NEW FACILITY OFFERS TRAINING TO IMPROVE AND RETAIN HEALTH, MOBILITY Article & Photos by Tara Steffen

M

obility is something we usually don’t think about until we’ve lost it. What if you woke up one morning and found you were unable to do things you’ve done every day for most of your life? Imagine simple movements... bending at the knees to sit, reaching to tie

your shoes, picking up a child...all suddenly very difficult or impossible to execute. As a chiropractor operating in Bluffton, Indiana, Dr. Kevin Bear’s aim is not only to help patients feel better, but also to function better. He is passionate about getting people

moving again and improving their ability to perform everyday tasks – those simple movements many of us probably take for granted.

In the gym at Bluffton Strength and Conditioning, Kevin calls his program “functional fitness,” meaning that everything a client would do in his facility can later be applied to daily life. He says it’s not about improved function in daily activities.

Just a few months ago, Kevin partnered with fellow-visionary Eric Tonner to open a new facility, Bluffton Strength and Conditioning, as a means to pursue this passion of helping people live better lives.

The functional fitness program is meant for anyone who wants to continue to live independently, to retain the freedom of

movement. Different activities and workouts are offered daily to improve overall body function. The best prevention – and the best cure – for ailments such as osteoporosis is strength training. Bones and joints wear down if they are not being used. There is an old saying that goes, “If you don’t use it, you will lose it.” The human body is remarkable, but if a certain part is not used regularly, it will become weak. The workouts at Bluffton Strength and Conditioning are intense, but they are also completely tailored to the individual. Matt Kaehr, the physical trainer on staff, assists clients as much as he can in helping them to set and reach physical goals that are important to them – like being able to move around better or increased strength for picking up a grandchild. These workouts are accommodating to everyone, no matter the age. The staff is generous with encouraging comments, but they never offer condemnation. Workouts are done at the pace set by the individual, within that person’s boundaries and limits. The staff is there to monitor progress and help clients achieve their goals of improving strength and motion in order to live a better life. Strength and conditioning programs credited to CrossFit, Inc. tend to be a bit intimidating for many people. While Bluffton Strength and Conditioning is not called a CrossFit center, the facility is Level 1 certified.

should not be given too much credit, says Kevin. The actual program is nothing like what you might see during an Internet search. There are three levels that Kevin incorporates into the program at Bluffton Strength and Conditioning. The first is the functional fitness, or helping to improve movement. The second is intensity or strength training. The third level is cardiovascular – getting the heart rate up to improve heart and metabolism function. The main goal is to get clients to excel at all three levels, rather than just one area. Being able to move freely requires range of movement, plus strength to perform it, and then stamina to continue with the activity. The program, by definition, is “constantly varied functional movements executed at a high intensity.” If someone is good at only one exercise, like pull-ups, they end up being deficient in another area. Kevin’s goal is to help them improve in overall fitness of the entire body – everybody improving every aspect of functionality in their bodies evenly.

1750 N. Hwy 1 – Bluffton, Indiana The clients who impress Kevin the most are those who haven’t worked out a day in their lives – those are not athletes and yet have decided it’s time to make a change. Some want to become healthier. Some hope to lose a lot of weight.

SHORT-TERM • Rehab to Home Program • Physical & Occupational Therapy

Kevin advises, no other program can guarantee that you will get healthy, and you will get stronger, and you will lose weight. Here, clients have the

At first, starting the program can seem intimidating, but it is never meant to be that way. There is plenty of encouragement to go around, even for the last person to complete a workout. Everyone cheers for fellow exercisers once they’ve finished the routine. It’s a completely different atmosphere, and there’s nothing like it, says Kevin. He recalls one particular client who was very unsure when she first came to Bluffton Strength and Conditioning, but she was determined to make some changes. This woman had to move beyond her comfort zone to complete the workouts.

