CHAIN REACTION BIKE CENTER:

Wheels of Freedom and Fitness Article by Beth Steury; Photos by Ed Ferguson

B

iking has been a lifelong interest for Randy Braun, owner of Chain Reaction Bike Center, located in rural Decatur, Indiana. “I always rode as a kid and enjoyed it. It’s the first taste of freedom and independence for kids.” Randy continued to ride into adulthood, seeking better, faster bikes. Now a husband and father, he shares his enthusiasm for biking with his family. They recently participated in the Indy N.I.T.E. (Navigate Indy This Evening) Ride, which gives riders a chance to experience the “thrill of bicycling by starlight.” In 2009,

Braun and his son took part in RAIN—Ride Across Indiana—the 157 mile biking event that crosses the state from west to east in one day. “It was a fun, challenging ride.” Randy has also participated in 11 of the last 12 years of the Hilly Hundred, an event where bikers cover 50 miles on Saturday and 50 more on Sunday in the scenic hills of southern Indiana. He remembers finding the ride especially challenging in the earlier years but says, “I’m used to it now.” Several years ago, when the Crossroads Church (now Common Ground) encouraged members to brainstorm new ministry ideas,

Braun suggested, “It would be neat to fix up bikes and give them away to the needy.” To learn the ins and outs of bike repair, he volunteered at a local bike shop. After volunteering for a number of years, Randy secured a part-time paying job at the shop. Later, when he lost his full-time job of 16 years, due to downsizing, he went back to the bike shop on a parttime basis. During the year he was without full-time employment, Randy’s wife Kelli encouraged, “Go for your passion and open a bike shop.” He scouted for places to rent in the spring of 2010 and discovered an available space above the Shaka Shack on Jackson St r e e t i n d o w n t o w n Monroe. Randy opened his bike shop a short time later. “It was very interesting carrying bikes up the stairs. Tandems were pretty tough,” he remembers with a chuckle. “But, it was doable, and the Lord blessed us.” He now sees the loss of his job as “a blessing in disguise.”

After a couple years, Randy purchased two acres of land from his father and built a new shop on County Road 300 North just outside Decatur. Chain Reaction Bike Center’s current location opened in the spring of 2013. The family later built a home next to the shop. Today, Randy is employed at EP Graphics in Berne, Indiana, and he operates the growing bike center in the evenings and on Saturdays. “We have a large selection of new and used bikes, and the inventory keeps growing,” Randy says. Serious cyclers don’t have to drive to the big city— Chain Reaction deals in the signature, hi-end models made by Schwinn, Raleigh, Sun (known for their adult tricycles), Diamondback, GT and Torker.

“We also carry parts and accessories, as well as vintage parts and bikes.” If Chain Reaction does not have it in stock, anything a bike owner would need or want can be ordered. Bike computers are popular amongst avid riders who want to track their speed, distance and even the number of calories burned. “A lot more people are cycling these days,” he says. “The baby boomer generation is really getting into cycling and fitness.” Many cities have become friendlier to bike enthusiasts through the construction or expansion of bike paths and bike lanes. The latest trend in bicycles are the balloon “fat tire” bikes with comfortable seats, handle bars that angle back toward the rider, old-fashioned fenders, and a retro look that appeals to many of today’s shoppers. “The 50 to 70 year-old riders are actually the largest market right now,” Braun reports. And, these “comfort bikes,” sporting flashy colors and a softer, easier ride are especially popular with the adult population.

become available in the last three to four years. This tiny bicycle without pedals is an alternative to a traditional bike with training wheels—it allows very young riders to learn balance and steering while walking, scooting or coasting. Regardless of the rider’s age, Braun is a firm believer in helmet usage. He was involved in a serious bike accident in 2006 that broke his collar bone and shoulder blade and cracked his helmet. “All the organized rides require a helmet,” he advises. In addition to its selection of new and used bicycles, parts and accessories, Chain Reaction also offers repair services. “I love restoring antique bikes,” says Randy. “In the winter months, I do a lot of that.” He enjoys tracking down original parts, as well as scoping out auctions, garage sales, and browsing eBay for old bikes he can restore or vintage parts that may come in handy later. In the shop, Randy proudly displays a circa 1909 tricycle. He rescued the

