These high school students were nominated by administrators from their schools. It’s a privilege to give recognition to more than a dozen students in light of their many academic and civic achievements. Thanks to cooperation from officials at Bellmont, Bluffton, Jay County, South Adams, and Southern Wells, our readers will enjoy learning about special seniors from each of these school districts! Of course, we couldn’t publish a May edition without paying tribute to another special individual—mom! With the assistance of her grown children, including sons Ron and Mike Dull and daughter Rhonda Reynolds, we’re pleased to bring our readers this Mother’s Day article featuring Neva Pharr, a resident of southern Adams County. School Notes Statistics - May 2012

Interpreting statistics can be a tricky endeavor. The saying, “Numbers don’t lie, but statisticians do,” adds to the complexity. In March, the Indiana Commission of Higher Education (http://www.in.gov/che/2489. htm) released a report measuring how wellprepared high school graduates are for college. Statewide, 47% of the 2010 high school graduates attended a post-secondary institution; and of those graduates who attended college, 31% needed remediation in math and/or language arts. I was shocked to read that only 29% (25/86) of South Adams’ 2010 graduates attended college after high school. Of those who attended college, 36% (9/25) needed remediation classes. Still in shock, I asked myself, “Is it accurate that only 29% of South Adams graduates attend college?” Upon further investigation, I discovered that this report measures students who attend public post-secondary institutions within the boundaries of Indiana. It does not account for students who attend private Indiana colleges or out-of-state colleges. Consequently, this percentage is too low to represent the total number of students who go to college. Every year, the Indiana Department of Education compiles various statistics in a published document called the Annual Performance Report (http://www.doe.in.gov/ improvement/accountability/annual-schoolperformance-reports). Contrary to the previous report, this report states that 49%

of South Adams’ 2010 graduates pursued a college education after high school. Again, I question the accuracy of this statistic, especially when it is compared to its adjacent years. In both the 2009 and 2011 Annual Performance Report, over 70% of South Adams graduates attended college. It seems unusual that one year would be over 20 percentage points lower. All these facts and figures can be baffling and make it hard to come to a conclusion. Maybe that is why Albert Einstein said, “Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.” Regardless of what the statistics tell us about our past performance, education is about the future. South Adams’ mission statement is to “inspire students to reach for the stars.” It is our vision to empower students to set high personal academic standards and to lead ethical lives. Furthermore, we strive to provide students with valuable life experiences to promote the development of responsible and productive citizens. Some of our statistics show that South Adams is providing an excellent education, and some of our statistics show that we have room for improvement. Despite the numbers, South Adams will continue to strive to prepare students for college, careers, and citizenship—to put them in the orbit for reaching the stars.

eva Pharr’s lifetime has been marked by her sewing talent. Her daughter Rhonda recalls, “I remember my mom sewing, sewing, sewing! “When I was little, she made most of my clothes. She made a lot of her own pantsuits—which were always very stylish.”

Rhonda continues, “I remember her sewing curtains for Custom Floor and Wall. I can’t even imagine how many homes in Berne and the surrounding areas had—at that time, anyway—Neva Dull-sewn curtains.” As Neva faced what must have been a heartbreaking experience years ago—the

end of her first marriage—Rhonda says her mother found hope and healing in quilting. “She used the pain of divorce and turned it into something beautiful—her love of quilting,” Rhonda explains. The third of five children born to Sherman and Naomi Von Gunten, Neva grew up on a dairy farm. According to Rhonda, her mother had to leave the familiarity of Geneva High School, and the friends she’d made there, to attend Berne High School at the start of her senior year. “That couldn’t have been an easy move,” says Rhonda. “But, something like that teaches you to adapt to what life may throw at you.” Following her graduation from Berne High School, Neva married Tom Dull and later gave birth to four children. “Mom was a hard worker,” Ron remembers. “She tended to the house, raised four children, taught a Sunday school class, and ran her children to their many sporting events and practices.” Mike also recalls Neva’s presence at his school and sporting activities. He says one of the more important things he learned from his mother was to be “available to family and friends.” He adds, “When I was in the hospital for five weeks for burns, she came each day to be with me. “Since mom was at home, she had a huge influence on my childhood. Her example, working at home and giving us chores to do, helped instill in me a strong work ethic that has benefitted me throughout my life.” Ron says that no matter how early he awoke as a child, Neva was “already hard at work— sewing, cooking breakfast, and taking care

