G Bringing Back the Classics Article by Jaci Gorrell
nown for its homemade root beer and made-toorder coney dogs, Trees Drive-In has been an enduring favorite in Berne, Indiana for many years. Now under the ownership of Mike and Elease Kreischer, the establishment has been dubbed “Millie’s Trees Drive-In” and continues to sell its time-honored menu selections and more. Mike and Elease’s decision to purchase the restaurant was based, in part, on the timing of the opportunity. Elease explains, “My mom and stepdad own Chatt Bar, and they found out about this place’s availability first. “It was a great opportunity for us because my parents had owned a restaurant previous to Chatt, so I grew up in the business. She adds, “We also saw it as a way that I could be home with our girls
through the winter. And, then, we could run the restaurant through the summer time.” Though Millie’s Trees appeared to be a good fit for the couple, there were several necessary repairs that caused setbacks for the reopening last summer. Elease recalls, “The State required us to put in a new well and a new septic holding tank before we could open. “But, while we were working on that, other things came up. We also had to put in a new roof and new ceilings.” Along with the necessary repairs, Mike and Elease added a few upgrades to the facility, including an extended seating area. “We had metal installed above the porch, and then had ceiling fans put in,” Elease recounts. May 2016 | wabashvalleyliving.com | 5
“Recently, we’ve added a north porch for more seating room. People have liked the fans so much that we are going to add them to part of the north porch, as well.” After all of the unexpected repairs and additions, Mike and Elease were able to open Millie’s Trees Drive-In last July, though they had originally planned to open in April. As first-year business owners, the couple was grateful for the experience they had garnered from involvement with Chatt Bar and other restaurants. Elease marvels, “It’s just helped in so many ways—having a businessoriented mind, knowing some of the expectations. Having parents
who own restaurants, Mike and I know how to cook, how to wait on customers, everything from licensing and a lot of the little things that most people wouldn’t know about until you’re actually in it and realize that there’s a lot more to it than you’d thought.” As far as the grub goes, Mike and Elease have made an intentional effort to provide local favorites from the previous menu. “One of the things that this place was known for was the Slinger,” Elease says. “It’s a milkshake made with vanilla ice cream, orange Crush, and pineapple and strawberry topping. It’s one thing that I’ve really come to like here because it tastes so fresh!

In fact, according to Elease, one of the most gratifying things about her job is the local people that she gets to meet and interact with. “Not only the customers,” she adds, “but also, the employees. By the end of the year last year, I felt like we’d gained another family, and that was really nice.”

Indeed, the past notoriety of Trees Drive-In and its food added another complication to the first-year learning curve for Mike and Elease. “That was a challenge; it wasn’t a bad challenge, by any means. It was just living up to what’s been here before.

“One of our biggest sellers last year was our tenderloin,” Elease reports. “We actually make our own tenderloin, and that’s Mike’s project. He takes care of it and processes all the pork loin.”

Though operating Millie’s Trees Drive-In as new business owners presented some difficulties, Elease says, “I gained a lot of appreciation from this, just knowing how hard it is to run a business. It’s definitely been a learning curve for us, but it’s been blessing—even in the worst challenges! “The people of Berne have welcomed us with open arms, and we really appreciate that!” Millie’s Trees Drive-In has opened for its second season, and the Kreischers are ready for customers! They begin serving at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday and Monday and at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Hours vary throughout the season. Elease explains, “Before school gets out, we’ll stay open until 8:00 p.m. in the evenings during the week and 9:00 p.m. on the weekends. As summer comes, I expect that we’ll be open a little later.” Customers can reach Millie’s Trees Drive-In by phone. Or, send private messages by way of Millie’s Facebook page. t’s very refreshing when a man talks about his work with a lilt in his voice, a twinkle in his eye, a broad smile and happy laugh. That’s just the sort of experience you’ll have when you speak to Rob Adams at Laurie’s Naturescapes just outside Van Wert on State Route 118. For instance, should you mistakenly inquire if “Laurie” is Rob’s wife (like I did), he’ll chuckle before answering, “No, Laurie is my mother-in-law. Bob and Laurie Long were the owners of P&L Fertilizer and the grain elevator in Middle Point when they opened Laurie’s Naturescapes in 2002.” Like his in-laws, Rob is a local boy–the son of Dr. Robert Adams. He’s also a graduate of Ohio State University and holds a degree in horticulture and landscape design.
Following college, Rob came back home to Van Wert and worked for a while in insurance. When he met Bob and Laurie’s daughter, Madison, it changed his direction in life. In 2010, just a couple years after Rob and Madison were married, he joined the family business and has not looked back. “It’s great to come to work and do what you’ve been trained to do, and love it, at the same time,” Rob says. At Laurie’s Naturescapes, you’ll find three areas of service—almost like three businesses in one. First, there is the nursery, which includes the flowers and plants that require special treatment. “We don’t do any growing here,” Rob explains, “although we could.“Instead, we purchase our inventory from local growers. 9