antique many years ago when his father-in-law had planned to discard it, giving his own children the opportunity to enjoy it while they were young. Randy’s “pride and joy” is the 1887 Springfield Roadster high wheel bicycle he tracked down in Ohio. This bicycle, known as a “safety bike,” operates with an elliptical motion that uses springs to move the bike forward at a slower pace. While operational at this point, the antique bike is yet in need of a copper spring. Randy says the crucial part is difficult to find and may need to be fabricated. Whether it’s selling new or used bicycles, restoring a vintage bike or supplying parts and accessories, Braun’s aim is to meet the customer’s need. “Our main goal is customer satisfaction,” he notes. “I believe everything happens for a reason. This shop is part of God’s plan for my life. The Lord orchestrated things, and I’m just going with the flow and looking forward to the next chapter.” The Brauns hope to double the size of their building in the coming years. “None of this would be possible without my wife’s help,” says Randy. “She is the office manager and assists in the shop.” Check out Chain Reaction Bike Center’s wide range of new and used bicycles Monday through Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and by appointment. #

NIBLICK’S DOWNTOWN BISTRO:

ith a bit of trepidation, mother-son duo Seth and Judy Secaur launched Niblick’s Downtown Bistro in January 2013. Judy’s 30 years of catering through her business, A Taste of Class, coupled with Seth’s culinary arts training at Ivy Tech, brings a unique dining experience to the historic “Niblick” building in downtown Decatur. Judy’s culinary skills blossomed years ago as she managed a church kitchen and assisted with weddings. As her passion for cooking grew, she decided to open her own catering business, operating from a shop on 2nd Street for 20 years. Many of Judy’s recipes were handed down from her grandmother,

who helped in the kitchen at A Taste of Class into her seventies. Seth, on the other hand, attended Ivy Tech in pursuit of an applied science associate’s degree. He worked under several chefs and gained valuable experience in a 5-star restaurant. It made sense for the duo, both graduates of Belmont High School, to combine their efforts. “We wanted to bring something unique to Decatur, not just a cookie-cutter restaurant,” Seth shares. Throughout its rich history, the two-story structure at the corner of 2nd and Monroe

Streets has housed a variety of businesses. In 2009, the building’s current owner, Rick Sovine, opened The Next Page Bookstore and a coffee shop. The bistro later closed, but the bookstore remained. A couple years later, Seth and Judy approached Rick with their ideas for an eatery. They re-branded the former coffee shop, reconfigured the first floor to separate the bistro from the bookstore, and made a slight tweak to the name. The Secaurs were mindful of the need to keep their prices affordable. “We went with the model of a Panera or Applebee’s lunch, where you can get in and get out for under ten dollars without sacrificing quality.” Originally, the bistro dabbled in offering breakfast, but later settled on the current 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. lunch schedule. The first year-and-a-half, the bistro also offered dinner a couple nights a week, featuring pasta and live music on Thursday nights. On special occasions, such as during Fleetwood’s recent motorhome national rally and the Decatur Sculpture Tour unveiling, Niblick’s revives the Italian-themed evening and provides musical entertainment. Niblick’s colorful, professionally-printed menu boasts croissants, paninis, toasted sandwiches, and sides. A variety of desserts are made fresh daily, and several specials are available in

addition to the core menu items. “It’s a lot of comfort food,” says Seth. He enjoys adding his own flair to the dishes by combining unique flavors that pop in your mouth. “We try to stick with more organic, more natural, trendier options,” Seth explains, noting that these days, people are leaning more toward healthier options.

