the Amsterdo team In case you are toying with the idea of visiting Amsterdam, there is no better time to do it than in the summertime. For one thing, you have a sunny chance of escaping the notorious gray rainy days, and for another, Amsterdam plays host to various festivals as also other events that let you have a close-up glimpse of the inimitable Dutch culture. Once you arrive in our native city, you’ll find that you can find company in the form of the largest tourist throngs of the year 2013. As every seasoned tourist knows, if you are ready to share the city and endure long lines at attractions, you are sure to be rewarded with pleasant weather, long days, and myriads of outdoor festivals and other activities. With café terraces on every block,10 p.m. sunsets, eating and people-watching alfresco, you’re assured of exciting moments. Summer is a good time for a visit to the beaches and Amsterdam is blessed with two kinds: the natural and the manmade. The only difference is that for the former you rush to the north coast and the latter within the confines of the city, take your pick. You can make a day trip to one of those coastal beaches and join the hip crowds at the many notorious beach clubs and live it up, far into the night. And if you feel lazy and don’t want to leave the city because of all its cultural attractions, or you’re short on time, then you can make it to a man-made beach right at the heart of the city. It’s something like having your cake and eat it too. But remember! Amsterdam flights and accommodations prices are at their highest in summer and don’t usually go down until around September. This is the height of the season, and you should book your flight tickets and accommodations at least a couple of months in advance, if not earlier. Welcome to our welcoming city and enjoy yourself as you’ve never enjoyed before. So have a nice trip and a great holiday in Amsterdam.

AMSTERDAM GAY PRIDE 2013

T

he city of Amsterdam have always been liberalminded and enlightened enough through the years, in its encouragement for providing a secure and welcome environment for lesbians and gays as a place to live in, as well as to visit. The city has a long history of tolerance towards such people, whose way of life is considered highly controversial, and as such frowned upon by many. And Amsterdammers have always been at the vanguard in encouraging equality for this different community.

theme and the theme of 2013 is “Reflect”, in an effort to encourage reflection on the launch of the unique LGBT movement as also the enduring importance of diversity.

GREAT TERRACES OF AMSTERDAM

T

he sun shines brightly only for a few months in Amsterdam. Under the circumstances, it is only natural that, when sunshine finally breaks through the grey clouds during spring as also in summer, the whole city emerges as if from hiding, to take advantage of the warm weather and enjoy a drink or two alfresco at the city’s many terraces. Due to Amsterdam’s northern location, the city is blessed with very long summer days, with the sun setting as late as 10:00 PM at the beginning of summer. During these extralong days, basking in the sun, holding a drink in one’s hand can be city’s favorite summer pastime, so that it might not be possible to get a table at the very first outdoor café you come across. So it is always better to have a few choices before venturing outdoors to have your favorite drink on a sunny terrace. Here are a few tips for finding that perfect terrace bathed in warm sunlight and a drink in store with you in mind:

Terrace at Restaurant Daalder

One of the finest terraces in Amsterdam is Restaurant Daalder is conveniently situated on the scenic Lindengracht at the heart of Jordaan district. It boasts of a Dutch traditional bar, patronized mainly by young hipsters. The menu provides something for everyone, with fresh and biological ingredients. With the arrival of Guillaume de Beer, the new chef, there is a clear change in the menu which has become very elaborate. Now, the emphasis is on a menu that contains many items remaining on the card for many months, rather than a menu featured with a few dishes and changed rapidly. Chef de Beer likes to surprise the guests with dishes done to perfection.

