RECLAIMING OLD

Article & Photos by Sylvia Marbach ■ ■ ■ Contact Swiss Building Systems of Bryant, Indiana, by calling Ruben Schwartz at (260) 301-6180

J

ohn and Ruben Schwartz grew up in Geneva, Indiana, where they began saving and selling the timber from old barns that were being taken down. To these brothers, seeing the salvageable wood go to waste was a shame, and they envisioned an innovative new way to put the timbers to good use. In 2000, the Schwartzes opened their business, Swiss Building Systems, in Bryant, based solely on saving the lumber from old barns. They use the barn lumber in construction—mainly timber frame houses and custom projects. Not only does this profession produce beautiful homes, but it is also an environmentally-friendly option that avoids just disposing of the wood. John, a father of three, has now been in the business for 13 years. He truly loves his

profession, claiming that everyday is different, new, and exciting. He says that taking a barn down is like finding a “new treasure chest.” According to John, his most notable project was transferring barn lumber to a ranch tucked in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Not only does he love his job, he also sees the advantage of saving the trees—an admirable accomplishment. John is tangibly passionate about the work he does; he absolutely loves everything about his job. His excitement and energy focused toward each day is obvious. From the motivation he finds for pursuing his job, to the beautiful new home this old timber is

5

capable of creating, John is visibly excited about every aspect of his occupation. Swiss Building Systems has been very successful, and it’s owners have high hopes for the future. Even in the tough economy, the business has prospered.

6

With only seven employees, the business has still seen tremendous growth, and there isn’t much competition in the area to threaten that development. Although using this type of wood isn’t necessarily cheaper—except in the case of conventional homes—the employees at Swiss Building

Systems seem satisfied, both with their positive contribution to the environment, as well as with their love of the job. John explains that he hopes to see exponential growth over the next two years and would love to see his business carried on in future generations of the family, if possible.

SAVE YOUR TAX DOLLARS - AND PREPARE FOR THE

FUTURE–

The process of removing the lumber from a standing barn to using it in the creation of a gorgeous home is a very interesting one. John says that he prefers wood from preCivil War barns. After deconstructing the old barn, the wood is inspected for damage—the powder post beetle being the primary destroyer of lumber in our area. The wood is then loaded onto a semi and shipped to an undisclosed location in Indianapolis, where it is processed, steam-cleaned, and hand-brushed. When the lumber is shipped back to the Schwartzes, it is used in a new construction project. In a short while, the disassembled barn becomes a beautiful custom home or other gorgeous new building. Rarely does Swiss Buildings Systems use any other kind of wood. If they do, it’s only because the engineer requires a newer type of wood for roofs. Apart from that single exception, Swiss Building Systems sticks to and prefers reclaimed lumber. This humble contracting business is not only a green option, giving used lumber a new purpose, but is also conquering the tough economy in great strides and holds increasing popularity. The buildings that use reclaimed barn lumber are indescribably lovely, and there are no significant negative factors to the process. John Schwartz and those who work at Swiss Building Systems have successfully taken something old and unwanted and transformed it into something new, beautiful, and unique. It’s as though this barn lumber is given a second chance to be something beautiful and different again. As the New Year begins, the reclaimed barn lumber can also serve as an illustration of how, with a little work, we, too, can become something reinvigorated and beautiful with the start of another year. leta Weiss spent two-and-a-half decades working as a pharmacy technician in Berne, Indiana. She knew the job well, and knew the people, even better. But Weiss was met with the prospect of an unexpected change in 2010, when her husband, Bill, called about a new opportunity in Willshire, Ohio. Aleta explains, “My husband had installed a lot of different flooring tile on the side for 33 years, but lost his good job and had to go back into the installing business.” She adds, “He installed for [the previous store owner] for awhile until she decided to start a family.

