School Notes Parents Can Help Children Succeed on ISTEP
We are just a few weeks away from ISTEP testing. ISTEP tests will be given to all public school students in grades 3 - 8 sometime between March 4th and 13th. This portion of the ISTEP tests is called the “Applied Skills” section, and it measures the students’ thinking. Rather than asking multiplechoice questions, the questions are open-ended. Students show their work, along with their answers. It is important that students show their work because partial credit can be earned even if the final answer is incorrect. Parents can boost their child’s performance on ISTEP. One of the most crucial ways to help students succeed on standardized tests is helping children develop a daily habit of reading. A child who can read well is more likely to succeed in school and do well on ISTEP tests. Furthermore, reading achievement is very dependent on what happens at home. At school, teachers provide the opportunity to learn reading skills, but more time than is available during the school day is needed to practice those skills. Depending on the grade level, students should spend 20-60 minutes a day, at least five days a week, reading at home. Adequate reading practice at home will build a student’s comprehension, reading rate, and vocabulary.
Comprehension is more than just being able to recognize and pronounce words. It is about making sense of what the words say. ISTEP often measures comprehension by asking students to find the main idea. Reading rate is the speed at which a child reads. Since ISTEP tests are timed, it is important for students to have a good reading rate. Just remember, it does not help your child to read faster if your child does not have good comprehension. Vocabulary influences both comprehension and reading rate. The more words a student knows, the faster the student will be able to read and the better the student will be able to understand what he is reading. Research shows that students who read every day build their vocabulary, increase their reading rate, and improve their comprehension. However, it takes time and consistent effort. Parents, who insure that their children are reading at home, do help to increase their children’s reading achievement. We all want our children to do well on ISTEP, and ISTEP is designed to measure what students have learned during this school year. By paying attention to a child’s reading habits, parents can help their children learn and perform well on ISTEP.

The Romance of Mike “Happy the Hobo” and Erin Fry

decade after leaving one of his first loves – performing daily as “Happy the Hobo” on his own television show for kids, Happy’s Place – Mike Fry met the love of his life. He first met Erin on a cruise ship.
Erin Jump, a college student living in Pensacola, Florida, had boarded the cruise ship with three girlfriends. On the first night of the cruise, the friends dared Erin to approach a man on the ship. She chose Mike and boldly flirted with him.
At the time, he’d been owner of Fancy Fortune Cookies, an Indianapolis-based company producing the colorful, flavored fortune cookies invented by Mike, for nearly 12 years. Mike and a close friend had booked the cruise to attend a marketing seminar held on-board.
And, she says, the two were inseparable for the rest of the week-long cruise. “The first things I noticed were his eyes and his smile. We talked about deep things – not surface things. Between us was instant trust. He felt safe.

“We both loved to laugh – loudly. We laughed so hard together. Laughter is so important. There was no hanky-panky going on, though there might have been a little kissing involved. “At the end of the week, we said ‘goodbye,’ and went our separate ways.” For three-and-a-half years, Mike and Erin communicated occasionally via email. Their messages were little more than, “How’s it going?” The pair’s paths crossed again at a marketing seminar in Orlando, Florida. “We hit it off instantly,” says Erin. “And, even though I was finishing up school, we made time for each other and managed to do the long-distance thing. “We both knew after that first weekend of randomly reconnecting that we were meant to be. But, that doesn’t mean it was all smooth sailing.” Mike professed his love to Erin three months later. “We spent as much time together as is possible, when you live 700 miles away from each other,” laughs Erin. “Our dates were anything but traditional – they were whole weekends together. “Mike always picked great restaurants. We loved eating great food. And, Mike was an

absolute gentleman. He always held the door open for me…always treated me like the most precious thing in the world. “It always felt like there was this little bubble around us. The bubble continued, and we lived in our own little world.” Mike and Erin grew close, despite the distance. “We started with email and just wrote to each other – most of the time, daily. I’m so lucky to have a huge number of notes, emails, cards, and hand-written letters that showed me he was thinking of me and loved me.” When Erin completed her degree, she relocated to Indianapolis so she could be near Mike. Mike proposed nearly two years later – on a cruise ship. “We took a bottle of wine out on deck in an ice bucket,” Erin recalls. “He put the corkscrew in the bottom of the ice bucket, so I had to dig under the ice to pull it out. “As I was digging through the ice for this corkscrew, I came across a plastic bag and pulled it out, wondering what the heck it was doing in there. I turned around to show Mike, and he was on one knee, out in the middle of the ocean, under the stars. “He told me to reach into the bag and asked me to marry him. Of course, I said ‘Yes!’”

