Balyeat’s Coffee Shop:
New Life for A Downtown Favorite Article by Dee Fisher
A
gray pall settled over the Van Wert community last fall as conversations inevitably turned to one particular topic: the coming sale of Balyeat’s Coffee Shop. It’s not likely that many Van Wert residents remember a time when Balyeat’s wasn’t in operation next to the courthouse, the large red and blue neon sign (reportedly the first neon sign in the city) blinking above the entrance. Balyeat’s had served as an icon not only in Van Wert, but around the state and even the region. The question on most minds,
of course, was what would happen to the restaurant once it was sold. Owner Dale Davies and his wife Marcia had both reached a rather mature age, and it was time for them to move on and enjoy their autumn years. But, what would become of the long-standing eatery once they were gone? Don Balyeat purchased the downtown restaurant in 1924 when it was called The Lincoln Way, since it is situated on the Lincoln Highway. Don changed its name to his own,

and he continued running the business through the Great Depression and World War II. Dale Davies had worked for the Balyeats when he was teenager—more than 50 years ago. He purchased the restaurant in 1964, and he and his staff fed their customers good homestyle cooking into the 21st century. Little changed there in the more than 50 years since Dale signed the deed. Many customers can recall eating there as children and teenagers, and then bringing their own families to the brick-front diner for Sunday dinners. And, the pending sale of the historic site had Van Wert residents troubled. Did the auction signal the end of an era? The sale was held on November 23, 2015, and, after about 40 minutes, the winning bidder, Anita Miller, shook hands and hugged a smiling Dale Davies. After the sale, he was quoted, “I feel great! I’m done working.”
On the other hand, Anita Miller, a native and resident of Monroe, Indiana, felt differently. “I was overwhelmed,” she admits. A few weeks previous, Anita had come to the open house and then had left town on

“The signs came with the building, and, as the name hasn’t changed, neither will they,” Anita smiles. “I will even leave Dale’s name on them.”

And, changes have been small and slow in coming. The register desk was moved to its original location opposite the front door. In the past weeks, all the stools at the counter have been recovered. And, most recently, the old gas-powered coffee maker was replaced with a new Bunn unit.

When Balyeat’s reopened shortly after Thanksgiving, Dale stayed on with Anita for about a month. “He taught me as much as he could about cooking in a restaurant and ordering food and other supplies. I wanted the place to run much as it had been going. I know what I can change and what I can’t.”

At an age when most have already retired, Anita had specific reasons for taking on another business. “I really don’t want to be like Dale in that way,” she says. “He continued working into his eighties, but I won’t.

One of Anita’s biggest priorities is to draw in younger clientele. “We have many, many ‘regulars’ who have eaten here for decades. We love them and, of course, appreciate their business! But, we have to look forward into the coming years when some of them will no longer be able to get here to eat lunch or dinner.” With that in mind, Anita has been hiring younger workers (some of them her grandchildren) on the premise that their friends will come to see them at the restaurant. “My granddaughter has begun baking pies for us, and we’ve been able to hire other young people to wait on our customers. Hopefully,

they’ll help draw in new ‘regulars’ who’ll continue to patronize us, just like their parents and grandparents did.” Other plans include expansion of Balyeat’s services. The staff will be catering a dinner theatre for Van Wert’s Off Stage Productions in April, and there are already plans for incoming bus tours in the summer and catering for events at Niswonger Performing Arts Center. “And, we’ll be replacing the old wall menu with smaller table menus,” Anita reports. “There’s also work on a state grant for improving the brick front of the building.”

When asked about the out-of-state clientele the restaurant has seen over the years, Anita smiles. “If I had a nickel for everyone who tells me they stop at Balyeat’s every time they come through Van Wert, I’d be independently wealthy! “But, seriously, it happens all the time. When the place was up for sale, I understand that many of these people were upset at the thought of Balyeat’s disappearing forever. “Well, they can be assured that Balyeat’s is here to stay.” Balyeat’s Coffee Shop is open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays.