“He called me while I was working at the pharmacy, and said, ‘What do you think about buying that store?’” The store Bill was referring to was Willshire Home Furnishings, which was owned by a family in Decatur. Aleta was hesitant to accept the offer Bill was proposing, but also excited about the possibility to work alongside her husband—this had always been a dream of theirs. “My husband and I had always said that if we ever got a chance, or an opportunity opened up to where we could work together, then we’d do it. And, luckily, it finally happened,” Aleta says.

9

Transitioning from pharmacy technician to small business owner didn’t happen overnight. And, the decision wasn’t made lightly. Aleta had already taken some time off from the pharmacy when her dad became ill. “Dad was really sick, so I took personal leave for three years to help care for him. Then, I went back to work at the pharmacy for a little while.” Aleta continues, “I had started working as a pharmacy technician at Hooks in Berne, but it’s

CVS now. I worked there altogether for 26 years, and I remember having to write out receipts by hand. We were the ones who typed in all of the information on the prescription labels – now the computers do everything!” It certainly wasn’t easy leaving behind the pharmacy customers and the friendly faces she had met over the years. Aleta says, “I miss some of the old people who came into the pharmacy. But have kept up my relationships with the old customers there.”

She adds, “It was very hard to tell people at work that I was going to quit. My best friend, Becky, works at CVS, and her husband had kidney cancer, so it was hard to tell her – that little pharmacy was like family.” However, Aleta took on the challenge of learning a totally new career path and leaving behind what she knew best. As expected, the transition was tough. She recalls, “It was very, very confusing and very stressful. “I thought I left my stress at CVS, but I didn’t. Everything was brand new. “I was just thrown in here, cold turkey. My husband did the installing, but I knew nothing about running the store, so I’ve learned a lot about it on my own.” When Aleta and Bill bought Willshire Home Furnishings two years ago, they had little experience owning and operating a store. But with the warm welcome that the Wilshire community has given them, they feel more and more confident about their decision. Aleta reminisces, “My dad brought me here a lot when I was younger. My uncle used to have a pool hall, and there was card room next door. “I wasn’t allowed to go into the card room. I had to stay with the women in the variety store. “I enjoy being here and knowing what it used to be, and it’s allowed me to rekindle past relationships.” Aleta recalls opening day at the store with fondness. “The people of Willshire have put their arms open, and they’ve all stood behind us. No bad memories, everybody’s been really good. “The people, the friendships are important that I’ve made….that my husband has made. We’ve made a lot of friends.” Of course, the Weisses have reciprocated by doing what they can to help out in the community. Aleta says, “We support the

“We also took up Veteran’s Day donations for the honor flight they have.”

Willshire Home Furnishings means quite a bit to Aleta and her entire family. She explains, “It has become a close tie to my husband and me. We’ve always been really close, but to have something together like this, it just draws us closer.

Aleta and Bill also make one particular holiday a special one for the community. Each May, they take their furniture and other merchandise out of Wilshire Home Furnishings to make way for an elaborate Memorial Day display.

This tight-knit, family approach has trickled into the overall philosophy of Willshire Home Furnishings. Aleta and Bill proudly stand behind their work and are more than willing to fix any problems customers may experience. Aleta states, “I hope they feel free and know they can come to us, and realize that we’re honest people who will stand behind our work. Friendship means a lot in a small community.” She adds, “We offer flooring, furniture, primitive décor, and a friendly attitude. Our main priority is to make people happy and have good prices on things. “We’re going to try to stock more furniture, if we can. Our warehouse was taken away from us, so we’re going to try to figure something out. I wish we could expand a little bit on the different products we carry. “Only time will tell, because I don’t want to leave this quaint little building we have right now.” Aleta has gained some valuable experience. And, one of the biggest things she’s learned involves product quality. She explains, “I’ve learned the good furniture and the bad furniture. There are some things out there that are supposed to be good, that aren’t good. “I don’t take it personal if people don’t like the product. Same thing with flooring—it’s the very same thing.” Weiss is also realistic about what it takes to run a business in today’s economic climate. She offers some advice to prospective business owners, “I know there have been some lean times. It has not been a money-making project, right from the start. We’ve had some struggles in this economy.

