Cruise Into an Era Gone By Article by Beth Steury, Photos by Ed Ferguson

ecatur natives and sisters Cristy Scott and Misty Jones, along with Misty’s husband Craig, are looking forward to their first summer as the new owners of Aunt Bee’s Drive-In, formerly Arnold’s Drive-In, located on US 27 in Decatur, Indiana. When Misty and her husband Craig Jones were approached with a business proposition concerning the restaurant where Misty had worked for ten years, they took the proposal to Cristy. “They wanted to know if I wanted to be part of it,” remembers Cristy. She readily agreed. The trio assumed ownership on December 1, operating the restaurant as Arnold’s. The first week of March 2015 saw the

establishment’s name changed to Aunt Bee’s Drive-In. “As a kid learning how to cook, my mom gave me Aunt Bee’s Mayberry Cookbook,” Cristy reminisces. “I watched the Andy Griffith show all the time when I was a kid.” The new management chose the name Aunt Bee’s to continue in the same era as portrayed in the sitcom “Happy Days,” whose iconic Arnold’s Drive-In inspired the original name. Cristy’s favorite recipe from Aunt Bee’s cookbook is the apple pie. Friends and family have urged her to add this allAmerican favorite to the restaurant’s menu.

“I haven’t started making the apple pie. They’ve been wanting it. So… maybe,” speculates Cristy. She admit s the time commitment required to make homemade apple pie is considerable. While Misty learned the ropes as a waitress at Arnold’s for 10 years, Cristy worked in retail and went to business school. Her only exposure to restaurant work came from bussing tables after school for her mom, who worked at 2 Brother’s Restaurant while the sisters were growing up. “I was fortunate that the former manager let me come and train and work before we took over the restaurant,” she admits. Cristy learned to cook first. “Next, I learned front line, and then, I was able to come out and waitress. I did that for two months.” Misty’s years of working at Arnold’s, combined with Cristy’s business experience have established a firm foundation for the business. Fans of the Arnold’s menu will be happy to know their favorites are still available at Aunt Bee’s, although some have new names. “We have all the same sandwiches and have added some new items.”

In honor of Cristy’s husband, Lyle, who passed away two years ago, a triple burger known as the “Big Lyle,” is a new addition to the menu, as is The Fats Burger, which includes a dollop of peanut butter. Cristy experimented until she came up with the Betty Page burger, a single hamburger patty on a seeded bun with pepper jack cheese, three strips of bacon, and grilled tomatoes, served with pickles. “It’s really taken off, more than we expected,” says Craig. “I’ve always liked Betty Page, the model,” admits Cristy. “I always thought she was just naturally gorgeous. We have Marilyn (Monroe) all over the place here in the restaurant, so why not pay some type of homage to Betty Page?” Arnold’s Fabulous Steak Burger is now Andy’s Famous Steak Burger—made exactly the same way. It ranks as the restaurant’s “number-one top-seller.” The tuna melt now boasts the name of Mayberry’s famous deputy Barney Fife. Craig’s Reuben and Misty’s Luau are also featured on the menu. Other sandwiches bearing the names of the sisters’ parents, Carl and Lynn Fore, as well as the Scotts’ children, Darton and Carley, give the establishment a cozy, family atmosphere. “We make sandwiches to order, so you can make up your own sandwich,” Craig adds. Customers may choose anything from the vast number of toppings offered. “Whatever you want on a sandwich.” “We are really famous for our milkshakes,” offers Cristy. “That’s our most popular dessert.” With the addition of three new flavors—coffee, watermelon and blue raspberry—Aunt Bee’s now offers 54

“ We’re planning to get some more Andy Griffith and Mayberry memorabilia,” Cristy says. Craig is hot on the trail of a 1948 Bubble truck—like the one owned by Goober, Mayberry’s infamous mechanic. He’s also keeping his eye out for a Ford Fairlane like the police car driven by Deputy Fife. Carhopping on the weekends began in mid-May. Once school dismisses for the summer, carhop service will be available every day, weather permitting. Cristy held car hop try-outs in April, postponed from an earlier date due to the unexpected snow in mid-March. “We set up cones out front. I pulled

Aunt Bee’s will host “The Mayberry Car & Truck Show” on June 26, with registration from 8 a.m. until noon. The day will include a 50/50 drawing, as well as door prizes and dash plaques. Awards will be presented at 3 p.m. From May through September, Aunt Bee’s will host a Cruise Night the first Thursday of each month beginning at 6 p.m. An event new to the restaurant, Bike Night will take place the second and fourth Tuesdays, again from May through September.

