WEDDING FLOWERS

Perhaps the traditional bridal bouquet isn’t for you. After all, you’re not the “traditional” bride. You are a beautiful and unique creature, and you won’t be satisfied with a run-of-the-mill wedding. Maybe you’re drawn to the exotic. You might prefer a combination of flowers in blue and purple jewel tones with a few peacock feathers tucked in here and there for a dramatic effect. Or, maybe you’re a country girl. You might appreciate a woodsythemed bouquet, complete with pine cone “flowers,” twigs and burlap ribbon. Or, you might be a girl who enjoys all things sparkling and glittering. So, your preferences might lean toward a sleek, chic bouquet designed with an assortment of colorful, vintage pieces of jewelry. No matter your taste, you have something in common with most every other bride: you want your wedding details to make a statement about who you are – and, what is important to you. One of the most visible ways to make this statement is to be inventive with your wedding flower bouquets and decorative arrangements. Sandy Adams, owner of The Backway to Wren Floral & Gift Shop, says when she meets with a bride, her first duty is trying to “get a take on her desires, colors and whether she wants fresh or silk florals.” With the growing popularity of websites like Pinterest, this task is sometimes the easiest part of the job. It doesn’t take much searching online to locate photos of outof-the-ordinary wedding designs. In addition to flower ideas

to match a favorite color scheme or to highlight a personal interest, images online also include arrangements to fit the season or the location of the wedding. “I’ve had brides visit my shop to inquire about wedding flowers, and they have an inspirational picture with them – flower designs they simply love – and they want me to replicate the image,” says Sandy. Even in these cases, she likes to add a “slight, but different touch” to make the design unique to the bride. In other instances, brides don’t know what they want. While she tries to make suggestions to help a bride decide, Sandy admits, “It’s even more fun when she tells me, ‘Hey, you’re the expert – do whatever you think is best.’” Sandy is enthusiastic about using a variety of colors. “Nature’s wildflowers all seem to blend with one another,” she points out, “so I don’t see why different colors of flowers cannot be combined into a beautiful bouquet.” Flowers in shades of white or cream shades can help “marry all the colors together.” Some the most unusual wedding arrangements are those with the least color. “I am waiting for the day when someone challenges me to do an all-white flower wedding, using different types of flowers and textures,” says Sandy. “It’s something I’ve always desired to do.” Location may provide inspiration for your own unique wedding flowers. For one country wedding, Sandy says the bride used partially hollowed-out logs to serve as rustic flower vases. She adds, “Shepherd hooks with large, green foliage plants make for an interesting aisle entry, along with bales of straw and tealight candles inside Mason jars.” For an outdoor reception under a white tent, add visual interest with garlands of flowers, beads and ribbons. Hang these from above for colorful texture and gobs of romance. Sandy also suggests bringing an outdoor setting indoors. Her daughter once needed a wintery theme for a children’s center, so she painted bare tree limbs white and decorated them with strands of white lights – perfect idea for a winter wedding! If you love the beach, use seashells in your bouquet and other arrangements. Bring an old-fashioned garden indoors with hand-tied bouquets and arrangements of lavender, hyacinths or lilac. Use old watering cans or gardening boots for one-ofa-kind vases. Whatever you choose, don’t forget that wedding flowers aren’t limited to bouquets and table arrangements. Your floral designs can extend to hairstyles (floral wreaths, or sprays tucked into an up-do), decorative structures (arbors, trellises, etc.), guest favors, and even the wedding cake! decorate rustic wedding romance: DÉCOR ON A DIME article sponsored by
Yellow Creek Photography see their listing on page 28.
Fortunately for today’s bride, romantic wedding décor is possible without an enormous financial investment. Websites like Pinterest offer a wealth of DYI (do-it-yourself) ideas for the bride who wants maximum romance at minimum cost. But, you might not realize there are decorating experts available nearby, as well. Small-town shop owners, like Jackie Caffee of Willshire, Ohio and Vickie Schulte of Van Wert, have lots of ideas for wedding décor. And, they are always on the lookout for items well-suited to the occasion! In fact, Jackie says she tries to find “architectural salvage pieces” specifically for weddings. Many brides-to-be visit her antiques and primitives shop, Blackcreek Peddler, in hopes of creating a country, outdoorsy, romantic look with aged or distressed pieces. She has many suggestions for wedding décor. “Old doors can be used as a back drop for photos or behind a reception table, or they can be made into an archway for the bride and groom to exchange vows under. Just add a wedding wreath or swag for a finished look. “Old windows can be used as information boards – display an engagement date, names of the bride and groom, or even entree or dessert options at the reception! They also make excellent photo frames for more than one picture.” Jackie also suggests hanging flowers, wreaths, toile, or burlap fabric from an old porch post for a “primitive country look.” Or, fill an antique wagon, cart or wheelbarrow with other antiques, such as crates, crocks and jars, to hold floral arrangements. She adds, “Old crates can be made into almost anything and gives that rustic look. “Old blue Mason jars are a favorite to use as centerpieces for cut flowers. I’ve seen these hung from wire hangers and put on freestanding shepherd’s hooks to line an outdoor wedding aisle.”

