Williams Auto Parts:
Hundreds of Cars Recycled Annually Article by Jim Kirkwood
W
illiams Auto Parts is located on the south edge of Portland, Indiana. It is a true family business. Rocky Williams says with pride, “My grandfather, Roger Williams, started it in 1951, right across the road from our present location.” In the beginning the business was an auto repair shop. “Grandpa worked on radiators, and Dad worked on rebuilding transmissions. “Grandpa showed me how to work on radiators,” notes Rocky. “I did that type of work for about 15 to 20 years. Working on
radiators with copper and brass got to be where it wasn’t healthy, so we decided to change our business strategy. “We sell used auto parts,” says Rocky. “That’s what we do. We sell engines, or anything— tires, transmissions, radios—anything you want for your car.” Over the years, the business turned from auto repair and towing into a very modern, Internet savvy, used auto parts establishment. It passed from Roger to Rocky’s father, Edward, and then to Rocky

himself, who manages the business with the help of his wife, Lisa. Lisa and Rocky were high school sweethearts, getting married shor tly af ter graduating from Jay County High School—Rocky in 1979, Lisa in 1980. “I was in the first class to go through Jay County High School,” says Rocky. “Lisa and I started working together in 1997.” At that time, all records were kept with pen and paper. Nowadays, “Lisa puts all information in the computer.” This information is used to keep careful inventory records and is also used on their website where customers can search for the parts they need. Rocky explains, “When we get a car in, I do an inventory and price each part. I go through the car and mark every part. Then, I write a description for each of them and attach a card with a coded number. “Finally, one of the workers pulls the part from the car, and it is placed on racks or on the floor with similar items.” It is astounding
how many parts are inventoried, stored, and kept within this closely defined system. Lisa manages the office and is the only woman on the staff now. Their daughter, Hannah, worked alongside Lisa through high school and college.

Williams Auto Parts employs nine people, most of whom work directly with the used parts in one way or another. Workers pull the parts from the cars, get them ready for sale and take them to the proper storage locations. “We buy the wrecked or otherwise damaged cars and bring them in here in the building attached to the office,” says Rocky. “Our son, Heath, who is fourth generation in this business, does most of the buying now.

“He and John Taylor are responsible for buying and selling.” Taylor, now 35, began working for Williams Auto Parts while still in high school. Many of the cars purchased by Williams Auto Parts come from online auctions. Others come from insurance companies. Rocky notes, “We almost never see the owners of these cars, but occasionally, I do buy from an individual. Some people are attached to their cars, and it is kind of a sad thing when they sell them. “We do buy newer cars, some almost brand-new. For most of the cars we get, we don’t know the story as to how they got wrecked, but we try to piece it out as we clean the cars and pull the parts.” Modern automobiles are large and complex, with many different interrelated parts and systems. The process of obtaining parts from these cars is also very systematized. The process of selling these parts is the crux of the business. A customer might be either an individual or an auto repair business. For example, if a repair shop is looking for an engine for a particular vehicle, they will find a list of engines that will fit that vehicle.

When a customer finds the part they need online, they call and order it. Each day, Rocky delivers parts to customers throughout the local region, including Fort Wayne and Indianapolis, as well as to many auto repair businesses in smaller towns. The company also uses commercial shipping companies to cover a larger geographical area of customers. Everything that comes in to Williams Auto Parts eventually leaves the lots. “We sell almost everything,” Rocky explains. “That includes wiring, air bags, radios, car computers, and tires.” The business takes in over 300 cars per year. After the vehicles have been stripped of mechanical parts, they are taken to Williams Auto Parts’ large lot about five miles south of Portland. A Google aerial photo of that lot shows a very well-organized, neat, and clean inventory of perhaps more than 1,000 vehicles. All drives are paved with stone chips and bordered with grass, which Rocky himself mows all summer.

Van Wert Carts & More:
When Recreation Becomes Business Article by Dee Fisher
M
ike Niese is an old hand at camping. During his youth, he went on many camping trips with his family, and he continued the tradition once he and his wife Lori began their own family. Many times, as they strolled around campgrounds, Mike and Lori remarked to one another that owning a campground was something they could see themselves doing. But, the timing never seemed right. A native of Putnam County, Mike was working in Napoleon, Ohio when a friend
mentioned that a campground in Van Wert County that might be for sale soon. Mike and Lori were interested enough to contact the Huggy Bear Campground’s current owners, who had not even listed the property at that point. Almost before they knew it, the Nieses had become the proud owners of the campground near Middle Point, Ohio! Together, Mike and Lori worked at making their mark on the campground, renovating the grounds and eventually adding camper sales.