ABC REAL ESTATE & TRAVEL:

Making Vacation Wishes Come True Article by Beth Steury, Photos by Ed Ferguson

C

orey Af folder never dreamed a downturn in the housing market a few years ago would lead to the expansion of his business in such a profound way. Friends and acquaintances often stopped by his office at ABC Real Estate, Inc. in Decatur to seek his Disney knowledge. “They would ask me about Disney because we go all the time. They usually asked for advice.” In the summer of 2010, someone emailed him a link with information about representing Disney vacations. His initial response was, “I haven’t got time for this.” But, when the real estate market really slowed down over the next few months, Corey reconsidered. He then enrolled in the “Disney College of Knowledge” for the 60-hour online

training course to prepare for selling Disney vacations. The instruction involved learning about each park and resort, as well as gaining a thorough understanding of the “Disney difference”—how they do their theming, how they treat their people, the entire Disney experience. In 2011, the real estate business he’d established 11 years earlier became ABC Real Estate, Inc. & Travel. While most travel agents deal in a broad range of vacation options, Corey does not. “I only book Disney destinations, which are Disneyland, Disney World, Disney Cruise Line and Adventures by Disney. “As of January 1 this year, I became ‘earmarked,’ which means I’m an Authorized Disney Vacation Planner,” Corey says. This

designation was earned based on revenue over the past two years, and it affords him a few benefits he can pass on to his clients. His is one of the few brick-and-mortar stores across the country that exclusively book Disney vacations. It ’s not by accident that Corey’s office is plastered with memorabilia and posters featuring all the amenities a Disney vacation offers. “I immerse you in the Disney magic. You are hooked when you walk in,” he explains.

Wide World of Sports complex and more. “It’s beyond big. The size of Manhattan—47 square miles,” Corey marvels. While it’s true the internet has simplified the process of vacation planning, there’s a distinct advantage to using Corey to book your Disney vacation. While families can book their trip through Disney.com, Corey cautions, “You’re not getting anybody’s advice,” he cautions. “And, it will be as cheap or cheaper through me than anywhere else. “I’ve been to Disney World 30 times in the last ten years, so I can tell you the pros and cons of what to do, where to go, when to go, and where to eat. There are 320 eateries on the property, and I’ve been to all but a handful of them.” Several years ago, Corey went to Disneyland in California so he could share first-hand information about that property, as well. “I felt like I was walking in Walt’s footsteps, as that’s the only park he ever saw built,” reminisces Corey. “I didn’t book any Disney cruises until I had been on one myself,” he admits. To date, Corey’s been on three Disney cruises. “The ship was spotless all the time. State-of-the art entertainment. First run movies.

“They treat you like royalty,” he assures. “They will take care of your kids from age three on up (if potty-trained) from nine a.m. until one in the morning.” Corey hopes to experience one of the elite Adventures By Disney vacations at some point in the future. Stateside destinations, such as Alaska, San Francisco, New York City, Washington, D.C. and Nashville, are available, as well as overseas tours in Africa, Asia, Europe, Australia, and South America. According to AdventuresbyDisney. com, “When you travel to worldwide destinations on an Adventures by Disney vacation, you do much more than sightsee. You experience firsthand the people and cultures of the places you visit—and you do so with the service, VIP experiences and unique local opportunities you can only expect from Disney.” When asked how his fascination with all things Disney began, Corey shakes his head. “It’s just one of those things. Once you go, you get hooked. I look forward to every trip. It’s always something new.” The Affolder family’s first extended visit to Disney World took place when Corey’s oldest son was two. On a later trip, their younger son, then six weeks old, got his first haircut on Main Street in Disney’s Magic Kingdom—a trip the youngster doesn’t remember but one his family will never forget. Corey likes how the two aspects of his business blend, and he doesn’t foresee shifting to a travel-only or real estateonly business. When one part of the business slows a bit, the other often picks up. “Although, there’s never really a slow time for Disney,” Corey admits. “I have people in here to buy a house, and they come in six months later to book a trip to Disney, and vice versa. I’ve actually had people book a trip to Disney, then come in later and want me to sell their house.”

