Quilted Fashion Despite Snags, Family Business Succeeds with Quilted Bag Line Article by Dee Fisher Photos provided

M

ade in America—what do those words mean to you? Pride in craftsmanship? Keeping jobs here at home rather than outsourcing them? It meant all of that and more to the Adams family about 25 years ago when Kim Adams began Kim Adams Manufacturing (KAM) in a garage in Convoy, Ohio, just to the west of Van Wert. Starting with fewer than 10 people,

she and her family grew a small sewing business making quilted fabric products to a quite successful, family-run contracted sewing business in a modern facility in Vision Park, the manufacturing/business park outside Van Wert. All went well for many years, even after a temporary setback in November 2002, when a tornado hit the area, destroying their relatively new building in Vision Park. The site was

rebuilt, and the company never broke stride. KAM was named Enterprise of the Year in 2005 and Van Wert County’s Small Business of the Year in 2006.

contracts, including KAM’s. As this customer brought in the lion’s share of KAM’s contracted business, this left KAM and its 140 employees with a very uncertain future.

Then the hammer fell.

But the Adams family was only down, not out. They decided to step out in faith and begin their own line of quilted fabric bags and totes. As a nod to the coming generations in their family,

In 2008, KAM’s largest customer announced that it would discontinue all its domestic sewing

the new product line was given the name Stephanie Dawn, after Kim’s oldest grand-daughter. Six years later, KAM continues to rebuild and branch out into many areas of industrial sewing, with their house line, Stephanie Dawn, leading the way. “The family didn’t want to close the factory (when their largest contract pulled out in 2008), so they got together and thought, could we, should we start our own line? Everyone circled the wagons and decided we would do just that,” says “Sticky” Rammel, head of marketing. “Of course, they needed a name for the line, and Kim’s oldest granddaughter is Stephanie Dawn Adams, daughter of Kim’s son Ollie and his wife, Amber. We all thought that was a pretty name and decided to go with it.” Although they had to cut back on the number of their employees, the family was able to keep the business on its feet. Now, besides their flagship line, KAM has several other contracted jobs that are made alongside the Stephanie Dawn line. These include Pocket Plus, a fabric pocket of various sizes designed to fit over a waistband, handlebars, walker/ wheelchair handles, and stroller handles, secured with magnets; and Greto, a company that uses heavy paper bags sewed by KAM to keep the spray of paint from getting on truck parts. However, the pride and joy of the family is their very own line of quilted fabric products, which is quickly gaining in popularity as time goes by.

Brandy Rammel, Sticky’s wife and Kim’s daughter, heads up the color and design of the products, bringing in fabrics from overseas, mostly Korea and Japan. “Basically, a design company in California brings fabric over. We can sometimes choose where the fabric comes from. That’s the only component of the bags that doesn’t come from the US. “It is quilted for us by a company in Kansas City. GEELS BACKHOE Service We’ll Move the Earth!

Stephanie Dawn products are marketed through independent sales representatives who carry several gift lines to gift shops and specialty boutiques around the country, including a young business here in Van Wert—The Embroidery Coop. The owners, Shelly Becker and Ernie Geyer, do custom embroidery in house and market other fabric products, including a good portion of the Stephanie Dawn line. “We’re excited (about our relationship with The Embroidery Coop) because they’re a younger company we can partner with,” Sticky related. “And, we love that they’re downtown, because Van Wert is working hard to grow the downtown area, and we feel strongly about helping with that growth in any way we can.” As well, Stephanie Dawn maintains an online store on its website for direct sales from their factory. Twice a year, products are updated and added, and some are retired and discontinued. This year, Stephanie Dawn will hold its seventh annual Outlet Sale on August 7, 8, and 9 at their building in downtown Van Wert, located at 223 S. Washington Street, across the street from the Wassenburg Art Center. “The sale is always in conjunction with the (Route) 127 sales, since the building is located right on 127. “Of course, this year, the Van Wert Ribfest is that weekend, and the Lincoln Highway sales, and we’re really excited, because it’s great for Van Wert and the county. We’ll have lots of people coming

through. Hopefully they’ll be eating in restaurants and staying in hotels here in Van Wert as well as checking out retailers all over town.” The Outlet Sale will include factory seconds (products with very small defects) as well as retired colors and styles. “This is the only time during the year that we sell factory seconds,” Rammel said. “Prices will be 25% to 75% off retail prices.”

