The project was split into a masterplanning phase and a residential. Firstly, within a team of 5, we were asked to design a masterplan for a new sea view housing development in Margate with dwellings ranging between 1- 5 bedrooms, amenities and social spaces. Creating a strong frame around the site was the team’s starting point while continuing the existing street context. This was able to provide the frame work for residential court yards, and a commercial sea front plaza. Live/ work and commerical units framed views and routes towards the sea inviting people down to the sea into the new development. Individually we then designed an apartment building within the proposed masterplan following the themes of modular design and/or construction.

My chosen building block framed the new public route down to the promenade and community square. I decided the dwellings were to be all live/work artist studios to coincide with the developing Creative Quarter in Margate town centre. All of the dwellings would need to have the flexibility to turn into either a living, working or commercial space. I wanted to create an environment for dwellers to collaborate and influence one another and to inspire visitors. As an artist works in a variety of mediums, providing a modular design to suit all, was very difficult. Therefore, I made the dwellings open plan apart from a fixed bathroom and kitchen pod. Sliding and fold out walls divided up the spaces into living and working areas giving the dweller flexibility as to how much space they want dedicated to living and to working. This design provided long term living options for the dweller as they would be able to make short or long term adaptions to their dwellings.

The scheme was to design a new Hip Hop Cultural Centre that was to rejuvenate a run down industrial suburb of Lille by offering dance classes, recording studios, graffiti spaces and a large flexible auditorium. I was influenced by Hip Hop’s ethos of collaborating and collaging existing art mediums to create a new product. For example the layering of different song samples to produce a new and distinctive art form. Due to Lille’s multi-cultural population I wanted to encourage collaboration between the different cultures with the outlook of creating a vibrant and inspiring area, which would attract people from the city to the suburb.

Hip Hop Centre Lille <Public Square being used for outdoor performance

My proposal had the dance, music, art and auditorium areas all as individual buildings. The large spaces in between was where it provided opportunity for collaboration, due to these areas being open to the public and being ideal places for rehearsals, performances and meeting points. The size of the spaces provides options for a variety of functions or for adaption to the centre as it develops over the years. The form and materials of the building are a collage of features from the old industrial buildings and the new developments in the surrounding area. The play on form creates a striking catayltic building for Lille.

The project is a 2 phase construction process. First phase is for a new classroom and food technology building. The second is a curved extension to the school’s main entrance and re-landscaping the routes between the main classroom buildings. I joined the project just as phase 1 was starting on site. I have been more involved with the design and construction drawings for the second phase. My main responsibility was the development of the landscape design for the school. Before the works, it was unsure as to where the main entrance to the school was. The curved glulam and glass facade extension helped highlight the heart of the school. The design of the landscape was to complement the features of the new entrance.

I decided that the landscape was to consist of a series of circles to relate to the form of the new entrance. The circles symbolised where the main hubs of activity were to take place, in between the circles are axial paths which provide views and routes towards different areas of the school. All of the routes had to be wheel chair accessible. I have been involved with providing different design options for the client as well as making suggestions for paving materials, lighting and street furniture. I have also been working for the client to produce a design for a new canopy over the route towards the school’s dining hall. Due to the schools Edwardian Architecture producing a design which was sympathetic to it’s traditional surroundings was key.

Kitchen schedule drawing for manufacturers

I was responsible for providing options and advice on the finishes for the classroom and food technology building at first phase. I have provided sample boards and written specifications for the client to comment upon. It was key for me to communicate between the client, contractor and manufacturers to ensure the specified material was suitable for a school environment and had to make sure decisions were made in plenty of time for materials to be ordered to site.

Sample board for client

This housing project was for a small extension with internal alterations. The client had a generous budget for the finishes of the project. I was given the responsibility of providing options for different kitchen layouts and materials. I presented options to the client by creating a number of 3D images on Sketch Up I was responsible for introducing to the practice the online creative sharing website, Pinterest. I used this to produce online mood boards for the client which helped support my ideas in a strong visual sense. With it being done over the internet it helped the development of the project move along a lot quicker, as the client wanted it finished as quickly as possible.
