M.C. HILTY CONSTRUCTION:

Crew Earns Praise for Unusual Project Article by Tiffany Schortgen

I

t may surprise you that one of the most beautiful, unique and elegantly-designed dentist’s office in the country exists in a barn in Fort Wayne, Indiana. What may surprise you more is that an Amish construction crew from Berne, Indiana constructed this architectural wonder.

the idea of locating the dentist office in a barn after interviewing Dr. Painter and finding that his most fond childhood memories were of playing basketball in his family’s barn. “The design architect was from Beverly Hills, California, and he had been a dentist and then became an architect.”

Over the span of a year (1999 – 2000), M.C. Hilty Construction transformed a rustic cattle barn, built in 1885, into a modern, yet in some ways still rustic, dentist office for Dr. Gary Painter of Tooth Acres Dentistry. Mervin says, “It was a pretty interesting project. It was a challenge—that’s one reason I took it.”

The Hilty construction crew took Kennedy’s design and made it a reality. The project wasn’t without its challenges, though. In fact, this was the largest and most perplexing project of Mervin’s 25 years in business.

The renovation project was designed by architect Chris Kennedy, who came up with

“It definitely was the most challenging project I’ve done,” he reiterates. “One thing that made it complicated was the ceiling and walls had such unique angles. It took

us longer to frame those few walls than it would for a new house.” The office at Tooth Acres features t wo patient rooms that are completely surrounded by windows and jut out from the building as if suspended in air. Unique features continue throughout the facility. “We put up a wooden silo inside the office,” adds Mervin. “It’s about 18 feet in diameter, and that’s the waiting room.” Mervin started his business in the 1990s after he'd worked a variety of jobs. At one point, he held parttime positions at a feed mill and at Hitzer Stove in Berne. Without enough hours available at either place of employment, Mervin began doing construction work for his brother-in-law. He soon realized there was a high demand for new home construction at that time.

So, he and a partner opened M.C. Hilty Construction. Later, Mervin bought out his partner and is now the sole owner of the business.

Today, three of Mervin’s six sons work for his company, and he hopes to one day pass it down to them. “I probably will, if they’re interested. Right now, I know if I take a day off, things will keep on going.” M.C. Hilty Construction will take on almost any type of construction project, from new residential builds to renovations to the construction of large agricultural buildings. “We do about anything that comes along.” Back at Tooth Acres Dentistry, Dr. Painter offers the highest praise possible for a job well done—he’s been a repeat customer. Mervin says, “We’ve actually been back a few times to do additional work. We were there just a few months ago to put in a couple new rooms and to add a couple more chairs.” This is just one of the many construction projects that has earned M.C. Hilty Construction its good name over the years. When asked what has made his business so successful, Mervin humbly responds, “Happy customers.” Mer vin has seen many repeat customers, and word-of-mouth is what has really grown his business. “I haven’t had to do a lot of advertising.” Mervin laughs, “I had a customer from Bluffton who called and said they are ready for phase 52. He joked that the only project left is to concrete their back yard.”

An interesting project M.C. Hilty construction has worked on more recently was a garage made completely out of Styrofoam block forms. “They look kinda like Lego blocks,” Mervin explains. With a four-inch wall, the blocks have an R50 insulation value. “They say when you build a house according to their specs, you could have a 70% energy savings. There are a lot of different kinds out there.”

Though Mervin enjoys the construction very much, these days he loves spending time in his greenhouse business even more. Mervin and his wife Gertie are also the owners of GM Plants, which includes a set of vast greenhouses located on the family’s homestead. GM Plants is in its 11th season of business. They sell a large variety of annuals perennials, vegetable plants, color shrubs, hydrangeas, hanging baskets, urns and planters. People come from all over to shop at Mer vin and Gertie’s greenhouses, due to the Proven Winners brand of plants they sell. “We do mostly the Proven Winners, and that’s actually a patented brand of flower. The r e ar e onl y thr e e greenhouses in United States that propagate them.” These flowers perform quite well for consumers, and Mervin says that’s what keeps their business growing. “In the greenhouse environment, it’s easy to make plants look pretty good, but the real test is to see if they can withstand the elements. And, performance is what sets Proven Winners apart.”

