‘Involve’ is a youth service based in the Parkside area of Ballina. It is run by coordinator, Alice Dixon, and youth leaders, James and Keith Maughan. Involve Youth Services was set up in 1996. The initial idea came from a group of local parents in the Parkside area who were concerned about the lack of services available for their children. The parents from the Parkside took it upon themselves to set up a youth club, and with input from their children, Involve Youth Services Ballina was born. Through hard work and commitment from parents, children and volunteers, along with government funding, the youth club has grown to what it is today. SERVICES Based at Lower Lord Edward Street, Ballina, the services provided are as follows: art club, cooking, drop-in service, horse riding, soccer, karaoke and they even manage to run a two weeks summer camp in July. Anyone can get involved and their founding target is working with the young traveller community, but welcome all people from all sectors of the community.

YOUTH PROJECT Speaking with Keith and James Maughan they both agree that their favourite part of the job is helping the youth to progress and encouraging them towards education and employment in a safe and fun environment. They also enjoy seeing them achieve and make something of themselves and it gives them great satisfaction when they see someone they mentored secure themselves good employment. LIFE SKILLS Cooking classes for boys takes place on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 7.30. The classes are facilitated by Marie Rice, who is a nutritional therapist. Marie has an interest in educating people on the importance of

healthy eating for both mental and physical health. She also does shopping tours, where she teaches clients how to read food labels, making them aware of the dangers of processed foods and the importance of being buyer aware when they’re doing weekly shopping. Marie said she got the idea for doing these classes after working with clients who had little or no cooking skills and had little or no idea about the dangers of processed prepacked food. Initially only a few people attended her class, but as word spread and interest grew the attendance also grew. The classes are good fun with the belief that everyone can cook – it’s just a matter of giving it a go and not being afraid to experiment. The children and teenagers are encouraged to suggest dishes that they enjoy and when they come up with a healthy version of it the children are always shocked by the revelation that healthy eating is delicious and not all boring. Marie’s hope is to instill a love of cooking and to encourage the children and teenagers to take control of their own health. The cooking classes are designed to promote healthy eating among people of all

ages and for the them to have fun while meeting new people and learning a lifelong skill with a few laughs along the way COACHING Speaking of new experiences, Involve Youth Club ran a GAA Foundation Coaching course for the Parkside area, which was funded by Mayo North East SICAP, and facilitated by Micheal Fitzmorris. Coaching is a powerful emerging profession, the value of which is being increasingly recognised by

ipb pride of place 2018 individuals and organisations throughout the world. Coaching is a professional relationship which facilities performance and the learning development of people. It is about improving effectiveness and achieving results. It focuses on measurable steps of success. Coaching is supportive and challenging and it aims to help people clarify what they want out of life – to set goals – to achieve what they want to achieve, and meet challenges effectively along the way. Coaching is a partnership that takes place within a space of trustee safety and challenge. In essence coaching is a catalyst for success. The aim of the GAA Foundation Coaching course was to provide the Parkside community with an insight into the game, in how it’s played, and how you can coach to better support the development of future players. The foundation award is the introductory award for coaches of Gaelic games. The course is aimed at beginner coaches and enabled participants to assist a coach and the organisation in its activities. The course was ran over two days and covered four key modules, as well as introductory and conclusion modules. The four main modules were introduction to the games, skill development, movement skills and coaching children, youth and adults. Some of the participants who took part in the course went to the youth club themselves as a child, while others volunteer with the youth club. This course gave the participants the chance to assist with coaching within the youth club and carrying on what they learned as a child, and also to better support the development of future players in the club.

VOLUNTEERS ‘Involve’ needs parents to continue encouraging their children to use the amenities available to them, and if your free to volunteer, for few hours a week, please contact ‘Involve’ who will be more than happy to have you on board.

Looking towards the future – plans are being put in place to run a FAI foundation level coaching course, including first aid and sports injury. If you would like to take part please contact Involve.

Tús Supervisor Q. CAN YOU GIVE ME A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF YOUR JOB AS A TÚS SUPERVISOR? A. My task as a supervisor is the management of the Tús Scheme in the North Mayo area. My role also includes the identification of work placements in community organisations and setting. I am also responsible for the recruitment / placement of participants, task specific training including health and safety, and manual handling. Q. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF BEING A SUPERVISOR WITH TÚS? A. Wow it is hard to narrow it down to just one favourite thing. The diverse nature of my scheme / project makes my job most interesting. For example environment services, social media management, clerical support, heritage, sport and cultural and retail service, media. I certainly love the people – the high calibre of participants on the scheme and volunteers across the various community groups.

