BROADCASTING A MESSAGE OF HOPE WBCL RADIO
F
orty years ago, the leadership of Fort Wayne Bible College decided to establish a public radio station for the purposes of encouraging and informing listeners from a Christian standpoint. What began with two full-time employees and a parttime staff has grown to become one of the most influential and beloved non-profit organizations in the region today. Early on, WBCL broadcast approximately 18 hours a day— and, because Fort Wayne had no other public radio station at the time, some of the titles played each day were classical music selections. “There were also Christian teaching programs,” adds WBCL’s Executive Director, Ross McCampbell. In fact, the station’s call letters “BCL” stand for “broadcasting Christ’s love.” Those who listened to WBCL in its

early years remember the morning show DJ, Jeff Carlson, with much fondness. Ross says, “He was extremely popular. For many years, Jeff and our previous longtime executive director, Char Binkley, recorded a humorous ten-minute segment called ‘What’s Cookin’ that was a listener favorite.” In fact, when Jeff was killed in an automobile accident in December 1995, the station’s deep loss was shared by its listeners. “The viewing and funeral service was held at one of the largest churches in town,” Ross recalls, “and it was packed with a capacity crowd of over 1,500.” Despite the tragic loss, Ross says the experience awakened a new understanding for him. “Our staff was included with Jeff’s family in the receiving line prior to the service. At first, I found that strange, but as our listeners came NOVEMBER 2016 | wabashvalleyliving.com | 5

through the line and told us not only what Jeff meant to them, but what we all meant to them and how deeply WBCL touched their lives, I was shaken to the core. “What I had previously considered a ‘fun’ job became a serious calling to ministry and an understanding of the responsibility I had to walk alongside our listeners in their faith.” Ten years after the station was established, WBCL was named “Station of the Year” by the National Religious Broadcasters association. The station had grown tremendously as the community became aware of its presence. While the original broadcast covered Fort Wayne and
communities nearby, WBCL’s signal is now transmitted in neighboring states, making its contemporary Christian music and other programming accessible to a wide audience. In 1992, the station added a tower and transmitter in Archbold, Ohio. Another tower was added in Spencerville, Ohio in 1997. Translators were put into place in Muncie, Indiana (1997) and Adrian, Michigan (2005), further expanding WBCL’s coverage. In 2008, WBCL added another station near Coldwater, Michigan, which reaches west to Three Rivers, Michigan and allows listeners to tune into WBCL across northernmost parts of Indiana.

And, finally, WBCL’s website, launched in the 1990s, began offering a digital broadcast. Today, the radio station reaches around the globe—at least, wherever a listener is able to log onto wbcl.org or open a listening app. The most amazing part of WBCL’s growth since its inception in January 1976 is the fact that the station is dependent on the financial support of its listeners. WBCL operated on a $65,000 annual budget in 1976. But, with the expansions made over the years, expenses have gone up considerably. Fortunately, so has the generosity of WBCL listeners. Early in 2016, listeners exceeded the budget amount set for the year, pledging nearly $1.8 million in support to the station. “The bulk of our funding comes from Share—an annual on-air fundraiser held the last week of January,” Ross explains, “but
other means of support come through Business Underwriting opportunities and Day Sponsors. Day Sponsors underwrite an entire day or a portion of it via a recorded announcement to honor someone or to highlight a milestone in their lives.” WBCL is governed by a “separately incorporated organization and overseeing board, known as Taylor University Broadcasting Inc.” The broadcasting license first held by Fort Wayne Bible College (later Summit Christian College) was transferred to Taylor University when it merged with the smaller Fort Wayne college in the early 1990s. “Our governing board keeps us on mission and helps us with policies and strategic planning,” Ross adds. “When it comes to the daily operational decisions of running this organization, of course, the responsibility lies with the executive director.”

Before taking a job at WBCL in 1990, Ross worked at other radio stations. He also served in positions of leadership. “Around six years ago, I was starting to feel like I should be using those leadership skills again to give back and to serve, but I wasn’t exactly sure where to do that. “Then, the executive director position came open here, and after a lot of prayer, I went for it. Our board did a national search and somehow,

team of hard-working and creative people with a mix of personalities, so if I can get them all to head in the same direction at mostly the same time, I’m rather happy. “This is going to sound cliché, but the best thing about working here is the team. These are the kind of people I believe anyone would want to hang around with, and I get to do that every day. They have such love and devotion for each other and for what we do here that is highly contagious.” WBCL operates with 16 fulltime employees and several part-time staff members. “Our turnover rate is practically non-existent,” Ross reports. “I’ve been here over 26 years, and there are 5 people who have been here longer than me! “There is a deep family feel here. Kids and spouses of staff pop into the station and volunteer at events, so over the years, you get to know each others’ families, too.