“Just hang in there, because there will be times when you think, ‘Why did we ever do this?’” Now is definitely the time to stop by Willshire Home Furnishings. Aleta says, “We’re going to have 10% off on décor items and some flooring in January. Financing is available now, which we did not have before.” With dedication to good prices, quality products and customer service, it seems like Willshire Home Furnishings is finding a nice niche in the local furniture and flooring market. in Decatur Article & Photos by Mark Okonieski ■ ■ ■ Papino’s Pizza is located at 620 S 13th St in Decatur. Call in your order for pick up or delivery by dialing (260) 724-2211. See ad and menu on page 14!

W

ayne Wolf had spent the past twenty years of his career working for some of the largest and most successful pizza companies in the United States. And, when an opportunity to start an independent pizza place came his way, he grabbed it with both hands! “I was with Pizza Hut for five years, worked for Domino’s for a few years, and then, spent twelve years working within Papa John’s. During my later years with Papa John’s, I was sent to the new franchise locations or under-performing areas, in order to evaluate methods and improve efficiencies and performance.

Wayne then spent several years in charge of all franchise training efforts for Papa John’s and had offices in Louisville, Kentucky, and New Castle, Indiana. “I was responsible for ensuring that the new owners understood the corporate culture. “By replicating the proven methods in each, our sales and profitability performance were very consistent with the projections provided by corporate.” But, Wayne always wondered why there was so little flexibility. “The giants for whom I worked were not interested in catering to the local

15

tastes or needs. If it did not fit into their corporate equation, they simply were not interested.” While finalizing plans to open up a barber shop on a very busy section of U.S. Highway 27 in Decatur, Wayne learned about a unique opportunity available right across the street. The building that formerly housed Papa John’s Pizza and, later, Domino’s Pizza, was sitting empty. Empty, that is, except for the equipment used in the day-to-day operation of the facility.

“It seems that the former tenant made the decision to close his locations down and then file bankruptcy. They vacated the premises and left everything behind.” Wayne inspected the building and equipment and was surprised to find everything in very good condition. The facility had been unoccupied for a year. “Everything looked great! I couldn’t believe it.”

LEHMAN With little, if any, start-up capital required to launch a pizza delivery business, Wayne and a couple of his friends decided to begin the framework for this new venture. “We wanted to position ourselves to provide a product that was totally different from the corporate approach seen in all markets. “I learned through my years of making and selling pizzas that the most important piece of profitability is taking care of the customer, and I knew we could succeed. But, the challenge for us was to offer some unique that the consumers of Decatur would appreciate.” After much discussion and research, the decision was made to specialize in New York-style pizza. “As we worked towards coming up with the type of product to offer, we all agreed that New York-style pizza would be the best fit. “We discovered that the dough is the difference, and it took us a number of attempts to find the right mix, but we eventually found one.” The dough used for Papino’s New York-style pizza literally comes from a company in New York. Next, the various recipes for the varieties of toppings and cheeses were developed. “My experience in this industry helped us greatly, and we feel the spectrum of options for our customers is second to none.” “We were well into the process of finalizing our plans and were installing computer equipment and taking delivery of product when we finally settled on a name for our business venture.” Dozens of options had been discussed, dissected, and dismissed, and then, a delivery person from a vendor wrote a simple name down on a delivery receipt. “He just combined the names of the previous two tenants of the building. We looked at Papino’s, and all agreed it would work.” Papino’s offers pizzas in three sizes, and Wayne is quick to point out that the size of a Papino’s pizza is much larger than those of his competitors. “Our large pizza is 18 inches in diameter, which provides about 66% more pizza!”