NEW BOUTIQUE FEATURES ”SUNSHINE” AND WOMEN’S FASHIONS Article & Photos by Holly Wuebker

F

or shop owner Krista Muhlenkamp, Sunshine Boutique in Fort Recovery, Ohio, is about more than just clothing. It is about the entire customer experience. Clothing and purses adorn the walls, and eclectic tables feature jewelry, scarves, headbands and more. The ambience is welcoming and up-todate. Recently opened in October 2013, this “new” and inviting shop has much to offer for women of all ages.

Krista had a picturesque idea when she first decided she wanted to open a boutique. After touring a variety of other boutiques and still maintaining her own fashionable style, she decided to help others do so, as well. Krista wanted to create a place where customers could “come in, and feel happy and better about themselves.” In other words, she was aiming for “retail therapy” – because if someone looks good, it makes them feel good.

11

Krista assists customers with their purchasing needs, whether for others or themselves, and also coordinates outfits and styles, based on an individual’s unique preferences. The name Sunshine Boutique wasn’t something Krista just came up with by chance. While growing up, she heard the word “sunshine” again and again. Her grandfather, Peter Harold Welch, used to sing “You Are My Sunshine” to

her as a child, and her father frequently called her “Sunshine.” Now, Krista’s daughter Daisy adds new meaning to the word. The younger Muhlenkamp can be heard singing the same tune Krista’s grandpa sang in a radio advertisement for her mother’s business. A few words from a song have grown into a place of business that flourishes with new beginnings and opportunities for all.

NEW SHOP! OPENED OCTOBER 2013 The boutique is a family-run operation, and Muhlenkamp attributes much of her success to her supporting family, including spouse Troy, as well as her parents, sons Peter, 9, and Jake, 8, and Daisy, 6. Krista says, “Many family members, as well as friends, have helped make this dream of mine come true. It takes a village to start a business, and the community has been extremely supportive, friendly, and loyal.” New products are displayed on a weekly basis – from belts and blouses to scarves and sweaters. The items on display are not something you will find just anywhere because they are “unique but affordable.” From the beginning, Krista determined that Sunshine Boutique would support others in the local community and throughout the United States who are also building their own small businesses. Krista purchases many of her items from local artisans, small businesses and individuals creating their own fashion or organizations. Sunshine Boutique’s merchandise comes from the local area, Cincinnati and other places scattered throughout the states. Krista enjoys purchasing items crafted and designed in the USA. The average cost of an item is around $35, and clothing sizes range from small to 3XL. Krista’s selection is not limited to any particular age group, and everyone can find something that suits them and their own personal taste. A new look equals a new you, made possible by a short drive to the boutique. Krista is also interested in assisting local residents and, one day, hopes to offer items for those who have cancer or have dealt with cancer in their lives. If specialized bras and other items needed for those

This new opportunity would be extremely beneficial to the boutique, as well as local community members in the surrounding area. To have Krista create a new look for you, add this New Year’s resolution to your list and visit the Sunshine Boutique in historic Fort Recovery, Ohio. Purchase a new look for the new you, or just enjoy the atmosphere and the rays of sunshine that are sure to follow when you leave. The Sunshine Boutique is open Tuesday 9-5, Wednesday 12-7, Thursday 9-12, Friday 9-5, and Saturday 9-1. The shop is closed Sunday and Monday. Krista advises customers to “like” Sunshine Boutique on Facebook to learn more about recent additions to the shop, as well as upcoming promotions. “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine; you make me happy when skies are grey. You’ll never know dear, how much I love you, please don’t take my sunshine away…”

OFFERING EDUCATION AND SUPPORT TO EXPECTANT MOMS & DADS Article & Photos by Holly Wuebker

L

ife is precious, and every new child is a miracle. But, bringing a new life into the world is not an easy task, even in the best of circumstances. It is the mission of the Pregnancy Care Center of Jay County to “demonstrate God’s love by providing free counseling and support to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs associated with crisis pregnancy and family care.” From Monday through Friday,

volunteers at the center serve residents of Portland, Indiana, and the surrounding area with their pre and post-pregnancy needs. Community support is nothing new to the Pregnancy Care Center, as they have been receiving guidance since their establishment in 1993. A group of concerned community members knew the community needed a facility that could assist expectant mothers and families – and they created just that.

