A
visitor to Portland, Indiana coming from the west on Indiana 26/67 meets only a few businesses before coming upon an attractive building with a prominent sign out front saying, “Portana Travel, Inc.” Park your car in the paved lot and be guided to the building by posts and ropes evocative of a waterfront anchorage. Inside this very neat office, you will meet owner and manager, Debbie Shreeve. Look around this spacious room and view art and other items from all over the world, collected from the owners’ travels and as gifts from customers.
Debbie tells the story of how Portana Travel began as the brainchild of Debbie’s mother, LeVara Clifton. In February of 1986, Citizen’s Travel on Main Street in Portland was for sale to the highest bidder, and a disappointed LeVara wasn’t the winner. “Mom went home, thought about it, and prayed about it,” says Debbie. “The next day, I called and asked how she was doing, and she said, ‘How does Portana Travel sound?’ “I said, ‘What?’
WVL February 2015 / 5
“She said, ‘I’m going to start my own business, and God has told me I need to open it within two weeks.’
“This shocked mom because nobody knew she was going to start one. He said, ‘I have a place to rent on Meridian Street.’”
“Well, I knew this was going to be quite a struggle because we didn’t even have a place to open such a business,” says Debbie. “Mom then got a phone call, and a person said, ‘I heard you need a place to start your travel agency.’
Within the two weeks allotted, LeVara, her husband Richard, their son Rick, two daughters, Debbie and Amelita, and two sons-in-law got busy. Really busy!

Debbie recalls, “A lot of hours from family, and with help from our Delta rep at that time, we ended up opening in those two weeks like she was told by God to do.” LeVara, as co-owner with Richard, managed the business and looked to her daughters for help. Debbie had been working mornings as a church secretary. So, Amelita helped in the morning, and Debbie, in the afternoon. Amelita left the business after a couple of years. Debbie notes, with a laugh, “She went on to work in the medical field, finding it less stressful. “We had been in business on Meridian Street for about 10 years,” Debbie remembers, “when a girl stopped in one day and asked, ‘How long have you been here?’ “She saw the surprised look on my face and, somewhat embarrassed, said, ‘Really, I didn’t know you were here.’ So obviously, if you were in Portland looking for a travel agency, we were hard to find.” Fast forward to 1997 when Portana Travel moved to its present location on West Votaw Street (IN 67/26). Although Portana Travel feared it would be hard to attract new clients, the extensive reconstruction of Meridian Street in 1998 occasioned a diversion of traffic right past their new location. Debbie notes, “Out here with our sign and the traffic coming by, we picked up a lot of new business. Now, we weren’t hard to find.

“The sign in the window, Service With Understanding, gave us our motto,” she says. “We treat people as we want to be treated. That personal touch is the advantage of a hometown travel service.” The Internet has created competition in airline ticket prices. “However,” Debbie advises, “when people want a vacation, they don’t want it messed up. If they have a problem, they want a face to go to.

As one client exits Portana Travel, Debbie says, “The gentleman that just left is a repeat customer. He found airline tickets online, and he told me what the price was and what he wanted. But even with my service fee, I beat the Internet price.” Debbie often matches or beats Internet prices. “My service fee sometimes makes my price a bit higher, but people like to have someone to go to, and it is worth it to them. “I have faithful clients. I have a client that has been with me for several years who says, ‘I’m not doing any thing without you.’ If he needs to make changes, he knows I’ll take care of it. “I’ve got people with many different requirements who call me and tell me what they need. I take care of it, and off they go; they don’t worry about if something planned is going to be done. They know I’ll take care of it.” Debbie tells the story of the time about 12 years ago that US Airways employees were going to strike at midnight. “And, wouldn’t you know, it was at the start of spring break.” Some of her clients were scheduled to be on US Airways for flights, and a few were on travel packages. Without the help of a truly dedicated travel agent, they couldn’t determine when and if they would get a flight to their destination. Debbie remembers that episode clearly. “So, I was up all night waiting to see if they were going on strike, and if other airlines were going to step in and take their clients for them. This is what I did all