of other household chores.” Even though she was busy, Ron muses, “I can always remember being greeted with a smile and a hug—and a tussle of my hair. “I also remember spending many, many hours at home with mom when we were young. She was a true stay-at-home mom. Mom tackled the dubious challenges of raising the Dull kids single-handedly sometimes, since my father worked many hours at Home Dairy and was involved in coaching and playing semi-pro baseball.” Now a mother of four, herself, Rhonda marvels at the visible show of support her mother offered years ago. “My mom sat through a huge number of baseball games, between watching my dad and all three brothers play. I know, because I was with her at all those games. “I was a Pom Pom girl at South Adams, and she was at every performance. I only had to look to my left and see she was in her usual place while I performed. “It meant a lot to know she was there, to see the smiles and hear the applause. I can only imagine it was the same for my brothers to hear her cheering them on from the baseball stands.” Even more important, say Neva’s grown children, was the example she set for them as she went about daily life. Ron says, “My mother is a God-fearing and caring lady who taught us, early, that our Christian faith and upbringing were of utmost importance. “She was an excellent mom who fed us, clothed us, disciplined us when it was needed, and loved us with unconditional love. Mom allowed us freedom to spread our wings and to be adventurous out on the farm. As a result, she also had to be a

nurse, of sorts, and tended to many bumps, bruises, cuts, stitches, and broken bones over the years.” Rhonda testifies, “My mom shaped my childhood by instilling in us a work ethic— whether we wanted one or not. We also never missed a Sunday morning at church. Being in church was important.” Mike says, “The important things she taught me helped mold me into the man, husband, and dad I am today. The importance she put in marriage and family has been a great role model for me as I began my married life and started a family.” Regrettably, after several years of marriage, Neva became a single mother. “It isn’t what she wanted,” Rhonda points out, “but she made the best of it. “I remember her telling us that she never wanted what happened to her marriage to discourage us from being married and being committed in that marriage. I saw how much she was hurting, but I never, ever saw her faith falter. “She never lost sight that God was in control of her life. And, she continued to trust Him.”

Rhonda says Neva’s interest in quilting was piqued during this difficult time in her life. “Quilting has turned out to be a huge source of satisfaction and happiness for her—and, for all who have received one of her masterpieces.” In more recent decades, Neva has been employed away from her home. She was, for a time, partial owner of B & K Sporting Goods in Geneva. She later worked as a seamstress at Stan’s Menswear in Berne until the business closed. Today, Neva works part-time at Sprunger Shoes in Berne. She also helps care for her own mother, who is in her nineties. According to her son Ron, Neva is now a “very well-respected seamstress and quilter in the northeast corner of Indiana.” In fact, over the years, Neva has donated a number of quilts to the Mennonite Michiana Relief Sale, generating thousands of dollars for the charity. Rhonda adds, “Mom has had some of the highest-selling quilts there. They truly are works of art.” Neva continues to be a positive influence in the lives of her children. Citing her strong

Neva’s commitment to her children compels her to do what she can to show her support, in spite of her own views, including campaigning for her son, Ron Dull—a Democrat serving as Berne City Councilman. Neva is a Republican.

