She has participated in a variety of activities in her chapter, some of which include food drives and national and state conventions. She has made it to the national level in dairy Courtesy of Project 54:5 Photography judging and forestry identification contests. Emily was awarded Outstanding Junior last year and Top Chapter Dairy Food Individual for two consecutive years. Emily is also an active 4-H member, as she is President of the Adams County 4-H Junior Leaders and Adams County 4-H Ambassador. For the past four years, she has been a member representative on both the 4-H Council, as well as the Purdue Extension Board. She is in her tenth year as a participant in the foods project and has also been involved in a variety of other activities through 4-H. Emily’s family tops her list of motivators. “They don’t hold me back, and they let me follow my dreams,” she explains. Other sources of inspiration include her 4-H extension educator and other 4-H club leaders, as well as her FFA advisor and his family. “They have shown me that I can be a great leader, speaker, and overall person. A Note from

SOUTH ADAMS SCHOOLS'

WELLNESS ADVISORY COUCIL: Many of you are well aware of the health issues that surround our society today. Nationwide, roughly two out of three U.S. adults are overweight (69 percent) and one out of three is obese (36 percent). Even more alarming, the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents is on the rise, and youth are becoming overweight and obese at earlier ages. One out of six children and adolescents ages 2 to 19 are obese and one out of three are overweight. Early obesity not only increases the likelihood of adult obesity, it also increases the risk of heart disease in adulthood, as well as the prevalence of weight-related risk factors for cardiovascular disease such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high blood sugar. (1) To combat these issues, federal, state, and local governments are frantically attempting to develop ideas and policies that will reverse the trends. Here at South Adams Schools, we feel we have a responsibility to combat these issues on a local level. Studies have shown students who regularly participate in physical activity and participate in a healthy diet are more effective learners and are more likely to succeed in school and other learning environments. Thus, we have decided to take the proactive approach, teaming up with various certified school staff, administrators, health professionals, teachers, parents, students and our food service director to create a Wellness Advisory Council (WAC) in hopes to battle these problems on a local level. While there are many different areas that need to be considered, after much discussion and thought, the WAC has not only revised the schools wellness policy, but have also identified 5 target areas we feel currently needs to be addressed at South Adams. These areas are: Physical Activity Education of Wellness Policy for Parents Education of Wellness Policy for Staff Education of Wellness Policy for students Healthy Snacks It is our hope that the South Adams community embraces this initiative. If there are any questions, concerns, or suggestions, feel free to contact us. Those involved in this council are: Ashley Buckingham, Aimee Buckland, Jeff Lehman, Jeff Rich, Jeannine Wurster, Julie Reef, Rachel Rosswurm, Pauline Borders, Deb Hosier, Cindy Minnich, Scott Litwiller, Kenny Amstutz, Rebecca Dailey, Carol Hoffman, Katie Redwine, Cheryl Caffee, Matt Loshe, and Marie Nussbaum. 1. JAY COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL Congratulations, Class of 2014! by Holly Wuebker

Caitlin Mark Caitlin Mark, a senior at Jay County High School, is wellknown for her academic honors and awards, such as: honor roll, National Honor Society, Academic All-State Honorable Mention, and more. Her all-time favorite hobby and extra-curricular activity is swimming. Since the age of seven, Caitlin has devoted a great deal of her time to swimming. The hard work has paid off, with the many records she has broken, as well as qualifications in 2011 and 2013 for the IHSAA state meets. Caitlin has also volunteered with the summer swim team for the past four years and appreciated the experience because “she loved working with the children.”

Courtesy of RD Hunt Photography

What Catitlin has enjoyed most about the past four years of high school are the “friendships and memories.” She was able to travel to New York City, Philadelphia, Virginia Beach, Gatlinburg and Germany. “These are experiences that I will remember and cherish for the rest of my life,” she says. Caitlin attributes much of her success to her supportive parents. “While they encourage us to be fair, kind, and always do the best we can, they make sure to do the same.” Her future plans include attending Indiana University and majoring in exercise science. Caitlin anticipates pursuing a doctorate of physical therapy, and her goal is “to find a career that will be satisfying and enable me to help others.” «