night, keeping in touch, ready to protect my clients.” She repeats, with emphasis, “I literally was up ALL NIGHT!” That’s “Service With Understanding.” Debbie enjoys working with people. “My job is different everyday, and I get to know people and their needs. We are full-service – I do everything: air, car, hotels, cruise, rail, tours, everything but Greyhound bus. I do group, individual, and business travel, as well as vacations, honeymoons, and emergency travels for funerals or births. “With people going to a funeral, I almost hold their hand. Or, I share their joy when they are traveling for the birth of a baby or for a honeymoon. I try to meet their needs. I’ve even prayed with people.” Debbie proudly says, “We are familyowned; we’re not a ‘big box’ store. I put everything together: airfare, transfers, tours of whatever you are doing, and trip protection insurance.” She pauses to mention that trip protection insurance is important. “Then, I put it all together in their documents and so things go in order when they are on their trip.” LeVara retired in 2009. Debbie says, “I am now the sole owner/manager with one employee – my daughter, Erin Toland, who does the bookkeeping and assists as I once did.”

Flowers, Candy and Other Gifts for Her – or Him!
Article & Photos by Sylvia Marbach

f you’re looking to purchase flowers, balloons, or a candy bouquet for a loved one this Valentine’s Day, Morningstar’s Dreams on Wings in Geneva, Indiana should be your first stop. While shop owner Melanie Morningstar and her youngest daughter, Charidy Toland, offer a selection of floral arrangements and gift items all year round, February 14th is undoubtedly the busiest day of the year for these entrepreneurs. Melanie spent her childhood on the family farm and helped out with the restaurant and filling station her late father had owned. “I
stood on Coke cases to reach the grill to turn hamburgers. “And, we used to pump gas for customers back in the day.” These experiences instilled in Melanie the know-how and drive that would someday enable her to be successful in operating her own business. Melanie’s decision to open a flower shop came from her natural affection for floral design, coupled with the persuasion of loved ones. “I had always enjoyed working with flowers, and I did some friends’ weddings,” she says.

We had no coolers. We had no flowers. We had nothing. “I was scared to death because we walked in with only these few things. But Charidy said, ‘Mom, have faith. Everything will fall into place.’ And, it did.” Melanie and her family purchased the products they needed from other flower shops that were going out of business, and they employed the help of others in building a walk-in cooler. Now, all they needed was a name for the shop. Since he’d provided the inspiration, Melanie wanted to name the business “Morningstar’s” after her late husband. Charidy had ideas, too. She says, “This is a dream come true; ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to have my own business. That’s why I added Dreams on Wings.” After two years in downtown Geneva, the ladies moved the shop to a location on Highway 27 north of Geneva – the very spot where Melanie’s father had operated his diner. Melanie explains, “When we started our business, my father had cancer. He said, ‘I want you girls to come out here so you’ll be close.” The family home was situated next to the old diner. “It took three or four months to renovate,” says Melanie. “It was neat to see the transition from a restaurant to a flower shop. My father was able to see it when it was finished.” The new location on a busy road proved to be a prosperous change, and it allowed Melanie to be close to her father in his last days. “That was the best thing we ever did because we’re right on the highway. It is a better location for us. “And, we can serve the same people we served years ago when they would come in to eat or to drink coffee.” Laughing, Charidy adds, “Sometimes, somebody will come in, slap the counter, and say, ‘I want a Hoosier Decker, flat fries, and a milkshake!’” Melanie continues, “The very first funeral arrangements we provided out here were

for a man who used to come and drink coffee at the diner. So, we’re still serving. “We’ve seen so many of our customers come and go. It’s an honor for us to serve them one last time.” The ladies at Morningstar’s Dreams on Wings specialize in fresh and silk floral arrangements, balloons, gifts, and candy bouquets. The shop offers wedding flower design, as well. Morningstar’s also provides an unusual memorial service. Charidy explains, “We do a lot of funeral work and casket sprays. But, we also deliver arrangements directly to gravesites at the cemetery. If there’s a stone or mausoleum, we’ll go out once a month and clean it up and refresh the flowers. “We have standing orders where we know, every year, we have to go and take care of the gravesite. I also maintain the two big pots in front of the funeral home in Geneva.”