One big money-saving tip: “Visit grandparents, aunts and uncles – any relatives–for old primitive items to use,” recommends Jackie. “Search their old buildings and barns for items. This will also be sentimental to include in your wedding photos.” Jackie also advises bringing the couple’s personalities into the décor. One bride came into her shop looking for dairy-related antiques because the groom worked at a dairy. Another bride filled empty shotgun shells with greenery and small flowers to create boutonnieres for the men – her groom was an avid hunter. “Personal touches that complement the couple...I think that is very romantic!” Jackie says. Vickie’s shop, Once I Was, carries a “very eclectic mixture of treasured finds,” she says. “We always have a wide selection of vintage furniture, tables, chairs, fence sections, ornate frames, end tables, old glass items, dishes, vintage suitcases and trunks. “I have decorated many receptions using the vintage glass and frames from the shop. Many times, they are ‘repurposed’ a bit to take on the bride’s look. The furniture we have has also been worked into warm, inviting vignettes, perfect for picture-taking both at the ceremony and during the reception. “We offer all of these things at a reasonable rental rate to make a one-of-a-kind wedding affordable for anyone.” According to Vickie, brides these days are very creative. “They have a theme in mind when they come in, and then we start working towards the color, coordinating colors and all other aspects of design. I will hunt til I find what they need.” She says brides have sent her on “treasure hunts” that are “mind-boggling, yet wonderful to be part of.” Other ideas for brides? “A fabulously decorated trunk or suitcase makes a one-of-a-kind card holder for all the wonderful money cards,” Vickie suggests. “I have also used train cases for the same purpose. “Centerpieces are usually the product of treasure hunting finds– frames, jars, bottles, feathers, vintage hankies, and fabrics, just to name a few.” She offers these items for rent, as well. “My specialty is repurposed jewelry. I carry a lot of vintage pieces and often make the bride and her attendants some very unique pieces for the day.” Vickie also creates “flowers” from vintage fabrics, burlap, buttons and baubles. She advises brides to “think outside of the box.” She explains, “Be willing to use your imagination, or someone else’s, to achieve the look you want. If you love it, want it, and are willing to work for it, it can be done. “Saving the money is the tricky part. But, it doesn’t have to cost a million bucks to look amazing.” Many thanks to Jackie Caffee of Blackcreek Peddler in Willshire, Ohio and Vickie Schulte of Once I Was in Van Wert, Ohio for assistance with this article!

appetizers or 3-course meal: DINING OPTIONS article sponsored by
Adams County Financial Services see their listing on page 30.
Now that you’ve set the date and booked your wedding venue, it’s time to plan the reception. What should the caterer serve your guests? Do you plan a light menu of appetizers or desserts, or will your guests expect an elegant, three-course dinner? Traditionally, the type of menu has most often been determined by the time of day when the reception is held. Karen Romer of Romer’s Catering & Entertainment Facilities explains, “If the reception time is appropriate timing for lunch, we would suggest an hors d’oeurve menu or something on the lighter side. If the schedule is for late afternoon or evening, a dinner buffet or served dinner menu would be appropriate.” Romer’s least complicated menu for a wedding reception would involve hors d’ouerves, as mentioned, or a simple buffet dinner featuring fried chicken and mashed potatoes. “The more exclusive menus,” Karen adds, “would be food stations with meat carving, potatoes served in glass stemware, or perhaps a plate dinner served by waitstaff.” According to Kip Pancake of Krave-it Catering & Event Planning, your wedding theme should play a factor in the menu choices, as well. “Today, wedding themes are carried from the savethe-date through the reception,” he says. “The theme actually creates a mindset for the guests. So, the food choices should be in sync with the theme.” Krave-it’s most elaborate wedding reception–and, possibly, the most interesting–included an all-appetizer menu. “We delivered these to the guests at the table or where they were standing. The menu featured twelve appetizers to suit all tastes, including Italian, Mexican and a spin on comfort foods.” Guests at this particular reception were offered mini lasagna rolls, mini fajitas, Mexican parfaits, cheese toasties and tomato

