IN PURSUIT OF WELLNESS ALTER CHIROPRACTIC HEALTH SERVICES • AMY M. ORR

hen asked how he came to pursue his current field, Dr. Michael Alter responds, “Actually, I think the career pursued me! I grew up in a wonderfully diverse family where I was exposed to talent in a variety of the healing arts.” He adds, “Starting in grade school, I remember doing year after year of science fair projects based on how different foods and nutrients affect the body. As a third grader, I was asked to give a brief lecture at a school assembly on the spine and how it works, using a spine model, x-rays and an overhead projector.” Dr. Alter completed his undergraduate education at Indiana University School
of Medicine before earning a doctorate, with honors, at Palmer Chiropractic University in Davenport, Iowa. He has since earned certifications or advanced training in: x-ray physics and diagnosis, chiropractic pediatrics, sports injury and extremity rehabilitation, Advanced Clinical Nutritional Physiology, and preand post-surgical management of cervical and lumbar disc herniation. During his education, Dr. Alter worked as an EMT. In the early 1990s, he completed an internship and clinical rounds in Tuscon, Arizona. Dr. Alter started his own practice in 1992, joining two brothers who are also chiropractors in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and he opened a satellite office in Berne, as well.

“The Berne office grew very quickly,” he recalls, “and needed my full-time attention. Just two years into practice, we required a move to a larger facility.” Dr. Alter moved to an office on Marshall Street in Decatur, where his practice continued to grow for the next eight years. Alter Chiropractic Health Services relocated one last time to its current location on Morningstar Boulevard—a quiet spot with tranquil views of a shallow pond. Not surprisingly, back pain is one of the most common complaints Dr. Alter addresses. But, he also sees many chiropractic patients for headaches and infant colic, as well.
“We are not either healthy or sick,” says the doctor, “but rather always on a continuum of becoming more or less healthy, based on the lifestyle choices we make or the events that happen to us—which are sometimes out of our control. Chiropractic health care works to identify issues and address obstacles to functioning optimally and, therefore, overall wellbeing. “The chiropractic focus is on the structural relationships in our body that ultimately influence our nervous system. The nervous system is the master control for our body. “Things such as hormones, blood flow, immunity and, indeed, every

cell in the body are directly or indirectly controlled by the nervous system. Doctors of chiropractic are uniquelytrained and qualified in this type of care, which has been proven to be safe and, often, the most effective form of non-invasive care available.” How does one benefit from routine chiropractic adjustments? “The simple answer is that it is much easier to stay well than to get well,” responds Dr. Alter. “How long do you want to function properly? If it’s a long time, then routine wellness checkups make a lot more sense than waiting until something breaks or becomes diseased.” Dr. Alter’s focus on wellness doesn’t end with chiropractic services. “My latest certification is in functional medicine, and I am pursuing an additional doctorate-level diplomat degree from the American Clinical Board of Nutrition.” Following this, he plans to continue the specialty training at the Institute for Functional Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. “I decided to go forward with the more advanced functional medicine training because of the significant number of patients that were experiencing more and more chronic disease—and presenting with these issues at an earlier age. Many were not satisfied with the direction of care they had been receiving. “All too often, patients’ concerns about symptoms are dismissed with ‘You’re just 8
getting older,’ ‘That’s normal for you,’ or the dreaded ‘You’ll have to live with it…at least, until it’s bad enough for surgery. No one had answers for these people—myself included—and that did not set well with me. I felt that there needed to be more options available, and functional medicine provides those options.” So, what is functional medicine? “Functional medicine focuses on uncovering the real causes of an illness. It moves beyond managing symptoms and conditions with prescriptions, so in that sense, it is a shift from traditional diseasecentered thinking to a more patient-centered approach. Functional medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms.” According to Dr. Alter, practitioners of functional medicine operate much like detectives. “We review your history, ask in-depth questions, and, as needed, examine the genetic, biological, environmental and lifestyle patterns that can influence long-term health and create complex, chronic disease.”

