wenty years ago, Cindy Reusser was a stay-at-home mother of two young children, while her husband Neal was working. “I was always interested in art,” she says, and “to earn to extra money,” she began selling crafts, such as birdhouses and paper mache products. One day, Cindy brought home a candle embedded with flowers and botanicals, but realized it may be a fire hazard to light. “We were talking about it, and I said, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if we could illuminate this candle and make it safe?’” Cindy began experimenting with candle making. “My dad was still living, then, and he helped me develop the first mold,” Cindy explains. “We took it to market in January of 1999. We’ve been selling them ever since.”
Cindy says the development of her product involved “a lot of trial and error.” She continues, “I had to research everything on candle making. I didn’t know anything about wax.” With Neal’s help, she started with a turkey roaster, which only held about 10 pounds, to melt the wax. “We could only make twelve a day when we started, and we thought that was a good day,” Cindy recalls. Today, the Reussers own a hundred-pound melt. “I can pour hundreds of candles, if need be. We’ve upgraded our equipment – that really helps. “This is our fourth location – we’ve grown enough and changed enough that we’ve had to move four times.”
7
CR Designs receives raw slabs from wax suppliers. “We get two thousand pounds of wax at a time. We blend it and put additives in it. Then, they’re all hand-poured into the candle (mold).”
“He lets it cool completely. It just shrinks and pops right out of the mold. Then, he’ll clean up that hole with a drill press. The art process starts on top of that.”
The melted wax, heated and poured at 220 degrees, is cooled for just the right amount of time. “(Trevor will) pour that, and then, he’ll go back about an hour-and-a-half later. He’ll cut a hole in the top and pour out some of the hot wax that’s still there, and, by that time, we have about a half-inch shell around the edge.
The designs are engraved on the candle with a machine. “With a drawing program on the computer, I draw out the design I want. Then, I send it to the engraving machine, which copies it down.” From there, employees add paint and glitter, different types of layered designs and other finishing touches.

CR Designs has a wide customer base. “We sell to 38 states and Canada, and we do some overseas, too.” Neal adds that about 95% of business is done outside of Berne. One major attraction to these candles is that they’re considered “green,” since they use a 60-watt or lower bulb as the source of light, rather than a brighter one or an actual flame. As for battery-operated lights, Cindy advises, “They have a real orange to greenish glow on those battery candles.” And, they aren’t bright enough to illuminate the detailed artwork on the candle. CR Designs has changed over the years to accommodate the demands of the customer. “The basic concept has always been the same, but I follow trends,” Cindy explains. “It’s kind of just evolved and changed, with the electric candles being our focus now.” They’ve also begun selling seasonal candles year-round, rather than just during one season. The Reussers also manufacture a few other home décor products. Jacob Wickey at French Township Woodshop makes all of their wood pieces. “All our bases and our wood products, that portion of it is from Jake,” Neal states. “I just give Jake a rough sketch of what I want a base to be, and some dimensions,” Cindy says. “He’s an integral part of our business; he does all of our furniture, all our bases and all our pedestals,” Neal explains. Customers also admire the quality of the products sold at CR Designs. They only use materials from the U.S.A., while other companies have tried the same product, using cheaper supplies from overseas. Customers return to CR Designs, praising the quality of their work. “We had gone overseas, and the quality wasn’t good. We had problems with the pedestals splitting and cracking. We had problems with color – paint would chip off – wiring wasn’t wired right. “When we went to being all U.S.A.-made, we thought, People are going to complain because the price goes up. But, they didn’t because they saw the quality was so much better.

“Now, people search out U.S.A.-made companies, and we’re finding it’s helping us to be known,” Cindy explains. “People are excited about that because they want to know it’s a family business, they want to know you’re supporting your community, they want to know you’re keeping the dollars at home instead of the dollars overseas, and that’s one of the thing’s that’s really helped our business grow.” For the past fourteen years, Cindy and Neal Ruesser have gone to trade shows six weeks out of a year every other year. “It’s not as glamorous as people think it is,” Cindy says.