Lobby at Nes 49

The Lobby is part of the famed Hotel V Nesplein, a place for the local inhabitant and overseas visitors to converge and meet. It features a fine restaurant offering Dutch, gastropub and international cuisine, a striking wood fireplace, and a scenic terrace right adjoining Nes Square, and a mini stage for events. The Lobby focuses on providing premium quality dishes as well as drinks duly served in an unassuming manner by the funky staff, to make your stay a memorable experience. Terraces in central Amsterdam The heart of Amsterdam is full of the finest outdoor options, if you have a good idea as to where to look. The most evident locations are of course the vast open squares such as the Leidseplein, Spui and Rembrandtplein. But, if you’d rather prefer one with a real local flavor, begin looking in the notso-apparent side streets. If you want to find a terrace with a fine water view, try visiting the extensive terrace of Café van Zuylen on the Singel or the delightful Café ‘t Gasthuys discreetly located close to the main shopping area. Then there is the quaint De Jaren equipped with twin levels of tables offering splendid sights of the Amstel, whereas the sublime terrace of Zouthaven will make you feel that you are afloat on the IJ. NeL, located down the Utrechtsestraat, provides you with the peaceful ambiance of a picturesque square full of shady trees. Then there is the Nieuwmarkt which is surrounded by scores of cafes, with the fashionable In de Waag in the center of the square. Finally, there is the Vondelpark, the ideal setting to spend an idle afternoon. This scenic boasts of no less than four cafés with wide terraces, that included the ‘t Blauwe Theehuis. Other perfect terraces include Westerkerk at Werck in the Jordaan, the traditional surroundings of Café ‘t Smalle or Café Thijssenwander near Noordermarkt, a favorite with the locals.

Amsterdam Zuid and De Pijp

Located near the Heineken, the Marie Heinekenplein area there are several cafés in the square itself. In the middle of de Pijp near to Albert Cuypmarkt, there is Gerard Douplein, the favorite meeting place of De Pilsvogel. Or you can take a short walk to the Sarphaat or Krull to enjoy the scenery

of Sarphatipark. Near Museumplein you can find the large terrace of Wildschut right on Roelof Hartplein or the peaceful upscale terrace of The College Hotel. And if you can make it to Zuid, the Gent provides delicious snacks at calm quiet waterside locale at the back of the Vondelpark.

Amsterdam Oost

There are some remarkable terraces situated on the banks of Amstel River, with De Ysbreeker and Hesp providing the finest vistas and a lot of tables. Seen from the entrance, none would even suspect that the Canvas situated on the Wibautstraat has an extensive terrace high up the 7th floor. Close to the Tropenmuseum, along the Linnaeusstraat and adjoining the Oosterpark, there are a plethora of fine eateries such as Café Museum, East of Eden, Pata Negra 2 as well as De Biertuin. On the other side of Oost, Brouwerij ‘t can offer you a typical Amsterdam experience as it is situated in a windmill, from where guests can lounge alfresco sipping the organic beers that are brewed in situ.

Amsterdam West

A sure-fire bet for a sunny day in West is the Westergasfabriek. This sprawling park and cultural area has a number of great

spots for cold drinks in the sun, including Pacific Parc, the WestergasTerras and Toko MC. On the corner of the Marnixstraat, newcomer Brandstof is always full of goodlooking locals, while just down the street Soundgarden attracts a more rock & roll crowd on their relaxed waterside patio hiding behind the bar. At the start of the Postjesweg, Edel is a rare find with a waterside terrace that wraps around the building.

Amsterdam Noord

Jump on one of the free ferries to Amsterdam Noord for the best views of the IJ River. This up-and-coming district is hiding quite a few gems, including the brand new EYE Film Museum with a long narrow terrace on the first floor. By the NDSM Wharf, you’ll find IJ-Kantine’s terrace right by the ferry landing, while Noorderlicht is located in a former greenhouse just a five-minute walk away. By the Buiksloterweg ferry stop you’ll find De Pont and the Tolhuistuin, both with plenty of outdoor seating. Further down the banks of the river you’ll discover Wilhelmina Dok, with more tables outside than inside and memorable meals and snacks. A bit further into Noord, it’s worth seeking out Café ‘t Sluisje – with a quaint village atmosphere, it’s hard to believe you’re still in the big city!