Wert County Fairgrounds. Later plays were produced at the old Lincoln Audition on Crawford Street and at the old Elks building, until the group was able to purchase their own stage.
Back in the late 1950s, a small group of people interested in the theatrical arts got together and decided to form a community theatre group. Their goal was straightforward: to offer quality theatrical productions in the Van Wert area, utilizing local performers, directors, musicians and technical people.
Fifty-eight years later, Van Wert Civic Theatre is a going concern, offering five to seven productions each season. The regular season begins in September and runs through May, during which five productions (usually three plays and two musicals) are presented. The extended season continues through the summer with two productions for younger thespians (usually, a musical and a play).
They didn't have much to start with, not even their own performance space. Despite that, the group persevered and put together their first performance. That first production was performed on the stage at the Junior Fair Building at the Van

audience seating. In front of the former altar, performers now regularly draw spectators into the magical world of theatre. The working backbone of Van Wert Civic Theatre is now well into its third generation, with the fourth standing "in the wings," waiting for their chance to step into leadership. Chad Kraner, current president of the theatre board, is himself one of the later generations.

He is also in charge of drama at Lincolnview, which currently presents its productions on the Van Wert Civic Theatre stage. "What's exciting to me is to see some of the kids who originally performed in youth theatre during their elementary and high school years return to be a part of the adult shows at Van Wert Civic Theatre," says Chad. The Van Wert Civic Theatre is currently undergoing a facelift— fresh paint on walls, especially in the makeup and costume areas, and new lighting in the lower lobby. "Since we are a non-profit organization, we rely on fundraising and arts grants to help us finance these improvements," Chad says. "The Van Wert area has been very generous in helping us with some very big updates and repairs to the building over the years."

More repairs and updates are on the horizon, as Van Wert Civic Theatre works to keep the building not only presentable and safe for the audience, but also to create a real attraction here in Van Wert. "Our audience base reaches as far away as Fort Wayne, Sidney, Toledo, Bowling Green, and Ada," Chad explains. "We will continue to work at creating a beautiful destination for our loyal patrons." The most interesting part of these productions is that they are nearly completely volunteer-run. "What keeps this theatre running is our volunteer base," says Chad. "It always amazes people that we have no paid staff. We are truly self-sufficient, with volunteers doing everything, from performing on stage to cleaning the building." Volunteers have run the theatre for over 50 years, and the board is always looking for more people to add their talents to the backbone of dedicated members who have supported the productions here for decades. "Without our volunteers, there would be no Van Wert Civic Theatre," Chad adds. 16
"Anyone is qualified to work at the theatre. We do all the dayto-day work ourselves—mowing grass, sweeping floors, and so on. Every production needs backstage people to make it work—set builders, lighting and sound technicians, costumers. “We even have volunteer ticket sellers and ushers. Any and all interested people are welcome in our family!" One of the biggest continuing efforts for Van Wert Civic Theatre is getting more young people involved in the life of the theatre. "We are exploring the possibility of adding a summer show involving older high school and collegeage kids home for the summer, especially those kids who have performed here and in the local high schools," adds Chad. "We want to keep the kids as part of our theatre family. We're very lucky here in Van Wert to have had the opportunity to participate in quality theatre. The younger generation will be a vital part of local theatre for years to come."
Van Wert Civic Theatre is well known throughout Ohio and a five-state region (Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin) through its participation in the Ohio Community Theatre Association (OCTA) and the American Association of Community Theatre (AACT). The lower lobby of the theatre is full of awards and commendations earned over the years by productions at Van Wert Civic Theatre. "It's our job as the theatre board and members to see that we keep the fire of performance lit for the next generation, and the one after that, and so on," Chad says. "I am continually amazed at the level of talent here in the Van Wert area. If you've never seen a show here, you owe it to yourself to come out and enjoy a level of theatre that will amaze you!" The next production is Miracle on 34th Street, which runs December 1st through 11th. Reserve tickets starting November 28 by calling the box office between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. any afternoon until the end of the run. FOR THE LEAST OF THESE LOVING SHEPHERD MINISTRIES

hen Wells County resident Ed Schwartz visited Haiti in 1985, he was struck by the number of orphaned, abused, and exploited children he encountered there. The experience further opened his eyes to the plight of at-risk children around the world. Hoping to recruit others in helping the world’s most vulnerable children, Ed founded Loving Shepherd Ministries (LSM) in Bluffton, Indiana in 2002. “It was going to be vital to empower people to be involved in making a difference for those kids,” he explains. “I was excited to see the dual mission of helping kids and, at the same time, connecting people to missions, ministry and Kingdom work.” “In the beginning,” says Amber Steffen, marketing director at