Five months later, Mike and Erin were married while on a business trip in Thailand. They shared the day with about two dozen close friends. “It couldn’t have been more memorable or magical. We wrote our own vows. It was 100% stress-free, which is completely in line with what we both believed. “A wedding isn’t about the dress, gifts, cake or party…it’s about you and your life partner. “Once we returned to the states, we made it government-official by going to the courthouse in Indianapolis. We danced in the parking lot afterward…and by danced, I mean this stupid, choreographed dance we put together. Those are the best memories.” Although Erin had studied premed in college, she became Mike’s business partner at Fancy Fortune Cookies. “Believe it or not,” she says, “it was great. Ideas always flowed and were born easily between us.

“It never felt like work.” Mike and Erin welcomed a baby girl after two-and-a-half years of marriage. “We wanted to wait until about five years after we were married. “Mike wanted to have me to himself, and he also knew that having a baby would limit my time – he wanted me to be able to travel and live before we shifted our focus to teaching a child. “I’m so glad we had Ella – our unexpected blessing. “He literally became a kid again, trying to play with her and make her laugh at her level and age. It was awesome…and, sometimes, frustrating to have two kids in the house!” Mike and Erin continued growing closer to one another throughout their marriage. Erin says, “Hopefully, most people are growing and learning and working to be better everyday of their lives. “We grew as individuals, and that strengthened our relationship as a couple. “We accepted and loved one another, but at the same time, we knew we could always be better and improve. having a baby doesn’t change anything…they are not telling the truth. It changes everything!” According to Erin, Mike was an “amazing” father, even before Ella’s birth. “From the night he found out I was pregnant till she was about three years old, he sang to her everyday. He was a bad singer, but I loved it.

the same team and had each other’s best interest in mind. “As long as you know that, you can disagree without destroying your relationship through arguments.” The love Mike and Erin shared endured the difficult times, as well. In August 2011, Mike’s mother passed away. On the same day, still a few months shy of their sixth wedding anniversary, Mike was diagnosed with lymphoma. One month later, Erin was sick with a stomach bug, and Mike fell ill, as well. But, when Mike began vomiting blood, Erin took him to the emergency room.

“You know something is serious when lymphoma becomes a nonissue,” says Erin. “That’s when we found out Mike had a very rare autoimmune disease. “Usually, it’s subtle and goes on for 20 years or more before you see any signs. That first time, he had lost a lot of blood and had to be transfused. “It shook our world, and he never went back to work. The doctors urged Mike to get on a transplant list. He didn’t want that. “So, we ended up in the hospital four more times over the next fourteen months. Each time, it taxed his system more. He was weaker after each episode. “It was hard to watch him fade and know that I was helpless. I would have gladly taken his place, but I know he never would have let me, even if it were possible. “Eventually, he didn’t wake up. He didn’t get better. His kidneys shut down. They had to keep him sedated. It was agony everyday for ten days.

“I am lucky. I am honored to have known him, loved him, and to have had his love in return. I got to live life with my best friend – my lover – my soulmate. Who would want to change that?” Freely confessing she is no expert in marriage, Erin offers, “The only thing I would say is that time is short, so focus on the things that actually matter. Spend time with each other. “And, if you love each other, always remember you are on the same team. “Mike and I created great memories together – that is what I am most thankful for. That’s all I have left.
The pain and loss is still very fresh for Erin. Still, she says, “I have no regrets. I would do all of this over again, even knowing what I know now…knowing how hard the past year was, and how painful everyday is for me right now.