“We focus more on our flatbreads, wraps, soups, and salads. I make all my sauces and soups from scratch. I have nine types of artisan breads on my menu.” Vegetarian entrees are available, as well. Popular with the bistro’s customers are the Oriental salad and wraps, each featuring fresh organic greens, coupled with mandarin oranges, cilantro, water chestnuts, and Seth’s signature, sautéed roasted garlic lime chicken, topped with his own sesame ginger vinaigrette. A big success this spring and summer is the margharita flatbread topped with goat milk cheese, pesto, Roma tomatoes, basil and balsamic reduction. Another hit with customers is the citrus spring salad, made with a blend of micro greens topped with diced shallots, pistachios, dried cranberries, chopped peaches, and goat milk cheese, tossed with Niblick’s own citrus cilantro vinaigrette. “Anything can be customized. I aim to please,” notes Seth, even if that means toasting a cheese sandwich and cutting off the crust for his pre-school aged customers. The linen covered, glass-topped tables do indeed provide a touch of elegance, yet the atmosphere is far from stuffy. Rather, it’s comfortable and inviting. The Secaurs appreciate the building’s original hardwood floors and high ceilings and have decorated in a way that compliments these classic features. Seth and Judy enjoy getting to know their customers, many of whom have

become regulars and often phone in their “usual” orders. Still, not everyone has discovered this unique eatery. Judy admits, “A couple times a week, we welcome a new customer who didn’t know we were here.” “We hope people will come as guests and leave as friends,” Seth invites. Last year, Niblick’s Downtown Bistro was featured in the Journal Gazette’s food critic column. The columnist patronized the bistro three times before introducing himself via a telephone call. He gave the eatery 3½ stars, along with many positive comments, and also offered valuable feedback. While mother and son host a thriving lunch crowd at the bistro, the Taste of Class arm of the business offers a variety of catering options. Niblick’s does off-site catering for banquets or company events, as well as onsite catering for personal, intimate occasions, such as birthday parties or showers. The bistro can seat 55 to 60 people when additional chairs and tables are brought in. “We do any kind of catering job. People call with specific requests, and we will

make any kind of dessert or side.” Currently, they shy away from big-scale baking, due to the size of their kitchen, although Seth would eventually love to include confectionaries on a larger scale. Wedding season and graduation time make for a busy spring and summer. Niblick’s catering calendar also fills up toward the end of the year with company Christmas parties. They have a brigade of people they call on to serve at these special events. “We’d love to get to the point where we can facilitate the really big-league catering,” says Seth. “We’re building slowly toward that. I’d love to see us expand and eventually outgrow this building.” While Seth would love to pursue additional training and be schooled by other chefs, his days are full with a growing family and the thriving bistro. He appreciates the opportunity to experiment and do “his own thing” in the family business. Visit Niblick’s Downtown Bistro for a close-to-home, big-city dining experience, Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Check out their Facebook page and website for mouthwatering glimpses of daily and seasonal specials. #

ighways 67 and 26 merge at a wide curve just outside Portland, Indiana. Inside that generous sweep at the western edge of the county seat stand two landmark broadcast towers. Near the towers sits a small, unassuming 1950s-era building that houses an amazing blend of changing technologies. Here, you’ll find Jay County’s own radio station, WPGW, broadcasting at 100.9 FM and 1440 AM. WPGW’s FM listeners enjoy country music, while the AM version is described as a “contemporary” format.

WPGW’s website lists its weekday broadcast schedule, which covers local news, as well as farm reports, commodity reports, and sports schedules. The website also links to streaming audio, which provides entire broadcasts online. WPGW’s sister station, WZBD, broadcasts at 92.7 FM and serves Adams County. The station’s website aptly describes both the Portland and Berne stations: “Putting community first, WZBD features local news, high school sports, festivals, events and innovative on-air promotions.”

