School Notes Bellmont High School— Digital 1:1 Initiative
Our Vision Bellmont High School students will graduate with the skills necessary to be expert consumers and creators of information and be among the states most sought after collegiate and workforce recruits.
Computers and 1:1 Beginning with the 2012-13 school year, Bellmont High School created a 1:1 learning environment for all students and faculty utilizing iPads. Meetings were held during the summer to begin the transition to a 1:1 environment. Administrators met with parents and students to outline the expectations and procedures for the roll-out and teachers attended Apple and MyBigCampus training. Students and faculty were provided with a core group of apps to use (Pages, Numbers, Keynote, iMovie, GarageBand, and PaperDesk). Students and faculty can personalize their iPads by adding additional apps, as needed. Bellmont High School has a wireless network available throughout the school. In addition, Bellmont has 3 networked computer labs: one 26 station computer lab with color printer, one 30 station computer lab, and one 15 station computer lab. As we strive to provide our students with a 21st-century learning and technology-rich environment, we recognize that it is important for our students to gain experience working in PC and MAC environments. Many of our classrooms are also outfitted with Smart Boards and all have access to Apple TV. In addition, we also have 10 MacBooks available for small projects and for teachers to use when creating digital curriculum.
In addition, the Bellmont High School Library Media Center is fully automated and equipped to access the NACS Union Catalog. Students and staff can access the library catalog via computer or iPad. The library now offers 80+ eBooks for curriculum-based projects and recreational reading, accessible via iPads or computers. Bellmont High School is currently using MyBigCampus to provide a safe online learning environment for communication and collaboration. Via MyBigCampus, teachers can post and collect assignments, assess student knowledge through quizzes, surveys, and tests, and can communicate important information and dates through announcements and calendars. Students can upload assignments, ask questions, take assessments, and communicate with classmates and their teachers. MyBigCampus provides a safe way for Bellmont High School to extend the traditional classroom to an online environment while giving students experience with social networking, collaboration, and online communication.
Connect / Create / Collaborate / Communicate These are the cornerstones of our digital 1:1 initiative at Bellmont High School. We believe that students need to be given the opportunity to be consumers and creators of information, traditionally and digitally, to be effective in postsecondary education and in the workplace.

SEARCHING FOR THE IDEAL DIET? Our Clients Love the Ideal Protein Weight Loss Method!
“I went on Ideal Protein in conjunction with joining the Ideal Protein team. I felt that in order to be a good coach, I must have experienced the same thing as our dieters. I started Ideal Protein at close to 190 pounds at the end of 2011. When I got married in July 2012, I had lost 34 pounds. “Ideal Protein guides you as to what to eat, how much and when to eat the meals/snacks. You simply cannot fail if you follow the plan without cheating. “A diet coach guides you, and once a week, you ‘check in.’ We weigh and measure once weekly and help you with any questions you might have. Ideal Protein also guides you through four phases, so when you’re done on our diet plan, you will know how and what to eat for the rest of your life to maintain the new, leaner you! “I love being an Ideal coach. I love seeing the faces of our dieters as they lose the weight. I see increased confidence, fewer complaints of body aches and happier, healthier people.” —Denise Knowles, Ideal Protein Coach & Ideal Protein Dieter
“I’ve been on many diet plans over the course of my life. I must say the Ideal Protein plan worked the best for me. I’ll admit the first two weeks were the toughest, but after I saw the pounds I was shedding, I was determined to keep up with it. I lost 20 pounds on my own but it took me a year to do it. Once I started the Ideal Protein plan, I dropped an additional 40 pounds in six months’ time. “I never spent any more on the Ideal foods than I would have spent at the grocery store. I never had more energy in my life. My overall health improved, too. Denise, who works there, was so supportive and helped keep me on track. I’d recommend Ideal Protein to everyone. If you need to lose 10 pounds or 100 pounds, they can help you. I’d be happy to talk to anyone considering the Ideal Protein plan. I’ve kept my weight off now for two years. Start today – you’ll be glad you did!” —Kate Dyer, Ideal Protein Dieter