MOVING DECLUTTERING OR JUST NEED

MORE SPACE?

If you’re in Van Wert, be sure to call the front office at KAM to schedule a factory tour. On my trip around the factory, I was amazed at the amount of technology that is involved in creating a fabric-based product. As well, I was surprised to see Kim Adams herself hard at work. “Kim is very hands-on, so if she hears of a problem, she can make adjustments and fix it.” Sticky drew himself up proudly as he continued, “That’s the hill we stand on—American-Made and AmericanQuality.” The Adams are continuing their handson tradition, as Stephanie Dawn herself will be sewing this summer after her high school graduation. American-made is more than words here in Van Wert— it’s a way of life.

Family Farms Establish Co-Op to Supply Clean, Healthy Foods Article by Amy M. Orr

W

ith so much concern today over the use of hormones, steroids and pesticides – and how these manmade chemicals might be affecting the health of American consumers – there is a group of local farmers offering a more traditional fare. According to Bryant, Indiana resident Amy Schlichter, this topic had been the focus on an ongoing discussion between six families,

who hold monthly meetings, for about two years. Amy and her husband represent one of the six families; the other five families own and operate traditional Amish homesteads in Adams County. “This group got started because their desire is to produce healthy food options for the community,” Amy explains. “We are family friends, and we’d been talking about their

WVL July 2014 / 17

passion for this – how they wanted to utilize the farming techniques handed down to them and offer the products to other families. “So, we joined forces, and I became their marketing agent. They don’t have access to the Internet, so I created a website for them.” The families settled on “Rich Roots Street CoOp” for the name of their organization. Amy

Before

says they call it a “street” co-op because there is no storefront, or even a permanent pick-up site, at this point. For now, customers placing orders with the co-op are able to pay for and collect purchases at the Bluffton Farmer’s Market. The goal of Rich Roots Street Co-Op is to keep its foods as clean as possible. Amy clarifies, “We are trying to go back to homesteading basics, instead of the modern livestock farm practices.

“The farmers are very precise on what techniques they use. They don’t use any hormones or antibiotics. And now, we have all these healthy foods you can’t typically get in a grocery store. Even if you buy organic food at a chain store, it’s been traveling, so it’s weeks old instead of days old.” While at least two crops are certified, one Rich Roots farmer who prefers not to be named says, “Our products would probably be described as non-certified organic.” At the top of the products list, you’ll find beef, veal, and lamb. “The beef would be all grass-fed. The sheep are grass-fed. The veal get fresh raw cow’s milk and grass. Our grass-fed animals get fresh grass every 12 to 24 hours.” The co-op also raises free-range turkey and chicken. A farmer points out, “Some organic free-range chickens are actually raised in small pen areas and have little access to fresh grass – these operations are not too far off from the high-rise coops. Ours are raised on pastures and are moved regularly so they get fresh grass. “We don’t have pork ready now, but it will hopefully be coming by winter. The hogs are fed non-GMO, non-certified organic grains. We can take orders for pork now, though.” Amy adds, “Customers can purchase meats in bulk or by the piece. We just had some processed not long ago, so it’s all available in bulk right now. We get big orders, sometimes – we had a lady order 70 chickens awhile back.

“We will be offering dairy in the future through herd shares. We are ready to sell dairy – we just have to get some paperwork completed, so everything is done properly.” At least one Rich Roots farmer is raising organic produce, including tomatoes. Although he put out nearly 1,000 plants last year, he has cut back some for the time being. He says, “In the future, we’ll be trying to talk with customers about what produce they would like us to raise. With organic produce...there’s just a lot more work to that.