Pizzas can be made to order, or you can choose from a number of specialty pizzas in 14, 16 or 18-inch diameter. “The recipes for our specialty pizzas have been designed to provide the besttasting pizzas on a New York style crust. We have been very happy with our customer’s response to our product offerings.” In today’s competitive market, the pizza provider has expanded their menu to include a number of items in addition to traditional pizza. Papino’s

also has breadsticks, cheese sticks, four varieties of wings, and calzones, as well as oven-baked sandwiches. “Our sandwich menu has become a favorite with a number of businesses in the Decatur market. For $5.99, you get an oven-baked sandwich, chips, pickle and a cookie. And, we can deliver right to your office door.” Cinnamon sticks, along with apple or cherry crisp pizza, complete the dessert menu.

N EW LESSONS LEARNED

at Appliance Store Article & Photos by Sylvia Marbach ■ ■ ■ Swiss City Maytag Home Appliance Center is located at the intersection of Behring and Water Street in Berne. See ad on page 16 for more details!

J

udy Schwartz, who was born and raised in Berne, recently became a business owner with her husband, Delbert. Together, they’ve made a number of changes over the past two years at their appliance store, located in Berne, Indiana. Armed with a couple years of experience, along with their hopes and goals for the future, this duo is prepared and determined to make their business a success. They anticipate new growth over the next few years. Becoming owners of this small business has brought on a round of challenges, experiences, and changes to the lives of the couple. They have resolved to overcome these trials, learn from their

mistakes, and incorporate their own ideas to their recently-purchased appliance center. On September 1, 2010, Judy and Delbert, the parents of four children, became official owners of what was formerly known as Miller’s Maytag. Judy’s father had owned the business for 10 years. Following much prayer, Judy and Delbert made the decision to become the new owners of the store. This was just the beginning of the changes and challenges the two would encounter together. Earlier this year, the Schwartzes renamed the business—now known as Swiss City Maytag Home Appliance Center. As most new businesses, growth at Swiss City Maytag has been slow, and,

31

still being fresh into this field, the couple is still learning new lessons, experimenting, and praying for growth of the appliance center. With disappointment, Judy admits a few difficult encounters with customers have been among some of the eye-opening experiences she’s had as owner of the establishment. She explains that not every customer can be taken for his or her word and that they can’t always be trusted—a lesson she was forced to learn the hard way.

32

Judy has also endured profanity from a customer who neglected to pay her bill. She still serves customers with a friendly and personable attitude—though she now has a special appreciation for customers who’ve proven trustworthy. Even with a few unpleasant experiences, Judy continues to keeps a positive outlook on the current state and future of Swiss City Maytag. Judy says that business has slowed this year.

In spite of this reduction, she holds onto hope. Judy’s goals for the future of the business include selling the old building and searching for a larger one along the highway, where it is more visible. Swiss City Maytag has also become associated with a buying group, which allows them to order an appliance or brand, even if they don’t carry that particular product. Judy says it’s a beneficial change but has failed to be extremely effective because most customers are not yet aware of the new service. Delbert opens the store each morning, and the day starts at nine. Judy’s job consists of paying bills, working with customers, answering the phone, doing paperwork, and cleaning.

ASSISTED LIVING Our Amenities Include: • 24-hour on-site staff • Medication reminders by hostess • On-site beauty salon • Pharmacy delivery • Planned activities • Weekly housekeeping/laundry

Not a SnowBird? Spend the Winter with Us—

Let Us Take Care of the Snow Removal!

It’s obvious that she loves her job—in particular, the interaction with other people. The appliance center attracts customers of all different ages and walks of life. From 90 year-olds to newly-weds, “everybody needs appliances,” Judy says. The business is still very small, with only two other employees, who work part time. Judy and Delbert’s business carries major home appliances by Maytag, along with a newly-added line of Kitchenaid countertop appliances, and various other appliance brands. They also sell vacuum cleaners and other accessories. Becoming owners of a small business has been a challenging, yet rewarding, experience for Delbert and Judy. The power of prayer provided them with an opportunity to become entrepreneurs. Only two years ago did the couple make the decision to put their names on this business, but that short time has provided them with an abundance of experience, challenges, and lessons learned. Embracing changes and challenges has been a major factor, so far, in the survival of this business. With hope, faith, and determination, Judy and Delbert learn from their mistakes and look toward their future with optimism. WVL

G IVING NEW LIFE

to Old Treasures Article & Photos by Mark Okonieski ■ ■ ■ Ya Ya’s Mid Century & Modern is south of the courthouse in downtown Bluffton. See ad on page 37 for more details!