Melanie says, “We do a lot of repair, too – even from other places. It really will keep the cost down for the customer because sometimes, we can just respray the flowers, and that will save them for another year or so.” Morningstar’s also offers gifts for any age or gender. “We stock NFL items,” Charidy adds. “We’ve got Colts and Steelers and Cowboys – we’ve got tons.” A Pittsburgh Steelers teddy bear with Morningstar’s balloon bouquet and candy might be the perfect Valentine’s Day gift for a middle school-age boy. Your mother might appreciate one of Morningstar’s candles and a handmade jewelry item. And, remember your departed loved one on Valentine’s Day with a memorial arrangement from Morningstar’s. “We just ordered our spring stuff – things to put outside,” Melanie says. “Bird baths...garden stakes. The ladies at Morningstar’s would like to expand their services to the younger crowd. “We want to get the kids to come in. We’ll help them out. If a young man comes in, and he wants to get his girlfriend a flower, but he only has four or five dollars...he will leave here with something.” Melanie says that Morningstar’s will “work with any amount.” She explains, “Somebody came in for help with wedding flowers that they bought at a dollar store, and we did not turn them away. “We said, ‘We’ll do what we can.’ They were so tickled.” Morningstar’s has continued its growth, becoming a popular choice for wedding flowers among the surrounding Amish community. The ladies plan to further expand their selection of NFL products, sympathy gifts, and concrete line. Charidy also hopes to teach a class at the South Adams Senior Center.

harlie Chaplin welcomes passerby and customers to Evans’ Fine Jewelry in downtown Portland, Indiana. Chaplin is featured in a stained glass design, standing tall in the front window amidst displays of attractive jewelry. Sandy Schwieterman says with a laugh, “Charlie is my security guard. “People from out of town have stopped in and want to know if he’s for sale, but he’s not.” Nevertheless, he does attract welcome attention.
Evans’ Fine Jewelry offers a wide variety of gold and silver watches, rings, earrings, necklaces, and pendants. Sandy is the owner and proprietor of Evans’ Fine Jewelry, which she opened in May of 1985 on Main Street in Portland. “I started on a shoestring,” she says, “with just a small amount of jewelry and gradually built my inventory up.” Sandy’s fascination with fine jewelry emerged at an early age. In high school, she

worked part-time in a jewelry store owned by the grandmother of a fellow student. Her husband Jack was the general manager of Createc in Portland. In September of 1985, just four months after Sandy opened her store, Jack died of a massive heart attack. “So, there I was with two children and had only the jewelry store to support my family.”
Within three years, the lease on the Main Street store was up, and Sandy purchased the current location on North Meridian Street and moved in. She soon developed a clientele of returning customers. “I think the relationships I’ve developed over the years are so important to me,” she says. Then, apparently realizing how many years
it has been, laughs at herself and says, “It’s kinda bad when a young person comes in and says, ‘My grandmother shops here.’” But, that’s what has made the store such a fixture in Portland and Jay County. Younger people, even with tastes a bit different from their grandmothers, have respect and love for the jewelry of their grandparents. In fact, one of the features of Evans’ Fine Jewelry is the jewelers’ skills in repairing and restoring family heirloom jewelry.

Evans’ Fine Jewelry provides a personal service not often found in “big box” stores. Sandy says, “We offer expertise in obtaining perfect pieces of jewelry.” When asked how she determines what will satisfy a customer’s desire for a piece of jewelry, Sandy steps back to consider her answer. “I’m not sure how I do it,” she muses. “I see what they are looking at and what they already have. If it is a boyfriend or husband, I ask, ‘What does she like to wear?’” Often, for those who are buying a special gift, Sandy goes to the display cases and presents items to them. Based on their reactions, she is able to narrow down their choices. “If they are buying for themselves, we assist them in the same way but are ready to provide a lot of custom work. “Each sale is individual,” says Sandy. “Each transaction, each visit is individual. It is real personal; jewelry is a real personal thing. “ Sandy is supported in her work by two jewelers, Jim Brewster and her son, Vince Ireland. They share the “back room” shop as they go about their crafts of design, repair, re-constructing, and creating.

