SNAPPING FAMILY
PORTRAITS & FRAMING NATURE’S ART Article by Sylvia Marbach Photos by Tara Steffen
F
rom a young age, Tara Steffen was fascinated with art and photography. “I got my first camera when I was seven or eight,” she remembers, “and it was a Holly Hobby camera.”
“He taught me all about light and shadowing, and how to draw. And, that was the basics for photography.
Tara lived in Berne as a child and attended South Adams until she was 14. “I always liked art. I loved Mr. (Ted) Schwartz; he was my favorite teacher.
Tara’s next encounter with a camera was years later after her first son was born. When that camera broke, Tara was crushed because she’d lost a number of baby pictures.
“I really enjoyed learning from him. I miss him a lot.”
5
“My husband felt so bad, he went out and bought me a new camera, right then and there. I’ve had a camera ever since.” The skills that Tara now uses in her own photography business have been self-taught. She explains, “I read a lot on the Internet. I watch YouTube tutorials a lot – they’re very beneficial. “I also see what other people do, as far as their photography. I think, How did they do
that? How did they get that color? How did they get that light? “Then, I start researching it to figure out how to do the same thing.” Tara has also learned a lot from “trial and error.” She explains, “If I took a bad picture, I learned from it for future attempts. Maybe I needed to set the camera on a tripod so it wouldn’t shake – just little things I kept learning and teaching myself.

“I’m still learning. I am independent, I’m a go-getter, and I’m self-taught. But, I catch on pretty quick, so that helps.”
Remember the Reason for the Season!
Tara has picked up tricks of the trade from other photographers. “There were photographers out there that I really admired. I knew they knew how to take pictures. Their photography is excellent, and that’s why I started to watch and see how they were doings things. “And, expertise is really what you gain,” Tara continues. “I don’t want to be just like them, but I want my level of photography to be where theirs is.” It wasn’t necessarily Tara’s intent, at first, to become a photographer. She was already employed and otherwise very busy – as the mother of six. “Other people really pushed me into it,” she says. “I was taking pictures of my own kids and putting them on my blog. I was just starting to get into Facebook.” Friends noticed Tara’s photos and asked if she would take photos of their kids. Tara began photographing for friends and family. Her earlier learning, combined with experience, has allowed her to flourish as a photographer. “I can hardly look at the old pictures now,” she admits, “because you just grow so much over the years. You learn more, get more experience, and you just get better and better.” Quality isn’t only about technique. Tara has also made improvements in her equipment. “I actually started with a Kodak EASYSHARE camera. It took really good pictures outside, but as I started taking more and more pictures, I knew I was going to have to get something better.”

Tara’s next camera was an improvement but still performed poorly in low light. “So, I went with the Canon 5D,” she says. “I was so excited because I found it at a discount. After I got it, I went to put my lenses on it, but most of them didn’t fit. I was floored.

“But, in the end, I found I had two lenses that worked. They were prime lenses. Now that’s all I own – prime lenses. With these, the focus is so sharp that, even if it’s a distance picture, you can still zoom in well enough that you can crop it way down and get a very, very nice picture.” Over time, Tara saw an exponential increase in the success of her business, which she dubbed Tara Steffen Fotos – she chose the foreign spelling of “photo” in honor of a Nicaraguan child she sponsors. Tara realized there would be some real benefits to pursuing photography full-time. “My goal was to just do photography, to forget working outside our home. It was a nice little income, and it got me outside of the house; but now, I see enough people on a daily or weekly basis. I don’t feel like I need to get out of the house anymore. “It’s nice to be independent, and to be home for the kids. I want to be there for them, and I want to take pictures of them.” Two of Tara’s six boys are students at South Adams. The other four have finished high school, and two of these are now married. Tara says she’s noticed a few changes in herself since she began picking up the camera as an entrepreneur. “If you’re a photographer,” she explains,

“you know that the world as you see it changes. “When I go outside, I’m constantly looking at light through my flowers and at my yard, thinking, I’m going to get my camera and get a good picture of that. It’s constantly there – as if I’m always looking through a camera lens. “And, when I go to the store – I don’t mean to – but I’m constantly looking for props. It drives me nuts,” she laughs. “I just don’t look at the world the same anymore.”