BLACKCREEK PEDDLER:

For Love of Rusty, Old Treasures Article and Photos by Dee Fisher

Definition of “antique”: Grandma had it. Mom threw it out. I bought it back. –Anonymous

A

ll things antique and vintage have been enjoying a renaissance in recent years. Small boutiques that specialize in vintage paraphernalia have blossomed on the Main Streets of towns across our country. Magazines, books, websites, television programs, and even podcasts about antiques have been created and are followed by avid collectors and antiquers. Three years ago, a new shop opened in Willshire’s downtown, riding on the crest of this fresh interest. Owner Jackie Caffee had been renting space in area shops and flea markets for years, acting much as an old-time peddler would have done to sell his goods. Since she was a resident of Blackcreek Township, Jackie decided to call her new

store Blackcreek Peddler. Now in its third season in the same downtown location, Blackcreek Peddler is open on a seasonal basis from the first week of April through the end of the year on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Jackie’s interests in retail business and antiques run deep in her own history. By her account, she has worked in retail stores off and on since she was twelve years old. “I started working at a produce stand on weekends [in the summer] close to the lake where my parents had a cottage,” Jackie related. “I have always enjoyed retail selling. “My interest in antiques comes from my mother and grandmother, who were antiquers from way back. It seemed natural

for me to move into selling vintage things.” Jackie cautioned, “However, I am not an appraiser, nor do I claim to be an antiques expert. I am constantly learning from other collectors.” The size of Blackcreek Peddler’s store is not overwhelming, but every inch is neatly utilized in displaying its wares. “The demand for different types of antique items seems to run in cycles. What is popular and collectible one year collects dust the next. “At Blackcreek Peddler, we try to keep a good variety of all types of vintage things,” Jackie said. “It seems that the ver y old primitive-style items are what people are buying now. They want old and rusty pieces, maybe even a little broken or chipped–items with character. We try to get those types of pieces in, along with the antiques in pristine or near-perfect condition.” Along with pieces that are truly antique, Jackie also supplies new items that have a vintage look and some repurposed vintage pieces. “Outside the store’s entrance are several items that can be used as garden art. For instance, I carry new garden stakes–some homemade– that have a folk art look to them,” Jackie explained. “I like to occasionally repurpose old and interesting items. Old containers become planters, old graniteware becomes wind chimes or birdhouses. We’ve made garden stakes from dishes, and coat racks from old cribs and beds. This is when I get creative and have fun!” Jackie exclaimed.

The building that houses Blackcreek Peddler is on the site of a former hotel, which was demolished many years ago. The current building has been many things, including an ice cream shop.

“Blackcreek Peddler also does some consigning with local artists. There are many homemade items made right here in the Willshire area available in the store, such as candies, crocheted scarves, gloves, and hats, hand-sewn items, soaps and birdhouses. These are all available from the first of October through Christmas, just in time for holiday gift-giving,” Jackie explained.

SMALL-TOWN FRIENDLY & EXCEPTIONAL PRICES

“I try to keep vintage decor items in stock that would make nice gifts and also compliment any country or primitive decor styles,” Jackie comme nte d. A lon g w ith this , Blackcreek Peddler offers live hanging floral baskets beginning the first of May, as well as mums and pumpkins in the fall.

ILLSHIRE

Once one enters the store, that same tension of old and new continues. Blackcreek Peddler carries many new folk art-style items, including wax candles, stars made of metal or vines, garlands, wreathes, vintagelooking signs and plaques, and floral arrangements. There are also several LED battery-operated taper and pillar candles, as well as tea lights, sold with or without wood and metal candle holders.

There is a rather large back room that is a storage room at the moment, where Jackie cleans and readies her wares for display. “I hope to open the back room soon to help expand the selling area of the shop. The shop is small, and I try to use every inch for displays. “Sometimes I have to get very creative with how I place items! Opening up the back room will help me to bring in more pieces that people have been asking about!”

Jackie Caffee is a lady who truly enjoys her work. “The customers who have shopped at Blackcreek Peddler have all been quite interesting. I have learned so much from them all, especially from the many collectors and professional antiquers who come in.