17

What began in a few small rooms at a doctors’ office just outside town expanded into a new spot on West Walnut Street. As the organization grew again, the office moved to Main, and then, again, to a new, more permanent location on Meridian. The center is still housed there today. The Meridian Street location was once a carry-out restaurant, and then a lawyers’

office. The building was gutted and remodeled in about six months’ time by local volunteers who worked tirelessly to make the new renovation possible. Executive Director Patricia Johnson, who prefers to be called Patty, said it was “a true community project.” Then, a couple years after the renovation, the downtown was engulfed by flood waters. The facility’s new interior was ruined and in need of another round of renovation.

CUSTOMERS ARE SEARCHING FOR YOU ON THE WEB, ARE THEY FINDING YOU?

The founding members did not give up. They remodeled the building again, and created a new and safe facility for parents, guardians and children. Patty emphasizes, “The children are what are important.” The operations of the Pregnancy Care Center are a cooperative effort, much like the facility’s establishment and renovations. There are currently nine volunteers who contribute their time on a daily basis to launder clothing, organize donated items and assist clients at the center. Many of the volunteers have been there for years. Jackie Grady has assisted at the Pregnancy Care Center for over a decade. Volunteers and contributors are greatly appreciated, as the organization receives no state or federal funding and relies solely on the generosity of local community members, organizations and volunteers. As executive director, Patty does an exemplary job with the organization and has been working there since about 2000 when they moved to West Walnut Street. Her favorite part of the job is “working with families.” Patty regularly mails newsletters to contributors, making them aware of all the good being done because of their support. For example, in 2012 the Pregnancy Care Center served 108 new clients, and volunteers put in more than 2,800 hours of service. The services provided by the Pregnancy Care Center are free and confidential. Some of these include: pregnancy testing, counseling, pre and postnatal education, abortion or adoption informative services, a 10-step abortion recovery program, parenting classes,

making cars like new

BERNE MAN EARNS HIS LIVING PROTECTING CUSTOMER’S INVESTMENTS Article & Photos by Tara Steffen

P

hil Horton began cleaning cars as a young man because it was one of his chores. Tidying up his parents’ vehicle after he used it was always a condition for borrowing the vehicle. Phil never dreamed that someday he would make a career out of auto detailing, let alone

start his own business. He was just doing what he was told to do. One day, a neighbor asked Phil to clean his vehicle. Phil really didn’t want to, he says, but recalls that his father applied the necessary “motivation.” If there was a job to do that might result in a paycheck, Phil’s dad pushed

27

him to accept it. A few years later, Phil is thankful for that motivation and the lessons in work ethic. Today, Phil has 10 years of experience in restoring and cleaning up vehicles and parts. He made the decision to open an auto detailing business only two-and-a-half years ago. While working for Secure Automotive

Repair in Berne, Indiana, Phil was asked to clean his employer’s vehicles. Soon, Phil was getting calls from his employer’s acquaintances, as well as family members and friends. As news of his detailing skills spread by word-of-mouth, Phil began to pick up more and more clientele. He says he never really advertised – people just heard about him.

260.525.0877 Phil Horton, Owner

“It’s Never clean until it’s Just Like New”

As owner and operator of Just Like New Auto Detailing, Phil never wants to appear arrogant about his work, but he feels that he does a good job and takes a ton of pride in it. His main goal is to make customers happy, if at all possible, by doing the best job he can. Phil speaks highly of his former employers and says he is grateful to them, not only for teaching him how to clean cars, but more importantly, for showing him how to treat customers. Phil says he doesn’t have a single bad thing to say about the guys at Secure Automotive, and he enjoyed his time working for them. He adds, “When they say they have ‘honest service you can trust,’ that is exactly what they mean.” Phil says that’s the most important thing he took from that job. “When people call you up, they are trusting you and paying for the knowledge of what to do.” Phil knows that his customers trust him not to use something that will hurt their clear coat or harm the carpet. Phil takes that trust very seriously, and he never wants to lose that level of trust with any customer. “I like to treat people like family,” he says, “and I believe my customers deserve the same.” Phil gives the best service possible and is always honest and upfront with people from the start. Not everything can be cleaned, and Phil is very honest with customers ahead of time when he’s sure the end result won’t meet their expectations. If it’s something that Phil isn’t capable of doing or is just going to be a waste of money, Phil is honest about that, as well.

