Greetings
FROM
We’re rapidly approaching the end of 2016, and what a year it has been. My family has celebrated special occasions, we’ve cherished vacations and weekend getaways, and we’ve worked hard toward accomplishing goals at work. But, we’ve also dealt with health issues, made a couple trips to the ER, and received a few unexpected bills. I’m sure it’s the same with your family. Here at Wabash Valley Living, 2016 brought a variety of changes. Last spring, we welcomed a new advertising sales rep. A short time later, we added a freelance graphic designer, who updated our look – both in print and on the web. Then, we said farewell for now to a long-time staff member who became a dear friend. In 2016, we expanded our distribution and coverage into Huntington County in Indiana, and into Rockford, Coldwater and
Celina in Ohio. Some of you may be reading Wabash Valley Living for the very first time. We hope you’ll keep reading! We’ve seen some exciting changes in 2016. But, some things haven’t changed. It’s still the number-one goal of Wabash Valley Living to promote local businesses. We continue to feature articles on these hometown treasures – to introduce some readers to a business for the first time and to remind others of what’s available in their own backyard! We at Wabash Valley Living LOVE local businesses! We appreciate them, and we support them whenever we can. We know our readers do, too. Thank you for reading Wabash Valley Living in 2016. Like you, we look forward to what’s coming in the New Year. Blessings to you and your loved ones!

A
s a child, Kelly always loved pleasing other people. "We lived in the country outside Ossian, Indiana when I was very little," he says. "When we moved into town, I decided to introduce our family to all the neighbors. “So, I picked my mother's flowers and made bouquets to give to each family who lived around us. All was going well until one of the mothers called to thank my mother for the lovely flowers! “Mother put an end to my efforts, then. But, I think it shows that my desire to make others happy with my designs began at a very early age." Kelly's parents were friends with a florist in Ossian, and, as a young boy, Kelly was often allowed to sit in the workshop and watch the
florist at work. It didn't take long for him to identify his passion for designing and creating. Today, he is co-owner of The Secret Garden Floral & Gifts in Convoy, Ohio. Jason, The Secret Garden’s other co-owner, is a people person. "One of my former employers, a florist from Fort Wayne, always told people that I could sell ice cubes to an Eskimo," he says, laughing. "I've been in retail most of my life, and I really love helping people find whatever it is they're looking for, be it an object or a service." Several years ago, Jason and Kelly found themselves working for a florist in Fort Wayne, Indiana, who has since gone out of business. Kelly had matriculated through the Indianapolis Floral Design School and had been working for some years in various florist shops.

Jason was working the "business end" of the same florist shop, selling for the owner and taking care of the books and product ordering, especially the FTD orders. The two got along well, and before long, they began discussing the possibility of working together in their own place.
But, The Secret Garden boasts much more than just flowers. Both Kelly and Jason work at choosing inventory for the shop. When they find a company whose products they feel will work in their store, they will keep at least one of each product the company sells.
"Kelly had had a shop of his own many years before," says Jason, "and I always wanted to see him in his own shop again, doing his own designs. However, he really hates numbers! That's where I came in." After moving to Convoy in 2002, the two bided their time for about 5 years, working in different local shops. Finally, in February 2008, the week before Valentine's Day, The Secret Garden Floral and Gifts opened for business in Convoy. "We really picked a great time to open a florist's shop," Kelly remembers. "We worked like crazy that first week, getting Valentine's flowers and gifts out to customers!"