faith and “how she lives her life,” Mike articulates, “If my life has this same effect on my kids and grandkids, I will consider my life a success.” “We talk on the phone frequently as I drive to and from work in Fort Wayne,” Ron says. “She is always interested in what is going on in my life and in the lives of the rest of her family. She is a wealth of knowledge when tough situations come up, and I need some good words of wisdom or support.” For Rhonda, Neva’s influence is perhaps even more visible. Rhonda explains, “I have to laugh because I have to take a deep breath when things are getting stressful with my children—I remember hearing Mom stop and take that deep breath when I was a kid. “I didn’t understand, then, that it was her way of taking a second to regroup so she didn’t explode. I understand it now!” Neva’s influence extends outside her family, as well. One of her quilts now hangs in the Family Life Center at First Mennonite Church in Berne. Each quilt block represents a different woman from the Bible—the result of Neva’s personal Bible study and worship

time. Neva also assists in the MUMS childcare department. Reflecting on her mother’s life and influence, Rhonda mentions the importance of faith one last time. “Thinking about everything my mom has gone through in her life--her divorce, losing her dad and two brothers in a very short amount of time, having her husband, Derryle Pharr, diagnosed with cancer one year after they were married, and going through several major surgeries with him over the years… “I think about all these major life events or traumas my mom has gone through and how she handled them. It seems that, in those hard times, her faith was as strong as ever—and probably even strengthened. “I’m sure she had her moments of tears and fears, but at the end of the day, her faith never waivered. I am truly blessed to have such a strong woman in my life to teach me. “But, then again, my Mom had a strong woman in her life--her Mom, Naomi VonGunten--to teach her. “Quite a heritage...don’t you think?” WVL

Hannah Endorf plans to pursue a career in mechanical engineering at Purdue University. She says, “I hope to get a great job as a mechanical engineer and work on something that will change the world.” Hannah has been involved in a number of activities and committees at Bellmont, including National Honors Society, After-Prom Committee, and Future Engineers Club. She has participated in Dance and Competition Dance and has been in cheerleading, tumbling, tennis, and volleyball. Hannah is also active at Zion Lutheran Church, where she is a member of the youth group. She has helped at the Zion Lutheran Church’s Bible school, in addition to working at the Zion School Carnival and Grandparent’s Day Lunch. She has also coached the Zion Lutheran School’s cheer squad. Hannah has done volunteer work for Meals on Wheels, the Hope Chest, and at the 4-H Dining Hall. “I coached stunts and tumbling for BHS cheer camp,” she adds. When asked what her favorite part of her school experience

“I enjoyed getting to know my classmates a little better each year,” Jessica says, regarding her time in high school. “We all grew up a little more with each passing year, and it’s fun to watch all the changes.”

Jessica Bertsch is currently a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at Christian Care Retirement Community. Her experience there is what helped to inspire her to pursue a career in nursing, which she plans on doing at IPFW.

ACHIEVEMENTS:

Jessica credits the nurses she works with for this inspiration. “They help the residents live their lives to the fullest, and I want to do that as well.”

She adds, “I want to make the residents smile and bring a little sunshine to their day.”

After she graduates, Jessica hopes to remain at Christian Care for awhile, but her true goal is to work in an obstetrics unit. “I would love to help deliver new life into this world.” Throughout high school, Jessica has been involved in clubs and activities such as Book Review Club, Students Making a Difference Club, Spanish Club, and National Honors Society. Jessica’s parents inspired her throughout school. “My parents always pushed me to do my best, and that really helped push me along during my years in school.” Jessica has also been active in the community. She has been a teacher at vacation Bible school, joined work teams to New Mexico and Mexico, tutored in Algebra II, and participated in the youth group at the Apostolic Christian Church.

“I plan to attend the University of Indianapolis for occupational therapy,” says LeAnn Horn.

LeAnn has played basketball while in high school, and was captain of the varsity soccer team. She also served as president of the National Honor Society and has been a student leader in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. In addition, she was active in Campus Life, Key Club and JCL.

She attends The Rock in Portland. “I’ve gone to church my whole life.”

LeAnn works at The Cottage Grill & Creamery as a waitress and dishwasher, and is also employed as a farm assistant at Horn Farms.

LeAnn has done volunteer work for the Salvation Army and for the NHS and FCA, which included park clean-ups, visiting nursing homes, and doing fundraisers for homeless shelters.

Some of LeAnn’s hobbies include soccer, running, reading, and anything related to art. She also enjoys spending time with her friends and family.