Fast forward about sixteen years. Another business of interest to the couple came up for sale. Talk about serendipity! The Nieses purchased Warehouse on Wheels, a golf cart and covered trailer business, and made it part of the Huggy Bear universe. Then, just a couple years ago, the final piece fell into place. A local lumber and home building business moved out of a property situated at State Road 127 and U.S. Route 30—a prime commercial location on the north side of Van Wert. A little investigation and a lot of paperwork later, the Nieses had purchased that property, as well. “Things just fell into place,” Mike smiles. “I had been selling campers and renting and selling golf carts at the campground for a while, and, when the time was right, we decided to branch out into another location for that part of our business.” Van Wert Carts & More opened in the former Carter Lumber building in July 2014 as a one-
stop shop for camping and campground equipment and accessories. On display in the heated showroom, there are carts of different sizes and colors, some with oversize tires and extra seats, that would make the most discriminating camper proud!

the campground business. When he opened at the new location two summers ago, Mike brought some of the trailers he currently stocked (Salem and Sierra brands) and has since added Forest River’s Surveyor models to the inventory. Available for perusal on the lot are travel trailers of various sizes, fifth wheels, and even a few park models. If your rig is in need of repair, Mike’s service bays can accommodate you and get you back to the campground quickly. “Being located on the crossroads of two highways has brought in some business from out of the area,” Mike confides. “We’ve done repairs on motor homes and campers that have broken down while passing through. Loren’s Body Shop:
Getting Drivers Back on the Road Article by Kristi Searles
Y
ou’re waiting at a stoplight when you see a car approaching behind you. The driver obviously wasn’t paying attention to the road, and he’s having trouble stopping on the slick, wet pavement. As his car slides toward yours, you cringe and frantically look for a way to avoid being struck. But, you’re stuck behind another vehicle with nowhere to go. You feel sick to your stomach as the impact jolts your body, but you are thankful to realize the accident is a minor one. Then, you groan, thinking of the headaches that will
follow…contacting your insurance company, scheduling repairs, trying to get by without your car for a week or so… If only there were a body shop nearby offering “worry-free” repairs to get you back on the road as quickly as possible. Loren’s Body Shop has been offering quality repairs in Bluffton, Indiana since the company was first established by Loren Lobsiger in 1951. His sons, Floyd and Denny, took over the body shop in 1976. Today, Loren’s grandson, Greg Lobsiger, is its thirdgeneration owner.

“I remember running through this shop when I was just a little tyke,” laughs Greg. “They always called me ‘Shorty!’” Greg began working at Loren’s Body Shop in 1985. He recalls, “In high school, I worked nights and most weekends for my uncles. I continued to work with my Uncle Floyd in 2000 when my Uncle Denny retired.” Floyd retired in 2005, and Greg has been running Loren’s ever since. He’s planning a major expansion that will double the size of the current location. Greg’s brother, Rick, joined the business and has worked alongside him since 2010.

“You’re always doing something different, which is what makes it fun. It’s an art.” Including the Lobsiger brothers, Loren’s Body Shop currently employs nine technicians. “In order for my shop to run efficiently,” Greg says, “it requires a team that works well together with great attitudes, rigorous skill, hard work, and a love for cars.” Greg feels that being a team player is so important, he regularly sends his mechanics to team-building conferences. “It’s an investment, because I want a growing team who stays with me. I have technicians that have been with us for four to six years.” Together, the team of technicians is currently working towards I-CAR Gold Class shop certification. This is the highest role-relevant training achievement that may be earned and recognized by the collision repair industry. Loren’s Body Shop typically has 13 cars rotating in and out for service. Greg admits, “It takes quite a bit on our part to manage the inventory in the administration and the shop floor to keep the cars flowing.” Loren’s Body Shop has partnered with Enterprise to provide rentals onsite for its customers. “One way we can help our customers out is to provide them with a rental car. Here in Bluffton, we know there isn’t a local place to rent a car. We want to make it easier for our customers. “In fact, I track my length of rentals on their website, and we have the lowest length of rental in the state of Indiana because we turn over cars so fast.” The average turn-around for repairs on the cars that come in is just four days! The shop’s ability to negotiate and work with insurance companies is another big key to its success. “In this business, it isn’t just us working with the customer,” Greg advises. “We