“But, if you start with soil in the right condition, you’ll have healthy plants, where the sugars are just right. Bugs can’t handle the sugar, so they won’t attack the healthy plants.” However, farmers in the co-op may also use some natural dust, or even molasses, to combat pests in a safe, organic fashion. Rich Roots does have some of last year’s produce available in canned goods, including a three-vegetable drink containing tomato juice. According to Amy, when the co-op produces canned goods, they use mainly apple cider vinegar and honey. “They don’t contain cane sugar, unless it says so in the description on the website. “We also sell baked goods, including specialty gluten-free and paleo foods. We have a lady in the co-op who can bake just about anything – and make it taste good! She has Celiac’s disease and has to be extremely careful of what she eats. “But, she’s learned how to cook this way, and customers can order things they might not normally be able to eat – cookies, brownies, bread, whatever. We have gluten-free, yeast-free, casein-free, and soy-free baked items available to order. “She also makes homemade lotions, salves, and things like that. We also want to add more homemade medicines and ointments in the future. We want to help people be more self-sufficient in that area.” Rich Roots currently offers a selection of aromatherapy oils. “And,” says Amy, “we’ll have raw honey products available shortly.” It isn’t unusual for a food co-op to charge an annual membership fee. Although Rich Roots had been assessing a small $25 annual fee, Amy says they recently decided to offer memberships at no cost. “It’s difficult to offer discounts,” Amy admits, “but the product is better.” Currently, the co-op is giving a 5%

discount for purchases made at the Bluffton Farmer’s Market. To order from Rich Roots, customers may log onto Amy’s website at www.richroots. org and place the order online. For those who don’t use the Internet, ordering by phone is also an option. The website also features a blog with plenty of helpful information. “Customers can see what’s going on at Rich Roots,” Amy says. “Some of the articles on the blog were written by our farmers, though they don’t use the Internet. “We also have a Facebook page. That one’s easier to update frequently. One farmer reveals, “ Our goal isn’t to stay at the farmer’s market. We want to have a certain drop-off site every two weeks, once we have enough regular orders.” For this man, participating in the co-op could change his way of life. These days, most in the Amish community are unable to support a growing family through farming alone. But, he dreams of being on the farm with his children full-time. “We want to keep our farms operating with the family. For me, it’s the importance of having the children at home on the farm. If I do the chores by myself, it might take two hours.” He laughs. “If my kids are helping, it might take hours. But, I feel it’s important to have the children at home helping out. “We see that this co-op could really grow, even adding other farmers. They’d have to have the same vision we have. We would produce more or look for other products if there was someone interested in them.”

Freshly Baked Amish Family Rising with the Sun to the Delight of Taste Buds Article & Photos by Sylvia Marbach

S

so we decided to put in back in use,” Anna says of the new business. The Schwartzes opened Blue Creek Bakery on April 23rd of this year.

“We just bought the property back in March or April, and this bakery building was on it,

Anna explains that she has always enjoyed baking, and had even worked in a bakery before the couple opened their own shop. “As far as how I learned to bake, I learned from my mom.”

tephen Schwartz and his wife, Anna L. Schwartz, are parents of seven children. Both grew up in the area. Together, they recently started a new bakery, located at 2198 South U.S. Highway 27 in Berne, and they have experienced a tremendous amount of success in a relatively short time.

WVL July 2014 / 23

She adds, “I did work at a bakery in later years, about the age of 19 or so. I just really enjoy baking.” In fact, Anna says her favorite part of managing Blue Creek Bakery is the opportunity she has to bake everyday. Although Stephen is not much of a baker himself, he still plays a part in the success of

the small business. “I do most of the ordering and make sure the equipment keeps running.” He also ensures things are operating smoothly in the morning before leaving for work. “I go in the morning to help everything get going, and soon after everything’s running, I leave. My wife and the nieces keep it going.”

As an owner, Stephen says he most enjoys that “everything runs smooth, and we can sell baked goods. A lot of customers showing up – that’s the good part about it. That’s what we’re in business for. I enjoy having a nice product, and one that tastes good.” Stephen lists the many baked goods that Blue Creek Bakery offers. “A lot of different pies, as well as fried pies, cookies, bars, and angel food cakes. We have quite a few different breads, like cinnamon, white, whole wheat, and raisin. “We sell noodles, jams, and whoopee pies, too. We also have the cream-filled Long John donuts – anything in the baking line.” According to Stephen, “The fried pies are kind of a specialty item. You take dough, and you put pie filling in it. We have a tool that seals that pie filling in between that dough, and then you deep fry it. “And, after it’s deep-fried, you put a glaze over it, and it kind of gets a little crisp. It’s very good. We can do about any fruit pie flavor with it – cherry, apple, blueberry, raspberry, lemon.” Stephen says some changes have been made at Blue Creek Bakery, and that there are a few more changes to come. “We have added the jams since we started, along with the fried pies. “We’re planning to add apple fritters, too. We don’t make cream pies, yet, but hopefully that’s coming. I’m sure there will be more as time goes on.” The coming additions at Blue Creek Bakery aren’t limited to baked goods, either. “We have plans to have the Amish country popcorn in there,” says Stephen. “We’re looking for more jellies and jams, as well as cookbooks.”