Fisher Meats:
Neighborhood Brand Now at Grocery Chains Article by Jim Kirkwood

amily-owned and operated, Fisher Meats has a long history in the area beginning in the late 1800s. Around that time, the story goes, Albert Fisher had a butcher shop in Salamonia, Indiana, and Frank Fisher had a shop in New Corydon. Greg Fisher, one of four brothers operating the family business, shares more recent history. “My grandfather, Leon Fisher, was a soldier in World War II. The family had the Clover Farm Market store here in Portland, Indiana, but when Grandpa came back from the war in 1945, he purchased a property on Walnut Street—our present location.
“At that time, it was a milk house on the edge of Portland. Grandpa turned it into a slaughterhouse. Back then, everybody had a few head of animals, and they would bring them in to be slaughtered.” The tradition of hard work has prevailed through the generations. Greg has an interesting photo of his Great-uncle Joe. Surrounded by pig carcasses, Joe is splitting one with a cleaver, surely a job requiring a lot of physical strength and stamina. Greg says admiringly, “He worked until he was 92 years old. Way past retirement age,

he would come in when we were breaking down the animal and would wash carcasses and break down bellies, loins, and ribs. “He always said, ‘What else am I going to do? Sit in a chair?’” A s t h e b u sin e s s a n d the family continued to grow, the grandchildren, including Greg, took their turns working and learning. “I started working while growing up. If you lived in the house, you worked—just like a growing up in a farm family.” Greg, his older brother Michael, and his t wo younger brothers, Brad and Dan, along with sisters, Krista, Jaime, and Emily, were expected to help out when they were of age. “We started in cleanup, or sanitation. “When we got older, we started working the kill floor.” From there, they quickly became skilled in making sausage and cutting meat. “That was the first full-time job I had,” says Greg, who now manages the Fisher Meats
shop in Muncie, which opened in 2009. He adds with a wry grin, “I didn’t get out of sanitation, however.” Fisher Meats lives up to its slogan of “Neighborhood Butcher with World-Class Quality.” Their stated goal is “to provide the freshest, highest quality meats available.”
Their retail stores in Portland and Muncie offer a remarkable variety of meat cuts and sausages. Fisher Meats is widely known in the area. Pointing to the colored pushpins on a wall map, Greg says, “Those are all the independent locations we are in, and we have since picked up 63 Marsh locations. We are in about 105 grocery stores now, mostly in Muncie, Anderson, Fishers, and a couple stores in Ohio.”

In 2009, Fisher Meats opened its retail store in Muncie. Greg reports, “Everything is made, manufactured and processed in Portland and brought here to Muncie. “We used to slaughter about 40 head per week,” says Greg, “but as we started growing into new markets and increasing our products, logistically, we ran out of space.” To ensure a wide supply of different products, Fisher Meats now buys sections of beef and pork from processors. The Portland operation still does quite a bit of custom slaughtering and butchering, including deer during the season. Fisher Meats slaughters about 15 to 18 head of cattle every Thursday morning and 20 to 25 hogs every Monday morning. “A lot of times, when people realize that we start from the animal to the product, they have lots of questions,” says Greg. “Questions about how manufacturing is done, what really goes into a hot dog, and so on.”

First, they feed hickory wood chips into a heater inside a large smoker, which slowly begins to create heavy smoke. Now indistinguishable from each other in white coats and headgear, Dan or Brad or Mike, opens a gate to allow the smoke into the oven, where the sausages will soon be loaded. As the room begins to grow hazy, one of the brothers carefully positions me near the outer door of the room. A minute or two later, Dan suddenly opens the smoker, and a large, thick

cloud of wood smoke charges into the room. The men watch me for a reaction before pushing me from the room, and I fight the urge to cough. The four of them laugh, as do the curious workers making sausage in the larger room, while I wipe my burning eyes. I smell like smoked sausage the rest of the day. The Fisher family has gained a good deal of knowledge and skill from experts in Germany and other European countries. In February, Greg traveled to Penn State to learn from a sausage maker who was brought in from Italy for a week-long workshop. At the 2016 IFFA Quality Competition, held in Januar y by the leading international meat industry trade fair, Fisher Meats brought home seven medals. Judges from the German Butchers’ Association awarded them gold medals in the categories of bonein ham, boneless ham, hot dogs, snack sticks, Braunschweiger, and summer sausage, along with a silver medal in the Bologna category. As you gaze at the large variety of meats in their well-lit display counters, you might start your shopping with at least one or two of those products.