“Antiquing is a hobby I share in common with my husband, Jeff, and I am blessed to have his help and the support of my family. “At the Blackcreek Peddler, we have always loved rusty, worn and old items, treasures that have been passed down from generation to generation. We are forever learning about our history and what once was. “Come visit and learn about the past along with us!” Jackie smiled at me and turned back into the displays of our past, which have become her present and future. #

CLASSICS PLUS AUTO SALES:

Late-Model Cars, Motorcycles & More Article and Photos by Sylvia Marbach

ryan Grimm, Berne native and father of four, says, “I love cars.” And, as the owner of Classics Plus Auto Sales, he’s happy to earn a living from the same. According to Bryan, he grew up surrounded by cars and was immersed in the automotive business from a young age. “My dad had a repair business,” he explains. As a teenager, Bryan helped out at his father’s shop. He recalls, “I worked parttime at a factory for a year and hated that. I made good money, but I came right back to helping dad. Bryan’s father, Gene, was extremely shy, so he preferred spending his time working on cars, rather than chatting with customers.

“He could never sit and talk with someone or sell a car–that just wasn’t him,” says Bryan. Gene’s close friend, Bill Wulliman, was more outgoing. “Bill said ‘If you rent the building, I’ll rent the back lot off of you. I’ll sell cars back there, and you can do the work on them.’” The arrangement worked out well for both of them–and for Gene’s boys. “My brother and I did most of the scheduling, and my dad just worked on cars. Then, I decided I didn’t like to get dirty, and I started following Bill around. I helped him buy sell cars and shied away from helping my dad.” As graduation approached, Bryan didn’t have any particular career in mind. “When

my brother and I got out of high school, we said, ‘You know what? We could start our own business and make more money.’ “My dad said, ‘I’ll furnish the money if you guys run it.’” Bryan and his brother left their dad’s shop near the intersection of US Highway 27 and State Road 218 for a location only one block to the south on Franklin Street. “We bought this building in 1990, so we’ve been here for 25 years now. “We started out selling classic cars–that’s why the name is Classics Plus. And then, classic cars got so expensive, we just couldn’t afford to stay in that, so we went to latemodel cars and motorcycles. There’s more money in the late-model with the faster turn-over.” Bryan says his father helped instill in him the importance of integrity, which can be difficult to find in today’s world. “My dad always said, ‘Just tell people the truth–if their car’s junk, it’s junk. If you look at their application, and they don’t have enough money, then they don’t have enough money to buy the car. “’Don’t sell them something they can’t afford.’” This lack of conviction in some used car dealers gives others in the business a bad name.

For those looking to purchase a car, Bryan’s advice is: read the fine print and be careful. “It’s too bad that local people are going to Fort Wayne to buy cars, and they get taken advantage of so badly, especially with the financing. They don’t read the paperwork– they walk in and say, ‘I really like that car. How much a month is it?’ “Then the dealer does the paperwork and fits them into that payment, and two years after they have the car, they realize they’re paying 17% interest. I could’ve gotten them the same car for 8%. “All people hear is, ‘It’s only $50 a month,’ and they can’t get a loan, so they go up there. That’s what’s tough.” Although he wasn’t interested in the repair business, Bryan and the Classics Plus

employees, including Bryan’s oldest son Cody, do offer a short menu of automotive services, as well. “We do a lot of auto detailing, cleaning up. The cars we buy have to be ready to sell. “So, there’s always something going on. We’re cleaning cars and talking to people and trying to buy cars for the lot. We also do window tinting and dent removal.” Surprisingly, the busiest shopping season of the year is also the most active sales period for Classics Plus. “Christmas time is my busiest time,” says Bryan. “You would think it would be tax time, but it’s really not. “November and December are my two busiest months. I’ve talked to other dealers, and they say the same thing. People must just be in the buying mood.” But, after the holidays, sales drop off with the arrival of cold, snowy weather. “When it’s really slow, I buy cars that need a lot of cleaning. In the winter, I stock up. I try to buy 20 or 25 cars, starting in October. “I’ll put them in storage, and, one at a time, bring them here to get them ready. That gives us something to do, because nobody wants their car washed and waxed in the dead of winter.” The lot at Classics Plus isn’t as big as some, but it fits Bryan’s business strategy. He explains, “So many dealers tell me to buy a lot of cars, but I try to keep 25 cars or less. If you keep it simple, it’s easier to manage. And, you can buy nicer stuff.”