Recalling one of the challenges of learning to operate the new business, Stephen admits they struggled with donuts for awhile. “We weren’t able to have a nice shape with them. They wouldn’t hold their shape. And, the glazing wasn’t the way it should’ve been. But, that has improved quite a bit.” They also have a new glazer that is now in use. One particular service that Blue Creek Bakery would like to develop further is special-order baked goods for customers. Stephen and Anna would like customers to think of Blue Creek Bakery for special occasion orders. As the new business works out small wrinkles here and there, Stephen says, “I’m still learning myself.” But, he is pleased with his family’s success so far, and he hopes to see more growth as time passes.

Primitive Design Discover a Wealth of Rustic Home Furnishings at The Saltbox Article and Photos by Holly Wuebker

F

or an outsider looking in, The Saltbox Home Furnishings, located in St. Henry, Ohio, appears to be just another shop. But, when you open their welcoming red front door and peek inside, you are transported back in time, to an entirely different era.

The exquisite home furnishings offered provide a variety of goods that work for anyone’s unique

tastes. Primarily focusing on primitive items, it’s the perfect place to find decorations for just about any space. Owner Lisa Prenger is a fun-loving entrepreneur who spends most of her time in the shop, buying items to display and sell, and arranging everything to her specifications. As a mom and wife, she’s busy with her four kids, ranging in

ages from 17 to 25 (two boys and two girls). Her youngest will be a senior this year at St. Henry High School. Lisa’s family is very supportive, and her husband Steve, who serves as the junior high football and basketball coach, has assisted her along the way. After being married nearly 30 years, they both enjoy the small-town

community life and everyone they get to meet in the shop. That’s one of Lisa’s favorite parts about working at The Saltbox – meeting new customers or clients, who soon become friends. She enjoys hearing about when someone has a new baby, gets married, or when a customer just needs items to decorate their home.

Berne Swiss Days The Swiss Days Committee in Berne, Indiana, is helping us bring you family-friendly music and programs. Our small-town festival celebrates Swiss heritage with delicious foods, music, and competitions, including Berne’s Got Talent, Swiss Days Quilt Show, and a brat-eating contest! Come to Berne and see what our Swiss community has to offer.

CELEBRATE Today, Lisa has friends across the country who she first met at the shop. One individual is in western Indiana near the Illinois border, and there is another from New York. She chats with these friends on Facebook almost every day. For Lisa, it’s not only about gaining customers but “becoming friends” with them. The Saltbox first opened on Main Street, across from the church in the old hardware store, in March of 2004. A few years later, Lisa moved the shop to State Route 118. Most recently, she moved to Kremer Hoying Road, where she will be celebrating her second year in August and more than ten years in the business. As Lisa selects products for her shop, she generally bases her decisions on what she likes, as well as what her customers have requested. She obtains items from outside suppliers and from a few nearby businesses, as well. Some of the primitives and other items at The Saltbox are actually individually created and crafted by gentlemen in Muncie, Indiana. Many times, Lisa chooses seasonal items based on the time of year, and you never know what you might find in the shop. Some customers may not realize that she also carries valances and curtains, and there are a number of other home décor items that may not appear in the store but can be ordered. What are Lisa’s favorite selections in the shop? Treenware and wovens are two of her top choices. The treenware are usually kitchen items, such as bowls, made of wood or resin, that are replicas of those used in pioneer days. The wovens are hand-loomed items that may include blankets, bedding, table linens, napkins and more. Lisa especially likes these items because they are both manufactured in the U.S. The treenware

