Bank of Geneva:
Stability–For Better or For Worse Article by Jaci Gorrell
T
he foundations of any business that has survived for more than a century are typically vital to its continued success and growth. As the Bank of Geneva approaches 134 years of customer service, it is clear that its historical roots have played a key role in the bank’s local longevity. The Bank of Geneva was first established in 1882 in response to an oil boom upon the discovery of the Trenton oil field. Andrew Briggs, Bank of Geneva president, explains, “The oil business was flourishing around here because the technology was readily
available, and it was easy to get oil at that time. “There was a lot of commerce, and with commerce came the need for banking services: deposits, paying bills, writing checks, and so on.” When the demand for banking increased, a man by the name of Charles Porter—husband to the renowned Indiana author Gene Stratton-Porter— decided to take matters into his own hands. Briggs adds, “He ran a drug store, and in his drug store, he had a safe. He started doing

banking out of the safe.” Porter utilized personal funds for the endeavor, and while his methods satisfied some of the local commercial needs, the oil business continued to expand, and with it, the need for more diverse banking. To g e t h e r w i t h D a v i d Studebaker, W.H. Niblick, R.B. Allison, S.W. Hale, George Hartman, A.G. Briggs and other area businessmen from Geneva and Decatur, Por ter expanded his business and founded the Bank of Geneva. The bank prospered in the years following its establishment. A. G. Briggs, Andrew Briggs’s great-grandfather, worked alongside Porter as the bank thrived. When the Great Depression rocked the nation in the 1930s, the Bank of Geneva not only witnessed history but also made history. In the midst of the failing bank crisis in America, President Franklin D. Roosevelt enacted a three-day bank holiday and chose to reopen only the most reliable and stable banks on the first day after the banking hiatus. The Bank of Geneva was among the throng
of the few banks that were deemed steady and trustworthy enough to reopen on the first day. Briggs says of Bank of Geneva’s reliability, “We were a very conservative bank. It was run by my grandfather at the time, and he was a well-respected banker. He didn’t have any risky loans.”

Notably, the Bank of Geneva was able to carry its customers through the financial highs of the local oil boom and the financials lows of the Great Depression with its long-lasting stability. In addition to the business’s rich history of unwavering service, the Bank of Geneva has been historically managed by the descendants of A. G. Briggs. Current president Andrew Briggs, a fourth-generation banker, says that growing up in the bank heavily influenced his decision to pursue a career in banking. He recalls, “I started when I was about six. We used to count coins for my grandfather on Saturday mornings, so I basically grew up inside the bank.” During his 43 years of service at the Bank of Geneva, Andrew Briggs has seen the business pass several milestones in its growth. When he first joined the Bank of Geneva in the 1970s, the bank had branches in Geneva, Berne and Monroe. Today, the bank has 5 total locations with the added establishment of branches in Portland and Decatur.

Not only did Briggs watch the Bank of Geneva grow geographically, but he also witnessed the bank’s assets multiply. Briggs states, “We have about tripled in size. I can remember the day that we went over $100 million. And now, we’re over $200 million. We just keep growing—about ten-percent a year!” Though large corporate banks may see more capital than this and seem to have their own perks, Briggs, an experienced small-town banker, knows the benefits of a close-knit communal bank setting outweigh that of a larger operation. “We’re a community bank. We’re a world apart from a large Chase Manhattan bank, for example, because we know our customers.

“They’re not just a number to us. They’re people we see on the street and have known for a long time.” Briggs continues, “We are also not as boxed in. We have some flexibility that bigger banks don’t have. Decisions are made here, not off in California. And, we can get to know people and can get a sense for what products we can tailor to their needs.” However, according to Briggs, the primary difference of the Bank of Geneva experience lies in its service. “We try to find the needs of our customers and fill those needs. More than half of our customer base is Amish, so that presents a particular set of needs that we have to identify and figure out how to accommodate with the current regulatory standards. “Big banks just say, ‘This is our product, and that’s what you have to live with,’ but we try to meet the needs of the people that we take care of.” From its historic origins to its longlasting prosperity, the Bank of Geneva has been offering its customers quality

AN Metal Sales & AN Construction:
Metal Roofing & More by Amish Craftsmen Article by Beth Steury
W
hile you may not be familiar with AN Metal Sales of Berne, Indiana, owner Noah Schwartz says that 2015 was a busy year for his company. AN Metal Sales, established in March 2012, is an extension of AN Construction—a family business named for Noah and his father Amos. While AN Construction projects have included installation of various kinds of roofing, AN Metal Sales focuses on the manufacturing and installation of metal roofing, siding and trim. Even as little as five years ago, metal roofing on residential homes was not a popular choice in the area.
However, in more recent years, the advantages of metal roofing—namely, its durability—have won over a number of homeowners. (AN Metal Sales’ roofing, siding and trim carry an astounding 40year warranty.) The growing popularity of metal roofing is what spurred the younger Schwartz’s decision to delve into this expanding field. AN Metal manufactures 29-gauge metal into a variety of roofing and siding products, available in 18 different colors. “We can ready the materials for a home roofing project in about an hour,” says Noah.