LASER 3.14 TAGS YOUR BODY

I

f you’re used to wondering around the city with eyes wide open, it is more than likely that you’ve come across the street art of Laser 3.14. The anonymous Dutch street artist frequently uses temporar y sites like builder’s boards and construction fences for his creations, tr ying to “utilize the city as his canvas”. While Laser 3.14’s passion for graffiti developed early on, he has also experimented with sketching, comic production, illustrations, and poetr y. What is more, his latest collaboration with the acclaimed design agency Tjep. has led to an impressive collection of body graffiti jewelr y featuring his eponymous tags in silver, gold and titanium. Using the latest industrial 3D production techniques, this limited-edition series features necklaces that are produced out of solid titanium and hung on a silver cord. Dutch designer Frank Tjepkema, founder of Tjep., was already fascinated by Laser’s work before the two of them met each other: “I was literally walking around with a screwdriver ready to unscrew one of his works from a construction site fence. I had spotted the text ‘ Why are you reading this?’, which in an urban context really pulls away the ground from below your feet, existentially speaking... In any case, when my friend Mark Chalmers from The Garage galler y introduced me to Laser 3.14, I didn’t have to unscrew or steal one of his works from the streets of Amsterdam. I just asked him to tag the wall of my studio, and this is now one of his ver y few works on a permanent wall! One thing brought another and a complete jewelr y collection signed Laser 3.14 is now right at the heart of the Tjep.collection.” See the entire Laser 3.14 jewelr y collection: www.tjep.com

LAI & WAI T

his is the first thing that comes to mind when you get a chance to hear the story of the seemingly ordinary place, told by its most recent owners. The spot itself, on which the bistro is located, has carried the spirit of the Asian culture for some time now, since the predecessors of Lai & Wai were a Chinese and a Korean restaurant. And what makes Lai & Wai so special – it offers both Chinese and Korean food. In fact it also offers Vietnamese, Japanese and Indonesian dishes – the most renowned and famous offerings of the East, cooked with fresh vegetables and true Asian craftsmanship. A true opportunity for the Dutch gastronomical traveler to reach in on place the gentle aroma of distant Asia. The touch for managing restaurants apparently runs in the family – in our interview the owner told us, the story of his father – a true connoisseur of the art of running a successful restaurant that offers not only a tasty dish, but also an authentic experience of the Asian culinary mastery to its customers. This is closely related to the success of the place – it is soaked in a warm family atmosphere that just pours into the traveller, walking in for the first time –probably because of the fact that most of the people working there are actually family Korean, Vietnamese and Chinese – calmly doing their work with love and dedication. Some are probably wondering how an Asian restaurant can survive in such a place, especially near to Central Station. Well, as the owner said in our interview – “Life is all about risks”. By finding

Lai & Wai – an Asian restaurant that makes a difference. the right match between authenticity and modern motives, the owners have managed to draw the attention of the people crossing the lively streets of Amsterdam. The interior is a perfect example of that - the main space is completely redesigned by the owners, who have chosen a more modern look of the place. Soft brown colors and romantic mute lighting create a sense of comfort and relaxation and the giant aquarium in the middle contributes to

that atmosphere. Last but not least is the charming partner of the owner - she actually bonds with the people outside in free-hearted chatter about the virtues of the Asian cuisine bringing a gentle whiff from the distant East. This is Lai & Wai – a bridge made of tasty experiences and fragrant odors that gently takes you to a journey to the East, with the silent promise of the exotic savor whiffling around the place.

AMSTERDAM: THE CYCLING CITY A

msterdam is perhaps the most bicycle-friendly city on earth. As you watch the Amsterdammers whizz past you at unimaginable speeds perched on their flimsy-looking pedaling machines, it might seem to you that they are born right on their very bicycles. All this frantic bicycling is made possible by a plethora of bike paths that criss-cross the city and even beyond. It is then that you realize that the only thing you ever require, to come across all the gems of this amazing city, is pedaling power.

Amsterdam, the cycling city

The historic city center of Amsterdam, circa 17th Century, is full of narrow winding streets and as such not a suitable area for traveling by an automobile. Under the circumstances, cyclists and pedestrians have a definite advantage. No wonder most of the people living in the area consider their bikes the only reliable means of transport. With a whopping 400 km of bicycle paths that can take you almost anywhere in town, it’s no wonder that Amsterdam is a true cycling city.