Besides floral arrangements and gifts, The Secret Garden also stocks various types of prepared pastries and fruit products. Grabill Amish Pastries delivers fresh baked goods, candies, and other sweets weekly. "We can also take special orders for pies for the holiday season," adds Jason. Other local vendors include Messmaker Baker jams and jellies, Baked Nostalgia noodles (created by Vickie Huebner), and local honey, both raw and refined. For those who like to do it themselves, New Hope Mills supplies pancake and muffin mixes of various flavors, including apple cinnamon and pumpkin spice. One look at the many thankyou cards from pleased customers confirms that The Secret Garden has made a home for itself in Convoy and 8
in Van Wert County at large. "We really work at being a part of the community, both here in Convoy, throughout the county, and in other communities close by, like Van Wert, Monroeville (Indiana), and Willshire," says Kelly. "We supply five to six churches in the area with altar flowers every Sunday. Besides that, we deliver to homes and other places throughout the county and just across the state line in Indiana, like Decatur and Monroe. “In fact, we've just been named a Premier FTD florist, an honor given by FTD based on sales and positive feedback from customers!" Checking with FTD revealed that this designation is one of the highest a florist from a rural community can receive. And, a quick check of their Facebook page reveals the overwhelmingly positive reviews they receive from a satisfied community.

“Being located in a small town lets us know people and their interests. We feel like we're able to enter each customer's life and help them express themselves through our arrangements." Giving to the community is an important part of the business. "We've held bake sales for the Children’s Miracle Network and given special floral classes for the Thomas Edison Adult Workshop," Kelly says. "We want to be a part of daily life here." With residential quarters above the shop, the entrepreneurial partners live and breathe their business. "Both of us love meeting people and making them smile when they leave the shop," Kelly says. "Christmas time is special, and we'll have several different specials for our loyal customers. Our hope is to meet more and more of our community and give as much joy to them as they give to us!"

ANTIQUES, ICE CREAM & MORE ANTIQOLOGY

istoric downtown storefronts and antiques and primitives go together like peas and carrots. Huntington, Indiana residents Adam and Rebecca Hanson operate an antique store in the city’s historic downtown. But, as the Hansons like to say, it’s “not your average antique store.” Instead, Antiqology, located in Huntington, Indiana, is “a unique blend of old and new”—plus a lot more. Adam is a native of the area, while Rebecca came to Huntington 11 years ago and decided to make it her home. The pair met at church—both were involved with the church youth group. As a married couple, Antiqology is not the first business venture for Adam and Rebecca. A few

years ago, they operated an online business together. Adam had prior experience in business management and had become accustomed to tasks relating to personnel and business finance. Rebecca, on the other hand, was more experienced in retailing and merchandising. Their experiences make the Hansons a great business team—the strengths and expertise of one compliment the other. The Hansons found they were not satisfied with the online business because it did not allow them to interact with customers face-toface. At the same time, they were having a difficult time finding the “perfect mix” of old and new for furnishing and decorating their home. Adam and Rebecca began dreaming of a different sort of business and how they could make it a reality.
DECEMBER 2016 | wabashvalleyliving.com | 11
What would later become downtown Huntington’s Antiqology started in an enclosed porch area in the Hansons’ own home. With only a small initial investment, the couple “tested the waters” by selling antiques. It was important to determine whether the community had a need for this type of business.

Fortunately, the Hansons’ athome antique shop was a huge success and began to grow quickly. But, as they discussed the possibility of expanding their business, it seemed a stretch to go from displaying items on their porch to filling an entire storefront. Adam and Rebecca considered the needs of their community again. Like many other American communities, Huntington had once been home to an oldfashioned ice cream parlor. But, that shop had been closed for some time. The Hansons realized that combining more than one business plan—based on the needs of their community— would increase their chances for success. Antiqology celebrated its grand opening in downtown Huntington in 2012. Within four months, they had again outgrown the space and began searching for a new business home. Around the same time, the Huntington County Visitor’s Bureau held a “free rent” contest—offering a free year of rent to a business willing to commit to a three-year lease on its annex building on Jefferson Street.