Phil recalls one customer who called him to apply a StayNu finish on a car. When Phil arrived, this car was brandnew, purchased just a few hours earlier and meant to be a gift for someone. Phil was surprised that the customer requested this treatment for a new car but was surprised to see how much better even a brand-new car looked afterwards. A StayNu treatment is a four step process. The first two steps actually clean the paint, while the third includes a polish that will make the surface as smooth as possible. The final step is a sealer designed to make the paint look better than when it was brand-new. Phil jokes that the finish is so shiny, you could use the reflection as a shaving mirror. For eight months following a StayNu treatment, no waxing is required, and any dirt that adheres to the vehicle will easily wipe off or melt away in the rain. This treatment also creates a protective barrier against salt and won’t let the corrosive substance reach the clear coat. A customer who was wanting to sell his used car to a dealership was unhappy with the amount he was offered for the vehicle. He brought the car to Phil for a StayNu treatment. Phil says the paint had grayed, and the clear coat was sticky, but the finish cleaned up nicely. When the customer took it back to the dealership, the salesperson couldn’t believe it was the same car. The customer got a better trade-in price for the car, and the dealership

HealtH & ReHabilitation sold it just a few days later. The car’s new owner wanted to know how they got the car to look so nice, and the sales person told him about Just Like New Auto Detailing. Phil recalls another customer who went on vacation one hot, humid summer, and during a particularly heavy rainfall, the vehicle flooded. The moisture, combined with the summer heat, caused mold to grow profusely all over the vehicle’s interior. Phil had never done a clean-up like this one before and told her she would be better off replacing the interior. But, the customer insisted he make an attempt to clean it. After using some heavy-duty cleaners and an ozone machine, the customer was pleased with the results and never returned for the same problem.

The most unusual request that Phil has ever gotten was from an Amish gentleman who had just painted his buggy and wanted a protective coat on it. Phil thought, Those buggies are subjected to all the same elements as our automobiles...so, why not? Some see vehicle detailing as more of a luxury service, not a necessity. But, the truth is, detailing services can help make a vehicle last longer and more effectively retain its value.

TOOLS FOR NEW CAREER, JOB ADVANCEMENT & MORE Article & Photos by Holly Wuebker

“L

ifelong learning” is a common term spoken at the John Jay Center for Learning, located in Portland, Indiana. What started with a board of concerned community members, along with the Portland Foundation, led to a ribbon cutting ceremony in September 2001 to launch one of the leading educational centers in the area. The John Jay Center’s current executive director, Rusty Inman, is the fourth in succession since

the induction of the organization in 1999. Inman resonates with excitement when describing the organization. He reiterates the goal of John Jay Center’s educational partners, stating, “They meet people where they want to learn and provide them with the tools…at low or no-cost opportunities.” Executive Director Inman says, “It has been a great opportunity to help people and to give back.” After living in Chattanooga,

