TAG Menswear:

Smart, New Fashion Choices for Men Article by Dee Fisher Clotheshorse: noun (informal); A person whose chief interest and pleasure is dressing fashionably. (Random House Dictionary, 2015)

T

he day before its official opening, I went to the new TAG Menswear store in Van Wert to speak to the owner, Tim Slusher. Tim is also the owner of Slusher’s Jewelry here in town, so the first question I asked him was if he were leaving that business.

“My friends and family have always called me a clotheshorse, and I guess it’s true. I have been interested in men’s fashion for nearly as long as I’ve been interested in fine jewelry.

“Oh, no,” Tim laughed. “I’m a jeweler through and through. It’s my first love and has been my bread and butter for many years now.”

Looking at him, I had to agree. Despite being dressed in sweats, Tim cut a fine figure--no wrinkly or mismatched pieces in his outfit!

So, the second question I asked him was, “Why clothing?”

Tim’s decision to open up a clothing store in downtown Van Wert was very much lastminute, despite his lifelong interest in men’s fashion. “After years of thinking about it,

And Tim began to laugh harder.

“This business seemed like a natural fit.”

everything came together very quickly last August,” Tim said. “When the space here on Washington Street came open, the whirlwind began. Suddenly, I found myself in Chicago and Las Vegas at clothing shows, purchasing inventory.” Determined to set his store apart from the larger box stores and smaller specialty shops around Van Wert, Tim decided not to carry the recognizable brands of men’s clothing. Instead, his primary purchases were from the Marquis Signature Collection, Mizumi H2O and Cafe collections, and the F/X Fusion collection. All these brands are specialty lines not usually found in the larger box stores and rarely in area specialty shops. One unique thing that definitely sets TAG Menswear apart from other similar stores is that they carry their very own brand of jeans and chinos. “This was another way I could set myself apart from other shops,” Tim explained. “Not every specialty store and many big box stores don’t have a line of clothing carrying

their own name! There’s only one place in the world you can purchase TAG brand men’s jeans and chinos—and that’s right here in Van Wert.” Currently, TAG Menswear stocks sport shirts, t shirts, shorts and dress shorts, sweaters, dress shirts, jeans, chinos, Ben Sherman shoes, belts, and Skagen Denmark sunglasses. Sizes run from medium through

Topping it all off is the very unusual wall and counter decorations in the front area. “As we were searching in the area for more unique decor, we came across old tin newspaper prints that were actually used to print the TimesBulletin, Van Wert’s local newspaper, back in 1975,” Tim explained.

Along the opposite wall, more clothing is neatly stacked on crates and bright red industrial-strength shelving, purchased right here in Van Wert. On into the back room, more stacked crates create three walls of shelves holding men’s slacks and jeans, including the TAG brand, and racks made of plumbing pipe hold multitudes of hangers with casual and dress shirts on them.

FLOORING

The customer entering TAG Menswear for the first time will be struck by the unusual items holding the store’s wares. On one side of the front room, you’ll see displays of sweaters and casual shirts sitting on real packing crates that sport German printing— and, they’re actually from that country!

QUILTED HANDBAGS

“We decided to use ‘found’ objects from this area to set up displays and racks,” Tim said. “This also helped us to keep the cost of renovating the interior down quite a bit, so that we could put more money into our inventory.”

? XXL, though Tim is looking to add a variety of shirts in both small and tall sizes. Physically, the store itself tends to draw the eye. With a new, bright red and white marquee over the door, TAG Menswear is an eye catcher from the first glance. Inside, the store is decorated with an industrial theme— all wood, pipes, and metal. It’s very vintage and almost steampunk in its look.

?

“If you look closely, you may find names of stores and people that you recognize! I think it will be a great conversation starter for our customers.

“Who knows? Maybe someone will come in to check us out, see the “tin newspapers,” and end up staying long enough to make several purchases!” Currently, Tim has opened a Facebook page for the store. “We also have a website that went live shortly after we opened the store,” Tim said. “I anticipate doing online sales and specials on the Facebook page.

"Any sales rep I have ever worked with has been professional and a joy to work with. We appreciate Wabash Valley Living's level of service and professionalism."