“If people do not eat the proper things in the proper amounts, then they should not be surprised when the body malfunctions. Sometimes, the bad instructions tell our body to act swiftly—like in food poisoning—but more often, it is a gradual process resulting in more chronic illness and dysfunction developing over time. “Remember that food is like instructions for your body. What are YOU telling it to do?” While patients often come to Dr. Alter with symptoms including pain, fatigue, depression, and hormonal issues, the underlying problem may be surprising. “What I find unusual,” he explains, “is the variety of serious health crisis conditions that can stem from something many people may not realize has anything to do with their symptoms—their gut. “Immune function depends on the health of the gut, and the majority of neurotransmitters are produced by the gut. Things like yeast or fungal infections, bacterial infections, toxins, intestinal permeability (leaky gut), stress and drugs are now found to be common factors contributing to pain, fatigue, sleep issues, anxiety, depression, attention deficit and cognition disorders, autoimmune disorders and chronic inflammatory diseases.” Nutrition is a key to treating some of these health problems. But, there isn’t a one-size-fitsall solution. “The majority of people are confused about what a healthy diet is,” Dr. Alter says. “One of the reasons for this is 10

everything in my ability to get you to someone who can help you.
“Infants, children, athletes, adults, seniors, male, female, and different ethnic groups have different nutritional needs, even if everyone is perfectly healthy. Everybody is unique and needs a different set of instructions based on their heredity, stress levels, etc.
“It is beneficial for both of us for you to reach your health goals, so my promise to all of our patients is that, to the best of my ability, I will not waste your time or money, and that we all will do our very best for you.”
“What works for one person is not necessarily right for their neighbor. It’s important to understand and address these differences.” This is where a functional medicine physician can help—“prescribing” the nutritional elements that are best suited to an individual’s needs. And, Dr. Alter is ready to help.

he Christmas holidays are once again a memory, and many of us overdid our celebrating with less-than-healthy foods. Where can you go to rid yourself of the post-holiday "blahs" and start a healthier regimen for the new year? In Van Wert, you can visit Van Wert Massotherapy, a onestop shop for alternative remedies and therapies. Owner Leslie Moser is a native of Kansas City, Missouri. From her childhood, she nursed a passion for helping others. When asked if she remembered when she first thought about becoming a massage therapist, Leslie smiled. "I had dreams (literal ones) of being a chiropractor when I was a child. I don't know when thoughts of being a massage therapist started, but they have run deep in me for a long time."

Leslie joined the Marine Corps as a young woman and met a young man from Van Wert. They hit it off, and after they were discharged in 1999, they married and moved to Van Wert. Leslie used her educational benefits as a veteran to study massage therapy at the Dayton School of Medical Massage. When she graduated, Leslie became a LMMT (Licensed Medical Massage Therapist). The Ohio State Medical Board provides the certification and title of Massage Therapist. Therapists are also insured, just like doctors and other medical workers, and, in order to maintain her license, Leslie has to attend continuing education classes each year. According to Massage Today, what is currently referred to as medical massage, bodywork, or somatic therapy, is one of the oldest
methods of healing. References to massage have been found in medical texts dating back to around 4000 B.C. Hippocrates, known as the father of medicine, refers to massage in his writings dating to the 4th century.
walls to half the building, dividing up the space into smaller rooms," Leslie shared. "We chose colors carefully, making the spaces not only pleasing to look at, but also calming to our clients."
Medical message is defined as the application of various techniques to the muscular structure and soft tissues of the body, providing release of tension, pain relief, lowering of blood pressure, increased flexibility and range of motion, and strengthening of the immune system, among many other benefits. When Leslie started working as a LMMT, she set up shop at the Good Earth Health and Nutrition in Van Wert. She was there for about 10 years before she outgrew the facility, so she began looking for another location. The building on the corner of Walnut and Central Streets had become available, and Leslie was able to purchase it. It had been a church before Leslie bought it, so the area inside— meant to hold a congregation at worship—was wide open. "One of the first things we did was add WEEKDAY

The building is so spacious that Leslie uses one half of the building as a meeting area for both health classes she offers and as a gathering area for different community groups. "We rent out the western half of the space for different purposes. Some families have rented it out for holiday dinners (there is a complete kitchen, with refrigerators, stoves, and running water); the Red Cross has used it for their classes in first aid; and we offer alternative health classes here, using different instructors in the area—classes in essential oils, aromotherapy, and so on," Leslie explained.