is made in Salem, Massachusetts, and the wovens come from Pennsylvania. What some may not know, as well, is even though individuals can pick and choose as they please, Lisa is also happy to offer interior decorating advice or assist in the furnishing of your home. As a complimentary service, she tries to learn what an individual likes and what sort of taste they have. Then, she works with them on determining what they might like or want for their home or business. Her expert advice is always appreciated, since she certainly has a knack for the business. Furniture is something that not everyone thinks of when visiting a primitive shop. But, The Saltbox offers reasonably-prices accents and upholstered furniture, which is also made in the US. Glass vases, soy candles, and linens are all top-sellers in The Saltbox. Sometimes, Lisa surprises customers by showing how an item “can go in any décor.” For those customers who’d like to start creating their own home décor items,

Lisa provides classes once a month that teach fine arts or custom crafts. Previously, classes have covered rughooking, wool felting, embroidery and more. When wool felting, a crafter works with wool that almost “looks like cotton candy.” Using a special barbed needle, the crafter pokes at the wool to make specific shapes. Little by little, the fibers entwine to hold the shape, and the crafter can add other colors, too, to create a bird, flower, or other specific design. This is just one of the many projects offered at The Saltbox, and this fall, Lisa is hoping to feature a gourd class, where participants will create lanterns or other primitive decorations. The changing seasons are very popular at The Saltbox, especially fall and winter, since they are such special holiday seasons. There are decorations galore, and in November, Lisa actually closes the shop for a short period of time and re-opens on a Friday to feature the new holiday specials. Everyone is sure to find something to match their tastes. Why did Lisa decide to open the shop a decade ago? She says it was her love of primitives and her adoration for saltbox-style homes. Her aspiration is to one day own a saltbox home, but until then, she will continue to advise others in furnishing their homes.

M & M Flowers also distributes a wholesale catalog, which makes starter plants and materials, such as plugs and cuttings, available for other greenhouses to purchase. Melvin is working on other avenues of promoting his products. For now, he keeps quite busy with the sales and auctions that he currently participates in, including the Adams County Flower and Produce Auction. This local auction is invaluable to M & M Flowers, as it provides an opportunity for the sale of Melvin’s plants in bulk. M & M Flowers also offers a number of specials throughout the year. According to Melvin, the next sale will be held throughout the month of July, with special prices on perennials. In the fall, M & M Flowers offers 45 different varieties of mums, including old-fashioned hardy mums.

When they first opened Joe’s Lighting, Joe never dreamed the family business would grow into what it is today. Five of the Schwartzes’ eleven children help with the operations of this thriving small business.

From then, the business took off, and they moved Joe’s Lighting into the building behind their home in 1993. Joe and Rosie have since expanded their ever-growing shop even further.

Joe’s Lighting specializes in heating and cooking stoves. According to Joe and Rosie, their main sellers are the Ashland cooking stove, which they started selling in 1991, and the Hitzer heating stove, which they first

offered in 1980. However, Joe’s Lighting also carries a number of other stoves for heating or cooking. People from all over the country and beyond have come to shop at Joe’s Lighting. The shop receives a lot of orders from Kansas and Kentucky, especially. But, there was one

particular sale that sticks in Rosie’s mind – a man once came in and bought two stoves to take to Africa. He said these would be used for cooking in orphanages there. Rosie loves to hear her customers’ stories – why they are buying, and how they will be using the stoves. When propane prices rose

at one point, Joe’s Lighting experienced an increase in sales of their heating coal stoves. Customers were eager to find a less expensive way to heat their homes. While Joe’s Lighting Products specializes in heating and cooking stoves, the shop also offers kerosene lamps and globes, coolers, stainless steel pots and pans, glassware, and so much more. Joe’s also sells and repairs kerosene heaters. The Schwartzes’ son Mahlon welds and repairs stoves, and he provides installation, when needed. You’ll see advertisements for Joe’s Lighting in Wabash Valley Living, as well as an occasional ad in a local paper, but Joe and Rosie also find that word-of-mouth goes a long way. During the month of October, they usually offer a 10% discount on products throughout the store (excluding cook stoves and coal). Joe and Rosie are actually quite busy during the winter months, and they’ve been told their merchandise makes very nice Christmas gifts for many families, young and old. So, if you’re in the area between Berne and Geneva near 000 Road, please stop in and see what Joe’s Lighting has to offer. The shop just might warm both your heart and your home. Hours of business are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and Friday, and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Joe’s Lighting is closed on Thursdays and Sundays.

riginally from Wayne County Ohio, Harvey Miller met his wife Susie by chance at a wedding they both attended. Harvey and Susie were married in November of 1984, and since then, the couple has been blessed with six children, including four boys and two girls.