Q. WHAT PATH DID YOU TAKE TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY? A. From very early I volunteered in my local community in various social enterprise services. I am currently a coach with my local GAA club and chairperson of our Residents Association. When I graduated from college I wanted to work in the community developing community projects. Q. WHAT ARE YOUR TOP THREE PRIORITIES FOR 2018? l To continue to provide experience for TUS participant’s l To continue to develop projects that meet the needs of participant’s l To continue to support our Community Q. WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT ACHIEVEMENT YOU HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH IN YOUR CURRENT ROLE? A. In the past I have helped people into employment and training this

was as a result of experience from the TUS programme. I hope to continue this trend into the future. Q. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A TUS PARTICIPANT? A. l It’s important to keep an open mind about the future. l Don’t be afraid to propose ideas to the community group where you work. l Use the year on TUS to explore other skills. Q. WHAT DO YOUR THINK IS THE PRIMARY VALUE OF COMMUNITY AND VOLUNTARY ORGANISATIONS? A. The voluntary organisations are the fundamental ingredient of any community. It is clear to see that the primary value of community and voluntary organisations provide a real social value to the people they serve. Linking the Generations seminar MAYo North East Leader Partnership collaborated with a number of organisations to organise the recent 2018 Social Inclusion Awareness seminar 'Linking Generations' held in GMIT, Castlebar. The aim of this awareness week was to promote 'access for all' within our community.Social Inclusion and Community Development Working Group of the Mayo LCDC in conjunction with GMIT held a seminar and

workshop recently. The key note speaker Nell McCafferty amongst other social and community activists discussed the important subject Linking the Generations – Building a Socially Inclusive county. Contributors also discussed the experiences of older and younger people from different perspectives and how the generations can work together today to overcome isolation, exclusion and marginalisation.

In addition to discussing these themes, a number of innovative workshops took place aimed at celebrating diversity and creating opportunities for shared learning across the generations. All the activities involved were simple for participants to do, and were enjoyed by all, proving that no matter what age the others on your team are, you all can work together towards a common goal of mutual understanding and inclusion.’

Ballina to find its Other Voices BALLINA will welcome one of the world’s most prestigious and critically acclaimed music festivals this September when it hosts a leg of other Voices. The festival which started off in Dingle 15 years ago has grown to become one of the most prestigious music events in the global calendar with the likes of Ed Sheeran, Willie Nelson, Ray Davies, Hozier, Elbow, Glen Hansard, Ryan Adams, Florance and the Machine and Mumford and Sons all performing at it in the past. The festival, which has been a popular television hit, is broadcast by RTE in Ireland and in a number of countries around the world on TV and through live streaming. Anne McCarthy, Arts officer for Mayo County Council outlined the plans for the festival in Ballina, which have been in the workings for the past year, to the members of the Ballina Municipal District at their March meeting.

St Michael’s Church in Ballina proposed as the main hub for performances.

She told the members that the festival is to take place over the weekend of Friday, September 28 and Saturday, September 29, where a number of world class artists will come to Ballina, with performances taking place all over the town. The main hub for performances, like in Dingle,

will be in a church, with St Michael’s Church in Ardnaree the selected venue, other performances will take place in pubs and venues around the town. Also taking place as part of the festival will be the Ireland’s Edge conference in the Ballina Arts Center on the Saturday. Anne McCarthy informed

Mayo North East are one of the partner organisations involved in implementing the National Pollinator Plan. one third of our bee species are threatened with extinction from Ireland. We know it’s because we have drastically reduced the areas where they can nest and the amount of food (flowers) our landscape provides for them. We can stand back and watch the problem happen, or we can try to do something. The All-Ireland Pollinator Plan is about all of us, from farmers to local authorities, to schools, gardeners and businesses, coming together to try to create an Ireland where pollinators can survive and thrive. The plan provides an important framework to bring together pollinator initiatives from the North and South, and is the start of a process by which we can collectively take positive steps to protect our pollinators and the service they provide into the future. It is a shared plan of action. over the next five years this Plan aims to build a foundation to bring about a landscape where pollinators can flourish.