“I started the program on April 18, 2012. I knew about the program because a few of my friends had been on it with great success, so I thought, Why not? I had wanted and needed to lose weight for years. “By my birthday in midMay, I had lost 20 pounds, and it was so very easy. By the end of summer, I was at 32 pounds and had met my goal! “I am still at my goal and feel great. This will work for anyone!” —Vanessa, Ideal Protein Dieter

Several factors have played a part in shaping Brook’s life. He had many teachers at Norwell that he learned a great deal from. He’s very thankful for his parents, who always find a way to motivate him. He also has great respect for our former President Abraham Lincoln, as he feels that Lincoln blended religion with politics perfectly. Faith has played an important role in Brook’s life, as well, as he has been very involved with his youth group at Markle Church of Christ. Brooks has gone on numerous mission trips to Mexico, performing construction tasks and working at the youth camps. He has donated much of his time to local charities, such as Master’s Pantry, Karing for Kids, and the youth soccer league in Markle. Brooks loves to keep up on current events around the world and after college hopes to work for the public in politics. He dreams of one day becoming a United States Senator. ~

BELLMONT HIGH SCHOOL congratulations, class of 2013! by Sylvia Marbach Cody Fuelling
■ ■ ■
Cody Fuelling, an outstanding and devoted 19-yearold student at Bellmont High School, has been honored for his academic achievements and high aspirations. “I have been fortunate to have the guidance of a loving family, dedicated school system, and a supportive community,” Cody says. He will be graduating 3rd in his class with an Academic Honors Diploma and a Technical Honors Diploma. He is a four-year Rotary Club Scholar, earning a spot in the top 1% of his class. Courtesy of Gibby’s Photo With advanced placement and dual-credit classes, Cody will be going into IPFW as a sophomore with a 4.0 GPA. He also has qualified for a Chancellor’s Distinguished Scholarship there.
“My ultimate goal is to become a high school principal. I want to study and improve upon the process of learning.” Cody is not only successful in the academic realm, but is also an active leader beyond. “I believe participating in club and school activities is important because they allow me to grow as a leader and individual.” He’s been in 4-H, SAAC, Student Council and National Honor Society, as well as president of Spanish Club. Cody has also devoted 150 hours of volunteer work in the past four years. “My hobbies make me who I am. But what I’m really interested in is helping people, and I like to extend my hand to those who need it.” Drawing motivation from leaders like Vasili Arkhipov and emulating the lives of positive people in his life, Cody gives his all in school and in service to the community. ~

Alysha Helmrich Alysha Helmrich has been interested in engineering since 4th grade. “My mom opened the door for me to see that engineering was a plausible career choice, so I have her to thank her for leading me down a similar path.” Alysha has been on the varsity tennis team and the honor roll and is 5th in her class. She was a DAR Good Citizen Nominee. She has been a member of Student Council, National Honors Society, and the Future Engineers Club. She has also participated in 4-H for 10 years. Alysha is a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church and helps clean the daycare and preschool facilities. Her hobbies include tennis, photography, and creating scrapbooks with her photos. Alysha volunteers at events held by Student Council, NHS, and her community. She has lent a helping hand with Project Lead the Way Camp at Bellmont Middle School, aiming to spark interest in engineering in younger students. “I’m usually up to give a helping hand whereever it is needed.” Alysha’s favorite part of attending BHS is “the amount of opportunities they have available for people pursuing engineering.” She thanks Josh Salway, who has “opened many doors for us” by founding the Future Engineers Club three years ago. She will attend Purdue to acquire a degree in chemical engineering degree before settling down near Lake Michigan. “I hope to make a difference with my chemical engineering job dealing with environmental issues. I hope to find alternative energy sources.” ~

ADAMS CENTRAL HS congratulations, class of 2013! by Amy M. Orr ■ ■ ■
Sarah Biberstine In her time at Adams Central High School, senior Sarah Biberstine has learned a great deal about the importance of serving others. And, she plans to take this knowledge on with her in the years to come. As a student, Sarah has been listed on the honor roll and the principal’s honor roll. She received the FFA’s Mental Award, is a two-time National Dairy Judging competitor. , and hasserved as FFA President. Sarah joined the Adams Central Marching Band in Indianapolis for the school’s first-ever performance at Lucas Oil Stadium. She has also participated in the Nathional Honor Society, Sunshine Society and swing choir.