Loving Shepherd Ministries, “LSM had a simple goal—to provide free, objective resources for families looking into the overwhelming adoption journey. While we still do this today, the vision is much bigger. “We go deep into the countries we serve and seek to provide ways for the local church to actively invest in the most vulnerable around them.” Loving Shepherd Ministries’ team includes a staff of 14 in the United States and 169 overseas workers in Haiti and Ethiopia. LSM offers a “completely unique continuum of care” that sees an at-risk child through to adulthood. The organization expounds upon a statement—“A vulnerable child needs a permanent family and tools for their future to reach their full potential and transform their culture for Christ”—to briefly explain its purposes. “The poorest country in the Western Hemisphere was plunged into even deeper, more widespread poverty after the massive 2010 earthquake,” informs Amber, “leaving more than 220,000 dead. More than a million people became homeless, and thousands of children were orphaned overnight. And in recent days, Hurricane Matthew has brought even more destruction to Haiti.” Prior to 2010, children in Haiti were already at-risk because of extreme poverty across the nation. Today, as many as 300,000 Haitian children suffer daily abuse and neglect, due to a form of child slavery that is common practice there. Loving Shepherd Ministries works alongside churches in Haiti to place these vulnerable children permanently, with Christian families. The program, called Homes of Hope, provides for basic needs, an education, vocational training and future business opportunities after completing school. LSM also connects donors with these homes through ongoing sponsorship opportunities. As LSM changes the lives of the current generation, the organization hopes to influence the culture, as well. Amber explains, “As these children grow into Godly leaders, nurturing parents, deeply committed businessmen and church members in their own communities, they will be able to affect positive change in

the next generation as living, breathing examples of a new Haiti. “It is here that our success happens—when we see generational change rippling and spreading throughout a country in desperate need of hope.”
Ethiopia
Poverty is a way of life in Ethiopia, as well. Young women, suffering from hunger, leave their homes and relocate to Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, expecting better opportunities. But, Amber says, these women “find an equally harsh life ahead,” selling vegetables on the street

often, even those trapped in the U.S. foster care system are at arm’s length from our dayto-day lives. “We are busy—and insulated from most of the outside world’s problems. But, we believe the American church is uniquely positioned to make a tangible difference in these children’s lives, one opportunity at a time.” Adoption is one way to make a difference. Although LSM is not an adoption agency, the organization aims to assist families at the beginning stages of international or domestic adoption. “We are totally unique because our services are at no cost to families, and we receive no compensation from adoption agencies. This allows us to be an objective resource, and with over 20 years of combined experience, our adoption team is uniquely qualified to help.”

As a 501c3 non-profit organization, Loving Shepherd Ministries is funded entirely by donations. “We rely on passionate men and women who want to affect long-term generational change,” Amber says. LSM also seeks those who will commit to praying for the ministry. Though the task is formidable, Ed Schwartz and the Loving Shepherd Ministries staff find their work rewarding. “Recently,” he tells, “one of our Haitian staff said, ‘I just wanted to say thank-you for 30
giving me a chance to help my country, my people and these children. I thank God for this privilege.’ “Another man on our staff told me, ‘Most people in Haiti do not have any work they can do. Most of those that do work only have a job. But, God has given me an opportunity to work for Him and these children. This is much more than a job. It is my ministry.’” Ed adds, “I can’t think of another job in the entire world that could be more fulfilling. On a day-to-day basis, I see former orphans, vulnerable children, child slaves and exploited kids being given hope, happiness, the Gospel and, of course, a new, permanent family. “The greatest fulfillment I have as President of LSM is watching God bring highly-passionate, focused and gifted people to His work of helping vulnerable children. My heart breaks for the last, least, lost and lonely children of the world, and the fulfillment that comes in seeing others joining the mission is incredible.”