et’s face it. When a girl starts thinking about her wedding day, it’s a big deal!
occasions of her life—since she’ll be in the spotlight on that big day, she has the right to be a LITTLE fussy!
Grooms usually don’t understand it. In fact, most don’t have a clue. But, the reality is, a bride-to-be has been dreaming of her wedding day since she first started watching Disney princess movies as a little girl.
When you start planning your wedding day, there’s no reason you shouldn’t try to reproduce your favorite wedding daydreams. Why not do it YOUR way??
Sure, there are brides who get a little carried away, and the term “bridezilla” definitely seems to fit a few ladies out there. But, a girl’s wedding day is one of the biggest
When it came to planning her wedding, Kyla Lengerich says she took a hands-on approach. She explains, “I’m a perfectionist, and I couldn’t picture someone else making the decisions for our special day!”
15
Kyla adds, “There were some things my husband Nate wanted a say in, but, overall, he left things up to me. It was so fun, and I loved every part of it!”
Flowers whisper what words cannot say
The first item on Kyla’s planning checklist? A wedding date. “This was so much harder than we ever expected. We knew we didn’t want a winter wedding, and with my job, there are certain weeks each month I can’t take off.”

In the end, Kyla says she chose a date based on the availability of two particular wedding vendors. This wasn’t any easy choice, by any means. In fact, it meant putting things off a bit further than expected. “Our original date was September 2011, but because we were so particular about our vendors, it pushed our date back nine months to June 2012. Since we weren’t in a big rush – I mean, we’ve already waited seven years – it all worked out in the end!” Kyla was determined, first of all, to book Amy’s Photography, of Berne. “I’ve known for awhile that I wanted Amy to do my wedding pictures, when the time came. She’s very professional, personable, and her work is amazing.” Kyla says booking her wedding date around Amy’s schedule was worth it. “We received so many compliments on our wedding photos.” The bride-to-be had also known for sometime where she wanted to hold her wedding reception. “My junior high school prom was at Romer’s Catering & Entertainment Center in Celina, Ohio, and I just loved that venue. “It’s a very classy reception hall – and, a place I’ve kept in the back of my mind for that one special day. When my husband saw it for the first time, he agreed it was definitely the right place for us. “They do their own catering and have different menus to choose from. We decided on a full dinner menu that included baked chicken, beef chuck roast, red potatoes, green beans, chicken and noodles, salad and a roll.” Jake Amstutz, also known as DJ Jake, provided music during the wedding reception. “He did a really great job of getting people on the dance floor,” says Kyla, “and he played a great selection of music.”

Once Kyla and Nate established their wedding date, booked their photographer and reception hall, Kyla began to focus on other wedding planning details. For wedding flowers, she chose Morningstar’s Dreams on Wings, located just north of Geneva. “My husband was not particular about the flowers – other than wanting them to be real flowers. “I’m a very visual person, and I need to see something before I can tell if I like it. I think I changed my mind about the flowers two or three times. “Finally, I searched online to find pictures of different flowers, and to get some ideas. I took Morningstar’s pictures of arrangements I liked, since I wasn’t very good at explaining them myself. “These ladies do amazing work, when it comes to flowers. They definitely delivered. In fact, when I saw the flowers for the first time, I broke down. I was just in awe at how well they turned out.” Kyla found her bridal gown at Wendy’s Bridal, a locally-owned store in Fort Wayne. She explains, “I’ve purchased prom dresses there and was very pleased with the services. “I wanted a dress that was strapless, a-line…one with lots of beading, and very sparkly! After trying on lots of gowns, I started to become discouraged and wondered if I’d really find my dress there. “In fact, I was about to leave the store, when the gal helping me said, ‘I have one more dress for you to try on. It just came in yesterday, so it hasn’t been pressed, yet, but I think it’s exactly what you want.’” Kyla fell in love with the gown immediately. She also purchased a veil and tiara at Wendy’s. After browsing at several other stores, Kyla found her bridesmaids’ dresses at Wendy’s, as well. “Anyone who knows me knows that I love pink. So, of course, the bridesmaids’ dresses were going to be pink.” The gown of choice matched Kyla’s personality perfectly – not only was it pink, but it also included a “fun, sparkly” embellishment.