Rob Weaver, station owner a n d W P G W m a n a g e r, modestly informs, “Anything that’s happening, we try to be there covering what’s going on —like the Jay County Fair, and so on.” A brief conversation with Rob quickly reveals he is intimately aware of “what’s going on” in the community. The genial and gregarious gentleman is also President of the Jay County Fair Board. He notes, “I’ve been on that board for the past 35 years.” In fact, the telephone line for the fair board goes through the switchboard at the radio station. “We would miss a lot of calls, if it weren’t for that.” Rob is also a member the local Rotar y and Lions clubs, and, he says, “I’ve been involved in the United Way.” His “involvement” there includes a tenure on the board of directors of the United Way, and he headed the United Way yearly campaigns “back in the early 80s.” Rob’s community involvement includes serving on the Jay County Historical Society’s Board of Directors. “We have a nice historical museum at the end of east Main Street in Portland,” he explains.

middle-aged people. Glen and his wife, Bea, did most of the advertising live or from reel-to-reel tape recordings they made. “Glen was an interesting person,” says Rob. “He’d put a record on the turntable and go out and mow the lawn.” Rob laughs. “Sometimes, he didn’t make it back in time.” Rob and his staff have already converted most of the old technologies to smaller and more efficient digital equipment and storage media. They are currently archiving the “cart tapes” and associated hardware that selected and played the tapes from racks, similar to old jukeboxes. Rob and his partner Bob Brandon, formerly of WOWO in Fort Wayne, purchased WPGW in 1974. Rob works with a small staff but he says he is “really lucky—my staff members, for the most part, have been here thirtyplus years.

“Jeff Overholser is pretty much my mid-day man on the air at WPGW. He comes on at 8 a.m and gets off at 3 p.m. He does a lot of production of the commercials we do. He is the righthand man, as far as day-to-day, on-air activity.

“Then, Eric Kaderly is on the air from 3 p.m. to sign-off at 10 p.m. He’s been here for about 20 years. One of my salesmen, Gerald Jellison, has been here for 40 years. “We’ve had a very stable staff, which makes things a lot easier for me.” WPGW’s receptionist, who also answers the fair board telephone, is Laurette Horn. “Our FM station is the equivalent of 3000 watts. Our towers are a bit shorter than normal. We are about 200 feet, so we are allowed a bit more power.” At night, the stations are on automation—all done digitally. Rob explains, “We have Cincinnati baseball coverage, and we have the capability of automating that. We have a lot of live features during the day, so we are usually automated only at nighttime.” As Rob contemplates the future of the station, he says, “It’s been a wonderful ride for me because I just love the interaction between the radio station and the community—and being a community-minded station with local news and local sports coverage.” Rob says, “As long as we have a community presence, we will survive and not be swallowed up by the new technology of today. Our success story for survival has been telling about the community we live in and being involved in the community.” #

or Robin Lamb, becoming a Certified Massage Therapist was not a difficult decision. “I’ve just always wanted to be one, ever since I was a little girl.”

certification she had dreamed of since childhood. More recently, she opened Limberlost Massage and Wellness in downtown Geneva.

Robin grew up in the small town of Benicia, California and eventually moved to the Geneva, Indiana area to get to know her grandparents. “Benicia was a small town, and everybody looked out for each other.” Geneva was a sort of “home away from home” for her.

Robin discovered a distasteful aspect of some massage therapy while working at a larger facility—something she kept in mind when starting her own business. “I try to make all my prices reasonable because when I worked in Fort Wayne, the rate was 60 dollars an hour.

In 2002, after two years of study, Robin graduated from the Regional College of Massage Therapy in Fort Wayne with the

another five minutes to get dressed. They’d subtract ten minutes from your hour, so you really get a 50-minute massage. “I worked there a year, and I didn’t like it. It was money, money, money—it was not about massage. You couldn’t make real contact with the person. We just had to do a basic in-and-out.” When the opportunity to work in a nearby massagerelated shop arose, Robin jumped at the chance. “Steve Hampshire had the electric massage chair, and he opened across the street. I asked if I could work there, and he said ‘yes.’” From there, the partnership between Robin and Steve became Limberlost Massage and Wellnes s , at the suggestion of Hampshire. The name encompasses both partners’ work; Steve sells a line of health merchandise called ‘Forever’ products—all natural vitamins, toothpastes, gels, drinks, and more—and functions as the ‘wellness’ half of the equation, while Robin offers massage. The Limberlost Massage and Wellness experience is one marked by Robin’s heart for service and quality care. “I don’t want someone walking out the door and not feeling better than when they walked in.