To help their clients continue wellness practices between appointments, Van Wert Massotherapy offers a full retail section with many types of healthrelated products. They are a JR Watkins store, stocking especially the health and beauty products the company offers. The selection also includes a large array of essential oils, as well as products that help you use the oils safely and correctly. Van Wert Massotherapy also sells Advocare products for general health, nutrition, and weight management. Currently, there are seven therapists and three receptionists working at Van Wert Massotherapy. Their "most mature" therapist is 86-year-old Betty Miller, a longtime resident of the area who has offered her expertise in massage to the community for many years. Other therapists include Heather Grant, Carlee AuFrance, and Jessica Detweiler. The group is rounded off by Marie King, an esthetician who specializes in skin care, and Pam Rusk, their resident Reiki master.
"We work with people of all ages here, from infants through geriatric clients," Leslie said. "We also work with area chiropractors, who send clients to us as referrals, especially with CranioSacral Therapy, which requires special training that our therapists have. And we work with hospice and Community Health Specialists to give comfort to terminal and home patients." Leslie Moser and the crew at Van Wert Massotherapy aim to offer a healthy alternative medical care to the Van Wert area. The next event they are offering is an Aroma Touch class on January 14, 2017. 25 YEARS OF BEEKEEPING SWEET LIFE HONEY FARM • AMY M. ORR
G
rowing up on a farm,” says Cindy Sheets, “you learn to work hard together. You learn that plans change often, especially with the weather. “Best of all, you learn to do things in the company of your family— who are also your biggest critics!” The Huntington County native spent her childhood on a small cattle and hog farm. Her parents, Charles and Charlene Sheets, still farm over 100 acres there and raise black Angus cattle. Cindy later reared her own children on what she calls a “mini farm.” Their livestock and crop choices were based on the family’s own needs—“from pigs, chickens, tomatoes, beans, apples, grapes, cherries and, of course, our beloved honeybees.”
When Cindy and her family first purchased a few bee hives in 1991, they never dreamed their new “hobby” would eventually become a significant source of income. She explains, “We started keeping bees because we had planted a small orchard, and the fruit trees were just not getting pollinated properly. “We heard that honeybees were the answer, so we bought a couple of hives—and fell in love with the bees.” The family sought the help of other beekeepers as they learned to care for their hives. And, Cindy’s children were very involved. “They both had their own bee suits,” she recalls, “and they went with us wherever the day led. My daughter Sadye is a climber and was often found not far from us in a suit in the top of a tree.” JANUARY 2017 | wabashvalleyliving.com | 17
Sadye adds, “Because I was small then, I didn’t have to work as hard as my brother. So, much of the time, I was able to play in the creeks near our apiaries—which made up some of the best time of my childhood.”
“Other factors play in, also, like the way that people takes care of their yards. Our pristine, green lawns that many Americans treat with chemicals has eliminated food sources for the bees—they like the clover and dandelions.”
Cindy adds, “My son was a little older when we first started, and he was typically at our sides. They often took naps under the truck where it was safe away from the bees and cool from the hot sun.”
Still, before Cindy and her family downsized to approximately 200 hives a couple years ago, their collection was the largest in the state of Indiana, at more than 4,000 hives. As the number of hives grew, the family began harvesting more honey than they could use. Cindy first started selling honey with a roadside stand that operated under the honor system.
Both children and bees flourished, though not without a few major challenges. In the mid-90s, Cindy says, the family lost over half of their hives to mites. She adds, “Keeping them alive is the hardest thing. It used to be easy. Now, there are many things that affect the health of the honeybee. Not only are there mites, beetles, and disease, but the latest problem was the colony collapse disorder.
“We only sell raw honey at our farm—the best stuff,” she says. “When you pasteurize honey, it destroys all the good stuff, like the vitamins, minerals and pollens that help boost our immune systems.

“Our honey is brought in, and we extract it by cutting the wax caps off and then spinning in a centrifuge. The honey is pulled out by centrifugal force and then is pumped into barrels for storage. It sounds simple, but it is a heavy, sticky job.” There are many uses for honey, beyond its nutritional values. “It helps our immune systems by building a resistance to pollens in the air. Why? Because bees work many of those plants that cause seasonal allergies, so if we eat some local honey, it helps build tolerance.” Since cough syrup is no longer recommended for young children, many moms look to a natural treatment—raw honey! But, Cindy points out, honey should not be given to a child under 12 months of age. Today, Cindy adds honey to a variety of other products offered at her store known as “The Bee Hive” located in the farm’s big red barn. “Honey is great for problematic skin, which is why we have it in

