Some small changes completely transform the layout of the space with diamond-shaped planting creating a focal attraction point in the kitchen garden. This layout slows the movement of people through the area to allow them to meander slowly to absorb the kitchen garden. The visible wildlife area brings a new concept to a traditional kitchen garden using nature itself to combat insect ‘pests’ found on the fruit and vegetables.

CUTTING FLOWERS U T T I N G F L O W E R S
*This image supports the planting plan and doesn't consider the seasonality of planting
Inclusivity, created through the ‘Wild’ meadow feel to the islands, make people feel at ease to pick flowers using the meandering paths through the planting. The invitation to picking the flowers is on clear signage and donations table where recycled glass jars found secured in a box for people to use when they wish (the presence of volunteers is not required). The reasoning behind having the cutting flower area transitioning the wellbeing and kitchen garden area is not just because of the benefit of attracting bees but also the climate and welfare benefits of hand-cutting flowers locally rather than buying from the shops with the notion of picking flowers, distracting the mind from issues and worries. Colour Scheme Colour through these islands is vibrant with no specific colour scheme allowed to ensure to re-enforce the ‘wild’ look but with purples and oranges still being a focus to ensure the island work harmoniously merging the kitchen garden and wellbeing area. Wheelchair access Wheelchair access is available up to the island allowing inclusivity for all to be able to pick the flowers from the site, with meandering paths through the flower islands being the only part that cannot be accessed. Development The public did not use the old flower cutting area (just the volunteers) this opportunity missed getting the visitors involved in the garden in a short space of time. The flower cutting area is promoting that the national trust (with Longshaw as a focus) is trying to reduce their impact on the planet in new innovating ways; Vistors are cutting flowers for free when visiting rather than buying pre-cut flowers (waste) flown in using Airmiles (harmful gases).

S ENSORY Touch & Sound E N S O R Y T o u c h & S o u n d *This image supports the planting plan and doesn't consider the seasonality of planting
The reasoning behind the sensory garden having touch and sound is to relax the mind from the stresses with the visitors becoming entranced by the planting around them. By having plants that you want to touch and are fascinated by it helps the mind rest and recover. It is essential that this space does not become overwhelmed with planting as this can cause stress on the mind. Sound is essential seeing that people recover from stress when listening to natural sounds much quicker, with rustling planting and flowing water being the key focus. Colour Scheme The colour scheme is dark/ mid greens with purples as these colours create a sense of space in a small area. Wheelchair access Wheelchair access is available up to the island, allowing inclusivity for all providing a seating area for wheelchair users to be able to enjoy the views.

SENSORY Scented & Edible E N S O R Y S c e n t e d & E d i b l e
S E N S O R Y
The reasoning behind having a scented and edible sensory garden as apart of the entrance point to the wellbeing area is to calm and relax the mind while connecting the kitchen gardens herb area following the scented area. Having a scented and edible wellbeing area connects people directly to nature and the environment, with the fragrance having a significant positive effect on emotions and can also be hugely nostalgic. Colour Scheme Red, pinks and purples by planting adjoining colours it creates a harmonious combination as well as the pink and red adding warmth. It combines the purples found in the other scented area with the bold reds. Wheelchair access Wheelchair access is available to view this area but does not provide any seating.

The reasoning behind placing these areas in the middle of the kitchen garden is to provide a clear path of direction to take by giving a clear attraction point in the centre through the use of the bright colour contrasting the mainly green vegetable planting. The benefits of these areas for the kitchen garden is immense as it detracts the bugs from the fruit and vegetables. Colour Scheme Oranges and yellows are providing a bold planting scheme in the centre of the kitchen garden, attracting bugs through the colours and personal preference of the pests but also of other species such as butterflies. Wheelchair access Wheelchair access is not possible to the main area of planting, but there is a strip of this planting that is accessible for wheelchair users to see. Development Some of these plants are present in the site currently, but they are in small volumes placed in the vegetables which are still possible to do in the redesign but having these separate areas is a new concept for the kitchen garden.

HERB AREA E R B A R E A
H E R B Using herbs that are currently at the kitchen garden, increasing volume through cuttings. Doing this will reduce the cost and improve the sustainability of creating the herb area as only a few plants will need to be bought. This area is significant in joining the well-being and Kitchen garden area by using the sense of smell and Kitchen use at the universal object. Colour Scheme Using mainly greens with slight variation in the colours during different seasons to provide a harmonious transition from the flower cutting area. Wheelchair access Wheelchair access is possible and can touch and feel the areas throughout the design. Development This is something that is present in the kitchen garden but is not displayed to its full potential in terms of the visitors being aware that there is a herb garden.

The paths allow access for all in the entire well-being area and parts of the Kitchen-garden. Access for all means that everyone can experience the sensory, flower picking, herb and parts of the kitchen garden along with being able to get to the sales table. In the potting area, new wheelchair-friendly planting beds (placed along the wall) allow anyone using a wheelchair to volunteer in the Kitchen and wellbeing area if they wish along with possibly providing educational days for all. The seating area for wheelchair users is placed at the top of the wellbeing area providing the view over the kitchen garden and the peaks.
Involvement for all areas Disabled seating area Disabled access path
Smaller seating is used in the majority of the areas seeing that two people could fit on the bench, but would not provide more, this is to ensure that people do not feel intimidated or threatened by a group of people and feel that they are unable to sit them without intruding. The benches positioning also helps with social interaction amongst strangers as a result of being placed looking slightly towards each other props people to feel comfortable enough to talk to each other.

The potting area is essential for the volunteers to feel like they have space away from the visitors where they can pot and plant new plants along with a space for the storage of pot plants and cuttings. The separation is created with a stone wall from the herb area to keep the cottage look to the kitchen garden. The ground is level and has compact limestone on top to ensure that disabled access is possible. Access and involvement of all are critical, allowing everyone to get involved in planting whether as a volunteer or as future activity days in the Kitchen-garden. To facilitate, this other unique multipurpose work stations and planting beds for people using a wheelchair allows the perfect height and underneath leg room to serve for wheelchair users.

Slightly modifying the shed to add in a planting border of vegetables and flowers to show visitors that even the small spaces in the Kitchen garden can be beautiful. The space below the shed will remain as extra planting storage if needed for budding plants. The colour will be the National Trust green to tie in the garden and National Trust.

The animal area educates the visitors of the positives of having bug hotels and areas specifically in a space such as a kitchen garden which is critical to ensure that the pests are not a problem. Using nature to its strengths and encouraging preditors of the pests into the kitchen garden rather than having to use natural forms of pest control. In the form of a bug hotel wall and pond area and other natural habitats. Visitors can only view this area due to the potential risks of water and low maintenance habits created shown below.
The bug hotel wall hides the storage from the Kitchen garden area and provides a bug habitat that benefits the kitchen garden. The hexagon space provides a tidier bug hotel through the textures and shapes created.

Using chalkboards allows the traditional ‘cottage’ feel to portrayed in the signage, with four more significant signs required for, the wellbeing, kitchen garden, Sales table and kids activity board in the area. The site should be labelled with the smaller signs at each plant; allowing people to understand what the plants are creating an overall more interactive space that will enable people to explore the plants used without volunteers needing to be present.

In the kitchen garden area, winter provides little interest; introducing the wire sculptures made by the volunteers (once a class has been offered) will be placed amongst the vegetables and soil remaining in the winter months showing vegetation and animals are present in the summer. The sculptures provide interest even in the winter months when little plants are being grown and creating an all year round interactive space.