Tara doesn’t claim to have a specialty. Rather, she says, “I love shooting everything and anyone. I cover weddings, seniors, babies, and families.” Tara has done some commercial photography, too, and sells prints of nature close-ups and scenic landscapes. Although Tara’s business is growing, her ambitions are still pretty small. “You always want to have more clients, or someday, get a new, nicer camera, but I feel like I’ve done so much already in my life. My life is so full, and it’s so blessed that I could just be happy being done right now, and everything would be good. “I don’t focus on the future too much. Everyday, you do what you need to do that day, and you try to do it a little bit better. That’s how I look at life, in general.”

LOCKER’S ABOUNDS

F
or Roger Locker, of Portland, Indiana, the gift business is something that he grew to love and has been working on for many years. What started out as a side business housed in a barn has flourished into a fulltime gift shop that employs two friends, in addition to Roger and his wife Angie. Several years ago, Roger was selling cleaning equipment for a family-owned
company just east of Indianapolis. The business was struggling, and after Roger had worked there for seventeen years, all non-family employees were suddenly let go. Roger saw this as an opportunity to focus on growing his part-time gift business. So, he began working more at the shop and also attended antique shows and craft fairs around Indiana. He would travel to
11
Indianapolis to set up a tent for a show, or visit an arts and crafts mall, in order to promote his business and sell his inventory. As with most companies, there were peaks and valleys. Roger found his business picked up significantly around the holidays. He noticed a steady increase in traffic around Christmas, Valentine’s
Day, and Mother’s Day, and he realized he could do more to build his company. In 2005, Roger moved the business to its current location at 204 West Votaw Street in Portland – his beloved hometown. He was a 1969 graduate of Jay County High School. After relocating the shop, known as Locker’s Touch of Country Gifts, to a
more central location, Roger saw the business grow. But, he wasn’t able to keep employees during slower seasons. He says letting staff go was “one of the hardest things he had to do.” In 2006, Roger expanded his inventory to include bereavement gifts so he could employ his staff year-round. What many see on the outside – the “concrete statue place” – is only a small glimpse of the store’s offerings. Inside, there are two separate focuses: the traditional gift shop and the bereavement gift shop. On the traditional gift side, Locker’s offers items like Yankee candles, Willow Tree® statues, snowmen figures, Christmas gifts, Duck Dynasty items, Harley-Davidson® memorabilia, solar military rocks, outdoor decorations, and so much more. The bereavement side offers gifts like angels, wind chimes, memory boxes, framed prints, silk flower arrangements, decorative throws, and concrete statues, just to name a few. Locker’s carries gifts for any occasion, including births and other special celebrations for that special someone. Greeting cards are readily available near the cash register, along with bags and gift-wrap. Another unique service that Locker’s provides is free delivery of their bereavement gifts to area funeral homes in Berne, Dunkirk, Fort Recovery, Geneva, Pennville, Portland and Redkey. Ordering is as easy as stopping by or placing a phone call. As Locker’s continues to expand, so does the need for storage. Recently,

Roger purchased a storage barn and placed it next door to the facility to house more stock. “It makes it convenient to just walk around the corner,” he says. Angie, a recently retired French teacher of 36 years, assists Roger in the shop and “acts as his support system.” For the Lockers, who celebrated their second wedding anniversary in September, the unique gift shop is not just about inviting others to stop by and purchase gifts for loved ones. It’s about the experience and the business “family” – the Lockers building relationships with their employees and customers. Employees Jackie Brown and Emily Daugherty have been with Locker’s for several years. Emily and Roger grew up just down the road from each other as kids and were country neighbors. Jackie says the Lockers are “like family” to her. And, like a family, everyone pitches in when needed. The Lockers have seven grandkids and one on the way. They recently purchased a large motor home and have been using it enjoy time with grandchildren – whether they take it tailgating or go out for ice cream. As the holidays approach, Angie and Roger plan to take the motor home when they go Christmas shopping and when they stock up for holiday shoppers at the store.