Chicotes Mexican Grill:
Authentic Mexican with Fresh Ingredients Article by Beth Steury
J
uan Contreras, who came to this country from Mexico fourteen years ago, can rightfully boast that when it comes to culinary experience, he’s done it all. “I started as a dishwasher at 17,” he shares. “I also cooked, then moved on to clearing tables and serving. Then, I ran the business for someone else before finally opening my own restaurant.” Juan and his wife Rebecca opened Chicotes Mexican Grill in Decatur, Indiana in November of 2013. After adding their own decorative touches to the leased property, they embarked on their restaurant adventure.
Juan and Rebecca met in Bluffton when Rebecca was a customer at the restaurant where Juan was working. This summer, they will celebrate their seventh anniversary. Rebecca, a native of Bluffton who is employed at Bluffton-Regional Medical Center as a nurse, pitches in at the restaurant as needed. Her parents, Michael and Jane Lampman, help out, as well, at the cash register and with miscellaneous maintenance. While he was growing up, Juan cooked at home a lot. He brought his own recipes to the establishment, and while he’s adept at preparing food, he enjoys getting out of the hot kitchen to mingle with his customers.

He sometime manages the restaurant’s bar, but what he enjoys most is greeting his customers. “My job is more to talk to the customer, make sure they’re happy and enjoying their food, because that’s my goal.” He’s pleased at the loyal, and growing, customer base the restaurant has built in the past two-and-a-half years. Lunch and dinner are served at Chicotes Tuesday through Sunday. Big screen TVs draw sports fans to watch the game while enjoying an impressive selection of Mexican soups, salads, appetizers, dips and entrees, including burritos, enchiladas, quesadillas, combos, seaside HAVE COOK specialty LIKE YOU DON’T and House favorites, as well as vegetarian selections and “light choices.”

Breakfast, served from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays only, consists of an extensive menu featuring both traditional American fare, as well as several Mexican dishes. Egg Beaters® may be substituted in any dish for a small charge. A kids’ menu suited to the likes of youngsters 12 and under is also available. For several months in 2015, Chicotes served breakfast Fridays through Sundays, a feature that may be offered again at some point in the future. Juan updates Chicotes’ menu about once a year to “spice” things up—to give his clientele something new to try. Expect to see new tempting dishes early this coming summer.

Customer service is a top priority to Juan. “I have very loyal customers. I know most of my customers. Many come in regularly, so I see the same people every week, and I know their names.” If Juan isn’t greeting Chicotes’ guests at the door or at the register, his customers notice. “If I’m not around, if I’m in my office or in the kitchen, people say, ‘Where’s Juan?’ “If I’m cooking on a Friday night, they come into the kitchen to find me,” Juan shares with a chuckle. He loves introducing his restaurant to new customers, whether they are locals or folks just passing through, but Juan is quick to share how much he appreciates his loyal, repeat patrons.