When she looked for shoes to wear with her own gown, Kyla focused on comfort, first, and, suitable bling, second. “I’m not one that likes to wear high heels. While in Chicago with my family, I found a pair of hot pink, sparkly Sperry’s. I had to buy them! “They were definitely a hit and talked about a lot at the wedding.” Kyla asked her friend, Lydia Poulson, and Lydia’s roommate to do her hair and makeup for the wedding.
Kyla selected the men’s attire at Roger’s Formalwear in Fort Wayne. Wedding bands were purchased in Fort Wayne, as well, at Rogers and Hollands. “My grandma made our cake,” Kyla says. “She used to work in a cake and candy store, and she had done some of my cousins’ cakes, too. She did such a wonderful job, and it was great planning it all out with someone I love so much.”

“It wasn’t hard at all, but it was timeconsuming.” The pair used etching cream from a craft store and some contact paper to transfer letters onto the glasses. Invitations were also a do-it-yourself project for Kyla and Nate. “We printed everything at home. It was timeconsuming, again, since we had to cut them out, assemble them and attach the ribbon, but it was much cheaper – and, a great bonding time.” Instead of spending a fortune on favors for their guests, Kyla decided to create an elegant candy buffet for her guests at the reception. “We purchased inexpensive jars at various stores. Then, we bought candy in bulk at Sam’s Club.

“We received so many compliments on this. Everyone loved it.” Kyla chose her home church for the wedding location. “Our ceremony was simple,” she recalls. “We worked with two ladies from the church for the music. “They both had done multiple weddings before, so their ideas really helped with the timing and song choices. They also gave us suggestions about things they’d seen at other weddings.” Kyla liked one of these ideas so much, she added it to her ceremony at the last minute. “We gave a rose to the mothers after the lighting of the unity candle. The mothers absolutely loved it, and they were completely caught off-guard. “It was such a special moment.” Kyla’s cousin served as officiant for the ceremony. She designed programs for

the ceremony that were similar to her also hand-made wedding invitations. “We did have someone at the church videotape the ceremony,” Kyla adds. “I highly recommend this. It’s a great keepsake item and fun to watch. Each time we watch it, we find something new we didn’t catch the previous times.” Eight months after her wedding, Kyla really has just one regret. “If our budget had allowed it, we would have loved to have had a photo booth,” she says. “They are so fun – and, a great way to capture funny moments with your guests.”

Otherwise, Kyla says she and Nate were mostly “so happy and relieved” that the wedding went so smoothly after about 18 months of planning. “It was truly the best day ever.” To other brides-to-be, Kyla advises, “Try not to stress over the little things. Yes, something’s not going to go like you planned, but no one will know but you. “I strongly encourage brides to try and do as much as you can yourself. It’s so satisfying at the end of the day to see all your hard work become reality.”

wedding is a very special time in any person’s life. And when planning a wedding, the bride and groom like to visit shops that spend extra time catering to their specific needs. Sisters Bridal Boutique in Van Wert, Ohio, and Masterson’s in Bluffton, Indiana, are two such shops that specialize in excellent customer service. In fact, avoiding problems that plague chain stores – such as non-personalized service, being overcrowded, and commercialized gowns or tuxes – is what drives the owners of Sisters Bridal Boutique and Masterson’s.

“Other stores I’ve been to didn’t offer good customer service, and I wanted to offer a small store that gave one-on-one service,” Sisters Boutique owner Pam Brown explains. Dick Mayer, the owner of Masterson’s, echoes this sentiment as he describes how visiting a smaller business results in a more personalized touch. “We’re big enough to serve, but small enough to care.” Aside from wanting to give his customers better service, Mayer also got into the men’s attire business because of his passion for

offering quality clothing. He says, “My love of clothing inspired me to go further and own my own store.” Before owning Masterson’s, Mayer worked as a salesman at this same store, as well as another small establishment in Decatur. “I guess [owning a store] was just something that I always wanted to do. I worked for Masterson’s for nine years, and I also worked at Brooks Men’s Wear in Decatur for 10 years. “But the whole time I always knew that I wanted to own my own place,” he says. Mayer certainly inherited a wellestablished name within the Bluffton community. The store began as Masterson–Tyndall in 1927, and, when Tyndall died in 1958, the name was shortened to Masterson’s. With a rich history behind his shop, and lots of experience in men’s clothing, Mayer was able to make a smooth transition into ownership. Brown’s entry into business ownership was quite different than Mayer’s path. She didn’t have much experience in running a wedding attire store, and her first day was pretty unique. “We had our grand opening on June 30th, 2010, and I was expecting a party that day, because it was mostly friends and family there,” Brown says.

