A MAN’S LOVE FOR HIS FAMILY PROMPTS AN UNLIKELY CAREER MOVE Article & Photos by Tara Steffen
B
y definition, true love involves personal sacrifice. In fact, it is in those brief moments of greatest personal sacrifice that we see love in its purest form. And, we often find such loss repaid with something much more precious and fulfilling than what was sacrificed. This has
been the case for State Farm Agent Steve Rich of Decatur, Indiana. Steve was not always an insurance salesman. Actually, he admits that he really doesn’t like to sell, at all. A graduate of Taylor University, Steve once enjoyed his roles as biology teacher and

football and wrestling coach at Churubusco High School. But, with his wife Vicki staying at home with their children, Steve found he just couldn’t make ends meet on his teaching and coaching income. Putting his family’s welfare ahead of personal aspirations and dreams, Steve began to search for a different source of income. His cousin Kathy was married to
Greg Drake, a State Farm agent operating in Berne, Indiana. Greg told Steve that State Farm was looking to place another agent in the Decatur area. In 1980, Steve took a tremendous leap of faith and began a “scratch” agency with no policy holders, at first, and very limited draw on any income, knowing that the potential for future income surpassed his earnings as an

Need More Space? educator. But, how does one transition from education to sales? Not wanting to become the annoying salesman people avoided, Steve looked for a way to sell insurance without being pushy. So, he decided to start “teaching” insurance rather than “selling” it. Steve reasoned, If I can help other people get the insurance coverage they really want, then we’ll both be in a winning position. From the start of his new career, Steve chose to focus on listening to the needs of his clients, educating them on the options available, and letting them make the decision to purchase. As Steve’s business grew, State Farm eventually offered him an independent contract. For awhile, Vicki worked at the church they attended, but as the business flourished, Steve needed her help at his office more and more. When Steve and Vicki’s children were small and not in school yet, it was not uncommon for them to spend time at the office. So, even being employed outside his home, Steve still got to see his children quite regularly. Vicki could always do quite a bit of work from home, too, and didn’t always need to come in to help. This gave Vicki the opportunity to raise her children while still working. Steve says that they tried a baby sitter once, but it only lasted six months, and Vicki didn’t like it. Still serving customers from his Decatur office all these years later, Steve feels so fortunate to have Vicki working alongside him. Being married for 41 years has been good, the couple says, and they are both still in love with each other. Steve jokes that it takes that long to get used to a mate.

Vicki’s presence has been a huge blessing to Steve. He says that she adds so much to his office environment. Vicki is not licensed for sales, but she helps Steve with bookkeeping, setting appointments, answering the phone, making the office look nice, and offering the employees coffee and tasty treats. Vicki is very organized, and she says it used to “drive her crazy” that Steve wasn’t as orderly. He jokes that, until two years ago when Vicki started working full-time at the agency, the couple wasn’t able to work together because of their organizational differences. But, as the years have passed, they have both “matured,” and those sorts of things really don’t matter anymore. Steve appreciates all the support he receives from State Farm, as well. He feels fortunate to partner with this large company owned by its policy holders.

When Steve started in 1980, agents were not using computers. Nowadays, people tell Steve that his job should be easier because of the advances in technology, but Steve would disagree. The computer might make some things easier, but people do not. In this fastpaced world, some customers are much more demanding, and they expect answers and results immediately. Steve simply sees computers as tools to help run the business – and, to keep him a little more organized. Steve feels that he has the best staff and appreciates the friendliness of everyone there. The focus of Steve’s office is the customer and their needs, and he believes that when the customer senses this, they walk away satisfied. Melinda Sprunger has been working with Steve for 13 years. She is licensed in all areas of insurance, and Steve feels that she is very dependable. He says she adds an element of consistency to the office, and people often ask for her by name. Wanita Schaadt is also on staff. She came to work for Steve a year ago but has been a State Farm agent for 10 years. She happened to be living in Decatur, so Steve was happy to acquire her and her expertise. In a service business like this, Steve feels privileged to be able to be there for customers during difficult moments in life when unfortunate things happen to them. Life is always changing. Property is sometimes destroyed, and people pass away. Steve is glad to be there for people when unexpected losses have occurred in their lives. He feels it is a pleasure to be able to help out. He says it’s a very personal job, and he enjoys helping people get through the tough stuff. After 33 years, Steve is happy that he chose the insurance business.