33

Tennessee, for eleven years, Inman learned of the opportunity at the center. He was excited to move back to his hometown and work for the growing organization. Student Services Advisor Carolyn Carducci enjoys working at the center because of “the students and the people.” She adds, “It is a good feeling to be able to fulfill (educational) needs.” Inman adds, “We look forward to helping area residents make a positive lifestyle change

through education made possible by The John Jay Center for Learning.” This “lifestyle change” has resulted in many individuals earning GEDs and/or colleges degrees at the center. The John Jay Center’s location on Meridian Street, originally the site of Weiler Brothers Department Store constructed in 1926, was acquired by the organization in 2004. The department store’s vault can still be seen in the executive director’s office, where six layers

of locks and codes protect the money storage compartment. In 2006, renovations began at the Weiler building, with a fund of nearly four million dollars provided through grants and generous contributions. Two short years later, the updates were complete, and a dedication program was held May 10, 2008 – to commemorate the one-time department store, as well as recap the modern educational organization that had become rooted in the community. The John Jay Center’s large facility houses the Advanced Placement Center, R&R, Annex, multiple classrooms, a technology lab, and resources beyond measure for individuals in the community. The lobby, café, conference room and other areas may be rented for any type of event or meeting for a small fee, depending on the reservation. As the John Jay Center for Learning expanded, so did the wide array of programs offered to the public. They currently facilitate the GED Program of Jay County, and they also partner with Ivy Tech, Indiana Wesleyan University, Vincennes University and other area colleges and businesses to assist individuals in obtaining their associate, bachelor’s or master’s degree. A new program to be added this summer, in partnership with Purdue University and Red Gold, Inc., is an Associate of Science Degree in Organizational Leadership and Supervision. This is just one of many upcoming additions to assist individuals in advancing their education. Recently, the Indiana Youth Institute awarded a grant to the John Jay Center to assist with their strategic plan. On the lowest level of the center is over 12,000 square feet of unfinished space. The plan is to convert this space into a vocational center for students and adults. Such a center would offer high school students the opportunity to obtain dual-

The center’s staff is always working on creating partnerships with area industries and manufacturers to advance employment opportunities and broaden the education of those in the local workforce. Within the community, the John Jay Center for Learning has already created partnerships with the Jay School Corporation, the Jay County Development Corporation, Jay County Community Center, as well as many others. In partnering with these major organizations, they plan on providing a general overflow of programs and assist with education that goes beyond high school.

Another new and exciting opportunity for the community in 2014 is the business learning series that will benefit the employees of local companies. The center will offer one or two-day classes from January through May, focusing on in-demand skills, such as Quickbooks, Excel, computing, social media, etc. These courses are intended to benefit individuals at all levels. The original mission of the John Jay Center organization – “To facilitate learning in the community that adds to the economic welfare and the quality of life of our Jay County and surrounding area citizens” – has only slightly changed. Today’s mission is, “To inspire individuals by creating an environment where learning leads to quality of life and economic viability.”

UNIQUE COFFEE HOUSE OFFERS A TASTE OF THE HAWAIIAN LIFE Article & Photos by Sylvia Marbach

S

haka Shack proprietor Matt Moore, who’s dubbed himself “owner and operator Shaka Guy,” opened his coffee house in Monroe, Indiana, a year-and-a-half ago. Matt has always been deeply-rooted in his faith and relentless in the pursuit of his dreams. One of Matt’s favorite memories from his youth was time spent at the quirky hangout, Blue Mountain Café in Fort Wayne, Indiana,

on the weekends. He says this memory was the inspiration for opening the Shaka Shack. “My dream was to be a professional actor,” he recalls, “and then I was going to own a chain of coffee houses, and I wanted them to be exactly like this Blue Mountain Café. “It was just so much fun, and I had so many good memories. I wanted to create a place where

people can go and create awesome memories with their friends or listen to good music.” Looking back to his own youth, Matt says, “Really the heart behind opening a coffee house was, I love kids, and growing up here, there was never a place where kids could just go and hang out. There were restaurants and things like that, but really not a place designed for youth...