Bryan warns that although a vehicle might appear reasonably-priced, buyers should keep an eye out for high interest rates. He also suggests shoppers avoid being too particular about the appearance of a used car, especially when price is a factor. “People think that everything on a car is going to be perfect. If it’s used, it’s not going to be.” In spite of increasing automotive prices, Bryan enjoys his work. One of his favorite tasks is completely changing a car’s appearance with a bit of elbow grease. “I like to work on the outside,” he explains. “Take a car that’s really nasty and make it look nice. It’s kind of a challenge.” Whether you’re looking to purchase a late-model car, or it’s time to correct the wear and tear from winter weather, Bryan is happy to help. Classics Auto Plus, located on West Franklin Street in Berne, offers cars and detailing services at a reasonable price and should be the first place you stop if you need tinted windows–or, if you’re shopping for a motorcycle. #

SASSAFRAS ON MAIN:

Distinctly Unique Dining Article by Tiffany Schortgen

D

igging sassafras root for tea was a childhood tradition for Sue Kristek, one she likely did not realize would have such significant meaning in her life. With a happy tear, she recalls the times when she and her father would go out to dig sassafras root for tea when guests would stop by. Sue recalls, “At the time, it wasn’t a big deal because everyone we knew had sassafras tea in the springtime.” But, this small tradition made a big impact for Sue and her husband Chuck when it came to naming their restaurant Sassafras on Main. They wanted the restaurant’s name to have meaning, yet also to reflect the unique quality of their menu selections. When the name came to them, they knew it was a perfect fit. While sassafras symbolizes a deeply-”rooted” family tradition for

the Kristeks, it also represents a perfect metaphor for the delectable cuisine offered at their restaurant—which can be aptly described as having an aromatic flavor as distinct as the leaves of a sassafras tree. Sassafras’ menu selections offer unique twists on traditional fare and are culmination of recipes Chuck has crafted during his 30-plus years as a chef. From their Cajun Fettuccini (Fettuccini with grilled chicken and Andouille sausage in a Cajun cream sauce) to their crowd-favorite Poblano Soup (brought back from a trip to Mexico), the menu at Sassafras on Main is filled with a variety of ethnic influences, as well. Sue softly boasts that Chuck has the unique ability to recreate nearly any dish simply by taste. Often times, if they love a new dish they’ve tried during their travels, they will bring it back to the restaurant.

Chuck loved cooking from a young age and drove his mother crazy, at times, with his insistence on “feeding the world.” Chuck laughs, “She wasn’t so happy when she found out I had invited my kindergarten teacher over for dinner, and the menu was to be herb-stuffed, rolled pork loin.” Though Chuck didn’t go to culinary school, he has certainly earned his stripes as a master chef. “I went to school to be an accountant but wasn’t fulfilled behind a desk, so I went into the wild world of restaurants and started from the bottom, basically.” Chuck began as a dishwasher and climbed his way to the top, eventually becoming a chef at the prestigious Drake Hotel in Chicago. More recently, Chuck was a general manager for big names like Panera Bread and Cheddar’s Casual Café. While Chuck sought out a career in the restaurant business, Sue discovered her calling to the food industry when her path collided with Chuck’s many years ago. Chuck says, “As soon as I saw her, I was head over heels.” Shortly after, the two were married. And as general manager at various restaurants, Chuck would call on his wife whenever he needed help. “If someone wouldn’t show up or something, I always knew I could count on Sue.” Meanwhile, Sue worked various jobs in the service industry until a few years ago, when they together decided to follow Chuck’s dream of operating his own restaurant. Sue says with a

smile, “I came to help him open, and here I am. I’m still here.”

FUN in the SUN!

This lovely duo complements one another perfectly in running the restaurant. While Chuck is a superb chef with decades of culinary experience, Sue gives personality and verve to the front end of the restaurant. Sue loves working with people, and it shows through in her interactions with them. “Our customers are like family. We’ve laughed with our customers and cried with customers.” And as a small business, their staff is also a closeknit group. “We couldn’t do it without them. Our staff is amazing.” Sassafras on Main’s facility and surroundings add to its personality, as well. The fine eatery is seated in an old Victorian mansion, brimming with beautifully ornate décor. A focal point is the gorgeous gold, tin-stamped ceiling rescued from the chamber of commerce building in Bluffton. It also has the type of grand entryway you would expect in a mansion built in 1902, adorned with a massive lowhanging chandelier and open staircase.

What’s more, the expansive ballroom of this mansion lends a stunning setting for a wedding reception, banquet or large party. The Kristeks are also in the beginning stages of renovating the bar area within the ballroom, which will only enhance the character of this charming venue. Sassafras on Main offers a variety of banquet and catering services and could accommodate almost any large group need. The banquet and catering menu has over a dozen, flavorful entrée choices, from stuffed Cornish hens to Chuck’s signature smoked brisket, which marinates for four days and then is smoked and slow-cooked for 18 hours. This menu includes an array of salad, side and desert choices, all made from scratch in-house.