“On the website, you can check out some great pictures of the store and some of our inventory, as well as a link to the Facebook page, and a place to join our email list to get specials, new arrivals, and events delivered right to your inbox. And, if you’re not sure of the size or colors you need for that special someone, you can purchase gift certificates for $25, $50, $75, or $100 dollars.” TAG Menswear opened its doors to the public just before Thanksgiving 2015, and they were pleased at the initial reaction and patronage by

Berne Ready Mix:

These Family Ties are Set in Concrete Article by Jaci Gorrell

T

he history of Berne Ready Mix is that of family, growth, and the hard work that made its prosperity possible. Stemming from the St. Henry Tile Company, Berne Ready Mix was acquired in 1974 and has been serving the surrounding area ever since. Nancy Subler, current office manager at Berne Ready Mix, credits her father and his work for the now-thriving business’ success. “St. Henry Tile Company was started in 1960 by my dad, Al Homan,” Nancy explains. “He saw the need to make concrete drain tile, which he sold to farmers to drain their fields. He was basically the only one selling concrete drain tile and fittings.”

With humble beginnings, Al Homan sought a way to fund his endeavor. “He started the business with two men named Robert (Bob) Boeckman and Ray Kremer,” Nancy recalls. “They had to find money somehow to get started up, so they just went around and asked friends if they would buy stock in the company and become shareholders. “My dad had an eighth grade education, but he always had a vision, and he was really smart. He had a lot of friends and they always believed in him.” Through the years, as concrete tile became increasingly obsolete, Al and his partners

“had to think of different things to sell.” Nancy adds, “They started selling coal and brick, which would actually come by way of railcar on the railroad track right next to the company.” Al later identified a need for ready-mix concrete in the Mercer County area, so in 1966, the company expanded into the ready-mix concrete business. As part of this expansion, he purchased Berne Ready Mix from Frank Nussbaum, one of the first of the seven businesses that St. Henry acquired. Berne Ready Mix was first managed by Nancy’s brother Bob Homan, but as their father reached retirement age, it was arranged that Bob would move back to St. Henry and take over the St. Henry Tile location. Nancy and her husband Gene would move to Berne to manage the Berne Ready Mix location. “We decided to give it a whirl,” Nancy explains, “and we’ve been here for 30 years!” As the Subler duo managed Berne Ready Mix, they made their family part of the business—just as Nancy’s father had done. “I started working for my dad around 5th grade. He would bring home checks for me

to put in numerical order, or on Saturdays I would go to the office and just clean things up or help him out.” Nancy’s time working for her father at St. Henry Tile Company was not only the beginning of her involvement with the business, but also a memorable piece of her adolescence. “It was just a little place. I remember seeing Bob Boeckman taking each tile out of a form one by one by hand.

They would make the tile and then put them in a curing bin. “Wet concrete has a very different smell, and the office that we worked in was right next to where the tile machine was. You walked out the door and it was just right there!” Continuing the familial trend, Nancy says, “Gene and I have five, sons and each one of them—as soon as they were old enough—started working here.” Berne Ready Mix is a concrete plant, precast manufacturer, and builders supply company. The business offers a diverse variety of products and services, including ready-mix concrete, manufactured and natural stone, various brick lines, a selection of concrete block, steel products, PVC/ sewer pipe and fittings, plastic field tile, drainage products and accessories, water works, bagged products, power equipment and hand tool rentals, sand and stone aggregate, agriculture and residential precast, masonry, door and window, landscaping and paver, anchoring, curing, and fireplace and chimney products. According to the Subler family, Berne Ready Mix is thriving. Nancy reveals, “We just now added another location. We bought the old Jay Products building, and they’re already starting to put up a ready-mix plant there. “We plan to have a retail store there, eventually, and we’ll be doing our precast from the Portland operation.”