FRENCH TOWNSHIP WOOD SHOP:

A Half-Century of Experience Article and Photos by Tiffany Schortgen

A

fter more than 55 years in the woodworking business, French Township Wood Shop owner Jacob Wickey still loves what he does. Jacob cannot recall exactly when he started the craft, but says it was sometime in his early adolescence.

For many years, woodworking was a side or night job for Jacob, and he worked construction, masonry, and farming jobs during the day. Jacob says, “I always have to do something—I just can’t sit around. So, I did that in the evenings.”

“My dad did it all his life, and I went to work with him as a little kid. I’ve always been doing it.”

Before opening his current business, Jacob operated a fiberglass shop on the side, as well. “I got called ‘Fiberglass Jake’ through that,” he laughs. “Made buggy parts, shafts, and canoes.”

He laughs, “I remember that I’d cut my fingers getting into his carving knives when I wasn’t supposed to.” Jacob says the first project he completed on his own was in eighth grade. “I had to draw a print and do a project, and that was my first piece.” He was about 15 years old at the time.

Although Jacob is a Jack-of-all-trades, he always enjoyed working with wood the most. “I loved construction, but I hated the commute and the drive. I strived to have a job at home. I can weld, but wood is so much nicer to work with.”

July 2015 Wabash Valley Living www.wabashvalleyliving.com

13

In 2000, Jacob opened French Township Wood Shop as his primary means of business. The shop sells a variety of beautiful, handmade pieces of wood furniture and home décor. Jacob’s son David is very involved in the business and plans on taking it over one day. David has inherited his dad’s talent for woodworking and is even more of a perfectionist than his father (if that’s possible). “David works very hard. He is always out here sanding and perfecting every detail.” French Township Wood Shop does mostly custom orders, but you can also find some of their pieces in town at Berne Trading Company, and also at Bunker Hill Variety Store in Geneva. The Wickeys also make candle bases for CR Design’s LastingLite candles. Jacob is quite talented in his craft and is capable of making almost any furniture item out of wood. Some of the more common pieces they sell include oak special-order cabinets and furniture, benches, china cupboards, chests of drawers, wall racks, floor racks, kitchen carts, and nightstands.

adfgadfgadadfgadfgad

14

French Township Wood Shop’s most popular product is its wall rack. The wall rack is made from oak, with two cupboard doors on top for spices and a pull-out rack for dishtowels. It can be used as a kitchen or bathroom rack. This product is an original design by French Township Wood Shop. They even make the dowel rods used in the racks. As a matter of fact, the Wickeys started building the wall racks because they had leftover wood that they wanted to repurpose instead of scrapping it. So, they fashioned these leftover pieces into dowel rods for the racks. Jacob says, “Some people ask for a piece of wood or scrap, and we say, ‘There’s no scrap here.’” According to Jacob, most of the designs they use for their furniture are unique to the company. “We do not copy others’ designs. Most of the stuff we make comes from our own ideas. And, we try to keep our price down so others can’t copy and undercut us.”

French Township Wood Shop also prides itself in the quality of the materials used in every product. They try to pick the finest pieces of wood and only choose reputable suppliers and partners. The types of wood they commonly use include poplar, oak, walnut, cherry and maple. Another unique product created at French Township Wood Shop is their wooden yo-yo. These qualityhandcrafted yo-yos feature a variety of attractive designs with a varnish finish. This timeless toy would make a perfect keepsake for a child of any age. The yo-yos can be found at Bunker Hill Variety Store or ordered through the Berne Trading Company. Bunker Hill Variety Store also sells them wholesale to other business in the area. Jacob and David created the wooden brochure racks that sit in the different branches of the bank. Whatever your furniture need, from beautifully-carved cribs to roll top desks to fireplace mantles, French Township Wood Shop can literally create almost anything out of wood. THE GENERAL STORE:

New Ways to Use Old Items Article and Photos by Jim Kirkwood

“R

educe, reuse, recycle”—sometimes k nown to e nv ir onme nt all yconscious shoppers as R3—is a concept of responsible consumer behavior. Freda Corwin, owner of The General Store in downtown Pennville, Indiana, believes there is another “R” that should be included with the original R3: “repurpose.”

that tired old piece in the landfill—it can be repurposed,” she says.