HUSBAND AND WIFE PARTNERING IN HEALTHCARE FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS Article & Photos by Holly Wuebker

or Gerald and Lorraine Kaup, better known as Jerry and Lorri to friends and family members, working together is something they’ve done for over 30 years. Their story isn’t a typical “college romance,” though it did start during their days of pharmaceutical school at Ohio State University. The Kaups’ love was something more; it was a flourishing business opportunity that became
a family practice now serving many local communities. Six short months after graduating from pharmaceutical school and with the encouragement of family members, the Kaups decided to “run a business.” Their plan was to assist the local community by providing a “full-service retail pharmacy offering overthe-counter and prescription pharmaceutical
WVL February 2014 / 11
items, compounded medications, and gifts and collectibles” to area residents. The year was 1980, and the new Kaup Pharmacy was housed in historic Fort Recovery, Ohio – home to Jerry and new home to Lorri, previously from Parma, Ohio. They knew this would be a great place to raise a family, as well as establish a family-oriented business. The Kaups’ business has grown tremendously from its humble beginnings.
To ensure they provided the best and most affordable services to the community, the Kaups traveled to California for training and became certified in a “full-service home infusion division” in 1990. In 1994, they started compounding medications, and a short time later in 2001, they established a new facility in Versailles, Ohio. Doctors in Union City knew of the remarkable services that were being offered by the Kaups
and, in 2005, they convinced the couple to open another pharmacy in Union City, with the addition of “durable home medical equipment services.” Three short years later, they again expanded to an Arcanum, Ohio grocery store that held similar values and “served the community well.” Both Jerry and Lorri firmly believe in service and in getting “the highest quality of care available in a small town.” Their values have proven to be economically viable, and most would agree that area residents have a quality of life “you can’t get anywhere else.” This also rings true for the communities they serve directly, as well as more than two dozen counties in Indiana and Ohio where Kaup Pharmacy makes deliveries. As the Kaups built their business, they also raised a family. The couple now has four children and six grandchildren, and family is an utmost priority in their life. With new pharmacists in the next generation of family and extended family, serving others seems to be a way of life. The Kaups are definitely in the business of helping others and making a difference in their community. This is also true of the Kaups’ staff. They employ hard-working, dependable individuals and encourage training and professionalism. They enjoy seeing when employees can “grow and learn in their profession” and appreciate when their staff members assist in “making the mission statement talk.” This visible show of appreciation encourages employees, as well as customers. Currently, with fourteen pharmacists on staff and a variety of drivers, customer service representatives, and more, the Kaups are continually encouraging employees and assisting them in serving clients. A recent addition to Kaup Pharmacy has been their Enhanced Health program, which encourages individuals and selfemployed business owners to participate in their own preventative care. According to the Kaups, “the mission of Enhanced

Another service added recently is the KaupPac medication management, where they provide “organized, counted, packaged and labeled” medications straight to your door “for each time of the day, each day of the week.” This new technology allows customers to take their medications without having to categorize and date them, based on the variety of prescriptions each individual takes. Patients can lessen stress and save time by enrolling and “reduce the risk of drugrelated adverse health incidents by taking medications as prescribed.” Kaup Pharmacy also provides dependable home medical equipment (free delivery, set-up, and training), home IV services, specialty compounding, prescriptions, supplements, nutritional aid and more. One satisfied customer from Celina, Ohio, states, “From the moment my mother made the decision to come to Celina, you all have made such a positive impact in her healthcare! Thank you so much for the extra effort; it means a lot to us and my mother.” Kaup Pharmacy is more than your average drug-store. For owners, parents, and community members Jerry and Lorri Kaup, it’s not just a business. It’s “Caring for People like Family.”