When in Amsterdam do as…

In Amsterdam almost all residents have their own bikes. With 600,000 bikes in a metropolis comprising of around 750,000 inhabitants, there are nearly as many bicycles as people. Couriers, police officers, and at times even Prime Ministers can be seen on two wheels, and visitors are often amazed at all those multi-storey bicycle racks. Actually, hiring a bicycle is an excellent way to explore the city, and for many visitors an adventure in itself. A bicycle can be cheaper and faster than even public transport, and by discovering the glories of Amsterdam astride a bicycle enables you take in more in one day, while having the pleasure of being one with the locals.

Renting a bike

It is possible for you to rent a bike from nearly everywhere in Amsterdam. Bicycle hire companies are aplenty near the main transport hubs like the Central Station, Dam Square and Leidseplein. You can have a short term rental ranging from three hours with the average cost for a whole day around 8 Euros. Some companies hire out various kinds of

bikes such as touring bikes, tandems, kid’s bikes and even kick-scooters. If you feel adventurous and go for long distances, it is better to hire a scooter or moped. Or if you want to leave terra firma and try to make it on water instead, then paddling around the city’s famous canals either in a pedal boat or just a pedalo can be fun. In this way, you can explore an entirely different aspect of Amsterdam, you aren’t even aware of.

Biking tours

Another great way to discover all the top sights of Amsterdam is astride a bike, led ably by a seasoned guide. This will save you a lot of time and effort as you don’t have to wander here and there at random in an unfamiliar city. Or if you prefer a quiet and tranquil excursion, a tour of the Dutch countryside by pedaling along past the proverbial windmills through broad, green pastures can be a deeply satisfying experience. Then there are companies that even provide individual themed tours, like a Jordaan tour, or a simple picnic tour.

Safe cycling tips

If you are not accustomed to the kind of traffic prevailing in Amsterdam, cycling within its confines can become rather

chaotic! So here are a few tips on bicycling the city. While biking along, remain in your particular lane on the right of the road, clearly marked in white lines as well as bike symbols. Keep up with traffic signs and lights in general and refrain from biking on pavements, footpaths, shopping streets and motorways. Put your hand out when making a turning, as a signal. It is necessary to keep a wary eye on traffic as you can see scooters zipping down the bicycle lanes, taxis hurry down the tram rails, and huge delivery vans jostling for space to maneuver can find it difficult to make you out, if you happened to be in their particular blind spots. It is not wise to pedal with more than two persons across and if you do, give room to other cyclists, and pull over to one side to check a map or answer the phone. And be careful about tram rails, as your tires can easily get stuck in the rails, so cross them only at sharp angles. While pedaling at night, the law requires you to use the front as well as the rear lights of your machine. Since bike thefts are a common thing in Amsterdam, lock your bicycle up to an immovable and secure object, such as a bicycle rack. And last but not least, never try to imitate the Dutch as they are infamous for breaking rules. They think nothing of pedaling at night sans any light and passing through red lights.