“Instead, we purchase our inventory from local growers. You can buy trees, bushes, flowering plants, houseplants—really, anything you need in the way of decorative plants and shrubbery.” Second, Laurie’s Naturescapes operates a small gift shop. And, what a shop it is! From beautiful greenery arrangements and interesting wooden and metal containers for both indoors and outdoors, to the tools, soils, and growing aids you need to get your own green thumb operating, Laurie’s has what you need. There are displays of aromatic candles of all sizes and scents, arranged with pedestals and concrete statues that would enhance any size room or lawn. Rustic metal sculptures are scattered throughout the store— oversized flowers and peace signs among them, many created by Rob and Madison. New this year at Laurie’s Naturescapes is the artist’s nook toward the back of the shop. Laurie and her family wish to display local artists’ creations for the public to enjoy and purchase. Although they are not actively searching for more merchandise, they will sell local products on consignment.
“My dad is quite the artist,” says Rob. “We have a number of his paintings out here. And, one of our employees, Harry Miller, has a wife who is quite good at jewelrymaking. We have a large display of her creations here in the nook, also.” The third division of Laurie’s Naturescapes is a growing landscaping business. Rob smiles, “Laurie made this my area of expertise. “Our primary business is with private homes and small office complexes. Most recently, we have worked on the landscape design for the new Wassenburg Art Center on Washington Street in Van Wert. “We’re always in the market to help small businesses make their physical presence more beautiful and professional-looking.” Behind the store at Laurie’s Naturescapes is a courtyard, where customers can enjoy a stroll or sit among trellises that surround and overhang the area. “Add some food and drinks, and it’s a great way of spending an afternoon—checking out the new designs in the store and then walking about with the kids, enjoying nature. You’ll get some great ideas for your own lawn design.”