Although other corporations have attempted to copy Neal and Cindy’s idea, they’ve all failed. “All of those companies took our product and had it made in China,” Cindy says. “That used to scare us. “They took it overseas, and they cut our price in half. I lost customers for a period when that happened, but then, they came back.”

Kennedy Manufacturing Co. Article & Photos by Ashley Olson ■ ■ ■

here was only one employee when Kennedy Manufacturing was first established, and his name was Howard Kennedy. Previously, he worked as an engineer with the Pennsylvania Railroad. During his days with the railroad, Kennedy kept running into the same problem: his cloth tool bags were quickly ruined by the harsh work he was doing. These frustrations led him to create an all-metal suitcase that was both durable and dependable. In the beginning, Howard worked out of his garage in Fort Wayne, Indiana. After making his first suitcases, he got requests from other railroad engineers, who wanted their own metal case to protect tools. Howard’s all-metal suitcases were a regional hit, and, with some help from his brother, Charles Kennedy, who worked as an advertising executive with the J.
Walter Thompson Company in Chicago, he was able to turn a great idea into a full-fledged career. In 1911, the two-man company launched and began producing their tool kits. Howard maintained the factory out of Fort Wayne, while Charles served as the secretary, treasurer, and general manager. Just three years later, the Kennedys decided to move their operation from Fort Wayne to Van Wert, Ohio. Shannon Williams, Kennedy Sales and Marketing Manager, says, “In 1914, we moved from Fort Wayne to Van Wert, due to the urging of the businessmen in Van Wert.” After the success of the steel suitcase, the brothers began making their 22” Cantilever Tool Boxes – a product still produced by Kennedy today. With this product, they were able to offer people up to
13
six compartments in each of two trays, along with moveable or removable partitions and divider sets. The Cantilever Tool Box also features quality-plated locking hardware and a steel core, vinyl-cushioned handle. The product expansion continued over the years and helped Kennedy Manufacturing reach the size they are today. The company now employs more than 90 people from the Van Wert area and proudly continues the hand-crafted, American made-quality that Howard Kennedy was known for so long ago.
Kennedy has been good to these 90 workers, too, as evidenced by how long many of the employees stay with the company. “I’ve been here for over three years, and it’s a great place to work,” Williams says. “Most of the people who come to work here are young, and they stay until they retire.” Some of the most popular products that the Kennedy Manufacturing employees make are the mechanics’ and machinists’ chests and bases. A high-security tubular locking system, heavy-duty plated side handles, and heavy-duty drawer slides holding up to

80 pounds are just some of the features of the mechanics’ and machinists’ chests and bases. One of Kennedy’s more interesting products isn’t typically used for storing tools or found in garages; instead, they’re medical cabinets, which are found in hospitals, nursing homes and medical facilities. The company has been making these medical cabinets with hightech, keypad-locking mechanisms. And, the medical line offers the same quality as all of Kennedy’s other chests and cabinets. Aside from tool chests and steel cabinets, workbenches are another big staple at Kennedy. And, what’s great about these benches is that they can be customized to fit the buyer’s needs. Customization isn’t just relegated to the benches, though. Kennedy can do pretty much anything to specifications. And, as the company grows, so do available options, like colors, shapes and sizes. “We have 28 available paint colors now, and we just added a new finish. We have approximately 300 standard chests and cabinets, and upwards in the 500 range of customized products and accessories – what size of drawers do you want or what colors?” As one might guess, every Kennedy product is made from large sheets of steel. In fact, this is about the only material that you’ll find, as Williams advises, “The only plastic that you’re probably going to find is in the handles or drawer dividers.” One important non-physical ingredient that goes into Kennedy products involves engineering. After all, this process determines how each product will be made. “Everything starts with the engineering. “Once the print is released to fabrication, the flat piece of steel, known as a blank, goes through a brake and form operation, then through a welding operation. From there, the product is released to paint, where it receives a powder coat paint finish – then released to assembly and quality inspection. “After it passes quality, the product is packaged and sent to our shipping department.” Williams adds, “We’re always expanding our line, tweaking it – we’ve recently come out with some ergonomic handles. We’ve come out with a hang-on tool board so you can hang it on the side of a cabinet.