our line of skin care products. It is a natural humectant, meaning it helps hold or pull in moisture. “Honey is also a natural antibacterial—which is why it never spoils. Honey has been used for minor cuts and burns. In the bee yards, if someone got a bee sting, I would even use a dab of honey to help with the sting. “We make honey and beeswax soap in a variety of scents made with essential oils. Beeswax can be used for a bazillion things, but we use it in our line of skin care products because it has a natural SPF of about 4. In our lotions and lip balms, it also serves as a protective barrier to outdoor elements.” The Bee Hive also offers creamed honey, creamed cinnamon honey, peanut butter honey, vanilla bean honey and cut comb honey. Other items include beeswax candles, bees oil, which is used for cutting boards and wooden utensils, and other products made in Indiana, such as wooden ware, pottery, jewelry, popcorn, jams and more. 19
Cindy offers classes in basic beekeeping, soap making, basics of essential oils and blending essential oils. And, Sadye raises and sells queen bees and nucs, as well as packaged bees.
“Beekeeping was one of the best choices I have ever made for my family. It has taught me that plans fall through and having several back-up plans is vital. I am truly blessed.”
“I love the retail store,” Cindy says. “I love interacting with the customers and teaching classes. I make most of the products, but Sadye is really starting to help with some of those, too.”
The Bee Hive is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday—or, shop online.
A third generation has arrived on Sweet Life Honey Farm. Referring to her one-year old daughter, Sadye says, “She will probably not remember her experiences this year, but I’m sure I won’t forget sharing this great year with her.

PROMOTING GUN SKILLS AND SAFETY THARP FIREARMS AND TRAINING
I
t’s been an exciting first year in business for Jamie Tharp, owner and lead instructor of Tharp Firearms and Training in Decatur, Indiana. “We started up in January of 2016,” recalls Jamie, noting that when ISIS hit Paris in late 2015, many people feared terrorism was headed closer to home. “People were calling me asking, ‘Hey, can you train me in firearms?’ “They were concerned about where the world is heading these days. I held my first class the end of last January, and I’ve trained over 80 people since then.” Employed at the Decatur Police Department as a full-time officer for 17 years and as firearms instructor for 15 years, Jamie is well-known in the community. folks considered the purchase of a gun for protection, they turned to Jamie for training to go with the weapon. Although he had considered launching a firearms training business at some point in the future, possibly near retirement, requests from those in the community encouraged him to speed up his timeline. The classes are a compilation of the extensive training Jamie himself has taken over the years. “I took my first NRA class at age 16,” he recalls. “At 17, I joined the military and shot with the military police pistol team.” Later, he attended the firearms instructor program through the local police department. Jamie offers a variety of training sessions for families, civilians, and
those in law enforcement. Each class focuses on a particular firearm – handgun, carbine rifle, or shotgun. Students bring their own gun and ammo to the class. Training consists of approximately eight hours of instruction divided between the classroom and the shooting range. Jamie purposely limits the size of each class to eight or nine participants so he can provide one-on-one instruction and offer real-time feedback to individuals at the shooting range. “There’s instruction on the various parts of the gun, how to hold the gun, how to stand when shooting, and sight alignment,” he shares. “Then it’s on to the maintenance of the gun.” Jamie instructs students on the proper way to break down the gun, clean it, and then put it back together.

“We also cover the mindset of owning a gun,” he says. His instruction stresses the practicality and responsibility of both owning and using firearms, as well as the importance of gun safety education in the home when small children are involved. “In every class, the biggest thing is safety, safety, safety,” Jamie says. “We reiterate safety all day long.” Advanced classes cover topics such as concealment. “If you’re carrying a firearm for personal protection, you must be conscious of where you go, what you do, and how you present yourself in public,” he says. “If you’re going to use a firearm, it should be the last resort.” 29

Because there are some places you cannot carry a firearm such as an airplane or into court, Jamie also teaches an unarmed self-defense class. The threehour introductory class is taught at Anytime Fitness in Decatur. Both men and women benefit from this class that stresses the need for situational awareness. “Awareness can prevent a person from getting into situations that would be dangerous,” he says. Jamie’s youngest class participant to date was age thirteen, and the oldest, a seventy-five-year-old who had never shot a gun. While anyone under eighteen must be accompanied by a parent, Jamie is often asked how young is too young to participate in a class, a decision he leaves up to the parent. “You know your child best,” he points out. “Can they sit through four hours of lecture that touches on adult topics? Are they responsible enough to listen at the shooting range?”

or many preparing for a night out or weekend away, the perfect outfit is all it takes to help with that extra boost of confidence. Whether it’s finding the right pair of jeans, the trendiest sweater or just jewelry to match, there is a wide array of possibilities around the corner. Thanks to fitness and activity trackers like Fitbit, many people can track the number of steps they take using on any given day. But, some might not consider the importance of proper foot care— even though most of us spend a lot of time on our feet!
Like many other aspects of wellness, quite often, we barely give any thought to this part of the body until an injury occurs or an injury or disease appears. Then, the need to care for our ankles and feet becomes obvious. Foot health is essential to basic human functions every day. Here’s where Dr. Darby Wehrley comes in—he’s a podiatrist who specializes in foot and ankle care and treatment. His offices at Agility Foot and Ankle Specialty Center aim “to provide patients with the highest quality of foot and ankle care.”