The Corner Depot:
Food Service That’s All in the Family Article by Amy M. Orr
J
ust before the turn of a new century, the State of Indiana announced its plan to widen U.S. Highway 27 in Adams County. Crews would expand the existing surface into a four-lane, divided roadway outside of Decatur, Indiana. The project would end just south of State Road 124 at Monroe. While the DOT project may have improved the flow of traffic, the development came at the expense of a business located at the intersection of U.S. 27 and SR 124. Familyowned and operated Coppess Corner Express, a popular eatery, was demolished to allow for major changes at the intersection. But, the destruction of an Adams County
building brought new life to a vacant building in Wells County. This building, says Barb Schwartz, had been “empty for several years.” Following the forced closure of Coppess Corner Express in Monroe, she adds, “We started thinking about opening The Corner Depot” in Bluffton. In late 1999, Barb and her family purchased a former restaurant near the intersection of State Road 116 and Highway 1. The Corner Depot opened for dining in the spring of 2000. Barb was just 15 years old when she got her start in the food industry at another

area landmark—The Dutch Mill Restaurant in Bluffton. “I’ve been in the food service business since then,” she says. “It just gets in your blood. I can’t imagine doing anything else.” In fact, considering the work history of Barb’s family, you might conclude that a career in food service is hereditary. “According to my mom, my grandma always wanted a restaurant. I remember watching her cook. “My mother was a cook until she retired at the age of 80. Must be in the genes.”

A blurb on the restaurant’s Facebook page calls the eater a “family-friendly, non-smoking, casual dining restaurant featuring home-made specials, freshbaked pies made from scratch like Grandma’s, and broasted chicken.” Barb attributes The Corner Depot’s success to many “special customers.” She adds, “If we’re busy, some will even help the servers get drinks or bus tables.”

The Corner Depot’s banquet room comfortably seats up to 45 guests. Several area organizations hold weekly or monthly meetings here, says Barb. “Some groups like the room so much that they book a year in advance.”

Not to worry—if your special event cannot relocate to The Corner Depot, you can still enjoy the restaurant’s home-cooking. Barb and her crew offer full-service catering. “We have a menu but will do anything the customer wants,” she assures. “We have made a variety of things, from hamburgers and fries to Chinese food, for different events. We love to please our customers with the foods they love.” In July 2005, Barb opened a second eatery just down the road. From the start, JBG’s main attraction was its fresh-made frozen custard, available in a variety of flavors.

“We came up with the name to honor my dad, who passed away in 1989,” Barb explains. “JBG’s stands for ‘Jelly Bean Grandpa.’ “At his funeral, one of my nieces commented that when we see a rainbow, that is Grandpa ‘throwing jelly beans from Heaven.’” Barb continues, “The first week we were open, there was a double rainbow. My son-in-law took a picture at JBG’s, and when it was developed, there was a rainbow on either side of our sign. I

JBG’s has concocted as many as 150 different flavors of frozen custard. For the discerning sweets lover, Barb says they aim to strike a balance between fruit and candy flavors.

For Barb, history seemed to repeat itself in recent months. “The State seems to follow us. Now, they are widening State Road 1.” While the roadwork won’t require demolition of the building, JBG’s sign would have to be removed. And, Barb adds, the highway will come “quite close to the building.” The family concluded it was time for a move. “We actually had been thinking about it for a while. Since we only leased the building, we felt this would be the time to move.” JBG’s relocated to The Corner Depot in December. Now, diners can enjoy a home-cooked meal and creamy, frozen custard in one sitting. Follow The Corner Depot on Facebook to see daily dining specials and frozen custard flavors. The restaurant is open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

The Old 27 Ice Cream Shop:
Making Life Sweeter Downtown Article by Beth Steury
W
hen Charlie Brune, owner of Complete Printing Service in Decatur, noticed Beaver’s Creamery—just two doors from his downtown print shop—was for sale in 2011, a vision began to take shape. “It wasn’t just the allure of the ice cream shop,” Charlie says. “It was the building. It’s from 1921, which is the same year that this print shop started.” Elberson’s Service Station occupied the property in the 1920s. Later, when the real estate was purchased by the Beavers family, the business name was changed to Beavers Oil.
Eventually, the family opened an ice cream shop there. While the historical facts intrigued Brune, a local history buff, the desire to purchase the property went much further than the historical appeal for both Charlie and his wife, Jean. “It was the right location, the right building— it just needed our touch,” Charlie recalls. The vision of what the ice cream shop could do and be for the community continued to take shape. “We knew it was the right thing to do. “We asked ourselves, What if we committed to this, hired high school and college kids and a manager, and got them to the point