Jim and Vince, when not serving in the showroom and working with customers, spend their days repairing jewelry, as well as designing and crafting custom-made pieces. The back room is a fascinating place, a space where creativity and craftsmanship are evidenced by neat workbenches and carefully maintained tools. Vince is the master of working with “lost wax” castings. He carefully prepares the wax models, which are then cast in precious metals at a local shop. In lost wax casting, the original wax model melts, or is “lost” within the mold as it is replaced by silver or gold. Dentists use a similar process in producing custom dental appliances. Jim has been with the store for 25 years. Both men have been trained in jewelry design, crafting and repair. Vince is a graduate of Gem City College in Quincy, Illinois. Jim’s father had a jewelry store in the same building on Meridian Street, beginning in 1945. Jim trained under his dad and his grandfather, learning jewelry-making and clock repair. Vince, of course, being Sandy’s son, began to learn his trade at an early age. Both men have also had training with master craftsmen. Proudly, Jim says, “It’s nice to have the opportunity to have a place like this in Portland. We’re pretty good at unique things that customers can’t get done anywhere else. “Just today, I’m going to make something unique for a customer – something that she has been unable to find anywhere else. A particular piece of jewelry had been in this customer’s family for years and, according to other jewelers the customer had previously contacted, it was beyond repair. “They just didn’t want to spend the time on it,” says Jim.

It is a pleasure to watch him work in his back room because it reminds the visitor of craftsmen of old who spent their lives in creative, delicate wizardry, working precious metals and stones into treasures for royalty.

Jim, always soft spoken, succinctly explains his attitude towards working with jewelry. “Every job you do, you have to put yourself into it, or you don’t succeed.”

“It is definitely satisfying to me to know that it doesn’t matter if it I am working on a $10,000 item or a $15 item. I treat them the same. I don’t want someone to bring something in and then not do the job for them that they expect.” Jim obviously finds satisfaction in producing quality work.

cakecrazy A Tasty Alternative to Valentine’s Day Chocolates
Article by Dee Fisher
I
think nearly everyone likes to eat cake. Probably, in your own lifetime, you’ve eaten portions of dozens of cakes–at birthdays, weddings, graduations, and holidays. Many of us remember Grandma’s baking, and some of us enjoy recreating those heirloom recipes–light, fluffy cakes; moist, dense cakes; cakes decorated with delicious icing; and cakes made into various shapes. In today’s busy world, most of us like to eat cake, but we don’t have the time, the talent,
or the inclination to learn how to make those cakes. That’s where people like Stacia Grose come to our rescue. Stacia is, by training, a nurse – someone who helps those who can’t help themselves. However, by preference, she is a baker – someone who takes the ideas of her customers and makes them into edible delights! Stacia has always enjoyed baking. Her family spent a lot of time in the kitchen, cooking and baking, so it was a natural thing for Stacia to try her hand at her own creations.
WVL February 2015 / 27
For Stacia, baking is the most interesting and creative of the culinary arts. Finding inspiration from television cake chefs, she gained more and more knowledge through online baking classes and videos, as well as simple trial and error. Her first really successful, elaborate creation was for her daughter’s first birthday. That started her thinking that, maybe, just maybe,
she could follow a dream of operating her own bakery. In May 2013, Stacia stepped out in faith and opened a storefront on Washington Street in Van Wert. Working mostly by herself, she began the city’s only true “cakery,” which she decided to call cakecrazy (yes, the lower case is intentional).

From her fully-equipped bakery, Stacia customized each customer’s order, using (now quoting from her informative brochure) “only homemade, freshingredient, never-boxed recipes to create new flavor combinations, as well as traditional tastes found in Grandma’s recipe box.” In January 2015, Stacia closed down her storefront on Washington Street, but she continues to operate cakecrazy on a order-only basis. What sort of cakes can Stacia make for you? Well, what sort of designs and flavors can you imagine? What does your special day require? How about: cakepops, cupcakes, dessert cakes, birthday cakes, or a one-of-a-kind wedding cake? Stacia can show you hundreds of styles, designs, and colors for your cake creation. Maybe you’ve seen an awesome cake on Pinterest or at a special event. Just bring Stacia a picture or describe what you have in mind, and she will create it for you! Stacia says that her favorite cake creation is usually the one she’s currently working on, but there have been a few memorable cakes she’s made that are standouts. Two of them, strangely enough, involve reptiles! When Jack Hanna, of Columbus Zoo and television fame, came to the Niswonger Performing Arts Center for a personal appearance, Stacia was asked to make a cake for the reception. Using photographs, she created a “snake cake” – a curled viper that looked ready to strike at any moment! The other “reptile” creation was a child’s birthday cake. This boy loved two things: alligators and the Los