“With some massage therapists,” she explains, “you hurt for two or three days before you get relief. To me, that’s not a massage. You go to a massage to relax, not to hurt.” From the get-go, Limberlost Massage and Wellness keeps the best interest of a client in the forefront. “When clients come in, they can have any kind of herbal tea they want. I set my appointments with an hour between. That way, if I go over on a client, no one else is kept waiting.”

WET & WILD WEEKEND

Above all, Limberlost Massage and Wellness is tailored to the needs of clients—even down to the curtains! “We have curtains instead of doors.” Robin explains, “There’s a reason for that. People feel more at ease with a curtain than a door.

TEEN WEEKEND

“If they don’t feel comfortable during a massage, they can get up and leave. But, if there’s a door, they don’t know if the door is locked—and, if they’re stuck with this therapist. They really can’t get a good, relaxing massage if they’re uncomfortable.” In addition to massage therapy, Robin also offers all-natural products for sale, such as soaps, oils, lotions, and herbs. “I’m an herbalist, so I do oils. Everything I have in my office is all natural; I don’t even work on people unless it’s natural oils or lotions.” Though CMTs are not required to adhere to such standards, Robin says, “I’d rather use all-natural.” Robin also works to make her massagebased pain relief tactics accessible to

Tricks, such as using two tennis balls in a sock for relieving back pain, sleeping with a neck pillow to avoid waking up with a stiff neck , and using a pool noodle as a roller for a sore back, are just a few of Robin’s tips. “I think a tennis ball and a sock will cost something like a dollar-fifty.” For those who aren’t into lotions and essential oils, Limberlost Massage and Wellness offers handcrafted wooden animals and whirligigs made by Robin’s husband, Bob, as well as affordable earrings. “I have a selection of sterling silver earrings. My brother makes them. They’re beautiful and they’re reasonably priced at six dollars a pair.” Perhaps the most unique aspect of Limberlost Massage and Wellness is the way Robin goes out of her way to make her services a blessing. “I do cancer massage. Cancer massage is when you work with a cancer patient

until the day they die. I take one person a year and massage them for free… that’s just where my heart goes. “I don’t do it to gain more clients; I do it to relax the person. When someone is in so much pain, massage can relax them, and then their medication can take effect.” Robin walks a step further with her cancer massage clients. Speaking of one, she says, “He’s at the stage where I can’t do anything for him, but I do go and visit him. I bring him ice cream, just to be there. Hospice comes, but they can’t give quality time like I can.” In the future, Robin hopes to expand her business into a full-time operation. “Then I can help more people.” She also plans to bring in another professional—her dog, a beagle and boxer mix named Punky Duw. “We just finished a year of dog class. He’s going to be a massage dog. “I want to take him to handicapped kids that don’t have any animals and let them play with him. It’s like therapy. It doesn’t cost a dime, but it’s just the love—just to see a kid smile.” Massages start at $45 for one hour and are available, by appointment only, between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. To schedule an appointment, call anytime Monday or Saturday, or during regular business hours Tuesday through Friday. #

uring World War II, Rick Kuhlman’s dad was a cook. While in the service, he learned how to cut up meat and prepare it to order. After the war, he joined the hordes of decommissioned servicemen and women, joined the workforce, and started a family. Several years later, in 1962, Mr. Kuhlman opened a restaurant in the village of Kalida in Putnam County, Ohio using some of the skills he had honed during the war. The Kuhlmans called it The Black Angus, and it soon became a staple in Kalida. Mr. Kuhlman and his family continued to operate the successful business for many years, doing well enough to open other

branches of The Black Angus and related food service businesses in the Lima area. Early in the 1980s, Mr. Kuhlman passed away, leaving the restaurant in the capable hands of his family. In 1992, the decision was made to close not only The Black Angus, but also all of the other family’s small businesses. According to residents of Putnam County, it was a sad day when the door was closed and locked for the last time! Flash forward to the present day: a large building in Van Wert that had housed several restaurants over the years suddenly became available. The owner, also a native of