When asked who inspires her most, she answers, “My occupational therapist, Larry. When I broke my pinkie and had to go to therapy, I saw how what he was doing was helping people, and that has always been a goal of mine.”

During school, LeAnn has enjoyed being with people. “The friends and teachers I met taught me things no book ever could, and I will miss all of them when I go to college.”

As for the future, LeAnn says, “I hope to be happy and successful, with a family that loves me. I hope my life turns out the way it’s meant to be and that everything I have worked for happens.”

OTHER TRIVIA: Adrianna enjoys running, rollerblading, and riding her bike. She also likes watching movies and spending time with her friends, in addition to reading, organizing, and doing origami. Adrianna is a waitress at The White Cottage and a lifeguard at Pine Lake, as well. 18

At Purdue University, Adrianna Teeter plans to major in General Health Sciences and minor in Spanish. After that, she is planning on medical school, which will allow her to pursue a career as an orthopedic surgeon. Throughout high school, Adrianna has been involved in cheerleading, track and field, cross-country, volleyball, and golf. She has also served as boy’s basketball manager. Adrianna is a member of the First Missionary Church youth group, where she has volunteered at vacation Bible school. She also participated in CDYC and Live to Serve. Adrianna has done volunteer work with the Haunted Forest, Upwards Cheerleading, the Red Cross blood drive, freshman orientation, the Holiday Bazaar, Christmas Walk, and Weihnachtsfest. Some of Adrianna’s favorite things about high school include SAAC, NHS, attending various games, homecoming, prom, Starfires Got Talent, her teachers, and sports, in general. When looking to her future, Adrianna hopes to achieve her goal of becoming a surgeon. She also has a desire to travel and be involved in missions work. Adrianna dreams of purchasing a house and having a family—including adopting children—with whom she hopes to maintain a close relationship.

Brandon Longenberger Academic Honors Diploma Brandon is very thankful for his family and for the positive influence they have had on him. “My family inspires me every day to be the best person I can be.”

After he graduates, Brandon Longenberger hopes to attend either Valparaiso University or Ball State Universtiy. Regardless, Brandon plans to study meteorology. “I eventually hope to work for the National Weather Service,” says Brandon, regarding his future. Throughout high school, Brandon has been in the National Honor Society, Spanish Club, Show Choir, Concert Choir, and the NHS tutoring program. “I have enjoyed being in choir and show choir for eight years,” says Brandon. Brandon also appreciates the friends he has made and enjoys hanging out with them. “I am a member of the First Reformed Church of Bluffton,” says Brandon. He is also active in his church’s youth group and occasionally helps lead worship. Brandon helps his church serve a dinner to the community every Thanksgiving. He has also volunteered for Karing for Kids, wrapping presents and going on a missions trip to California. Brandon is looking forward to what the future has in store for him, “My dreams for the future are that I will get married and be able to raise a family.” During his spare time, Brandon enjoys reading, cooking, and studying the weather.

OTHER TRIVIA: Katherine Norder was previously employed at a chiropractic office and currently works at Petland. In her spare time, Katherine enjoys camping, being outdoors, and skiing. After seeing the world, she hopes to settle down, get married, and start a family. 30

Katherine Norder plans on attending Purdue University, where she hopes to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in science and nursing. She may, later on, go back to get her Master’s to become an anesthetist or a nurse practitioner. During her time in school, Katherine has been involved in cross country and track. She has also been a participant in National Honor Society and SAAC. “I am actively involved in Concordia Lutheran Church.” Katherine helps teach Vacation Bible School and has been involved in numerous fundraisers at her church. Katherine’s dad has been her biggest influence. “My dad has been the person who has stood behind me and pushed me to always do better. “We’re very similar and enjoy a lot of the same things. With him going into the nursing field, as well, he inspires me to go for my goals and to never stop learning.” Katherine hopes to move to Colorado to work as a nurse after she graduates from college. But, she also has her sights set for something bigger—she wants to see the world, traveling to Europe and Asia. Katherine loves to travel. “Ever since my dad took my sister and me to France and Germany when I was in 7th grade, I have loved seeing the world.”