Loren’s Body Shop works with all insurance companies, as well as customers who prefer self-pay. The Lobsigers have built a strong relationship with most insurance companies, so insurers tend to trust Loren’s when the staff deems a car to be totaled. Periodically, Greg travels across the country to gather with other peers in the body shop business. Together, members of this peer group learn and lean on one another’s knowledge to help their own businesses grow. “Sometimes, we call each other and ask for advice or tips when we need to figure out a problem,” Greg adds. “It can be a frustrating business. To be successful, you have to find ways to make it efficient, along with being a great negotiator.” Greg’s favorite part of the job is working with the customers and making them happy. He smiles. “It’s my passion, and I love working on cars!” No matter what shape your car is in, Loren’s Body Shop is ready for the challenge. The staff takes pride in its work and will stand behind the finished product. Loren’s is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Geels Backhoe Service:
Digging through Family History Article by Beth Steury
R
aised on a farm, Kenny Geels grew up learning how to cultivate the earth. He also spent a good deal of time digging in the dirt. Kenny’s father farmed and cared for the cemetery near their home until Kenny was 14 years old. At that time, the family moved into the house Kenny’s own grandfather had built on his farm outside Decatur, Indiana on U.S. Highway 224. “As soon as we were old enough to push in the clutch, we were in the fields,” Kenny recalls. The young man and his brothers learned to farm and later worked for their
father at the concrete factory in Decatur, making burial vaults and septic tanks. Having dug some 700 graves in the area by hand, Kenny’s father decided to purchase a backhoe. When Kenny was 19, he began operating the large piece of equipment, helping his father dig graves. They called their custom digging company Geels Backhoe Service LLC. “This job found me,” admits Kenny. Since he had no idea what career he wanted to pursue upon graduation from high school, Kenny continued working alongside his father.

“I like to joke about not b e in g a n un e d u c a te d ditch-digger.” Grinning, he explains, “I have a P. H. D.—a post-hole digger.” Kenny took over the family business in 1978. His wife Lynn manages the office for Geels Backhoe Service. Kenny began his tenure at the helm of Geels Backhoe Ser vice with a Massey Ferguson backhoe tractor. “I wore that out, then bought a Case backhoe tractor and wore that out, too.” He retired several other pieces of equipment over the years. “Last year, I bought a 590 Super M Case backhoe tractor and a E 63 Bobcat mini-excavator.” Kenny owns a 455 G John Deere crawler loader, as well, and as needed, he rents other pieces of equipment. What type of jobs does he tackle? “Just about everything,” says Kenny. The jobs vary from basements, footers, driveways, downspouts and geo-thermal units to graves, ponds, septic tanks, sewer lines and systems, and any type of underground repairs, as well as concrete removal and demolition.
Kenny smiles, “The most unusual thing I ever dug up was a horse I’d buried the year before. The owners needed to check the horse’s lineage, and they needed DNA. So, I dug it back up. “I bury a horse about every other month,” he adds. “If you need something dug, Kenny can do it,” assures Lynn. During winter months, the frozen ground does not hamper Kenny’s equipment as

one might expect. “I can dig through asphalt,” he points out. “In fact, frost is good because we don’t leave ruts, and it’s not muddy. So, winter does have its advantages.” When the ground is soft, planking is hauled in to protect against tearing up the property. If a company like Geels Backhoe Services isn’t busy in the winter months, Kenny says it’s “only because we aren’t willing to brave the cold.” He adds, “I’ve got more work than I can do. “We go out in any type of weather (it was 4 degrees the day of this interview) if we have to, to dig a grave—or, if someone had a water line break and a geyser in the yard. Dead men don’t wait.” In past years, Kenny dug graves for all the local cemeteries, but more recently, some have purchased their own equipment. And, the fact that more people are choosing cremation has greatly influenced the number of grave digging work orders he receives. “For 30 years, I averaged a grave every other day. Now, it’s down to a couple a month.” Digging jobs of any kind became scarce in 2008 when gas prices shot up. The slow spell lasted a couple of years. Lynn went to work for the county auditor’s office, in addition to her duties at Geels Backhoe Service. Custom digging isn’t the only thing that runs in the Geels family. “Dad was a world-class fiddle player,” explains Kenny. “He and his sisters had a band, the Geels Family Band. They originally played country and western, then later switched to bluegrass.” Although Kenny and his siblings had little interest in music while growing up, about 25 years ago, a group of relatives began meeting at Kenny’s brother’s home on Friday nights for