Angeles Lakers basketball team. So, Stacia shaped an alligator wearing a Lakers jersey for his special day. That’s something not soon forgotten, and almost too cool to eat! A quick glance at Stacia’s Facebook page and website will show you the extent of her creativity. There are cakes shaped like Mickey and Minnie Mouse, teddy bears, guitars, tractors, the “Frozen” landscape, and even a minion from the “Despicable Me” movies. Wedding cakes, with layers of all sizes, matched to wedding colors are possible – even wedding “cakes” made with groupings of cupcakes. Stacia says that she loves the challenge of creating the most different and unique cakes for her customers. Cupcakes are all the rage in larger cities across the country. Well, they’re also the “in” thing at cakecrazy! Stacia makes cupcakes in three different sizes: mini, regular, and jumbo (and they are quite jumbo!). Of course, these are available by special order. There are eight regular flavors available (for all products), which include the staples like vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and some

more unusual ones, such as red velvet and birthday cake. However, for both cupcakes and regular cakes, Stacia currently offers over forty different flavors, including Mountain Mint (using Andes mints), Brutus (chocolate and peanut butter), Hot Fudge Sundae, S’mores, In a Jam (peanut butter and jam), Butterscotch, Chai Latte (using spices found in the drink), Neapolitan, Florida Keys (key lime), and Cookies & Cream. Some more unusual flavors are: Maple Bacon (bacon pieces mixed in maple batter with maple buttercream icing and a piece of candied bacon on top); Jimmy Buffet (vanilla infused with lime and tequila, with tequila buttercream icing and a lime peel on top); and Chocolate-Covered Pretzel (chocolate, frosted with chocolate buttercream, rolled in pretzel crumbs and topped with a chocolatecovered pretzel). Customers can order specialty cakes, sheet cakes in four sizes, and any of the three sizes of cupcakes by the dozen. If you would like a variety of baked goods, ask Stacia about her “sweets bar” packages. In a sweets bar, you can get from 100 to 500 pieces for your guests

MASTERSON’S

Attire for a Romantic Dinner or Other Occasion
Article & Photos by Andrea Peterson
T
he era of grand storefront window displays has, perhaps, passed away. But, while many Main Street businesses across the nation now struggle to survive, Masterson’s Clothing holds a stalwart position on Market Street in downtown Bluffton, just as it has for the past 88 years. After meeting Dick Mayer, owner and president of Masterson’s, it is no wonder Masterson’s has survived the invasion of the big box store. His attire, impeccable, lends an air of yesteryear – a stark contrast from the yoga pants-wearing
society we are now accustomed to (I’m guilty of sporting the same casual active-wear!). Dick is obviously no stranger to tying a fourin-hand necktie knot. I’ll bet he even knows the proper way to wear an ascot! As I enter the shop around 9 o’clock on a chilly morning in January, Dick is already hard at work, taking down Christmas decorations. As he greets me, I take a look around the store (which I’m seeing for the very first time. After all, it is a men’s clothing store.)
WVL February 2015 / 33
The long, narrow shop reminds me of my childhood. I recall taking my mother’s hand as we entered a shoe store downtown so I could be fitted for school shoes or as we stepped into a children’s clothing store. Whether it’s the location or the layout, Masterson’s Clothing has the same feel as these long-forgotten shops from my childhood.
Surprisingly, the building housing Masterson’s has continuously served as a menswear store since 1883. Masterson’s-Tindel was established in 1927 and continued operations until 1958, when Mr. Tindel passed away. At that time, Mr. Masterson purchased the remaining interest and dropped his former partner’s name from the business.

