The project involved the refurbishment of a 1960s housing tower block in Paris. The tower was 16 storeys and had 96 apartments which were all in need of being updated. Instead of the obvious option of demolishing the structure and rebuilding. Lacaton and Vassal proposed they extend the apartments floor plates outwards. This was achieved by constructing a new steel structure around the outside of the building and new prefabricated floor plates were attached to the new structure and the existing facade was opened up to create new openings. All of the apartments got a new balcony and winter garden to drastically improve the natural lighting into the apartment, it also improved the insulation values for the building. This floor plate expansion enabled some apartments to have an additional bedroom, and larger kitchen/ living spaces. A new lift shaft was added to improve the circulation around the tower. A new structure to the outside of the tower block proves to be a successful solution for retrofit and extension to a tower block. It would be interesting if the prefabricated module could easily be changed and updated, according to a users needs and requirements, this would allow an interesting metamorphosis to take place in the tower over a period of time.