At church, Shawna is a youth leader in the Rock Student Ministries and part of the worship band. She has also babysat for church members and has assisted with a variety of fundraising activities. As a volunteer in the community, Shawna has organized Christmas caroling at CrownPointe Communities, helped with the Angel Tree Foundation, and led a National Honor Society trip to Kokomo, Indiana, to assist with tornado clean-up and relief. Shawna enjoys a variety of hobbies, including: “spending time with family and friends, learning about Jesus, singing, helping others, dancing, playing tennis, painting, reading, and playing with her pet dogs and cats.” She has been inspired by her parents, who are “hard-working, generous, and loving.” Following graduation, Shawna plans to attend Huntington University and is interested in both missions work and youth ministry. In the future, she hopes to “start an organization in New York City to help underprivileged youths.” WVL

VAN WERT HIGH SCHOOL Congratulations, Class of 2014! by Amy M. Orr

Amanda Clay Van Wert High School senior Amanda Clay seeks experiences that stretch and challenge her. “High school, for me,” she says, “has always been about pushing myself, so I have appreciated the challenge of taking AP (advanced placement) classes. “I have also enjoyed participating in sports and competing with other athletes. I’ve made many friends and met a lot of people through my academics and sports, which has pushed me to do my best in everything.” According to Amanda, there are two men she credits with building this trait of self-motivation. “My dad has been someone who inspires me because he always presses me to do my best and to never let people tear me down.

“Denny Hammons has also greatly inspired me since I played on his basketball team. Now that I coach with him, he continues to support me but also encourages me to help others and to give back in bigger ways.” In the future, Amanda plans to do just that. She explains, “I hope to help people through medical research.” After attending college and earning a chemistry or pharmacy degree, Amanda expects to enter the field of pharmaceutical science. “I want to do research that may one day cure different medical issues.” Amanda says she hopes “never to be satisfied with the ordinary.” Instead, her goal is to “push for the extraordinary.” During high school, Amanda participated in cross country and track, competing at the state level on three occasions. She’s also been a member of Beta Club, Service Pack Club, National Honor Society, Spanish Club and Cougar Mentoring. Amanda’s honors include: Junior Rotarian, varsity letter, Scholar Athlete, WBL All-Academic Team, Academic All-Ohio Team, Good Attitude Award, and Gold Renaissance Card. «

FT RECOVERY HIGH SCHOOL Congratulations, Class of 2014! by Holly Wuebker

Jesse Buckley A senior at Fort Recovery High School, Jesse Buckley has made the most of his educational experiences over the past four years. He’s “enjoyed being able to be part of something bigger than” himself and has learned quite a bit. Much of Jesse’s time at school has been spent focusing on technology and computers, two of his favorite interests. Jesse says he’s been inspired by Gabe Nowell, a Microsoft employee who, after thirteen years, decided to pursue “his own dreams of providing digital entertainment.” Nowell is “the co-founder and managing director of Valve Corporation,” a video game development and digital distribution company.

Photo Provided

A volunteer tutor and a participant in Scholastic Bowl, Math Science Club and National Honor Society, Jesse still found time to take part in religion classes and CYO basketball. He was also the recipient of an academic letter, as well as the Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award. Following graduation, Jesse intends to pursue a degree at the Ohio State University in computer science and engineering. Like Gabe Nowell, Jesse plans to pursue his dreams in the field of computer technology. «

Dere k Sutter Running, watching sports, music, canoeing, 4-wheeler riding, hiking and bike are just a few of the activities that senior Derek Sutter enjoys in his free time. What has he enjoyed most about high school? “The awesome atmosphere at the Fort Site Field House at basketball games...the student body decked out for each game,” Derek says. “The faculty, who care about students and their futures – everyone is always caring and willing to help.” According to Derek, there was one faculty member in particular who inspired him. Mrs. Robyn Armstrong, he says, demonstrated that with “hard work and giving 110-percent, there is no limit to what you can achieve.” Derek’s family has also been a strong motivator. They’ve also been his “biggest cheering section.” A few of the honors Derek has received during his high school career include: academic letter, National Honor Society membership, Cross Country awards, Honors awards, and Top Spanish Student. He has participated in MathScience Club, FBLA, TEAMS Competition, Spanish Club, and extra-curricular sports. As a volunteer mass server, vacation Bible school instructor, and CYO basketball participant, he also values faith and church involvement. Upon graduating, Derek intends to pursue a degree in bioengineering at the University of Toledo. He hopes to “have the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives.” WVL