Putnam County, contacted Rick Kuhlman and asked if he would like to acquire the building and its contents and reinvent the family’s legacy in Van Wert. “I thought about it for a while, and, after talking it over with my friend, Eric Heidensur, we decided to give it a try. Why not?” Rick smiles. The deal was made, plans were drawn, and, before you knew it, a new eatery, The Black Angus on Main, was ready for the public. Ready? Sort of. “The menu is still in flux. We’re trying different things out this summer to see what folks here in Van Wert County really enjoy,” Rick explains. “It won’t be set for awhile, until at least September. In the meantime, we offer quite an array of appetizers, entrees, and sandwiches, as well as a full wet bar.” The signature offering of The Black Angus on Main is, of course, beef. Fresh, hand-cut steaks head the menu, all USDA choice sirloin, available in eight, ten, and twelve-ounce cuts. “My dad also offered steak for two, and we’ve followed his lead on that. It’s a good deal. A full 22 ounces of steak—with sides, of course!” All entrees come with two sides—everything from the traditional baked potato, to salads or steamed broccoli. Besides sirloin steak, you can also order a 12-ounce New York strip, a

The Black Angus offers seafood, including lobster tails, served with warm butter sauce, and fresh, seasoned Atlantic grilled salmon, grilled chicken breast, baby back ribs (full or half slab), and chicken parmesan, covered with house-made sauce. If you’re not quite up to a full entree, The Black Angus offers a savory side board of sandwiches and salads, including a custom ground 6-ounce burger with your choice of toppings, a Reuben with fresh-cut corn beef served on thick rye bread, a made-in-house hand-breaded pork tenderloin, a triple decker club sandwich with ham, turkey, and bacon, and a grilled or breaded chicken breast. “‘We haven’t been able to get this since you closed the restaurant in Kalida!’ they told me. It was my privilege to be able to offer one of my dad’s signature appetizers again!” When you enter The Black Angus on Main, the first thing you’ll probably notice are the renovations made to the dining area. Each table now has matching wooden chairs of the same hue, as the wall paneling, and the side tables are each accented with a beautiful Tiffany-style hanging lamp. A new wine bar, just opened in July, graces one corner of the restaurant. On the upper level of the dining area is a huge wooden hutch, refinished by Rick’s wife, displaying memorabilia from the original Black Angus. “Black Angus Catering and More will remain physically separate from the restaurant,” Rick explains. “Our facility on Westwood in Van Wert has much more room—something we need for preparing the quantity of food we serve.” He adds, “Eric Heidensur is a unique talent in the kitchen, and he’ll remain in charge of things downtown.” The Black Angus on Main is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays. A full-service brunch is offered from 11 to 2 on Sundays, with a constantly shifting menu. Bon appetit! #

day in a restaurant-style dining room, and paid utilities, as well as 24-hour assistance with bathing, dressing, eating, and medication supervision. Fourteen of the assisted living units are stipulated for memory care. Another 30 units are designated for full-time skilled nursing care. River Terrace Retirement Community got its start in 1988, when Dr. Charles H. Caylor and Mr. Ware Baker donated the 60 acres of lush woodlands to CaylorNickel Medical Center. Their intention was to create not-for-profit, affordable living for Wells County senior citizens. In 1999, Caylor-Nickel Medical Center was sold with a stipulation that the future River Terrace Retirement Community remain not-for-profit, as planned. The community’s board of directors enlisted Greystone Communities, Inc, of Dallas, Texas to ensure the original goals of Dr. Caylor and the Medical Center were brought to fruition.

River Terrace Estates, including its independent and assisted living facilities, opened in May 2003. The Health Care Center, offering short-term and long-term skilled nursing, opened in July of the same year. In February 2015, says River Terrace’s Administrator, Nicole Melching, the community came under new ownership/management by Mark Ide and Ide Management Group. Ide Management has diligently kept to the ideals which first established River Terrace Retirement Community and continues to maintain high standards of living for its residents. Nicole has been with River Terrace for the past four years. Her job as administrator has been primarily ensuring the safety of the residents, as well as coordinating resident services and dealing with financial considerations. “I believe serving our residents and interacting with them would have to be my favorite duties,” she says.