Precast, a staple among the products offered by Berne Ready Mix, is produced when workers “take a form and pour the concrete into it and wait for it to harden so it’s already cast.” Nancy explains, “We can sell the concrete in its hardened state in different forms.” Though you may not realize it, you’ve likely seen several of the precast products made at Berne Ready Mix

around the community of Berne. Kathy Subler, a Berne Ready Mix employee, points out, “A good example of a precast project that we did are the big blocks in the wall around the clock tower.” The massive structure at the intersection of U.S. Highway 27 and State Road 218 is hard to miss. Berne Ready Mix also produced the large, black letters that spell “SA” outside of South Adams school entrances, as well as the base for the Nick Taylor monument at the Berne police station. In Decatur, Berne Ready Mix’s handiwork includes the concrete bases for the Decatur Sculpture Tour artwork displays. Kathy says Berne Ready Mix has been successful, in part, because of its “family” of employees. “There are several employees that have been with our company for over years. In today’s world, that is truly an accomplishment! “And, when you look at this as a family business, you can include our employees, as well. We have several that are related to other employees– father and son, brothers, cousins.” Berne Ready Mix is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Nancy adds, “If we’re here, the doors are open. We don’t turn customers away.” ad ad ad ad

Preble Gardens:

Popular Eatery Open with New Owner Article by Beth Steury

A

long-time establishment in Adams Count y, Indiana is under new management. Formerly known as Norm’s Preble Gardens, the popular eatery located a few miles west of Decatur was purchased by Jacob Harber in January 2015. He re-opened the restaurant last August. According to Jacob, who lives between Tocsin and Ossian, his experience in the food industry came from another end of the spectrum. He explains, “I was a delivery guy with Sysco for 17 years.” In fact, several years back, Jacob regularly made deliveries to the restaurant he now owns. When he learned the eatery was for sale— slated for the auction block—friends

encouraged him to go for it. And, he did just that. “It has certainly been an adventure,” Jacob reports, “especially during the rebuild, when I basically lived here. We gutted the interior of the building. A friend of mine and I did the work—it took six months.” First, the duo tackled the kitchen, which was completely renovated. Jacob is particularly proud of how this room turned out. The bar, which required the least amount of work, received a new ceiling and new duct work. Then, it was on to the large dining room, which received a complete floor-toceiling makeover and now boasts Spanish

lace on the gray walls and white ceiling. Jacob and his construction buddy pushed hard toward a late summer opening. In August, the new owner hosted a Friends and Family Night, where guests received free food. Preble Gardens (note the slightly shortened name) was officially open for business the following day. In late September, Jacob held a Grand Opening Celebration weekend and featured half-price desserts and appetizers, in addition to other dinner specials. A drawing for a gift basket was held each night. “The first couple weeks of being open, we were slammed,” he says. Jacob credits his Sysco sales associate for helping him create the menu. “We kept a lot of the same basic menu items—broasted chicken, burgers, tenderloins. “We added a great sandwich, Jake’s Chicken Sandwich.” The juicy, broasted, handbattered chicken tenderloin tossed in a

smoky, honey chili sauce is served on a brioche bun. Jake was especially interested in featuring quality meat items, such as the ribeye and sirloin steaks, ham steak, and liver and onions on the entrée menu. Seafood

offerings include catfish, cod, salmon and butterfly shrimp. “Frog legs is one item I was talked into putting on the menu,” Jacob says, admitting it was a wise decision. “We deep fry them, and people love them.” The appetizer portion of the menu includes several unique dishes. “Tater tot nachos are a big hit. It’s a meal in itself. People love tater tots. “And, the chicken livers—ah, delicious! We cook up hot, fresh pork rinds, too.” Jacob continues, “All-you-can-eat broasted chicken is the Tuesday night special. Friday is Steak Night, featuring special steak dinner prices, and Saturday’s special is BBQ ribs, featuring an old family recipe. People really like the ribs.” Preble Gardens also offers lighter choices, including soups and salads, as well as a children’s menu. The restaurant also features a full-service bar, with draft beer and many bottled varieties, in addition to wine. There’s nothing like a serving of homemade dessert to top off a meal. “We have pecan and chocolate crème pies. And, our apple dumplings are very popular, as is our chocolate lava cake.” Jacob is happy to reveal his personal preference. “My all-time favorite meal on the menu? Pork ribeye. It’s like a pork chop, but ten times better.” While most of his employees are new to the establishment, a couple of waitresses were former Preble Gardens employees. “I mostly tend the bar,” says Jacob, explaining his responsibilities. “Cooking is not really my thing.” Fortunately, he has experienced cooks in the kitchen to handle that important task. The restaurateur says he appreciates the “regulars” who frequent Preble

Thankfully, the public is accustomed to the short journey from Decatur to the Preble Gardens. “I thought the outof-the-way location would be a better thing,” Jacob adds, “because there’s not so much next door competition.” Currently, the restaurant serves dinner only from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Breakfast and lunch were available late last summer and into the fall. Jacob hopes to offer either or both sometime in the future. He’s especially interested in resuming breakfast on Sunday mornings.