Living from the Past Article by Jim Kirkwood
ulture Culture Vintage is a very upbeat and classy store, just like its enthusiastic and engaging owner. It’s similar to something you might find on Times Square in New York City—but, with its spacious display area, it is much larger than most stores there. Michelle Seibold opened the current location of her vintage clothing business on Main Street in Portland, Indiana, moving from north Meridian Street on February 1, 2016. “This location is perfect,” she says, “since it is literally 500 feet from my house.” Michele has an unusual history. She has matured from gradeschool dropout to become owner and manager of a related set of businesses, which include not only this store in Portland, but also a large presence on Internet—selling items on her website, as well as eBay and Etsy. 14
“Originally, my field of expertise was in animal welfare and care. I have been a veterinary technician, a kennel manager for a humane society, and an animal control officer. I did a lot of work with animals, and that is my passion.” You might say Michelle has a unique view of life. “I am a person who is cripplingly creative,” she explains, “which has led me down many interesting avenues, including touring the U.S. as a musician for a couple of years.” Then came another shift in her life. “As I was wrapping up my singing career, I was forced to consider my finances. “I had a dog I loved, and his health and comfort were my main concern. My dog looked to me for sustenance, and I wanted to be sure he never went hungry.”
Offer valid at this location only. Restrictions apply. See store for details. Expires 6/30/16.
To earn some cash, Michelle advertised a pair of her own shoes on eBay, which quickly sold. “This seemed a good source of money to provide food and shelter for me and my dog.” Michelle says she lived by one motto: “Desperation breeds creativity.” Her dog never had to go hungry. Following that first sale, Michelle continued to market and sell shoes from her own large collection on eBay. They were “good quality men’s and women’s shoes, all vintage, with quality leather, beautiful lines, and so on,” she says. “Then, I started buying and selling vintage jackets and coats. Coats are abundant, and so beautiful.” Michelle’s presence on eBay predates most other vintage clothing vendors. “A lot of hobbyists have now flooded the market with inferior vintage furs and have done a number on people who sell high quality vintage by devaluing the 16
amount of work that professional vintage sellers put into their craft.” The prices on the vintage items Michelle sells vary, depending on the quality of her purchases. “People don’t understand why I would price something for say, $70, and others are selling it for $30.” The answer lies in Michelle’s expertise in selecting desirable items for sale, meticulously preparing them, and displaying them artfully online or in-store. “I pay for a model to present the garment—after I clean and repair it, so it is as close to impeccable as possible for, sometimes, 70-yearold garments,” she explains. Michelle does the marketing photography in a studio at home. “I have a large room with a walk-in closet for the models to change in during our photo sessions. People sometimes ask me, ‘Are these catalog photos?’ “No, these models are gorgeous local girls—girls I might meet at a restaurant or a store, where I give them my card.”
The larger, front portion of the shop on Main Street provides customers with a well-lighted display of a large variety of vintage clothing. As you wander through Vulture Culture Vintage, looking at clothing, jewelry, and scents, you “can get lost for hours,” as Michelle puts it. “I really love to cater to people who understand vintage,” she adds. “I have clients who come in from New York, Charlotte, Chicago, etc. “They know that the prices are really good, and they love to buy from me. Since I don’t have additional expenses associated with selling online, I can cut great deals in the brick-and-mortar shop.” Michelle relies on her creativity and experience for finding and stocking extraordinary vintage clothing, jewelry and other interesting items. She attracts a clientele that shares a similar passion for creativity. Enthusiastic in everything she does, Michelle explains, “We call it a ‘gift from the vintage gods’ that will bring the right person together with the right piece. It’s like the stars align when that happens.
“It’s a great feeling to put someone in an amazing, affordable vintage piece that qualifies, in today’s fashion scenes, as absolute couture.” Vulture Culture Vintage carries vintage furs, although Michelle the animal-lover does not offer new furs. “I don’t advocate people wearing new furs,” she says. “If they do wear furs, I insist that they wear vintage. And, I donate 10-percent of all fur sales to wildlife rehabilitation and rescue groups.” Michelle’s profits come from advantageous purchases, and by restoring, cleaning and rehabilitating vintage items and artfully displaying them. She maintains, “Even the homemade pieces from the 1950s are made with better quality and pride and workmanship than the highestpriced couture pieces are made today.” It is worth a trip to Vulture Culture Vintage simply to see the mannequins Michelle and her husband, Steve, have repaired and restored. Michelle operates
another business, known as Super Mannequin—one of only five businesses in the United States that restore mannequins. Each immaculate mannequin in her store tells its own story by the vivid expressions Michelle has painted on its face and by the items it wears.

Making Fitness a Lifestyle Article by Beth Steury
n the world of small business, it’s not unusual for a “five-year plan” to take six, seven—even ten years—to become a reality. But, that wasn’t the case for Dawn Stevens, of Berne, Indiana.
“On February 14, 2014, I started my own weight loss journey. I had been on similar journeys before, but this time it clicked because it was more about a community and having a support system.
“My five-year plan was to have my own studio,” she shares. But when the perfect solution appeared out of nowhere last October— only about one year into her new business—Dawn grabbed hold of the opportunity and hasn’t looked back since.
“I became a Beachbody coach. The program includes an online accountability group that surrounds participants with people on the same mission.”
“I had always wanted to be in careers that help people or make people feel good. I was a hairstylist, I was a CNA, and at one I point, I wanted to be a doctor,” says the mother of four boys, ranging between 4 and 14 years of age.
Dawn had always enjoyed attending fitness classes, but after she received certification in the Beachbody format of PiYo (a blend of Pilates and yoga) in June of 2014, she says she realized, “I want to teach this.” So, Dawn began to lead fitness sessions at various locations around Berne, including the Arthur & Gloria Muselman Wellness Pavilion, Chalet Village Health & Rehabilitation, and Lehman Park.