“A place that, when they come in, they just feel comfortable – that was really what I wanted to create.” Matt graduated from Bellmont High School in 1989 and, after attending Huntington University, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. He met his wife Jamie there, and two lived on the West Coast for seven years. The Moores

After their second son was born, Matt and Jamie moved to Hawaii. Matt returned to school to acquire a degree in pastoral ministry and theology. For three years, he worked at a church and appeared in some commercials and TV shows. “We thought that we would probably stay there,” Matt says, “but then the Holy Spirit seemed to say, ‘This is just not the path I have for you.’” About that time, Matt’s mother called and informed him of a pastoral position at a church in Decatur. He sent in his resume and was hired a year-and-a-half later. Following God’s path for him led Matt and his family back to the continental United States, where he spent the next five years serving in the church. When the position with the church ended, Matt decided to open up a coffee shop next to his wife’s dance studio, Studio 180, in Monroe. “I thought, a nice compliment to the studio would be to put a coffee house right next to it.” Matt did deal with some uncertainty. “I think anytime you do something new – and it’s something that has been part of a dream for awhile – there’s that fear that this has been a dream for so long, what if it fails?

“But, I would rather try it and give it a good run than to have never tried it at all,” he concludes. “Still, I was scared to death. Monroe is so small, and there’s not a lot of through traffic here. “It’s not like we’re on a highway. It’s not like people have to come here. So, I knew that I had to create a place that was a destination – a unique place that people wanted to go to.” Matt says the inspiration for the Shaka Shack’s atmosphere came from home. “I

had a whole other theme designed. But, my wife is from Hawaii, and she goes through seasons where she really misses her home. “When I realized how homesick she felt at times, I decided, I’m going to just scrap my theme and redo it.” In the end, Matt was aiming for “an old surfer village feel.” Matt studied photographs of Haleiwa, a surfer town on the north shore of Oahu, and designed storefronts to mimic those in the photos. “I’m creating signs to go up on each storefront, so each one looks like a little surfer store.” Matt’s wife came up with the shop’s name, and he designed the logo. He’s still at work on the cafe interior, painting an abstract sunset on one wall and designing the storefront signs. The Shaka Shack offers a wide variety of quality beverages, as well as entertainment every Friday night. It’s a unique spot for people of any age to socialize and enjoy the venue. “I wanted to create a place that encouraged the arts. We really strive to fill up every Friday night with some kind of entertainment.” Karaoke, movie nights, and live bands are just a few examples of the entertainment presented here on Friday nights. “I serve amazing coffee,” says Matt. “All the coffee we serve and all the espresso we serve is all organic, and it’s all fair trade. We strive to bring in really highquality coffee.” Matt makes sure his product is also the freshest possible. “I work one-on-one with the roaster, and the roaster customroasts things for us so nothing is sitting on a shelf in a warehouse. roast it, they bag it, and I get it within a couple of days. “It’s really high-quality coffee.” In addition to coffee, Matt adds, “We have a full espresso bar, so we can serve whatever has espresso in it – lattes, cappuccinos, mochas...We do a lot of different espresso drinks. “We make seasonal drinks, too. We also have our own coffee line. We sell our own whole bean coffee here, and we do regular drip coffees.” For those not into java, Matt assures, “Even for the non-coffee drinker we still have a lot of drinks. We do fruit smoothies, and we offer a lot of blended coffee drinks that you can do with coffee or without coffee. We’ve also got a wide assortment of teas.” The Shaka Shack also serves pastries, desserts, and snack items. “In March through October, we do Hawaiian shave ice. We get all of our flavors from Hawaii, and I order everything from Hawaii.”

Despite the change in his career path, Matt hasn’t left his faith by the wayside. Rather, in his job at the Shaka Shack, he believes, “I have an opportunity to invest in people’s lives everyday. “I think that people are way more important to God. And, because they’re important to Him, they’re important to me. “That’s why I love what I do!”

it only happens in movies

OHIO CINEMA DRAWS A COMMUNITY TOGETHER AFTER TRAGEDY Article & Photos by Ashley Olson

C

hristmas miracles are usually reserved for the movies. So, in a way, it was only fitting that a real-life Christmas miracle occurred in a movie theater. Ron Dunn, who’s now the director of operations for Boyd Theaters, personally witnessed this Christmas miracle several years ago in Van Wert, Ohio. “We had a tornado 11 or 12 years ago, and it wiped the theaters out,” he recalls.