After high school, Philip Gerber intends to major in engineering at Purdue University. During high school, Philip has been involved in numerous extra-curricular activities, including the National Honor Society, Student Council, Academic Bowl, Marching Band, Jazz Band, Concert Band, wrestling, baseball, Business Professionals of America, Spanish Club, and Students Making a Difference Club. Philip is a member of the high school Sunday school class at the Apostolic Christian Church. Philip has done volunteer work for the Bluffton and Wells County Animal Shelter, Boys and Girls Club, Christian Care Retirement Center, Gateway Woods, Science Central, Bluffton Harrison Middle School and High School. He has also done various projects through Eagle Scouts and Dream Team, and he has been on multiple work teams to Mexico. “I have enjoyed being with my friends during my extracurricular activities and outside of school,” says Philip. “I also enjoyed developing as a person, getting to know myself and my friends better. My friendships will last forever.” Philip hopes to achieve his goal of being an engineer, but he also other plans, as well. “I also want to get married, have children, and, most importantly, serve the Lord with all of my heart.”

After she graduates, Tiffany Huelskamp plans to attend Ball State to study radiology, which will hopefully lead her to a career as a radiologic technician. She’s chosen this career because she enjoys helping people. Tiffany has been on varsity basketball, soccer, and track teams. She’s been involved in Campus Life, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Key Club, and JAYCOM, as a mentor. She was also treasurer of the National Honor Society. She is active at her church, as well, and is a teacher’s aide in fourth grade religion classes. “I attend church every Sunday morning with my family.” Tiffany has volunteered for the Salvation Army and Jay County High School Basketball Youth Clinic. She has participated in nursing home activities with Fellowship of Christian Athletes, fundraisers for a local homeless shelter with the National Honor Society, and park clean-ups with Key Club. Reflecting on high school experiences, Tiffany says, “I have had quality teachers and advisors guide and prepare me. I was able to participate in sports and join clubs that taught me responsibility, respect, and integrity. I appreciate all the opportunities, because I have learned life lessons and made memories that I will take with me the rest of my life.” Tiffany is very optimistic about her future and has endeavored to keep a hard-working mindset as she begins college.

She has also worked at the Red Cross blood drive and has done tutoring in math and Spanish. In addition to her job at McDonalds, she also gives swimming lessons. When asked who has inspired her most during her school days, Kristal answers, “All of my teachers and coaches have encouraged me to do my best in everything. I cannot thank them enough for their inspiration.”

After he graduates from high school, Bryce Longenberger plans to attend Ball State University where he will major in English Education. During his time in high school, Bryce has been involved in Show Choir, Concert Choir, Pep Band, Spanish Club, Concessions Club, and National Honor Society. Bryce is a member of the First Reform Church Youth Group. He is also a member of the church choir and the Sunday Youth Worship band.

Bryce works as a concessions manager at Southern Wells high school and as a babysitter.

Bryce has volunteered to be a tutor through the National Honor Society. He has attended a missions trip to California, wrapped gifts for Karing for Kids, served Thanksgiving meals at his church, and helped with the cleanup in Henryville.

In his spare time, Bryce enjoys cooking, baking, and reading.

Regarding his education, Bryce says, “During my high school experience, I have enjoyed the ability to challenge myself in every aspect of my academic life. I have also enjoyed being able to take leadership roles in different groups in the high school.” Bryce has set a very interesting goal for the future. “One dream I have is to someday write a novel. I’ve always loved reading and writing, and so I hope that in the future I can write a novel of my own.

After he graduates from high school, Kyle Blythe has his sights set on attending Indiana University in Bloomington, where he is planning to major in Biology. He hopes this will lead him to a career in the health care field. When it comes to school activities, Kyle is a representative on the student council, in addition to serving as president of Bellmont’s National Honor Society. Kyle has done volunteer work at a local Coats Because We Care drive, as well as at various Habitat for Humanity fundraisers. He has also volunteered at a local retirement home and has done work at fundraisers to help raise money for people with large medical bills. When asked who has inspired him, Kyle has an interesting response—“A better question would be, ‘Who hasn’t inspired me?’ “It goes from my siblings to Gandhi. Everyone is capable of inspiration and showing you examples of ways to improve.” Kyle isn’t entirely sure what the future holds for him, just yet. “I hope to have success in my endeavors at the college level. I also want to do some traveling and see some of the world. “Beyond that, it is all up in the air.”