Contest finalists, including Adam and Rebecca, presented their business plans to the tourism board. The lease and year of free rent were awarded to Antiqology. The Hansons spent about six weeks renovating the space before opening for business there in June 2013. They later received a Huntington Alert Historic Preservation Award for the work done on the historic building. Today, Antiqology offers a wide variety of products and services, in addition to the selection of antique furnishings and décor. Adam selects and purchases merchandise for the store—aiming for just the right balance between old and new, while Rebecca assists customers and makes sure the shop runs smoothly. At their old-fashioned soda counter, the Hansons serve an award-winning hard-scooped ice cream, hand-dipped milkshakes and malts, ice cream floats, sundaes, draft root beer and sodas, and nostalgic candy. The wall behind the counter features an impressive display of gourmet craft sodas always kept in stock. In fact, Antiqology offers around 700 varieties of glass-bottled craft sodas—the largest selection in the Midwest.
Antiqology offers online ordering option for the craft sodas, and the Hansons do enough business to keep 350,000 bottles on-hand. The glass bottles, by the way, are safer for the environment and carry no risk of exposure to the harmful chemical known as BPA. Root beer is the shop’s number-one selling craft soda, followed by cola. Last year, Antiqology released a limited quantity of its own craft root beer in commemoration of Huntington’s annual Heritage Days festival. The drink was so well-received, Adam and Rebecca offered Antiqology soda again in 2016, this time two “special edition bicentennial brews” in recognition of Indiana’s 200th birthday. Adam and Rebecca also dabble in wholesale soda sales and root beer keg rentals for special events. And, they own a 1960s International Metro that serves as Antiqology’s Soda Truck, available to rent for wedding receptions, corporate parties, tastings, festivals, etc. The owners of Antiqology have played active roles within the community, including some volunteer work and charitable donations. And, Rebecca currently serves as the president of Main

Street Huntington, the city’s downtown business association. Having built a unique, successful business, Adam and Rebecca offer amazing advice for other entrepreneurs. “Buy within your budget, and add to your business as you go,” they say. “Be consistent with your hours, and be there to build it yourself— don’t rely on others to do it for you. “You are responsible for your own future. Live within your means so that you can create a debt-free life and strong financial freedom for yourself in the long run.” As busy as the Hansons are with their business and community commitments, family is still a big priority. Their daughter Maitlyn is a freshman at Huntington North High School, and their 8-year-old son Caleb is homeschooled. Maitlyn works in the store, and Caleb is a huge help behind the scenes—it won’t be long until he’s working right alongside his sister.

REVIVAL OF THE DISCARDED REMEMBERED AGAIN
S
ince June, life has been a whirlwind of activity for Tammy Steiner, owner of Remembered Again, the newest retail establishment in downtown Berne, Indiana. “I bought the building in June and opened up Swiss Days weekend,” recalls Tammy. “I worked around the clock to get it done.” For the past 14 years, this former owner of a business known as The Nut Tree had maintained a vendor booth at The Gathering House in downtown Berne while working as a photo stylist at Annie’s. In 2015, her supply of merchandise had dwindled, so she purchased various pieces of furniture at auction, stashing them in her garage as future merchandise for her booth.

But, the unexpected happened. “The Gathering House closed,” Tammy explains. Her garage was full, but her booth space was gone. Tammy remembers learning that a retail space had become available downtown. “When I found out this building was for sale, I decided if I was going to open a shop of my own, I had better do it soon.” After purchasing the building that had formerly housed a portion of Engine House Quilt Shop’s business, she submitted her two weeks’ notice at Annie’s and set out to “bring the building back to its original state.” Prior to housing several retail ventures over the years, this building had accommodated the city’s fire department before the fire station was relocated to the city building on Franklin Street.
The renovations Tammy had planned would completely change the look of the interior. “I exposed the brick—I chiseled off the plaster with an air chisel because it was really attached well.” Her efforts uncovered swaths of the original brick walls. When the dropped ceiling was removed, Tammy was delighted to discover an original tin ceiling. “I wanted it to have a more industrial look, so I left the pipes exposed and installed lights that looked more industrial.” Tammy’s family pitched in with hard work and muscle to remove carpeting and scrape glue from the cement floor. A coat of sealant was all that was needed to make the existing cement floor fit the new décor. By the time the annual Swiss Days festival took place the last weekend in July, the renovations at Remembered Again were 90% complete. The new business venture benefited from the exposure provided by the festival, even amongst the locals, many of whom weren’t yet aware of the shop’s existence.

GIRLS BOUTIQUE
Remembered Again offers a variety of furniture and home décor. “Basically, what I do,” Tammy says, “is buy items at auction. Then, I either repair and paint them, or I repurpose them. A lot of the items have been discarded or forgotten about, and now they have been revived and remembered again.