They shop local farmers markets whenever possible and purchase locally-raised beef. “We’re a from-scratch restaurant here,” says Sue. “We don’t buy any processed foods at all.” Entrée prices range from $6.99 for the hand-breaded Pork Tenderloin Sandwich to $19.99 for the 14 oz Ribeye. From the farm-fresh food, to a unique variety of craft beer and specialty wines, to the charming old-world décor, every ounce of Sassafras on Main is supremely distinct. MATT GLENTZER:

Young Professional of the Year Article and Photos by Jim Kirkwood

T

alk to almost anybody in Portland, Indiana about young Jay County business professionals, and the name Matt Glentzer would surely be part of the conversation. Somebody would certainly remark that his stint as Campaign Chair of the Jay County United Way for the past two years, or his service on the Jay County Chamber Board of Directors, are examples of the way Matt is making a contribution to the community. Earlier this year, Matt was awarded the Jay County Chamber’s “Young Professional of the Year” award. This honor is bestowed upon an individual between the ages of 21 and 40 who has demonstrated “excellence,

creativity and initiative in their business or profession,” provided “valuable service to Jay County through community involvement,” or served as a role model “for young leaders, both personally and professionally.” Perhaps Matt fits all three criteria. Matt is a graduate of Jay County High School. He attended both Ball State University and Ivy Tech from 2002 to 2005. In 2007, he and his wife Jenny were married. Today, Matt is a licensed real estate agent and has been a member of “Team Tarter” in Portland since 2012. Tarter Realty, Auction & Appraisal Co. serves six counties in east central Indiana and, as such, competes with Remax, Berkshire Hathaway, Coldwell Banker

and many other nationallyrecognized companies. Matt proudly notes, “This past year, I believe our company was number four (in the region). I’m in the top 20 in sales, another broker in our company is in the top 7.” Most Portland and Berne residents are familiar with the unmistakable NAPA sign, which dominates both NAPA Auto Parts stores. Portland Motor Parts, Inc. owns and manages both, and Matt took over ownership of the corporation around the same time he entered the world of real estate sales. Matt began working with his father at the store in Portland when he was 15. “I wanted a car, so I was cleaning bathrooms and washing windows. I worked from the ground up.” When Matt went to college, he found work at the Horizon Center in Muncie. “I got paid and I also got fed,” remembers Matt. “You know, as a college student, a free meal and a paycheck are all-important.” Matt says he learned “how to listen to people, help people out,” and the importance of “just doing your job.” “When Jenny and I came back to Portland in 2008,” he says, “we decided we would make a commitment to the community, to do whatever we can to help continue what is going on and to help improve it in any way we can. We want to raise our children here, and we want it to be a good home for them and for everybody else.” Matt went back to work with his father, and he continues to do outside sales for Portland and South Adams Motor Parts. He was named Fort Wayne NAPA Salesman of the Year in 2007. Matt was also recognized as a NAPA 5-Star Service Award Winner in 2006 through 2008 and in 2010. “NAPA has strict criteria for sales growth and a number of other things,” Matt explains.

We are still growing at two to five percent.” According to Matt, “There is a kind of brotherly bond and a respect for other NAPA owners.” It is not unusual for him or outside sales people to go to other stores to help them get orders filled. Matt says, “It really just comes back to service.

No person becomes a success on his or her own. Matt acknowledges, first of all, his father. “My dad has been great,” he says. Matt also recognizes the contributions of his store managers. “They have been a great help, and they do a really good job. Curt McLaughlin has been with us for about 7 years in Portland and has been in the industry for more than 30 years. “Jason Stewart at the Berne store has been with us for about 5 years. They are a big part of our team, and we wouldn’t be where we are without them.” Others who have helped Matt along the way include former chamber director Vicki Tague and WPGW General Manager John Boggs, as well as Dean Sanders, the present chamber director. “Getting involved with the Jay County Chamber of Commerce has been a great experience,” says Matt. “I’ve found it is very important to build relationships with people. Our businesses have been more about relationships than simply selling real estate or auto parts.” As a student at Jay County High School, Matt was very active in athletics, including swimming, cross country, track, football and golf. His competitive nature carries over into his work, especially in sales. He says,