After high school, Aaron Loy plans on going to college at the University of Indianapolis to pursue a degree in Physical Therapy. “I would like to become involved in some campus and community activities while attending the university.” Aaron played golf and soccer in high school. He was also involved in National Honor Society, Student Council, Student Leaders, Spanish Club, FFA, 4-H, the Jay Today staff, Campus Life, Youth for Christ, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. “I’ve enjoyed the different teachers and the learning experience they provided,” says Aaron. He also appreciates the variety of available activities and the opportunity to work with others. “These things have helped me grow as an individual and student.” As a volunteer, Aaron has been involved in the United Way Food Bank, The Salvation Army, FFA, Christmas for Needy Families, Youth for Christ Disaster Relief trip, Arts Place benefit auction, Cancer Society Auction and Walk, Jay County Junior Fair Board, and Jay County Harness Association. He has coached youth soccer for the Jay Community Center, as well. Following college, Aaron hopes to return and work in his local community. He believes his time in school has taught him valuable skills that he can later put to good use in the community.

Scott Hoeppner is currently employed at Swiss Village Retirement home, where he is a dietary worker. However, in the future, he hopes to attend Indiana University, where he plans to major in either business or finance. Scott has been involved in sports throughout high school. He has played basketball, baseball, and tennis. He has also been involved in the National Honors Society. He attends The Bridge Community Church, where he is involved in weekly Bible studies and youth group events. Scott’s volunteer experience includes National Honor Society charity events and tutoring junior high students. In addition, he has done yard work for people who are unable to do so for themselves. When asked who inspired him most during his school days, Scott says, “My parents have inspired me to be the best I can possibly be, control the things only I can control, and to not let anyone tell me I can’t do something.” Scott has high hopes for the future and an optimistic view of things to come. He also recognizes the things that really matter in life. “I hope to be happy, not by means of money, but by pure satisfaction of life—in family and friends and love.”

After she’s done with high school, Lindsey Marchal plans on attending Purdue University, where she will major in agricultural economics. Lindsey is involved in FFA and 4-H. She has also been active in Campus Life, Student Council, Prom Committee, JAYKOM, and National Honor Society. Lindsey has been involved in the Catholic Youth Organization. She has done readings in church during holiday masses and attends religion classes on Wednesdays. Lindsey has volunteered for the Jay County Fair Board for the past two years, “I have helped them set up for the fair, and made sure every fair attendee had a safe and enjoyable fair experience.” She has also helped out her neighbors with various projects and worked in the People’s Garden with her FFA chapter, helping to grow vegetables for people in need. “I could say a lot of people who have inspired me,” says Lindsey, “but the person who stands out the most is my father.” Lindsey especially appreciates her father’s support and his personality, “Sometimes I catch myself acting like him.” Lindsey would like to own her own business someday. After some time in the work force, she hopes to get married and raise a family.

Evan Johnston has been working at Swiss Village Retirement Home for three years now. His plans for the future, however, involve attending Indiana University—specifically, the Kelly School of Business. While he’s there, Evan plans to major in finance and minor in marketing. “I would like to work somewhere in finance or marketing, and have a kind, loving family,” he says of his hopes for the future. Evan has been involved in sports throughout his time in high school. He played football for four years, and he was also on the track team for two years. In addition to sports, he participated in the school musical for three years. For the past four years, Evan has been involved in Catholic Youth. Evan has volunteered to do landscaping work at Swiss Village, his place of employment, and has done some work repairing batting cages. He has given his time to help assist the elderly. Evan credits his friends as being the best experience from his time in high school, along with the valuable experience he’s gained that will help him along in the future. “I’ve made a lot of good friends, and I’m prepared for my future.”