“There’s always something new that we’re coming out with, and we have our main lines. We have our industrial series, heavy-duty workstations, steel tool board, and our accessories that go into each one of our toolboxes.”
Williams adds, “We go through strict quality checks to make sure the product is perfect – we want it to be perfect for you. We are constantly improving on the process all of the time and making sure that customers get the best product possible.”
Engineers also improve on current product lines. After the engineering department perfects the drawings and concepts, they begin mapping out ways to make the drawing come to life.
If you’re interested in shopping for Kennedy Manufacturing products, you are in luck, because they’re carried at several locations in Indiana and Ohio. Some Indiana distributors include Baker Industrial Supply in Logansport, Haggard & Stocking in Indianapolis, Industrial Supply in Terre Haute, and Quality Mill Supply in Franklin.
They take the time to find the most effective way to bend and mold steel into shapes required for the new product. Once these engineers have a blueprint that outlines steps in which a product will be made/ improved upon, it’s ready for assembly. When a Kennedy tool chest or workbench is made, everyone in the factory has a part in putting it together. The Kennedy Manufacturing work force believes in producing quality products, which is why they’ve managed to stay in business for so long. “Everybody is involved – the whole plant. Everybody has a hand in making the box. And, that includes your customer service, because they’re making sure that the customer gets what they want. “And, we don’t make these products much different than he (Howard) did in the 1900s.” As for how Kennedy Manufacturing gets their quality merchandise to the public, it’s all about the distribution. “We go through a distribution process. We don’t carry our products in traditional retail stores. We also have our own retail store (in the factory) that is open one Saturday a month.”

Snider Tire/Fleet Solutions Article by Mark Okoniewski

verywhere we look today, there is a sincere interest in our environment and how we might assist in managing the limited resources of our planet. Most communities have some type of recycling program, and a large number of us participate in them, to some extent. Not many people are aware of the fact that there is a growing and thriving business located in Bluffton, Indiana, that provides for a vital need in the transportation industry, while supporting the public’s concern for our environment. Snider Tire has been one of the leading suppliers of retread tires and reconditioned wheels in northern Indiana for the past 27 years. Dave Double has been the owner of the Snider Tire facility, since it began in his barn in 1986. “I think people are very surprised when they learn that our process uses, literally, every scrap of the
■ ■ ■ tire that goes through our retreading process. Absolutely nothing is wasted.” Dave began his career as a driver for Snider Fleet Solutions and quickly made the decision that he was much more comfortable in a sales position. “We used to sell the tires right out of the trailer, back in those days, but business grew to a point where a trailer could not hold enough inventory.” At that point, Dave spent most of his time selling to his customers, and was storing inventory in his barn. In 1986, Dave hired a driver so that he could take care of the sales and administrative portion of the business. Business continued to grow, as the retread industry began to gain traction, and in 1991, the decision was made to move into a larger facility. A warehouse in Uniondale became home to Dave’s business.
17
New customers were developed, and, in 1994, a second building was added in the Uniondale area, as the business continued its growth. “We were beginning to wonder what we would do next. The quality of the retread product was improving, and acceptance of its use was continuing to expand.”
facility began with the parent corporation. “Snider Tire wanted to look at another location for a new facility that would house the retreading process, and they wanted me to move to that city. They were very interested in a location outside of this immediate area.
Luckily, for Dave and his business, a discussion on where to permanently locate a new retread
“I did not wish to relocate and lobbied very hard for the choice of location to be Bluffton.