Freda and her husband, Neal have repurposed items small and large, giving them new life. Customers affirm her creative imagination as she finds new ways to use old items.

A native of the small Indiana community, Freda was in the last graduating class of Pennville High School. She retired after a fulfilling career in public service, which included being the Jay County Auditor and working as a court reporter in the Jay County Courts. Freda presently works for the local wastewater district three days a week.

“My goal is just to show people you can repurpose things. You don’t have to throw

“Neal likes to go to auctions,” Freda adds. “He finds things for the shop. And, if we don’t use them as-is, we repurpose the items and then offer them as, say, a plant holder or a birdhouse.”

While working full-time, Freda had been crafting birdhouses and wreaths, among other things, selling them on consignment at the Gathering House in Berne, Indiana. “That kind of thing was my stress reliever,” she laughs. When a former downtown auction house was offered for rent, Freda saw a chance to operate her own business—while bringing new life to a vacant building. There have been many changes in this small community, and the downtown area is not as busy as it once was. However, many customers are attracted by the visibility of The General Store right on State Road 1 and by the appeal of the store’s outdoor displays. The General Store is located in the IOOF building in the center of Pennville. There is quite a bit of local history in the building itself. The interior is quite spacious. At the back of the store, there is a workshop built by Neal, along with storage space. The old, beautiful, fully-functioning cash register certainly qualifies as a local antique. Freda knows its history: “It came from a local bank, where the Legion is.

“The IOOF owns this whole building. I had to guarantee that when I leave here, the register would remain here at the lodge hall.” Pointing to a display cabinet, Freda reports, “It came from an old Redkey dime store. Phil Stoltz, who operated the Yesteryear Restaurant in Redkey, had it in his barn.”

MORE SPACE?

At the rear of the main room stands a colorful, homey display of porch furniture and other items. Freda says, “When we came here, in 2009, I had a vision of making the area in the back like a little house. This display area, which Neal built for me, is like the porch of the house.” Not all items in the General Store are used or dated. Throughout the large store is a mix of old, repurposed, and re-imagined items along with newer and modern items.

DECATUR

There is a selection of artwork by country folk artist Billy Jacobs, along with a case of jewelry from a local artist. Freda has also placed a large assortment of new, braided rugs near the entrance.

SELF-STORAGE

“I do order things in from various places,” she says. “I try not to buy from overseas. I try to be authentic and carry items that are made locally.”

In fact, some merchandise comes from the couple’s son-in-law, Jeremy Knapschafer, who has a woodworking shop at his home. “He likes to work with wood and often makes stuff for me to sell.”

husband cut the legs down for me and it made into a nice coffee table.” She shows another item. “My husband made this bench. It was a bed, and the end of it is from a baby bed.” Often, a change of color is all that is needed for an old piece to regain its usefulness. “Sometimes we buy old furniture,” Freda says. “Here’s a piece that was painted red—it was an ugly piece. So, I repainted it and repurposed it.” As two shoppers browse the store, one exclaims, “So much to look at! Why, a person could spend days here, just looking around.” Freda enjoys her role at The General Store so much, she doesn’t really consider it a job. She especially loves meeting and working with customers. “I have people come from Fort Wayne, Marion—people who know I’m here, and they stop in. Others see the store as they pass through, and they tell their friends about us. “If we had more business, it would be more like a job,” she laughs. The General Store is a seasonal business which opens in the spring and closes shortly after Christmas. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. #

TRACY’S COUNTRY FLEA MARKET:

Auctions and a “Little Bit of Everything” Article and Photos by Dee Fisher

re you a bargain hunter? A garage saler? Someone who lives to see the word “sale” on a roadway sign? The flea market is where you can find that mostAmerican of things, a good deal. Albert LaFarge, author of the US Flea Market Directory, says, “Today’s American Flea Market is a modern version of a phenomenon that has endured throughout history in all civilized societies—wherever there is a high concentration of people, there will be market days when they assemble for the exchange of goods and services.” Some flea markets have become very organized, held on specific days of the week at particular hours. And some even have a permanent location and facilities.