CUTE & COMFY
KNIT ITEMS FOR CHILDREN & ADULTS Article & Photos by Tara Steffen

orking from home can be a rewarding experience for those who are fortunate enough to do so. Becki Schwartz, the mother of three, knows the joys of staying home to be with her girls while running a small business on the side. Before quitting her job in 2011 to stay home with her young daughter, Becki worked at Kinder Haus Daycare in Berne, Indiana. With quite a bit more free time on her hands, she decided to learn how to knit. Becki’s mother,
who crochets, and sister-in-law, who knits, were part of her inspiration to begin learning this art. Becki has always been a do-it-yourself kind of person. She admired all the cute little hats that photographers use for props in their photography and thought, “I can learn how to do that.” Becki started watching video tutorials online to learn basic stitching and later learned how to do patterns. She says she learned by pausing the
17
video frequently and replaying a clip over and over until she understood the concept. Then, she moved on to the next clip. Becki prefers thicker yarns because they knit together more quickly. Sometimes, it’s difficult to switch colors and still get a project to look right because yarn thickness needs to match between one color to the next, or it could throw off the pattern and overall finished look. With the knack for knitting under her belt, Becki decided to learn crocheting earlier this
year. She has already mastered that, as well. She has also found that crochet is much faster than knitting and is starting to use this method more often. Now, Becki sells her handmade items, including hats, headbands, and cup cozies, on Etsy and Facebook. She calls her home-based online business Lost Her Stitches. Becki also gets e-mails and texts from friends and family asking her to make special orders for them.

Becki has begun to design her own style of hats, as well. She is quite creative, knitting and crocheting hats that include bows or eyes and noses –anything to make the hat unique and original. Many of Becki’s special orders are for character hats. She has made HELLO KITTY® designs, as well as minion hats patterned after the small yellow and purple creatures from the children’s movie, Despicable Me. Becki has also created cupcake hats, hats with ear flaps, owl hats, and many others.

Becki loves that her girls can help by trying on a new project upon completion to make sure things fit and that the item looks right. Becki’s girls often model items while she takes photos to use in marketing the items online. Her oldest daughter has also accompanied her to yarn stores to help search out skeins of yarn that include free patterns. On one occasion, Becki’s daughter grabbed one that had a picture of a hat on it and asked Becki if she could make this one. The pattern looked rather challenging to Becki at the time, but she was pleasantly surprised when it did turn out well. She’s made all of her daughter’s friends their own versions of the hat, as well. While Becki especially enjoys making hats, she loves trying other projects, too. She has made cup cozies – and, mittens with a cozie built in. Some of the cozie designs are seasonal, while others include a sports team logo and are done in the team’s colors.

Karen’s Treasures
Becki also makes wash cloths and ear warmers in an array of brilliant colors. She’s also created home decor items, like pumpkins for fall, small baskets, and bags. Etsy sales are pretty steady, and Becki says that she gets one or two orders a week – enough for her, right now. She can usually complete a single project in about a days’ time. Although Becki likes small projects that can be completed quickly, she has begun a special project that will be meaningful and treasured for years to come. In March, Becki started knitting a queensize blanket, using skeins of yarn from her husbands’ late grandmother’s collection. She anticipates that this project will take several more months to complete. Becki’s daughters are beginning to take an interest in knitting and crocheting, as well. One of her daughters is already learning how to finger knit, and before she gets started, she is sure to ask if they have any plans for the next few hours. The younger Schwartz knows she can’t take the yarn off her hand until it’s completed, and she plans accordingly. Becki’s youngest daughter wants to learn how to knit, too, – not “just pretend” when Becki loans her a pair of needles for practicing. The proud mama says that the young girl already knows the difference between the needles and the hooks. Each of the Schwartz girls no doubt harbor a secret hope that some of the cute hats their mom makes don’t sell – so they might get to keep and wear them!