eb Tumbleson, owner and operator of Engine House Quilt Shop located in downtown Berne, Indiana, found herself interested in the art of fabrics at a young age. Deb grew up in Berne and attended Adams Central. “Way back when I was a junior in high school, my grandma asked if I would
like to try to make a quilt,” she recalls. “So, she and I together sewed a quilt together, and it kind of gave me a hunger for fabric.” Several years ago, Deb was a manager at an office that was going out of business. Instead of mourning the loss of her job, she seized the opportunity in a positive way.

“Throughout my life, I’ve been buying fabric, not knowing what to do with it.” With the help and support of her husband, Deb purchased a building with the hopes of being able to open up a quilt shop. “It has been an amazing ride. For eight years, we’ve been open. It will be eight years in July.”
Family plays a large part in Deb’s shop. Her grandmother was the reason she fell in love with fabric, and her family continues to be a prominent part of the business. “I get to work with my mom and dad, which is wonderful. My dad cut fabric at Berne Furniture for 41 years, so he comes in and cuts quilts for people. My aunt, Carol Yoder,

They’re always coming in with new ideas, new projects. They teach me a lot about everything!” She continues, “The customers are my favorite part. Deb explains her shop duties. “Usually, when we come in and open, it’s mainly taking care of customers. We also have a lot of classes. If we have a class back there, that’s a responsibility. “Usually, the classes get done about four o’clock in the afternoon, but some go into the evening. Sometimes, we have evening classes, too.” Deb is in charge of prepping the room in which classes are taught by keeping it clean and comfortable.

Some of the products and services offered at the Engine House Quilt Shop include kits with the fabric necessary to make the desired product, help if you’re making a quilt, new sewing machines, and sewing machine repair. The repair service is a new addition at the quilt shop. Deb says, “We have a service guy. He’s very, very good. He can fix any machine. “He will clean, oil, adjust the tension, and change the needle for $69.98. He does a fabulous job, and he does it within a week.” The Engine House also participates in shop hops. Deb explains, “A shop hop is usually done with five or six other shops. If you go to all the shops on the hop, you end up with prizes, discounts, and coupons, and we give grand prizes to those who complete the hop. We have three scheduled in the spring.”

So it’s like this huge hug.” Deb says her vision for Engine House Quilt Shop goes further than the business angle. “This is more of a safe haven for people to come and let their hair down. It’s a place do something for a family member or a friend... feel good about yourself...share with others, connect...that kind of thing.” The quilt shop has grown a little more each year. “That’s only through God’s help,” Deb admits. “There’s no other way. I feel like I never know what each day is going to bring. But, it’s exciting to see what’s around the next corner. “And, I think I’ve grown a ton. Who knows what tomorrow’s going to be? But, whatever it is, I’m sure it’s going to work out. “I firmly believe that when a person says ‘yes’ to whatever God has in mind, sometimes that takes you down paths that you don’t expect. But, you’re never alone.

A Friend’s House Article by Tara Steffen
L
ove is meant to nurture, to grow, and to encourage…never to hurt. Life is sometimes hard, and hurt is inevitable, but relationships were never intended to be a source of pain. As executive director of A Friend’s House in Bluffton, Indiana, Pam Durdahl sees the lives of young women change almost daily. Her clients deal with issues of self-harm, eating disorders, pregnancy and/or depression.
The organization started out as a crisis pregnancy center, but it was soon discovered that most women not only needed help during their pregnancy, but after birth, as well. They typically returned to whatever unhealthy situation they were dealing with previously. Because nothing about their situation had been “fixed,” these ladies were often trapped in a cycle of negative circumstances. It was decided that something more long-term