Fortunately, they were open to my ideas, and we succeeded in convincing them to invest in the Bluffton community.” The facility was opened in January 1999, and today employs 64 full-time employees. The Bluffton location for Snider Tire is the official Michelin® retread facility for this region of the country. “We retread 1,650 tires every week. We have three shifts and are very close to full capacity.” One of the largest expenses for companies who use commercial motor vehicles in their day-to-day business is tires. There are some estimates that put that cost as high as 30-35%.

Companies that choose to retread their tires typically will see a 30-40% reduction in tire costs. “Original drive tires will last anywhere from 220,000 to 275,000 miles. We then put them through the Michelin® retread process, which legitimately will add another 220,000 to 275,000 thousand miles on that tire.” But, that isn’t all. Assuming that the tire casing, or original form of the tire, is not damaged up to this point, it can be retread a second and third time. But, after multiple retreads, the tire must be used on a trailer. “We anticipate 150,000 to 200,000 highway miles per retread on our trailer tires.” That is almost one million miles per tire casing, and for some applications and companies, the tire could last for ten years. A drive tire is brought to the retread facility, where the remaining tread is ground off of the casing, or original skeleton, of the tire. The next step in the process is a thorough inspection, with both the naked eye and with computers. “We carefully inspect side wall integrity and look for any punctures in the flat surface of the tire.” Once it passes the inspection process, a final buffing takes place to prepare for the application of the new tread. A Michelin®supplied tread design is applied, using both a bonding agent and a heating process, in order for the two surfaces to become one.

“The curing process takes exactly 96 minutes, and we are able to fit 22 tires in the curing chamber. Everything we do, from a scheduling perspective, is centered on that 96-minute interval.” The Bluffton facility of Snider Tire recently completed a 20,000-square foot expansion to make room for a popular service offered to customers. Now, a state-of-the-art powder coating system transforms a used wheel into likenew condition. Snider Tire will pick up the old tire and wheel, and within 24 hours, have the wheel reconditioned, retreaded, remounted, and on its way back to the customer. “We have a large number of customers who want to have their wheels reconditioned at the same time they change their tires.” The technique previously employed an airless sprayer and a container, in which the tire was put, in order to limit the amount of overspray. The expansion has provided a mechanized method, which has increased productivity and improved overall quality. “Our new powder coating process is up and running, and we are now processing seven to eight thousand steel wheels per month. We expect that number to grow to over 100,000 wheels this year.” Some of the larger regional companies to whom Snider Tire provides this type of service include
FedEx Freight, Estes, Superior Carriers and Cary Transit. “We also pick up and deliver 800 wheels and recaps for J. B. Hunt and their Chicago maintenance facility every week. That keeps two trailers busy nonstop.” As with any business opportunity, location is vital to the company’s success. “The Bluffton area has been very good for us. We could not have asked for a better business environment, and the community has provided us with so many good employees. “When I began working out of my barn, there was myself and one other employee. I have been blessed to work with quality people during the past 27 years.” Dave is planning on passing the torch at Snider Tire this December. “Sixty hours a week has taken its toll over the years, and I just feel that it is time to slow down.” He has spent the past months working with the gentleman who will take over for him but still plans on coming in a couple days a week. “I assured him that I won’t completely disappear, and that I will be there if there any problems, or if they need my help.” The next time you are driving down the highway and see an eighteen-wheeler, there is a pretty good chance the tires on the tractor or trailer were recapped at Snider Tire in Bluffton. Pennville Custom Cabinetry Article & Photos by Ashley Olson