LASER TREATMENTS,
FACIALS, & OTHER PAMPERING FOR YOUR SKIN Article & Photos by Tara Steffen
S
ome people take pleasure in styling hair. Others are passionate about offering fashion advice. Rachelle Hanson loves helping people with their skin care issues. Rachelle, who attended Michigan State to pursue a degree in physiology, started out working at a medical office that offered laser
services, along with facials and corrective skin care. While employed here, Rachelle’s attention was diverted specifically to skin care issues. She noticed that treatment of various skin problems often brought an improvement in a person’s self-esteem, as well. Rachelle enrolled at Master’s School of Cosmetology in Fort
27
Wayne, eager to learn more about skin care. She was able to complete training in cosmetic laser treatments at her place of employment. In 2008, Rachelle and her husband, Dr. Craig E. Hanson, opened Solutions Skincare and Laser Center, LLC, in Decatur, Indiana. Rachelle says Solutions Skincare is a medical spa – the only one for over 100 miles – a cross between a medical clinic and a day spa.
Some of the services offered at Solutions Skincare include: laser treatments, microdermabrasion, photo facials, injectables and fillers (like BOTOX®), aggressive chemical peels, and skin tightening or skin rejuvenation. Rachelle does what’s called a private skin care analysis, where she sits down with a client to hear what concerns they have or what

they would like to change about their skin. Rachelle offers suggestions about available treatment or products that may help with the particular skin concerns or problems. While Rachelle is not a medical doctor, she’s fortunate enough to be married to one. Dr. Hanson comes into the office to administer injections and perform laser treatments. He sees patients in Decatur, as well as Fort Wayne, New Haven and Hicksville and Paulding, Ohio. Rachelle says that Solutions Skincare is different in that they do not offer cosmetic surgery. Instead, their services deal more with the overall health and appearance of the skin. Rachelle does not diagnose skin problems but can make suggestions to clients about improving their skin. Solutions Skincare specializes in antiaging treatments. Rachelle and her team provide a healthy regimen of skin care products that are medical-grade, meaning the active ingredients are of the highest quality. Most people who use products from department stores, Rachelle says, develop allergies because of the filler ingredients found in those kinds of products. Another common skin problem Rachelle sees is acne. Acne flare-ups can cause embarrassment and insecurity – as well as physical and emotional scars that may last a lifetime. People can have acne at nearly any stage in life, from adolescence through age 40, and beyond. Rachelle’s priority is achieving healthy skin and then caring for it. It usually only takes about one treatment to correct something like age spots. Anyone can have a face lift, chemical peel, or laser treatment, but if you don’t take care of your skin, more correction will be needed down the road.

Rachelle says she never tires of seeing the results that can be achieved in just a matter of a few short months. It’s not unusual for her to greet a woman who wears her hair long to hide her face – to see a new client who keeps her head down, as if ashamed of her appearance and seeking some sort of help. Rachelle loves to see the change in her clients each time they come back for another appointment. She says they stand a little straighter and just look more confident, overall. Some feel so much better about their appearance, they’ve dared to try a shorter haircut. They no longer feel the need to hide anything. In the Solutions Skincare office, there are numerous photo displays of real clients. Rachelle and her team have assisted these clients with anything from age spot removal to spider veins, to deep wrinkles and neck lifts. It’s not so much about vanity, Rachelle says, as it is about looking as good as you possibly can at the age you are.

This past summer, Solutions Skincare held a makeover contest to show people how to take 10 years off their appearance easily, without surgery, and in a relatively short amount of time. Solutions Skincare clients wanted to see this demonstration using a person between the ages of 65 to 75 – someone with a good deal of aging skin issues. For two months, the chosen lady underwent treatment for age spots and heavy wrinkles. The team performed photo facial treatments for the age spots, followed by PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) therapy. This is a relatively new procedure, where a client’s blood is drawn and spun to remove the plateletrich plasma.

833 N. 13th Street The plasma is then injected back into the client’s skin, usually in the face. This immediately promotes formation and growth of collagen in the skin. Collagen is lost with age, and when it is replaced, the skin will naturally begin to look and behave younger. The improvement continues for up to a year. Solutions Skincare revealed the results of their dramatic makeover at their annual Holiday Wine Tasting party last month. Those attending got to see photos of the test subject before treatment. And, they were able to inspect the final results in person at the party. Solutions Skincare and Laser Center provides opportunities to improve your skin without having to have surgery. Rachelle is very excited about their recent expansion to Jefferson Boulevard in Fort Wayne. The closest competing medical spa is located in Indianapolis. Rachelle says effective advertising is the hardest part of her job, because most people do not like to admit they have had work done. The staff of Solutions really appreciates when a client is willing to offer a testimonial. When asksed about her personal life – her life outside of work – Rachelle laughs and says that her work is her life! She has one child still at home, and another is studying to be a plastic surgeon. Rachelle also teaches post graduate classes to other estheticians, instructing them on more advanced therapies for clients.