EDUCATION TO FIT THE STUDENT THE CROSSING
I
n its fifth year of serving the community and currently housed in the former Dollar General building in downtown Berne, Indiana, The Crossing is making a difference in the lives of area youth. “The Crossing is about helping students who have struggled in previous educational settings to succeed academically,” shares Amanda Gootjes, regional coordinator of the Berne campus. A native of Michigan, she graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2013. As a fully accredited, stand-alone high school, the Berne campus is part of an ever-expanding, national network, with 25 satellite locations in Indiana and one in Michigan.

The Crossing was founded in Elkhart, Indiana by Rob Staley, an educator at Concord High School. When The Crossing first established a classroom in Berne in 2011, staff and students reported to a local church for school each day. “It was a huge blessing to us to use the Grace Bible Church facilities,” Amanda says. The Crossing’s current location became available at a time when the school needed more space for its growing student body. South Adams Schools was instrumental in bringing The Crossing to the southern Adams County community. “There was a need for students who were consistently not successful in the traditional educational setting to have a non-traditional setting,” recalls South Adams High School

Principal Trent Lehman. “The Crossing provides a different setting for these students, helping them be more successful than they had been in a traditional setting. “It’s a win-win situation for the students in that they get the individual attention they need with a self-paced, online curriculum. The Crossing can provide a more laid-back, family-like atmosphere, with 30 to 40 students, that is hard to duplicate with 400 students.” “We have a great relationship with South Adams High School,” says Amanda.

“They send us students they feel would benefit from our services. “When asked why he or she would like to attend The Crossing, many students state the desire for a chance to do better academically. Once they become familiar with who we are and what we do, they appreciate the opportunity and work hard to earn the credits needed to graduate.” As the “sending” or referral school for many of The Crossing’s students in Berne, South Adams Schools funds the tuition for those students to attend the non-traditional program.

The family-like atmosphere Lehman spoke of goes beyond the walls of the school building in the form of retreats, camping trips, and other off-campus ventures, such as hanging out with staff members. Amanda sums it up well. “We do life together.” 34

Currently, 43 students are enrolled at The Crossing in Berne. “We always have room for more.” The organization’s mission statement outlines their unique approach to secondary education:
Empowering struggling students to become contributing members of their communities through academics, job training and faith-based character education. Amanda explains, “The faith-based mentoring is a huge part of what we do. We start each day with family time, which is basically a safe place to talk about things.”
As the students get comfy on couches arranged in a rectangle opposite the computer end of the facility’s space, the topics of discussion are influenced by current events and real-world issues, along with concerns weighing heavy on the hearts and minds of the students. Prayer is also a part of this routine start to each day. A weekly “God Talk” session offers the opportunity to explore spiritual matters more deeply. The job training aspect of the school’s mission is fulfilled in a number of ways. Some of the students attend vocational classes at South Adams High School. Others are involved in the school’s

candle business, making and marketing the candles, as well as selling and tracking sales. “We would love to have businesses take an interest in offering students internships,” Amanda adds. The Crossing could then provide additional vocational opportunities. The academic portion of The Crossing’s mission is met through a variety of means. “When people think of online classes, they assume students are working completely on their own. But, we are there to help them all along the way.” The school uses the online curriculum Plato. Students view tutorials and take notes. Each lesson requires the student to pass a mastery test before moving on to the next lesson. At the completion of the unit, a post test is taken. A final exam is required at the end of the semester. While much of the students’ work is done online, there are one-on-one classes on topics such as leadership or personal finance, as well as remediation courses to help students in passing state required tests, taught by the school’s three teachers: Amanda, Darren Kloepper and Kyla Smith. Weekly meetings with the students monitor their individual progress. “We provide support to help the students meet the goals they set.” Upon graduation, the students receive a diploma from South Adams High School or one from The Crossing, depending

on the student’s particular situation. Regional graduation ceremonies are held in numerous places across the state. The Berne campus participates in the Fort Wayne ceremony. The community has welcomed The Crossing with open arms. Every Friday, local groups or individuals provide a meal for the students. “That shows our students that people care.” Several from the community also volunteer to tutor students.