AN Metal Sales has expanded several times from its humble beginnings in the red barn that sits next to the large shop and office facility currently used. The business is located on the farm where Noah resides with his family.

If a textured metal is chosen, the cost will typically increase by four to five hundred dollars. When asked about the use of metal roofs on new construction homes, Noah indicates there is some interest locally. This trend has caught on in other communities and is expected to gain popularity in this area, as well, in the future. March through January tend to be busy for AN Metal Sales and AN Construction, while the month of February usually brings a slower pace that allows them to catch their breath. “But it all depends on the weather,” Noah says. “We’ve roofed lots and lots of houses this year.” AN Construction’s crew is available for jobs outside the area, as well. Noah says his crew once roofed a home 100 miles from Berne.

Noah spends the majority of his time quoting jobs in the community and surrounding area, scheduling installations and taking advantage of fishing adventures along the way. Several full-time employees work in the shop, “roll-forming” sheets of metal from large coils of steel on a gaspowered Acu-Form roll former. Most of the trim is molded in the shop on a press brake. A separate crew, with the assistance of a driver, performs the installations. “Ninety-nine percent of our jobs are roofs for homes. We wrap barns, as well, but roofing homes is our specialty.” The reputation of AN Metal Sales’ quality product and its reliable service continues to build the business. During the busy season, a 42 thousand-pound semi-load of steel is delivered to the business each week. AN Metal Sales purchases steel from two different suppliers. While much of

Another arm of this growing company is the sale of manufactured siding, roofing and trim to an expanding number of area contractors. "Every year, it grows,” says Noah, referring to the expanding pool of contractors who purchase materials from AN Metal Sales. Noah encourages anyone considering the advantages of purchasing locallymanufactured metal roofing, siding or trim to stop in to see the color and product samples at their rural location near Linn Grove. Truly Divine Bread Co:
Bakery, Deli and Internet Cafe Article by Dee Fisher
D
o you remember the line from a children’s nursery rhyme that says, “Do you know the muffin man who lives on Drury Lane?” Well, here in Van Wert, we don’t have a muffin man—it’s a muffin lady, and she works on Main Street! In December 2014, Melody Hileman opened a brand new bakery in the former Butler Bakery building on Main Street. Word soon got out (as did the delicious smells emanating from the store front), and a little over a year later, business is booming!
The artist behind all this is Melody, a graduate of culinary school in Fort Wayne. Melody hails from Mercer County, Ohio, where she grew up on a dairy farm. “I have always enjoyed cooking and baking,” Melody explains. Her love of food took her to study kitchen arts at Ivy Tech, where she had more formal training in cooking, and especially, baking. “I was told at school that I could have been a straight-A student if I’d have applied myself

to the book work,” Melody smiles. “We had lots of reading to do about how the great chefs worked, and classroom time with that. I did alright on that, average grades. “But, I was always better at the labs, where the teachers gave us trays of ingredients for a full-course meal, and we had to prepare something from it. Then, I got perfect scores!” It was through all this training that Melody learned that while cooking is an art, baking and pastry work are true sciences. “Ingredients have to be measured exactly and added in the proper order and with proper technique, and then baked carefully at set temperatures. “One little miss, and your beautiful cake or pie or other pastry turns into a messy lump,” Melody says. After school, Melody worked in several places as a baker and a cook, including Clyde Evans, Scott’s Foods, and the Tasty Twirl. “Working
at various bakeries really taught me the ins and outs of the business.” But, after eight or nine years of this, Melody left the food service altogether and drove

a delivery truck for her brother’s business. “One day, someone told me that Pick ‘N Save in Van Wert needed help in the bakery, and that I should work there—not drive a truck!” she laughs. “They thought my talents were being wasted.” So, she applied for the job and worked in the deli/bakery for a year. “Unfortunately, Pick ‘N Save closed about a year after I started,” Melody recalls. “I thought about creating a home baking business, but my family convinced me not to do that. Nobody wanted people running in and out of the house, I guess!”

“It was crowded with boxes of old inventory and bakery stuff. It took us a year from purchase until we could open our store,” she says. The plan was to have a store that was both a deli and a bakery, to serve not only sweets but also savory food cooked on the premises. As of this writing, the store, open for both breakfast and lunch, is much more than a bakery. Truly Divine’s Facebook page bills it as “a bakery, a deli, and an internet café.”