S

tore owner Sheila Herdman has tapped into her passion for furniture and is now sharing that passion with the people in and around her community. The name chosen for the store will be familiar to many, and Sheila chose it for that specific reason. In fact, as you proceed to the counter in Ya Ya’s Mid-Century & Modern, you will notice a plaque with the following words: “A group of three or more women whose hearts and souls are joined together by laughter and tears shared through the glorious journey of life.” Sheila explains, “I really wanted to create a place where anyone, and, most specifically,

women, could stop in and spend some time in an environment that was friendly and inviting. “We work very hard to make sure that no one who visits us remains a stranger. Life is all about relationships, and I make sure every customer we have realizes that their relationship with me and our store is very important.” Sheila passionately shares her story. “I had been visiting garage sales and auctions and seeking out pieces of furniture and accessories for well over a year-and-a-half. well as the Eastlake Style, which reflects more of the Victorian era.” As her collection of furniture and accessories continued to grow, it became obvious that some method of sharing these treasures with others was a natural progression. “I tried listing a number of the items on a website, Etsy.com, but that did not fit my personality. “I prefer to deal with people on personal level, and conducting business over the internet simply was not my cup of tea.” Sheila’s father, Bill Gentis, is a well-known businessman in Bluffton, and she approached her father for his advice. “Dad suggested that I simply rent a booth in a local mall that specialized in collectibles. And, while that idea did sound interesting because of it’s simplicity, it just did not feel quite right.” Several months passed, with more buying and storing of items, as well as several more discussions with her father. Then, Sheila made an important decision. “I came to realize that I was a grown woman and did not need permission from my father to follow my dream.” “I have always considered myself a minimalist, and some of my friends and neighbors were somewhat concerned with the amount of goods I was acquiring.” The furniture designers Sheila admires most include Homer Laughlin and Herman Miller, as well as Edward Wormley. “I have always been drawn towards furniture designed in the 50s and 60s, as

She met with a commercial real estate agent who showed her the building that formerly housed Thoma Furniture. “My husband and I loved the building, and I immediately saw potential. “We spent the next month painting and preparing to launch my vision. I like to say that

we spent around $400 getting everything ready.” They first opened their doors to the public this past August. Sheila has been very interested in continuing education for most of her adult life, and that interest led to her involvement with Landmark Education. She had taken enough courses to qualify for attending and participating in a leadership course that required a substantial amount of time and commitment. “We met every Friday in Indianapolis for six months and followed those sessions with five weekends in Chicago. By the time the course had been completed, myself and another gentlemen were the only ones who graduated.” That leadership course would prove to be the major impetus for Sheila’s decision to open up a retail store, rather than simply rent a booth at a collectibles mall. “The leadership training showed me that I simply did not want to have any regrets in life. And, as I mulled over what my choices were, I understood that I needed to be decisive. “We all have to be willing to transform ourselves as we go through life. I have found that, for me, it is important that I look at things from the perspective of what the possibilities might be. “That is what I so enjoy about the types of furniture that excite me. I started with the intention of looking at and collecting things which I enjoyed. I then realized that for me, I needed to be open to the idea of changing and transforming myself. “I love to create and Ya Ya’s gives me that opportunity every day. “I am very proud of the fact that many of our items in inventory would have been taken to the landfill or disposed of in some other manner. I like to call what we do here in the store as the repurposing of seemingly unwanted furniture.” This core philosophy seems to resonate with one of their larger customer segments. “Young people between the ages of twentyfive and thirty-five like the idea of being socially and environmentally conscious. We find that a large percentage of our sales come from people in that age group.”

