BERNE A CHARMING SWISS COMMUNITY
Many Thanks to This Corporate Sponsor!
See their Listing in the Manufacturing/Industry section.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW... The heart of Berne, Indiana, lies at the crossroads of two busy highways – U.S. 27, which spans the nation from northern Michigan to southern Florida – and State Road 218. The city is conveniently located just 35 miles south of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and the drive to Indianapolis is under two hours. A close-knit community with strong ties to its heritage, Berne was settled in the mid-1850s by a group of Mennonite families from Switzerland, along with a few pioneers who had migrated from eastern states. The city was officially established in 1872. Berne remains a deeply religious community. The city is home to no fewer than 17 churches and features the largest Mennonite sanctuary in North America. Rural areas immediately surrounding the city are home to a large percentage of the county’s Old Order Amish population. South Adams Schools recently relocated its elementary and middle school facilities to a single campus with the high school, situated on the south side of Berne. South Adams High School received a silver medal in the 2014 U.S. News Best High Schools Ranking and was listed at #30 among the Best High Schools in Indiana. Known as “the furniture capital of Indiana,” Berne’s retail offerings feature five furniture stores, and some of these furniture lines are manufactured locally. Other local manufacturing consists of automotive parts, automated assembly equipment, off-set printing, die tooling, heating stoves and more. Local attractions include the largest outdoor museum in northern Indiana and a clock tower similar to the structure located in Bern, Switzerland, as well as many Amish-owned businesses within and outside of the city limits. The annual Swiss Days Festival is held the last weekend in July, while the Weinachtsfest marks the start of the Christmas season. Come see why Bloomberg Businessweek.com named Berne Indiana’s 2011 runner-up in its Best Places to Raise Children study!

A STELLAR COMMUNITIES FINALIST
DECATUR
Many Thanks to This Corporate Sponsor!
See their Listing in the Healthcare/Medical section.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW... Named for the U.S. naval hero, Stephen Decatur, the City of Decatur, Indiana, was founded in 1836 by Samuel L. Rugg. A marble monument sits on the Chamber of Commerce lawn to commemorate Rugg, the man who “spent hundreds of dollars of his money, causing great personal financial difficulty” to bring a road through the city to connect St. Marys, Ohio, to Fort Wayne, Indiana. With an area of nearly five square miles, Decatur’s population is just over 9,400. The city is home to the county’s only hospital, established more than 90 years ago. Today, the network includes a continuing care retirement community, an assisted living facility, and a cooperative of local and visiting physicians and specialists from Fort Wayne. Industry in Decatur ranges from food production and packaging to manufacturing of recreational vehicles, including RVs, motorhomes and powerboats. Decatur attractions include Elephant Rock (a memorial to Indiana author Gene Stratton-Porter), Decatur Greenway, Adams County Historical Museum, and the Decatur Sculpture Walk. Established in 2012, the Sculpture Walk features a yearround outdoor/indoor art exhibit with up to 16 sculptures situated in downtown Decatur. Sculptures are on loan to the public and may be purchased from the artists. The Kekionga Festival, held in August, takes place on the banks of the St. Marys River in Decatur. The annual event features a pioneer encampment and living history village, along with an old-fashioned praise and worship church service, the popular Taste of Decatur restaurant sampler, and downtown sidewalk sales. The Decatur Chamber of Commerce also hosts the Motor Sports Festival in June and a Callithumpian Festival in October, featuring the largest Halloween parade in the Midwest. The City of Decatur was one of six Indiana communities selected as finalists for the 2014 Stellar Communities Program grants. It’s a great place to live, work and raise a family!

GENEVA THE FIRST “BIRD TOWN” OF INDIANA
Many Thanks to This Corporate Sponsor! See their Listing in the Notfor-Profit section.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW... Geneva proudly became the first town in the state to receive the Bird Town designation by the Indiana Audobon Society in 2013. This honor recognizes the town’s commitment to the protection and conservation of bird populations and their habitats. The Town of Geneva was established in 1874. When a fire destroyed much of the town in 1895, wooden buildings were banned, and local authorities mandated the construction of stone, iron or brick buildings along downtown Line Street. The downtown area was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. Once home to author, naturalist, and wildlife photographer Gene Stratton-Porter, Geneva attractions include her former log cabin home, as well as a classroom and exhibits devoted to nature education. Surrounding wetlands have been restored in recent years, and these include a 106-acre bird sanctuary and the 112-acre Wabash River Rainbow Bend Park. Other local attractions include a golf course and the only remaining covered bridge that once spanned the nearby Wabash River. Today, Geneva has a small industrial base, including a large tomatoprocessing facility, as well as manufacturers of copper fitting products and casket hardware. The community’s population is nearing 1,300, and many of the county’s Old Order Amish population live near Geneva. The town’s youth attend South Adams Schools.