Just as Masterson’s has a history, so does its owner, Dick Mayer. He began working at the menswear shop in 1967. After about nine years, Dick took a job at Brooks Menswear. Nearly a decade later, he returned to Masterson’s and purchased the business.
HONEGGER, RINGGER & CO. Certified Public Accountants Business Services
Dick decided the change in ownership didn’t necessitate a name change. “It had worked well,” he explains. “I just kept it the same.” Over the years, however, Dick says that his inventory has changed quite a bit. Fashion has evolved, and the market is very different. “It is a dress-down society,” Dick points out. “This has affected our business. “Now, it seems like people only need a suit when they are in a hurry.” To meet that occasional need for more formal attire, Masterson’s specializes in full suits, sport coats, and shoes. The shop also carries more casual men’s clothing and accessories. For the most special occasions, Masterson’s offers complete tuxedo rentals as an Exclusive Retailer/ Elite Dealer for Jim’s Formal Wear.

When choosing a suit, says Dick, the most important thing to consider is getting a proper fit. This is something the typical discount store is not equipped for. “With the big box stores, you are on your own,” Dick warns. In contrast, Masterson’s has a full-time tailor on staff, in addition to four parttime employees. “Personal service is what sets us apart from the big box stores. We tailor everything one-on-one. “We can get you measured this morning and have things ready for you to pick up this afternoon – quick turnaround and great personal service.” Like most retail establishments, Masterson’s is especially around the major holidays.

Masterson’s remains an old-fashioned store - though Dick keeps things up-todate with the current styles - and the shop does not have a website or Facebook page. velocity motors The Biggest Valentine’s Day Surprise of All?
Article & Photos by Andrea Peterson
I
f the traditional gifts - flowers, candy, jewelry, etc. - fall far short of expressing how you truly feel this Valentine’s Day, maybe you need to think bigger...and faster. Perhaps your sweetheart deserves a gift that offers both personal freedom and dependability. Maybe your Valentine needs a new car.
Kelly Automotive in May 2009. He had previously gained a lot of on-the-job experience while working as a general manager at Courtesy Motors in Decatur. Over the past few years, Steve has shaped the business of Velocity Motors, aiming not only to build a profitable car dealership, but a place where customers’ automotive dreams can come to fruition.
If this is the case, be sure to see Steve Feasel, owner of Velocity Motors in Bluffton, Indiana. He’ll search high and low to locate the vehicle that’s just right for your special someone.
According to Steve, most of his inventory is secured through the Internet. He says having the ability to search online also gives him the advantage of being able to check vehicles’ values on various websites to assure that he is getting the lowest price. In turn, Steve and his staff are able to offer their buyers low prices.
Having been employed in the auto sales industry since 1978, Steve purchased Velocity Motors from
WVL February 2015 / 37
The Internet also allows Steve to conduct a background check, of sorts, on the vehicle to verify its history - i.e., how many owners a vehicle has had, whether or not it has been involved in an accident. A smaller portion of the inventory at Velocity Motors comes from customer trade-ins. So, what sets Velocity Motors apart from the multitude of car lots that can be found just by

driving down Main Street? For one, says Steve, customers at Velocity Motors don’t have to “settle for what is in front of them.” In fact, the company employs drivers that have traveled up to 600 miles to bring a vehicle to the inventory lot. For instance, if a customer is set on purchasing a particular make and model with very specific options, and this exact vehicle is not currently

among the inventory, Steve immediately sits down at his computer, searching for the right make, model and options. Upon locating the right vehicle, Steve can make the purchase and send his driver to retrieve it. What if, when Velocity Motors’ driver picks up the vehicle and drives it to Bluffton, the customer doesn’t like it, after all, or it isn’t exactly what the customer had in mind? There is absolutely no pressure to buy that vehicle, says Steve. This is another example of what sets Velocity Motors apart from other dealerships. Steve does have plenty of help from his staff. His employees include a few retired gentlemen who drive to pick up vehicles for him, as well as three sales professionals: Chad Eltzroth, Brad Schwartz, and Steve’s son, Kramer. Wes Chaffins keeps the detailing shop operating smoothly. Steve’s wife, Vanessa, also works at the dealership, making it a real familyoperated business. How does an auto dealership stay afloat, even in a slow economy? The keys to success, Steve says, include “building a customer base, establishing a reputation for standing behind your business, and treating customers with respect.” He also prides himself on “quality cars at value prices.” Steve continues, “After being in the car business for 35 years, I have learned the importance of taking care of both employees and customers. I’m fortunate to be able to start my own business from scratch, to choose the inventory I want, and to study it.” Velocity Motors is also an active supporter of the community. Steve’s company is a member of the Wells County Chamber of Commerce and contributes to such local causes as: the Wells Community Boys and Girls Club, the Wells County YMCA, and each of the high schools in Wells County.