Unique Jewelry & Hand-Crafted Home Décor

Jacob says he’s also working toward expanding his menu. He anticipates adding an all-you-can-eat-fish option to Friday’s Steak Night. And, he says, “I want to go with a Mexican Night on Wednesdays and a Pasta Night on Thursdays.”

Everyone Deserves

Jacob Harber encourages former and new customers alike to come on out and give the remodeled and revamped eatery a try.

All Circuit Electrical:

Serving Homeowners, Businesses, Government Article by Jim Kirkwood

W

hen Ryan Hurt opened All Circuit Electrical in 1998, the new business operated from a small, one-car garage with a couple of skilled workers. Today, it is a major enterprise on U.S. Highway 27 in Bryant, providing safe power line systems and doing residential, commercial, industrial, and agricultural electrical system installation and repair. In his casual, low-key way, Ryan states, “We’re just like a normal electrical shop.” This is a bit like Amazon.com saying that they “just sell a few books.” “We get into a little more than most places do,” the entrepreneur adds. “We do a lot of

utility stuff, high voltage, low voltage, and so on.” Earlier this morning, Ryan had been pouring concrete for a service pole installation. He says, “I’ve also been to Wal-Mart and have guys working on a house in Portland…other guys working on a house in Coldwater…got underground stuff being dug up in another county. Got all kinds of stuff going on.” Shortly after our interview in Portland, Ryan and his employee Brandon Muhlenkamp would be leaving on another job—replacing a snapped electrical pole in Adams County. Ryan predicts, “We’ll probably work to 7 or 8 o’clock tonight.

“We do quite a bit of work for municipalities,” he explains, “and there are many counties we take care of.” Ryan says they recently had a job doing installations for the Veteran’s Administration at their campus in Danville, Illinois. “We do service work, a lot of underground work, boring, a lot of industrial installations, and a lot of powerline building. Today, we might be 6 feet deep working on an electric entrance. Tomorrow, we might be 80 feet high on another job.

In order to be ready for upcoming damage jobs, Ryan keeps a constant eye on weather systems. If a large storm is about to wreak havoc on electrical systems, Ryan and his crews try for a bit of rest, getting off work a bit early the day before, so that they are prepared to get moving when urgent telephone requests pour in. In spite of the demanding and emergency nature in his work, he says, “It is neat to meet all different kinds of people. There are more good things about this job than bad.” All Circuit Electrical also sells and installs Generac home backup generators and business standby generators. Generac lays claim to be the largest supplier of home generators. “I hold a license for Generac and take care of their servicing,” says Ryan. “They send me to lots of different areas to install and service their equipment.” Ryan and his wife, Julie are an incredibly efficient team. They have been married for 13 years and have four daughters aged 1 to 13. It is obvious that they enjoy working together and supporting each other. Ryan credits Julie with doing a great job of managing the office in Bryant. “We have an excellent staff and the office is run very well,” says Ryan. “I don’t do anything in the office. I don’t like being behind a desk. Although I have a desk there, I doubt that I’ve sat there more than 60 minutes this year. “The ‘girls’ take care of all that, and I run the field and make sure all the guys are doing what they need to.” Julie does more than sit at a desk. In fact, she sometimes finds herself cutting wire and loading trucks. During our interview, she was constantly interrupted by phone calls from suppliers, walk-in customers, and from

Ryan himself who breezed through, checking on phone messages and playfully teasing Julie as she posed for a photo beside the large bucket truck. There was lots of laughter when Julie suggested Ryan should be the model. “Ryan’s the one who started this business from the ground up,” says Julie. “He was young and worked night and day. That’s what we do.”

DID YOU KNOW? While being interviewed, Ryan and Brandon continue their work in a refurbished and newly-empty factory building in Portland, Indiana. Pointing to a large electrical installation far across the wide building, Ryan says, “That’s the old indoor sub-station over there. “It has been here for 50 years, so we did away with that whole thing and made it into this smaller 480-volt main distribution panel. We also have installed a complex of ceiling lights and electrical outlets.”