Family Ford of Bluffton:
Where Customers are Family Article by Kristi Searles
B
ack in the 1950s, Todd Remschisel’s parents established a full-service gas station in downtown Bluffton, Indiana. In 1969, they moved to the north end of Bluffton and transitioned to a Ford dealership known as Reimschisel Ford. Todd’s love of cars first began when he was a child, as his parents operated the fullservice gas station. “Ten years later, when my parents bought the Ford dealership, I began spending as much time as I could in the shop. “I remember my dad plopping me in the snowplow when I was ten or eleven years
old, and after plowing, I would run back down to the shop,” laughs Todd. “I have always liked mechanical things.” As time passed, Reimschisel Ford remained in the family, with Todd becoming the secondary owner. Many years later, Todd says, “I knew I didn’t want to take it all on by myself when my parents exited the business, so I partnered with my life-long friend, Mike Mangold.” On August 22, 2014, Reimschisel Ford became Family Ford of Bluffton. “Two families came together to equal one new family for the Bluffton community—Family

Fo r d ,” To d d e x p l a in s . Together, Todd and Mike devised a business plan and came up with the acronym “F.A.M.I.L.Y.” to represents everything they wanted for Family Ford (including Faith, Attitudes, Mission, Lead, and You). The first challenge that Mike and Todd faced was transitioning primar y ownership out of the family. “It took a long time for Ford to accept the establishment of Family Ford.” Ford Motor company is one of the only companies in the auto industry that is still family-controlled. Most other companies are owned by stockholders. For tunately, Todd and Mike recalled a time when Ford Motor company was headed by Bill Ford, who was struggling in the business. Bill chose Alan Mulally to run Ford Motor Company. Mulally had brought Boeing Commercial Airplanes out of the depths of despair and raised them to new heights. Bill then took the second seat in the company, and Alan proved to be a successful leader.
“That’s how we approached Ford,” Todd recalls. “We used the same design that Ford used to make our plan work.” Todd hoped to put together a company structure that would honor his parents, remain customeroriented, last a lifetime, and keep God’s Word as the foundation of the business.

“I didn’t have any experience in running a business, and I am much more service-oriented than sales. Mike is much more sales-oriented. We’ve had a good 20 years of sharing ideas.” Family Ford of Bluffton is a full dealership that only sells what it is capable of servicing. The inventory includes new vehicles, along with a selection of pre-owned vehicles on the lot. “We will even go out of state to locate and pick up a car that meets our customers’ needs,” Todd says. Family Ford aims to please and will purchase other manufacturers’ brands for its customers. However, the dealership strictly buys factory-direct or one-owner vehicles. “All of our vehicles are thoroughly inspected and we certify them,” he adds. The service department at Family Ford offers pickup and delivery. An employee will pick up the vehicle to be serviced and deliver it back to the customer’s home afterwards. Family Ford even offers loaner cars to their customers while a vehicle is being serviced or is out of commission. “We know how inconvenient it can be to not have a car,” Todd confirms, “even for a few hours. We know that Bluffton is more of a family center, and most people work out of town.” If it is more convenient, a Family Ford employee will drop off a customer at the YMCA or the grocery store while their car is being serviced. “We make sure our customers needs are met and that they are treated like family.” In February, Family Ford will promote for Valentine’s Day and cater more to the women in the community. The staff decorates and tries to create a romantic mood on the sales floor.

“Color and options are a huge deal to the women. Most of them seem to prefer whites, blues, and earth shades.” It isn’t unheard of for husbands to stop and purchase for their spouses. Todd recalls, “One time, an older gentlemen bought matching Lincolns for himself and his wife. He had them delivered with bows. “We will do bows and delivery any time of year!” smiles Todd. “We love making deliveries like that. It’s fun!”

“Last year, we placed flowers around our sales floor for the women. Sixty percent of our buyers are women,” Todd reports. Most of these women are looking for “people movers.” They are always thinking of the family and what will best meet the family’s needs.

Todd says that Family Ford has been blessed with many repeat customers. “I really think that our people are what make our customers come back. “We have to make a profit, but taking care of our customers is our top priority. We think ‘How many times are we going to serve the customer?’—not, ‘How much are we going to make?’ “Long after the purchase, owners will return for service and advice many times. I always tell my customers to buy where you know you will be taken care of for life.”