should be available so women could remove themselves from those circumstances permanently and begin to heal. The current facility was donated to A Friend’s House in 2001, and with the help of over 400 volunteers and 31 churches, it was quickly transformed into a place of healing. Everything was designed to simulate a home environment so as to make it feel like home as much as possible.
Once a young lady completes an intensive and honest application, she is carefully considered before being accepted to the program. Once a resident arrives at A Friend’s House, all communication with the outside world is cut off for 30 days. This allows the resident to focus only on herself without pressure from any outside influence. It also gives her time to get to know the caring staff.
Residents learn to discern between safe and unsafe people – and, how to react if someone close to them is unsafe. Residents learn that they no longer need to be victims. Pam can tell numerous stories of young women and the pain they have fought to overcome. Most clinics only deal with the symptoms of someone’s behavior, but here, the staff help reveal the underlying source of the behavior. This is a terribly painful process, but at the same time, it’s the most healing

These young women may be dealing with any number of problems, from eating disorders to self-mutilation, and these behaviors usually stem from an abusive situation. During their stay at A Friend’s House, they learn about healthy relationships and about setting boundaries for themselves and, more importantly, for other people.

Once the assessment step is complete, that’s when the real transformation can begin. In the development stage, residents can come to terms with the real source of their problems.
W
Residents must follow a strict schedule at A Friend’s House, which paves the way for the formation of a healthy, new structure in their lives. Soon after their arrival, residents are assessed so that staff will be better equipped to assist them.
SMALL-TOWN FRIENDLY & EXCEPTIONAL PRICES
Security is fairly tight here with the staff keeping entry doors locked and the means to monitor anyone attempting to enter. The facility can house up to seven women at a time, each occupying their own room.
ILLSHIRE
During the assessment stage, the staff uses its time to get to know the residents better. The staff is very transparent. Being open and honest, staff members earn trust, and the residents can feel free to express themselves. Staff members are never shocked by what they hear.

Trained counselors are brought in weekly to talk with the residents. Group sessions are held several times a day, and homework is assigned. Each week, a resident is given a certain responsibility to complete, such as making sure all the bathrooms are neat and clean. The women are also required to keep their rooms tidy and their clothing laundered. Residents even learn to cook meals. For those who struggle with eating disorders, this is an extremely big deal. The kitchen is a very frightening place for them. Each month, residents receive twenty dollars to spend on whatever they like. They also go out to eat as a group at a different restaurant every month. During the Christmas season last year, residents attended the Nutcracker together. Most of these young women had never before experienced this sort of cultural enrichment. The women who stay at A Friend’s House tend to come from desperate backgrounds. That last time Pam reviewed statistics, 71% of the residents had come from physically abusive situations, with 74% of them reporting some form of sexual abuse. Often, the abuser is a father, step-father, brother, or boyfriend – someone very close to the woman. Pam says these are the most difficult situations to help with because for the women, this abuse is so embarrassing to talk about. In fact, while the program at A Friend’s House includes four stages of healing, some residents who have been abused can only get through

LEHMAN the first stage. This is usually the first time they have actually confronted the source of their problems. Sometimes Pam finds herself angry at the situations that bring women to seek shelter at A Friend’s House. She tears up at some of the stories that she has heard – stories that no one should ever have to tell. Pam admits that her staff doesn’t “fix” people; they only try to teach the residents and help to bring about some healing. The decision to make permanent changes is up to the resident. Even after graduation from the program, the staff is available to anyone who might need to talk. Pam recalls a teaching moment as she and a coworker worked together putting up some Christmas decorations in the dining area. The coworker suggested that the garland that Pam had just put up might look better somewhere else. Pam graciously moved the garland. A young resident watching them asked Pam in astonishment, “Did you hear what she just said to you?” The resident had difficulty understanding why Pam was not offended by her co-worker’s comment.