Agility Foot and Ankle Specialty Center offers easilyaccessible locations in both Celina, Ohio and Portland, Indiana, where Dr. Wehrley and his staff provide professional care. Dr. Wehrley has hospital privileges at Mercer County Community Hospital in Coldwater, Ohio and Jay County Hospital in Portland, Indiana. The doctor treats a wide variety of conditions, including: ankle sprains and fractures,
pain, high arched feet, ingrown toenails, infections, tendonitis and tears, pain, lumps and bumps, arthritic conditions, nerve conditions and neuromas, athletes foot, orthotics, bunions, calluses and corns, abnormalities, chronic pain, club feet, sports injuries, diabetic foot care, sesamoiditis, flatfeet, fractures, tarsal tunnel syndrome, deformities, fungus, warts, gout, joint pain, hammertoes, and more. "The human foot is quite a masterpiece,” says Dr. Wehrley. “Multifaceted in function, the foot is comprised of 26 bones, 33 joints, and more than 100 tendons, muscles and ligaments packaged in a relatively small size, together with blood vessels and nerve networks. Both feet contain approximately one-quarter of all the bones in the body.” He adds, “Foot conditions are among the most common of our health problems. Studies show 75-percent of Americans will experience foot problems at some point in their lives. A smaller percentage will seek care, as most feel discomfort and pain are normal.

“A statistic I have yet to see is one that shows the percentage of people who self-diagnose and self-treat. The scenario exists, and this can be a little scary.” Fortunately, Dr. Wehrley’s office welcomes all conditions of the foot and ankle. The most common complaints he addresses include skin and nail issues, deformities, pain-

As Dr. Wehrley points out, people typically don’t just “wake up and want to be a foot doctor.” There is much more to it than that. Podiatry is a science that involves many fields, and after job shadowing in a variety of medical paths, the doctor says it “just seemed to fit” his interests in math, science, and helping and educating others. Now in his 10th year of practice, Dr. Wehrley has learned quite a bit along the way, especially in the areas of problem solving, research and education. He draws from a number of experiences to help find the right solution in each patient’s case, and that’s also where his innate interests in math and science are valuable assets. When seeing patients, Dr. Wehrley’s primary goal is “to help people, first and foremost.” Dr. Wehrley grew up in Tipp City, Ohio. He met his wife Monica, who was originally from St. Henry, in Dayton, Ohio at Wright State University. The doctor-in-training knew she was “the one” when he realized she was going to be there for him during his many years of schooling and residency.

After Dr. Wehrley had completed his training, he recalls, “My wife and I wished to raise our family in the Midwest, and we settled here.” Celina provided a small-town feel, while also being the hub of the county. Dr. Wehrley 36

equal to several hundred tons of pressure on both feet.
The doctor says, “I am often asked, Why did you choose to focus just on the feet? My response is there is a whole person connected to them, so you have to evaluate the whole person.
“Arthritis, including gout, often attacks the foot first. Other systemic issues, such as diabetes, circulatory disorders, anemia or dietary deficiencies, and kidney issues can first be detected in the podiatric exam.”
“Mechanically, if the foot has an issue, the condition may lead to a problem higher up, such as a leg, hip or back issue. Research demonstrates an average day of walking can generate forces of
Good hygiene is the doctor’s first recommendation in caring for feet and ankles. “Daily cleansing and inspection is a good start,” he says. “Dry between toes after bathing. Cut your toenails properly—avoid
cutting too close to the skin or drastically rounding the corners. “Keep your feet clean and dry— and wear socks. Protect your feet in public areas. “Diet and exercise can be beneficial. If you have a routine exercise program, or if you’re a weekend warrior, prepare for the activity, stretching pre- and postexercise. “Make good choices with shoe gear selection and use. Inspect your current shoe gear. Breathable shoes are generally best. Do not share shoes.” But, perhaps Dr. Wehrley’s most valuable advice relates to pain. “Do your feet hurt?” he asks. “Pain is not normal. Seek medical care as soon as a question or concern arises.”
he has assisted underserved individuals through Children’s Medical Missions West, a nonprofit organization that provides transportation to the United States and free medical care for children from third-world countries. Dr. Wehrley has also served on the board of directors for a local hospice organization, as well as several hospital administration committees. And, in the fall, he says, “You can find me on the sidelines during Friday night football.”

illions of people around the world these days are pet “parents” of some kind. Creatures large and small offer much value to their human counterparts, no matter a person’s age. These precious gems teach, bring joy and comfort, and offer a special kind of companionship for one’s heart, soul and general wellbeing. Perfect Pet is a local business providing for many animal needs, including pet foods, accessories and full-service grooming. Amanda Clark and Emily Striker are the proud new owners of this establishment in Bluffton, Indiana. The pair took ownership as of June 1, 20016.