informal jam sessions. The group varies from week to week, but the self-taught musicians gather “every Friday night, no matter what.” Kenny plays the five-stringed banjo and dabbles a bit with the guitar. Others play mandolin, fiddle, guitar, bass fiddle and ukulele. The group revived the name “Geels Family Band” for their performances at nursing homes, local festivals and benefits. In 2013, Kenny and Lynn built a home on the back portion of his grandfather’s 88-acre farm. Kenny’s nephew Dan Burgin, an employee of Geels Backhoe Service, lives on the front section of the property in the home where Kenny spent some of his teenage years. The farm has been designated a “Hoosier Homestead Farm”—an honor bestowed by the Indiana State Department of Agriculture that recognizes farms owned by the same family for 100 years or more. Reflecting on his career in earthmoving, Kenny shares, “I’m thinking about retiring. It’s a young man’s business.” Even with the heav y mechanical equipment, it’s a very physical job. Although Kenny enjoys being outdoors, the changes in the weather bother his arthritis. “This job’s found me out in the very worst of weather, as well as the very best of weather.”

Rupp Enterprises:
Service Changes with the Seasons Article by Jaci Gorrell
W
hen Matt Rupp laid the foundation for Rupp Enterprises seven years ago, he discovered the secret to making each day of work a great one. The solution, which came to him after he had dabbled in a line of work that wasn’t his style, was simple; pursue what you love as a career. For Matt, this meant cars, boats, public service, and more.
so I passed flyers around and rode my bike with buckets to people’s houses and cleaned their cars.”
According to Matt, his love for automobiles can be traced back to when he first became interested in earning a little cash. He explains, “When I was 13 years old, I started Matt’s Car Care. My family had just moved to Berne, and I needed something to do,
Despite his work experience, when it came time for graduation, Matt decided he would pursue a business degree in college.
Starting at age 14, Matt further explored and pursued his automotive interests. He worked for CMA Truck and Auto Sales at Simon’s Manufacturing throughout high school.
“I have a bachelor’s degree in business administration in human resources (HR)

marketing. I got a job with that out of college and worked as a payroll and HR consultant for a company and hated it.” It wasn’t until 2009 that Matt decided to realign his work with his heart. He continues, “After I went to college and found out I didn’t really like the ‘suit’ job, I kind of veered back into messing around with cars again.” While officially organizing his business, Matt decided to include more than just automotive work, making Rupp Enterprises a true menagerie of services. In a nutshell, he explains, “We provide services for co m p a n i e s , a p a r t m e nt complexes, factories, local residents, and more. “Our crew offers property m a i n t e n a n ce — s u ch a s snow removal, fall cleanup and lawn care —boat winterization and storage, moving services, and car detailing.” Over the past seven years, Rupp Enterprises has certainly grown. “I started out doing a
few odd jobs here and there with one other person,” Matt says, “and now, we have twelve total employees. We started out with one little tiny pickup truck, and now we’ve got six!”
The collection of pickup trucks and staff comes in handy throughout the year as Rupp Enterprises shifts their focus for each season. In a business so heavily dependent upon the weather, Matt says that he and his crew are in “constant transition.” He adds, “We start at the beginning of the year and do snow removal with the trucks. Then, come spring, we get a lot of boats ready; we put in boat docks, boat lifts, and deliver the boats we’ve stored here.

“Then, we kind of start working in yards into the spring clean-up throughout the summer. Once we get back into fall, we start with the fall clean-up and boat winterization. “The variety of services fills all of the gaps that way. The boats take care of spring and fall, and winter is covered with snowplowing and other yardwork.” To add to the diversity of Rupp Enterprises, Matt also serves as the general manager of CMA Truck and Auto Sales, making the most out of his two business ventures. “Rupp Enterprises and CMA kind of work together,” he says. “Rupp Enterprises does all of the detailing and any other transportation for the vehicles bought and sold at CMA.” One unique trait of the “CMA experience” is that each customer’s need is individually addressed. As the manager of CMA, Matt works to provide customers with a vehicle tailored to their needs. “We buy cars from all over. In many cases, someone comes to us and says, ‘I want a vehicle in this price range, this type, et cetera,’ and we work to locate a vehicle for them. “For that reason, many of the vehicles come through our detail shop at Rupp Enterprises and then go straight to the customer. They never sit out on the lot, but that’s how we like it!”