Now taking Wedding Portraits! “But the public was also invited, and we actually had customers. “My niece came to me and said she wanted a wedding dress, and we didn’t even have cash in the register on that day because I was just expecting a party. I thought to myself, ‘I guess we are a business now.’” With two-and-a-half years under her belt, Brown has already learned some valuable lessons. “It was baptism by fire in the beginning. I’ve learned to try and just listen to what the bride says – what they are looking for. “From there, I can go and buy new dresses that will do well. Trends are different in our area than in other areas. “I asked my out-of-college daughter and a current high school senior to look through the dress books. I noticed that the 24-year-old and senior liked different styles, so I need to put my opinion on the backburner, sometimes.

“The trends that I like aren’t necessarily what are going to sell in this specific area.” As for Dick Mayer, he’s also learned a lot in his time as a business owner. “I learn something new every day in owning a business. It’s a total change from just working for a store.

to open them. I Facebook about the dresses and put them on my website.” She adds, “I love helping moms find their dress. Usually, when moms come in, they have a frown, and you can tell what they’re here for. “They haven’t found anything yet, and they don’t want to wear something that makes them feel old. Moms are more fun because they haven’t been in the limelight for a long time, and it’s great to help them find a nice dress.” Brown has plenty of dresses to choose from for every woman in a wedding party. “We have 100 different wedding dress styles, which is different from some of the bigger stores,” she says. “Other places will have hundreds of dresses in different sizes, but with limited styles to choose from. A lot of them are just duplicates.” “I know a lot more about what goes on behind the scenes. There’s far more responsibility in having your own place, as well.” Of course, the added responsibility is easily offset by the rewards that come with owning a business. Brown explains, “When dresses come in, it feels like Christmas – it’s exciting

dresses, first communion dresses, prom dresses and other special-occasion attire. The dresses come in multiple sizes, inclucing plus size up to size 30. Custom orders should be placed six months in advance for a wedding dress, four months ahead for bridesmaids/ mother’s dresses, and one month in advance for a tuxedo rental. And, Brown advises to “be open-minded and try all of the styles on.” She adds, “You may be surprised at what you actually like. “It’s also a good idea to have a budget in mind. And, only bring a couple of people because too many brides bring their entire wedding party. They try on dresses everybody else wants them to try – and not what they like. “It’s hard when too many people are there because the bride is looking for approval from everybody.” Masterson’s offers full-time tailoring and custom tailoring, while specializing in suits, sports coats, slacks, cuff links, shoes, ties, wallets and tuxedo rentals. The tuxedos come exclusively from Jim’s Formal Wear, and wedding parties that order tuxedos should do so at least 1-3 weeks in advance. Now is the perfect time to shop at Masterson’s because they are currently offering lots of discounts. Mayer advises, “January and February are clearance months for winter merchandise. We’re getting ready for the spring and summer clothing that’ll be offered starting in March.” Brown will be setting up a booth for Sisters at a couple bridal shows this winter. She’ll be at Own the Aisle in Decatur on February 17th, 2013, and at Bridal Extravaganza 2013 on February 24th at the Grand Wayne Center in Fort Wayne. Shopping locally for wedding attire can be a positive experience. By shopping locally, you’re more likely to find great customer service at the smaller locallyowned stores – as well as locations that are closer to home. Dick Mayer and Pam Brown do their best to make sure customers leave satisfied. So, when you’re ready to choose your wedding attire, stop by Sisters Bridal Boutique and Masterson’s Clothing.

WILMEN’S COUNTRY STORE 421 East 100 South, Monroe Mon. - Sat. 9:00am to 5pm Joe M. Schwartz was born and raised on the 70-acre farm now occupied by Wilmen’s Country Store. In the late 70s, Joe began making furniture - his business was known as Swiss Valley Furniture. In 1981, Joe’s father Menno opened Wilmen’s Country Store. He built a small structure for the store and sold mostly herbs. He later added fabrics, and as the business grew, Menno added gift items, housewards, and more, and he added onto the building several times. Joe and his wife Leah bought Wilmen’s in December 2009. The couple added Joe’s line of furniture, including bedroom suites and dining tables. They also take orders for custom-made pieces.