MYSTERY

All Circuit Electrical is one of the contractors helping with the remodel of the Portland facility for another business featured in this issue—Berne Ready Mix.

Crossroads Pantry:

Convenience Stores in Four Area Locations Article by Kristi Searles

B

ryan Schindler had always dreamed of owning his own business. While working as a sales rep for National Oil and Gas, Bryan noticed convenience stores beginning to replace standard gas stations. He saw this as his prime opportunity to open his own convenience store. Based on traffic count, Bryan chose Markle as the location for his first business. In 1985, Bryan and his wife Donna bought an old garage, rebuilt it, and opened Crossroads Pantry. The store was a success. In 1987, Bryan and his sister partnered and expanded the business to four more locations: Ossian,

Ashley, Montpelier, and Monroeville. However, the siblings sold the stores, one by one, with the exception of the Crossroads Pantry in Markle. Bryan bought a new store in Waynedale and operated it for eight years until he discovered a store in Geneva was for sale. His son Jason remembers, “My dad always wanted to own the Geneva store. “It is close to his heart. Growing up in Berne, he had always desired that store in Geneva.” Bryan made a trade, selling his Waynedale business so he could purchase the Geneva store.

Br yan retired from the business in 2010 but still remains owner of both the Markle and Geneva stores. Jason laughs, “He may be retired and spends six months out of the year in Florida, but he still acts as a consultant to us!” These days, Jason runs the business with his sister, Tria Schindler. The pair have since purchased convenience stores in Bluf f ton and Warren. Tria manages the Bluffton store, and Jason’s wife, Kristi, is the manager in Markle. Jason oversees all four Crossroads Pantry stores, but the Warren and Geneva locations are managed outside of the family. All four Crossroads Pantry stores are unique and carry different items. “We cater to our clientele and the needs of each location,” explains Jason. “Here at Markle, Crossroads Pantry is part of the community. “We are the local corner store. We get a lot of foot traffic here with repeat, regular customers.”

In Markle, Crossroads Pantry is equipped with a full kitchen, kitchen manager, and a full-time cook. Jason says, “Our cook attends cooking shows for fresh and new ideas to bring back.” The store is a place where many community members come to sit down, talk, and enjoy

Markle has many grocery staples local residents might need if a snowstorm comes their way. “The store includes a large stocked deli meat and cheese case with competitive prices that are lower than Walmart and Kroger,” Kristi reports. “We even make party trays and large chicken orders for customers.”

Since Bryan first opened the Crossroads Pantry in Markle, it has been renovated twice. In 1991, the bathrooms were moved inside, and the store was updated. In 1998, another addition doubled the store’s size and extended the seating area.

“We have had a Taco Bell and a dollar store in here before, but we have found the seating to be the best use of our space,” Jason explains. “In fact, we would love to have more seating room in all of our stores.”

The other Crossroads Pantry locations are quite different than Markle. “Speed is an issue at the other stores,” says Jason. “Most customers are looking for quick snacks, food, and gas.” Plans are underway to raze and rebuild the store in Bluffton beginning January 2016. The store has not been updated since it first opened. “It is run-down, and we want to bring it back to its glory days.”

The most significant feature will be an additional gas pump station. Plans also include new equipment, fixtures and deli case, as well as doubled seating. “The new seating will hopefully include four-person booths instead of twoperson booths.” Crossroads Pantry was built upon the principles of Bryan Schindler. Jason explains, “When my dad opened the business, he always prided himself on providing a clean and safe environment with a fresh look, along with great personalities. “It’s about building relationships, and our employees are the face of our business. We rely heavily on them. We are blessed to have longevity with our employees. “One employee at Markle has been with us for 24 years. Many others have been with us for seven or eight years. We appreciate their hard work!” Both Jason and Kristi say they enjoy the business. Jason’s favorite part is the

The Backway to Wren:

Country Shop Offers Floral Arranging & Gifts Article by Beth Steury

A

gainst a beautiful wooded, rustic setting tucked in an eastern corner of Adams County is The Backway to Wren Floral and Gift Shop. The rural Decatur shop is situated next to the log cabin home Sandy and Kevin Adams built in 1988. Before she opened her shop in 2009, Sandy had worked as a vocational secretary for the local schools for 14 years. When she wasn’t working at the school office, she created wedding floral arrangements for family and friends—for the fun and the experience. When the secretarial position was suddenly eliminated in 2008 due to state funding changes, she was devastated.