FAMILY BUSINESS SATISFIES THE SWEET TOOTH FOR GENERATIONS Article & Photos by Tara Steffen
H
eyerly Bakery, located in downtown Ossian, Indiana, has become a family tradition, handed down from father to son, now capably managed by a third generation of Heyerly men. Grandpa Heyerly opened the bakery in 1931. Today, Ron Heyerly and his three brothers are owners and operators of the bakery. The four Heyerly men work all through the night, baking and frying up their famous rolls and donuts.
Made-from-scratch bakeries are pretty rare these days. With most bakeries, the products are made somewhere else, then shipped to the store. Everything at Heyerly’s is made from scratch. His current position as baker is the only career Ron has even known. Even when he joined the U.S. Army, he worked in the army’s bakery in San Juan, Puerto Rico, immediately following basic training. While there, he ran the bread plant.
WVL February 2014 / 33
Since he already knew how to bake bread, Ron ascended to management quickly. Even as a private, his position in the bakery was above the higher-ranking officers working there. Having grown up in a bakery, he was experienced in every aspect and more knowledgeable than his fellow soldiers. While serving his country in Puerto Rico, Ron made about 4,000 loaves of bread a day with

just thirteen men under his employ. On the weekends, production increased to about 10,000 loaves. Nearly all the recipes used at Heyerly Bakery have been handed down from Grandpa Heyerly. A few have been added over the years – the soft sugar cookie, for instance. Ron’s grandmother made them at home, and some time ago, Ron attempted to copy the recipe.

It took a few tries before Ron got the recipe just right. Now Heyerly’s soft sugar cookies are very popular, and Ron says that his grandkids just love them. He recommends, “Try putting strawberries on top of our sugar cookie. It’s the best strawberry shortcake you’ve ever eaten.” The storage room at Heyerly’s houses 50-pound bags of flour, sugar, and every other ingredient required when baking. The shop operates three fryers and a glazer to help speed up the process. Ron says their kneading table is the original wood table his grandfather used when the bakery first opened. Heyerly’s also has an eight-tray revolving oven that came from an Archway cookie factory. Ron says that his father purchased it more than 50 years ago while Ron was still in the Army. The oven can handle 56 trays of rolls at a time. Ron is the one who maintains the oven. It’s so old, and no one else knows how to fix it. Ron says you never see people “standing in line to work at the bakery” because of the hours. He usually goes into work around one o’clock in the morning and works until eight. Weekend hours are longer because the bakery is much busier. According to Ron, being a baker is much like being a farmer. “You don’t just wake up one morning and decide you’re going to be one. Either you are a farmer, or you aren’t.

“It’s the same with the bakery business.” Ron’s schedule doesn’t bother him a bit. It’s just the way it’s been all his life. He says there’s nothing good on TV during the night, anyway, and he gets to play some golf during the day with his buddy. Ron’s wife Linda works at the bakery as a cake decorator. She helps to run the counter, as well. When asked how working with his wife has been, Ron laughs and says, “I don’t work with her.” He explains that she stays out front, and he stays in the back – and that has “worked out great” for many years.

The bakery in Ossian has many dedicated customers who come in on a regular basis. Some like to bring treats back to the office with them. Others might be having a party or ordering something special for their church dinner. It’s not unusual for someone to walk out with five dozen donuts at a time. Heyerly’s Bakery also attracts customers from all over the United States. Ron recalls one time when President Bush was in office with Dan Quayle as Vice President. Quayle traveled to Fort Wayne, and while there, he heard about Heyerly’s. Ron says Vice President Quayle actually sent a few members of his Secret Service detail down to Ossian for some rolls. They bought 15 dozen to take back to Washington, D.C. Ron says that Thanksgiving and Christmas are extremely busy times for the bakery. During Thanksgiving season, especially, Heyerly’s receives a lot of orders for pies. Ron estimates that they baked over 1,600 pies last November, all made from scratch. He laughs, “That’s a few.”