Martin & Elizabeth Hilty began selling used furniture in 1999. At the time, Martin was working construction and farming. But, he and Elizabeth wanted to operate a business that would keep him close to home. In 2000, the couple added onto Hilty’s Furniture, and in 2003, they began selling new furniture, as well. Martin was able to quit his construction job in 2005. Hilty’s sells more new than used furniture now. In September 2008, they also added a line of poly-wood outdoor furniture. This has been popular, since it requires no upkeep. The Hilty’s store is operated by the family. They are thankful to customers for making the business successful.

EDDING INVITATIONS

nce the church and reception locations have been chosen, and the guest list has been determined, the bride’s focus typically turns to the invitations that will be sent. What style? What color? How should they be worded? At Complete Printing Service, Charlie Brune and his staff understand that the expertise they bring to this specific part of the process can be very helpful to the bride. “We’ve been in the wedding invitation and accessories business for over 43 years.
“We help people who are planning their very special day make sure their invitation contains all of the information their guests need, as well as eliminate the possibility of mistakes or errors. We truly are the experts when it comes to proper wording and format.” Invitations, RSVP cards, napkins, thank-you cards, and wedding programs are available at Complete Printing Service (CPS). “The majority of our customers are surprised that this level of service is available to them right here in Decatur!

“We have a large group of sample books, provided by the vendors with whom we partner. And, we are one of the few facilities that will allow these sample books to go home with you.” While Internet shopping for this type of product has become much more popular over the past few years, actually seeing and touching the invitations is still important to most people. While shopping for invitations may be a low-cost alternative, there are pitfalls and potential disasters lurking. “It is not unusual for us to field a call from a distraught young lady who is trying to find out how to fix a

mistake on an Internet-purchased invitation,” says Brune. “Sometimes, it is a misspelling. Other times, it is incomplete information – and, we have even seen the wrong color of envelopes sent.” Most don’t fully understand that once they hit the button, no one on the other end of the fiber optic cable is going to double check spelling or incomplete information. And, fixing a mistake will be costly. At CPS, three different individuals view every invitation order before it is submitted for the printing process. “We want the bride-

to-be to understand the options available to her, and for her to rely on us to insure her invitation will be not only worded properly, but that it will contain the information guests will need. “Our customers appreciate the professional and personalized service they receive from us here at CPS.” Charlie also points out that they offer a number of features and benefits, allowing them to be competitive with the online products. “We understand that pricing is a major factor for those who shop online. We don’t charge for extra lines for any wedding product. “And, there is no charge for shipping if your order is over $100. We also have developed a discount chart, based upon the dollar volume of your bridal order.” And, while most electronic vendors take a number of weeks for delivery, invitations ordered from CPS typically are available for their bridal customers within three to seven days! Over the years the wedding invitation business has almost

become a cottage industry. Bridal gown shops, floral boutiques and tuxedo rental shops have all seen the potential for additional profit. What they are unable to offer you is a professional approach to planning and finalizing the one aspect of your wedding that is going to touch literally every one of your guests – the beautifully-designed piece of parchment that will invite them to share in your special day.

on and Karleen Sprunger are the owners of Richard’s Jewelry in Berne. With 38 years of experience at Richard’s, the couple constructs and repairs beautiful pieces of jewelry masterfully and joyfully.
Ron took jewelry-making classes and attended watch-making school. When the couple moved back to Berne, where Ron grew up, they began working at Richard’s and eventually became the owners of the jewelry store.
Ron was first introduced to the art of making jewelry when the couple lived in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1973. They met a man there who made custom jewelry, which sparked Ron’s interest in making and repairing jewelry.
Ron spends most of his time making the jewelry, while Karleen and the other girls spend the majority of their time working with customers. Ron says that he loves the creative, hands-on aspect of jewelry-

making. He specializes in making and repairing watches. Ron and Karleen understand that a wedding is a very important and special moment in life, and they offer their expertise to those looking for special-occasion pieces. As “something special to commemorate” the occasion, the bride can wear a pendant with two diamonds – symbolizing the couple
– or, the groom could wear a watch with a personal inscription, such as their wedding date. Jewelry is often given as a gift to the bridesmaids, the parents of the couple, the bride, or groom. Charm bracelets, pearls, and special engravings are just a few ways to celebrate the big day. Pearls are a classic choice for the bride and her bridesmaids to wear.