etermined to get a $47 table saw, Edgar Martz made a deal with his wife that if he got it, he’d build her a new kitchen – and he did. Soon thereafter, Martz got laid off from the Portland Forge and decided to make cabinets with his free time. People began to notice Martz’s cabinets and asked if he could make some for them. He became quite busy during the layoff, and when Portland Forge called him back, Martz declined and became a full-time cabinet maker instead. Eventually, Martz sold his business to Stanford C. Goldman, owner of Commercial Electric Company. Goldman moved the business from its Pennville location to Portland, quadrupled the square footage of the manufacturing facility, added a marketing team, set up a management department, and added a skilled production team.
■ ■ ■ It was about this time that Stanford’s son, Mark, got his first taste of Pennville Custom Cabinetry. Mark Goldman toured the factory at the age of five and was immediately interested in the cabinet-making business. Mark says, “I took over as president in 1990. I’d like to pass on the family tradition to my recentlyborn daughter someday.” He adds, “This company is less about making money and more about making a difference in the world. Many other companies in America like to play monopoly—where they build a business up and sell it off at a profit. “Pennville Custom Cabinetry isn’t about that.” Like many local businesses, Pennville Cabinetry has been heavily affected by the current recession.
29
“We’re at 27 employees right now. At the peak of the market, we had 56. We were in a terrible place, but we’re growing again. We were doing construction for million-dollar homes, and that market went down by 90%, which hit us hard.”
Selling wholesale to the public is Pennville Cabinetry’s “x-factor,” as Mark puts it. He says, “We literally sell cabinets at wholesale prices. It’s like if you could buy a Mercedes at half-price, a lot more people would be purchasing these cars.
With the high-end home market waning, Pennville Custom Cabinetry relied on the local market to remain successful. “The Portland community really supported us during the recession.
“Our big x-factor is that we make the world’s best cabinets at the best prices imaginable.”
“And, because of this, I want to keep selling highend wholesale cabinets to the public. There were months when Portland was the main source of support for us.”

Looking at the company’s showroom, next door to the factory, one can really get a sense of why Mark believes his cabinets are the world’s best. Not only are they well-crafted, painted and stained masterfully, but the customizations seem endless.

“We’re really custom beyond what people think is custom. We’ve done cabinets for kitchens worth anywhere from $7,500 to $175,000. “We did kitchens for former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, Alan Jackson and Kelly Ripa. Price was less of an issue to them than it is to people around here who are just trying to get good quality cabinets.” One of the reasons this company is able to turn out such quality cabinets is because of their skilled workforce. “Half of the people we have here have been making cabinets for over 25 years. The people who work for us aren’t just regular factory workers – they’re skilled cabinet makers.” The Pennville Cabinetry employees really appreciate the detail and challenge of their work. One of the company’s engineers, Eric Harrell, says he likes working for Pennville Custom Cabinetry because of the interesting projects that get sent his way. “Some of the things that we’re doing here, you just don’t see done at other places. “For instance, right now, I’m designing a big mahogany cabinet that’s set to go to North Carolina. It used to be a hutch, and they want it reworked to suit their needs. You can’t find very many places that can do that, and do it as well as we do, these days.” Goldman says, “Pretty much everybody has a hand in making a cabinet. For every person on the floor, we make approximately two cabinets every week. “With the amount of work that’s going into each cabinet, you have an average of half a week of human labor going into every cabinet. We can do pretty much anything you draw.

“As for the process of making cabinets, we start with rough wood. We put that through a gang rip saw, and we tool all the panels on a computerized panel with CNC routers.” Goldman adds, “We use a variety of woods on the cabinets including maple, cherry, walnut, lyptus, teak, pine, pecan, oak and mahogany.” Pennville Custom Cabinetry is continually trying to improve their manufacturing process. “We go to other countries and see how other factories work. We’ve been to factories all over Europe, in order to see the processes they use to do things.