42

“Every year, we showed a free Christmas movie for kids. After the tornado went through, I stood out in front of the property with Jim Boyd and a man from a church in Columbus. “It was just before Christmas. One of us said, ‘It looks like we won’t be able to have a movie for the kids this year.’”

“But, I’d only raised two hundred dollars for presents and didn’t know how to get more. The guy responded, ‘We have that taken care of. Between a church in Westerville and my toy broker job, we’ll have the presents.’”

The man who drove by and stopped to pray with the men days before had the solution. “I didn’t know the guy was a toy broker from Chicago,” Ron says. “He called, and I told him I thought we had enough to feed them.

As many as 500 people reserved a spot at the Christmas event, which created another problem for him - how was he going to get all of the food and presents? Boyd was there to assure Ron that, in the end, everything would work out.

Ron promised, “There’ll be movies and presents for the kids, and we’ll feed everybody.”

“I contacted people from all of the factories that were destroyed in the tornado,” he says, “and told them to please tell people to come to the show.”

SMALL-TOWN FRIENDLY & EXCEPTIONAL PRICES

Ron made some calls, and the Van Wert County Fairgrounds agreed to donate their Junior Fair Building for a night. He also persuaded a man to donate his 10foot projection screen TV for the night. After securing the building and projection screen TV, Ron began making invitations.

ILLSHIRE

As bleak as the situation looked, Ron says that a guy who was driving by stopped and asked why they couldn’t show the free movie somewhere else. Standing amid the wreckage, the group of men prayed together. Then, Jim, the cinema’s owner, instructed Ron to look for another place for showing the kids’ Christmas movie.

New and Used Bicycles

Ron continues, “Then, the Mike-sell’s Potato Chip guy calls and says, ‘I want to drop off chips,’ and he donated hundreds of those single baggies. Pick ‘n Save showed up with 30 pounds of ham for the people. Save-A-Lot and all of the groceries showed up with turkey and bread. “Then, the Westerville guys from the church came with a truck packed full of

presents. Ladies from Rockford showed up with thousands of cookies. “ In just a few weeks, Ron, Boyd, the toy broker, the Westerville church, and other donors had thrown together a large event for workers who’d been laid off due to the tornado. And, it was worth all of the effort. “We all prayed before the show,” Ron remembers. “There was so much food, so many presents...we told every kid to walk up and get two presents.

“The kids had to go through the line three more times because there were so many gifts. And, these presents were nice, too – not cheap!” This was a truly memorable occasion for Ron, and all of the people who helped made a lasting impact on him. It turned out to be the biggest free Christmas show that the Van Wert Cinemas had ever done for the kids. “It wasn’t even a new movie that we watched,” says Ron. “We got Dr. Seuss on DVD. The

screen was ten feet tall, and the kids sat on the floor eating cookies and drinking pop. “The Westerville people gave checks to the full-time workers who had lost their jobs. It was a very moving experience for me. It changed the way I thought about things.” The Van Wert Cinemas may never be able to re-create the same miracle that happened back in 2002. But, they’re doing their best to help out in the community. Ron, who also works as a local storm chaser, believes that one of the cinemas’ biggest contributions is encouraging its young workers to have high aspirations. “A lot of kids who come through the theater and work for us go on to college – we try to encourage that. We hope the kids go on to contribute to society. “Ninety percent of the kids who work for us go on to bigger and better things. We like to think of this as a stepping stone to the future.” Ron says Boyd Theaters also makes a difference by offering families a cheap, local option for entertainment. The Van Wert Cinemas features five screens and charges $7 admission for adults and $5 admission for children. However, they also run daytime specials where anyone can get in for $5, as well as a buy-oneticket, get-one-free deal on Tuesdays. The nearby Van-Del Drive-In, located in Middlepoint, Ohio, is also a great value. As Ron puts it, if a family goes to see a movie in the city theaters, they’ll spend $60-$70. But, at a drive-in, they’re going to spend about $40. He believes this is why driveins are making a comeback today.