The Millers’ son Leroy opened his shop, Miller’s Variety, on December 9th, 2013, combining two different stores already in existence – Fabric Store-N-More, which was located in a shopping plaza near the north edge of Berne, and Fabric Bargains, which is now Countrylane Bakery. Although Leroy

Whether it is material for making baby blankets or clothing, or even corsages for wedding mementos, Susie has what you need for that special handmade touch of love. And, the Millers may specialize in fabrics, but as their name points out, the shop definitely carries a wide variety of other

their shopping done – and grab a bite to eat – all in one trip. Shoppers from some distance, such as Indianapolis, Park City, and Van Wert, Ohio, enjoy a visit the store, as do local customers. The sales staff at Closet Update love helping “people feel better about themselves” with what they are buying – and, the fact that they can do this for customers at a reasonable price. To keep track of inventory and consignor sales, much has changed since Closet Update first opened four years ago. Now, the staff uses computers throughout the store, and they even have their own barcode printing system in order to tag merchandise. When a consignment item sells, the sale is immediately recorded in the consignor’s account electronically. Each sale is itemized, and Kari works hard to ensure accounts are kept orderly.

There are always sale items in the shop, and Kari limits consignment clothing to 90 days on the rack to keep the selection fresh, while also sticking to the current season. With summer in full-swing, Closet Update’s shelves are stocked with shorts, tank tops, flip flops, and all your typical summer gear. This fall, they will update their displays and racks with clothing to match the changing of the seasons. Kari and her staff frequently use social media, including Facebook and Twitter, to help spread the word about new inventory, specials, and other important shop information. Even with alreadylow prices, Closet Update is always making special offers to its customers – it’s just one way Kari gives back to the community that has embraced her business. Closet Update also gives back during the holidays, when they offer extra promotions or specials. Last winter,

This year, the shop will be assisting with the Miss Jay County competition at the Jay County Fair by advising contestants and presenting them with business attire or dress options, when needed, for the competition. Since most of the contestants will only wear the clothing once, it provides a more affordable choice, and they don’t even need to leave town to go shopping. Another great service Closet Update is offering the community has come with its recent partnership with WorkOne, an employee-recruiting firm also located in Portland. Closet Update offers professional attire, from dress clothes and suits for interviews, to scrubs and more casual clothes for an everyday job. What’s the best part about having Closet Update nearby? You can actually MAKE money by becoming a consignor, and the cash from your sales can either go towards future purchases at the shop as store credits or back into your pocket. Becoming a consignor is fairly easy. After reading through the contract to participate, you set up an appointment to meet with one of the three ladies at Closet Update to finalize your information, and you are set to go. With over 1,100 consignors, the business is certainly thriving. Closet Update has a great policy on unsold clothing for consignors. If something doesn’t sell within 90 days, the consignor has the opportunity to

donate the item or reclaim it. Donated items are then given to a charity in Uganda, providing essential clothing for those in need. Reflecting on the past few years, Kari says the opportunity to open her shop came at a time when she couldn’t find work. After earning an associate’s degree in business from Indiana Wesleyan University, she was still unable to find a position about six months after graduation. That didn’t discourage Kari, though. She says she didn’t just want a job – she wanted “a career.” Kari took a leap of faith, and she’s been pleased with the results. Even as she started her own business and took care of her family, she also completed a bachelor’s degree in business and administration. Kari’s fortunate, as well, to work with her mother-in-law and a close friend, which allows her more time with her family, while also maintaining the business. One of the best parts about her decision, though, is it not only benefitted her and her family, but also the entire surrounding Jay County community. It strengthens a community when residents shop locally and spend money close to home.