SOMETHING FOR
EVERYONE TO ENJOY AT THE CUPBOARD Article & Photos by Holly Wuebker
T
his past July 1st, The Tin Cupboard in Fort Recovery, Ohio, celebrated its ninth anniversary. The downtown restaurant serves soups, salads and sandwiches, as well as home-style dinners. For Gail Tobe, owner and operator, customer satisfaction and employee sustainability rank high at the top of her list. She can proudly say that there has been zero turnover in her company since she started it nine years ago.
Rita Pleihman, an employee, says that’s one thing she enjoys about her work – her wonderful boss. She also “looks forward to getting up in the morning to go to work. “You never know who you are going to meet, and there are always new stories, with people coming in from out of town.” Rita goes from table to table, filling orders, smiling and talking to everyone in the shop.

Customers keep coming back to The Tin Cupboard, in part, because of the warm and friendly atmosphere. Rita remembers a gentleman from Dayton, Ohio, that would, “stop by on his way from Dayton to Celina, where he had a place on the lake. He just loved the atmosphere and the delicious food.”
Gersh’s NING, INC. CARPET CLEA
Upon first entering The Tin Cupboard, guests are welcomed by a tall decorative tree covered in red, white and blue trimmings. “The Military Freedom Prayer Tree” has been at the restaurant for over four years, and its fame continues to grow. Just prior to the start of the war in Iraq, Gail bought the tree. Following the holidays, she

couldn’t bring herself to take it down. Instead, she encouraged families to bring in pictures of their loved ones and place them on the tree. Gail says that she polled her customers, asking whether she should remove the tree, and they voted to keep it. So, the tree stands year-round in The Tin Cupboard, “reminding us of our freedoms and the great country we live in.” Seasonal decorations and dream catchers also adorn the business, giving it a homey, old-fashioned “mom-and-pop shop” feel. “The girls do the decorating,” says Gail. And, they do a mighty fine job. The food served at The Tin Cupboard is definitely scrumptious, with many homemade items like desserts, sauces, wraps and pies. An overall, familyand kid-friendly environment, The Tin Cupboard has something for everyone’s taste buds, from their homemade apple dumplings to their turkey bacon wraps. Everything they offer is sure to be delicious. Hand-dipped ice cream is offered yearround, and their breadsticks are one of the many items that Fort Recovery high school student Samantha Garke loves to stop in for. She says, “The cheese sauce is my favorite.” Samantha and four of her classmates like to enjoy a quick treat at The TIn Cupboard, prior to heading home for the evening. Rita asks the students about their favorite items at the deli, and unanimous replies of “breadsticks” and “ice cream” ring through the air. The Tin Cupboard is especially wellknown for its homemade pies and desserts. The cherry pie is a favorite among customers.

One thing many diners may not realize is that The Tin Cupboard offers catering for parties of all sizes. The restaurant caters to gatherings of fewer than ten people, while they’ve also served large receptions with over 650 people! Gail laughs. “No matter how big or small, we cater them all!”
Merry Christmas from Da Shack!
Diners at The Tin Cupboard enjoy homecooked meals, and the eatery also offers tasty soups and sandwiches. According to the staff, a regular customer once claimed the restaurant served “the best Reuben sandwiches in a three-state area.”