Prior to this new adventure, Amanda founded her very own successful business, Canine Crossroads Training and Rescue Center, located right outside of Bluffton in Liberty center, in 2000. In addition to behavior modification classes, boarding and specialty training, Canine Crossroads rescues, rehabilitates, and places abused, unwanted, and abandoned companion animals. Emily has been an employee of Canine Crossroads since 2008. The two ladies, both natives of Wells County, are licensed and hold degrees in professional dog training, and both share the same passion for animals and for helping people with their pets. Amanda and Emily love educating owners about what is best for their

pets in regards to nutrition, personality, exercise and so on. Amanda and Emily both received professional training at National K-9 School for Dog Trainers in Columbus, Ohio. Prior to the ownership change, Perfect Pet was founded in 2005 by John Zezulak. John and his wife Sally had left the corporate world—he had been a top sales manager for Pepsi Co., while Sally had worked in magazine publishing—to pursue a completely different sort of career.
GEELS BACKHOE Service
At Perfect Pet, John focused on natural, holistic and multiprotein pet food brands. He learned as much as he could about pet health and nutrition and took on a consultative role with customers. “Tell me about your pet, and I can help you with that issue” became the standard greeting at the store.
“Custom Digging”
John provided permanent solutions to everyday problems that were frustrating to pet owners. The strategy was a tremendous success, and he then opened two more stores with the same philosophy, carefully training managers and staff so the business would stand apart from typical retail operations in the industry. In just two years, John and Sally had opened three Perfect Pet locations—two in Fort Wayne and one, of course, in Bluffton. In 2015, the husband and wife decided to retire and sell their successful stores. Once the public learned the Bluffton store was up for sale, Amanda and Emily decided to team up, and together, they purchased the shop. 41

Team work is a key to a successful business, say the owners. Fortunately, they have a perfect combination of expertise, as each employee brings something unique to the plate. The Perfect Pet staff includes Amber Pfister (groomer), Sadey Ertman and Erika Parsons. The five ladies enjoy working together. They say they have fun and share a good deal of laughter on a daily basis. This working environment carries over to create a pleasant experience for customers who enter the store, and this makes it easier for a client to leave their “fur baby” in someone else’s care. It helps to know the caregiver is a lover of animals and will make it a calm and safe visit. Animals are very sensitive and can pick up on emotion around them. Studies have shown when the parent is feeling sad, the pet detects it immediately and stays nearby as if trying to console the parent. An animal’s behavior often changes when they feel tension or chaos in the air. Perfect Pet offers 15 different varieties of pet food at excellent prices. The staff also provides pet grooming services, including Bath (clean nails, ears, face, anal gland, shampooing, conditioning, blow drying and brush out); Face, Feet
and Fanny (Bath, plus trim face, feet and fanny); and Full Grooming (Bath, plus trim everywhere). Pricing is reasonable, with amazing results. Pet Perfect carries many pet care items for small animals ranging from mice, lizards, birds, rabbits, cats and small to large dogs. They also offer help with issues such as hair loss or excessive shedding, itching, hot spots, or ear scratching, and stomach disorders. The Bluffton store also has a wide variety of toys, bedding, kennels, pet clothing, and lots of accessories. And, don’t miss the selection of fancy cookie treats! Amanda and Emily are very involved with pet-related organizations, including PAWS of Adams County, Midwest Pet Refuge, Animal House Sanctuary, and of course, Canine Crossing Training and Rescue Center. They are cautious about placing pets to be sure they choose the right homes—an application is required before a pet placement decision is made. Away from the store, Amanda and her husband Brett have three boys—Caben (14), Caine (13) and Colten (10)—to keep them busy, between sporting events and their favorite outdoor activities. Emily
and her husband John are busy, as well, with their daughter Mackenzie (3½) and another baby girl that will be arriving any day now. Perfect Pet is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Call ahead to schedule grooming appointments.