13
bisque, as well as Krave-it’s Prime Martini – mashed potatoes and gravy layered in a martini glass, topped with steak. Reception location may or may not affect your menu choices. Kip says, “The venue creates a certain set of expectations for the guest. We have done wedding receptions in very nice facilities. We have also done them in someone’s garage. “Each event had a unique food theme. It does not matter what the food selection, so long as the quality and presentation are above par.” However, Karen warns, if the reception is held outdoors or in another location lacking climate control, “all the rules change.” She clarifies, “The food served has to withstand the elements of weather. “For instance, the salad cannot be one that wilts easily. Chocolatecovered strawberries could become a melting disaster. And, a carving station would be very hard to keep warm with any kind of outdoor air. Pick and choose your menu items carefully.” Of course, probably the most significant factor in selecting your reception menu items is your budget. As Kip points out, a majority of young brides deal with a tight budget. To stay within budget, he recommends a simple reception menu with two meat choices and two sides – perhaps chicken breast, pork loin, cheesy potatoes, green beans and side salad. “This gives the guests some options,” he explains. “For instance, the salad would cover the guest who prefers not to eat meat or is dieting.” The two biggest factors in reception cost, Karen says, are the menu choices and the food service required. “Choosing fried chicken instead of carving prime rib can make a difference of at least tendollars per plate. Satisfy your guests with cheese and vegetable trays instead of stuffed mushrooms and mini cheesecakes. “If all the guests used a buffet line and appropriate paper plates, rather than china, the savings would be huge. Offer non-alcoholic beverages, but have a cash bar for anything else guests need. The tight budget wedding receptions can be just as wonderful as the exclusive ones.” Other reception costs to consider, she adds, include venue rental, extra set-up or clean-up fees, transportation costs, bar and bartender, entertainment, decorations, wedding cake, taxes and gratuity. “Don’t forget about the cake table,” says Kip. “Almost everyone gets the cake but forgets about the plates, serving utensils, plates and forks.” He also suggests including lunch for the bridal party on the day of the wedding. “These costs add up quickly when you have a large guest list. But, it is your event...it should be your menu. You are limited by two things: your imagination and your budget.” Many thanks to Karen Romer of Romer’s Catering & Entertainment Facilities and Kip Pancake of Krave-it Catering & Event Planning for assistance with this article!

the dress
bridal gown consultation: WHAT TO EXPECT
If you spend your Friday nights watching other brides-to-be “Say Yes to the Dress,” you might wonder how these entertaining shows actually compare with the real-life experience. What can you expect when you show up for your bridal gown appointment? “Shopping for a bridal gown is a very important event,” says Becca Wenning of Brides & Beyond in St. Henry, Ohio. “It’s a day you want to share. “Bring along the people whose opinions you value and those who will help confirm your decision when you find the gown of your dreams.” Once you’ve decided who will come with you, what else should you bring to the appointment? Becca assures, “There is no need to stress about bringing anything. We provide everything a bride would need - though she might like to bring photos of any dresses she’s seen and loved. We want to make sure she has the most relaxed, fun, memorable and exciting experience.” Each bridal shop has its own customs and policies, however, so you should ask when you make the appointment what the staff will expect of you. For instance, says Debbie Maddler of Rose Gate Bridal in Winchester, Indiana, “Wear a strapless bra if you have one - or, the appropriate undergarments for your look.” Debbie also recommends, “Freshly shower, as you will be trying on several selections and will be working closely with the consultant. “And, bring enough money for a deposit on a dress in your price range. The average dress this year is approximately $1,400 dollars. Most shops will require half down to place an order.” During your appointment, Becca says the bridal shop staff should be considered your “style experts.” She explains, “By asking probing questions about the style and vision of the
Bridal Designs 2015 Edition
17
wedding, the consultant can connect with the bride and personally select styles for her to try on. “We usually start with about six to eight gowns in the room. Once the consultant can see what the bride is liking, they will continue to select gowns for her to try on until she narrows it down to one. “It’s actually very common for a bride to fall in love with the first gown she tries on – but, who doesn’t love playing dressup and trying on a few more? We actually recommend it. Then, there’s no second-guessing the feeling you have that you’ve found “your” dress.” Both Becca and Debbie agree that brides typically decide on a gown at the first appointment. “Putting off the dress decision for another day usually means the bride did not bring the important people with her for the appointment, the price of the chosen gown is too far off her budget, or the bride just loves the whole excitement of the “hunt!” Debbie says. Evidently, a growing number of brides love playing “dress-up” so much that some shops have begun to charge for these appointments. “We typically try to spend one to two hours with a bridal group,” adds Debbie. This can present a problem for the shop when a bride stretches her experience to two or three appointments. What happens when a bride thinks she’s found the gown of her dreams, but the support team she’s brought with her doesn’t agree? “This is one of the most difficult scenarios in an appointment,” Becca says. “In the end, if your loved ones know how you feel about the gown, they will love seeing you happy in it, regardless of their preferences.” Debbie suggests, “If the people with you don’t like the dress you’ve chosen, it means either you have brought the wrong people with you, or they don’t share your vision of the wedding.” Denise Brower, owner of Bridal Exchange–a Fort Wayne shop specializing in consigned new and previously-owned gowns –says simply, “A bride needs to like the dress and trust the people she brought.” Whatever you encounter at your gown appointment, the shop owners agree: the gown selection process should be a pleasant one. Becca advises, “Just remember to enjoy every moment, and have a great time shopping. “We will go that extra mile until you know, deep down, that you have found your gown!” Denise adds, playfully, “It’s your day, your way!” Many thanks to: Becca Wenning of Brides & Beyond in St. Henry, Ohio; Debbie Madler of Rose Gate Bridal in Winchester, Indiana; and, Denise Brower of Bridal Exchange in Fort Wayne, Indiana for assistance with this article!