A LA FERME, A TOUCH OF FRANCE A

cknowledged to be one of the best in the world, the steady rise of French cuisine reached its zenith during the old regime (ancien rĂŠgime, French), when Paris used to be the seat of European culture, in all its glory. Cooks from all over the world found there a place to practice their craft, and contributed greatly to the French cooking art, leaving behind recipes, skilled students and whole guides of their expertise. Now the times have changed, as talented cooks can prove their mastery almost everywhere. While walking along the multicultural streets of cities like Amsterdam, you can often feel the gastronomical touch of so many cultures and French culture is no exception. There are several spots from where you can introduce yourself to the traditional dishes of France, where you can actually feel the true whiff of the many centuries of French culinary experience. As culinary connoisseurs ourselves, we from Amsterdo would like to tell you about such a place. It is called A La Ferme (at the Farm), located on the typical, quaint Dutch street at Govert Flinckstraat, 251. The atmosphere of the place is felt at the very beginning, as you enter though the doors, hospitably wide open. Then the tired visitor immediately feels the ambient comfort radiating from the interior. The soft lights, earthy brown wooden floors, velvet fabrics in soft colors create a truly cozy mood, while the remarkable pictures on the walls, with motifs related to farms, conveys the message in a simple, yet stylish and effective interior. On your way, you have a good chance of coming across the cheerful owner, Mr.Ben van Geelen who, in spite of being the busy executive chef, is always happy to meet his guests. In the warm ambience of the restaurant we realized that, apart from being a master chef, the proprietor is also an excellent speaker who shared some of the experiences of his life. He told us of how he happened to chose the profession of a chef at a very young age, a long time ago. Hearing the call of a culinary career, he did not waste any time and started practicing his chosen profession at the tender age of fourteen. In the process, he got a chance to work and learn from some of the most experienced chefs of the time. And as free spirits like him often do at some point or other in their lives, he decided to travel, and made it to the distant Mozambique with his wife, where he had a chance to hone his culinary skills and begin a new and exciting way of life. After gaining some more valuable experience, and the satisfaction of having come across a new culture, Ben returned to his native land and to Amsterdam. It was then that he was struck by the important realization, that he had to do something more than that he was doing then. His simple philosophy of striving to achieve what brings him pleasure, along with what he could do in practice, led him

to choose the right goal for all his expertise, the chance of doing something positive for him and his family, in short the establishing of his very own restaurant, his life’s dream. Now, after four and a half years in business, and as the proprietor with twenty-six years of rich culinary experience behind him, A La Farme has became a reality, and had earned the reputation of being one of the finest French restaurants in Amsterdam. And what is the secret of this reputation, apart from the renowned mastery of his cooks? Just one secret! Well, not entirely a secret, as Ben proudly shared it with us and his other guests an extremely remarkable fact: every single dish at La Ferme remains homemade. Everything, from the piquant, complex sauces made from the right ingredients, to the warm loaves of freshly baked bread, everything is created within the confines of the famed restaurant, on the spot. He visits the surrounding farms, from where he get his supplies of cheese and other dairy products, to ensure that his clientele has nothing but the best, fresh from the farm.

However, as they say on TV, there was more. Ben explained something rather extraordinary about the meat he serves. It comes in the form of the actual animal, with he himself entering the role of a butcher in order to choose the choicest parts to be cooked for his customers. So, if you are visiting the restaurant and start wondering how come your meal is so fresh and succulent, remember that the watchful eye of the owner has chosen the very best. After we heard all this, we asked Mr. Van Geelen whether he had plans to expand his business at which he smiled genially and said no. For he himself is the restaurant and how could he split himself into so many new restaurants? He attends to even to the most trivial tasks, and always tries to get in touch with the clients, to let them bask in the culinary atmosphere he has so thoughtfully created for them, and the simple satisfaction of doing things by means of his labor. As he said, people expect him to be there always, with a welcoming smile, ready to recommend what would best suit their palates.

BEACHES OF AMSTERDAM

T

he Netherland’s shoreline consists of one long single continuous beach of finely grained hoary sands that stretches for hundreds of kilometers in a north south direction, from the Wadden Islands to Zeeland. These beaches have a backdrop of beautiful, undulating sand dunes that are essential to protect the country from floods. Ironically, not many visitors are aware that there are beaches around Amsterdam, and when they hear of them, they are surprised. Well it’s true, there are indeed beaches around Amsterdam and let’s has a peep at them.

Urban beaches

Strand West is an extensive beach that is open all through the seasons, although the outdoor activities in general get away, only while the weather is sunny and bright. This beach offers a panoramic view. You can lounge in a hammock doing nothing, sip your favorite cocktail, have a tapas for snacks or play a game or two of beach volleyball. There is also the Blijburg aan Zee, a city beach near Amsterdam, where you can really swim. Another famous beach is Strand Zuid which is located just behind the RAI Convention Centre. Actually it is a series of restaurants and cafes interconnected by strips of white sand and a boardwalk. There you can unwind sitting on lounge chairs, sipping your favorite cold drinks and enjoy the fine food, and listening to the DJs playing the decks.