where they could run it?” And, that’s exactly what transpired in the five years since. “It has been a really neat experience,” says Charlie. The shop’s name, The Old 27 Ice Cream Shop, commemorates the official U.S. 27 corridor that used to run through downtown Decatur on what is now known as 2nd Street . While this major, national thoroughfare used to run from Michigan to Miami, Florida, its northern leg now ends in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. The initial manager stayed through three seasons at The Old 27 Ice Cream Shop before moving to other employment. Now Charlie, along with a couple of submanagers, takes care of dayto-day operations. He does the ordering, while Jean does the scheduling. Beginning the first full weekend of May, the shop is open 3:30 to 9 p.m. weekdays, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays, and noon to 9 p.m. on Sundays. “As of Memorial Day, we’re open full-time every day through Labor Day,”
Charlie adds. Continuing through September and into the beginning of October, the hours reduce to evenings and weekends only. Charlie admits the extensive hours can be a challenge. But again, he says, it’s about what the establishment can do for the community.

The Old 27’s menu reads like an ice cream lover’s dream, with cones, sundaes, milkshakes and malts in your choice of either soft serve or hard dip. “Since we’re named The Old 27 Ice Cream Shop, we have 27 flavors of ice cream—a soft-serve vanilla, as well as chocolate and twist, and then 24 flavors of hard dip at all times.” Often, there are additional featured hard dip flavors. “For sure, the kids’ favorite is Superman,” Charlie says, smiling. “It’s strawberry red, lemon yellow and bubble gum blue—it mostly tastes like sugar. “With adults, Butter Pecan is pretty popular, as well as some of the specialty chocolate flavors.” Sorbettos, frozen yogurt, and sugar-free flavors are also available. The “River Greenway” is a special feature at The Old 27 Ice Cream Shop. This dish consists of hard dip vanilla yogurt, chocolate and mint syrup, pecans and a cherry, totaling about 300 calories—an amount that can be “walked off” in a four-mile stroll along Decatur’s scenic River Greenway. Other items on The Old 27’s menu include hot dogs, chili dogs, chilicheese dogs, sloppy joes, pulled pork, chicken salad, nachos, and walking tacos, as well as chips, apples, and bananas. Slush Puppies and Pepsi products round out the beverage selections. At the end of the season each year, Charlie and Jean have a “blow-out sale.” Then, reports Charlie, “There’s always ice cream left. So, we give it to the Boys’ & Girls’ Club, Golden Meadows, the Women’s Shelter and the First United Methodist Youth Group.” Which, of course, makes for a lot of happy people. Free entertainment in the form of 2 corn hole boards, a Jenga game, and sidewalk chalk provide fun for all ages. Last year, “The Back 27” (2 + 7 = 9 holes) miniature golf course opened behind the eatery. Charlie designed the tiny course and, with his son’s help, constructed the first hole. Jason Egly and his Bellmont High School shop department built the remaining holes. The Brunes added the carpet and finishing touches to the easilyreconfigured course. “Miniature golf is $2 for 9 holes. Players receive a $.50 coupon when the club is returned.” Charlie feels he can’t boast enough about his staff. “We’ve ended up with a really, really good crew. The girls run it. They’ve done a great job.” The Brunes gladly work around the schedules of

The couple’s interest in young people of the community has spanned more than two decades. The pair have served as Scout leaders, youth group leaders, and volunteers in various capacities at the high school. Turning his attention back to The Old 27 Ice Cream Shop, Charlie reflects, “In our bigger picture of things, it’s exactly what we wanted to do. It’s not about Charlie and Jean. It is about what this can do for the community. “When you come downtown, in the evening especially, people are riding their bike, walking their babies. People are sitting at the ice cream shop just watching the world go by—downtown is where you want to be. “It’s been a lot of fun, a great experience. It is a lot of work. “But, at the end of the day, did we accomplish what we wanted to do? It’s exactly what we wanted to do. We’re glad we did it.”