“Mirrors were already there, and the floor was good. It was move-in ready,” she remembers. Dawn opened Comeback Kingdom Fitness Center on Jackson Street in Monroe. She hosted her first fitness class at the newly-leased facility next to Shaka Shack on October 5, 2015. Comeback Kingdom initially offered two evening classes, followed by the addition of morning classes. Just six months later, the fitness center offers 15 class sessions, spanning Monday through YOUR ORDER Saturday each week, in a Carry-Out & continuous year-roundDelivery cycle.only Expires 5/31/16

Before her excitement could be dampened, her spontaneous nature conjured up various scenarios for teaching this new workout. As level-headed friends helped her sort through the ideas, the perfect solution presented itself in the form of the former dance studio in downtown Monroe.

Then, she discovered the high intensity P90X workout, a 90-day home fitness system. When the opportunity for a complimentary P90X certification fell into her lap, Dawn jumped at the chance.

Friday & Saturday
An early morning Saturday 320 S. Main St. moms, Geneva, IN 46740 class is popular with (260) 368-7878 as it finishes before the kids’ Saturday sports events get underway. And, late evening classes appeal to mothers who schedule a little “me” time after the kids are in bed.

Two more instructors joined Dawn in April. Jamie Moore began teaching Cize, a workout program that involves hip-hop choreography, while Jamie Rinkenberger took over the P90X sessions. The 60-minute, 9-segment PiYo workout is modifiable to individual situations. “It has a dance feel. It is very flowing. “It can replace your typical strength training, such as with dumbbells or weights, because you’re doing push-ups and lunges. You will strengthen and increase muscle tone just with your own body.” A 30-minute PiYo express workout is also available.
Comeback Kingdom added Bootcamp, a high-intensity interval training (HIT workout), in April, as well. “With this program, you can maximize your lung capacity in two weeks, versus running or using the elliptical, which requires six to eight weeks for the same results.” All of these workouts can be suited to people at any fitness level and for any age. “I go through and show modifications for levels 1, 2, and 3,” Dawn explains. “People worry the workouts are too intense, but that’s not the case. I have participants in their 50s, and my youngest is a 9 year-old.”

At Comeback Kingdom, the first fitness class is always free. After that, clients may choose to pay a $5 “drop-in” fee per class or purchase a punch card for 10 sessions, priced at $40. Dawn says her clients like how the purchase of the punch card provides incentive to continue with the program. “Beachbody offers everything you need for success,” Dawn adds. “Participants commit to drinking Shakeology and to joining an online Challenge Group.” The recent development of the Beachbody app makes it convenient to stay connected. Shakeology is a superfood nutrition shake, available in seven flavors, that contains components often missing from the typical diet. “It’s not a protein shake or a weight loss supplement,” Dawn stresses. Rather, it’s formulated with stress-reducing herbs, vitamins and minerals designed to help the body reach optimal levels and to aid in digestion. Dawn has worked diligently to cultivate an atmosphere of community within the various classes at Comeback Kingdom—and class participants have been willing to assist. “It’s a community in our classes,” she says. “Someone will approach you, ask your name, and they will remember it. “The group aspect really appeals to me, as well as the positive messaging. Personal development is one of Beachbody’s vital behaviors, because if our cup is empty, we have nothing to give.” 30
A unique service offered to clients of Comeback Kingdom is the Clothes Closet, where participants may leave clothing as they drop sizes and trade for smaller-sized clothing left by others.

“I love our location,” says Dawn. “It’s not a high-traffic area, but it’s centralized. I have clients in Decatur, Bluffton and Ohio.” She admits, “My morning classes would be better attended if I offered childcare.” There’s the potential in the future to expand into the upstairs of the building, providing the option for childcare, as well as for simultaneous class sessions. In the meantime, a kids’ boot camp is planned for this summer, with different meeting locations throughout the series. Dawn’s choice for her business name—Comeback Kingdom— embodies two important aspects of the programs there. “Comeback,” she explains, “because everyone deserves a comeback. And kingdom, because you’re not in this alone.”