Buying the groom a watch customized with the anniversary date, the couple’s initials, or special message becomes a practical piece that he’ll use and cherish forever as a beautiful reminder of his wedding day. He will be touched by the thought and what the watch represents. When choosing jewelry, there are many aspects to consider – contemporary or traditional style, the shape, size, and type of stone you want, and how certain features of jewelry affect the message that is sent.
Certain stones can symbolize different things, such as the journey or unity of the couple, and customized engravings can be added to give the personal touch. Ron and Karleen Sprunger recognize the value, importance, and impact that jewelry adds to the celebration of marriage. They’re able to translate a personal message into a special piece of jewelry, representing love and marriage through beautiful pieces.

he Lighted Acres catering company was established in Ossian in 1961. In the early 90’s, it was renamed The Lighted Gardens. Not long after the name change, Jerry Springer took over the business and has been offering catering services and tasty cakes to the surrounding area ever since. Springer came to Ossian from Fort Wayne because he was looking for more floor space. He said, “I had a catering business in Fort Wayne, originally. I needed a larger
space and this place came up for sale.” He’s now able to accommodate much larger wedding receptions and events after purchasing The Lighted Gardens. Since moving from Fort Wayne, Springer has noticed one very large difference. “The biggest difference is the customer’s budget – it’s a little smaller here (Ossian),” Springer said. Despite dealing with smaller budgets, the 36-year catering veteran has found success with his northern Wells County business.

The Lighted Gardens goes beyond just offering wedding cakes and food; this establishment also features a full-service bar, banquet facility and delivery to many locations. But, even with all of these services, what excites Lighted Gardens customers most is the wedding cakes. Springer said that chocolate is typically the most requested cake flavor; however, he is partial to the red raspberry cake.
In all, customers may choose from 15 cake flavors. Because the flavor of your cake isn’t the only thing that matters, The Lighted Gardens also offers three different types of frosting: butter cream, whipped cream and rolled fondant. Wedding cakes can be customized to suit a couple’s theme, color, venue or the bride’s dress. When it comes to the design process, couples are encouraged to bring pictures of what they like. After all, it is nice for the

He recommends, “Order it 4-6 weeks prior to the wedding. “As for rush orders, it depends on our schedule.” The same advice goes for booking a banquet hall, Jerry adds. “In the summer months, if you want a weekend, I would book a year in advance.”
When designing cakes, Springer doesn’t look first to Martha Stewart designs. Instead, he admires Duff Goldman, the host of a Food Channel reality show, Ace of Cakes, which aired for 10 seasons. “I like Duff Goldman. Not that I can duplicate what he did…but he had an interesting reality show where he made cakes, and I watched it a lot.” It’s worth mentioning that Springer’s job involves more than trying to design fancy cakes like Goldman. He also has to run the business side of things and worry about handling all of the orders he gets on a daily basis. Springer describes the ordering process. “Well it’s all important, I would say…getting the information
Many banquet halls are quite busy throughout the year. The Lighted Gardens is certainly no different in this regard, as they are even busy in the winter. The Lighted Gardens offers mouth-watering menus for up to 450 guests and can also provide décor options, along with their wedding cakes and specialty desserts. The staff at the Lighted Gardens will take good care of you on your big day, whether it is your wedding, anniversary or company outing. Just remember to “book early and come often,” as Springer says.

EDDING FLOWERS
Your Way
by Mark Okoniewski
A
s a bride begins to compile the seemingly endless list of tasks, items and services to be considered as she plans her wedding day, flowers invariably are at or near the top of that list. The florist whom the bride will choose to provide her bouquets, boutonnieres and arrangements for the church and reception is a very important decision that must be made. The Flower Nook, in downtown Portland, knows the importance of that decision and understands how their unique blend of talents, products and services best meets the needs of their bridal customers.