Rachel Douglas is the only formal employee of the business, other than Sheila, and, amazingly enough, they initially met at a garage sale. “I was on one of my many buying sprees and happened to visit a sale where Rachel was selling some items in order to help a friend’s family with some medical bills.” The two came into contact on several more occasions, both in person and on the phone. “I could not believe how many times I would call about an ad for an item that interested me, and the person on the other end of the phone ended up being Rachel.” When Sheila made the decision to open up her store, the logical choice was to hire someone

who shared her passion. “Rachel is perfect for Ya Ya’s. Her laugh is infectious, she has never met a stranger, and, on top of that, she is a great seamstress!” Marketing efforts have included some printed advertising, as well as the extensive use of social media. Of course, satisfied customers who share what they have discovered at Ya Ya’s have helped to expand their customer base, as well. However, Sheila is convinced that one of the most effective methods of reaching new customers is the front window display. “When we first opened we would change the window every Sunday in order to attract the attention of local people or those passing through town.

“And we found it to be a powerful form of advertising. “This storefront, for so many years, was a source of entertainment for downtown Bluffton, and it makes me feel very good to know that people are beginning once again to look forward to what will be displayed in it. “It is not unusual to hear the squeal of tires as someone driving down the street stops quickly to take a look at our displays.” Ya Ya’s Mid Century & Modern also refinishes and paints several of the pieces of furniture it acquires for their retail shop. A process which has become very popular among individuals who like this style of furnishings is called Annie Sloan Chalk Paint®. “We breathe new life into many of the items on our floor with chalk painting. It provides a regeneration for a table or dresser and allows the end user to custom tailor it to their individual needs.” As you walk through the many areas of Ya Ya’s, you will notice what appears to be an incredible number of individual and group displays of furniture, as well as accessories. “The staging of our items is one of the most important forms of marketing we have at our disposal. Our goal is to invite the person visiting our store to be drawn into an area that interests them.” There is an incredible number of items to peruse and from which to choose, and Sheila says she is currently in discussion with the owner of the building about expanding to the second floor or into the basement. “We need the room for some additions to the inventory and to implement some new ideas we have in mind.” It is easy to see that Sheila considers Ya Ya’s her current calling in life, and that each individual with whom she comes in contact is not just a customer, but rather, someone who will eventually become another friend. Sheila has always looked at the things and the people in her life from the perspective of what might be possible, and Ya Ya’s is testament to that fact. WVL

P ORTLAND’S NEWEST

Pizza Choice Article & Photos by Ashley Olson ■ ■ ■ 605 Pizza is located at 605 North Meridian Street in Portland, Indiana. Call (260) 766-4349 to place an order for carryout or delivery.

I

t all started five years ago with a quaint, 20seat restaurant in Berne, Indiana called The White Cottage. Kerri and Carson George’s vision was to create a family-friendly restaurant with a menu full of unique and tasty food. WhenThe White Cottage surpassed their expectations, they were able to open another restaurant in Portland called The Cottage Grill. The same standards were met at The Cottage Grill, and they quickly filled the larger, 80-seat establishment, which kept them very busy. Now the Georges are taking on a new restaurant challenge, appropriately-titled 605 Pizza, on 605 N. Meridian Street in Portland.

“We just opened in early October, and we are building our customer base,” Kerri says. “We’re still getting up and running. “605 was sort of the brain child between The White Cottage and The Cottage Grill.” A lot of loyal customers were shocked to hear of The Cottage’s closing and questioned what sparked the idea to switch gears when everything seemed to be going well. The truth is that Keri and Carson love pizza, and they saw an opportunity to jump in and offer something different.

41

Kerri explains, “It was one of those situations where opportunity, timing, and the location were just right for it. This was a former Domino’s pizza place, so the equipment was already here, making it an easy transition. “We love pizza, and almost everyone I know loves it. I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t like pizza!