MONROE ORIGINAL SEAT OF ADAMS COUNTY
Many Thanks to This Corporate Sponsor! See their Listing in the Industry section.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW... Nestled in the center of Adams County lies the town of Monroe, home to nearly 850 residents. Monroe was platted in 1849 and served as the county seat until widespread flooding necessitated a change. Although it became a stop on the railroad that connected Fort Wayne to Richmond, the town was not incorporated until 1906. By that time, what is now “downtown” was in place, as were many homes – several constructed from the tile block that was being manufactured in the southwest portion of the town. Monroe has more than doubled in size since its selection in 1949 for the location of Adams Central School, one of the first school consolidations in the State of Indiana. Today, Adams Central is annually ranked as one of the top ten academic schools in Indiana and regularly enjoys athletic successes, including state championships in football, baseball, and wrestling, as well as a number of academic competitions. Local industries include semi-trailer and specialty wood products manufacturing. Monroe is also home to the largest independent tire dealer in the U.S., as well as an auction house that creates a wholesale marketplace for area produce and flower growers. Most of these growers are Old Order Amish, and sales are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from April thorugh October. The Adams County 4-H Fairgrounds are located in Monroe. The Monroe Youth League offers teeball, baseball and softball programs at Don Ray Memorial Park. The park features four ball diamonds, two practice diamonds, three batting cages and a concessions stand.

THE ONLY JAY IN THE USA
PORTLAND
www.LandscapesTravel.com
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW... County seat of “the only Jay in the USA,” Portland might be a small, rural community in Northeast Indiana, but the city of 6,800 has a lot to offer! Jay County was named for John Jay, the first chief justice of the United States Supreme Court. Portland serves as the county seat, and the magnificent county courthouse was completed in 1919. The local economy relies on both agriculture and industry. Portland’s workforce benefits from local educational programs, and the city’s businesses often attract employees from nearby counties. The John Jay Center for Learning, located downtown, is “dedicated to helping people achieve...lifelong employability through education.” Arts Place, located downtown, presents a series of performing arts events, as well as visual art exhibits, throughout the year. The organization also offers a variety of arts classes for children and adults. The Jay County Fairgrounds, located on the east side of the city, hosts a variety of annual events, including the world’s largest antique gas engine & tractor show and the nation’s largest vintage motor bike show, that attract visitors from around the globe. Other Portland attractions include the Jay County Historical Museum, Museum of the Soldier, Jay County Antique Mall, and the Arch Bridge – the only concrete bowstring-truss bridge in Indiana. Portland’s Tri-State Club Grounds have been host to an annual gathering of Great Lakes Nations for more than a decade. The NCGLNAC holds cultural arts/crafts and educational workshops in Portland, as well. Two nature preserves have been established in rural Portland, with more than 135 acres of land and nearly three miles of walking trails between them. The Bird Sanctuary adds another 100 acres of restored wetlands. Portland’s 33-acre Hudson Family Park, located within city limits, features an amphitheater, 5-acre pond, walking/ biking trails, nature trails, and a children’s play area.

BLUFFTON PARLOR CITY...OUR DOOR IS ALWAYS OPEN
www.LandscapesTravel.com
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW... Bluffton is referred to as “The Parlor City,” a nickname earned when this city became one of the first in the state to pave its streets. Older residents still recall sitting on their front porches, or “parlors,” on warm summer evenings to visit with neighbors and greet those passing by. The seat of Wells County, Bluffton is home to a massive, Romanesque court house, possessing a 140-foot clock tower and impressive sandstone carvings. The structure serves city residents much as it did when first built in 1891. Throughout Bluffton, small businesses are growing at an unprecedented rate, playing a crucial role in community’s growth. Yet, it’s an entrepreneurial spirit, a solid work ethic and the willingness to roll up sleeves and embrace the future that provides local stability and continued growth for employers, as well as employees. Wells County is home to a wide array of industries manufacturing anything from artificial valves essential to sustain human life, to snacks found on the dedicated football fan’s tailgating menu. The agribusiness community also thrives, and new technology, from bio-fuel to wind energy to high-tech animal feeding operations, is embraced. Ouabache State Park, linked to Bluffton by a scenic, paved Rivergreenway, offers a breathtaking observation from one of the few fire towers remaining in the state. Visitors take in an eagle-eye view of Indiana’s last year-round bison exhibit, the 1,104-acre property with its modern and primitive campsites, and Kunkle Lake, which offers fishing, canoeing and other adventures. On any warm summer weekend, hundreds of visitors line the Wabash River banks at Kehoe Park to enjoy artists filling the Bluffton skies with music during the Summer Concert Series. Events held at the Arts, Commerce & Visitors Centre include at least eight gallery exhibits, fine arts opportunities for youth and adults, dances, receptions and other community activities. Bluffton is a great place to visit. Better yet, it’s a great place to call “home!”

OSSIAN A LIGHT TO THE FUTURE
Many Thanks to This Corporate Sponsor!
See their Listing in the Services section.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW... The Town of Ossian, established in 1850, was named after the legendary Scottish poet of the third century. State Highway 1 was made serviceable form Fort Wayne to Bluffton in 1843 and remains the busiest thoroughfare in Ossian today. A railroad line through Ossian was completed in 1869, and today, it is a main north-south route for the Norfolk-Southern Corporation. Ossian has spur access for shipment of rail freight. Ossian is located four miles south of Fort Wayne bypass Interstate 469. And, Fort Wayne International Airport is just seven miles north of Ossian. With such a prime location, it’s easy to see why Ossian has always been an industrial town. Ossian’s shovel-ready industrial park is home to a variety of engineering and manufacturing companies. If you’re looking for a community with that friendly, hometown-feel, Ossian’s population is just nearing 3,300. Residents still enjoy many bigger city conveniences, such as modern housing subdivisions, public parks and recreation, a library, local banks, groceries, restaurants, and more. Ossian Economic Revitalization Committee hosts several annual fundraising events, including a wine tasting in January, and Ossian’s Home Town Christmas in December. Other annual community events include town-wide garage sales in June, Freedom Fest in July, and the Fall Festival in October.