Over 20 years ago, Floyd Tracy founded Tracy’s Country Flea Market at a location just outside the city limits of Van Wert, Ohio. He started with one building, and then added a second one to house antiques and collectibles. Floyd and his family business prospered over the years. About three-and-a-half years ago, Floyd approached his son, Gene, about taking over the flea market. After careful thought, Gene and his wife took over the flea market in October 2011, becoming full-time owners in October 2014. Under their watch, the market has grown, with many new vendors selling, well, “a little bit of everything,” explains Gene. “We’ve been in the area for 30 years, running both

our auction business and the flea market. People trust us to provide quality merchandise and service at reasonable rates.” The 7,50 0 -square foot building housing the flea market is filled with a wide assortment of merchandise, from collectibles to personal products and dry goods. The vendors there restock their shelves regularly, keeping the inventory full to bursting! Flea market items include: silver and turquoise jewelry, coins, knives, handmade quilts and afghans, toys, books, Nascar items, records, DVDs, CDs, games, tools, and sports cards. There is even a seamstress on site to create or alter items for you. Some local businesses with other locations have also rented space here, including Kitcheneez vendors, consultants representing Avon and Tupperware, and Mendon Jewels. The vendors at Tracy’s exhibit a huge range of consumer interests, from clothing for adults and children, to bulk candy and soft drinks, to vintage items and antiques to interesting collectibles, such as Coca-Cola items and trains.

The auctions are held at one end of the flea market building, which is open so you can also peruse the items in the days preceding each auction. “If you make me a good offer, I’ll sell anything, even if it’s not at the auction,” Gene laughs. “And, if you have anything to sell at the auction, I’ll come look at it— for free!”

“You can find listings of what’s coming up on the weekly sales by checking out our Facebook pages (the flea market and the auction service each have one!) or by going to our website.”

Home Furnishings

Tracy’s holds a consignment auction every Tuesday evening at 6:00. “You’ll find all sorts of items at the weekly auctions, from large appliances like refrigerators and generators to smaller items like coins and collectible baseball cards. We accept consignments as well as estate sales,” explains Gene.

“The two businesses (Tracy’s Country Flea Market and Tracy’s Auction Services) are really two sides of the same coin—providing quality merchandise to buyers, and helping folks with something to sell find those buyers. Dad started in the auction business about 30 years ago, and I grew up around it, so it was a natural fit for me!” Gene says.

SMALL-TOWN FRIENDLY & EXCEPTIONAL PRICES

Gene’s dad, Floyd, started his business as an auctioneer, and Gene has continued in his father’s footsteps. Over the past year, he has become licensed and bonded as an auctioneer in the state of Ohio.

ILLSHIRE

“We’re much more than a big garage sale. I guarantee you’ll find something that will pique your interest here,” Gene smiles. “We’re better than Ebay and have many more bargains than a department store.”

Tracy’s has several annual events that not only bring people out to their establishment, but also give back to the

community. “I grew up in Van Wert, and I feel responsible for making sure that we are helping out this community in some way,” Gene remarks. “All of our events are family-friendly and center around either a holiday or a community event.” On July 18, Tracy’s will celebrate their third annual Christmas in July. This event will feature lots of one-time vendors, rather like a large rummage sale, both inside and outside. Along with that, there’ll be a motorcycle poker run and a visit from Santa. This event will whet your appetite for the huge Route 127 Garage Sales a few weeks later. Tracy’s will again offer space inside their building and outside in the parking area for those one-time

vendors who want to take advantage of the crowds that travel up and down Route 127 every year during the first part of August. Tracy’s will be running this sale August 4 through 9, starting two days before the Route 127 sale is slated to begin. “There are people going up and down the highway all week, and we try to take advantage of that,” Gene explains.