Coastal beaches

Zandvoort: A famous white sandy beach, situated at Zandvoort, it is a scenic beach much sought after by visitors. The wavy sand dunes and the grey-blue sea forms as it at were, a superb nature reserve where visitors can go for various water sports or just laze in the soothing ambience. Zandvoort is only a mere 20 minutes away by train from Amsterdam’s famous landmark, the Central Station. Bloemendaal: Bloemendaal is a gem among the beaches located along the Dutch coast, and is favored highly by the fashionable sun-worshippers. If you feel like a change from the bustling Bloemendaal to somewhere more quiet and peaceful, you can move north to the lovely beach

pavilion, the area where you can sunbathe in the nude. There is a railway station in Bloemendaal with convenient train timings to Amsterdam. Or you can hop on a train to Zandvoort from Amsterdam Central and board an no.81 bus to Bloemendaal. The Zuid-Kennemerland National Park: A scenic break from the hustle and bustle of modern life, this park is abundantly blessed with natural beauty, and lies sedately along the sea in the Randstad region. You can stroll or bike over the wavy sand dunes, and just take it easy on the coastline. There is an excellent hotel with a country-house ambience named the Landgoed Duin & Kruidberg very close to the incomparable park.

surfer

IJmuiden aan Zee: With its extensive sandy beach, this is by far the widest beach to be found in the Netherlands. By moving beyond the chief access areas, you can have the pleasure of finding long stretches of empty beaches, all to yourself. Since this beach is often windy, it is popular for windsurfing as well as flying kites. The easiest way to make

it to IJmuiden aan Zee is to get aboard the Fast Flying Ferry from Amsterdam. Further information can be had from the IJmuiden aan Zee website. Wijk aan Zee: This place has a close-knit community and you can have a highly enjoyable laid-back day at this beach. The lovely Timboektoe beach pavilion offers something for all. On Saturdays there is live music and on Sundays there are sand sculpture contests for children and yoga. In case you’re crazy for adventure, go on a paragliding spree here. To reach this fun place, take the train Amsterdam – Beverwijk, then hop on bus no.78. Beaches in the Heemskerk region: If you’re one who is not seeking a fun place, but wants lots of peace and quiet, rent a bike from Beverwijk and make it to the dune-lined setting that is lies on the west of Heemskerk. Moving further northwest, you can reach Egmond aan Zee, yet another scenic dune-lined beach, popular with walkers. A large part of the well-known PWN Egmond Half Marathon takes place here, every January. Regular trains are available to Alkmaar and Beverwijk from Amsterdam and from there catch bus no.165 to Egmond aan Zee.

Sundaytillwednesday @Sugarfactory

Wicked Jazz Sounds Clubnight every Sunday at Sugarfactory. For more than 10 years DJs and musicians have been playing together on a danceable mix of soul, hip hop, jazz, funk, house, drum & bass. Making you dance with a Smile!

S

ome of you may have known for a while, but for others this may be new: since last year, Sugarfactory has been open for clubnights 7 days a week! This was all possible after a small renovation, during which the intermediate space between the entrance and the stage was reconstructed into an independent room, with its own bar, lighting and sound system. Programmed with a wide range of highly interesting bands and great nights to have a drink and do a dance, all throughout the week! Against very reasonable prices of course, because we feel going out in the weekends is expensive enough. Join us in the early eve for bands such as Chad Valley, A Balladeer and Skip & Die but also book presentation and cabaret shows. The club nights vary from R&B and Hip Hop to Dubstep, Drum and Bass, Deep House and Garage. Curious? Come by Sugarfactory on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday and experience it yourself! Trust us, going out during the week has never been as much fun. “Off from work tomorrow, teacher called in sick, or are you a tourist visiting the city for some leisure time? Sugarfactory is the place to go!