must-capture moments: FROM THE PROS
You’ll spend countless hours planning and preparing for the biggest day of your life (so far). Of utmost importance is selecting a photographer who understands how much this day means to you – someone who will capture the special moments for you to treasure for as “long as you both shall live.” Local photographers agree: the most important moments to capture on your special day are those moments most filled with emotion. Jeremi Schortgen of Yellow Creek Photography lists a few examples. “Mom’s look of adoration as she helps dress her daughter...the look in Dad’s eyes right before he walks his daughter down the aisle...special moments with the family.” Amy Sprunger of Amy’s Photography says she gives brides a photo check-off list during the consultation. “But, often,” she adds, “the photos of the wedding day unfolding end up being so very important later on. The joy, love and candid moments between relatives who haven’t been together in awhile are very special to catch.” She recalls photographing one bride with her grandfather. “He was grinning from ear to ear as he saw his granddaughter. Just a few weeks later, the grandfather passed away. That joyful expression between the two of them was one of the bride’s favorite photos.” Pam Agler of Moments by Pam Photography agrees that emotion tops the list of must-capture moments. “I had a wedding last fall where the groom just couldn’t contain his tears. He was so incredibly sweet – my heart just melted watching it all unfold behind the lens.” But, Pam says, brides shouldn’t simply expect to see these sorts of photos from their wedding day. “About the only way a bride can be sure her photographer doesn’t miss these opportunities is to look through the photographer’s portfolio and see if he or she is already capturing them for others,” she explains. “Then, you’ll need to express your desire for more than just formal shots at the wedding – for there to be many photos taken

all day long, of not just the events, but the feelings behind the events.” While candid moments “do happen,” Jeremi says, “The best way to capture lasting memories is to have planned times set up with your photographer throughout the day. Plan a time when Mom will help put on the dress. Plan a time for Dad to help the groom with his tie. Do a ‘first look’ with your dad or mom or grandma or another special person in your life.” More importantly, Jeremi suggests, “Do a ‘first look’ with your groom. It is extremely difficult to capture the look on the groom’s face as you walk into the church. Unless there is a balcony, it is, at times, impossible.” Also, she recommends capturing any moment that makes the wedding more memorable. “Maybe the ring bearer sprinting down the aisle, or the ushers messing up the aisle runner, or the moms having a private moment together in tears.” Special circumstances may also influence your desire for capturing certain moments. One couple told Jeremi that the groom’s father had been diagnosed with cancer that was “very progressed.” Jeremi recalls, “We kept one camera on him all day. “One special moment was when one of his daughters was dancing with him. She had tears streaming down her face as he held her. I think about that moment often, hoping that the photo is a great comfort to her.” Of course, wedding day tears may be tears of unexpected joy, as well. Amy remembers a special wedding she photographed in 2011. “It was a wedding day that no one was sure would happen. “The bride was diagnosed with medulloblastola in 2010. She underwent radiation and chemotherapy for one year and miraculously survived. “The groom had walked through the entire illness with her. Their wedding day was truly a celebration of their love and commitment, but more significantly, it was a celebration of life. “There were many tears of joy shed that day. Everyone there was happy for the couple – especially that the two had made it to this day.” In addition to hiring a “seasoned professional,” Amy has one other piece of advice. Make sure everyone knows what time they’ll need to be present for their part in the photography sessions. “Having subjects arrive on time is vital for a complete wedding photography portfolio,” Amy says. Many thanks to: Amy Sprunger of Amy’s Photography, Berne, Indiana; Jeremi Schortgen of Yellow Creek Photography, Monroe, Indiana; and, Pam Agler of Moments by Pam Photography of Monroe, Indiana for assistance with this article!