1 Shot Sports:
Wide Selection of Firearms & Accessories Article by Jim Kirkwood
I
n downtown Portland, Indiana, a shop known as 1 Shot Sports is situated just one block east of Meridian Street. Owner and manager Dustin Bantz, as classy and straightforward a guy as his well-designed logo might suggest, offers a wide range of guns and accessories in his brightly-lit store.
shotguns. He is willing, almost anxious, to talk about the various features of the guns he carries. His customers visit the store as much for information as they do for purchasing new guns, ammunition, and any of the wide variety of holsters, cleaning supplies, decoys, and trail cameras.
“We’ve been here almost four years,” said Dustin. “Guns have always been a hobby of mine, and it’s always been something I’ve loved.”
1 Shot Sports carries hunting-type guns, as well as multi-purpose guns. “You won’t see this many center-fire bolt action rifles in very many shops nearby,” Dustin assured. These are often of a larger caliber, which often don’t meet Indiana hunting regulations for deer.
Dustin is a very personable young man with a wide knowledge of rifles, handguns, and

“We have a few hundred guns in stock,” he added. “Actually, I’m a little down at the moment. We try to keep a good variety of stuff, which is what other places don’t seem to do. “Some of them will have a lot of one sort. Many gun shops will have AR-15— military style guns. I try to mix it up a bit more and have a larger selection of all types of firearms. Dustin provides lots of help, technical information, and advice for his customers. That kind of personalized expertise is not so easily found in the “big box” stores, where a salesperson might not have the kind of background, interest and experience that Dustin commands. The gun store thus fills a niche in the busy downtown area of Portland. “It’s worked out decent so far,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of good local support. In the past, there have been a couple of small gun stores around here, but it has been a while since they’ve had a real gun store nearby.”
As we talked, this writer relied on his own distant past as a hunter and rifle enthusiast to explore with Dustin the current scene of rifles, pistols, hunting regulations, and ammunition reloading. The world of shooting

has changed quite a bit in the past 50 years! I felt youthful again, talking about long-forgotten rifle calibers, detailed re-loading information and so on. Dustin really had my interest! At one point, he offered, “We’ve talked about several things this morning, just as I do with customers who come in with questions or problems. Like if you’ve mounted your scope wrong, and we get it fixed up for you, it costs you little or nothing—regardless of whether you bought it here or not.

“It’s just that local customer servicetype atmosphere. That’s the real advantage of coming to a store like this.” To prepare for writing this article, I went to Outdoor Life, the magazine all hunters read when I was young. Now, it is online! Reading a few hunting stories helped re-create for me the enthusiasm I used to feel on hunting trips. I no longer have the desire to shoot the deer that run so beautifully through the woods and fields surrounding my home, but my interest in guns has been re-awakened by Dustin after viewing the rifles and other guns in 1 Shot Sports. One of the stories online was about a girl who accompanied her dad on her first hunting trip at age nine. There were always some women hunters and shooters when I was young, and now the fairer sex can choose from a number of colorful and smaller handguns, obviously created for women who might be turned off by heavier, darker guns. A Henry .22 rifle was among the advertised specials at 1 Shot Sports. “The Henry lever actions are popular right now,” said Dustin. Henry rifles

Dustin noted, “Henry is an old name, but these are completely different guns than the former Henry items. They started with the .22 models, but now they have branched out into bigger calibers—.44, .45, .357, and calibers like that.” Dustin’s enthusiasm for guns and his wide-ranging knowledge about them obviously result in a large number of customers visiting his store. As we neared the end of our early-morning conversations about guns, hunting, and hunting regulations, the first customer of the day peeked in the front door. He called in to ask, “Are you open?” Dustin was familiar with him and casually said, “C’mon in, and turn that ‘Closed’ sign on the door to ‘Open.’” When asked if he were a regular customer, the man laughed and said he “just came in to give Dustin a hard time.” Then, the pair discussed the gun he had bought just a week ago. Dustin’s openness to that customer, and his obvious enjoyment in dealing with the man’s gruffly humorous personality is probably a strong factor in the store’s success.

Currently, the hotel is bank-owned and managed by Dora Management of Indianapolis, which operates a total of 15 hotels in Indiana. In fact, the same bank and management firm owns and operates the Econo Lodge across the street.
In an ef for t to provide excellent accommodations, the process of replacing furnishings and accessories will continue as the management strives to keep the facility as top-notch and up-to-date as possible.

Tammy worked her way up quickly from housekeeping to being named operations manager of the Baymont Inn & Suites in December of 2015. Both Tammy and Angie began their tenures at the hotel early in 2013. “I’m really excited about how our business has picked up,” Tammy says. “We average five to eight walk-ins each day.” The hotel is a popular destination for Valentine’s Day, with reservations booked far in advance by couples seeking a special getaway.