After graduation, Rachel will attend the University of Saint Francis to major in nursing, hoping eventually to specialize in pediatrics. Her passion for children stems from her experiences growing up in a large family. Rachel volunteers in her church nursery and as a child supervisor for Mom’s Life. Very involved in the community, she also contributes her time as an intern at A Friend’s House Ministries. Her other volunteer work includes: Alive and Well, Christian Care Retirement Community, the Winter Wonderland event with the Parks Department, the Daddy Daughter Dance, and community-wide cleanups. A member of her church’s worship team, Rachel loves singing, piano, and guitar, and has taken voice lessons since age 11. In her spare time, she enjoys playing football with her brothers, reading, and hanging out with her family. Always wonderful role models for her to look up to, Rachel’s parents have been her biggest inspirations. “Both Mom and Dad always believe in me and encourage or push me to be the best that I can be. Having their support is great and gives me the confidence to pursue my dreams.” «

Joshua Streveler Josh Streveler is a very involved young man with high achievements – both in academics and sports. He has been the recipient of many awards and honors, including several academic and leadership awards in multiple subjects. In the community, Josh was the Wells County Outstanding Scholar for 2011 and 2014, the Hoosier Boys’ State Representative, and the Robert Hanie Awards Junior Boy for Outstanding Academics. Josh’s future plans include a bachelor’s degree in chemistry before moving on to medical school to concentrate on orthopedics. After becoming a doctor, he hopes to take his skills to the mission field. He says, “My purpose in life is to serve others, and becoming a doctor would allow me to serve in a physical manner while sharing spiritually.” Already helping others, Josh has gone on several mission trips with Life Community Church, where he has also been a youth leader. He has also volunteered at Forgotten Children Worldwide and the Wells Community Public Library. At school, Josh served as a Student Council class representative and president. Playing sports was a highlight of his high school experience, and the memories from his competitions in varsity cross country, junior varsity basketball, varsity football, and varsity track will stay with him for the rest of his life. If he needs inspiration, Josh turns to his dad, who works extremely hard and possesses many qualities Josh strives to attain. When he isn’t in school, volunteering, or interning at Indiana Physical Therapy, Josh enjoys religious studies, reading, and playing board games. WVL

While serving as Grant Committee Chairman, Brent co-wrote a grant to receive funds for installing free-standing antibacterial dispensers at the county fairgrounds. He also supervised the distribution of these stands throughout the park. A true servant leader, Brent has worked in several other 4-H capacities, from assisting with maintenance to leading committees and meetings. Volunteering has also been an important aspect of his life, and he has helped with several fundraisers and service projects for his sports teams. Lincoln RidgeFarms FRESH FARM PRODUCE SOY-WAX CANDLES & FAMILY FUN Article by Amy M. Orr

O

nce known for its prize-winning registered Guernsey dairy cattle, Lincoln Ridge Farms was founded along the historic Lincoln Highway northeast of Convoy, Ohio, in 1919. At that time, Lincoln Ridge was one of the few farms in the area raising field tomatoes – because its soil was ideal for tomato production. Four generations later, Lincoln Ridge Farms is now owned and operated by

Jeff and Cathy Thomas, along with their grown children, Arrin, Alison, and Alec. "We are a busy farm family!" says Cathy. The farming operation includes 25 acres of land, and the Thomas family raises a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. "We grow everything from A to Z," Cathy remarks, "but we specialize in sweet corn, melons, tomatoes, blackberries, blueberries, grapes, asparagus, and u-pick strawberries."

In the fall, Lincoln Ridge Farm hosts an annual Fall Mums and Pumpkin Festival. Cathy says, "This is our twenty-eighth year." Each weekend from late September through October, the farm is open for "great family fun." Visitors can enjoy wagon rides to and from the pumpkin patch. Lincoln Ridge also offers a newly-expanded corn maze, a "giant jumping pillow," pig races, straw mountain with zip line, festival food, and much more. According to Cathy, their farm festival is the "largest in the tri-state area." The Thomases also operate a seasonal gift shop on the farm. Cathy recalls, "It was hard to find a quality candle to sell. As a child, I made candles with my mother for gifts at Christmas time. It was something I always enjoyed doing." In 1999, the Thomases launched Lincoln Candle Company. "We use natural fragrance oils and our own soy-wax blend. Our candles are full of fragrance and long-lasting." Cathy says she and Jeff are hopeful that their grandchildren will carry on the family farming tradition. "Our grandchildren are becoming of age to work on the farm and at the markets – and especially at our fall festival. "They are learning what it is to put in a hard day's work. We take great pride in our heritage and look forward to being a century farm in 2019." Lincoln Ridge Farms also offers space for rent for outdoor weddings, receptions, family reunions, meetings, and parties.