St ar tin g th e we e ke n d b e f o r e Thanksgiving and continuing through the Christmas holidays, Trac y’s celebrates with the Holiday Kick-off Celebration. The main features of this event are two annual fundraisers: Teddy Bears for Santa and Snowflakes for Seniors. These benefit both the oldest and youngest generations during the holiday season. Rounding off the holiday events is the annual Easter Egg Hunt, usually held the weekend before or after Easter (depending on whether Easter is early or late). Literally thousands of plastic eggs with treats are hunted (and found!) by local children and families, and, of course, the Easter Bunny is the guest of honor! “We aim at being the one-stop-shop for all your needs. Believe me, if we don’t have it, you don’t need it!” Gene laughs. #

SAM’S ENGINE CLINIC:

Parts, Equipment and Engine Repair Article and Photos by Beth Steury

I

n the fall of 1975, Sam Hilty entered the world of lawn and garden equipment on a part-time basis as he continued working for both Economy Printing and Hitzer Stove in Berne. Sam set up shop at his residence on State Road 124 just west of Monroe, calling the business Sam’s Engine Clinic. “I put some letters on a piece of Formica and nailed it to the mailbox,” he remembers. A couple days later, he came home to find a garden rototiller parked in front of his house. Later that evening, Bobby Heller of Heller Nursery stopped by to claim the rototiller he hoped Sam would be able to repair. Bobby remained a loyal customer for many years. Sam soon began dealing in Briggs &

Stratton, Kohler, and Tecumseh parts. Three years later, he signed on as a Honda Power Equipment dealer. For a time, he also sold White Outdoor power equipment. These days, Sam limits his inventory to mowers, trimmers, rototillers and generators. Sam’s interest in engines was sparked by necessity. “When I started working at Economy Printing before I was married, I bought a lawn mower from Lloyd Neuenschwander at Farm and Home Center. Naturally, the first thing I did was hit something, and then, it wouldn’t start.” Lloyd guided Sam in repairing the sheared flywheel key. “I thought that was an easy fix,” he admits. The experience piqued his interest in working on engines.

Later, Sam purchased a tiller that didn’t work well. He purchased the necessary parts and was able to fix it himself. This growing interest in engines is what led him to open Sam’s Engine Clinic. A time came when Briggs & St r a t t o n r e q u i r e d certification to do warranty work on their equipment. In 2001, Sam passed the four to five-hour Master Service test to become classified as a Master Service Technician. Four years ago, the company required technicians to be re-certified, so he again took and passed the lengthy computerized test. Honda requires a less intensive test annually. “Sam moved the business three times,” reminisces his wife, Martha. An old block garage next to their home first housed the engine clinic. When the business outgrew that small space, he moved to the lean-to behind the barn. In 1986, when that building no longer met the growing business’ needs, he built the “shop” behind and to the west of the house. Although the current building has become crowded, Sam has no plans for further expansion.

In his 40 years of business, Sam has seen a lot of changes. “Back when I started, they had these little riding mowers that were like a 22-inch cut with only five horse-power. Now, zero turn radius mowers have from 18 to 35 horses.” The myriad of safety features now required on lawn equipment is another change in the lawn equipment industry. These additions, while a definite sign of progress, have created the potential for more equipment failures.

In general, repair s are more complicated now than when Sam began his business. But, the length of time needed to acquire parts for a necessary repair has decreased greatly with the aid of computerized ordering. Sam estimates that forty percent of his business comes from the sale of equipment, and the remaining sixty percent, from service. In the area of service and repair, Sam shares, “I go through about 600 pieces of equipment a year, on average.” Sam’s Engine Clinic will service any major brand of power equipment, as long as Sam can acquire the needed parts. He also sells parts for the following brands: Briggs & Stratton, Kohler, Tecumseh, Honda, M.T.D, Homelite and Lawn Boy. His parts inventory includes many sizes of belts, plugs and primer bulbs. When approached in the late 70s by the Honda sales rep about selling generators, Sam admits he thought, “I don’t know if I want those or not.” Back then, construction crews were the primary purchasers of generators for use on work sites without electricity. But, Sam’s decision to carry generators is one he doesn’t regret. “Generators are actually the biggest seller for me. I sell a lot of generators,” Sam states. In addition to home standby units from Briggs & Stratton, he sells a line of Honda generators that

Both home standby and portable generators have gained in popularity in recent years. “If I were building a new house for someone today, a standby generator would be part of the package,” Sam affirms. And, portable generators have become very popular with campers who like the convenience a portable power system lends to their camping experience. Honda’s line of very quiet-operating generators fits the situation nicely, especially as some campgrounds now enforce a noise ordinance. Sam appreciates the many customers he’s had the pleasure of serving over the years. “The amazing thing is, I get guys coming in who say to me, ‘I remember coming in when I wasn’t even tall enough to look over the counter’. “They are now adults with children of their own. It’s really something.” Sam always has time to talk to customers, especially about our Creator, whom he credits with making all of this possible. “I love to meet people. Always did. The most interesting part of meeting people is the spiritual part, the opportunities to talk about Christ. I love it.” You can check out Sam’s inventory of lawn and garden equipment and take advantage of his vast service experience from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. #