back 40 junction One-of-a-Kind Valentine’s Day Dining Experience
Article & Photos by Andrea Peterson
W
ant to treat your sweetheart to a unique dining experience this Valentine’s Day? Back 40 Junction, located in Decatur, Indiana, may be just the experience you’re looking for! Before stepping foot inside the building, you’ll see, as the website touts, “Back 40 has personality.” John Ferrise, district manager, assures that Back 40 is “a great place to treat your significant others.” Even after 35 years in the restaurant business (15 of those with Azar, Inc., corporate owner of Back 40 Junction), John says he still enjoys dining at the Decatur eatery.
“My personal favorite is the All-You-Can-Eat Crab Legs on Friday nights. When I sit down for a meal here, there’s so much to take in. Every time, I see something different – something I hadn’t noticed before.” Back 40 Junction’s motto is: “The way it was is the way it is.” And, the way it was began in the early 1950s, when Clete Miller leased a building at the corner of Nuttman and 13th streets in Decatur. The location had previously operated as Swearinger Dairy Ice Cream and Malt Shop, and today, the site is home to McDonald’s.
WVL February 2015 / 41
Clete quickly adjusted the existing business model, creating a full-service restaurant he called “Fairway.” Fairway featured comfort foods, such as prime rib, home fries, and beef stroganoff, but also served specialty items, including oysters on the half shell and smoked fish. With the name and menu changes came decor changes, as well. Clete purchased a very
large, vintage Tiffany Chandelier from a Fort Wayne estate to hang in the restaurant. This was the first of many antique and historicallysignificant “artifacts” that would find a place in the decor at Clete’s restaurant over the years. In the 1960s, Clete added the farm decor, including the farm animals that still “graze” outside the restaurant at its current location. The restaurant name evolved, too, around

this time, and the establishment became known as Fairway Back 40. Clete also began serving a family-style dinner that eventually became the famous buffetstyle smorgasbord served today.

He added a player piano to entertain guests waiting to be seated on Friday and Saturday nights. Clete’s collection of decorative artifacts grew further to include a number of American heritage items. In 1974, the restaurateur decided an expansion was in order. Clete built a new facility with greater seating capacity, located a few blocks further north on 13th Street. He chose to use a vintage American railroad theme, purchasing a 1920s club car and an 1890s caboose to display outside the new restaurant. Thus, Clete altered the business name slightly to fit the new theme, calling his new place “Back 40 Junction.” Back 40’s interior decor has grown over the years to include a number of artifacts with local significance. For example, a pastel painting on one wall depicts the “old Walpert farm,” located on U.S. 224, which provided some of the ceiling beams and wainscoting inside the restaurant. A large brass bell on display once signaled atop Decatur’s first fire engine. And, the rare three-light brass chandelier came from the Fort Wayne home of movie star Carole Lombard, the wife of Clark Gable. Today, the restaurant’s dinner buffet includes: Salad Bar; Swedish Appetizer Bar, with its delicious meatballs, cheese, soups – and my favorite, yeast rolls with cinnamon butter; and Hot Buffet that offers a multitude of meats, including the famous prime rib, roast beef, ham, shrimp, and more, as well as “freshcooked farm vegetables.” Friday night’s

While he stepped out of the business around 1980 and sold Back 40 Junction to Azar, Inc. approximately seven years ago, much of Clete Miller’s vision is still intact. John Ferrise points out, “When you have a gem, why change that?” And so, at Back 40 Junction today, “the way it was” is still “the way it is.” Back 40 Junction is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner: 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday; and, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays. Reservations are available by phone - and strongly recommended for Valentine’s Day dinner!