“My inventory is made up of mostly one-of-a-kind things. If you don’t buy it today, it may not be here tomorrow or ever again.” The trendy term describing this popular practice of taking something old or broken or no longer needed and turning it into something useful is “upcycling.” While some items at Remembered Again are antique, most of the items Tammy “upcycles” aren’t quite old enough to qualify.

Tammy mixes equal portions of plaster of Paris, water and latex paint to create her own chalkfinish paint. Furniture wax is then rubbed over the painted surface as a finish. Where once country and primitive were the trend, the newest popular styles are labeled with such fun terms as industrial, farmhouse (a combination of industrial, country and shabby chic), and French Cottage. Many of these design trends have been popularized by the do-ityourself shows on TV.

Tammy tackles all the repairing, painting, and designing herself, through trial and error. “I get a lot of ideas from Pinterest, and if I don’t know how to do something, I look it up on YouTube.”
She’s always enjoyed this type of crafting. “My dad was aTO COOKcreative LIKE YOU DON’T HAVE handyman-type person. As the oldest, I was the one who held the bolt or stood by to run get this or that. I observed, and I had a knack for picking up how to do this kind of thing.”
CLEAN Over the years, Tammy has kept relatives from tossing out old things, saying, “Oh don’t throw that away. I can do something with that.” From a stool to a cupboard,
to a door or a dilapidated table, both wood and metal pieces find new life and bring “oohs” and “ahhs” from customers. Remembered Again also offers a variety of accent pieces to compliment the repurposed furniture. Some of the home décor accessories are also upcycled, but many are new items. Tammy also features purses, candles, and a line of all-natural, handmade bath and body items. The rear portion of the 1,200 square-foot store contains a work room, where some of the creating takes place. A shop beside Tammy’s home houses her stockpile of wood, each piece

Fashion runs in Stephanie’s veins—her mother owns a bridal boutique in Van Wert, where the family resides. Her mother had considered opening another boutique, but after starting the process decided running two stores might be a bit much. Fortunately, Stephanie was ready to take on the challenges of business ownership, and family has been her biggest motivator. After working in the retail industry for years, Stephanie enjoyed meeting new customers and working in fashion. But, the hours were not ideal, especially over the holidays.

“Corporate hours are the worst,” she says. When her daughter was born, Stephanie was still working in “big box” stores and was required to report on holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and New Year’s Day. She missed many family events because of her job. As a wife and mother, family is Stephanie’s number-one priority—and the primary reason for opening Blossom. Now, she can set her own work hours and schedule a career around her family. Last Christmas was the first major holiday Stephanie could spend with family in some time. Located in the same building as Posh Nails on Walnut Street, Blossom of Celina is easy to

access and offers clothing and accessories for any occasion, dressy or casual. Blossom’s racks and shelves display tanks, pants, tops, skirts, jewelry, shoes, cardigans, purses, scarves and more, providing a variety of options for any fit or style. Blossom recently relocated to the current address in June. After opening the shop on Main Street in June 2015, Stephanie decided to team up with another small business in order to cut overhead costs. What started out as sharing a business space also provided an opportunity for Stephanie to do even more. As she was relocating Blossom, Stephanie earned her nail tech license so she could work for Posh Nails while still operating her boutique. She says that working for Posh “is a dream and is the best of both worlds” because of the flexibility and additional income. When determining inventory purchases, it’s all based on the customers, trends and styles at the time. Even with other boutiques in town, Stephanie says hers is still unique. “Sometimes, you might find the same brands, but there are always different styles and varieties no matter where they are offered.” Rather than trying to compete, Stephanie enjoys supporting other businesses and helping them to succeed. She encourages shoppers to visit a variety of boutiques and enjoys doing so herself. In fact, Stephanie has organized

area bus tours to help women discover boutiques in the region, including Blossom. She calls these events “Sip & Shop,” and ladies may purchase bus tickets to travel to a variety of boutiques in the area—as far away as Decatur, Indiana or St. Marys and Greenville, Ohio. Stephanie posts information on Blossom’s Facebook page, including dates and times, ticket cost (typically around $20 a person), and which boutiques the group will visit. The best part of a Sip & Shop, says Stephanie, is that she gets to “hang out with a bunch of girls all day.” She adds, “We have some drinks, go shopping, and do giveaways on the bus.”