“It became one of those things where we can make really quality pizzas without purchasing a bunch of equipment upfront.” 605 Pizza began taking form in June of 2012 when the couple signed a lease on the former Domino’s building. It took months to prepare for the opening day, which involved everything from creating the perfect, hand-made dough, to deciding what items would be on the menu.

“We’ve been coming in and getting things together – you have to look at where to start when making pizza dough.” Kerri says. “I’ve made pizza dough at home plenty of times, but on the commercial side of it, where you’re making large batches of dough, I didn’t know anything about that. “It really wasn’t ready to open until October. It’s kind of been a collective process from March or April to now.” According to Kerri, the idea for 605 Pizza arose from talks with her husband, as well as comments from others. She recalls, “It was mostly a conversation between Carson and me, then we started having some conversations with employees and customers about what they do and don’t like about pizza around town. “What we wanted to do is make the highest quality pizzas. It was just kind of brewing in the background, and then we started getting more into it—mostly between the two of us. We had a vision for this place and started it.”

Addressing any rumors that may have been swirling about why The Cottage Grill closed despite its success, Kerri says, “Closing the Cottage had nothing to do with business. The work there was exhausting—we were doing everything by hand there. “It was literally, go in at 8 a.m. and be done by 10:30 p.m. everyday. We had to have different priorities with wanting to start a family.” She adds, “At the Cottage there were 28 employees and 80 seats to juggle. We went from 80 seats to a carry-out business, which is easier to manage.” Everyone who enjoyed the food at The Cottage Grill will be able to find a new favorite at 605 Pizza. “A lot of things that people love about The Cottage will be in the pizzas. We’ll have The Cottage Pizza, which is very similar in tastes and ingredients to Cottage food. “There are things and experiences that we’re bringing from there to here. One of the popular items was the Barbeque Chicken Sandwich, so we make a BBQ chicken pizza. It’s still the same BBQ sauce and other sauces that we used at the Cottage.

“We are kind of paying tribute to the Cottage because we wouldn’t have learned what a high quality BBQ sauce or cheese was if we hadn’t worked there. “We had a really good response at the Cottage, and because the Reuben sandwich was a customer favorite we’ve added a Reuben Pizza,” Kerri says. “Not everybody likes it, but if you’re looking for something different and you like Reuben, you might love it! “We’re always trying to do something different. We also offer wings with honey pecan flavor, just like our honey pecan chicken at The Cottage.

“The pizza is good. It’s really high quality, especially for the price. We actually use whole mozzarella cheese. “We make fresh dough—not frozen, ever—and the quality of the meat and vegetables is really high. Pizza just makes people happy, and actually creating a good product that you’re proud of is nice.” 605 Pizza is much more than just a pizza place to Kerri and Carson. Their employees have become like family, and the Georges look forward to going to work each day.

Being a part of the community has been important to both of them from the very start. “The first week was just lots of good memories wrapped up into one. We saw so much support, and it went so well,” Kerri says.

Now that they have a more manageable schedule, the Georges have plenty of time to do what they do best: make good food. “The goals for 605 Pizza are simple – to create good food for the community and offer a variety to suit every palate. “You’ll find classic pizzas, along with unique flavors, and you can even create your own by choosing a special sauce and your own toppings. But, the most important goal is to make people happy. “And, we want to keep the prices reasonable while presenting the highest quality food that we can.” With five years in restaurant management and plenty of experience making delicious food, Kerri certainly has some good advice to offer perspective business owners. She suggests, “Know your market—that’s a big key. Know that you have something different. “Don’t underestimate the amount of time you’re going to put into it—your job doesn’t end when the food’s made. There’s also taxes and payroll, and, if there’s a bad week, you’re the one who has to figure out what went wrong. “All of the businesses we’ve had become a part of you – you have to really know what you’re getting into. If you just kind of like to cook, and you open a restaurant, people are going to know that you just kind of like to cook.” WVL