Away from school, Sarah is involved with the youth group at Berne Evangelical Church and served on a missions trip to the Dominican Republic, where she learned that “rue love is unconditional and isn’t sensitive to skin color.” Sarah completed internships with Indiana Physical Therapy, Swiss Village’s therapy wing, and Choice Rehabilitation. FFA has been a big influence in Sarah’s life, and she says, “FFA doesn’t just teach you to be a successful leader. It also teaches you how to serve your fellow man. Our advisor, Mr. Jones, is a big supporter of being out in the community and loving those who are less fortunate.” Sarah says her parents have been her inspiration through school. “Both have worked so hard so that we have a great life. They’ve never skimped on enduring love.” Sarah plans to attend Purdue University where she will study pre-physical therapy in preparation fro graduate school. Her dream is to eventually open a hippotherapy clinic, incorporating physical therapy with the movement of horses. Sarah hopes to “help our brave veterans recover” from traumatic injuries. ~

Senior Kristin Broderick knows the difference one caring person can make in another person’s life. She credits Mrs. Harvey for making a difference in her life. “She was the one who helped my find myself and get my life on track. She helped me deal with stress that had gotten in my way. She believes in me and makes me feel like I can achieve anything.” And, Kristin has certainly shown her potential. Given the opportunity to retake some classes following her freshman year, she transitioned from a Core 40 Diploma to an Academic Honors Diploma. And, Kristin improved her GPA from 2.9 to 3.7, and she will graduate this spring 22nd in her class instead of 57th. As a student, Kristin has participated in marching band and color guard, as well as tennis and Business Professionals of America. She also competed on the state level in fundamental accounting and advanced accounting. Kristin has been a volunteer with Monroe Food Bank, Forgotten Children Worldwide, the Salvation Army, and Adams Central’s tutoring program. She has interned with Goodwin Funeral Home and holds employment with Kroger and Ouabache State Park. Kristin plans to study accounting at Ball State University. She hopes to own a funeral home someday so she can “help people through the hardest times in life -- burying someone they love.” ~

JAY CO. HIGH SCHOOL congratulations, class of 2013! by Ashley Olson Gabrielle Cross
■ ■ ■
While many students are involved in extracurricular activities, Gabrielle Cross has gone beyond simply being involved and strives to be a leader. For starters, the Jay County High School student is the Senior Class President and served as the varsity soccer team captain. Another example of Cross’ leadership can be seen in the America Red Cross Club at JCHS. She founded her school’s American Red Cross Club and heads the organization. In addition to this, she was the Student Section Leader at various school sporting events. Cross is also a proud Lady Patriot and has been a part of the girls basketball team for two years as well as on the girls varsity soccer team for three years.

The 18-year-old has gained plenty of experience in the workplace during her high school career. She’s been a waitress at Richards Restaurant in Portland and has done job shadowing at Dunn Family Dental Care, Jay County Hospital and Thomas M. Banta, D.D.S. Cosmetic and Dentistry. Cross earned further on-the-job experience from Roy Adams Physical Therapy, Perismmon Ridge and General Shanks Elementary School. As you can see, Gabrielle Cross is an active, well-rounded high school senior. She’s participated in various sports and spends much of her free time volunteering and working at various businesses in the Portland area. With her high school career coming to an end, Gabi is busy preparing for her future and is still deciding where she’ll attend college. ~

The 18-year-old wants to attend IPFW in Fort Wayne and study fashion merchandising. “I hope I’m happy, whether I am in the fashion industry, or whatever else I may do,” says Valentine. The senior should have little trouble transitioning to college, since she is a threeyear National Honor Society member and received academic honors in her sophomore, junior and senior years.

