beautiful creations here at TNLP.

Celine (left)and Isaa (right) from the Netherlands: You can spot nice things here on the streets of Amsterdam. It’s divers. Celine: My style depends on my mood and on the weather ofcourse! Isaa: My style is though, different.
Johan from the Netherlands: I like the style in Amsterdam, it’s innovative. My style is sporty and classic.
Augustina from Lithuania: I don’t think the style in Amsterdam is really good, although there are good places. I wear whatever I like
PIETER CEIZER: TYPOGRAPHY ARTIST TURNED FASHION DESIGNER
2 1 21
A
msterdam born typography artist Pieter Ceizer recently collaborated with New Era to produce a Capsule Collection, currently being exhibited at colette in Paris. Ed Little, caught up with him while on his year abroad in Amsterdam to get his views on music, fashion and creativity. 1. You got into typography aged 11 at your local skate spot. What was it about graffiti and youth culture that spawned your interest? “At the old Museumplein I got inspired by graffiti writers, who did pieces on the back of the half pipe. I liked the fact that they made stuff where, when and how they wanted. Plus I was fascinated by all the letters and colours, by the early 90s graffiti was kinda new and fresh you know.” 2. You been involved in street art for 9 years now, what do you believe to be the core essences of this art form? “The core essence is the artist’s self chosen-freedom to make what you want, where you want and when you want.” 3. Do you have any interesting tagging stories from when you were younger? “Once I got caught by the police, while doing a piece, they took my spray cans & sketch and brought me to the police station. The officer put the sketch on the table, but upside down, and asked me what was written. I told him something random like S130, he carefully filled in his form.” 4. Your designs usually seem to be very positive and forward looking especially ones like ‘Everything’s Gonna Be Great’, ‘Chase Your Dreams’ and ‘Wake Up’. Is there any political meaning or social commentary underlying these sentiments? “To me it’s fun to play with words and make quotes or phrases like that. Basically I think people are mostly driven be fear instead of love, also I want to promote freedom and I want people to think for themselves. But not all my work is only positive or empowering, also humour is important aspect. I don’t want to preach to people, I just want to give them some candy for the mind.” 5. Where do you draw inspiration from and who are your favourite street artists? “I’m inspired by vintage typography, soap packaging from 1890 stuff like that, way back when lettering was a real craft. Also graphic design was really made to make a product or message more appealing and communicate straight to the client. I like this direct approach.” 6. ‘Anything you believe and your mind can conceive you can achieve’ is beautifully poetic and is reminiscent of books like Paulo Coelho’s ‘The Alchemist’. Do you have any particular literary interests that aid your creativity? “Not these books actually. I love the work of Dutch writer and painter Jan Cremer, to me it represents freedom and believing in yourself.” 7. How did the Pieter Ceizer x Colette Capsule collection happen? “Colette have been selling my clothing for two or three years now. Last year they asked me to make the first ‘t-shirt of the month’, they sold out within 24 hours, a few months later I came to the store personally and I showed some more of my sketches and ideas, we talked exchanged more ideas and organically this resulted into a capsule collection.” 8. You’ve described what you do as ‘typofunk’ relating visual typographic elements to music? What kind of music do you like and who are your favourite artists? “I like funky stuff. I’m fan of Zapp & Roger, Ohio Players, Kleeer and stuff like that.” 9. We have seen the hip-hop world collide with the fashion world with niche brands emerging off the back off Kanye West, A$AP Rocky and Kendrick Lamar. Is it exciting to bring street art to fashion?
“I don’t think of myself as a street artist actually. I evolved from the street into a typographical artist. I just bring as specific form of typography and philosophy to (street) fashion.”
able to provide jobs and evolve. I guess that’s good. As an artist, fan, lover or even hater, you always have to judge for yourself what you like and what you feel is original, fun or fresh, no matter how big or small the culture is.
10. How has establishing a fashion brand helped you? “Well, t-shirts helped as a medium to spread & share my ideas and designs with others.”
12. Around Amsterdam I have seen some ‘Sellout’ & ‘Fuck Art’ tags. If directed your way, how would you respond? ............... (No answer – Keep it Hush)
11. Over the last decade street art has become increasingly popular. Pieces are now being sold and exhibited in galleries, documentaries have been made and books published. Is this a good thing for street art or does it denigrate authenticity? I have no opinion on what’s good for street art, I don’t really care. I guess a lot of subcultures got bigger, so the culture is
13. Do you still do art in the street? Or is it predominantly commercial now? I don’t do stuff in the street anymore. My work is not only commercial right now. Most of the time I make only what I wanna make and I don’t care if it will sell big time or small time or not at all. To put everything out there is my main mission, how or how much is secondary.