“I cried for three weeks,” Sandy shares. “I had planned to retire from school.” At first, Sandy had no idea what she wanted to do. But now, looking back, she sees the elimination of her position differently. She admits, “It was actually a blessing in disguise.” The thought of owning her own floral and gift shop had been a spark in the back of Sandy’s mind for many years. The spark was fanned into a flame as preparations were made for a family member’s funeral. When a business was unable to seal or fill a concrete planter purchased for the occasion,

Sandy gladly completed the job. She received many compliments on the planter and encouragement to go into business. “ I t ’s s o m e t h i n g I ’ v e always wanted to do,” she remembers responding— with no immediate intentions to act. Yet, within 10 days of Aunt Betty’s funeral, Sandy was applying for a business license. “I’m pretty sure Aunt Betty is the one who put a bug in God’s ear!” she says. Some five months later, Sandy opened the shop next to her rural home. Not only did the concrete planter spur the launch of The Backway to Wren Floral and Gift, this concrete angel filled with silk flowers has been affectionately dubbed “Betty’s Angel” and has become a fixture at her business. Customers often request a “Betty’s Angel” to memorialize the passing of their loved one. With each order, Sandy includes the story of the first “Betty’s Angel,” removing the mystery behind the concrete planter’s name.

The rustic country setting continues inside the small shop that’s outfitted with a finished wood floor and barn tin-covered ceiling. The array of merchandise has grown from the beginning days, when wedding and funeral items, candles, wind chimes and floral arrangements filled the shop.

In recent years, faux paintings, rusticfeel items, and a variety of wood pieces have been added at the shop. Funeral and memorial items, including headstone saddles and flowers for headstone vases, continue to be popular. “It’s a bittersweet situation when receiving an order for a funeral,” Sandy shares. Yet, she welcomes the opportunity to provide special items for such occasions. “I’ve incorporated a lot of things into my merchandise, including crosses, throws, wall plaques, and home décor. “I think people enjoy visiting shops that carry religious items,” she adds. A Bible verse, Psalm 28:7, on her business card communicates her interest in items of a religious nature. “I love doing weddings,” Sandy continues, remembering the first bouquet she made for a family wedding so many years ago. Originally, she created only silk floral arrangements, but a year-and-a-half ago, she delved into fresh arrangements, as well. Sandy offers complete floral design services. From rustic to elegant to blue jean weddings, she does it all, trying to get a feel for each personality. “Mostly, it’s just the bride who comes in, but I love it when the groom comes with her because he can give his input.

“I can get a feel for the couple and what I can add to make the wedding even more special. I try to make it personal to them and special for the couple.” While Sandy insists that building, painting and refinishing furniture is strictly a hobby, her passion for creating and refurbishing wood pieces has crept into her business. Sandy points to the shop’s front counter. “I made this out of the old bleacher wood from the swim area of a local high school.”

Upon discovering a large amount of wood headed for the dumpster, she was given permission to load up her truck and then built the counter, as well as a dining room table for her home that will seat 10. Other woodworking projects have found their way into the shop, too. While Sandy admits to hearing comments about the shop “being so far out there,” she loves the setting and reminds potential customers it’s actually less than ten minutes from downtown Decatur and only a “hop, skip and jump” from Willshire and Wren in Ohio. “In people’s minds, it’s a longer distance because it’s a rural address.” With a chuckle, Sandy adds, “I can walk home for lunch.”

This proximity to home benefits her customers, as well. While the shop has advertised hours of operation, she says, “If I’m home, I’m open. If I see someone pull in, I’ll come out and open the shop, even if it’s not within our designated business hours.” Sandy dreams of more space for merchandise and to pursue her woodworking hobby. “People come in and say, ‘You really need to build on,’ and that is something I would like to do soon.” Travel the few minutes from Decatur to take in the unique variety of merchandise The Backway to Wren Floral and Gift Shop has to offer.