Valentine is also an enthusiastic runner who’s active in school sports. She’s been on the cross country, swimming and tennis teams, as well as the Track Academic Team. Valentine’s other extracurricular activities include 4-H, band, winter drumline and summer marching band.

She’s leaving high school with a good perspective and positive outlook on her four years at JCHS. “I have enjoyed all the opportunities that school has brought me. I was able to go to Germany through school. I feel like I could discover a little bit more about myself through the faculty and student body. They helped shape who I am today.” Another person who helped shape Valentine is her sister. “My sister has really inspired me. She is a determined and hard-working individual. She has inspired me to take her work ethics and apply it to my everyday life.” ~

Ravi Patel Ravi Patel is a soft-spoken senior who’ll soon be graduating. While at JCHS, he’s built quite a resume, which includes being a Lilly Scholarship recipient, IU Prestige Scholarship recipient, soccer team co-captain, and Academic Team Captain. Patel has also earned an Academic Honors Diploma, along with an acceptance letter from Indiana University. Patel’s high school activities have included the Academic Team, baseball, soccer, National Honor Society, Student Council and Campus Life. Outside of JCHS, he’s volunteered for the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, Salvation Army bell-ringing, St. Jude’s Hospital fundraiser, Delt’s Craft Show, and the Tractor and Engine Show. Patel’s job at Ritz Theater in Portland also keeps him quite busy. Upon graduating, Patel has big plans for the future. “(I want) to become a doctor and have a positive impact on every patient’s life,” he says. “I also want to be remembered for being a hard-working, caring person that anybody can trust. “My brother has been my biggest motivator; he is autistic, so I know it’ll be my responsibility to take care of him in the future. This is why I work as hard as I do.” Looking back upon his career at JCHS, Patel expresses gratitude for the time spent there. “It’s given me the opportunity to connect with many people who have influenced my life greatly. It’s also helped me realize what I want to do with my future.” WVL

VAN WERT HIGH SCHOOL
congratulations, class of 2013! by Ashley Olson Alex Bair
■ ■ ■
In a world full of rising gas prices and environmentallydamaging fuels, Van Wert High School senior Alex Bair is looking to help find a solution to these problems. He says, “I hope to find a more efficient way to convert fossil fuels and renewable resources into usable energy, thus reducing our environmental impact and dependency on foreign oil.” Bair is certainly on the right track towards reaching this goal. Through Van Wert’s Project Lead the Way program, he has been able to study engineering concepts with a group of other students. He was also involved in the FIRST Robotics Club – FIRST Tech Challenge for two years as a Jr. Lead Programmer, Team Leader and Lead Programmer.
This senior has been involved in Beta Club, Globally Active People Club, National Honor Society (President senior year), German Club and Cougar Mentors. Bair is also musically gifted as a member of the marching, pep and concert band; he even served as the marching band section leader during his senior year. The 18-year-old also performed at the VW County Young Artists Recital in 2010 and 2011. Despite his involvement, he’s still managed to maintain a 4.0 GPA during all four years and was a National Merit Finalist, Scholar Athlete, a three-year Academic Letter Award Winner, and finished first (senior) and second (junior) in the Math Contest at State of Ohio Beta Convention. Bair also played varsity soccer and varsity tennis. ~

Nik Wolford Nik Wolford has kept himself busy, playing a variety of sports, joining multiple clubs, and working at his grandfather’s barn since 2008. Not surprisingly, his hard work also shows in the classroom. Wolford has been on the 4.0 Honor Roll all four years of high school and was a four-time Academic Letter Award recipient. As for the future, Wolford is planning to go into the army upon graduating this year. He says, “I will be attending the USMA in West Point, New York, so I plan on serving in the military for at least 5 years following graduation at the academy, and then starting a family. “I also plan on getting a job in some field of engineering…possibly civil.” With the Congressional Nomination for the United States Military Academy at both West Point and Annapolis, he is well on his way to fulfilling his goals. Highlights of Wolford’s high school career include the relationships he’s created with others, in addition to playing team sports. “I have enjoyed competing in various sports, such as football, basketball, and track, as well as building relationships that could last a lifetime.” The encouragement from the staff at Van Wert has been helpful in guiding Wolford. “I have been inspired by a teacher of mine, who goes through a great amount of adversity. He has taught me to never make excuses when experiencing a tough situation and to always live life in the pursuit of happiness.” WVL

Customers must own the unit(s) being recycled. Limit two units per residential address. A check will be mailed to participants within 4-6 weeks after the appliance collection. Some restrictions apply.