Matt continues, “It keeps cash flow a lot better, and the customer gets exactly what they’re looking for, rather than settling for what is available.” While the diversity work never fails to keep things interesting, each season presents its own challenges. “Sometimes, it feels like we shut down one business and start another, but there’s a lot of bleed over, so sometimes at the changeover of seasons, we’re working a lot more hours trying to get things done. The transition between seasons is probably the most difficult thing we deal with.” Regardless of the seasonal changes, Matt expresses a great appreciation for his work. “I like the flexibility, and I enjoy that I can switch back and forth between everything. It’s a bit of a juggling act, but that’s the challenge of it, and that’s what makes it fun! “Most of the things we do are things I have always enjoyed. I enjoy boats and cars and the outside work. I used to enjoy snow, but after the last couple years of not sleeping all winter…” he chuckles, shaking his head before continuing, “but it’s a service, and I like seeing customers happy when we’re finished.” Whether you are looking for lawn care or snow removal assistance, a new vehicle, a place to winterize and store your boat until summer, or more, Rupp Enterprises offers something for you! Andy’s Car Wash:
Perfecting the Exterior Cleaning Article by Beth Steury
F
or Neil Schroder, owner of Andy’s Car Wash in Decatur, Indiana, producing a “good quality wash” is “what it’s all about.” He purchased the Decatur car wash in 2008. “It’s kind of a second career,” Neil explains. The businessman retired from Kirby after 31 years as a distributor, and now works in real estate.
employees. They’re good, solid people. I’m really encouraged about that.” While Neil calls the business “challenging,” he adds, “We had a fantastic 2015. It was our best year, and we’re encouraged that 2016 will be more of the same.”
Neil leaves the day-to-day operations to his manager, Jules Solomon. “He’s great,” says Neil. “He really knows his stuff.
Neil attributes their success to several factors. “We now have a $2 off coupon on the back of Kroger receipts, as well as coupons in the Wabash Valley Living magazine. We also held six charity events in 2015.”
“We’ve learned a lot about the car wash business together, me and Jules. I like our

Wash last year include Honor Flight of Northeast Indiana, St. Mark’s United Methodist Church and Love, Inc., as well as breast cancer research. “Those events helped us retain customers during a time when it’s typically a little slower,” says Neil. But, he feels the greatest impact came from a change in the wash process at Andy’s. “We are now handwashing cars, before they go through the tunnel,” he explains. “I think the quality of what’s coming out, in the end, has really been the key to our success.” Neil continues , “ We determined if we were going to get the backs of trucks, vans and SUVs e a n e dYOU p r o pDON’T e r l y, w e HAVE TO COOKclLIKE were going to have to do something dif ferent. It was either have the guys do some hand-washing or purchase additional, expensive equipment.” They opted for a focus on handwashing, which has paid off.
CLEAN
The new procedure includes several steps. “We pre-soak the vehicles with the wands, using a solution to get the dirt and grime
off. The guys blast it with the power washer, and then, they come through with the handwashing brushes.” After all of that, the vehicle is sent through the automated system. In mid-2015, Andy’s Car Wash also began using a new clear coat protectant in two of

its wash options. “Our carnauba wax is fantastic,” says Neil.
MOVING
OR DECLUTTERING?
Jules explains, “It’s a slow build wax that’s built into the soaps. The more often you wash your vehicle, the better it builds. I start noticing a difference in five to six washes. “It’s easier to clean regular customers’ cars because the wax has built up, and the dirt comes off easier. The cars also stay clean longer. “Washing your car once every six months is not what you want to do. Wash it two to three times a month, and put some quality wax on it. “You’ll get a longer life out of your paint and out of your vehicle, and when you go to sell or trade it in, it will be worth more.” The carnauba wax does a good job of beading the rain, as well. There are three automatic wash options to choose from at Andy’s Car Wash. The “express” wash includes handwashing on the back of the vehicle before it goes through the tunnel, where it’s washed with a single soap. It’s basically a “spray and go” option for $8. The “premium” wash includes handwashing on the back, front and sides, as well as an underbody wash in the tunnel for $10. The “platinum” level extends the hand-washing to include the wheels, and the use of three different soaps during the automatic wash. A punch card is available for platinum washes, offering a free wash after ten washes. The $12 cost of the platinum wash can also be further reduced with the use of coupons, making it a great value. Winter is the busiest time at Andy’s Car Wash, as people are anxious to wash the salt and grime of winter off their vehicles. Neil debunks the theory that it’s not safe to wash a vehicle if the temperature is below freezing.

“That’s a big misconception that people have,” he says. “We use hot water, so you’re not going to freeze your car by washing it. “In fact, our drying agent works better at a lower temperature, and the heated tunnel dries the car quickly as it goes through.” Even temperatures of five to ten below zero do not interfere with the car wash’s operations.