But, the primary goal is to help promote local businesses. Stephanie says she is very “pro-women in business,” and she strongly encourages women to support one another in their endeavors. She even has advice for those considering business ownership. “It’s very easy to get wrapped up in getting a POS system, the best racks and hangers, etc.,” but Stephanie emphasizes the importance of growing into these things. At the moment, Stephanie says she is comfortable with where she’s at in her business, and her plan is to continue providing great styles for her customers. Stephanie enjoys getting to know her customers and their preferences, as well as making sure the desired styles are available. 36
Stephanie will host another Sip & Shop in December—good timing, to be sure, as ladies need to complete their Christmas shopping soon. She’s hoping to visit shops near Greenville, Ohio and, perhaps, stop at the Versailles Winery along the way.

‘LATHER UP’ AT HEARTSTRINGS HEARTSTRINGS
E
ditor’s Note: Heartstrings was featured in our October 2016 edition. We were disappointed to learn some details in the article simply were not accurate. Details are important to small business owners like Jeannie, and because small business owners are important to us, we gave her the opportunity to set the record straight.
The spirit of the holidays is alive and merry at Heartstrings as the rural Markle, Indiana shop enjoys the busyness of Christmas. But customers from far and near the “destination shop” will quickly say that holiday spirit is fully alive throughout the year. Jeannie Bayless is the owner of Heartstrings/Lather Up soaps. Although the business originated as a place to purchase natural, DECEMBER 2016 | wabashvalleyliving.com | 38

homemade soaps, over the last 20 years, the product lines have grown to body lotions, body butters, lip balms — Jeannie’s No. 1 seller — and sheet sprays and bath bombs. “Lather Up products are created in small batches to ensure their quality,” Jeannie notes. “The purest essential oils and finest fragrances are used. In addition, Lather Up incorporates organic ingredients wherever possible.” She adds, “I strive to support American made and grown ingredients. I believe in supporting the environment by using recyclable packaging.” Lather Up soaps are manufactured with vegetable oils from sustainable sources, never using animal fats or inferior oils. “My customers love the skin soothing qualities of Lather Up handmade soap,” Jeannie says.
“An advantage of my soap is the natural occurring glycerin remaining in the final product. It is not processed out, therefore leaving your skin soft and glowing.”
It’s not uncommon for Jeannie’s customers to drive to the country from nearby Fort Wayne. On any given day, visitors travel in from Muncie, Indianapolis and even farther.
The Heartstrings/Lather Up shop is — literally — surrounded by corn and soybean fields of Wells County. Once inside the shop, which is located in a pole barn, one quickly notices many other merchandise items of interest.
“I have the best customers in the world,” says a grateful Jeannie. “I have the most gracious and kind and ego-boosting customers that a woman could ever ask for. I am ever so grateful that people literally have to drive a little bit to get to me.”
“All of my products take center stage,” says Jeannie, “but I love to embellish and use outside sources for unique architectural pieces, textiles, a little bit of food, candles, and home decor so that we can kind of build all kinds of gifts.” Opening with just one room in 1998, the shop expanded with additional rooms in 2001 and 2003.
She said, “I take as a personal compliment everybody who walks in my door, and I don’t take that for granted.” On occasion, Jeannie has incorporated a customers’ suggestions when they offer, “This is great. Can you do this scent or something that smells this way?”

Natural soaps and products have been good for Jeannie. What began as an interest, and then a remedy to her child’s allergies, became a lifetime passion. Jeannie notes that the start of her business was based on a need: a need to generate revenue “to help take care of my three children (now adults) and get them a good start in life past high school — to provide a way for them to get to college — and a way for me to generate income to become self sufficient and independent.”