FT. RECOVERY HIGH SCHOOL
congratulations, class of 2013! by Ashley Olson Tana Hart
■ ■ ■
Tana Hart is parting ways with her high school and moving on to Bowling Green State University. She’s a devoted student, who is involved in the music program at Fort Recovery High School and focused entirely on her school work and activities. During high school, Hart has participated in cheerleading, Art Club, German Club, National Honor Society, Marching band, Choir, and Solo and Ensemble. She has also earned awards in several of her classes, including German I, II and III, Health I, Psychology and Chemistry.

Outside of the classroom, Hart has played piano for nursing home residents, participated in multiple fundraisers for band and choir, and helped with cheer clinics at the elementary and middle school. The 18-year-old has had two strong influences at school. She draws inspiration from her band director and chemistry teacher, who are both hard-working and motivated individuals. “I have enjoyed meeting new people throughout the years, participating in multiple activities and organizations, and going to Florida with the band and New York City with the choir.” Upon graduation, Hart is looking forward to finding work in the business design industry. ~

Jannelle Schwieterman With her high school career coming to an end, and her observation time at the Coldwater Community Hospital finished, Jannelle Schwieterman is planning to attend Rhodes State College in Lima. “I want to earn a degree as a physical therapy assistant. After that, I want to obtain a job at a local hospital and help those in need.” She adds, “My dream in life is to tell everyone I associate with about my struggles and battles in life, and show them that nothing stopped me -- not even the traumatic brain injury I acquired.” Schwieterman was involved in a lifethreatening car accident in April 2012. Despite this harrowing incident, she has recovered and remained an outstanding student. Her accolades include serving as Sports Medicine Club President, achieving ‘A’ Honor Roll for her freshman, sophomore and junior years, playing softball and basketball, and particiapting in National Honor Society and Future Teachers of America. Schwieterman has also been involved with her church since first grade, wrapped presents for needy families, caroled at a nursing home and served as a high school teacher aide. It’s no surprise that Jannelle Schwieterman has enjoyed her time at FRHS. “I have enjoyed being part of a small school where people care about others, no matter what.”

Schwieterman credits her parents for her success. “My parents have inspired me because they care for me in times of need. When I need help, they give me their undivided attention. They’ve taught me many things, especially how to live life and care for others. Without my parents, I wouldn’t be who I am today.” ~

Alex Thien Alex Thien is a standout senior, and his interests range from creative writing to business. But Thien isn’t just focused on academics. For starters, he served as the school’s Junior Class Secretary and Senior Class Treasurer and was on the National Honor Society for two years. Thien is also a four-year member of the varsity baseball team, as well as a four-year statistician for the boys and girls varsity basketball teams. Additionally, the 18-yearold served on Student Council and in the Sports Medicine Club.
SINCE 1919
What really stands out about Thien is that he was named the top student in several classes, including American History, English 10, Government & Economics, Accounting I, Computer Apps and Advanced English II. One thing that has driven Alex to be such a success is his brother, Frankie. “My brother has been my biggest inspiration. His optimistic and driven work ethic and personality have had a long-lasting effect on my academic endeavors.” Thien also credits teaching staff. “I’ve enjoyed the instruction from the Fort Recovery teaching staff. They’ve motivated me throughout the course of my high school career and continue to guide me in my studies.” When Thien finishes high school, he hopes to attend either Bluffton University or Ball State University, majoring in business and minoring in creative writing. “I look forward to getting an education and attaining a suitable job for my future career.” WVL