Photos provided.
The Flower Nook has been conducting business since 1976, but their building on Main Street has been housing a florist shop since it was built in the early 1940s. Being able to carry on a decades’ long tradition was important to the new owner, Kyle Teeter. Kyle recently graduated from college, completing a fine arts degree with an emphasis on graphic design, and he purchased the Flower Nook in Sept of 2011. “My abilities as a graphics artist combine very nicely with the experience our employees bring to this floral business. We are able to offer a number of unique and customized products to our customers.”
Kyle continues, “The amazing amount of experience we have on our staff! Janis Fritze has been working at this building for over 22 years, and Marlene Runyon continues on a part-time basis with her 34 years of experience.
We have all seen how the Internet and electronic devices have impacted our lives. Janis Fritze says a change that she has noticed over the past few years is the number of brides-to-be that bring in photos on their phone or tablet computers.
“Lisa Kahn has been employed for over 18 years, and the gentleman from whom I purchased the business, John Janak, still stops in occasionally to lend a hand.
“It used to be, they would bring a magazine or a flyer from a bridal show. Today, we look at someone’s phone, or they email us a picture.”

“Their original photo may have contained flowers that are extremely expensive and costprohibitive. We can show them which selections will give them the same or similar look but be much more affordable.” Kyle’s graphic artist abilities also allow the Flower Nook to incorporate printed materials right into their arrangements and decorations. “One of the most popular items which we can provide for use at the reception is a collage of photographs.” There will soon be a new product offering at the Flower Nook. “We are excited to announce that starting the first of February, we will be offering tuxedo rentals for our bridal customers.” reports Kyle. “We are confident that our customers will find value in a one-stop approach to planning their wedding and offering tuxedo rentals seemed like a natural fit (pardon the pun).”

Any bride will tell you that the costs involved in having a wedding mount up very quickly. The Flower Nook has developed a program to help with those

costs. “My arts background and my interest in graphic design seemed like a natural fit for the bridal portion of our business here in Portland,” says Kyle. “I enjoy designing invitations for the weddings, and our customers have come to appreciate the pricing benefit involved in the bundling of the orders.” The Flower Nook’s ability to provide invitations and programs, and in the near future tuxedos, assist in what Kyle referred to as “bundling,” to help the bridal party control costs. “We understand the expenses involved in all of the items and services required for a wedding. “By offering a bundle of products, we are able to help reduce the costs of that wedding and help make the process a little easier. Our customers do see value in our being able to provide a ‘one-stop shopping’ option.” The website for the Flower Nook (www. flowernook.biz) is filled with information about the many services and products available to customers. “We encourage everyone to visit our website and contact us electronically. “We understand that the convenience of viewing the different designs and products online is an important aspect of how people gather information from which to make their decisions.”
There is so much to do and so many decisions that need to be made as the process of planning a wedding takes place. The Flower Nook would like you to know that they understand that process. And, it is their goal to provide you with professional design and competitive pricing, all backed by their commitment to your 100%-guaranteed satisfaction.

EDDING WELLNESS
Your Way
by Mark Okoniewski
I
t will soon to be your special day – the day you have dreamed about since, as a little girl, you began planning your wedding. A lot of time and effort is invested in determining where, when, and who will attend your wedding. And, of course, deciding on the dress, bridal gowns and tuxedos is no simple task. But what about the people who you have chosen to be front and center with you at
the wedding? Who will make sure that you all look and feel your best? Rejuvenation Spa and Salon is available to you and your bridal party. “We understand that the women in the bridal party are an important part of the life of the bride. We want them to be able to enjoy the excitement and experience the energy that comes with getting ready for the big moment on their special day.

The Ideal Protein weight loss program seems to be a hit with a number of brides, as well as others in the wedding. “Especially after the busy holiday season, we see people looking for ways to shed a few pounds. “We offer weekly support and followup, giving you the education needed to be successful in keeping the weight off once you’ve completed the program.” And, after a long winter season, the tanning beds and infrared body wrap and sauna can help you look your best as you prepare for a spring wedding. “Infrared sauna is a passive weight loss method. A single sauna session can burn as many calories as jogging for 30 minutes. “The heat softens the fat tissue and it begins to break up, causing it to be released back into the blood stream in the form of calories to be burned up as energy.” Infrared sauna, body wrap and teeth whitening are available in single sessions or in packages. The primary focus of Rejuvenation Spa and Salon is the wellness of their customers. They are extremely committed to meeting and exceeding your expectations.