The Mother of Invention Article by Jodi Dean
or rural Bluffton, Indiana resident Paul Clements, the path to owning a greenhouse business was laid with a request from his wife. He explains, “She wanted to grow orchids yearround.” Since Indiana’s weather is much too harsh for 365-days-a-year gardening, Paul concluded, “I need to purchase a greenhouse for her.” A native of Great Britain, who had accepted the chief engineer position at Crown Unlimited in 1987, Paul determined to find a greenhouse of similar quality to those commonly found in his homeland. So he conducted a bit of research and visited many major manufacturers and suppliers throughout the United States.
But, Paul was not satisfied with the options available. “Many were rubbish or junk,” he says. “They were flimsy and deplorable.” Finally, the devoted husband flew to Seattle, Washington, where he located a greenhouse that he thought was just right. He purchased it and brought it back home. Unfortunately, says Paul, “At one o’clock in the morning, on a windy night, an officer from the Wells County Sheriff’s Department showed up on my doorstep and told me to remove my greenhouse from the middle of the road— immediately.”

Despite the setback, Paul was not deterred. An engineer by trade, he specialized in designing automated machines and systems used in the manufacturing of heating and air-conditioning products, mainly for the automotive industry. If the perfect greenhouse was not available from any retailer in the United States, he would design and build one himself. Paul traveled to Great Britain and purchased a number of the best units available from various European manufacturers. He then took certain features from each model and developed a sort of hybrid—incorporating the best design, the highest quality and strongest durability.
When Paul was finished, his model could withstand the low temperatures and harsh winds of Midwestern winter for yearround gardening. He had built a greenhouse he loved—and his wife loved it, too! It wasn’t long before friends and neighbors heard about Paul’s successful building project and wanted a year-round greenhouse, too. And in 1997, Essex Greenhouses was born. Paul officially launched his business as more of side project, since he was already earning his living as a fulltime materials engineer.

Well, nearly two decades later, Paul’s greenhouse business is thriving. Today, he sells his greenhouse kits throughout the United States and Canada. Customers from the surrounding community have purchased kits from Essex Greenhouses—and, so have distant native tribes from lands further north. Paul says the Internet has helped his business grow. “I have tried local garden shows, but Essex Greenhouses has grown primarily through modern technology. It is now the main way I conduct business.”

Paul’s greenhouses are truly built to stand up to the toughest weather conditions—including winds of up to 70 miles per hour and snow loads of 23 pounds per square foot. Each greenhouse kit is built using a quality aluminum frame, stainless steel “T” bolts, and stainless steel captive nuts to prevent the unit from coming apart due to vibrations from the weather and other anomalies. Finally, Paul’s models incorporate 6-millimeter shatter-resistant, twin-wall polycarbonate, set on 24-inch centers. The engineer proudly tells the story of how one of his greenhouses held up in dangerous weather. “I received a phone from a customer in Chattanooga, Tennessee,” he says. “During a tornado, my customer’s greenhouse was picked up by strong winds and was carried away to his neighbor’s yard.

“After the storm died down, my client went over to the neighbor’s property, dragged the greenhouse off the yard, then called me. He needed a few new bolts, and the aluminum frame had to be reglazed. “My client put the greenhouse back together, placed it back in his yard, and put plants in it. It is still there today.” Paul designs his units in his shop on the south side of Bluffton. While he provides customized units to clients, he typically sells three basic models. The original model, the Devon, is built with both the beginner and the serious gardener in mind. It comes with several options, including sliding doors, a bench kit, or a screen door. The Milford was designed as an intermediate greenhouse, especially for those who desire to have more control over the growing environment; it’s ideal for the orchid lover. Essex Greenhouses offers the Milford unit in both eight and ten feet widths. The Lincoln, a home-attached version, is Essex Greenhouses’ most popular model. It can serve as a greenhouse, a patio or a sunroom. This leanto has an internal wall, which allows room for the best of two worlds—a hot tub at one end, and potting benches at the other. Essex Greenhouses kits include a fan, vent and thermostat. Paul recommends creating a foundation of 4 x 6 timbers set in the ground. If