“What Europe has that’s different is that they make cabinets with almost no human intervention. They’ve got robot arms that put panels on. “Of course, somebody still has to build all those machines and make and program the software. But they’re less hands-on when making cabinets – Europe is much more automated than the biggest companies in America.” While Pennville Custom Cabinetry is far more hands-on than many factories in Europe and other countries, they still use technology to make their products. Harrell says, “Technology is very important with what we’re doing here. Our company’s main thing is cabinet customization, and making products that are higher quality than the rest of the industry. “People can have off days. So, you might have a really good cabinet maker who isn’t having a good day, and they mess up on a panel. Machines provide consistency for some of the more tedious projects.” With its mix of human and machinebased labor, Pennville Custom Cabinetry is certainly doing their part to further American manufacturing. Mark says, “If we (United States) just keep trading services with ourselves, but keep buying stuff from China – all of our money’s in China. Almost every new manufacturing plant that’s being built here is foreignowned.

“So, it’s critical to the American economy that we encourage manufacturing in the future. “I’m pretty active with workforce development, and it’s really important to me that Americans understand the importance of manufacturing. I feel that people really need to realize the opportunities in manufacturing today. “It’s not what your grandparents’ manufacturing looked like. It’s hightechnology and high-skilled labor – everybody is proud of what we put out the door. “Our mission statement is we make the world’s best cabinets. Obviously, there are some pretty good competitors out there, but we feel that we’re the best.” WVL

Aqua Blast Corp. Article & Photos by Mark Okoniewski

visit to the Grand Canyon offers a breath taking view of the awesome power of rushing water. And, for many, the story of Moses and his parting of the Red Sea with God’s incredible power is indelibly etched into memory from childhood. Richard Yergler, the owner of Aqua Blast, has developed a worldwide niche by putting that same power of water to use in the business he purchased in 1989. The core business began in rural Decatur in early 1962, and the focus was simple - supply a high-quality power washing system to farms in the immediate region of northern Indiana. The previous owner hired Richard as a member of their sales team in February of 1987. His primary responsibilities were to attend trade shows, where their product would be demonstrated, and to continue the work of building the dealer/ distributor network.
■ ■ ■ While the primary focus of the Aqua Blast product line was the agricultural community, Richard discovered, very early in his sales career, the boundless possibilities in other industries. He explains, “Up until that time, we sold exclusively east of the Mississippi. The philosophy was soundly based on the ability to service the local farmers and businesses that needed our product. “However, I saw the need for the development of these types of cleaning systems that could be tailor-made to the specific application. Not every customer’s need fit neatly into our product offering.” Richard soon began not only developing relationships with companies in the industrial segment, but took on the task of personally designing the systems that were needed. “I made myself available to any customer, anywhere in the

world, for system design, installation, or, even, if they needed someone to come and trouble shoot a problem with their system.
1989. “Our ability to design and custom-install our power washing equipment sets us apart from virtually all of our competition.
“Once, I spent three days near the Panama Canal assisting a local entity with determining the problem they were having with one of their units.”
“We have equipment involved in washing coal belts for utility companies, oak barrel cleaning systems for the wine industry, and a number of custom applications for our customers in the food industry.”
As Richard’s successful strategies continued to fuel sales and revenue streams, he made the decision to purchase the company in March of

Aqua Blast are from customers outside of the U.S. “Our number one destination for product, just two years ago, was the African continent. It was also home to our most successful distributor that year!” The company was straining the confines of the airplane hanger it had moved to in 1985, and it was not a difficult decision for Richard to design and build a new facility at their current home in the industrial park in Decatur, Indiana. “We needed the room, were desperate for additional office space, and this location has worked out very well for us.” A technology that is becoming very popular for dealing with debris clogging pipes of any kind is the Aqua Blast jetter attachment. “A number of resorts and large hotel facilities have added this option as part of their overall maintenance program. We are able to provide easy-to-use attachments that allow their staff to proactively address drainage issues without having to bring in an outside service!”