THE RENOVATED RIJKSMUSEUM OPENS ITS DOORS

O

riginally opened in 1885, the monumental Rijksmuseum was designed by the architect Pierre Cuypers. After more than a century of intensive use, its massive building was in need of a complete makeover. Its lengthy renovation (which lasted 10 years and cost no less than 375 million euros) is now finished and, as of last April, the new Rijksmuseum has opened its doors to the public. Having faced many technical challenges, the architects have tried to restore Cuypers’ original layout and ensure that the museum presents once again a coherent whole. Besides, the new Rijksmuseum is now a fully modern building with new facilities, climate-control for better preservation of the exhibited art, and security features in line with today’s requirements. The new Rijksmuseum features more than 8,000 artistic and historical objects spanning across 800 years of Dutch history, from 1200 right up to the present. Visitors are invited to wander through its 80 galleries and take part in a fantastic journey from the late Middle Ages to the present day, where particular attention is paid to highlights of Dutch art and history. Among the museum’s highlights is the world-renowned Night Watch by Rembrandt van Rijn, which is placed back in its old position at the centre of the building. Next to the magnificent Gallery of Honour, the Front Hall, and the Night Watch Gallery, the new Rijksmuseum also offers a small but attractive Asian collection which is on display in the newly added Asian Pavilion. Surrounded by water, the Pavilion can be seen from Museumstraat, its natural-stone and glass façade contrasting with the red bricks of the main building. The renovated Rijksmuseum has the capacity to welcome between 1.5 – 2 million visitors each year. Do not miss out on the unique opportunity to be one of them.

ome summer, Amsterdam Zuidoost is transformed magically into a wonderland of vibrant colors and as such the place to be in during the bright season. And the one event that contributes most of the color is the Kwaku Summer Festival, known formerly as Kwakoe Festival. This vibrant festival returns every year to Bijlmerpark and last continuously through four weekends of multicultural celebrations beginning from July 13 to August 4, 2013. In fact the Kwaku Festival is considered to be the largest ever multicultural festival that takes place in the Netherlands. It is celebrated every Saturday as well as Sunday, lasts from 10 in the morning to 8 in the evening, during the summer months of July and August. It is held in the Bijlmerpark, a well-known landmark of southeast Amsterdam. For six heady weekends long, the organization that conducts the festival provides a highly extensive program that consists of (live) movies, music, dancing, sports, food, and meetings as also information. The Festival takes on a different theme each year and this distinct theme is clearly reflected performances, music, literature, art, along with several elections.

Kwaku: a people’s festival

This year this inimitable festival is going into the 37th edition, as a time-honored multicultural congregation with its focus on drawing diverse people and their unique cultures together for bring about a dynamic blend of dance, music, food, drink, and sport. The origins of the Kwaku Festival can be traced to the celebration of the ending of slavery in the Dutch colonies of the Dutch Antilles and Suriname on July 1, 1863. The name of the festival said to be derived from the statue erected in order to honor that historic event.

Kwaku Festival: Something for everyone

This distinctive cultural and ethnic festival usually draws nearly 300,000 visitors during the course four consecutive weekends, transforming it into one of the largest events on Amsterdam’s calendar. Every weekend, the center of attraction is the bigger stages, making available a fun feast of live music, DJs as also dance workshops. During the festival there is traditionally a huge Caribbean bazaar as well as an area catered solely for all the younger visitors, including a lot of familyfriendly entertainment through the whole day.

Football and delicious food

One of the major attractions of the Kwaku Summer Festival is its vast array of street vendors selling various items of food, and many of these culinary delicacies are found only at the time of this regular annual event. From succulent ribs soaked in exotic Sauce Surinamese, to zesty Korean tacos which can make your tongue really tingle, or stalls that are right out of Africa and the Middle East, you are sure to discover delicious dishes from all around the world. Another major constituent of the program of this exciting summer festival is the Kwaku Cup which is something that attracts numerous football teams from many nationalities as well as ages. These teams compete intensely all through the festival to win the much coveted trophy. The great thing about all this is the fact that literally anyone is free to form a team and join the fray! There are many who take part in this unique festival every year without fail, as they feel that it is the experience of a lifetime, repeated every year. A minimal 2.50 Euros is charged as entrance fee for the Kawaka Festival and it is always wise to carry some extra cash to indulge in a meal or two as well as in the many other attractions that are to be found there. For more information, you can visit the Kawaka Festival website.