Yvonne Marie’s Antique Mall
A Retail Road Less Traveled Article by Beth Steury
ntique malls were a novel idea nearly 27 years ago when Sam and Yvonne Marie Gilbert opened their antique mall on 2nd Street in Decatur, Indiana. “A lot of people had never heard of the concept,” remembers Yvonne Marie. “There was one in Fort Wayne, but most people weren’t familiar with the idea.” Yvonne Marie recalls, “My husband and I had gone on a trip to Iowa, where saw a sign advertising an antique mall. We have to see that, we thought. So, we headed off the beaten path.” The Gilberts were quite taken with the idea and decided, “That’s what Decatur needs.” Yvonne Marie says she and Sam agreed, “When we retire, we will buy a building and do that.”
Laughing, she adds, “Well, a building became available way before retirement.” The Gilberts purchased the former Sheets Furniture building that included four store fronts along the street in downtown Decatur. Doubts arose following the purchase of the huge three-story building. “We thought, What did we do?” “We didn’t have to do anything to the building, except rope off space for the vendors, and that was it. Sam said, ‘If we fill the first floor in the first year, we’ll be fine.’” But the Gilberts’ concern and moments of worry proved unnecessary. “When we opened, I filled up in six weeks. I had about 70 dealers then.

MOVING
OR DECLUTTERING?
“We were surprised that it took off so well. Word of mouth helped. We still have quite a few of our original dealers.” And so, the antique mall adventure began for Yvonne Marie, a part-time insurance agent for 20 years prior, and her husband, who had worked at Harvester and Fleetwood.

“I have over 50 dealers now,” Yvonne Marie says. “I’m pretty well full, at this time.” Only a small portion of the mall’s huge inventory currently belongs to Yvonne Marie. She and her daughter, Lori Fullenkamp, operate Yvonne Marie’s Antique Mall seven days a week. Lori’s daughter Jessica helps out, as well. “One of us is here every day, except Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day, and sometimes, Easter. We’re open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.” Many couples visit the mall together, Yvonne Marie says, but it’s also not unusual to see one or the other. “For women, it’s their day out. They % often meet friends at the mall.

The selection of inventory across the 50 vendors is quite extensive. “We sell pottery and crocks, as well as lot of Fenton glassware. We have a lot of jewelry, that’s really a big seller, and we sell a lot of the older dolls. 40
“I’ve seen a change in what people buy,” says Yvonne Marie. “We’ve always been a big place to purchase furniture. “The biggest thing now is primitives. That’s what pickers want.” She defines “primitives” as old, beat-up pieces, unpainted and in their original condition. “We also sell a lot of architectural pieces. People purchase and put them together to make something else.
“Chalk-painted furniture is popular, and we also sell the chalk paint. Victorian beds and dressers are popular. We sell a lot of round oak tables—oak is big in Indiana.” Shoppers often come in looking for specific items. Some of the most sought-after pieces are oak tables, oak kitchen cupboards, buffets, and oak pressed-back chairs. “If we don’t have it, they come back later.” Tourists on an antique adventure throughout the state generally include Yvonne Marie’s mall. Shoppers from Ohio and Fort Wayne are quite common.

“After all these years, people come from all over. And, many come back every year. They make our shop a stop on their list. We’ve had shoppers from China and Japan, and they made purchases.” Much of Yvonne Marie’s interest in antiques stems from her name— she is named after two of the famous Dionne quintuplets. “When I was born, they were front page news,” she explains. “They were a miracle—it had never happened before. “So, my mom named me after two of them, Yvonne and Marie. I’m surprised she didn’t give me all five names—they did that in those days.” Yvonne Marie began collecting Dionne quintuplet memorabilia in 1975. “I probably have one of the largest collections,” she confesses. “I have 10 sets of the Dionne dolls. “They have to be made by Madame Alexander and marked accordingly, to be legitimate.” The dolls were created in the likeness of the quintuplets at various ages. “I love antiques,” Yvonne Marie admits. “My house is full of them.” She has a large collection of magazines, two special edition
radios, spoons, lots of postcards, and pictures. “I think I have everything. It would be very rare to come across something I don’t have.” While a few items are on display at the store, most of her collection is housed in her home. Yvonne Marie is active in the Decatur Main Street association and participates in local retail promotions. She hosted an auction to raise funds for Storybook Park and is enthusiastic about efforts to raise money toward the purchase of a new sculpture for Founder’s Park. Regarding her second career, Yvonne Marie says, “It’s been fun. I’ve been here a long time, and I don’t plan to retire—ever. I enjoy it. It keeps me going. It’s like home. “There have been lots of nice people, lots of nice customers, lots of good dealers, over the years. I attribute my success to the good dealers and my good customers. They’ve become like family.”