Some of the more impressive names within Aqua Blast’s customer portfolio include all three branches of the military, a number of city and government agencies, and Missouri’s Diamondhead Country Club, as well as Purdue University and the University of Texas. Customers in the food industry include Keebler®, Campbell’s®, Pepsi and Coca-Cola®. The categories recognized in the power washing industry include the five following ratings – Throwaway, Consumer, Light Duty, Industrial and Heavy Industrial. “Our primary sales focus for Aqua Blast is in the Industrial and Heavy Industrial categories. It is in these specific customer niches where our ability to custom-design and then install the unit is extremely rare, and, often, the most critical component in closing the sale. “The range of equipment we sell can produce anywhere from 900 to 60,000 PSI, while jetting water at a rate of 2 to 650 gallons per minute. There are not too many high-pressure applications in which we cannot meet the customer’s needs or expectations!” Aqua Blast also designs their systems to be permanently mounted in a central location with easy hookups, or, they can be completely portable. of accessories that can be utilized in conjunction with their systems provides another level of flexibility that is unequaled in the marketplace. “We have a number of customers from all over the U.S. who bring in trucks and trailers, in order for us to design and mount a cleaning system for any number of types of uses. In fact, we have in our shop a soon-to-be-completed bucket truck application, where the power washing capability will be available right from the bucket, itself.” As part of the purchase of the corporation, Richard also became the owner of a second-design product called Spraz-All. “We have resurrected our Spraz-All brand name, in order to provide a low cost, quality alternative to what is commonly referred to as a “throwaway” power washing system. “The large box stores have been selling this type of power washer to the household consumer for the past number of years, and we felt it was time for us to enter that market.” The typical power washer, at the low end of the spectrum, has a life expectancy of 50-100 hours. “For most people, who use it once or twice a month to spray off a deck or sidewalk, that type of system will last ten years. “The use of plastic components contributes to the relatively short life cycle. We have chosen to use a higher quality pump that can actually be rebuilt.”

The end result is a higher quality product at a slightly higher price. J & M Manufacturing Co. Article & Photos by Ashley Olson ■ ■ ■

stablished in 1960, J&M Manufacturing has become one of the most successful grain handling equipment manufacturers in the world. Brothers Jerome and Maurice Grieshop started J&M in Fort Recovery, Ohio, where it still stands today. Jerome was a precision craftsman, while Maurice was a creative thinker. Together, this two-man operation worked diligently to create farming equipment that was not only functional, but made to last, as well. Maurice’s son, Jeff, says, “The original building they bought for J&M used to be Garlock Machines, where Fort Recovery Lumber Company was. But, most of the original building is gone, due to us remodeling over the years. We’ve had quite a few expansions.
“They were already building wagons and elevators, so naturally, we were able to get started with that. As the farming progressed and changed, so did we. “With a lot of hard work and prayer and with the grace of God, we were able to get to where we are today. Right now, we are close to 170 employees.” A fair number of these current employees are in the Grieshop family, too. Jeff says, “I have a brother (Jerry), three cousins, and two brother-inlaws working here. And, we’ve even got the third generation working at J&M now. “Our goal is to have the company keep growing and growing to support their families’ needs.”
41
In March of 1960, J&M showed off the first gravity flow box with a 127-bushel capacity. A year or so after that, they began manufacturing farm elevators compatible with the heavy-duty, 6-ton running gear that was also introduced for small grain, corn, baled hay and straw. “Like everything in farming, everyone wants to do things bigger, faster and better,” Grieshop states. “We built a peanut box in the 80s when business was slow – we built this for three years, then the market went south. We got into the grain cart business and then we went off of that.
“We feel our quality is better than others. We offer different designs than others, and we received a patent, which was a shot-in-the-arm that helped the company grow from 200-300 carts a year to now building 2-3,000 annually. “Now, we are making seed tenders, head movers and soil conditioners. We were able to expand on grain carts from the 450-bushel, to 525, to 650-bushel.” Those passing by on the highway during farming season may think that every grain cart is made equally – but they couldn’t be more wrong. “There

are about 900 different ways a guy could order a grain cart, with many different options available.” Jeff says, “Farmers have their own way of thinking and doing things and have ideas on the best way to do it for them. Like tire configurations, for one example, there are different options there. “We try to get the bulk of what the farmers need and have it available to them with different options and colors. When we first started, our trademark color was red. Then, people would say ‘I might like that in green or yellow or blue,’ so we added to the options. “We did green and red, then blue, and caterpillar yellow, and we’ve even painted one purple and yellow. It was for a guy who really liked LSU (Louisiana State University), so we did that, and it was really neat.”