Limberlost Diner:
Tasty, Home-Cooked Menu Options Article by Jaci Gorrell
S
tarting your morning with a hearty, home-cooked breakfast and much needed cup of freshly brewed coffee is one of the best ways to kick off a great day; and at the Limberlost Diner in downtown Geneva, Indiana, you can do just that! Limberlost Diner, which opened in November of 2014, is owned and operated by the husband and wife team of Scott and Tammy Hodle. Before starting their restaurant, the pair found their niche together in the food industry in Indiana—and beyond. Though Tammy and Scott both grew up in Indiana, the pair moved to Tennessee for
several years before returning and opening the restaurant. While in Tennessee, the couple worked in the food service in various settings. Tammy recalls, “Scott and I have both worked at Cracker Barrel, and when we lived in Tennessee, we worked at a restaurant called Applewood down in Pigeon Forge. In all, we’ve both worked at a bunch of different restaurants!” This work experience served the duo well when they decided to move back to Indiana. Both Tammy and Scott shared a love for cooking, so when the current downtown

restaurant property went on sale, the urging of those around them encouraged the Hodles to try their hand at the restaurant business. “When this place came up for sale, everybody just kept telling me that I could do it. So, Scott and I talked about it and figured we’d try it,” Tammy explains. Before opening the diner, the Hodles did their part to spruce up the space. “We had to clean and paint, replace the floors, and redo the bathrooms,” recalls Tammy. “We also put in all new coolers and a new grill.” She continues, “I’ve been replacing and redoing stuff around here ever since we bought the place. If we get busy enough, I’d even like to expand it!” Today, the diner serves a variety of breakfast and lunch-time cuisine. The Limberlost Diner menu includes several selections of breakfast meals—encompassing dishes with eggs, potatoes, pancakes, French toast, and more—a wide assortment of burgers, various sandwiches, salads, and soups for
lunch, along with tasty sides like French fries, tater tots, onion rings, mushrooms, coleslaw, cottage cheese and a convenient kid’s menu option. So with all that food to choose from, what’s the go-to item on the menu? Scott answers,

“A lot of people go for the Breakfast in a Bowl or the Loaded Potatoes.” The Breakfast in a Bowl lives up to its all-compassing name, with gravy, potatoes, eggs, sausage, and more grav y. The Loaded Potatoes are similarly surreal, as they are served with bacon, mushrooms, green peppers, onions, and cheese—and are sure to satisfy. When asked how the pair decided what items would make the cut for the menu, Tammy responds, “We just kind of went with the basics—breakfast, burgers, salad, BLTs, sausage, chicken, etc. “But, we also have regulars that come in here every day, and some that come a few times a week, so we just started asking them what they liked or what they would like to see, and adapted the menu from there. “A lot of times, the regulars are the ones who tell me what they want for the lunch specials. And, that’s what we have.

In a further display of adaptability, Tammy adds, “We have chili every day, but if it’s cold and nasty out, I’ll make a vegetable soup, ham and beans, or chicken noodle so that we have two soups for variety.” Though the Limberlost Diner is still relatively young, it has already taken on some big business endeavors. Tammy explains, “I catered to FCC at Christmas for the first time!”

Scott adds, “That was at least 500 people.” The Hodles confirm that the Limberlost Diner staff is available to cater future gatherings and events. As with any business endeavor, starting up and running the Limberlost Diner has presented a season of learning for the Hodles, as well as several challenges and rewards. According to Tammy, the challenging aspect of the business is “just trying to make sure that I have everything that I need when I need it.” The best part of being in the restaurant business? She answers, “I’m getting to know more people around town by doing this.” If you are looking for a local dining option with charming atmosphere and a wide variety of food options, the Limberlost Diner is the place to be!