A THANK-YOU FOR THOSE WHO SERVE LOTS FOR SOLDIERS
•
HOLLY WUEBKER

hen it comes time to retire, many people think of purchasing vacation homes, spending time with family, and taking up other leisurely pursuits after working hard for so many years. For Homer and Carol Burnett, though, it was an entirely different scenario. Homer retired in 2013, and within a week, the couple had decided they weren’t done working. The Burnetts wanted to serve their community—“God expected us to do something,” says Carol. And, that’s exactly what they did.
Homer and Carol began looking at foreclosed homes for sale in the area. In January 2014, the Burnetts founded Lots for Soldiers, an organization giving former and current members of any United States Armed Forces branch an opportunity to purchase a home at a highly discounted price. “Saying ‘thank-you’ is fine,” Carol explains, “but, it’s not enough.” The Burnetts are familiar with the sacrifices made by those in the armed forces. Homer has a military background, and some of their children have served in the military. Carol and Homer wished to offer other soldiers something in return—to say “thank-you” in a bigger, more tangible way.

The couple filed a 501c3 to form the organization as a non-profit for tax purposes—a designation which can take up to three years to obtain. Amazingly, though, the Burnetts were able to complete the paperwork and have everything established in just over four months. The initial goal was to have residential lots donated, and then build homes at a reduced cost for the military members. The plan expanded to purchasing multiple lots with donated funds—resulting in a plethora of opportunities for military members to purchase homes they, perhaps, could otherwise not afford. When Homer and Carol placed sealed bids on the first two properties in Celina, Ohio, they were the high bidders at just $500. That small amount was enough to obtain the two properties—and, begin building on the first for the initial deserving military member. In 2014, the first house built by Lots for Soldiers was completed in just about six months. This was possible with the donations of time, materials and volunteers, especially from neighboring organization St. John’s Builders, which assisted in much of the site construction. The first home was appraised upon completion, and what would typically cost around $125,000 to build had been constructed for approximately $54,000— making the home available to the military member at a fraction of the normal cost. 40
There were over 216 businesses, volunteers, and companies that aided in the construction of that first home in Celina. Gas stations provided ice and water for the volunteers, individuals brought meals and food for the workers, and companies provided materials and labor that was either discounted or donated. Thanks to Our Yanks of Coldwater, Ohio also assisted with donations of supplies and appliances for
the first home. The organization continues to work with Lots for Soldiers, as the two groups share a common goal of supporting those men and women who have made sacrifices for the sake of freedom. Each Lots for Soldiers house is custom and unique, including the one the organization just recently broke ground on in Rockford, Ohio. The initial step is purchasing the lot, which the organization does by raising funds and then

obtaining the property at a discounted price. Next, a committee and volunteers step forward to find a contractor who will discount or donate the labor, as well as a variety of suppliers that will reduce the cost of or donate materials and supplies for the project. The aim is to have the house completed at around 60% or less of the standard cost of building the home. This all varies, depending on lot price, number of volunteers and assisting businesses, and size of the home that is needed for the family chosen. Families that are interested in purchasing a Lots for Soldiers home fill out applications, which are available online, to explain the need or desire or why they are interested. Then, depending on where lots are available, a separate committee is established for each specific home to select the family that will live there. This is no easy feat, with the number of applications from deserving military members. And so, the organization continues to seek lots that may be donated or purchased for discounted prices. Fortunately for the service members who apply, the list of addresses where future Lots for Soldiers homes will be built continues to grow. Celina, Rockford, Spencerville and St. Marys are just of few of the towns where lots are currently being added to this list. When a family’s specifications don’t fit a particular lot, they are considered for future lots. Lots for Soldiers does not remove an applicant from active files until they have been placed for a 42
home. There is no specific age range, either—an applicant may be someone who has recently completed their first tour of duty or a veteran who has been retired from the military for many years. An exciting step for the Burnetts and for the organization as a whole is the upcoming establishment of an office in Celina. This will provide a site where applicants may drop off paperwork, rather than mailing it, and make meeting space available for applicants and committee members. As the organization continues to grow and thrive, the office will serve as the central meeting point for future Lots for Soldiers efforts. Whether it’s a volunteer sweeping floors, a cook providing lunches, or a business donating the lumber, there are many opportunities for getting involved and giving back to members of the armed services through Lots for Soldiers. One couple’s retirement has turned into something that no one would ever have expected, and many are thankful today for the Burnett’s contributions. To invite Carol, Homer or another committee member speak at an upcoming event, please contact them by phone or mail. Check their website or Facebook page to learn more about the organization. Donations of funding, labor or materials are greatly appreciated.