“From welding, the parts go to the paint booth. During the paint process, the metal is cleaned thoroughly because it can’t be dirty in any way when the paint is applied. Once the parts are dry, they go to assembly, and finally, the shipping yard.” The number of grain carts that J&M can have fully-assembled in an eight hour shift is 10, which is an impressive feat. The number of other products they offer varies based on the size, and if the order was a custom order. “We can put out a dozen to 30 a day of smaller products. The smaller the item, naturally, the more you get out.” The J&M workforce has been a huge part of their success. Jeff says “It’s all done with a lot of good employees. I can’t stress enough how good the work force is here. People often ask us what our biggest problem is, and for some businesses it may be finding good workers – but we haven’t seen that side of it yet.

We employ people from Mercer and Jay County for the most part, but there are a few guys from Darke County and others. “We’ve been growing steady for the last few years and hope to keep growing. We have been expanding every year, and with the expansions, we’ve been adding about 5 guys to the work force each year.” With the season changing from winter to spring, the workers at J&M are seeing a shift in their product orders. “With the seed tender, we are able to get out 10 a day. They are really selling like hot cakes because it’s a spring item, and the farmers will be getting their fields ready. It’s been a good product for us.” There is no question that J&M has been extremely successful in Ohio and Indiana. But they’re also doing business in 30 different US states – and beyond. “We are real heavy in Canada, and we are also selling in several different countries.” Jeff adds, “We’ve been in Australia, selling stuff there. We’ve sold to Saudi Arabia, Russia and Germany. We are trying to take the overseas market.

“There are lots of farmers in America, and we are going for market shares of 20 different other companies that make similar products as us. We feel like we are number two in the US grain cart business. The next horizon is the overseas market so that we can keep everybody busy here.” J&M Manufacturing Co. products are sold through dealers. In the US and Canada, there are approximately 700 dealers working with J&M to bring in more business. The company is also doing quite a bit with their product line, as well. “We’ve got six engineers constantly trying to improve products or making new products. Right now, we have three or four new in the works. “We are hoping to have a new product this spring to expand our line. Engineers try to produce something new each year – at the same time, we try to improve current products.” Jeff says, “We’ve never really seen a downside in the farming economy during this recession. Farming is good, so we’ve been extremely blessed with that.” WVL

ROMAN D. SCHWARTZ CO. 2851 W 350 S, BERNE Voicemail (260) 589-1416 Hours By Appointment Roman and Malinda Schwartz first began selling animal health products from a clock shelf in their home in 1960. Roman also offered animal health services on farms. In 1965, the Schwartzes purchased a meat canning business, erected a new building, and combined the two businesses. Unfortunately, the canning business closed in the 1970s, due to new federal laws regarding meat processing. Roman later earned his license as a pesticide applicator. His grandsons continue to operate the pesticide application business. The Schwartzes still work, as they can, and have an entire room devoted to animal health products. Their son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren also help with the business. They say, “God has been good to us!”

SavinGS: Coal is one of the cheapest, most abundant fuels on the planet. The clean-burning anthracite coal, for which the Hitzer E-Z Flo™ is designed, helps save the planet’s environment too. Anthracite coal is rich in clean-burning carbon but low in pollution-causing sulfur, dust and ash. “Nut” or “pea” sized coal is readily available in clean, easy-to-store 40 lb. bags.