It’s not uncommon for long-distance customers to request Heyerly’s donuts and rolls be sent to them by mail. Ron doesn’t deliver by mail very often, as the rolls would likely be quite stale by the time they reached the customer a few days later. This didn’t matter to a man out in Montana. He used to live near Ossian and wanted some fried cinnamon rolls. He didn’t care how old they were when they reached him! Ron says the shipping on them was terribly expensive, but the customer was willing to pay it, just the same.

rownPointe Communities in Portland, Indiana, is just one of twelve locations spanning a tri-state area to serve local residents and senior citizens. Their motto is “Care You Can Trust.” CrownPointe’s mission is “to create and foster a continuum of care” for seniors that promotes and encourages the physical,
mental, emotional and spiritual well-being of each individual within a secure and affordable community environment.” Their community in Portland focuses on doing just that, while providing commendable services to its residents. living apartments and condominiums, and a majority of these facilities were established in 2002. Around this time, many Jay County seniors were relocating to other communities where assisted living housing was available. A group of concerned community members saw a need to keep these native seniors close to home. Longtime Portland physician Dr.
Eugene Gillum chaired the initial committee, comprised of several other Jay County residents, to bring CrownPointe Communities to Portland. The efforts of the community members paid off, as the facility is thriving today as it serves many local residents. Tess Hemmelgarn, who serves as executive director of CrownPointe in Portland, is a

Currently, there are 32 individualized apartments housed within the assisted living sector of CrownPointe in Portland. Only two of these apartments are currently available, due to the highdemand of area residents. Unlike a nursing home, CrownPointe housing is for independent seniors who would like company, or just a little extra care, as they go about their own personal daily routines. These residents have “their own apartments, daily activities, and bingo, and everyone pretty much comes and goes as they please.”

Previously an orthopedic nurse for Reid Hospital in Richmond, Indiana, Tess started with CrownPointe in Portland in September 2013. Her favorite part about working for the organization is getting to know the area residents. She also appreciates that it’s just “a great big family” at CrownPointe. Tess says CrownPointe is a place where “loved ones can go, and you don’t have to worry about them.” What’s more, it is a place “where loved ones have someone looking after them without being treated like they would be at a nursing home.” Individuals can still create and maintain their own schedules, while also participating in activities of all sorts while living here.

medications, get the proper nutrition and exercise on a daily basis. Tess believes that individuals should keep moving – that “if you don’t use it, you lose it.” And, in order to keep moving, it’s important to exercise daily. She adds that a person who continues an exercise regimen tends to stay motivated because exercise releases endorphins. “The more you sit, the stiffer you get,” Tess says, and if you can sit by a window where the sun is shining, do so. Every little activity like this helps to keep away those winter blues. These are just a couple of the ways Tess and her staff try to help residents – through encouraging exercise and promoting daily activity. The Portland facility also offers condominium units, which are still a part of CrownPointe, but on a completely different level. The condos are privately owned by individuals, and these residents receive no assisted living care. There is a condo association, which helps by providing trash pickup, snow removal and lawn care throughout the seasons. Residents do have access to emergency call buttons, just in case, but otherwise, they are completely selfsufficient. Call the CrownPointe community in Portland to schedule a consultation regarding your next assisted living visit or condominium purchase.

COUPLE PROVIDING THE COMFORTS OF HOME FOR MORE THAN A DECADE Article by Amy M. Orr

ore than a decade ago, Tom Hughes of Van Wert, Ohio, decided he and his wife Sherry ought to look into the bed and breakfast business. At the time, Tom was employed at Marathon Pipeline, while Sherry worked at a local factory. In late July 2002, the couple purchased an early twentieth-century Arts & Crafts

While trying to keep the historic beauty of the home intact, the Hughes embarked on a major renovation, including new plumbing, electrical updates, and fresh carpeting, paint and wallpaper throughout.