SHETLER’S HOUSEWARES:

Wholesaler Adds Retail Space Article and Photos by Beth Steury

ore than 30 years ago, William Shetler established Shetler’s Wholesale on County Road 450 East in Geneva, Indiana. “He started out selling watches in a catalog,” notes William’s son-in-law, Stephen. The mail-order business grew so large, William opted to sell the wholesale distribution company to Dennis Klopfenstein, of Bluf f ton, in 2001. Klopfenstein still operates the business today in Geneva. Following the sale of Shetler’s Wholesale, William launched a new wholesale business known as Shetler’s Housewares. He began importing stainless steel products in order

to supply retail stores with various kitchen and household products. William remained at the rural Geneva location until the completion of a new 10,000 square-foot warehouse-type building in 2014. Stephen and William then joined forces and moved Shetler’s Housewares to its current location on County Road 500 South in Berne, Indiana. “Years back, when William still owned and operated Shetler’s Wholesale, I worked for him,” Stephen remembers with a chuckle. Later, Stephen worked in construction before partnering with William in the familyoperated business.

Catalogs highlighting S h e t l e r ’s H o u s e w a r e s’ most popular items go out yearly to a growing list of retail establishments. The par tners attend several tradeshows each year, mostly in Pennsylvania and the Midwestern states. Large quantities of the products offered through the wholesale catalog are housed in the huge, likenew warehouse facility, a portion of which is insulated and used occasionally for church ser vices. Neatly organized and stacked in uniform rows, the inventory is readily available to fulfill customers’ orders. The south end of the building is specifically designed for easy access by the semi-trucks that transport one to two pallets of product each day. “We ship a lot by semi,” says Stephen. Other products are shipped via UPS and FedEx from a space in the middle of the building designated for that purpose. When thoughts and planning turned toward opening a retail store alongside the wholesale division, the Shetler family had to decide what products to carry. to carry products from the popular line of stainless steel housewares already marketed to wholesale customers. “Our stainless steel is our biggest seller—poppers, cookware sets, et cetera. And, coats were a big hit over winter,” states Stephen. Shetler’s Housewares’ large clock inventory includes various models from Rhythm and Seiko, as well as grandfather clocks by Howard Miller, for which delivery service is available. “The clocks draw a lot of people. They often comment they have never seen such beautiful clocks.” The wall clocks feature a face that opens and moves as one of multiple tunes plays. The musical selections on each clock usually include six Christmas tunes, six hymns, and six of some other style of music. “Some customers have trouble finding the one they want,” says Stephen, because of the many styles and musical selections available. “We have a lot of Christmas items, and at Christmas, we stock up on toys.” The Shetlers carry Ertl die-cast toys and collectibles, including John Deere farm machinery. In additional to stainless steel housewares, clocks, toys and a large selection of fabric, Shetler’s inventory includes boxed greeting cards, stationery, Amish apparel and a wide array of household items. The wholesale aspect of the business features a greater selection of stainless steel housewares, from cookware to steamers and juicers to noodle makers and a variety of utensils. A big seller from the catalog is the popcorn popper, featuring a flat lid, sandwich bottom and metal gears. While most catalog orders originate from the United States, Shetler’s occasionally makes international sales,

A much smaller warehouse area at the south end of the building, directly behind the retail store space, houses the retail inventory, including many extra bolts of fabric. The retail arm of Shetler’s Housewares will celebrate one year in business this October. “I like it,” states Stephen, whose primary focus is the retail portion of the company. “We have a great location.” Indeed, the location just north of town is very convenient for Berne residents. “We participated in the scavenger hunt,” shares Stephen, referring to the “Shop Local” event in May, sponsored by the Berne Chamber of Commerce. Stephen reports that many contest participants made the short trek from Berne to look for the hidden clock tower in the retail shop at Shetler’s. BRYANT COMBINE PARTS:

Keeping Farmers in the Field Article and Photos by Sylvia Marbach

R

aised in rural Pennville by an agriculturally-minded father, Ryan Davidson has, not surprisingly, harbored an interest for farming from childhood. During his youth, Ryan helped his parents out at the family-owned business, Bryant Combine Parts, which further deepened his fascination for all things ag-related. After graduate of Jay County High School, Ryan attended the University of Indianapolis to earn a bachelor’s degree in business management. Following his graduation in 2005, he began working with his father Randy full-time, using the skills he learned in college to enrich the family business. “I’ve just always been interested in the agriculture end of things,” Ryan says. His

college experience also brought a new set of tools to the table, including marketing and technology-related skills. “We updated our logo,” explains Ryan, “and we’re just getting ready to launch our new online store. We have a store now, but it’s through our suppliers. The web has been good for us. “We advertise in the popular papers. College helped me understand what to put in the ads to make the effective.” Ryan believes the integrity of his parents has greatly contributed to the success of the business. “[My dad taught me], if you say you’re going to do something, just do it. Follow through on it.

“If a customer leaves a message, and we don’t return their call, they’re not going to call us again. Trust and honesty are part of a successful business.” Even with an abundance of experience and education, success also requires hard work. In addition to Ryan and his father Randy, there are three other employees at Bryant Combine Parts. “We take customer calls, check to see if we have the parts in stock, and call them back,” Ryan says, explaining the duties at the shop. “We help the employees with salvaging parts and putting parts away.” Bryant Combine Parts sells both new and used combine parts. “We can get a lot of after-market stuff for hay equipment and tractors.” The shop carries a full line of Bush Hog equipment, as well as the Country Clipper zero-turn lawn mowers. “We answer general questions on our mowers and the Bush Hog equipment. “There’s always something to do—it makes the days go fast.” Bryant Combine Parts reaches a wide audience, with customers hailing from as far as Texas—and even the Ukraine. “You just never know, when that phone rings, where they’re calling from.”

For Ryan this is simply an opportunity to make connections with interesting people. “I enjoy working with and meeting new people. Talking to guys from different areas, you can learn stuff that you might never have known, otherwise. I enjoy that part of it.” Ryan adds that he values the friendships he’s made with his coworkers, as well. “We’ve got a good group of guys that work here, so it’s enjoyable to come every day. They’re good guys to work with.” According to Ryan, one challenge of the industry is how the changing seasons and rural surroundings dictate the amount of business is coming in. “In the fall, we’re trying to get parts off quick enough. Everybody’s in a hurry in the fall, and they want stuff yesterday, more or less. Getting everybody satisfied quickly is probably the toughest for us. As the weather cools, so does business. But, Ryan says they make good use of the slower winter months when farms are not up and running. “We bring the combines in, and we stripping them down, trying to get ready for next fall. We’re not as busy, but we’re working to make the next fall smoother.” In the fall, Ryan says many farmers e x p e r i e n ce e q uip m e nt b r e a kdowns. “Some guys do preventative maintenance before-season. That’s a good idea, but some stuff is unpreventable.” The industry has seen some major changes, even since Ryan began working full-time at Bryant Combine Parts. “Everything has just gotten a lot more technologically-advanced, and machines have gotten bigger. The combines are just more complicated.

“It used to be, you could just open a book up. Now, you’ve about got to use a computer.” Ryan adds that falling grain prices cause a spiked interest in used parts.

Br yant Combine Par ts has also expanded significantly. The Davidsons have added onto the business multiple times. “It’s hard to put a number on it, but we’ve grown a lot. We still get new customers.” Ryan is ready to help anyone who comes through the door. In general, he advises basing your purchase on the size of your farm. “Look at what best suits your operation, size-wise. There are differences in all the brands, so it’s just what best fits your operation.” Whether you live on a large farm or only have a backyard, Bryant Combine Parts may still make your list of places to shop, since they also sell lawn mowers. “The Country Clippers we sell have a patented stand-up deck, and that’s one feature we really like for maintenance.” Ryan says the goals for Bryant Combine Parts include continued success, as well as turning the business over to another family member in the future. “We’d like to keep it in the family,” he explains. “that’d make dad proud.” #