EVENTS IN LIFE WITH PIECES OF JEWELRY Article & Photos by Tara Steffen
A
s a young man, Daniel Geimer dreamed of owning his own business. It took years of hard work and training, but Dan realized his dream nearly two decades ago. Dan first began his career by answering an ad he saw in a Fort Wayne newspaper. He was hired as a manager trainee at Koerber
& Baber Jewelers, a store with locations at Southtown Mall and Glenbrook Square Mall. Koerber & Baber Jewelers, owned by the Zales Corporation, was part of the Zales’ guild division and a higher-end jewelry store. When he’d completed the manager training program, Daniel was recruited by

Kay Jewelers, also located in Glenbrook Square, and managed for that store for eight years. Working for Kay’s, Daniel moved frequently, managing stores in Illinois and Indiana, before ending up at a North Carolina location. Dan, originally from Decatur, and his wife Jane, a Leo native, decided it was time to move back home to northeast Indiana.
At this time, a friend of Dan’s, who had worked with him at Kay Jewelers, had a job at Gulley’s Jewelers in Fort Wayne’s Southtown Mall. He told Dan that there was an opening at his store if Dan wanted the job. Dan accepted the position. While Dan was employed at Gulley’s for four years, the thought of starting his own business began to grow, until he decided that this was the path he really wanted to take.
Opening Daniel’s Jewelers in Bluffton, Indiana, in the late 1990s was not easy, and Dan says that he did it on a sort of shoestring budget, at first.

Dan opened the store in a downtown location where his business would grow and expand over the next 16 years. Daniel’s Jewelers’ beginnings were very small, with Dan doing mostly repair work on jewelry. Today, Dan’s store is located on the north side of Bluffton in the Inter Urban shopping plaza, where he carries a range of jewelry, including designer bridal sets and wedding bands. Dan takes pride in the fact that, in his store, you don’t have to spend a ton of money to get something nice. If a customer needs a gift in the fifty-dollar range, Daniel’s has a large selection from which to choose. With the price of gold going through the roof, Dan has added new lines in different metals, such as sterling silver, Steel X (which is stainless steel), tungsten, titanium, and cobalt chrome, mostly used for men’s wedding bands. Dan carries a large variety of jewelry pieces from popular designers like Kate McCullar, Rego, Camelot, and Fantasy. He also sells Kameleon Jewelry, which has interchangeable faces that can be “popped” out and replaced with a different design. Dan says these pieces have been tested and have over 7,000 “pops” in them – and, that they hold tight until popped out for a new design. Daniel’s Jewelers also offers onpremises repair of most jewelry, ring resizing, custom-designed jewelry, and insurance appraisal services.

Dan is a qualified gemologist and acquired this degree through the Gemological Institute of America. He also apprenticed to become a goldsmith. With his training and experience, Dan can create brand-new designs, or he can repair or recreate damaged family heirlooms. In the process of custom designing jewelry, Dan uses wax modeling. First, he creates a design. Then, he carves a model of the design out of wax. Once the wax model is completed, Dan sends the casting off to be filled with gold. When the gold pieces are returned, Dan polishes them and assembles them to complete his original design. He also sets gemstones into custom pieces. Jewelry is usually very sentimental to people, but sometimes, customers want to alter a piece to make it more modern or more personalized. Working on and repairing people’s jewelry is something Dan really enjoys about his job. He says that sometimes, when he’s working on something, and it just isn’t going quite right, he puts it aside for a bit, and then comes back to it. He laughs. “It usually comes together, then. I just had to put it down for a minute and walk away.” While Dan doesn’t travel to different countries to find gems, he attends gemstone tradeshows and deals strictly with reputable vendors.

Think “HOME for Christmas...” better quality pieces, versus one that supplies larger stores. When Dan sells a piece of jewelry, he will back it up because he knows how well it was made. Holidays like Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day and Christmas are some of the busiest times of the year at Daniel’s Jewelers. The hardest seasons are the ones where few people are out shopping and don’t come into the store. Dan likes to stay busy and loves the seasons that bring in customers. Dan says he realizes that jewelry isn’t essential for survival. Jewelry is a luxury.
Surprise Someone with a Gift Certificate for the HOME!
But, his customers become repeat customers because he genuinely cares about them and wants to help them find something special for a loved one – without breaking the bank. He wants the item purchased to be meaningful to his customer and to the person who will receive it. Dan says that his job is “really cool” because he gets to be a part of all the “happy stuff” in life. Most customers stop in because they are celebrating a milestone or some other special occasion, such as an engagement or a birthday. Dan enjoys helping people find the perfect Christmas or birthday gift. The jewelry business is a fun business to be in, he says.
